questions about safety and liability, Amery’s council members weren’t far behind. The proposed business would land skydivers at the airport without the need for additional land, and lease hangar space from Dave Toftness. “The actual process of skydiving is uninsurable. You have to sign a waiver,” said Van Blaricom, clarifying that the venture posed no liability to the city. According to Van Blaricom Kant plans to operate two small aircraft for jumpers. “It will add substantially to the number of air operations,” said Van Blaricom. “And I personal-
ly think it will be a fun thing to watch.” Skydive Evolution is a brand new business. But founder Nick Kant has been skydiving and instructing for 13 years. He is originally from the southeast part of the state, but has family in the area and will be relocating soon. He’s excited about the area’s scenic beauty but close proximity to the Twin Cities. “It’s a great town, I can’t wait to put a parachute over it,” he says. Kant plans to open sometime mid to late July and will initially be open Fridays through Mondays, with expansion possible

Amery city officials took a moment to address public concerns about the development of the new boat landing on North Twin Lake. Although some citizens raised concerns that the city should not have purchased the land without the proper permits in place, city officials clarified that the permit process cannot begin without ownership of the property. The city and lakes district made the purchase after being approached with the opportunity. The property exchange, which was purchased from an estate, took the better part of a year to coordinate, and the permit planning and financing phases are not expected to happen quickly either, according to city officials. Currently the city and lakes district have been working together with Cooper Engineering, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) to plan a layout
Attorney Jeffrey L. Kemp will be running for Polk County District Attorney as a Republican this fall, against incumbent Democrat, Dan Steffen. Jeff was born and raised in Elkhorn, WI. After helping with the family farm and automotive business, he returned to college to get Kemp his Bachelor of Science Degree in History. Jeff’s interest in law was sparked by a class in Native American Law. He attended Hamline University School of Law and received his Juris Doctor in 2008. He spent several years working for the Eckberg Lammers law offices out of Stillwater before starting his own criminal defense practice based in St. Croix Falls.

Kemp says he believes Polk County deserves a District Attorney who will be fair, responsible, and accountable. Kemp says he will advocate for, and defend the values of, the people of Polk County. He will bring a new vision and direction to the Polk County District Attorney’s Office with truth, honesty, and integrity. When asked about some of Polk County’s biggest challenges and how he would address them, Kemp wastes no time in identifying the elephant in the room. “Methamphetamine is a huge problem in this county. I’m hoping to work closely with law enforcement in that area, and rely more heavily on evidence-based sentencing, that is, treating each person as an individual whether they need treatment or whatever the case may be,” says Kemp.
Jeff recently married Kate Murtaugh, of Gionis & Murtaugh Law Office, LLC, whom he met while they were both attending Hamline University School of Law. Together they share a blended family of 3 preteen sons, 2 adult daughters, 2 granddaughters and a grandson on the way. Jeff and Kate reside in St Croix Falls and are proud of the community in which they live and practice law. Attorney Jeff Kemp and Friends of Jeff Kemp invite you to join them for Jeff’s campaign kickoff on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 in the French Room at the Dalles House in St. Croix Falls. There will be socializing, beverages and hor d’oeuvres from 6:30-8:30 pm during which time you will meet Jeff and his campaign staff and volunteers.
