A swift start to a long-lasting love

When running for local office, the deadline to make such decisions can be easily missed, falling shortly after the holidays. If you feel like you missed your opportunity, you actually have not. People often talk about “write-ins” for elected seats, but just how does that work? To be a registered write-in candidate for an election, all local office candidates must file a Campaign Registration Statement (form CF-1) with the City Clerk by 12:00 p.m. (noon) the Friday before the election. That means this year; Friday, April 3rd would be the day that paperwork would need to be submitted by. Paperwork can be found online at https://ethics.wi.gov/Resources/CF-1_Registration_Statement.pdf According to information from the Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB) regarding write-in candidates, the deadline to register as a write-in candidate for the school board election is also Noon on Friday, April 3rd. Only votes for registered write-in candidates will be counted by the Board of Canvassers, unless a candidate should pass away before the election, then any write-ins will be counted regardless of whether they are registered or not.

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching. It is a day traditionally filled with flowers, chocolates and cards. It is also a good opportunity to reflect on the reasons your heart originally leapt for your loved one. An Amery couple with a very untraditional love story is proof that you never do quite know when you will be hit by Cupid’s arrow. Stephanie Smith was a young lady from the Midwest, making her way through life in Pasadena, California in 2003, when a chance encounter started the first page of an endearing and fast-paced love story. She was having vehicle troubles when a security guard at her apartment’s parking garage, Zach Griffith, offered assistance. “I had a van that was one year older than me, a ‘77 Dodge, and it was pretty unreliable. Well, reliably unreliable, anyway. I had named it after my sister because neither

Community members continue to gather with library concerns BY APRIL ZIEMER EDITOR@THEAMERYFREEPRESS.COM

A week after tense discussions took place between the Finance Committee and those with library questions and concerns, city hall was full again, this time for the regular February city council meeting. It was a jam-packed room where the meeting opened with public comments. Mayor Paul Isakson asked that speakers approach the podium, state their name and keep comments under two minutes. Debbie Christopherson spoke en-

ing, “First of all, I would like to thank you for the opportunity to speak here this evening. Your service to the Amery community is very much appreciated. Public service as an elected official is a thankless line of work.” “We are all here this evening because we care about the future of the Amery public library… whatever that future may be. “The library has been a mainstay in the landscape of Amery life for decades. I like all of you have made the library a part of my children’s upbringing. SEE LIBRARY, PAGE 2
