daughters, eleven year old Anna Parish of Amery, and ten year old Maria Hamlin of St. Paul. Joan has volunteered at the Middle School in the past, sometimes having lunch with the kids. “Anna has told me about some of her friends at lunch who just don’t have much to eat,” says Joan. The empathy for her friends and knowledge of the local ‘Backpack’ program gave Anna an idea.

And Joan says that when her two granddaughters get together those ideas can sometimes be a little wild and crazy. “They kept asking ‘What can we do for a project?,’ and they finally came to me with this idea,” says Joan.
