A virtual gift from God BY APRIL ZIEMER EDITOR@THEAMERYFREEPRESS.COM

A brief meeting of the Amery City Council September 2 saw the approval of most items on the agenda. It was decided a few could use a little more discussion. The first item of two, which was determined to need more decision-making time was turning Water Street into a One-Way street, with parking on only one side of the road. Council President Rick Van Blaricom asked if the city had heard anything from residents of Waters Edge concerning this subject and wondered if they even were aware of the possible change. No calls to the city had been received. They said this was a request of an independent citizen. “It is pretty narrow through there,” said Councilperson Chad Leonard. Van Blaricom said, “There are lots of good reasons for it, but most of them against it are 85 years or SEE WATER STREET, PAGE 2

Last spring saw schools come to a halt, regular business for many entities come to a halt and church as Sunday worshipers knew it to be, unfortunately come to a halt. Local parishes had to think quick and that is exactly what Neighbors United In Christ (NUIC) did. NUIC is made up of three congregations with one mission: Using their hands for God’s work in their communities and throughout the world. It is comprised of Deronda, Little Falls and Trinity Lutheran Churches. Missionary Frank Laubach once said, “Prayer at its highest is a two-way conversation-and for me the most important part is listening to God’s replies.” Members of NUIC have been doing a lot of listening lately. Listening to the word of the Lord through radio and podcasts. Pastor Lori Peper said, “Not all of our parishioners have Internet, so we wondered what to do when we were no longer able to meet for in-person worship. Bob at WPCA was a

blessing to us. He helped us get a spot to be played on the radio station on Sundays.” The church worship services are also featured on podcasts that people are tuning into

from all over the world. “It is a little different format, maybe a little more casual than what we would do in-person,” said Peper. While some churches are using video technology, members of NUIC are virtually attending church through the airwaves. SEE NUIC, PAGE 2

Local VFW continues to give to community BY APRIL ZIEMER EDITOR@THEAMERYFREEPRESS.COM

The initials VFW are probably quite familiar to people, everything the Veterans of Foreign Wars do for their communities, might be a little less known. According to the organization, the VFW is a nonprofit veterans service organization comprised of eligible veterans and military service members from the active, guard and reserve forces.

They trace their roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves. The VFW site says that in their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations that

would eventually band together and become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. Today, membership stands at more than 1.5 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary. In Amery, local VFW and Auxiliary members have been recently giving thanks to those SEE VFW, PAGE 2
