Polk County could close its lime quarry at the end of the year if a recent proposal is approved by the county board. Brad Olson of Clam Falls, the county’s District 1 representative, says the quarry will soon become an economic drain on county taxpayers. “Sitting here I have to look at dollars and cents,” he said. “At some point in the next few years the county is going to be asked to invest three-quarters of a million dollars on equipment. […] Even with interest-free loans I’m concerned about how we’d pay it back.” Residents and county board supervisors pushed back against the proposal at last Wednesday’s EnviTHURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 33, 2222 ronmental Services Committee meeting. But if a farmer has a combine and it gets old, you replace it. They need this in the area. There’s no place else to go.” District 14 Supervisor John Bonneprise, Alden, echoed concerns that if the quarry were sold, farmers might not have ready access to agricultural lime. “If were would sell this to another enterprise, I

Bicycle – Pedestrian master plan gets committee approval BY TOM STANGL TSTANGL@THEAMERYFREEPRESS.COM
The bicycle and pedestrian master plan developed by a task force earlier this year has moved a step closer to reality. Last week, the city council’s Public Works and Parks and Recreation committees each voted to recommend to the council that the 35-page plan be adopted. Peter Henry, a member of the task force that drafted the plan, appeared
at both committee meetings to urge that the plan be adopted. He told the Parks and Recreation committee that after the plan is adopted, work finding grant monies to pay for some of the projects can get underway. Many of the funding sources the task force has identified will require the city to spend one dollar to get four dollars back. “Sometimes you need to invest to help your community,” Henry said. The plan calls for paving the sec-
tions of the Stower and Cattail State Trails within Amery’s city limits to facilitate development of the Warrior 10K Trail which would include additional developed trailways as a centerpiece of the program. Two smaller loops using the Stower and Cattail Trail as their foundation are also part of this plan: a two-mile northern loop and a 5K southern “School Loop” that both serve as “Safe Routes to School” infrastructure. From the plan: “To create the
