Marching to the beat of Pomp and COVID Circumstance

The Amery High School (AHS) Class of 2020 was born during 9/11 and will graduate during a pandemic. You could say these circumstances have given them the resolve to rise above challenges, no matter the situation. One thing they have learned outside of the classroom, is life will no doubt, continue to be unpredictable.

Three AHS seniors have reflected on their days in Amery schools, how COVID-19 took them by surprise and offered some advice to upcoming seniors.

Jackson Henningsgard thought the last few months of his senior year would be the

craziest days of his four years of high school. “My friends and I would be so excited and

everyone would be in a good mood all the time. I was excited for the teachers to start getting

excited for us,” he said.

Henningsgard said he has missed seeing Mr. Melberg, Mrs. Moreau, Mrs. Moskal and all his friends in the halls.

Some of his best days of high school were the times spent with friends in the locker room at the hockey rink. “Since everything changed, it’s been lazy. I’ve just been watching Netflix and playing video games with friends,” he said.

He feels the event he most missed out on, is the annual senior walk through the hallways of Amery schools. “I remember my older cousin SEE SENIORS, PAGE 3A

May is Mental Health Month, and according to Paul Gionfriddo, President and CEO of Mental Health America of Wisconsin, it has never been more important than this year.

“Until now, there were still some people who believed that mental health wasn’t everyone’s concern.

They thought that mental health resources – even though they were shared with Erickson millions – were aimed at just a small group of people – the one in five who have a mental health concern in any given year,” said Gionfriddo.

“That isn’t the case today. Just weeks ago, we had no idea that all our worlds were going to be turned upside down by the coro-

navirus. Or that the associated worry, isolation, loneliness, and anxiety would be something that literally everyone – all five in five – would experience,” he said.

Hospitals and health systems play an important role in providing behavioral health care and helping patients find resources available in their community.

Amery schools work through pandemic When Governor Tony Evers mandated that all schools be closed as of Wednesday, March 18, 2020, it did not put students or staff of the School District of Amery on an early summer vacation.

Since the mandate, all schools in Amery as well as the Clubhouse childcare program have been closed, but the School District of Amery has continued school operations during this time of closure. “Amery staff have faithfully provided a remotely delivered education to our 1,500 plus students for the last two and a half months of the school year. Further, our staff have committed themselves to providing for the social and emotional needs of our students, Amery’s children. Lastly, our District has fed some 500 plus students and their families breakfast and lunch on a weekly basis since mid-March,� said Shawn Doerfler, District Administrator of Amery schools.

He said, “The staff of the School District of Amery have been paid during school closure. The Board of Education has understood from the beginning that the present circumstances are not the fault in any way of the employees of the School District of Amery. The Amery Board has taken the position, first and foremost, that our employees need to be treated as the dedicated professionals that they demonstrate themselves to be every day. In addition, the Board recognizes that even during this period of closure our employees are performing essential work in service to our students and their families.�

Doerfler said their work is essential under ordinary circumstances and during these extraordinary times their work has been vital to the safety, welfare and education of our students and thereby indispensable for families.

He explained how staff are being paid for the essential work they are performing.

Teaching staff work under a contract. The School District is obligated under the law to pay teachers whether they are here or not. Failure to pay teaching staff would be a breach of contract. Individuals are being paid the wage set forth by their contract.

Administrators and Supervisors also work under a contract, so they are in the same boat. These individuals must be paid the wage noted on their contract per the law.

Support staff (secretaries, paraprofessionals, bus drivers, custodians, clubhouse childcare workers, grounds staff) work under what is a called a letter of appointment. A letter of appointment is issued to a support staff member each year. It states what their assignment will be. They do not work under a contract.

The District is not obligated to pay support staff. “Though, the District has decided to pay support staff for they are performing essential work throughout the district. Not all support staff are working. Though, most are,� said Doerfler.

The essential work tht is being performed is completed by, in most cases, staff who are voluntarily coming in to work (i.e.- food service preparing meals to be picked up or clubhouse childcare staff caring for the children of healthcare workers). In some cases, these staff members are told they must come in. All support staff who are working during this time of school closure are being paid their ordinary hourly wage. In addition, they are receiving premium pay of $3.00 an hour extra for working during a time which presents obvious workplace hazards.

Doerfler broke down duties that have been handled by district employees.

He said, “There is a great deal of work which our teaching staff, administrators and support staff are doing during school closure.â€? The essential work which Amery staff members have performed during school closure includes: Teachers: Provided an education to our students • Provided remote instruction for all 1,500 plus students • Provided a hard copy of lessons to every student that did not have internet access at home • Contacted every student in every single class nearly every day • Conducted ZOOM meetings for their students • Created Google classrooms for students • Recorded screen-o-matic instructional videos for students • Delivered homework to student homes • Taught character education classes for students • Organized high performance Fridays – invited guest

SENIORS: Completion of year different than planned for graduates CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1A

doing it and I remember high-fiving people I looked up to in previous years,” Henningsgard said.

Proving that COVID-19 has changed the mindset of the Class of 2020, to next year’s seniors Henningsgard said, “Enjoy every day as your last because you don’t know when your last will be.”

Henningsgard plans to play Junior hockey with the North Iowa Bulls in Mason City, Iowa.

Emma Wolf plans to attend Minnesota State University, Mankato, in the fall to major in Social Work. “Due to the pandemic, I am worried Mankato will make all classes first semester online from home,” she said.

Wolf said, “Life since quarantine started has been very low key. I have absolutely no motivation to do anything. Even when I am doing absolutely nothing all day, I still cannot find any motivation to do a single page of homework. Sadly, I got my screen time on my phone up to 13 hours and gained probably 10 pounds. Leaving my house to go to the grocery store seems to be the highlight of my week.”

Before COVID-19 Wolf envisioned an exciting end to her senior year. She said, “I pictured the end of my senior year to be filled with laughter and joy with not only my friends, but my favorite teachers also.

I expected to look at our senior countdown sign hanging above the lockers every morning when I walked in late for school and to feel the excitement of walking down the stage for our graduation ceremony. I had also pictured what my senior prom would look like with my friends and I.” “Honestly, the one event I will miss the most is our senior walk through all the schools. That was supposed to be our time to say our final goodbyes and hear ‘congratulations’ from the staff. I remember watching other classes have their walk around the schools and thinking to myself, ‘I can’t wait until I can do that.”

When asked about her most memorable day in school, she said, “The one day that stands out the most during my time at AHS

would have to be the last football game this year. It was at New Richmond and I came right from volleyball practice. Me, being the lazy self I am, was too lazy to walk a mile to the field. Instead, I parked in yellow lines thinking no one would notice. Once the game was over, I walked to my car to find a parking ticket on my windshield. $30 later, I have never parked in yellow lines since.”

She has also missed her average day at AHS. “I have missed talking and laughing with my friends every day and seeing Becky Dahlberg in the lunchroom. She has missed Mrs. Larson’s CTE Academy class.

“Because most of the time I just made food and ate it with my friends at lunch,” she said.

“I will always remember the laughs with my three best friends Ally, Kenzie, and Autumn; that we had every single day and

Mark Andren the constant procrastination Olivia, Emma and I had in Ms. Lockwood’s Employability Skills class. I will remember helping my freshman friends with their problems and calling Mr. Enslin by his first name, Paul, practically every day because I knew it would make him laugh,” said Wolf.

In closing Wolf said, “High school was the worst four years and the best four years of my life at the same time. To my younger brother Daniel, who will be a senior next school year: It goes by fast. It feels like just yesterday I was walking into the High School doors for the first time as a little freshman. Do not take anything for granted because you will never know if it could be ripped out of your hands-just like that.

Make the most of your senior year and just have fun with it.”

Trent Andren thought the end of his

school year would be spent getting through classes while having fun with friends while they still had the time to do so. Andren said, “The part of the day that I miss the most is talking with teachers during breaks and lunch. All the teachers are really great people and fun to talk with.”

He said, “The thing I will remember the most from Amery High School is the teachers. They all have done a really great job in preparing us for the road ahead. They are really cool and it was great getting to know them and work with them.”

Life since school has been closed has been a little strange for him. He said, “The shift to online school has been a bit weird, but manageable. It feels like summer break, but with a little bit of schoolwork mixed in.”

Andren said the one event he was the most crushed to miss out on was band large group. “This is such a big event that takes a lot of work and preparation to practice for.

I am really sad to have missed out on my last one,” said Andren. He thinks some of his best days at AHS were spent doing field shows with the band, as they were always a lot of fun to perform.

As far as advice for next year’s seniors, Andren said, “Try to get all your stuff done as soon as possible so you don’t have to stress about it.”

Andren’s future plans include going to UW-River Falls to continue my education into physics. He said the current pandemic has not changed his plans for the future, but has impacted how he intends to pursue those plans.

The current situation has not only been hard on seniors, but their families too. Andren’s father Mark, said, “My wife and I are so sad for the seniors who will not be able to finish out their year. Milestones like the senior class trip to Interstate Park, senior band outing, their final concerts, sports seasons and even graduation have been stolen from them. We pray that these experiences will not dishearten them, but make them stronger and more resilient as they move on to the next stage of their lives. We are so proud of Trent and all of the Amery Class of 2020.”

To the Class of COVID-19

I

t’s once again graduation season. The school year is coming to a formal close and even though this year has been far from normal, the rites of passage are once again upon us.

There are very few moments in our lives that clearly delineate moving from one season to another. Graduation is one of these moments and it is all together fitting and proper we pause to celebrate the accomplishments of our loved ones.

I used to joke that without Publisher passages of life like graduation, Tom Stangl many renovation and home improvement projects would never get done. In our deepest selves, we understand the importance of these moments to the point that we are even willing to go through the added stress of replacing carpet in the living room.

Think about that. It’s really a pain to tear up and put down carpet. It’s such a pain that you only want to do it a precious few times in your life.

I was thinking this past week about the extra special life lessons learned by the Class of COVID-19. There are many, but I wanted to talk about a few here.

Nothing in life is certain. At some level, we all know this but until we are faced with the cold, hard reality of the situation, it’s easy to brush this law of the universe aside. I doubt anyone would have guessed school buildings would have effectively closed in March for the school year.

In an average year, making that bet would have been even more insane than Powerball.

You can overcome many things in life. This fact is used many times in addresses to graduates.

The Class of 2020 has learned this lesson over the past two months. From cancelled sports seasons to the loss of prom and even a formal graduation ceremony, seniors and their families have had to overcome a great deal of disappointment. Time will eventually ease these traumas, but that is cold comfort today.

In the end, family is there for you. If we have learned nothing else from the past two months of quarantine, we have learned that even if they drive you mad, your family will do what is needed to ensure you succeed.

From extended help with everything from math to physics to finding creative ways to learn, your parents walk the walk of loving care. You have to love someone to do trigonometry voluntarily.

And if you think they would have gone nuts at your graduation, you can only imagine the ends they are going to now to try to compensate for what COVID-19 has taken from you.

Cut them some slack, we are all in unimagined, yet unchartered waters.

To parents, do what you feel is right. Take solace in the fact you have brought your children through a pandemic to the cusp of adulthood. You persevered over Snapchat, peer pressure, vaping and the internet, you can get though the next few weeks.

Your extended family, the community, is celebrating with you, even if they can’t be with you. The community loves these passages. A speaker at my oldest daughter’s graduation said commencement was like the launching of a ship.

Many people played a role in the construction and wanted to be there for the christening. We all hold our breath as the ship rolls into the sea, bobbing until it finds its equilibrium.

Even if we can’t see the ceremony, we are still very proud of you.

knew at some point I would write a column for the Class of 2020.

The hard part was deciding when to do it.

At first I thought about putting something together when the last months of school as they knew it, came to an abrupt end.

I next considered July, which is Editor when a graduation April Ziemer ceremony is pending. Finally I decided the Amery Free Press’s annual Senior Edition was actually the perfect time.

When giving advice to the newest set of Amery High School’s finest, I could quote some articulate world leader, but we all know the best advice ever given has been found in the form of television theme songs.

The following words are a tribute to all of my Amery High School Class of 1995 classmates. Here’s to all of the Shirley sidekicks who were perfect matches to my Lavern personality. Thank you to all of the Lenny and Swiggys who kept me entertained during the years (you know who you are).

And now the words of wisdom…I am not talking about the part that says, “Sclemeel, schlimazel, hasenpfeffer incorporated,” as what DOES that really mean? I AM talking about, “We’re gonna do it!

Give us any chance, we’ll take it Give us any rule we’ll break it We’re gonna make our dreams come true-doin’ it our way

Whether you watch the Milwaukee based sitcom or not, I feel the theme song words especially ring true for the graduating class of 2020.

I mainly want you to focus on the verbiage, “Doin’ it our way.”

There has yet been any other set of graduates that know the way you feel. I pray there will never be another. This sets you apart.

Circumstances have made you unique. You are being set out into the world with a different mindset than any other class. I suggest you use the cards you have been dealt as a driving force to take on the world. Do it your way!

One other bit of advice; you cannot make old friends. Do not completely lose each other. You have it easier in this day and age of social media than some of us old timers had it when we graduated.

Should you make new friendsYES! Should you surround yourself with people who have had different experiences and come from various

backgrounds? Absolutely! Never ever forget where you came from though. You have spent some pretty formative years with your peers.

Some days were probably hell and I hope you had plenty of days of bliss as well. These are going to be some of the few people someday who can associate with the way you few today.

I love all of my friends, but I can honestly say the other 131 graduates of AHS 1995, happen to be some of my favorites.

Not to sound like a geezer, but I hear song “Mash-ups” are the hot thing these days, so here is a mash-up of some T.V. theme songs as some parting advice: Take the good, take the bad, take them both and there you have the facts of life…

The world don’t move to the beat of just one drum, what might be right for you, may not be right for some…

Not getting hassled, not getting hustled. Keepin’ your head above water, making a wave when you can…This is it. This is life, it’s the one you have, so go and have a ball…

OVER THE YEARS – I would rag on different issues over and over like keeping the countertops clean at home.

These days it’s how to stay clear of the virus and how to keep our newspapers running with this fear and businesses closed.

Small business is really facing challenges these days with the required stay-at-home policies. Some of the Gene Johnson larger box stores that handle multiple lines of goods have been able to stay open while many of the mom and pop stores have been forced to stay closed.

The question that is going around politically is whether people should be left to make up their own minds for their own safety rather than have government make that decision for them.

Wisconsin’s governor, Tony Evers, was overruled by the Supreme Court in Wisconsin.

I RECENTLY VISITED Mayo Clinic, which I do every four months to keep

my PSA in control. It’s affected by some cancer cells in lymph nodes that resulted in a prostatectomy more than a decade ago. I am fortunate to have Dr. Eugene Kwon, immunologist at Mayo, who is also credited with the development of the Choline pet scan, a nuclear medicine used to detect live cancer cells in the body.

In my visit with Dr. Kwon on May 14th we discussed the COVID-19 at some length. He said we had two choices. Number one, we need to develop a vaccine very quickly and distribute 350 million vials across the nation.

When the swine flu occurred, vaccine was developed and it was wiped out in six months.

Dr. Kwon feels that we are putting too much emphasis and money on testing when we need to get a vaccine developed and distributed.

The other solution is to let natural immunity take over. The older population is more vulnerable than the younger population. Some who get it will survive. Others would die. The best solution would be to get the vaccine developed.

We have had the Corona viruses before. The swine flu was a type of corona virus.

We will need to continue to practice good hygiene and wear a mask whenever we are around other people. This means whether we are shopping, at restaurants, or wherever we go we need to keep the six feet distance between us and other people. This is also true for the workplace wherever it is possible.

By the way, my tests at Mayo came in favorable. The PSA was 1.4, down from 1.7 in December. Scans showed that my cancer cells that were in the lymph nodes did not change in size.

At all the entrances at Mayo there were people checking your temperature, asking questions on health issues, and issuing a sticker that gave you access to their medical services for that day. Everyone was wearing masks and the chairs in the waiting room were marked with papers on every other seat with a message to leave a seat open.

As soon as someone left the seat it was wiped down with a disinfectant. The elevators were marked on the floor with six blocks for people to stand in. The hand sanitizer stations were readily available throughout the facility. At one entrance I asked about how many had any symptom of the virus. The person monitoring the station said they had one in 500 with a fever.

The bottom line to me is that we are all going to be wearing masks at our work and in public for an indefinite period of time. The best prevention also seems to be washing hands frequently.

There is a lot of ingenuity and creativity at work during this pandemic.

The other evening I was driving by the Acqua restaurant on Lake Avenue in White Bear Lake and I noticed a pickup truck with a table and two people sitting in it having their takeout dinner. They had a table cloth and dishes to make for a beautiful dinner setting. The temperature was not much over 60, but that wasn’t going to deter this couple from enjoying dinner overlooking the lake.

The Zoom app on our personal computer is getting used more and more in regular contacts with family, friends and even business conference calls and meetings. We have planned to meet with family once a week and every other week with a group of newspaper friends. A great way to stay in touch.

So this, too, will pass. We will slowly come back to a new normal and wearing masks may be a way of life.

Kinda a joke in a sense when we have a local small town business literally in our backyard that we do not seem to support. Toombs Septic Service has been providing porta potty services to our boat launches all these years. Sadly this year Small business owner Toombs had called to find out when to drop his orange porta potties off this year and was told when HE called that Lake Association would no longer use his due to the color orange. WHAT? Someone reported that they were offend-

U.S. Postal Service ed by the color orange. We now judge color in this town? Interesting. He has donated and supports Amery community and events and yet our town does not have the decency to even notify him, a small town owner that we are no longer using him but using someone from New Richmond. New Richmond is not Amery nor a boarder of Amery. So much for small town business support. Watch out small business owners do not use the color orange or you could be next.

Message from District Administrator As we bring the school year to a close, I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to our students, their parents and guardians, the Amery school staff, and the community of Amery.

Thank you to our kids. Going to school when you are a kid is the most common experience of any childhood. The grand opportunity of being able to attend school vanished for you in but a moment. It did not matter if you were in your first year of school in 4K or in your last year as a member of the class of 2020. Everyone was sent to their homes for an entirely different brand of learning where online school, packets in the mail, and ZOOM meetings became the mainstays of the school experience. You have handled this enormous and unprecedented change with dignity, flexibility, and patience.

Thank you to our parents and guardians. A great deal has been asked of you by the School District of Amery as you have become a teacher for your kids.

This, on top of the enormous stress your household has likely already been under, has turned your world upside down.

Please know you have admirably risen to the occasion. For that, the staff of the Amery schools is forever grateful.

Thank you to our Amery school staff. I know that what inspires you each day is

interacting in person with your students. Your students may have departed, but your dedication to them has not.

Through the recent days of the toughest circumstance education has ever endured, you have shown everyone the noblest, most beautiful, and sincere commitment to our Amery kids. You have made clear to everyone how amazing you are. Your students and their parents are so very lucky to have had you as their guide through these past few months.

Thank you to our Amery community.

No matter what, the people and businesses of Amery have always looked out for the best interests of our kids. With love and kindness, the residents of our wonderful town have stood by our kids and their parents as well as our educators as we all did the vital work of continuing to prepare our kids for their future. USPS is a non-profit, quasi-government agency and gets no taxpayer dollars, only revenues from postage and postal services. They deliver mail and packages at the same cost to cities and rural areas, 6 days a week, sometimes 7.

Every mailbox and address are treated the same, 160 million locations. Everyone has the same equal access.

Elderly and rural areas rely on USPS more than ever for the delivery of life saving medicine.

It’s the anchor of many small communities and there would be an economic loss without it. It’s not set up to put millions in the bank, or enrich stockholders or CEO’s and other top management.

Now USPS is in grave financial situation as business mailers and advertising have dropped about 50%.

The postal service has increased costs due to the virus. USPS could go bankrupt soon. The Board of Postal Governors unanimously asked the administration for help. They requested $25 billion of the $500 billion that is going to for-profit Corporations. USPS was turned down. The Administration’s claim that USPS is losing money on Amazon and other e-commerce companies is not true.

There has been some push to sell off the postal service to private industry. Private industry is a for-profit business.

What will people in small towns and rural areas pay to get their mail for a Corporation’s quick buck? Large cities subsidize small towns and rural areas. That will disappear with privatization. The postal service was founded in

1775. In 2006, Congress passed the Postal Accountability Enhancement Act, which hurt USPS. Research the act.

Another idea has been to allow private industry access to the mail box, allowing them to deliver mail to private post office boxes. Since the start of the postal system, no one has the right to mail boxes, except the post office and the individual owning the box.

Moving forward after the Supreme Court decision REP. GAE MAGNAFICI

This week, the Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down Governor Evers’ stay at home order, holding that the Governor’s health secretary had illegally promulgated the order without the approval of the Legislature.

In the coming days and weeks, the Legislature and the Governor will be drafting a new statewide plan to address Covid-19. Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said this week that he had no interest in a new order that would “micromanage” businesses. I completely agree with the Senator’s Gae statement. Small Magnafici businesses have been decimated, District 28 and some will never Representative reopen. Hundreds of thousands of peol have h l t their th i jobs through no fault ple lost of their own, and many have received no benefits because of issues at the Department of Workforce Development.

Another complete shutdown of our economy would continue to ruin lives.

Wisconsin has flattened its curve, sparing hospitals and patients from an overflow of cases. It is not the state’s role to determine how much risk its citizens choose to take in their daily lives. County health departments

have broad powers at their disposal to address localized outbreaks of coronavirus. Milwaukee and Dane counties’ restrictions will obviously be much different than those of rural counties.

The state’s new plan should prioritize increased testing, regional guidelines, and an initial plan for how we will reopen our schools in the fall.

But a lack of government-imposed restrictions does not mean that businesses are without guidance. The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) has published safety guidelines for every industry in the state. These guidelines are available on WEDC’s website. I encourage every business owner to review these guidelines and to implement measures that they can incorporate into their daily operation.

It’s also important to remember that as businesses begin to reopen, there will be a spectrum of measures in place. Many businesses will implement some form of safety measures.

Some businesses may not open at all.

Please respect the choices business owners make as they begin to get their livelihoods back. Businesses that implement social distancing measures are doing so for the safety of their customers and employees, and their decisions to do so should be respected by their customers. If you are able to do so, please continue to support the small business owners in our area that have been affected by the shutdown.

THE POSTSCRIPT

Chatting with a tree Every day I look down the trail in either direction, checking to see if anyone is coming. I’d just as soon no one knew I was talking to a tree.

I take the same hike every day.

There are a lot of trails and most folks try difThe ferent trails Postscript on different Carrie Classon days. I don’t.

I do my best thinking on my daily walk. I am not seeking variety. Some days I am seeking inspiration.

Some days I’m looking for answers. Some days I just want a little escape. More and more lately, I’ve been looking for comfort.

I visit a particular tree.

I walk by a lot of trees, but this pine is special. It may not be the oldest, but it’s awfully old. It has survived at least a couple of major fires and still wears the blackened scars around its base.

It has obviously had some close calls, but it is doing well now and it is not an exaggeration to say that this tree cheers me every single day I see it.

Every day, I risk a little embarrassment and have a word with my favorite tree.

I lean in close. “How’re you doing?” I ask.

A few weeks ago, the potential embarrassment of being caught chatting with a tree carried a lot more weight.

Right now, I’m happy to get some comfort—and perspective—wherever I can.

I don’t really expect to hear anything back. (I tilt toward the edge at times but I haven’t quite toppled over.) Still, I figure this tree has seen it all: fires and droughts, woodpeckers and chainsaws, lightning and windstorms. All around my tree are the remains of dead trees—some that died within my lifetime, some that died long before I was born. This tree has beaten the odds and is standing here today, letting me know it can be done.

Every morning I read the news and every day I realize with greater certainty that nothing is certain. I have friends and family who rely on theaters and churches and concert halls and ballrooms to make a living and right now, the only thing they know for sure is that they will not know for a very long time when or if they will get their livelihoods back.

My cousin who tours with an a cappella singing group and my brother-in-law who

stage manages corporate events and my other cousin who is a minister—they’re all wondering what their lives will look like in a month or a year’s time. They are depressed and angry and confused and anxious in turn, but mostly they are uncertain because the times are uncertain.

In these times, my tree has become a lot more important to me. This tree has seen it all.

And, although the tree doesn’t actually speak to me, it has a story to tell.

Because somehow, this old tree managed to make it. It had some luck. It sits in a low spot, where there has been more water over the eons and where fires have been more likely to hop over.

Misfortune is never equally shared and this tree has survived, not simply because it is strong, but because it is lucky.

I feel very lucky these days. I feel lucky that I can get out of my house and take these walks in nature, but luckier yet to be like this tree—in a place where there is enough water and the worst of the fire has passed over.

And no, I’m not embarrassed anymore to be chatting with a tree.

Physically distancing, not socially isolating SENATOR PATTY SCHACHTNER

Just a few months ago, none of us knew the terms “flatten the curve” or “social distancing”. It has become normal to complement our neighbors on their homemade facemasks when we see each other in public. The coronavirus pandemic has brought us a new normal that has impacted not just the way we do our jobs each day, but Senator also the way we commuSchachtner nicate and how we relate to each other. I hope that in some ways, this experience might make our relationships stronger while we come up with new ways to connect.

Normally, all of my siblings and I would gather to join my mom on Mother’s Day. This was the first time in 60 years that we weren’t all together. I know that day was hard for a lot of people, too. But I also know that it’s important to continue to limit large gatherings and protect those among us- like our parents and grandparents- that are the most vulnerable to this deadly virus.

Also like many of you, my family has found new ways to maintain our relationships and make sure that we aren’t socially isolating while we’re physically distancing. My mom and I have learned how to use Facebook messenger to video chat, and my family and I have started doing some virtual trivia nights together, while apart. There are a lot of tools

available to make sure that we continue to stay connected. We are going to need each other to make it through this crisis.

I’ve spent many years working to create initiatives and push for more resources that would support the mental health of people in Northwestern Wisconsin. Particularly in rural areas and among older populations, one of the biggest mental health issues we have faced is loneliness. Right now, more of us are experiencing those feelings of loneliness than ever before.

In the past, we may have reached out to an elderly relative to put a smile on their face. Now, it’s just as important for our own happiness that we continue to reach out and strengthen our relationships with others.

The situation that COVID-19 has caused is going to have long-term impacts on our economy and our healthcare systems. But it’s important to recognize the impacts that it will have on each and every one of us as well. Many people are experiencing stress, anxiety, and feelings of isolation for the first time due to this crisis. Those feelings are expected and valid given the circumstances. We need to continue to reach out to one another and extend a hand (virtually, of course) to lift people up when they are struggling. In the end, we are going to be living in a new world, but maybe we’ll also learn a new and better way of supporting each other when this is all over.

95 Years Ago May 21, 1925 Flying Circus The Fair Association at New Richmond is putting on an aerial circus in that city Sunday afternoon, May 24th, which includes stunt flying, auto polo, motorcycle races, auto pushball and a parachute jump.

The counter is thirteen feet long the top part enclosed in plate glass, with a commodious compartment for ice at the rear.

Elmer Tonsfeldt, a twenty-seven year old farmer living near Webster held up the Lewis bank last Saturday about noon and escaped with about $800. He was later arrested near Siren

by Burnett County officials and turned over to Polk County officials.

He waived preliminary examination in municipal court and was bond over to county court where he will appear May 23rd.

He has indicated that he will plead guilty. He told authorities that he needed the money to pay his bills.

The robber entered the bank Saturday and demanded $500, forcing two employees to lie on the floor, after giving him currency at hand. Identification of the automobile in which he fled, led to his arrest.

Tonsfeldt said he had been drinking at the time.

90 Years Ago May 22, 1930 Young Farmer Turns Bank Robber

Wooden Span Falls Into River at Stillwater Condemned a month ago, to vehicular traffic, a 150-foot section of the wooden bridge between Houlton and Still water, collapsed and fell into the St. Croix river Wednesday of last week. Although open to pedestrian traffic, no one was on the span at the time.

The bridge, built 21 years ago, will probably be replaced by a ferry within ten days. In the meantime launches will be authorized by the Stillwater Association to convey pedestrians and school children.

85 Years Ago May 15, 1935 P. O. Puts Thumbs Down to Chain Letters Postmaster W. W. Winchester, Sr., has received an official communication from W. E. Kelly, acting solicitor of the post office department at Washington, putting thumbs down on all chain letters.

The attention of all postmasters is called, warned Mr. Kelly’s letter, “to the fact that the so-called ‘send-a-dime’ chain letter scheme, and similar enterprises now being operated through the mails at various points, is in violation of the

postal lottery and fraud statutes. This information should be communicated to all persons making inquiry as to the legality of the scheme.”

75 Years Ago May 17, 1945 Roger Iverson Dies of Gunshot Wounds Roger Iverson, 13 years old is dead as the result of a gunshot wound suffered about 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. He passed away at the Clinic at 8:30 a.m.

Wednesday morning.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Iverson of Amery, Roger was playing with two other children, Robert Aus and Leon Berenschot, in the Music Store, which was being kept open by Robert Aus for his father, Aubrey Aus. All the boys involved were 13 years of age.

A preliminary hearing held here Wednesday afternoon

by Coroner Park and Undersheriff Jim Moore brought out the testimony that the wound was inflicted by Robert Aus who found the gun, an old .22 single shot pistol, in a drawer.

He stated that he knew the gun was loaded and that in play that occurred, he fired the fatal shot that struck the abdomen of Roger and lodged near the spinal cord.

Leon Berenschot was entirely absolved of any responsibility in the shooting.

Emil Iverson, who is employed at Johnson Drug store at New Richmond was immediately summoned and Roger was taken to the Clinic where an operation revealed 16 perforations in the intestines.

At the time of the shooting Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Aus were at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, where Aubrey was undergoing a very serious operation and

This chemical is being widely hailed as a preventative for tooth decay and is now in use in many cities throughout the nation.

By the way, two Amery dentists appeared before the Council and urged this measure be adopted here soon…a fact, which attests to their concern for good teeth health.

Teenagers Loot, Steal Autos Take it direct from “two of the ten most sought after criminals in Polk County, crime does not pay.

Two teenage youths, 14 and 17 years old, residing on farms between Amery and Clear Lake, came to that profound conclusion on May 10, after a posse of vigilantes apprehended them as they trudged along county trunk “J” following a “house job.”

Making the pinch were Leland Knutson, Hilding Hanson and LeRoy Knutson, all farmers in that locality, who became aroused when the home of Leland Knutson was ransacked earlier in the afternoon. The youths were brought to Chief Art Phillipson and the surprising thing about the entire affair came about when the youths admitted under questioning that they were responsible for the recent break-ins at the feed mills in Amery.

They also admitted stealing cars from the Amery Motor company lot in Amery and also from a Clear Lake garage and returning them after they were through using them. Another car was taken in New Richmond recently by the youths and returned before detection.

The missing cash register from the Amery Equity mill was dumped into the Apple River on the railroad bridge after the 40¢ was taken out. They made the entries in Amery between 7:30 and 8 p.m.

Besides breaking into the Knutson home, the boys had also committed a good deal of vandalism in the Clayton town hall, tipping over the stove and chairs and breaking a window.

They also entered the Immanuel Lutheran church and purloined some cash.

At the time of the Knutson break-in, Mrs. Knutson was away and Mr. Knutson busy in the field. However, Mrs. Knutson returned in time to notice them walking down the road and when she noted the condition of the home, immediately summoned her husband.

Apparently they planned a return to the scene for they had strewn loot along the roadside at intervals.

OBITUARIES

Courtney O. Kuckler Courtney O. Kuckler, age 94 of Amery, WI passed from this life on May 11, 2020.

He was in hospice care at Golden Age Manor in Amery, and died of cancer just a few weeks ffrom his 95th b birthday. He w was born on J June 9, 1925 in S Stacy, Minnessota to Edward a and Edna Kuckller. Courtney g grew to young m manhood in tthe Amery a area. At the age of 17 ½ years, he enlisted in the US Marine Corp. Because he was under age, a parent had to give their approval. He served from his enlistment in 1942 until 1946. He fought in Guam, the Mariana Islands, and the Invasion of Okinawa.

He witnessed the surrender of Japanese forces in China in 1945. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserve until his honorable discharge as a Private 1st class in 1952. Courtney returned to Amery, and used his GI benefits to take flight training, and earn his pilot’s license. He continued to fly into his eighties, owning almost 80 planes over the years. In 1948, he married Phyllis Wiuff of Amery.

Their marriage lasted 47 years until her death in 1995. They raised their family in St. Paul, and rural Stillwater, MN. He was an expert heavy equipment operator.

Eventually he and Phyllis started their own business, Klondike Excavating, and

ran that until they retired. They retired in Amery, building a new home. They travelled the country in their motorhome, went on fishing trips, and spent time with family. Courtney loved fast cars, Harley Davidsons, and his airplanes. He was an expert gardener, and he hunted and fished his whole life. A number of years after his wife’s death, Courtney and Imogene Curtis became friends and spent many happy days together. Courtney belonged to what has come to be called “the greatest generation”. He was frugal, hardworking, and an honest man. He always said, “A man’s word is his bond”, and if you shook his hand on a deal, you knew it would be honored.

Courtney was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 47 years, Phyllis (Wiuff); his daughter, Karen; brother, James and sister, Eleanore. He is survived by his children, Keith, Dennis and Linda; his sister, Marcelline and his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at the Williamson-White Funeral Home in Amery. A visitation will be held from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will take place at the Amery cemetery. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and all who cared so well for him in his final days.

She was married in Lehi, Utah on March 4, 1993 to Terry Creekmore.

Candi was a beautifully feisty woman, who loved to make people laugh. She loved sitting in the warm sunshine fishing, to play pranks on family and friends, playing Keno, and her dogs: Lil’ Bit, Chewy, and Cujo.

She is survived by her husband, Terry; children: Misty Hysel, Trent Creekmore, Korey Terry, Davey Mitchell, and Corey Mitchell; siblings: Debbie (Lee) Tucker, Robbie Pletcher, Kelly (Ken) Brewer, Matthew Pletcher, and Mark (Sue) Pletcher; many grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Pat Pletcher.

Judith Ann (Hurda) Luehmann, 79, died at her Star Prairie home on May 10, 2020. She was born December 1, 1940 during a snow storm in Amery, WI to John and Harriet (Jensen) Hurda. She grew up in various h homes in the Roberts area w while her mother was hosp pitalized.

She had very fond m memories of the time spent w with neighbors and friends.

Judy held many jobs over t years, Jor-gas, Pine the L Lake, Little Falls and Star P Prairie stores, CRA, and s sold Avon. We often joked t that she was her best cust tomer.

Judy loved her Lord and was a very faithful servant to West Immanuel Lutheran Church. Judy dedicated her life to volunteering and was involved with many organizations, 4-H, Cedar Lake Homemakers, Community Club, and reading programs, AMI, West Immanuel groups and many others.

Judy had a very giving heart. She was willing to give second chances and helped those who needed assistance to the right path.

She enjoyed reading, NASCAR races after church on Sunday, and music of all kinds. Judy was also known for sending Birthday and Greeting cards to brighten your day.

Surviving Judy include husband, Arlen; daughters, Shelley (Roger) Lehman, Renee (Al) Fehlen, Shari (Mike) Erdman; grandchildren, Dustin, Jessica, Amanda, Nick, Joe, Brandon, Brett and Raeann; great-grandchildren, Zane, Wren, and Soren; sister, Janet Denucci; nephews, Chuck Denucci, Chad Denucci, Mick Luehmann; niece, Wendy Bartlett; and many other relatives and friends. She will be remembered as “Gramma Judy� to many.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Harriet Hurda; son, Randy; in-laws, Edgar and Gladys Luehmann; brother-in-law, John Denucci; and niece, Anna Marie Denucci.

A family funeral will be held on Friday, May 15, 2020 at 2 pm at the Luehmann farm in Star Prairie with family viewing from 12-2 pm. Interment will be in West Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services.

Lloyd Kinder Nihiser passed away at Golden Age Manor in Amery early Sunday morning, May 3, 2020.

He was 104 years and 7 months old.

Lloyd was born in Dalton City, Illinois to Harrison a and Oma Nihiser (Underw wood) on September 20, 11915. He was the second of 6 children. He grew up and w went to school in Dalton C City. His father, Harrison, d died when Lloyd was 10 y years old. Following the d death of his father, Lloyd llived with his grandparents ffor some years. After haviing served in the Civilian C Conservation Corps in 1936, Lloyd moved to the Eureka, Wisconsin area. There he met and then married Doris Riley on May 7, 1940.

They were devoted to each other for 78 years. To their union were born 6 children. The family lived on a farm in East Lincoln where they milked cows. They then moved to Wanderoos where Lloyd and Doris raised turkeys until they retired. Lloyd's favorite pass time was working, but in addition to that, he enjoyed traveling with Doris to various destinations at home and abroad. He had a gift for creating beautiful vegetable and flower gardens. His grandchildren were blessed by the efforts he made to be a part of their lives. He was a wonderful father and grandfather. The faith in Jesus that began in his childhood blossomed in his middle years when he served Jesus though his church. Lloyd rarely missed church until last September when he was no longer able.

He will be forever missed by his sister, Evelyn, and his children: Janice (Bob) Carlson, Betty Jo (Jim) Stream, Edward (Sandi) Nihiser, Geraldine (Terry) Holland, Julianne (Sidney) Soderholm and Rebecca (Keith) Luehman; nineteen grandchildren, sixty three great grandchildren and thirty one great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Lloyd is preceded in death by his wife, Doris, his parents, his brother, Edward, and sisters, Maire, Helen, and Mae, as well as grandson, Matthew Soderholm, great granddaughter, Bobby Jo Berquam, niece, Tandra White, and nephews, Chuck Morris and Kenneth White.

A private family graveside service took place at the East Lincoln Cemetery with a Celebration of Life service to be announced at a later date. Lester H. (Speck) Gehrman, age 93 of Amery, passed away Wednesday April 15, 2020 at Golden Age Manor in Amery WI. Lester was born in Almena, WI to Emma and Fredrick (Mike) Gehrman. At the age of o one, Lester’s family moved t Amery. After graduating to f from Amery High School, L Lester was drafted into the A Army in 1945. His Army u unit was shipped to Europe a participated in the ocand c cupation of Berlin near the e of WWII. In 1948 Lester end r returned to Amery and t took a job as a custodian at t Amery High School. He the r retired from that position in 1989. Lester married his childhood friend and neighbor Lucille Maxon in 1951 at Our Saviors Lutheran in Amery. Together they built their first and only home in Amery and have lived there until recently. They enjoyed traveling through-out the US and Europe.

Their first trip abroad was to Switzerland where Lester spent time during the war. They traveled to Hawaii, England and Scandinavian countries. For many years, Lester and Lucille enjoyed dancing and often times going to the Ellsworth Polka Fest. They had two daughters, Denise and Rene. Lester enjoyed many aspects of life. With his job as a custodian, he enjoyed the people he worked with and the interaction with the students at school. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball and was an avid golfer. When he was young, before having a vehicle, he often walked many miles to and from his hunting and fishing expeditions.

When living in Amery, he would walk all the way to Lake Wapogasset to ice fish. He played town team basketball and baseball. He and Lucille would often attend high school sports like basketball and football.

Lester also enjoyed his time with family, friends and relatives. Lester is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lucille; two children, Denise (Greg) Hoelscher of Amery; Rene’ (Jeff) Derosier of Clear Lake; two grandsons, Jarid (Lisa) Derosier and Matt (Sokun) Derosier, and great grandchildren, Collin and Lacey.

He is also survived by his step granddaughter, Rachel (Andy) Bosscher and their children, Christian and Alexandra as well sister in-laws, JoAnn Gehrman and Joan Maxon; brother in-law, Marv Maxon, and other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by parents, Mike & Emma Gehrman, brothers, Marvin “Pete� (Florence) Gehrman and Vernon Gehrman; brother in-law, Bub Maxon and sister in-law, Kathy Maxon. A private family service was held on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at the Williamson-White Funeral Home in Amery. Interment was at the Amery Cemetery. How does your garden grow?

Nothing tastes better than fresh veggies and fruit on a summer day. Except, of course, if you’ve grown that produce yourself. You can almost taste the pride as you bite into your home-grown tomato.

And guess what? You don’t need to be an expert gardener to grow your own food.

Along with rain gardens and monarch butterflies, you will also find a green roof and raised bed community garden at Amery Hospital & Clinic. Here’s some tips to have success growing your own vegetable garden.

1) Build a garden bed.

A raised garden bed offers a safe and separated space for your vegetables. And with the DIY craze, there is no shortage of simple plans that anyone can build.

If you do build it yourself, be sure to use cedar or fir lumber. They can naturally handle the weather elements like rain and snow.

Pre-treated lumber has chemicals that can affect the taste and health of your garden. But if you decide to use it, make sure to line the wood with a plastic liner and cut holes for drainage.

2) Weed the right way.

Weeds can be frustrating. They can overtake a yard or garden pretty quickly. And it’s pretty tempting to grab the weed killing spray and saturate your yard. But for your garden, it’s not a good idea. While it’s made to hurt the weeds, it can also hurt people.

The best weed defense is good garden preparation. Tilling an area several times over for a few weeks can kill most of the existing perennial weeds. If you plan far enough ahead, you can also cover your future garden area with a layer of cardboard or newspaper and then several inches of mulch. If left for several months, all the weeds will be smothered and you’ll have a weed-less garden site.

You can also spray them with vinegar for a totally natural and cheap weed killer. Just make sure you don’t spray your veggies because it has the same effect on them. Of course weeding with a hoe or hand pulling is the most effective way to control weeds.

3) Keep out animals.

Animals might love your veggies as much as you do. The most effective control for them is a fence. Rabbits will be blocked by only 3 feet of chicken wire.

If you have deer, you’ll need to raise it to 6 feet. You can also use bird netting to easily protect specific plants that deer or rabbits are harming.

Repellents, whether store-bought or homemade (like soap, human hair, etc.) tend to have a short period of control.

And animals eventually get used to them. Plus, chemical ones aren’t good for you. If you do use a repellent, con-

sider a more natural approach. Options include spraying your garden with a mix of water and cayenne powder, or scattering rotten eggs in the soil. Be aware that any repellent you put on your veggies that tastes bad to them might also taste bad to you. When it comes to natural repellents, I’ve had the best luck with planting mint or marigolds alongside veggies.

4) Get rid of those pesky insects.

Another battle you might have is insects. Most gardeners that grow cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower or kale will have trouble with cabbage worms at some point. These are small green caterpillars that eat plants in the cabbage family. But they can be easily picked off.

You can also use BT pest control found at garden centers. This is naturally occurring bacteria that is fatal to the caterpillars. It has to be eaten by the

pest, so it won’t harm other beneficial caterpillars in the gardens.

Aphids can also be troublesome in gardens but can often be kept under control by spraying them off with a hose.

Otherwise, there are many natural and organic insect controls for gardens such as insecticidal soap and Neem Oil. 5) Get some good fertilizer.

Vegetables will only be as nutritious as the soil they’re growing in, so fertilizer is really important. Aged manure is great. Compost can help improve the soil, too, but generally does not have enough nutrients to be the most effective fertilizer.

Free Fun Weekend on the Gandy Dancer and Stower 7 Lakes Trails June 6 & 7 SUBMITTED

POLK/BURNETT COUNTY--Recognizing the WIDNR sponsored Free Fun Weekend and National Trails Day, State Trail Passes for bike riders will not be required on the Stower 7 Lakes, and the Gandy

Dancer State Recreation Trails, June 6 & 7.

Both trails normally require a Wisconsin state trail pass for bike riders 16 years of age and older. The passes, available locally, are good on all state trails.

The Stower 7 Lakes Trail, the newest Wisconsin state recreation trail, opened in 2010 and offers a very

scenic 14 mile ride from the trailhead in Amery to just outside of Dresser, passing next to Nye, Deronda, and Wanderoos. Take a look at www.amerywisconsin.org The Gandy Dancer State Trail has been operating for 26 years and offers a longer 47 mile route from its trailhead shared with the Interlink Trail at the Polk County Information Center in St. Croix Falls to Danbury. Four villages and unincorporated Lewis are located on the trail in Polk County, and they are all less than six miles apart. Siren and Webster are on the trail leading north to Danbury in Burnett County.

The Gandy Dancer Trail follows the Soo Line railroad corridor that founded and served the small towns in Polk County. In Frederic, the 1901 Soo Line Depot was refurbished and serves as a rest stop for the trail as well as the museum of the Frederic Area Historical Society. The Frederic Depot is the last remaining depot on this rail line.

One of the things that I have been working on here at AHC is addressing support for employees’ mental and emotional health during COVID-19.”

She feels the impact of COVID-19 is universal in the way that it has increased stress and anxiety at some level for everyone; for some, it has completely turned their world and schedules and all things they knew to be “certain”

upside down.

“What we know about change and stress is that it impacts our bodies and our brains in ways that we sometimes don’t recognize initially as being signals that we are experiencing increased stress. When we encounter unknown situations, our amygdala (the part of our brain responsible for perception of emotions such as anger, fear, happiness, sadness) becomes activated ultimately to protect us; we fear the unknown as part of our instinct to stay alive. But, when our amygdala is activated for such a long period of time due to an unknown situation our brain can easily become stuck in the fear – which eventually starts leading to other negative thoughts and emotions such as anger, despair, and even intense anxiety. This is NORMAL, this is a normal body/ brain response to unknown situations,” said Erickson.

She said we are all experiencing this to some degree. “The GOOD news is that we can retrain our brains to focus on positives and opportunities! This takes practice and intentional work, but there are some simple, practical ways that we can disengage our brains from the fear/negative emotion reaction and refocus,” said Erickson.

The Resilient Wisconsin Initiative lists some important, healthy ways to cope and stay connected with others including: • Get the three goods. That’s good-foryou foods, a good night’s sleep, and a good amount of exercise every day.

• Stay connected to your support system. Reach out to family and friends, colleagues, and community groups in

whatever way you can—calls, texts, video chats, and more.

• Spend time away from focusing on COVID-19. Don’t let the pandemic take over what you read, watch, or talk about. And don’t be afraid to ask friends and family to talk about something else.

• Check in with yourself. Everyone’s reaction to stress is different. Difficulty concentrating or sleeping, irritability, fatigue, and even stomachaches can be normal. Be sure to reach out to your support system if your distress begins to become unmanageable.

Erickson said, “Creating intentional focus on positive opportunities and gratitude each day is a key part of helping ourselves to remain healthy.

Wisconsin voters elect Tiffany

Tom Tiffany will serve as the next representative of Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District. He will be expected in Washington, D.C., starting next week to begin serving in Congress.

Tiffany's win over Democrat Tricia Zunker in Wisconsin's 7th District was the state's second election in five weeks.

The Wisconsin special election was one of two House races May 12, with Cali-

fornia also holding a contest.

In the City of Amery, Zunker came out ahead of Tiffany with 312 votes over Tiffany’s 271.

Tiffany is replacing Republican Sean Duffy, who retired in September. The district, which covers all or parts of 26 counties, has been vacant since Duffy's retirement.

Tiffany will serve the rest of Duffy’s term and will have to win again in November should he seek a full term of his own.

Accident at Cedar Lake Speedway takes life

A River Falls man died after an accident that took place during Cedar Lake Speedway’s bus races. Edward A. Nicholson, 62, of River Falls, a member of the safety crew, was assisting with clearing the track when one of the damaged buses rolled onto him.

According to a release from the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department, Friday, May 15, 2020, at 9:01p.m., the St. Croix County Emergency Communication Center received a 911 call, of a

subject that had been injured at Cedar Lake Speedway. Emergency personnel extracted Nicholson and lifesaving efforts were attempted. Nicholson was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Croix County Medical Examiner.

Assisting at the scene was New Richmond EMS, New Richmond Fire & Rescue, and Life Link III. This incident remains under investigation by the St. Croix County Sheriffs Office, Medical Examiner's Office and OSHA.

PORK CHOPS WITH MUSHROOM SAUCE Put into large skillet: 2 T. butter 2 # pork chops Season with salt and pepper to taste and 1/2 tsp. paprika.

Sear the pork chops until golden and cook until done, turning over once.

Remove from pan.

Put in same skillet: 2 T. butter 1 container (8 oz.) sliced fresh mushrooms Cook until extra moisture is evaporated, about 5 minutes.

Add and cook for another minute: 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp. Dijon mustard Add and stir until there are no lumps: 2 T. flour Gradually add: 2 c. beef broth, whisking to mix well Season to taste. Cook 5 minutes and then check the seasoning again and add if you want more.

Return pork chops to skillet and cook until hot and mixture is bubbling.

1/2 c. powdered sugar 1 T. lemon juice 1/2 tsp. grated lemon zest Drizzle glaze over the warm biscuits. Makes 12.

This cookie recipe is very tasty with the coconut and pecans.

COCONUT AND PECAN COOKIES Cut in half and drain on paper towel: 24 maraschino cherries Bring to a boil in medium saucepan: 1-1/3 c. brown sugar 1 c. butter (2 sticks) 1/3 c. honey Remove from heat and add and stir: 1 tsp. vanilla Combine in large bowl: 3 c. rolled oats 1 c. flaked coconut 1 c. pecan pieces 1 c. flour 1/4 tsp. cinnamon Lightly grease 48 muffin cups or use paper liners.

Divide the dough into 48 cups. Put a half of maraschino cherry on top of each one.

Bake at 450˚ for 12 minutes or until edges brown.

Let cool slightly and remove from pans. Putting them into muffin pans makes them round. If you don’t care if they are round, bake them on a cookie sheet making 48 slightly flattened mounds.

This pie will need 1 baked crust. The rest is a no-bake pie. Make it ahead because it needs refrigerator time.

CARAMEL PIE These tasty biscuits are make with baking powder.

BLUEBERRY LEMON BISCUITS Combine in large bowl: 2 c. flour 1/2 c. sugar 2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. soda 1/4 tsp. salt Combine and add to the above, mixing until just combined: 1 c. lemon yogurt 1/4 c. butter, melted 1 tsp. grated lemon zest Fold in: 1 c. fresh or frozen blueberries Grease baking sheet and drop by 1/3 cupfuls one inch apart on the baking sheet (making 12 mounds).

Bake at 400˚ for 15-18 minutes or until light brown.

Remove from oven and leave on the baking sheet.

While biscuits are baking, combine in bowl:

Combine in medium saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat: 2 c. brown sugar 1 c. water 1 T. butter Combine in bowl: 1/4 c. flour

3 egg yolks 3/4 c. milk Slowly stir flour mixture into the boiling mixture, stirring constantly 4-5 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in: 1 tsp. vanilla Let cook 5 minutes. Put into baked pie crust and garnish with 1 c. pecan halves. Let cool 30 minutes and refrigerate overnight or about 8 hours.

When serving, if you wish, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzle some caramel sauce over it. Serves 8.

This potato salad is made in your slow cooker. It’s enough for a group of up to 12. Or eat some and cool the rest in yourrefrigerator and warm up for later for another meal.

SLOW COOKER TRADITIONAL GERMAN POTATO SALAD Put into a 6-7 qt. slow cooker in order: 3 onions, thinly sliced 3 pkgs. (20 oz.) refrigerated potato wedges Whisk together in large saucepan: 1/3 c. flour 1/3 c. sugar 2 tsp. salt 1 T. dry mustard 1-1/2 tsp. celery seeds 1 tsp. pepper 2 c. water 1-1/4 c. cider vinegar Cook over medium-high heat until slightly thickened. Pour over the vegetables in slow cooker. Cover and cook on Low for 6-1/2 hours.

Sprinkle with: 3 slices cooked bacon, drained and crumbled Serve warm. Serves 10-12 Cut the recipe in half if you want a smaller amount. Hint: Serve some sliced hard cooked eggs over the top of the potato salad when serving. If you want to use sliced potatoes, use about 3-4 pounds peeled red potatoes, thinly sliced for the full recipe.

Meyer receives $50,000 Scholarship SUBMITTED

Amery High School Senior Drew Meyer learned that she has been selected as one of three in the nation to receive a $50,000 scholarship from the Burger King McLamore Foundation. Created in memory of BURGER KING® Co-founder James “Jim” W. McLamore, the BURGER KING Scholars program has awarded $35 million in scholarships to more than 33,000 high school students.

Drew is going to the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities majoring in Fisheries/ Wildlife Conservation Biology. Drew is passionate about wildlife research and was excited to find the perfect program for herself so close to home.

Drew knows the importance of agriculture in the United States. She knows it is important that we are able to feed the world but at the same time, try to do it in a sustainable manner. Drew took her two passions of agriculture and the environment and combined them into her major. Drew states “We need people that come from an agricultural background to be the leaders of a sustainable/ environmentally friendly agriculture. We need to know how agriculture works and why it is so vitally important to the economic future of our Country. That is why I chose this major. I believe I can make an impact helping to feed the world.”

Drew was an extremely active member of the Amery FFA. She was an officer 3 out of her five years of the FFA. Drew was involved in almost every event the Amery FFA participated in every year. Some of Drew’s favorite activities was the Food For America Program in which every 3rd-fifth grader came over to the high school agriculture program. The FFA members taught the young students about agriculture and where their food comes from. Each class learned a different thing. We have over 25 stations set up from horses, cows, pigs and poultry to aquaculture, floriculture and even farm equipment.

The students also received a hayride which was always the highlight of the day. Drew was also very proud of the school forest program that she participated in when she was younger. Drew states “The program was started when I was a little girl. My dad (because he was the agriculture teacher) always got us out of school to help plant the 1000 trees we planted each year. We planted over 10,000 trees. The FFA also donated the money to put a camera on the osprey nests and they donated the solar panels put on the shelter in the school forest. I can tell you that this made an important impact on me as a child and guided me to follow a path with environmental biology as the emphasis.”

Drew was also involved in many speaking contests including the Conduct of Meetings team in which they were State Champions and took a Silver at the National Competition in Indianapolis, Indiana. Drew was also selected for many leadership workshops like the Half –Time conference in Wisconsin and the Washington Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. Drew has also done well in many career development events including Veterinary Science. In fact, this year Drew was coaching the veterinary science team and will hopefully get to compete yet this summer. Drew says “Being involved in speaking contests, leadership workshops and career development events molded me into a leader that can speak in front of others and talk intelligently about a subject.”

Drew also has shown pigs, sheep and goats at the fair. Drew says “Learning to show animals at the fair has taught me some valuable skills. I have learned that animals depend on us to do a good job at taking care of them. I learned the value of caring for animals using good husbandry practices. I learned how important it is to know where our food comes from and that hard work does pay off.

Besides the FFA Drew is part of the National Honor Society, the Environmental Club, the French Club, 4-H and the Youth Apprenticeship Program. Drew also competed in many sports. Drew played girls basketball, softball and tennis. Drew was a 3-year starter in softball and a 3 year starter in Tennis. Drew made it to State in Tennis 4 times! Twice as the #1 individual and twice on the Amery Team. Drew enjoyed tennis so much that she gives back by volunteering at the Inter-City Tennis program in Minneapolis, MN. This program has over 700 youth learn about tennis from 4 years old to 18 years old. “Giving back to our communities is of highest importance. I believe that I have learned more from my volunteer work than from anything else I have ever done.”

Drew has put those thoughts into practice through her 4-H and FFA experiences from picking up trash on the sides of roads to the planting of trees, to making rain gardens in the community. Drew has done countless volunteer programs ranging from Feed our Starving Children to giving gifts to children with a program called Operation Christmas.

Drew states “I am deeply honored and humbled to receive this scholarship. A scholarship like this is life changing for our family. This scholarship will really help because I will be the 3rd one from our family going to college and we are all in college at the same time!

Thank you so much to the McLamore Foundation for this amazing honor. I also want to thank all of my teachers for pushing me and making me get out of my comfort zone. To all of my coaches for giving me a work ethic, desire to win and to value sportsmanship. I especially want to thank my parents and three sisters for always being on my side and for the love that they have shown me. I could not have done this without them.”

On Wednesday, May 13th, the Wisconsin Supreme Court overturned the state’s Safer at Home order. With this ruling, businesses can be open.

This includes people over the age of 65, people who live in nursing homes or longterm care facilities, and individuals with underlying health conditions or who are immunocompromised.

Amery Hospital & Clinic receives $1.25 million grant SUBMITTED

Amery, Wis. – The Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation awarded Amery Hospital & Clinic a 1.25 million dollar grant to help improve the safety and environment of the Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit.

The 10 bed Behavioral Health inpatient facility, located at the Amery Hospital & Clinic West Campus, opened in 2008. At the time, it provided care to only older adults struggling with suicidal thoughts, depression, personality disorders, dementia and other diagnoses. Today, the inpatient program cares for adults, starting at age 18 years from Polk, Barron, Burnett, St. Croix and Pierce counties as well as other areas of the state. Because

we expanded our care and services to younger adults, the current space does not meet the program’s needs. To ensure the safety and to enhance the well-being of patients and families, a major renovation is necessary.

The generous grant from the Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation will provide a modern, therapeutic, safe and healing environment for patients, their families and employees who provide their care. Funds will assist in the cost of building a secure outdoor patio and renovating the interior. Among the changes will be: • Creating 10 private patient rooms • Updating the dining, lounge and group therapy rooms • Adding secured windows and lighting

Amery Hospital & Clinic has been working diligently with other HealthPartners hospitals, including the St. Croix Valley hospitals, as well as other state and local entities to address the behavioral health and addiction issues that exist in area communities. This grant helps provide quality mental health care and resources for patients across Northwestern Wisconsin.

The Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation has been an invaluable supporter in the City of Amery over the years. The foundation supports higher education, youth, elderly and health.

Polk County awarded federal funds for food and shelter SUBMITTED

Polk County has been chosen to receive $29,615 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the County. The selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the US Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from the American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Jewish Federations of North America, The Salvation Army ; and United Way Worldwide.

The Local Board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.

A Local Board made up of the following organizations: Emergency Management, The Salvation Army, The American Red Cross, United Way, Local Church Organizations, St. Croix Chippewa Tribe of Wisconsin, West CAP and the County Food Pantries will determine how the funds awarded to Polk County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. The local board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program.

Under the terms of the grand from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, 2) be eligible to receive federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 5) if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board.

Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.

Polk County has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds previously with the Salvation Army, Community Referral Agency, Northwoods Homeless Shelters, Polk County Aging Program (Meals on Wheels) and Polk County Food Pantries participating.

A meeting of the local board to distribute these funds has been scheduled for May 26th, 2020 at 10:00am. Due to COVID19 and Social Distancing Guidelines, the meeting will be held via ZOOM. Since the Wisconsin Supreme Court overturned the state's stayat-home order May 13, ruling it "unlawful" and "unenforceable" just as many questions remain as when the order was first put in place.

In a radio announcement the following day Gov. Tony Evers said, “Now just because the Supreme Court says it’s okay to open, doesn’t mean the science does. Folks, deadly viruses don’t go away on their own and they don’t go away because the Supreme Court says so.”

The ruling and proceeding continued debate did not leave business owners or customers with exact answers on all protocol to be followed, which caused further frustration.

Experts say the ability to quickly identify new coronavirus cases and then quarantine those who might have been exposed will be crucial to returning to normal life.

What will be done if there is another surge still remains to be seen.

As of early Tuesday morning, Wisconsin had more than 12,543 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 453 deaths, according to the state's Department of Health Services.

ARNELL MEMORIAL HUMANE SOCIETY All over the country, from New York to Wisconsin, North Carolina to Colorado and New Mexico, animal shelters are reporting massive upswings in the numbers of animals they’ve been able to adopt out or place in foster homes. Just as in the case of Arnell Humane Society, a fair number of shelters have completely emptied their kennels.

It’s not a mystery, why this is happening. As people are practicing social distancing to curb the spread of Covid-19, many have come to the conclusion that now is the perfect time to bring a pet into their homes.

Of course, the pandemic has also brought its share of challenges to the pet-adoption world. Limited staffing, a decrease in income and the adoption process are all cramping our ability to carry on as before. The big, open house-style, animal-human meet-and-greets that are a shelter staple, simply are not possible during a viral outbreak. The bonding that takes place during those visits is essential to a connection between potential adopter and a pet.

Adoptions at Arnell are by appointment only and so that means that the “Meet and Greet” procedure begins online through adoptable pet photos and descriptions on the website.

Email conversations and Pre-Adoption Inquiries will introduce you and let us know which animal you are interested in adopting.

The adoption transaction requires appropriate social distancing and safety practices. Dogs can be introduced to adopters in an outdoor arena, allowing for the distancing needed. Adoption of a cat is an indoor affair that has inherent limitations during a pandemic. Each is possible with new limitations for the shelter and for the adopter.

Increased adoptions are not the only win for animals and the planet during Covid-19. For centuries, humans have pushed wildlife into smaller and smaller corners of the planet. But now, with city streets emptied, nature is pushing back. Humans in lockdown have watched from afar as nature has come creeping out of the shadows.

Wild boar descended onto the streets of Barcelona. Mountain goats have overtaken a town in Wales. In Israel, red foxes were seen wandering city streets; a herd of Fallow deer casually wandered and grazed in an English neighborhood.

Whales are chugging into Mediterranean shipping lanes.

water along Brazil's northeast coast, unmolested by people or pets. For all who cheer for the underdog, it is a great day for animals.

With more of us staying inside and off the roads, cities around the globe are reporting less air pollution. Washington, D.C., is experiencing its cleanest spring air in 25 years, while Los Angeles – once ranked as having the worst air quality in the country – is now boasting some of the best in the world. Delhi saw a 60 percent reduction in pollution over a three-week period while its stay-at-home order took effect.

Seoul, South Korea, saw a 54 percent decrease. Last month, in the northeast, NASA observed a 30% drop in the air pollutant nitrogen dioxide compared to the same month in previous years.

Once the restrictions are lifted and the pandemic over, the smog will undoubtedly return. But in the meantime, air quality researchers have been granted the gift of a natural experiment, one that would be impossible to replicate. State Hospitals, Emergency Physicians: “We’re Here for You” SUBMITTED

Wisconsin’s hospitals and emergency physicians are reminding the state’s citizens that they should not put off seeking important health care, as hospital emergency departments and urgent care clinics are fully staffed, safe and ready as always to help treat members of the community.

The message comes from the Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) and the Wisconsin Chapter of the Ameri-

can College of Emergency Physicians (WACEP).

“We understand how images seen from around the world and here in the U.S. about the COVID-19 pandemic can be scary and might make folks hesitate about whether to go to their hospital’s emergency department or urgent care,” WACEP President Ryan Thompson, MD, FACEP said. “We’re reminding everyone that providing emergency care is at every hospital’s core – we’re here for you when you need us.”

Chest pains, severe abdominal pain, stroke symptoms, severe headaches, persistent vomiting, injuries and trouble breathing are all among the serious conditions that could require emergency care, Dr. Thompson said.

“Hospitals and urgent care clinics are the safest, cleanest places anyone can visit,” WHA President and CEO Eric Borgerding said. “They are expert in controlling infections and in decontamination so that they can safely take care of patients who are suffering from different types of health issues. Hospitals and clinics work very hard to have the capacity and resources on hand at all times to care for patients who need a wide variety of care.”

Both also emphasized that delaying or avoiding necessary care altogether – emergency or otherwise – can lead to significant worsening of time-sensitive health problems.

“We’ve also heard that sometimes people are deciding to not go to the hospital or clinic because they don’t want to take up resources a patient with COVID-19 might need,” Dr. Thompson said. “While it’s very admirable to care for your neighbors like that, it’s very important that people know we’re very able to do both – safely – when needed.”

“It’s understandable that this unique pandemic has changed what is normal in our daily lives,” Borgerding added.

“But delaying needed care can cause more problems later. Your hospitals and clinics are there for you when you need them. If you think it’s an emergency, don’t think twice – go to the hospital. For other concerns you should contact your health provider, who wants to make sure you get the services you need.”

Deserving of a big high-five Happy Memorial Day! Even though I can’t figure out in my brain that it could be this weekend already, or for that matter, even trying to get the days of the week straight. I just can’t imagine how the people that have not been working during this time ever know what day it is. Like one of my friends said that she needs the days of the week printed on her underwear like when she was a kid…sounds like a simple solution.

Graduation season is a fun, exciting, and even a little sad time of year for seniors and their families. It’s the end of one adventure but the start of another. In this issue you will find a special Graduation section featuring Amery, Clayton and Clear Lake graduates. During everything that is happening in the country right now, the ceremonies and parties have been postponed/ rescheduled, but no matter what is going on, the graduates deserve

Without school in session made it a little bit of a challenge getting everything we needed but we did it…great job everyone!

Last week’s AHS Virtual Senior Awards Night was great. Of course it wasn’t as good as having the kids in person get their scholarships from the presenters but the Awards Night team did an outstanding job! Congratulations to those students who received scholarships and awards.

The annual Wapogasset Bible Camp Pancake Extravaganza on Memorial Day will still go on but with a little bit of a twist to it. On Monday, from 8am-noon, you can drive-through and pick up your breakfast packaged and ready to go. There will be a free-will offering. Sounds like fun and delicious!

Along with the recommended social distancing, the Amery Memorial Day service will be a condensed version this year. The honor guard will be at the Central Avenue Bridge at 10:45am on Monday to honor those lost at sea.

They will proceed to the cemetery at 11am to honor all area veterans. Thank you to everyone for your effort in making the Amery and area cemeteries look so nice.

Skill is defined as the ability to perform an action with determined results often within a given amount of time, energy, or both. According to inc.com there are seven skills that everyone should have in life.

Starting off with effective communication as it is a key factor in ultimate success. Followed by organization and management; being organized helps you get where you need to go on time and management skills help manage your time and resources better.

Negotiation; where the two sides reach an agreement somewhere in the middle of the initial proposal. Critical thinkers are great at acknowledging, analyzing and solving problems without an outside influence.

Teamwork and delegation; collaboration and delegating are key as well as knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses helps the whole team work better as a whole. Research and analysis; is a great skill to have at any time and in this age, it is at our fingertips at any given time, the key is finding trusted data.

And last but not least confidence; it can feel like a trait but it can also be practiced; the more often you do something the better you get. Some of these skills develop naturally, but it is good to practice them and keep growing as a person. Stay healthy and see you all soon!
