While reading, writing and arithmetic skills are very important parts of planning a young person’s success, it is also important to parents and educators alike that somewhere along the way children have simply learned to be good people. Recent efforts of Amery High School athletes with giving hearts have proven

that something must be going right. Last week the school’s wrestling team had another successful fundraiser with their Take Down Cancer event. This week it was the boy’s basketball team that rallied the community together to join them in raising money for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

When you think about the landscape of downtown Amery, there is no doubt that the iconic Amery Classic Theater, built in 1936, stands out in many people’s minds. Although the theater has changed hands a number of times throughout its existence, a constant has been the memories made by all who have attended screenings and events. Amery is currently facing the dilemma of possibly losing the theater. In 2012, Chris and Mary Lynn Regnier, from Hugo, Minnesota purchased the theater. For two years, the Amery Arts Alliance has partnered with the THURSDAY, 33,and 2222active. owners toSEPTEMBER keep it open VOL. 131 NO. 19 their www.moraminn.com $1.00 Since involvement, the Alliance has enhanced the theater with improvements including a new sound system, an improved movie projection system and improvements to the stage. Recently, the Regniers have shared plans with the Alliance to sell the significant piece of Amery’s history. Because of the group’s passion for the theater, the Regniers have offered to sell the theater to them for $74,800.00 In addition, the theater needs a new roof; with an estimated cost of $40,000.00. Other needs include repairs to the screen curtain, a green room, electrical repairs and upgrades to marquee lighting and rewiring of the stage and auditorium lighting controls. At this point, the group is working hard to save the property. $114,800.00 needs to be raised by the end of June 2019.

Wicked weather makes for difficult week

THE SUN BY APRIL ZIEMER EDITOR@THEAMERYFREEPRESS.COM

The old United States Postal Service saying goes, “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift

completion of their appointed rounds.” Technically that motto does not include cold and it is likely the authors of that statement didn’t experience the plummeting temperatures residents faced last week.

The brutal deep freeze caused cancellation of postal workers delivering anything in parts of several states. The U.S. Postal Service released a statement Tuesday night, “That because of the predicted deteriorating weather

conditions in the Midwest, delivery will be suspended in some areas.” The villain causing the weary weather was the polar vortex. As its name suggests, the polar vortex is found around the North Pole. It is

the name given to a band of strong winds, high up in the atmosphere that keeps bitterly cold air locked around the Arctic region. At times, the vortex can become distorted and extend far further south SEE WEATHER ON PAGE 36
