Arrest made in six-year Polk County Cold Case

Late January, Polk County Sheriff’s Department set a goal of revisiting an unsolved case that affected Polk County and the Round Lake Community Jan. 11, 2014; the hit-andrun, double fatality that took the lives of Ben Juarez and Rick Cobenais.

Ten months later, that revisit has paid off. Andrew Endres, 32, Randolph, MN. has

been charged with two counts of hit and run involving death.

Six years ago, witnesses said Cobenais, concerned over Juarez’s ability to drive, took his car keys. An altercation ensued that spilled into Endres the traffic SEE COLD CASE, PAGE 2

AACF, making a difference in their community

In 2012 former Amery Area Community Foundation (AACF) Chair, Sue Johnson, said, “We’re doing more than just giving scholarships to local high school seniors,” said Foundation Chair Sue Johnson.

“Our community foundation is impacting lives, solving problems, and improving the future of the Amery area.”

AACF still agree with Johnson’s sentiments. Her son-in-law, Ed Flanum, has taken the reigns as AACF Chair and along with the rest of the board, they are working diligently to leave a positive mark on the Amery community.

The City of Amery, local organizations and concerned citizens founded the AACF in 1984 as a community trust. Its purpose was to give individuals and families the opportunity to make lasting gifts to meet the needs of residents.

Evidence at the scene and witness statements indicated that after striking the pair, the truck stopped. The driver and a front passenger exited the vehicle and began to approach the scene before abruptly running back to the vehicle and fleeing to the south.

Jan. 31, 2020, in a news conference, Cobenais’ son, Thomas Fowler spoke. When speaking of the individuals who fled the scene six years ago he said, “I don’t hold grudges against them. As an Anishinaabe we are taught that forgiveness gives us peace, but I do not have anyone to forgive. My peace has been disrupted for five years.”

He described how since the incident he has had anxiety over people walking and jogging on the local county roads. “There are two individuals out there who feel it is ok to run someone over and keep going. I need peace so I can move on with the rest of my life. I am ready to forgive these two individuals. Be a man. Do the right thing. I cannot keep reliving this,” he said.

It was not one of the individuals that ended up coming forward, but someone else who had learned of the incident.

According to the criminal complaint, the Polk County Sheriff’s Department received a call Sept.

28 from an individual identified as MJL, who said his estranged wife, identified as KKL, was intoxicated one evening and told him her friend, Endres, was the individual who had struck and killed the Native Americans.

MJL said his soon-to-be ex-wife, KKL, is a longtime friend of Endres.

MJL said approximately six months ago, KKL and he had argued about the amount of time she had been spending with Endres. MJL said during the conversation, KKL told him Endres was having a hard time after seeing a recent story on KARE 11 about the hit-and-run accident and that was why she had been spending so much time with him, adding she was helping him through it.

KKL allegedly told MJL on the night of the incident, Endres was having a party at his parent’s cabin and they had run out of beer and were going to town when the incident happened. MJL said KKL told him Endres was drunk when it occurred. KKL said Endres fixed the truck damage and paid cash, but did not know where.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for a phone number associated with Endres and were able to find phone activity leading up to and shortly after the incident communicating with a cellphone tower near the intersection of County Road E/ County Road G, in Luck, WI. Investigators were also able to locate a 1997 Ford F150 truck, once owned by Endres, which had since been sold to other various parties.

Investigators first interviewed Endres at his place of employment in Hampton, MN. Oct. 14. Initially Endres said he did not know where Polk County, WI. was, but did confirm his parents have a cabin in that area. At that time he also confirmed

donors that gifts made today will be professionally managed. The funds will be used wisely and effectively to enhance the community’s future well-being. The partnership sees SCVF board and staff manage the funds and complete all accounting and government required paperwork.

Board member Leslie Hessler said there was a time when she had no clue what the AACF even was and that her banker had introduced it to her. “It is a way to use your assets to promote the charitable things you love in your community,” she said.

Flanum said AACF is able to grant approximately 4 ½ percent of their endowed fund; the average of the last 16 quarters, so about $36,000 a year that they are able to grant. The usually do it in two cycles.

The 2020 AACF Mission statement concisely states what the group is all about. “We build permanent endowments and provide philanthropic leadership, enabling donors to make lasting investments in the Amery area.”

The AACF has given funds to the Amery Food Pantry, the Amery Public Library, Northwoods Homeless Shelters, Interfaith Caregivers, Kinship, Polk County Mental Health Taskforce, Amery Centennial Hall, Arnell, Amery Historical Society, the Danielson Band Shell and much more. Board member Dr. Lisa Turek-Shay said, “Name a project around Amery and we have probably been involved. We have been behind the scenes on an awful lot that has happened in the community.”

his phone number and that he once owned a Ford F150 black truck, he said the vehicle had never been in an accident that he knew of.

Allegedly he then told investigators he knew what they were getting at. Endres said his friend was going through a divorce and said, “I hate to tell you, I think you’re going on a wild goose chase.” He said his friend was going through a nasty divorce and her soon-to-be ex-husband knew he had a black truck and his parents had a place “up there.” Investigators believed he was speaking of KKL and MJL. Endres’ father was interviewed.

He confirmed they have a cabin in Luck and he said his son rarely goes to the property. When asked if his son had told him that he had been interviewed by investigators earlier that day, he said his son said officers from Polk County had come to speak with him about a boat. The father said up until this time, he had never heard about the hit-and-run accident.

Also Oct. 14, investigators met with an individual identified in the complaint as WITNESS1, whose phone number was used by the phone belonging to Endres in the area on the date of the accident.

WITNESS1 said on the day of the accident he and his then-girlfriend went to the Endres cabin in Luck, with the intention of meeting friends and staying at the cabin overnight.

He said also there was Endres, KKL and two other females. He said everyone was drinking and playing cards and were talking about a sign they had seen on the drive up and decided they were going to go leave and take the sign. He said when they left the cabin, Endres was driving his Ford F150 truck and he was the front seat passenger.

He said 5-10 minutes after leaving, they came across a car with headlights at the end of a driveway and two figures in the middle of the roadway fighting in their lane of travel.

He recalled Endres slamming on the brakes before the vehicle stopped. WITNESS1 said he exited the passenger side door, but remained near the door. He said Endres exited the truck and began to run back to where the victims were struck. He said Endres then ran back to the truck and told WITNESS1 to get back in. They then drove away. WITNESS1 admitted they knew they struck the individuals.

He said Endres parked the truck in the garage and attempted to clean it with bleach. They returned to Minnesota the following day.

WITNESS1 said Endres had called

and warned him that law enforcement had questioned him and that they may be coming to talk to him as well. He said Endres called him from his local fire department, knowing law enforcement would most likely be monitoring his phone activity.

WITNESS1 concluded the interview saying he and Endres had not talked about the incident for several years as it brought about bad memories/feelings. Allegedly he said they left the scene because both were scared and didn’t know what to do. He said they had been drinking, but did not feel they were intoxicated. To his knowledge, KKL was the only person Endres told about the incident and WITNESS1 had never told anyone before that day.

According to Polk County Sheriff, Brent Waak, Endres was taken into custody Oct. 21, 2020.

In an Oct. 22 news conference, Waak thanked the victims’ families for believing in the process that had brought them to this day. He also thanked the media in attendance.

“Your news coverage 10 months ago is a big part of why we are here today,” Waak said.

Tribal police chief Frank Taylor said, “Oct. 21 was a good day. I received a call from the Sheriff who wanted to share information with me that I had been waiting on for a very long time. The day got better as the families of Ben and Richard arrived to meet with the investigators and staff who had put so much effort into this case and to see the reaction of family members will stick with me the rest of my life.”

Taylor said it is his belief the strength and courage of the family who put their emotions on camera 10 months ago that had a huge influence on this case.

Polk County district attorney Jeff Kemp said his role in this has just begun. The next steps are extraditing Endres to Polk County from Minnesota for an initial appearance, where bond will be set, followed by a preliminary hearing to determine Probable Cause. If convicted, Endres could spend 50 years in prison.

Cobenais’ son Fowler spoke once again, like he did 10 months ago. He said, “Emotions are running high right now.”

He thanked law enforcement for everything they have done.

Fowler said it wasn’t only the victims’ families that have been impacted, but the families of the men responsible for the incident too.

Fowler said, “I am going to ask that everyone be respectful of all families in this case. The last thing we need is hate, anger and negativity.”

OCTOBER 31 - NOVEMBER 1 “I Promise” Story Trot Our group has been meeting for the last month to figure out a way to be better in our community. Issues of racism have been brought up amongst our group and we want to help each other by educating others to be kind to each other. We want to unite Amery to be stronger and more supportive of our BIPOC friends and family. We have planned a story trot with the story “I Prom-

ise” by LeBron James as our focus.

The group of kids is putting together a walk with the support of our parents, Amery United, Amery Public Library and Friends of Stower Seven Lake State Trail.

These groups help us as we called, emailed, texted and met over zoom to put this event on for our community. The trot will be held at StowerTrail in Amery, WI. There will be pre sales of t-shirts and masks for our be kind event to help educate our community about racism. We will be accepting donations to help fund this trot along with any extra donations will be going back into the community to help educate people about racism. Our shirts that our group, Ben Yanok, and Sports and more, are going to make say “be kind” in sign language and Amery United. We will have more information about getting masks and T-shirt’s next week. The trot will be held October 31st-November 1st and we will have volunteers present to collect donations. The volunteers will also help with education and to answer questions throughout the weekend. Please remember to follow COVID-19 guidelines

WWII: Torgerson was an AHS basketball player before his WWII days CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

The American Legion Post was organized and chartered in Amery during July 1919, named after Larson, who was killed September 1918 in France. He was the son of Mrs. Nels Larson and served as a private with Company C. 358 Infantry.

In 1947, the post’s name was changed to Larson-Torgerson. This honored Stanley Torgerson, who was the first area man to lose his life in WWII. He was killed on Sept. 14, 1943. Torgerson was 1st Lieutenant, Field Artillery.

Torgerson was born in Deronda Nov. 24, 1914 and moved to Amery in 1920. He graduated from Amery High School in 1933 and River Falls State Normal in 1939 after which he was an instructor at Hammond schools for two years.

He enlisted the service in July 1941 and left for overseas duty in May 1943, seeing action in Sicely and Italy.

October 30, 1943, Torgerson’s family received the Purple Heart awarded to him posthumously for military merit and for wounds received in action resulting in his death in Italy.

Torgerson was one of nine local men honored in a memorial service Feb. 11, 1945. Others recognized that day were: Marvin Carlson, Manville Martinson, Rupert Isaacson, Robert Lynch, Kenneth Butler, Alvin Preble, Burton Jones and Dale Johnson.

Like the bug in the rug

appy Halloween to you and farewell to Daylight Saving Time this weekend.

Saturday is a big night — Halloween, a full moon and the end of Daylight Saving Time. I saw a meme earlier this month that we had a full moon in early March, the start of coronavirus and Daylight Saving Time and now we are having a full moon at the end of October at the end of Daylight Saving Time. The meme sugPublisher gested that perhaps this meant we could “reset to normal Tom Stangl conditions.”

Last week’s weather extremes got me thinking about my childhood. My wife and I had been diligently chipping away at the leaves in our yard, mulching them up as they came down. The leaves were wonderful this year, weren’t they?

As I was pushing the mower, I was enjoying the color of the leaves and recalling the times as a child when I was asked to help rake the leaves.

Like many children before me and many after me, I was interested in raking leaves into a pile and then jumping in and running through the pile. My father, Arved (aka “The Chief”), who treasured his limited free time (he worked five and a half days a week), had little patience for such frivolity. Leaves were another job to be tackled as efficiently and as quickly as possible.

I was asked to work, not play.

As I learned raking leaves needed to be work and not fun, I lost my “passion” for the job and wandered off to do something else.

Last week before the snowfall as I mulched leaves, I felt the same way. I really enjoyed looking at the colors, cleaning them up, not so much.

When the snow arrived last Tuesday, I fired up the snow blower to clear the sidewalk. It was the first time I had run it since the spring and it started on the second try, a win in my book. It was still snowing as I blew (squeezed?) the heavy, wet snow off the sidewalk. It was a strange sight to see bright leaves come out of my snow blower.

2020 has been a strange year. Why would I expect things to be normal in October?

As a child, I spent lots of time outside playing in the snow. Did I ever take the time to scoop the sidewalk? Nope. The Chief had to do the shoveling after standing on concrete for nine hours working on cars and trucks.

Playing in the snow is fun, keeping the sidewalks safe and clear is work. Work, no matter what age you are, is rarely fun.

I decided that leaves and snow are much more fun when you are a child.

I did experience one feeling that is common to children and adults after a snow storm — the feeling of being snug and cozy at home while it snows outside.

There’s something very special about the warm feeling of security one has being safe and sound. It’s a universal feeling I think and I know the lure of being home and safe is a siren’s call to me, especially when I am outside moving snow.

Here’s hoping the weather gets back to whatever passes for “normal” these days.

Snow much for being different

I

hear people frequently say they feel like they are turning into their mother of father. That has never been the case for me. In a first last week, I finally heard my parent’s voices leaving my lips.

When it comes to my late mother, I never looked like her. Besides music, I never had the same interests as her. Crocheting, baking and gardening were never hobbies that clicked with me.

My dad is not my birth father, so it was always the question of nature vs. nurture leaving its mark Editor on me. I never took April Ziemer to playing hockey; hunting/trapping or cutting wood (or any physical labor for that matter) so it didn’t really seem the whole nurture thing left much of a stamp.

Last Tuesday as the snowflakes danced down from the sky, I swear they seeped into my pores and filled me with the worry and words of my parents.

I turned 16 on Tuesday, December 15, 1992. Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” dominated the airwaves. Bill Clinton had recently been elected president and America’s largest shopping mall spanning 78 acres was being constructed in Minnesota. After ruling the latenight television for more than 20 years, Johnny Carson hosted his final show on The Tonight Show. The first text-based Web Browser was

released to the public marking the beginning of the now famous World Wide Web Era. Even bigger than all of that, I was about to gain my freedom with my driver’s license.

I remember my mom suggesting maybe I should wait until the spring.

She didn’t think driving on the snow covered roads were the best time to tackle being a newly licensed driver.

I couldn’t help what time of year I had been born and I was not about to wait for robins to appear to climb behind the wheel. I made my appointment at the Amery DMV and after one attempt, the late great Robert Pabst signed off for me to become a licensed driver.

It seemed like that winter and for many that followed, my parents were always nagging me. Was I really going to climb into the Chevy Beretta and hit the road wearing my jeans rolled up, canvas sneakers without socks and no coat? I absolutely was.

They said I would be sorry if I went into the ditch. They were right, but I never told them (about going in the ditch and about being right). I just could not understand why they cared so much.

Fast forward 28 years and I finally get it. Our oldest child, Rylee, received her license early last March.

Most of the bad weather was finished for the year and soon enough the world came to a halt due to COVID-19, so she wasn’t driving much anyways.

Last Tuesday morning as Ken Barlow stood in front of the KSTP weather map and shared what was to come, I started to panic. I started thinking maybe Rylee shouldn’t drive to school that day. My husband said the weather people were always

wrong and we would probably only get a few flurries.

I eyed Rylee’s attire up and down.

I asked if she had extra gloves in the car and if she had put the snow scrapper in her vehicle yet.

As she left, I told her to call us that afternoon if it did indeed snow. We could come pick her up and leave her car at the school. My husband once again said I was over-reacting, reminding me that Rylee’s car had just gotten new tires and she had the safest ride in the household.

As we all know, it did snow more than a few flurries that day. Rylee drove home herself and did just fine.

For the record, it was my husband who was panicking that afternoon when she hit the road. When we both called to check and make sure she had made it safe and sound, she thought we were ridiculous for being so worried.

Someday she will understand.

Just as I was preaching the words of Steve and Sharon to her, 28 years from now she may be preaching the words of Josh and April.

You spend years wishing your parents would get off your back, only to realize they are the only ones who ever really had your back. No matter how far we have come, our parents are always in us, sometimes tucked way deep inside just waiting for a little life lesson or in this case, some snow to come crawling out.

Newspapers get my vote DEAN RIDINGS CEO, AMERICA’S NEWSPAPERS

Editor’s Note: America’s Newspapers and its members have a vested interest in helping the general public understand the essential role of a free press.

Members are encouraged to publish this opinion piece and the accompanying editorial cartoon — or write their own editorial — to educate the public about this important issue.

There is more content available today about Dean the upcoming Ridings election than likely in any previous cycle. While we could fill this page with media sources that have some type of information about the election, most people find their election information on social media (like Facebook and YouTube), cable news networks, major broadcast television networks, talk radio, major public broadcast networks, local television, national newspapers, local newspapers or news websites. While we have a proliferation of media options, we also have more disinformation than ever, and we know that both the Russian and Chinese governments have even had a part in using social media to generate election-oriented content.

Unfortunately, the bad news doesn’t end with content meddling. While there is more content than ever, Americans are increasingly polarized about which media sources they trust and those they don’t. While it is obvious that Democrats lean toward MSNBC and Republicans lean toward Fox News for their cable news coverage, the polarization is made worse by thinking that analysis or commentary is the same as objective news. If you want to truly be informed, it is vitally important to recognize the difference between news and commentary. While those on the left may enjoy Rachel Maddow’s show on MSNBC, it would be more appropriate to consider it as commentary, and not really a news source. And while Rush Limbaugh’s ratings may be high among Republicans, his show is also more focused on commentary, and less about objective news reporting. Maddow and Limbaugh both have a large following, and many in their audience accept the analysis as news, which it isn’t.

To make matters even more challenging, those who rely primarily on social media are clearly just less informed.

According to the Pew Research Center, respondents to a survey conducted between October 2019 and June 2020 were asked 29 different fact-based questions, from economics to Donald Trump’s impeachment to the COVID-19

outbreak and more. The average proportion who got each question right is lower among Americans who rely most on social media for political news, than for those who rely most on other types of news sources, except for local TV. Social media is certainly full of content, but using it as a primary source will leave the consumer less informed, or even misinformed.

So where do local newspapers fit in? Most local newspapers provide detailed election coverage, and almost always more than the other local media sources. If you are looking for information on state and local races, newspapers are almost always the only media source that covers the majority of the races. Many newspapers provide a deep look at the issues, and questions and answers with candidates are commonplace. If you look back at newspapers’ historic coverage of elections, you will likely see that they are usually very careful to provide equal space for each candidate and to even be consistent in where they place the stories, refraining from placing one candidate’s bio on page one and another’s on page six. Separating them just isn’t done.

Some newspapers will also “endorse” a candidate or issue.

While you may not agree with the newspaper’s position, they most likely published the endorsement on the opinion page, clearly separating it from news pages or sections. Newspapers keep the objective news articles separate from opinion, and work hard to provide clear labels so their readers understand the difference. Endorsements can help readers make up their minds, even if it means voting the opposite from the newspaper if the reader finds they don’t agree with the newspaper’s position. Newspapers want to provide their readers with the information needed to cast an informed vote. How many stories have you seen about voting information in the past few weeks?

As we approach what many believe to be one of the most important elections of recent years, seek out accurate information from a source you can trust. For me, the newspaper still gets my vote.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Social Security and Medicare Cuts Social Security (SS) and Medicare said to be the most popular government programs.

Yet it is under threat. A majority of Republicans have been opposing cuts to SS and Medicare since passage. President Trump recently announced if reelected he will explore cutting SS, Medicare, and Medicaid. Multiple outlets have reported his 4 years of comments and efforts on entitlement cutting efforts.

July 2020, Trump said he wouldn’t sign a COVID relief bill if it didn’t include SS cuts.

Trump’s 2020 budget (senate.gov.) had cuts of $845 Billion Medicare, $25 Billion Social Security and $1.5 Trillion Medicaid over 10 years paying for 2017 tax cuts.

A couple other Republican efforts: 1964 speech by Ronald Reagan explaining his opposition to SS and Medicare as a reason he became Republican. In the 1970’s, conservative Cato Institute made privatizing SS its primary goal. President GW Bush tried to replace SS by partially privatize it. VP Mike Pence, then Congressman, proposed deeper cuts than President Bush. Effort failed as Democrats didn’t support these cuts. Republican Senator McConnell, called for cuts in 2016. In 2017, McConnell said cuts to SS, Medicare and Medicaid were high on Republican agenda.

In 1965 Medicare and Medicaid became law.

1935, FDR signed Social Security Act, a federal safety net for elderly, unemployed, and disadvantaged Americans. SS supplements retirement income. Workers pay into the system. Neither immigrants nor anyone else is able to collect SS benefits without someone paying SS payroll taxes. Estimated 50% to 75% of illegal immigrants pay from $4 to $13billion yearly into SS and about $3 billion into Medicare, and will never see benefits.

There are myths circulating on SS. For facts go to SSA.gov. SS provides higher annual payout than private retirement annuities per dollar contributed because its risk pool is not limited to those who expect to live a long time, and as a government run program, administrative costs are much lower. Nearly 6 million children, 18 and younger, receive SS in 2019 for various reasons, including being dependents of retired, disabled or deceased workers. About 40% of Americans aged 65 or older, 15 million, were lifted out of poverty in 2019. About 50% of seniors, SS provides at least 50%, and about 25% of seniors, SS provides 90% of their income. Write, email, or call your House Representative and your 2 Senators. Tell them not to cut SS, Medicare, and Medicaid. House.gov, Senate.gov.

I had to write to say how happy I am the Countryside Cooperative Amery Auto and Tire Center was voted the Best. They deserve it. We need more places that are honest like that.

I’ve had a time with my pickup and car.

I was told things were wrong with it. I got a second opinion, and it wasn’t correct. I did confront the owner. After the pickup, he asked for a second chance, so I did with the car, but no change. If this happened to me, HOW MANY other people are being scammed by this place?

The Issue We Can’t Agree to Disagree On Some weeks back in this newspaper, I read a column titled “We just disagree.” It expressed a very understandable exhaustion with today’s seemingly nonstop debates, often political, that always seem to end more in nasty argument or resentment than insightful learning or understanding. I empathize with the writer and appreciate that the column avoided taking a side politically. Over

the past years, friends and family across the country have cited this same fatigue to me as they watch our communities of all kinds fracture and isolate, including Amery.

Amery is where I grew up, and I continue to be enormously grateful to this community rich in good, interesting, and kind people.

The values I learned here traveled with me to my studies at UW-Madison and my years living abroad. Over the years, I have been fortunate to be welcomed into vastly different social groups and hear unguarded, authentic thoughts from across the political spectrum.

I can confirm that this fatigue stretches both ways “across the (political) aisle.”

This all brings me back to the column I read here weeks ago. The social isolation, lost jobs, and shuttered businesses of the last year make us especially envious of “simpler times” when communities felt more supportive and nonjudgmental. On top of that, I acknowledge that much of today’s debates, both nationally and locally, veer into the nastiness of mockery, distrust, and insult as opposed to the merits of ideas. People, from both sides, often forget the invaluable willingness to consider that they may have missed or misunderstood something.

But, this all still leaves me, despite it all, unable to ever “agree to disagree” on one issue: the virtues of Donald Trump. We can agree to disagree on Scott Walker and Paul Ryan but not Trump. Knowing and caring about people across the political spectrum helps me understand the complexity of people, not easily boiled down to good or bad.

People I love and admire will vote for Trump, and I will still love and admire them. But, there is nothing I have ever had deeper conviction of than Trump’s pernicious harm to this country’s democracy and conscience. So, of his virtue, I will never tire of disagreeing because of what I believe is at stake.

Magnifici and Tiffany Miss Mark Dear Editor, Incumbents State Assembly Member Gae Magnifici and US House Representative Tom Tiffany missed a huge opportunity to explain their COVID-19 response and actions to help ebb the rising tide of Covid-19.

Last week’s voter guide had the very simple question of “what should the state’s role be in the recovery?”

Assembly-member Magnifici first answered with a belief in personal responsibility and “wearing a mask when appropriate” and stating we have to “work together to slow the spread of Covid -19”. Actions speak louder than words. Plenty of social media photos and observations at many local meetings show that appropriate mask wearing is really not a priority for the Incumbent State Assembly Member.

For his part Rep. Tiffany did not even respond to the question. As fiscal conservatives, I would think that both of our incumbents would be ready to offer ideas to help with the pandemic and to set an example.

The cost of lax adherence to guidelines is astronomical. Advocating just for keeping businesses open without regard to prevention is shortsighted.

Covid -19 has been an opportunity to look beyond ourselves and wear a mask for the people around you – whether you know them or not, and regardless of their political stance. Covid-19 virus does not discriminate.

Republican Chris Christie, former Governor of New Jersey, is now urging Americans to wear a mask after he spent 6 days in the ICU and feared for his life. He even had the benefit of checking himself straight into the hospital. He and our President had similar hospital courses of being able to “check in” and getting cadillac medical treatment, not something everyone else will have the benefit of receiving.

Mending Booth At a recent church fair, a mending booth was a great hit.

All service was volunteered, and the ordinary mending materials, such as thread, darning cotton and patches, were donated. Anything else needed was furnished by the customer.

A reasonable rate was charged, and anything was mended, from fine lace to boys’ stockings. All the bachelors in the place seized the opportunity to have their clothes fixed up.

Thieves made off with 15 guns and more than 100 boxes of ammunition after breaking into Wood Sports Shop in Clear Lake early Wednesday, Oct 22.

In addition, two hunting bows and 24 gun cases were also taken. Value of the merchandise is more than $3,600. There have been no arrests in the case.

Americans Eat Much Meat According to an English journal, Americans are the greatest meat eaters of the world with an average per capita consumption of 175 pounds a year. The largest part of this meat is beef, although the English, known as beefeaters, average only 110 pounds of meat.

The French eat only half as much as the English, and the consumption is still less in Germany, Austria and Italy.

Heel Holds Powder A hollow heel that serves as a powder box has been invented in England. In appearance the heel looks like the ordinary high heel of a woman’s shoe, but whenever the wearer wishes to powder her nose she simply releases a catch at the back of her shoe and the powder box heel swings down on a hinge, releasing a powder puff.

90 Years Ago November 6, 1930 Community Club Enjoys Fine Meeting One of the finest meetings of the Amery Community Club held in many months convened at Fischer’s Tea Rooms Monday evening and after a fine dinner, many matters of importance were discussed and definite action taken on several matters.

The absence of friction and a wholehearted spirit of cooperation prevailed to the decided satisfaction of all present.

The matter of holiday decorations and the Christmas tree for the children of the community as well as the Christmas baskets for the needy was left to a committee. J. G. Burman and R. M. Houger each donated five fifty-pound sacks of flour to be distributed with the Christmas cheer gifts. Others signified their willingness to contribute to the fund.

The reindeer celebration was also given the approval of the club and the date for their arrival was set for the afternoon of November 22nd.

45 Years Ago November 4, 1975 Police Seek Pranksters

with sufficient intelligence to know a gear shift would know his right hand from his left and know enough to stay on the right side of the road.

Many, however, do not, since driving on the wrong side of the road is one of the commonest causes of accidents.

80 Years Ago October 31, 1940 Rain Breaks Long Drought in District Rainfall measuring over an inch, which drenched the ground and started farmers plowing this week, broke a dry spell of nearly two months in the Amery community Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Sam Vassau, weather observer, measured 10 hundredths of an inch Monday, and .96 of an inch Monday night and Tuesday morning.

The last good rain here was on the night of July 31 and the day of August 1 when 2½ inches fell. Crops had been well enough along so that the subsequent dry spell was not fatal to them.

In September only .24 of an inch fell during the entire month.

Polk, St. Croix and Barron counties were the driest in the state in September. That month likewise was the second driest September since weather bureau records were kept in Wisconsin, and the driest since 1891.

70 Years Ago October 19, 1950 Electrical Storm Causes Extensive Damage Monday, Oct. 16, will go down in local annals as the worst thunderstorm in recent history. While it isn’t possible to catalog and record all extent of the damage done, it is without

doubt one of the most costly ever to strike this section of the country.

Beginning in the early morning hours, the concentration of scintillating flashes and simultaneous claps of thunder rocked this fair city and the immediate area. Surprisingly enough, the electrical display was concentrated in a rather small area with Clear Lake getting very little rain and no high-powered display. Rain extended southward just a little ways past the county line. But the residents of Amery can attest to the ferocity of the storm…some more than others.

About 8:30 a.m. as the Melvin (Pete) Hayes family breakfasted, lightning struck near enough to the enYesterday’s knock tire family flat News on the floor.

They were Diane Stangl momentarily stunned but soon recovered damage, however, could be noted with exception of the electrical circuit.

“That’s as close as I want to come!” emphatically declared Dr. H. Alme when a bolt of lightning struck near enough to him in his home about the same time, to knock him flat on the floor. He theorized that it entered through the radiator and heating system.

After being stunned for a while, he suffered no other ill effects from the blast.

Throughout the countryside, many cattle were reported killed in the narrow path of the storm.

Oliver Baillargeon rushed him to Amery where he was found to have suffered some burns and paralysis affecting his speech, one arm and other portions of his body. Hair on the back of his head and chest was completely singed off.

Fire was later discovered in the daybed but it was extinguished without any great damage.

55 Years Ago October 28, 1965 Vandals Demolish Range Phone Booth An estimated $250 worth of damage plus the theft of $30 to $40 in change were inflicted on the Amery Telephone Company last Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.

The public telephone booth was completely wrecked at Range with the contents taken including the funds and the pay phone.

Authorities are checking several leads in the case with Barron County authorities that have indicated some information pertaining to their identity.

November 4, 1965 New Dairy Queen Now Being Built O. F. Anderson & Son are building a new style Dairy Queen on the corner of Central and Keller in the city, just across from the Iverson Implement & Motor Co. Preparation for the new unit started Tuesday of this week.

Plans call for the demolition of their present Dairy Queen in front of their Super Valu Store.

45 Years Ago October 28, 1975 No Spanking at Amery Schools

On Road to Recovery From Electrical Shock Apparently on the road to recovery at the Amery Hospital is N. A. Husten, 70, farmer in the Deronda community, following a close call with death when lightning struck him as he lay on a daybed in his home Monday morning.

The bolt shattered the glass in the living room. It was believed to have followed the phone wires to the daybed he was reclining upon at the time.

Supt. Robert Froehlich of Amery schools says he anticipates no changes in the method of disciplining pupils despite a U.S. Supreme Court decision last week, which permits “spanking” in certain circumstances.

“We feel that spanking is a punishment which should be administered by parents,” declared the superintendent.

The Supreme Court ruled on Monday, Oct. 20, that youngsters may be spanked against the wishes of their parents as

Amery police officers are continuing an investigation following a complaint that a Deronda youngster received two candy bars, which contained hazardous objects while trick or treating in Amery.

Chief Vern Burke said that an unidentified youngster allegedly was given two candy bars, one with a pop tab and a second with a razor blade embedded inside.

The youngster, according to the chief, had concentrated activities in an area from Riverside Blvd. to Harriman Ave. Further confusing the investigation is the fact that the youngster stopped to exchange candy with another party before going home.

Chief Burke said that he would appreciate any information, which might be pertinent to the investigation.

A firecracker was exploded inside an outdoor telephone booth. A juvenile was taken into custody following the incident.

Paint was sprayed on a couple of windows and some bricks at Amery High School and a flagpole was bent.

Chief Burke said that young people helped “police” their own ranks, which contributed to low levels of vandalism.

40 Years Ago November 4, 1980 Amery Tires Slashed on Halloween Amery Police Chief Mike Holmes said that Halloween in Amery was very quiet, except for a series of tire slashings.

Most serious damage was reported by Amery Ford-Mercury, where 18 tires were punctured with a sharp instrument.

The damage was done to 16 tires on used vehicles and two tires on new vehicles.

Other tire slashing occurred at the Robert Tilton residence, 718 Wisconsin Ave. where three tires were punctured, and the Robert Janis Jr. pickup truck, which suffered two slashed tires while the vehicle was parked behind Wayne’s Café.

“This is clearly criminal damage to property and we are in the process of gathering leads,” Holmes said.

Shirley A. Dzubay Nov. 15, 1929- Oct. 24, 2020 Shirley A. Dzubay, a former resident of Clear Lake and Osceola, died Saturday, Oct. 24 at Dove Healthcare & Rehabilitation in Rice Lake. She was 90.

She was born Nov. 15, 1929, at Osceola to Herman a and Emily (Engelhardt) B Beyl and was baptized at Z Zion Lutheran Church in E East Farmington.

The family had a hardsscrabble existence during tthe Great Depression. Her d dad had to travel to work c construction jobs, while h her mother nurtured six c children and took in sewing tto make ends meet. Shirley a attended school through the seventh grade in Osceola area, before the family moved to Clear Lake, where her father oversaw area generating facilities for then-Northern States Power.

She worked as church organist and a dental assistant through high school.

After graduating Clear Lake High School in 1947, she attended nursing school at Swedish Hospital, Minneapolis, earning her RN in 1950.

She married Nicholas S. Dzubay on Sept. 9 that year at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, Clayton.

While she worked at the student health service on St. Paul campus, her husband completed veterinary school at the University of Minnesota. Upon his graduation, the couple moved to Cameron where he served as a fieldman for Abbott’s Dairies and operated a large-animal practice.

In 1965, the family moved to Lake Elmo, Minn., for a year as Nick completed a Master of Public Health degree. The next year, they returned and built a home at Barron, where Nick was hired as USDA Inspector in-charge at then-Jerome Foods, now Jennie-O Turkey Store.

Shirley began working as a clinic nurse with Maser, Cotts, Christiansen & Henningsen Ltd., at Rice Lake, in 1966. She continued as the group became Indianhead Medical Group and later, Marshfield Clinic. She retired in 2001.

She was a talented seamstress, making most of her daughters’ clothes, and frequently spinning out bridesmaids dresses, prom gowns and costumes for school musicals. Shirley was an avid reader of books and newspapers, and an excellent cook and baker. She loved music, playing piano, and singing in the church choir until shortly before she took ill.

After Nick retired, the couple enjoyed traveling to Arizona, California, Hawaii and beyond, visiting visit family and friends. They celebrated their 60th anniversary a year before his death in 2011.

Shirley remained in the home they built until she suffered a debilitating stroke on Aug. 2.

She is survived by a daughter, Paula McDaniels of Barron; and son Steven (Susan), of River Falls; grandchildren Masha (Laith) Hodi, of Denver; Anne McDaniels of Los Angeles; Mary McDaniels of St. Paul; Nick (Christina) Geeza of Chicago; Ella Dzubay, Elmwood, and Isaac (Elisse) Dzubay, DePere.

Also, four great-grandchildren, Vivi and Zain Hodi, and Jorge and Alexandra Geeza. Also surviving are sisters Norma Wulff of St. Paul, and Carolyn Trull of Oakdale.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Alexa and son-in-law Boris Geeza; brothers Robert, Donald, and David.

Because of the ongoing pandemic, a private funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 30 at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, 523 First St., Clayton. Fr. Christopher Wojcik will officiate, with burial in the church cemetery. For livestream directions, visit www.htocclayton.org.

Viola R. Kirk Viola R. Kirk, age 92 of Clear Lake, WI, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, October 23, 2020 at her grand-daughter’s home in New Richmond WI. Viola Ruthie (Johnson) Kirk was born on March 222, 1928, in Knapp, WI the d daughter of Victor & Eva ((Burton) Johnson. She g grew up in Knapp WI, and g graduated from Boyceville H High School with honors in 11946. Viola was married to G Glen “Bud” Kirk on August 330, 1947. They lived on the ffamily farm in Emerald, W WI, until 1957 when they m moved to their farm in C Clear Lake, WI, where they farmed until 1979. Together they raised 11 children, Sandra, Michael, Shari, Patricia, Richard, Carla, Cindy, Ronald, Peggy, Denise & Thales. After Bud’s death in 1979, Viola moved into the Village of Clear Lake, WI. During that time, she worked several jobs, including waitress at various restaurants, baking at “Jer- Jil's”, and a number of years at Nova Tran where she retired in 2003 at age 75. In 2008, Viola moved to Clayton to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She lived there until May of 2017 when she was moved to Willow Ridge Healthcare facility in Amery. For the last 10 days, she was able to be at her grand-daughter's, where she was able to rest peacefully and could be surrounded by her family and receive the many hugs and kisses needed by her. In her spare time, Viola enjoyed dancing to polka music, bowling, playing softball, picking strawberries, playing 500 and Scrabble. She loved to cook and bake for her family

It was the last trip where she attended at dance and met Jim Shafer and they were married within a year. Jim was transferred to Buena Park CA and the family of 5 lived in Anaheim CA for 6-7 years. After Jim’s death, the family moved to Helen’s beloved Wisconsin, where she resided in Clear Lake until 19?? at which time she returned to Oregon with her daughter Kathi.

Helen worked as a bank teller most of her life in nearly every place of residence.

Passions: Her children, great-grandson James, pets, animals in general, the Oregon coast, books, old movies.

When she retired from US Bank in ???? she realized a life-long dream of living on the Oregon coast.

She lived with her son Mike in Salem for the last two years of her life and enjoyed watching the wildlife right outside her window.

Fall back to standard time This weekend it is as they say, “Time to fall back.”

The first weekend of November marks the end of daylight saving time. Daylight saving time ends Sunday, Nov. 1 at 2 a.m. The first thing on the minds of most, is too set back their clocks, but it is a good opportunity for conducting safety checks in your home.

“As you reset the clocks, take a moment to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and check the supplies in your emergency kits,” said Dr. Darrell Williams, Wisconsin Emergency Management administrator. “The few minutes it takes to make sure they are working properly and are fully stocked could help save your life.”

Smoke detectors sound the alarm when there’s a fire in your home, and it’s important the devices are kept in good working order. The National Fire Protection Association says three out of every five home fire deaths occurred when smoke detectors were either not present or were not working properly. Detectors should be tested monthly and should be replaced

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea, and confusion. At high levels, carbon monoxide can cause death within minutes. If you suspect you or someone may be experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning, or your detector sounds an alarm, go outside immediately for fresh air and call 911.

If you have an emergency kit at home, now is a great time to check for expired products or items that may have been borrowed for other purposes and need to be replaced. Pay attention to items such as batteries, first aid supplies, and food, which should be replaced regularly. Having a well-stocked kit is important, in the event you lose power or are stuck at home during a winter storm.

ARNELL MEMORIAL HUMANE SOCIETY

NO BAKE APPLE CHEESECAKE DIP Treat yourself with some No Bake Apple Cheesecake Dip and graham crackers! This creamy, dreamy dip only takes about 5 minutes to whip up!

Ingredients 21 ounces apple pie filling (1 can) 8 ounces cream cheese softened 1/4 cup caramel sauce 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 cup powdered sugar 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon salt Toppings Caramel sauce, Diced apple, Chopped nuts Instructions Add apple pie filling, cream cheese, caramel, and vanilla into a medium mixing bowl.

Use a hand mixer to cream everything together for 1 to 2 minutes. Use the mixer to help chop the apples into small pieces.

Add the powdered sugar and cinnamon, and then mix until combined.

Transfer the dip to a serving bowl. Top with a drizzle of caramel, chopped nuts, and some diced apple if desired.

Serve immediately or cover and store in the fridge for 30 minutes to 1 hour to let the flavors blend and the dip set up a bit. We like dipping graham crackers, nilla wafers, or sliced apples in this dip.

Dodger is a tall, dark and handsome Husky-Shepherd-Retriever Mix. His coat is glossy black with cream markings.

Dodger is a young dog, one year old with puppy manners, sitting for treats, walking on leash and meeting people. He gets excited easily and forgets his size but is easily trained. Dodger likes to play fetch. He puts all of his focus to the task of retrieving at warp speed and returning it for another chance to play ball. His love of the chase got him in trouble in his previous home where he learned to chase squirrels, cats and chickens. This handsome boy loves people, loves attention and is very smart. Mikey is a wee lad, just eight weeks old. He is LIght Grey Tabby and White with a purring motor like no other. Otis is 13 years old, also White and Light Grey. Otis loves people and attention as much as Mikey. He has had a rough go of it the last few years. Otis was an indoor pet who was forced to live with a colony outdoor of cats. His easy going manner led him to a savior who recognized his indoor

manners and brought him to the safety of our shelter to find a new indoor home.

Tank and Forrest are also available. Tank is a two year old Boxer-Bulldog Mix. He is a big hearted lug, Red and White with an extra large head. Forrest is a two year old Golden Retriever Mix who lived on the streets in

Snowmobile Safety – DNR: Any person born on or after 1/1/1985 and who has reached the age of 12 must have a snowmobile safety certificate to operate a snowmobile in WI. Age 11+ can take the class, but the certificate is not valid until age 12.

WHAT A FIND! CCC Footlocker from Interstate Park discovered at local barn sale CONTRIBUTED

Recently discovered at a Dresser barn sale, this is a special little trunk. Painting on the top of the trunk and stencils and stickers inside the trunk verify this to be an authentic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) issue footlocker. This footlocker was the property of a CCC member who worked at Interstate and Pattison State Parks in the mid-1930’s. The footlocker is in exceptional condition. Unfortunately, we have been unable to locate the owner of the locker. Please assist us in solving the mystery if you can!

The CCC was a voluntary public works relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men ages 17–28. The work of America’s young men dramatically changed the future and today we still enjoy a legacy of natural resource treasures that dot the American landscape.

The history of the Civilian Conservation Corps or CCC is beginning to fade but their legacy is forever recorded in their projects at Interstate Park and many other areas around Wisconsin and the United States. The quality of the construction of roads, buildings and steps is incredible. Excellent examples can be enjoyed at our own Interstate Park.

Planning is currently underway for an expanded CCC archive at the Interstate Visitor and Nature Center. Donated by Trudy Lorenz and Nancy Beck, the footlocker is the first item to be added to the CCC pictures already at the park.

Help us ensure that the CCC heritage is not forgotten. Can you help us find more items to add to the Interstate Park CCC archive? Please scrounge around your homes and out-buildings for anything CCC. The snowflakes just kept falling Tuesday, October 20; but not enough so, for snow totals for the actual zip code of 54001 to set a new record.

According to the Twin Cities National Weather Service, with their 5.5” Tuesday, Amery fell short of breaking the record of 8.2" in October 1925 and 6.0" in October 1938.

The main reason for the heavy snow this early was due to a strong jet stream over the northern tier of the US, and a surge of anoma-

lously cold air out of Canada.

over the Great Lakes. These systems usually result in rainy and blustery conditions for central/southern Wisconsin and Minnesota, but this one was unique in that the strong jet stream interacted matched up perfectly with the surge of anomalously cold air, so the area saw entirely snow out of this system.

A cold and snowy start to October/November does not really show any pattern in predicting a cold/snowy winter. While some of the prior snowy Octobers led to cold and snowy winters, just as many lead to warmer winters with less snow.

The public has spoken, and they want to keep speaking had two vacancies at the same time when Supervisor, Jim Edgell passed away and Supervisor, Brian Masters announced he was moving out of state.

This left Chair Chris Nelson to appoint the seats to Sharon Kelly-District 8 and Dan Ruck-District 6. The change in procedure now requires a two-thirds vote for approval. The Polk County Executive Committee will assist in in the process of reviewing candidates and the board chair would nominate the chosen candidate, who would then need the twothirds vote.

The board approved a resolution supporting veterans outreach, a resolution to urge the state to push for phone fees supporting 911 dispatching improvements, a Balsam Lake zoning change, Public Hearing for the 2021 budget and a resolution bumping the Act 150 municipal library reimbursement up five percent, from 90 to 95.

Public comments during Polk County Board of Supervisors meetings in August were a topic of debate. Chair Chris Nelson suggested they should stop verbal public comments and only allow written. In the weeks since the meeting, County Clerk Lisa Ross received over 50 written comments defending the right to have verbal comments at the meeting.

Not all Supervisors agreed with Nelson’s wishes, but did ultimately approve removing a rider in an unrelated rule of order, changing resolution that supports the spoken comment decision, which will be discussed in the future.

Also approved were a resolution to modify the procedures in the county rules of order concerning the lack of policy when it comes to vacancies left by supervisors. The country recently

Surprise swing over to State for Amery hitters CONTRIBUTED

In a season that began with a lot of uncertainties for the girls’ tennis team, a surprise finish was in store.

A week after tennis ended, the WIAA called inviting Amery to participate in the Wisconsin Team State Tennis Tournament. Eau Claire Regis, sectional champion, had withdrawn. Protocol in this situation is for the sectional runner up, Amery, to replace them at the team state tournament.

15 hours later the team was packed up and heading back to Kohler Sports Core Tennis Arena to play second seeded, Xavier. The team hustled and worked hard but came up short losing 0-7 to the now state champions.

The junior cross country runner qualified for the WIAA Division 2 State meet by finishing seventh at the Sectional meet Oct. 24 in Barron.

McAlpine finished with a time of 20 minutes, 51.7 seconds. Osceola’s Rachel Ulrich was the sectional champion at 19:03.8, defeating Barron’s Fran Peterson by 20 seconds.

St. Croix Central’s Mya Kizer finished third at 19:51.2 The Division 2 State meet is Oct. 31 at Colby High School.

Osceola was the team sectional champion, edging St. Croix Central 35-39. Both teams advanced to team state.

Meanwhile for the boys, Logan Dockendorf finished in 15th place (17:52.2). Osceola’s Quinn McDonald was the sectional champion at 16:59.3, edging Elk Mound’s Ian Hazen by three seconds. St. Croix Central’s Jakob Eggen took third at 17:08.5.

The Chieftains won the team section as well, as all five runners finished in the top 10 with 29 points. Northwestern took second with 52. Both teams

third with 110.

Barron’s Marcus Peterson placed second (17:23) and Northwestern ‘s Emmett Johnson finished third (17:34).

Dockendorf was the top Amery finisher in 11th (18:33.5). Grant Hoff was 18th (19:10.9). Samuel Kelling and Tim Kelling went 26th-27th respectively (20:29.8), followed by Aidan Ziegler’s 28th (20:35.2).

Back-to-back regional play-offs for Warrior kickers CONTRIBUTED

Amery boys’ soccer displayed some of their best performances yet in their back-to-back regional play-off games over the weekend. After a 3-day delay due to snow-covered fields, the #5 seed, Amery Warriors, took on the #4 seed, Osceola Chieftains, on Friday in Osceola. The team started on top with two goals in just the first 7 minutes of play.

Jacob Oman and Dayton White were the first to score. By the 20th minute of play, Otto Whitley and White added another two goals. The aggressive offense continued throughout the second half adding three more goals by Justin Walters (2) and Ryder Fern. The aggressive line of the defense held Osceola to just one goal and only allowed 6 shots on goal. Michael Lepak led the team with 7 clears followed by Sammy Otto with 5.

The team took home the 7-1 victory.

Just a little more than 24 hours later, Amery arrived in Rice Lake to play the #1 seed of the region. The team left nothing back as they continued to play their best of the season. Solid passing, good communication, skillful movement, and constant effort were all key factors in the low-scoring game of 0-3. Rice Lake was stopped 11 times in goal by JC Wentz, challenged in 1-on-1

tackles 7 times, and 21 clears by the defense. Leading defensive players included Joseph Bohn, Sammy Otto, and Michael Lepak. Amery drove the ball downfield to make 5 attempts on goal.

The energy and perseverance of the team was evident to the very end. This wrapped up the shortened season due to Covid-19 and the team finishes with a record of 4-4-1.

Somerset ends Amery’s volleyball season

Consistency and tempo killed the Amery volleyball team’s chances against Somerset in the first round of the WIAA Division 2 playoffs Oct. 20.

Somerset eliminated the Warriors 25-22, 25-18, 29-17.

“The girls played hard and kept fighting until the last point, but we ended up with too many errors on our side in some close games and just couldn’t get into a rhythm,” explained Amery coach Lisa Markee.

Jenna Hendrickson led the offense with 14 kills, followed

by Mariah Waalen’s nine.

Drew Granica added four.

Hendrickson added two blocks.

Hannah Van Someren recorded 34 set assists.

“The end of any season is always difficult and even more so when you feel like you weren’t able to get into your

game,” Markee continued.

“This group of seniors has so much to be proud of and has brought so much to our program. They leave some big

shoes to fill…but also lots of opportunities for next year’s players to take what they have learned over the years and from this year’s seniors and

keep moving us forward.”

Have you ever felt passionate about a subject but never thought you could do anything about it? Did you know that you can start a ripple effect of positivity or negativity in your own world? Scary stories It’s the season for all things scary and I found myself wondering how many people are actually looking for more things to frighten them this year.

There is a new horror movie about Zoom that is supposed to be terrific… and I won’t be watching it. I’ve never been a fan of horror movies. On the very few occasions I’ve tried to watch a scary movie, I end up both covering my eyes and plugging my ears (the ominous music is the worst part of it) and I end up with a pretty limited experience of the film.

A few weeks ago, I wrote a column about my husband, Peter’s war The with the rodents, and a Postscript friend sent the lyrics to Carrie Classon “Ben,” a song recorded in the early 1970s by a young Michael Jackson. It was the theme song for the movie, “Ben,” which was a sequel to “Willard,” which Peter then decided he had to see.

The movie is only recently available on DVD and so, when it arrived in the mail, we sat down together to watch it.

“This isn’t a horror movie, is it?” I asked Peter for the second or third time.

“No! It’s about rats!”

That didn’t really answer the question, but I agreed to watch until it got too scary and so I sat with him through the opening credits. The movie starred Ernest Borgnine as the mean boss and Elsa Lanchester (who played the bride of Frankenstein a few decades earlier) as Willard’s mom, and a 19-year-old Bruce Davison as Willard. But the real stars of the movie were a lot of rats playing themselves.

And Peter was right, there was nothing remotely scary about the movie until the last fifteen minutes when Willard turns

homicidal and enlists the rats to help him. Then the rat named Ben reads the word “pesticide” on the box that Willard is pouring into the rat’s dinner bowl (or possibly recognizes the skull and crossbones?) That’s when Willard is killed by his little rat friends.

Afterward, I watched a few interviews about the making of the movie. This was before the days of computer-generated imagery and to get the last scene, Bruce Davison was covered with peanut butter and had 600 rats poured on top of him. They said they shot this scene last because they weren’t quite sure how it all would all work out.

I didn’t learn how much the young Mr. Davison was paid for his role, but I’m guessing it was not enough.

The movie was a huge and unexpected success when it was released, and a slew of killer animal movies followed. There were movies about snakes and killer ants and, of course, “Jaws,” a bit later on. The movie also apparently prompted an uptick in pet rat adoptions.

The idea of horror fascinates me. There are movies and books about dolls and babies and clowns and all sorts of things that wouldn’t, under normal circumstances, be scary. I can read horror novels only because I can put the book down and reassure myself that I am still in my home, no monsters in sight.

And maybe that’s why we need scary stories right now more than ever.

It’s good to leave a scary world and realize that everything is not as terrible as the book or movie. Real life might be less certain than usual, but I can take comfort in the fact that I’m not covered in peanut butter with 600 rats swarming all over me.

Sometimes, you have to take what comfort you can get.

There’s a busy Halloween weekend ahead of us Happy Halloween! I have my pumpkins sitting outside but before we can carve or decorate them, I have to get the snow off…CRAZY! The vote should not be cast in any other manner. Not more than five minutes’ time shall be allowed inside a voting booth. Sample ballots or other materials to assist the voter in marking his or her ballot may be taken into the booth and copied. The sample ballot shall not be shown to anyone so as to reveal how the ballot is marked.

Spoiled Ballots If a voter spoils a paper or optical scan ballot, he or she shall return it to an election official who shall issue another ballot

in its place, but not more than three ballots shall be issued to any one voter. If the ballot has not been initialed by two inspectors or is defective in any other way, the voter shall return it to the election official who shall issue a proper ballot in its place.

The voter may spoil a touch screen ballot at the voting station before the ballot is cast.

After Voting the Ballot After an official paper ballot is marked, it shall be folded so that the inside marks do not show, but so the printed endorsements and inspectors’ initials on the outside do show. The voter shall then deposit his or her folded ballot in the proper ballot box or deliver the ballot to an inspector for deposit and leave the polling place promptly.

After an official optical scan ballot is marked, it shall be inserted in the security sleeve so the marks do not show. The voter shall then insert the ballot in the voting device and discard the sleeve, or deliver the ballot to an inspector for deposit. If a central count system is used, the voter shall insert the ballot in the ballot box and discard the sleeve, or deliver the ballot to an inspector for deposit.

The voter shall leave the polling place promptly.

After an official touch screen ballot is cast, the voter shall leave the polling place promptly.

A voter may select an individual to assist in casting his or her vote if the voter declares to the presiding official that he or she is unable to read, has difficulty reading, writing, or understanding English, or that due to disability is unable to cast his or her ballot. Gasoline demand drops to lowest level in four months As of print time October 27, Amery’s gas pumps were holding at $1.99 a gallon, the lowest in some months.

Gasoline demand has dropped significantly since the beginning of the month, down from 8.8 million b/d to 8.2 million b/d, according to the latest Energy Information Administration (EIA) report. This latest demand measurement is the lowest since mid-June. While the drop isn’t out of the ordinary for this time of year, people tend to drive less in the fall, it is a staggering 14% less than last October. On the week, gasoline stocks increased to 227 million bbl, putting total supplies at a 4 million bbl surplus compared to this time last year.

“The U.S. has a very healthy level of gasoline stocks due to lower demand and that is keeping gas prices low,” said Nick Jarmusz, Director of Public Affairs for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “The majority of states have cheaper gas prices compared to last month, many paying 3 to 8 cents less. That downward trend at the pump is likely to continue.”

This summer brought an increase in demand compared to spring, but with coronavirus cases increasing, activity at the pump is declining – both fill-ups and prices. Today’s national average is $2.16, which is the same price as last week, 2 cents cheaper than last month and 44 cents less than last year. On the week, only five states saw gas prices increase: Ohio (+7 cents), Kentucky (+6 cents), Michigan (+5 cents), Indiana (+1 cent) and Illinois (+1 cent). Of the states with cheaper weekly prices, 20 averages are 2 to 5 cents less than last Monday.

It is a little more than a month until the end of the Atlantic hurricane season, which is proving to be one of the most active on record. A threat to the Gulf of Mexico - Tropical Storm Zeta - is forecasted to become a hurricane by Wednesday. The National Hurricane Center is warning the storm could bring storm surge, rainfall and high winds from central Louisiana to the western Florida Panhandle later this week. It’s most likely that Zeta, similar to other tropical storms and hurricanes from earlier this season, will not have an impact on gas prices nationally due to the high level of gasoline stocks in the United States.
