Thin ice claims life of Rice Lake man, investigation continues Rice Lake, Wis.—A missing persons investigation turned into a recovery mission over the weekend in Barron County, when a stray helmet pointed searchers to the icey waters of Rice Lake. On Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 8:54 a.m. the Barron County Sheriff’s Department received a call of a possible missing person that may be on a snowmobile. Deputies responded to the residence of the missing person just north of Rice Lake and did not locate the subject but the snowmobile was missing. A search of the area lakes and trail was conducted. At 9:48 a.m. a friend out looking for the missing person did report a snowmobile helmet on the ice by the Stump Lake Bridge north of Rice Lake.
Deputies from the Sheriff’s Department along with the Rice Lake Police Department, WI State Patrol, Rice Lake Fire Department, LMC Ambulance and WI DNR responded to the scene. The Chetek Fire Department Dive team was also called to the scene. Rice Lake Fire deployed firefighters in cold water suits into the water near the bridge and they did locate a snowmobile in the water. The DNR then used their ROV, an underwater remote controlled video submarine to look for the missing person. About 11:15 a.m. the ROV did locate a body and fire personnel from Rice Lake and Chetek Fire removed him from the water. The deceased snowmobiler was identified as Todd Kane, 42 from
Rice Lake. Kane was an employee of Don Johnson Motors of Rice Lake. No further information has been released as to the cause of the accident. The case remains under investigation by the Barron County Medical Examiner’s Office, the WI DNR and the Barron County Sheriff’s Department.

Barron woman dies in one-vehicle crash A Barron woman lost her life in a one-vehicle accident that remains under investigation this week. On Friday January 6, 2017 at
9:05pm the Barron County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call of a car vs. tree accident at the intersection of 10 ½ Ave and 13th St, south
of Barron. Deputies from the Barron County Sheriff’s Department along with the Gold Cross Ambulance and Barron Fire Department responded. Upon arrival deputies located a lone female occupant, Kerensa Davenport, 44 of Barron deceased in the car. Initial investigation shows that the vehicle was travelling east on 10 ½ Ave and failed to stop for a stop sign at 13th Street, went off the road and struck a tree. The driver was not wearing a seat belt. The Barron County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Barron County Sheriff’s Department are still investigating this accident.

An Osceola man was arrested December 29 when officers executed a search warrant and found a significant marijuana growing operation at the home. According to reports, 33-year-old Kevin J. Palmer was home at the time with his grandparents and three minor children. Authorities reported an overwhelming smell of marijuana as they entered the residence. Palmer Authorities recovered 253 grams of marijuana from the home, including 41 plants, along with three
more plants in a detached garage. Reports also say that part of the recovery included packaged processed marijuana, along with several empty bags from Colorado. Paraphernalia, including a pipe and a scale were also recovered. Palmer has a previous felony level marijuana conviction from Washington State. He was arrested for possession with intent, manufacturing marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia. Palmer was charged with two Class H felonies related to his intent to deliver, each punishable with up to $10,000 in fines and six years imprisonment.
