High School Principal/ Interim District Administrator Shawn Doerfler discussed referendum monies spent during the regular meeting of the Amery School Board on Monday evening. He shared that expenses were broken down into four categories from the referendum that was passed in April of 2017, maintenance and security, technology, staffing and curriculum. He explained that a certain number of dollars was earmarked for each category in the annual budget, with the total being 1.9 million. This is a reoccurring referendum. Maintenance was budgeted at $700,000.00 annually. During the 2017/18 school year, $677,511.00 was spent. 2018/19 expenditures are expected to be $656,385.73. It has been said that to play the game of hockey is good, to win is better, but to love the game is best of all. Amery High School Junior Jackson Henningsgard has loved the game since he was a tiny boy and it shows on his face when he talks about the sport. Henningsgard recently scored his 100th career point in a 6-3 win over Altoona, which makes that hockey grin just a little bit bigger. As of Thursday, Henningsgard had bumped that total up to 106 points and with seven regular season games, and at least one playoff game still left in the season that number is bound to

creep up. Born into a family that was very enthusiastic about hockey, it was no surprise that Henningsgard started playing the sport at 3 years old. His father and his father’s siblings cherished their time at the rink. Now his dad who has been coaching for 26 years, instructs him from behind the boards while a large group of family, friends, and peers cheer him on during each chilly matchup. He said, “It is rare for my Grandparents to miss a game.” His many years on the ice have provided him with an abundance of amazing memories. He said, “It is cool to play for my dad, but it is just really cool too playing with my buddies. We have grown

One man’s passion for the game of hockey lives on every winter through players who also have a fondness for the sport. The Amery hockey association held a special place in the heart of John Legut, and he left a mark on the group that is celebrated yearly. According to Legut’s children Tony and Andrea, in THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER order33, to2222 fulfi ll a lifelong VOL. 131 NO. 19 www.moraminn.com dream to$1.00 live on a lake, Legut and his wife Judy along with their 2 children, moved from Fridley Minnesota to Amery. John worked for NSP, now Xcel Energy, as an electrician. Legut In 1983, Legut applied for a job transfer from Minneapolis to Amery. He received the job offer, accepted, and the family made the transition. Legut grew up in Columbia Heights Minnesota. He enjoyed playing hockey with friends as a recreation, but he never played organized hockey. One of his greatest regrets was quitting football after his 10th grade year in order to work. He would tell his kids and others to be involved in sports because you have all your life to work but you only have one opportunity to play high school sports. His son, Tony, was involved in hockey so when the hockey association was looking for volunteers to run the Zamboni, Legut volunteered. He earned the nickname “The Iceman” for the many hours he and others spent making and maintaining the ice at outdoor facility that was located near the water tower on the south side of town. Legut could be found making and maintaining the ice before work, on his lunch break or after his work day was over. If there was a snowfall, he would borrow the company truck and plow the snow off the ice. He always wanted to make sure that the ice was ready so kids could enjoy skating or playing hockey after school. He was an assis
