The Finance Committee of the City of Amery will recommend retaining the city’s current auditing firm and to solicit proposals for an administrative organizational consultant.

The committee met on Jan. 10 with Chair Rick Davis and committee members Rick VanBlaricom and Kris Vickers as well as Amery Mayor Kay Erickson in attendance.

Requests for proposals (RPFs) were solicited for the annual audit of the city’s finances. Proposals were received from Cli f ton La rson A l len, LLP (the city’s current auditor), Carlson Highland & Co., LLP, Engelson & Associates, LTD, Wipfli, LLP and Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP. Davis recused himself from the discussion and vote because he is employed by Carlson Highland & Co., LLP, one of the firms under consideration.

City Clerk Fran Duncanson told the committee that she and City Administrator Darcy Long had met with staff from CliftonLarsonAllen, LLP and their bid for the next three years was $5,000 less than the current contract rate.

Ex-Natural Resources leaders urge Walker not to split agency

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Five former Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources secretaries are urging Gov. Scott Walker and legislators to reject a proposal to divide the agency and scatter its responsibilities across state government.

Republican Rep. Adam Jarchow has proposed placing wildlife and fisheries management in a new Department of Fish and Wildlife and handing pollution control over to a new Department of Environmental Protection. The DNR’s other duties would be spread across three existing agencies: The

Department of Tourism would take over state parks. The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection would manage forestry operations. The Department of Administration would handle land acquisitions.

Jarchow has said he’s pushing for the split because businesses and outdoor lovers say the DNR isn’t working in its current form. Walker has said the plan is worth pursuing.

The former secretaries said in their Tuesday letter that a Republican Legislature created the DNR’s current structure. The issues the DNR faces require constant interaction between the agencies’ multiple bureaus and di-

viding up the tasks between agencies would hamper coordination, they said.

For example, fisheries experts need to work closely with water quality regulators and forestry managers need to work closely with wildlife experts to protect game species like deer.

People wouldn’t know which agency to contact with questions and the split would create a myriad of new oversight and supervisory positions that will require compensation, the ex-secretaries said, adding that environmental groups and outdoor clubs would have to work with five different agencies.

Jarchow and Walker’s offices didn’t immediately respond to messages.

DNR spokesman James Dick said the

agency doesn’t comment on pending legislation.

The secretaries include Democrat Tony Earl, who went on to serve as governor; George Meyer and Darrel Bazzell, who served under Republican Govs. Tommy Thompson and Scott McCallum; and Scott Hassett and Matt Frank, who served under Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle.

Bruce Braun, a former DNR deputy secretary who worked with now-deceased secretary C.D. Besadny, also signed the letter. Besadny worked under Republican Govs. Lee Dreyfus, Earl and Thompson.

Following the closed sessions, the committee voted to recommend to the full council to seek RFPs for an administrative organizational consultant.

Administrative organizational consultants use psychological principles and methodology to solve workplace-related issues and improve the quality of the workplace environment.

Details of the plan were in limbo while the purchase of the second lot remained in question. But Teigen says they’re now ready to move forward.

Kwik Trip plans to tear down the existing structure, and add a separate diesel canopy on the recently acquired east lot. The canopy will accommodate fueling for up to two trucks.

Kwik Trip will also be asking for three driveways on Snow Street and three driveways on Griffin, but none directly onto Highway 46.

als for those driveways, so the jury is still out on those,” he says, adding that he’s 95-percent confident things will go through. “These are usually the problem, and we just have to talk through them.”

It’s likely to be a few more months before the Planning Commission sees a site plan for the new store.

“We don’t make any applications until we have all of our plans drawn, and that’s usually a sixty-day process. The sale won’t be final until we get all of our approvals.”

JANUARY 28 Youth in Harmony The Youth In Harmony Festival is a one day festival for grades 6 through college. This years festival is at Amery High School on January 28th 2017.

Students will learn about close harmony and enjoy the music of some top notch teaching quartets. They will then perform a free concert at 4:30 that afternoon. The concert should last about one hour.

Registration is between 8:30 and 9am. Cost $10 per student.

Registration includes: Music, Learning Tracks (when available), Lunch, Snack, T-Shirt.

Candlelight Ski Friends of the Stower Seven Lakes State Trail will host a Candlelight ski or snowshoe event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. beginning at Soo Line Park in Amery. Luminaries will light the way to County Road C, a four mile round trip. Your nose is runnin’ And your eyes are red Your head is achin’ You’d be better in bed From the bottom of your fever To the throbbing in your toes You’ve got a cold - lyric 10cc “You’ve got a Cold” Traditionally, we wait until the desperate despair of February in our family to come down with the knock-down, drag out cold. Usually by February we have been fighting the good fight winter long enough, and Publisher against worn down to a frazzle, succumb Tom Stangl to whatever is the dominant virus of the week.

This has been true for as long as I have been married. When our children were young, they generally got sick first and we eventually followed.

I have been fortunate for several years to avoid a beating from the cold and other viral maladies that make the circuit when we are all enclosed together.

When I was in high school, I listened to obscure rock bands and found 10cc, probably most famous for their 1975 ballad “I’m Not In Love.” I found they had many catchy songs on the “Deceptive Bends” album, which was recorded after the the group had split up. “You’ve Got a Cold” is from “Deceptive Bends,” as is “The Things We Do For Love.”

I found this song rolling through my head as I would get up to take more Nyquil and got a good laugh out of the entire situation. Of course, you have to be careful laughing, it sets off a coughing spell which usually doesn’t end well. Mucinex is also a very fine invention...

I know that eventually, I will see my entire driveway and parking once again. In fact, I try to visualize the lush and humid greens of June when I am blowing snow. Sometimes, I can see it and even smell the grass. But hey, that could be the Nyquil talking.

I’ve gone through lots of Kleenex, water, cold medicine and lots of vitamin C. Co-workers that I visit with who have had the cold offer sympathy, and report they are on their third week fighting the bug, which is not terribly encouraging.

I realize that complaining about having a cold in January might be perceived by some as being whiny, and I am doing my best to carry on. We have a proud tradition in our culture of working through our illnesses, which isn’t always appreciated by anyone but the sick person.

I know that eventually I will be better and fewer trees will have to die to staunch the flow from my nose.

In time, this all will come to pass.

For my fellow walking sick, make sure you are getting as much rest as possible, drinking lots of water and check out Ayr, a saline gel that really soothes your irritated nose.

Working together to move forward September marked the second year that I have had the privilege to serve in a great leadership role for one of the best school districts in Wisconsin. I am proud to be part a tremendously dedicated staff in the School District of Amery.

I have been offered and accept the opportunity to address the community through the Local Local Voices Column in the Voices Amery Free James Kuchta Press (AFP). I will periodically Sup. of Amery contribute artiSchools cles and information about the School District of Amery. While my thoughts will be my own, I will invite teachers, administrators and staff members to contribute. Mostly, you will read about our students and their great accomplishments.

At the beginning of this school year I talked about the Vision of the School District of Amery.

This Vision has been formed by present and past generations of Board of Education members, school district staff, and members of our community. “Thank You” to the present and past leaders of the school district who have made

vital decisions including land purchases to place all of our 1,500 plus students on one campus.

As a result of our Board of Education’s sound financial decisions, we are now in a very unique position to improve programming for our students, provide additional and upgraded technology for student education, and catch up on much needed classroom and building maintenance by increasing our annual operating budget without raising the school portion of property taxes. We are in this position because the 1998 High School building remodel including the Tech. Ed. Shop will be paid in full, resulting in a decrease in our debt levy.

In December, the AFP accurately covered my presentation in December to the Amery Board of Education to consider a recurring referendum for $1.9 million recurring which will replace items cut from the school budget over the past ten years as well as allow the school district to make much needed improvements. Those cuts were necessary and none were easy to accept. Budget cuts stemmed directly from declining enrollment, reduced state aid and increasing expenses.

As a result of ten years of budget cuts, maintenance and security needs were delayed, staff positions were cut and reduced, many class offerings for students

were eliminated, and classroom budgets remained stagnant while costs increased. Still, students in the School District of Amery continue to perform at high levels.

Student achievement has always been a priority in Amery.

I am proud to say that I live in a community that values education. Amery residents understand that a successful future and a thriving community start with strong schools.

It is important for the community to gather information and facts from the school. As we move ahead with the referendum process for an April 4 vote, I ask you to rely on accurate sources of information from the school rather than the potentially misleading information from the rumor-mill or unofficial sources.

School officials and leaders have worked hard and continue to make decisions which are in the best interest of our students, our taxpayers and our community.

Board of Education meetings are held on the third Monday of every month. If you have questions or concerns, you are welcome to attend. We want everyone to be accurately informed and educated about the upcoming referendum and everything we are doing to provide the best education possible for Amery students while not raising the school portion of property taxes.

Complaint filed against former Polk County Psychiatrist Victim alleges coersed sexual contact, excorcism, and more during seven-year relationship

A man once contracted by Polk County for behavioral health needs now faces potential charges of second-degree sexual assault of a mentally compromised patient.

Kent G. Brockmann, 59 of New Richmond was contracted as a mental health practitioner by Polk County Behavioral Health from approximately January of 2010 to August of 2013.

At least a portion of that time Brockman served in the capacity of Medical Director for Polk County’s outpatient Mental Health Clinic. Brockmann was also contracted as a county psychiatrist during that time, in addition to running his own private practice in Lake Elmo, Minn.

Polk County began investigating Brockmann in July of 2013, when similar charges were filed against him in Chisago County, Minn. In both cases, the same victim alleged that sexual contact had occurred between her and Brockmann at locations in both counties.

The Wisconsin criminal complaint, filed just a few weeks ago on December 28, alleges that Brockmann had sexual

contact with a mentally compromised patient in Polk County between August and September of 2011.

Brockmann told investigators that he began seeing the patient at his private practice in Lake Elmo, Minn. Appointment notes indicate the reason for her visits included suicidal tendencies, major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and Graves disease.

When confronted, Brockmann admitted to having sexual contact with the patient in Balsam Lake and Chisago County, Minn. but reported that he had stopped seeing her because patient/doctor boundaries were getting blurred and they had feelings for one another.

The victim’s statements to investigators tell a much stranger tale.

Medical records indicate that the victim began seeing Brockmann in January of 2007 in North Branch, Minn., and continued to see him when he moved his practice to Lake Elmo, Minn., and later during his time in Balsam Lake. Brockmann’s records indicate that she remained a patient through February 10, 2011.

These entries are based on information provided in a Probable Cause Report (facts reported by the officer at time of arrest). These alleged incidents are not a reflection of the information brought forth in a formal criminal complaint or formal charge, which may be amended by the district attorney. As always, an arrested person is presumed innocent until convicted by a judge or jury.

was transported by a crisis unit to an emergency psychiatric appointment in Balsam Lake. She reported that during that session she sat on his lap and he started comforting her. Brockmann’s notes from that specific session indicated that she should be evaluated for admission to Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

The victim herself reported being ‘in a dark place’ while under Brockmann’s care. She reports that Brockmann brought her into his “church” fold, acting as both her minister and her psychiatrist. The victim says Brockmann took her to Chicago so she could be exorcised of all of her demons through the religious group.

According to the victim, Brockmann acted alone in encouraging the physical contact, which escalated over a period of time. She told investigators that she did what he wanted because she felt she owed it to him for saving her life. She reported that it was always his idea to get together and described several more sexual encounters that occurred in 2011 at parking lots in St. Croix Falls.

Brockmann was ordered to surrender his Wisconsin Medical License in September of 2013, and shortly after in

Minnesota in 2014.

The victim describes the last contact she had with Brockmann to be in the spring of 2013, when he called her while she was an inpatient at a medical facility. Brockmann reportedly told her he had put his license on the line and that she shouldn’t be seeking counseling outside of him and she should be seeking God instead.

When asked what had prompted her to come forward, the victim reported that through subsequent treatment by other therapists, she realized that Brockmann had been “grooming her and it took him seven years.” The victims told investigators that she thought everything had been her fault and that she needed to confess.

Brockmann was acquitted in Chisago County in February of 2015 on charges of fourth degree sexual conduct by a psychotherapist.

He has retained attorney Aaron Nelson for the Polk County complaint. As turnover in the Polk County District Attorney’s office takes place, a determination on formal charges has yet to be made.

Krueger back in custody on attempted homicide charges, bond revoked

Nearly a year after a late-night brawl led to an allegation of attempted homicide for Paul Krueger, he returned to jail when his bail was revoked last Tuesday.

The revocation came at the request of his father, David Krueger, who had posted the $25,000 bond last March, but asked in a Jan. 3 letter that the Krueger court return it.

“It is only after great and thorough consideration that I write to request that the bond I posted on behalf of my son, Paul Krueger, be revoked,” the letter read.

David Krueger cited several factors that had led him to make the request, including his feeling that cooperation and communication with his son had deteriorated and that Paul had had difficulty finding housing appropriate

for his young daughter because of the pending charges.

“It is my request that … Paul be remanded to Polk County,” he concluded, “as that serves the best interest for his health and safety and will help move this case forward toward resolution.”

“The letter requests that the court effectively withdraw the cash component of the bond and re-incarcerate Mr. Krueger because of concerns of the family,” explained Judge Jeffery Anderson.

When Krueger failed to appear at a Jan. 10 status conference at the courthouse, Anderson commented that those concerns “would seem to be borne out by today.”

When Paul Krueger called in to the status conference by phone, Anderson was ready to grant the request for revocation.

ing — the judge summoned him to jail straightaway.

“I have a letter from David Krueger requesting return of the bond,” Anderson said. “Based upon that, the court is revoking the bond … which means I forthwith order you to report to the Polk County Jail.”

Krueger asked Anderson to reconsider. The judge did not, instead issuing a bench warrant and warning that it would be signed if Krueger did was not at the jail by 1 p.m.

Krueger reported to the Polk County Jail that afternoon. At press time, his next court appearance had not been set.

Background A February fight between two Osceola men —fueled at least in part by alcohol — left one of them in the hospital with rumors circulating of his death.

The other, Paul Krueger, was charged with attempted homicide.

Krueger and his attorney, Kate Murtaugh, fought the allegation, saying the

evidence did not support such a serious charge. Notably, a paper towel initially reported to have been lodged in the victim’s airway was later revealed to have been taken from the cheek area of the mouth.

A four-day jury trial scheduled for January was postponed until further notice after Murtaugh withdrew as his counsel in late October, citing a breakdown in the attorney/client relationship.

Krueger was tasked with finding new counsel and was to update the court on his position at the Jan. 10 status conference. The case took a different turn after the court received David Krueger’s request to revoke his bond.

Krueger, 35, also faces charges of aggravated battery, dealing marijuana and obstruction of an officer, stemming from the incident. The charges could add up to nearly 50 years in prison if he is convicted on all counts.

100 Years Ago January 11, 1917 Christianson & Parslow – Barbers The barbering firm of Christiansen and Parslow has been in existence for more than fifteen years and the senior member of this firm, has been in the barbering business in Amery for nearly twenty years.

In August 1897, L. P. Christiansen opened a barber shop in the John Olson building now housing the post office.

For nearly a year he carried on the business alone but during the spring of 1898 sold half interest in the shop to Henry Neihles. The firm of Christiansen and Neihles continued in existence until July 1, 1901 when J. B. Parslow bought Mr. Neihles’ interest.

Christiansen and Parslow moved into their present quarters during the summer of 1905.

Three years ago the firm remodeled its quarters, putting in new fixtures and installed an electric apparatus for administering Yesterday’s massages. At the rear of the News barbershop a Diane Stangl bath room has been fitted out and baths may be had at any time.

Are Fighting Foolish Idea We congratulate the Chicago businessmen who have had the moral courage to flout the superstition, which writes down men of forty-five as old and unfit for business, and have opened their counting rooms and offices to employees gray above the ears. They have defied the universal regulators and the great god standardization, and their reward will be efficient service from those whom they have retrieved from the human scrap heap.

Of the numerous ridiculous things done by the fanatical adherents of system nothing is more preposterous than their solemn decision that forty, or forty-five, or even fifty years marks the end of an employee’s usefulness, and that a man who at any of these ages seeking work is by his lack of a job exposed as incompetent and useless. Neither experience nor observation indorses their theory.

90 Years Ago January 6, 1927 Four Young People Hurt in Crash Misses Ella Anderson and Lillian Johnson, and Gerald Morck and Louis Gross occupants of a toboggan being towed behind a car were all injured last night when the toboggan hit a sled in passing.

Louis Gross sustained some broken ribs and other bruises. Miss Anderson was badly bruised and shaken up. Miss Johnson was the least hurt of any of them, while Gerald Morek is reported to have a badly injured back.

It is not expected that there will be any permanent effects from the accident, but it is hoped that the recent accidents will be warning enough to stop the dangerous practice “of hooking” behind automobiles.

X-ray in Shoe Stores Berlin shoe stores have set up X-ray apparatus in order to assure customers a well-fitting boot. Hitherto such elaborate measures have been adopted only in the case of footsore or crippled clients, who buy shoes according to a medical prescription.

Ordinary customers are now being asked to have their feet X-rayed, so that the shoes can be adjusted to the bone formations.

75 Years Ago January 15, 1942 Saturday School Starts This Week Saturday school will begin this week for Amery grades and high school.

In a recent “Gallup Poll” taken by Principal Daryl Lien, an overwhelming number of farm parents voted for Saturday school, in order that their children might get out earlier this spring to help with the Foodfor-Defense program.

The Saturday school will be on Jan. 17 and 31, Feb. 7 and 21, March 7 and 21, April 18, and May 2. All other Saturdays will be free, however.

School will dismiss May 8 this year.

Old Books Wanted for Soldiers, Sailors Soldiers and sailors need good reading material.

Five to ten millions of donated books are needed for the men in the service. The Amery Woman’s Club library committee hopes Amery will do its share.

A box has been installed in both the Danielson and Johnson drug stores for the reception of old books. The women ask that books not be too old or worn or torn for practical use.

65 Years Ago January 17, 1952 Loot Still Being Recovered This is the saga of one, David Larson, 20, farm boy from the Dallas community, who will go down in the annuals of Polk

county criminal history for his bizarre “taking ways.”

To date, untold motors, tires, milking machines and wheels have been recovered by Undersheriff James Moore in caches spread over Polk, Barron and Washburn counties. Whether all the stolen property will be recovered remains to be seen, for the defendant, although he admits his guilt, is reluctant to give information concerning his loot.

The final chapter to this promiscuous thievery was written by local authorities who had this suspicious individual under surveillance for over a week. Deputy Sheriff Carl Burman made the arrest Friday when he was caught with a stolen tire on his car at the Carroll Murphy station in Amery.

Later investigation revealed all tires on his car to be loot.

Going from door-to-door as a salesman for a brush company, the young man favorably impressed many customers with his pleasing personality and his sales record for his product was very good. While he posed as a bonafide representative of a national company, he actually was selling under the name of another salesman and was not originally hired by the company.

While in this business of selling, he’d take each opportunity to pick up articles along the way. In Amery he took rubbers belonging to Albert Vanda and a pump motor from the John Froshaug home.

Ambitious in his evil ways, he completely dismantled a car radio from the Van Hyfte car and took two wheels and four tires off a pickup truck in a shed on the Ben Iverson farm in the town of Clayton. It was these tires he was having mounted at the time he was arrested.

Also in Clayton he picked up a chainsaw belonging to Harold Paulson and contracted for a few sawing jobs in this area, apparently intending to use the stolen saw.

A single man, he had been in this area for the past two months and during that course of time, purloined the articles.

While authorities are still uncovering places of hiding, anyone missing articles should notify Sheriff Moore to this effect.

One of the latest developments came when a complete milking machine was recovered on an abandoned farm just east of Volga. The machine had been taken out of a barn on the Ingvald Nordhagen farm near Dallas in November, while the family attended an affair in town one evening.

So far the loot has been recovered on an abandoned farm south of Barron, a woodpile south of Barron and a vacant place near Shell Lake in addition to the recovery at Volga.

Larson will be taken by Barron County authorities following his sentence in Polk County court. He is in violation of a fire-year parole on a similar charge in that county and must serve the remainder of

that sentence before beginning the Polk jail term.

Planning a venture in matrimony, Larson is presumed by authorities to have taken these articles to equip a farm he contemplated renting in Barron County.

55 Years Ago January 11, 1962 Pennington Sells Locker Plant Sam Hedge and Milton Miller are now operating the Super Lockers in Amery following purchase of this firm from Ralph Pennington effective Dec. 30.

Both employed by Armour & Co., St. Paul, for a number of years, the new owners plan to continue the operation of the firm along the same pattern as in the past with several innovations.

A market for the sale of cattle is now being offered at Super Lockers and the new firm plans to open a modern meat market in the front part of the locker building as soon as remodeling can be completed.

Miller, a former resident of the Clayton area and son of Clarence Miller, plans to continue to work for the packing firm for two or three years. He has been working for the firm for 12 years in beef sales.

Operating the new firm will be owner Hedge who is now in active charge here.

A pioneer in the locker industry, Pennington started the Amery plant back in 1938 in conjunction with his Super Ice Cream plant in the Danielson Building that burned two years ago. At that time he had 150 lockers and worked desperately to rent them. After a year he had about 75 rented. In the new plant, there are 750 lockers to serve this year.

Fishing Contest Set for North Twin Lake Final plans have been made and tickets are now on sale for the Second Annual Family Fishing contest sponsored by St. Joseph’s Catholic church on Sunday, Feb. 4, on North Twin Lake in Amery.

Several major prizes and other minor prizes in the hundreds are being offered for the contest.

Johnson Launches Amery Auto Supply Harold Johnson announced this week that his new Amery Auto Supply company is launched and in operation.

The new firm has purchased the former Amery Radio & Marine building and has completely outfitted it for stocking auto parts and accessories.

Amery Radio & TV occupies a small corner near the back door.

Specializing in wholesale distribution of auto supplies, the concern will operate trucks throughout a 30-mile radius of Amery. Wholesale supplies will be available over the counter at their city location.

Jacqueline “Jacquie” Dixson, 66, Amery, died Saturday, Jan. 14, at Hopes and Dreams Assisted Living in Boyd.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, from Redeemer Lutheran Church in Amery.

Private family burial will be at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in the spring.

Visitation will be 1 hour prior to services at the church.

Alice M. Boe Alice May (Miller) Boe, 89 passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 12th, 2017 after a brief stay at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin.

Alice grew up on a farm in Clayton, Wisconsin.

She was the sixth of seven children born to Clarence and Alice (Brandt) Miller.

She graduated from Clayton High School in 1945 and worked in the office of Doboy Industries until she married Danny Boe and moved to a ranch in Fort Benton, Montana. Her first son, Ronald was born there and they moved back to Deer Park, Wisconsin where they farmed and had four more children, John, Tom, Bruce and Bonnie.

She began a career in nursing as an assistant. She started in Nursing Homes and then worked 20 years at Lakeview Hospital in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. At retirement she was providing in-home care services.

Alice loved to laugh, often sharing jokes, was an adventurous spirit and enjoyed travel and dancing.

She is survived by her sons Ronald (Renee’) Boe of Deer Park, Wisconsin; John Boe of Seattle, Washington; Tom (Rita) Boe of Amery, Wisconsin, and Bonnie (David) Berner of Madison, Wisconsin. She was beyond thrilled and loved to tell anyone that would listen that she had 16 wonderful Grandchildren and 43 beautiful Great Grandchildren. She is further survived by extended family Cindy (Warren) Prellwitz and family, nieces and nephews, and many other loving relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Dorothy (Lester) Mattson, Beulah Dittloff, Kathleen (Fred) Wells; brothers, Merlin, Milton, and Jim Miller; son, Bruce Boe; and Great Grandson Tyler Sweeney.

Funeral Services will be held at First Lutheran Church, 240 W. Elm St. Amery, Wisconsin at 11AM on Saturday, January 21st, 2017. Visitation will be at 9AM until the time of service on Saturday. Burial will be held at the Amery Cemetery.

Louise A. Massey

Wayne R. Olson

Louise Arabella Massey, age 84 of Barron, WI, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 12, 2017. She passed away peacefully at her home in Barron.

Louise was born on November 10, 1932 to George and Lillian Loew in Winter, WI, where she grew up and attended school. She was united in marriage to Robert Massey on June 28, 1955 in Illinois. The couple made their home in Chicago where two sons were born. In 1958 they moved to the Madison area, and were blessed with another son and a daughter. The family then moved to Michigan in 1976. After Bob’s retirement, the couple started travelling and enjoyed visiting many different places. In April of 2001, they moved to Polk County and after Bob’s passing in 2002, Louise made her home in the Barron area.

Louise was a member of the First Baptist Church in Barron where she liked to be involved, and enjoyed helping others, including volunteering weekly with Ruby’s Pantry.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; one brother and three sisters.

She is survived by her three sons, Chris, Gregory and Peter; a daughter, Donna Stark; four grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a brother, James Riley. She also leaves behind a long list of friends and loved ones, and will be greatly missed. Louise had the heart of a mother, with Jesus in her eyes, and a smile that displayed the love of God. Funeral services were held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Barron with Rev. Floyd Lunde presiding. A visitation was held prior to the service at the church. Wayne Robert Olson of Prior Lake passed away on January 6, 2017 at the age of 85.

A Memorial Gathering was held on Sunday, January 15, 2017 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation; 4565 Pleasant Street SE; Prior Lake, MN. A Celebration of Life Service was held on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 11:00 AM with visitation one-hour prior and lunch immediately after at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church; 3611 North Berens Road NW; Prior Lake, MN. Pastors Laila Barr and Steve Bonesho will preside, and Wayne’s sons, David and Gregg will act as urn and flag bearers.

Military honors will be provided by the Prior Lake Honor Guard, and Wayne will be laid to rest at Spring Lake Cemetery.

On September 13, 1931 Wayne was born to parents, Robert and Hazel (Westlund) Olson. He was the eldest of three and loved growing up on his family’s dairy farm in Clayton, WI where he developed a good work ethic. As a boy, Wayne had a strong curiosity. He loved to learn and tinker with things. He especially enjoyed playing the piano and working on lawn mowers.

After graduating from Amery High School, Wayne attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison where he earned a degree in engineering. This is also where he met the love of his life, Virginia (“Ginny”) Clumpner, a fellow student at the University of Wisconsin.

Their eyes met across the dinner table at a gathering of fellow believers. After Wayne walked her home that evening, he knew that Ginny was the girl for him.

During college, Wayne enlisted in the ROTC, and after graduating from college in 1953, he served for two years with the United States Army, based in Germany much of the time, proudly serving his country. Shortly afterwards and after an honorable discharge, he and Ginny were married on October 1, 1955. They were blessed with four children and settled in St. Paul to raise their family. In 1968, they built a house on Prior Lake where they remained until 2006. Wayne spent 30+ years working for Unisys (formerly Univac). He was an electrical engineer and designed defense components and integrated circuit testing for government systems.

Wayne was also involved in developing a number of patents for Unisys.

Outside of work, Wayne enjoyed carpentry, photography and woodworking. Wayne was a wonderful pianist, playing every night at home, both classical and contemporary music. He loved singing with the Lakelanders Barbershop Chorus and the church choir, which he did until just recently. He was an active member of Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church, and also, more recently, Living Joy Lutheran Church. He

Bradley R. McConaughey Bradley R. McConaughey, 64, of Prairie Farm, died Sunday, January 8, 2017 at his home. He was born November 21, 1952 in Stillwater, MN to Robert John and Maxine Beverly (Anderson) McConaughey. Brad graduated from Hudson High School in 1971. He earned employment at Andersen Window in Bayport and retired from there in 2010. He was married in Gordon, WI on June 6, 1997 to Holly Hanson. Brad loved being outdoors; whether hunting, fishing or operating his own construction crew.

He is survived by his wife, Holly of Prairie Farm and her children: Burt Geurkink and Hailey Geurkink; son, Jesse (Megan) McConaughey and their children: Dylan and Cole and son, Jon McConaughey; his mother, Maxine McConaughey; siblings: Cindy (Ray) Wichelman, Tim (Mary Jo) McConaughey, Keith (Lori) McConaughey and Tracy (Mike) Barr and many nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A memorial gathering was held Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the Skinner Funeral Home in Turtle Lake.

Burial will be at a later date in Houlton Cemetery.

had a special place in his heart for mission work, both locally and internationally, especially Africa. Wayne collected antique tools, loved to learn and enjoyed biblical archeology and genealogy. He was active for almost 20 years in a monthly dinner group called the Collaborative Cuisine & Camaraderie (“CCC”) group, the Willing Extra Years of Zest (“WXYZ”) group from church, an electrical engineers group from Unisys, held season tickets for the Minnesota Orchestra, still attended his high school’s class reunion and had started attending his extended family’s annual reunion in Wisconsin. He made it a point to travel to every grandchild’s birthday celebration, even if it took him to the Chicago area or the Atlanta area.

After Ginny passed away in July, 2010, Wayne leaned on his wonderful family and his deep faith to help him through a difficult time. He took it upon himself to try new recipes in the kitchen, having not cooked hardly at all prior to Ginny’s passing, getting very excited when cooking was a success.

In March 2013, Wayne invited his friend and neighbor, Birgitta Greene, to accompany him to a concert at Orchestra Hall. Wayne and Birgitta quickly discovered that they had so much in common and truly enjoyed each other’s company. Their friendship grew deeper every day, and Birgitta quickly became another love in Wayne’s life. Together they enjoyed attending concerts, listening to classical music, going to the Swedish Institute, watching movies and shows on PBS, and sharing meals together. Soon Birgitta was joining Wayne at their monthly dinners with friends in the CCC group and the WXYZ group from church and attending his barbershop chorus events.

Wayne had many hobbies and interests, but Christ was first in his life, and his family was a close second.

Wayne lived humbly and set a wonderful example for his family. He was a mentor to many and treated everyone with kindness. The past few weeks, Wayne became ill, but he was able to enjoy a beautiful Christmas Eve at home with family. He had been getting physical therapy and occupational therapy at the Masonic Home in Bloomington to become strong enough to return home. While taking a short morning nap there, Wayne passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on January 6, 2017. Wayne will be remembered as a compassionate man and a devout Christian. He had a zest for learning and there was always a curious sparkle in his eye.

He will be deeply missed by his children, Chris (John) Ricketts, Gregg (Diane) Olson, David (Jody Bylund) Olson, Steve (LeAnn Penas) Olson; grandchildren, Jenna Ricketts, Grayson Ricketts, Stephanie (Alvin Stone) Olson, Brandon Olson, Katie Olson and Jacob Olson; great-grandchild, Elayna Stone; sister, Donna (Roger) Barrett; special friend and companion, Birgitta Greene.

Wayne was greeted in Heaven by his wife, Virginia Olson; parents, Robert and Hazel Olson; sister, Marilyn (Otto) Ped. Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation proudly serves the Olson family.

Wisconsin Consumers Report Auto “Warranty” Robocalls MADISON – The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has received a number of calls from consumers and at least 17 written complaints about auto warranty sales calls since December 22, 2016.

Automated phone calls (“robocalls”) about vehicle “warranties” are typically sales pitches for extended service contracts.

In fact, in 2011, the Federal Trade Commission mailed refunds of more than $3 million to nearly 5,000 consumers who were tricked by robocalls into buying extended service contacts disguised as warranties.

Amery boys find second win

Amery’s boys’ basketball team ended an eightgame losing streak on Jan. 12 when it defeated the Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks, 61-52, in Amery.

The Warriors (2-8, 2-3 MBC) not only outshot and outrebounded the Blackhawks (1-10, 0-5 MBC), but also won the assist, steal, block and turnover battles for clean sweep in the statistical categories.

Leading the way was Seth Amundsen, who shot 8-for-13 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line to finish with 25 points, including three 3-pointers. Amundsen also finished with six steals, three assists and three rebounds.

Leading the team in rebounds, with eight each, were Connor McBrayer and Lane Christensen. Zach Swenson added seven and Noah Rademaker, four.

McBrayer was also the team assist leader, with four, block leader, with five, and contributed 11 points.

Also scoring were Christensen (nine), Swenson (eight), Rademaker (five), Ryan McBrayer (two) and Dalton Gilbertson (one).

Christensen tallied two steals.

Warriors edged by Spartans

Amery’s girls basketball team met its match for the first time since Dec. 6, 2016, on Friday when it lost by eight points to Somerset, 4452. The loss marked the second time the Warriors (11-3, 5-3 MBC) have fallen to the Spartans (9-3, 6-1 MBC) this season. On Nov. 22, 2016, Somerset defeated Amery, 76-45.

“The girls fought hard till the very end with Somerset, making some clutch free throws,” said Amery Coach Gabe Brotzel. “ It was an outstanding effort by our girls against a top notch team in the state. (I’m) very proud of these kids for the way they played.”

The two Middle Border Conference powerhouses combined for 14 3-pointers -

seven for each team. Amery outrebounded Somerset, 2422, and had three more steals than the Spartans, but also committed three additional total turnovers.

Madelyn Granica scored a team-high 21 points for the Warriors, and led the team in steals with seven. She also tallied two assists and 13 rebounds.

Also scoring for Amery were Brianna Wundrow (nine), Shawna Wiese (five), Abby Schmidt (four), Cheyenne Edwards (three) and Gabby Frederick (two).

Schmidt led the team in rebounds with 14 while Fredrick added six and Dani Meyer, four.

Meyer was the team assist leader with three. A total of seven Warriors notched at least one assist.

Wiese finished with two steals.

Cumberland sinks Warriors, 61-50

The Amery boys’ basketball team dropped a 50-61 decision to Cumberland on Jan. 9 in Amery. While the Warriors sank three more field goals than their opponents, Cumberland nailed seven 3-pointers and 16-of-20 free throws to more than make up the difference.

Amery also won the rebound battle, 41-28.

Seth Amundsen was the leading scorer for the Warriors with 11 points and added teamhigh 12 rebounds, three assists and a block.

Connor McBrayer also recorded 12 rebounds and a block – and pitched in eight points and a steal.

Zach Swenson scored eight points to go with three rebounds and a steal. Lane Christenson had seven points. Ryan McBrayer contributed five points and seven rebounds.

But Somerset’s 145-pounder, Preston Anez, secured his team’s victory by defeating James Baillargeon, 10-0.

Somerset’s wrestling team handed Amery a tough 40-38 defeat on Jan. 12, in a meet the saw six consecutive matches decided by forfeit. Somerset was awarded four of those forfeits. Of the actual matches wrestled, Amery won five and lost three.

At 160 pounds, Amery’s Kody Dudgeon earned a 12-1 major decision over Garret Hecht. Canyon Schwartz followed with a 3:31 fall over Ethan Wegscheider, and Mason Goulet added a 3:35 pinning of Peter Lepper at 182 pounds.

Mike Smith also picked up a pin, disposing of Steven Moncada in 2:10. Corey Grundner provided Amery’s final match victory in the form of a 14-0 major decision over Nicholas Bushinger to give Amery a two-point advantage heading into the final match.

The Amery Warrior wrestling team traveled to Ladysmith on Saturday, Jan. 14 to compete in the 23-team Ladysmith Invitational and finished in the top half of the team standings.

Claiming an 11th-place finish with 217.5 points, the Warriors produced one varsity tournament champion and two junior varsity champions.

Mike Smith (18-0) secured the 126-pound title with four falls and one technical fall. He opened with a 31-second pinning of Chequamegon’s William Graf (5-18) and followed with a 15-second fall over Abbotsford/ Colby’s Luke Carlson (718). In the quarterfinal round, Smith disposed of

fall over Reedsville’s Josh Schuh (18-9). In the championship match,

Carl Oman (13-7) earned a third-place finish at 182 pounds, opening with a 1:25 pin against Shell Lake’s Marty Anderson (4-9). In his quarterfinal match, Oman toppled Reedsville’s Carson Schanilec (15-5) by a 3-0 decision.

After being pinned by Athens’ Marshal Westfall (27-5) in the semifinal round, Oman bounced back to take his thirdplace match with a 4-0 decision over Prescott’s Joe Schulte (18-5).

Andrew Prindle (8-13) wrapped up 12th place with a 1-3 record that day.

Claiming junior varsity titles for the Warriors were Matt Knudson (152/160 pounds) and Mason Goulet (170/182 pounds). Knutson went 3-0 with one major decision victory. Goulet was 4-0 with four pins.

Warriors finish strong in loss to New Richmond

After falling behind 0-7 just over 9 minutes into the second period, the Amery ice hockey team rallied to score three of the game’s final five goals. Although the Warriors lost the game 3-9, Amery Coach Tim Henningsgard is pleased with the team’s progress.

“I was proud of the way the boys played in the third period,” Coach Henningsgard said, referring to them outscoring the Tigers 2-1 in the period. “It was a small victory, but for us to win a period against a team like New Richmond shows our improvement.”

It took both teams a while to get rolling, but once New Richmond found a weakness, it exploited it in a hurry, scoring its first four goals in a span of just over 2 minutes of the first period.

claim their 7-0 advantage.

“Two times in the game we gave up multiple goals in very short periods of time,” Henningsgard said. “We need to do

a better job of bouncing back in these situations.”

Amery finally found its way onto the scoreboard at the 12:32 mark of the second pe-

riod when Fletcher Kjeseth scored an even strength goal off assists from Parker Griffin and Ridge Sigsworth.

New Richmond answered

with two more goals by the 1:35 mark of the third period to extend its lead to 9-1. That’s when Amery began its comeback.

Grady Martin netted Amery’s second goal at the 4:15 mark of the final period, receiving assists from Jackson Henningsgard and Ryan Van Blaricom. Just under 3 minutes later, Jackson Henningsgard recorded a power play goal off a Van Blaricom assist to wrap up the scoring.

Amery was called for four penalties, compared to two for the Tigers.

Warrior goalkeeper Ethan Mork had a busy night, collecting 37 saves while facing 46 shots on goal. New Richmond’s Jake Erickson collected eight saves and allowed one goal while his teammate Max Davis had three saves and allowed two goals.

New Richmond’s attack was led by Nick Johnson’s two goals and three assists. Noah Towberman added two goals and one assist.

Amery comes out flat against Oredockers

Amery’s boys’ hockey team slipped to 3-12 on Jan. 14 when it lost a 1-5 decision to the Ashland Oredockers in Amery.

“After three games of solid effort, we just didn’t have the jump in our legs today,” said

Amery Coach Tim Henningsgard. “Ashland was a solid team, but with consistent effort, this one would have been closer.”

While the Warriors gifted the Oredockers with 13 power play minutes, Ashland did all of its damage at even strength.

ers scored goals by the 1:05 mark of the second period to build a commanding 4-0 led.

“Giving up a goal with single digit on the clock can really ruin a period,” Coach Henningsgard said. “We then compounded our error by coming out flat to start the second. This is something our

young team will need to learn from.”

Amery’s Grady Martin responded with an even strength goal at the 1:20 mark of the second period while Ryan Van Blaricom assisted.

Ashland’s Jake Moe would not allow an Amery comeback however, as he scored his sec-

ond goal of the game, unassisted, 8:15 into the final period.

Ethan Mork saved 24 of 29 shots faced in the Amery goal while Ashland goalkeeper Brandon Hudson saved 25 of 26 shots faced.

Amery girls with eighth straight

The wins have been pouring in for the Amery girls’ basketball team as it earned its eighth consecutive victory on Jan. 10 with a 48-28 decision over Middle Border Conference foe New Richmond.

The Warriors (11-3, 5-3 MBC) topped the Tigers (3-11, 3-4 MBC) with a strong showing at the free throw line as well as a dominant rebounding effort.

Madelyn Granica led that effort, hitting all seven of her free throw attempts on her way to a 20-point, 8-rebound night. She also added a pair blocks and a pair of steals.

Overall, the Warriors tallied 26 rebounds and shot 18-for-24 from the charity stripe. New Richmond attempted just two free throws all night and fin-

ished with 17 total rebounds.

“We got off to a sluggish start in the first half,” said Amery Coach Gabe Brotzel. “(We) missed some defensive assignments and gave up three 3-point shots. We made some adjustments at half time and played with a lot more en-

ergy, only giving up nine second half points. The girls did a great job finishing off the game.”

Shawna Wiese was a defensive force, grabbing a teamhigh four steals. She also scored six points.

Other Amery scorers includ-

ed Abby Schmidt (five points), Gabby Fredrick (five points), Brianna Wundrow (three points), Cheyenne Edwards (three points), Esmee Luchtenberg (two points), Ashley VanSomeren (two points) and Dani Mayer (two points).

Aiding in the cause on the

boards were Schmidt with five rebounds, Wundrow with four, Fredrick with three, Wiese with two and Edwards with two. Luchtenburg tallied three steals while Schmidt and Wundrow each finished with two steals.

HEALTHIER ITALIAN MEAT BALLS Sauté until tender in skillet: 1/3 large onion, minced 2 - 1/2 tsp. minced garlic Combine in bowl: The sautéed mixture 6 T. grated Parmesan cheese 1/3 c. chopped flat leaf Italian parsley 1 - 1/2 T. egg substitute 1 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. pepper Add and mix well: 1-1/2 pounds lean ground beef Form into 1” meatballs. Place on baking sheet with edges and bake at 350° for 10-15 minutes or until done.

Internal temperature must be 160° or more. Serves 4-6.

Eat or put into your favorite dish calling for meatballs.

If you’ve never made monkey bread, this is an easy recipe to try.

Use refrigerated Grand biscuits or make your own baking powder biscuits.

MONKEY BREAD Grease a 12” fluted or bundt pan.

Combine in large plastic zipped bag: 1/2 c. sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon Separate and cut into pieces, the put into sugar bag: 2 cans (16.3 oz. ea.) flaky Grands refrigerated biscuits (8 biscuits each) Shake pieces to coat and then put into the prepared pan.

Sprinkle on top: 1/2 c. chopped walnuts 1/2 c. raisins any leftover sugar and cinnamon mixture Combine and pour over all: 3/4 c. melted butter 1 c. brown sugar Bake at 350° for 30-35 minutes or until golden. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then put a plate on top of pan and invert all. Let sit for just a bit and remove pan. To serve, pull apart biscuit pieces. Serve warm.

FESTIVE CRANBERRY PINEAPPLE GELATIN SALAD Drain and save juice: 1 can (20 oz.) crushed pineapple Put the juice into a large measuring cup and add enough water to the juice to measure 3 c. liquid.

Put the liquid into a saucepan or MW safe bowl.

Bring to a boil.

Add and stir until completely dissolved: 2 pkgs. (3 oz. ea.) strawberry flavored gelatin Put into a larger bowl (a clear bowl would show off the pretty mixture).

Stir in: 1 can (16 oz.) whole-berry cranberry sauce Refrigerate for 1 to 1-1/2 hours or until slightly thickened.

Stir in: The drained pineapple 1 pear, chopped 2/3 c. chopped walnuts Refrigerate until firm.

Hint: You can use cranberry gelatin also. Sugar free gelatins works fine with this recipe, Prepare the same way.

Tip: If you burn a batch of cookies, don’t toss them.

Use a grater and rub off the burned spots on the bottom. Put a bit of frosting between 2 cookies (bottoms together) making a sandwich cookie and no one will know you burned the bottom of the cookies.

This recipe makes a nice-looking coffee cake. It uses refrigerated crescent dinner rolls.

BUTTERSCOTCH PECAN COFFEE CAKE You will need 6 T. melted butter, 1 package butterscotch pudding mix and 1/2 c. chopped pecans and 2 cans refrigerated crescent dinner rolls.

Drizzle in bottom of a sprayed/greased fluted or bundt pan: 2 T. melted butter Sprinkle on top of the butter: 3 T. butterscotch instant pudding mix (from 3/4 oz. pkg.)

3 T. chopped pecans Remove from container and do not unroll the dough: 2 cans (8 oz. ea) refrigerated crescent dinner rolls Cut each roll into 8 pieces. Place 8 slices onto the pudding and nut mix, with the cut side up.

Drizzle on top: 2 T. melted butter 3 T. butterscotch instant pudding mix 2 T. nuts Repeat with the remaining crescent rolls, butter, butterscotch pudding mix and nuts.

Bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool cake in pan for 10 minutes on wire rack and then remove and put onto a plate.

While cake is cooling, combine with whisk: 2 oz. (1/4 of a package of 8 oz. cream cheese) 1 T. milk Add and combine until smooth: 1/2 c. powdered sugar Drizzle on the cooling cake.

This brown sugar cake begins with a yellow cake mix so you don’t have to make that from scratch.

BROWN SUGAR CAKE Combine until blended in bowl: 1 pkg. 2 layer size) yellow cake mix 1 pkg. (3.4 oz.) instant vanilla pudding 4 eggs 2/3 c. sour cream 2/3 c. water 1/2 c. veg. oil Add and mix well: 1 c. brown sugar 1 c. chopped pecans Pour batter into a sprayed 12 cup fluted or bundt pan. Bake at 350° for 1 hour or until done (toothpick test). Loosen cake on the sides of the pan and invert onto a wire rack. Remove the cake pan and cool completely.

Put cake onto a plate and sprinkle with powdered sugar just before serving. Hint: If you want, combine 2 T. sugar and 1/4 tsp. cinnamon and sprinkle the bottom of the pan with, and then add the batter carefully on top.

This gelatin salad is great for any meal. Make it ahead so it has time to set. It makes a nice dessert also.

How Parents Can Help Teens Be Better Drivers Learning to drive is a rite of passage for most teens.

For many families, it benefits both teens and their parents when a teen gets their license. Driving can offer adolescents more independence and gives parents a break from chauffeuring duties.

But along with the new driver’s license comes greater responsibility and risk. Some reasons why new teen drivers are at a higher risk for accidents include:

Why is teen driving risky?

•Young drivers are immature and inexperienced, often overestimating their abilities and underestimating driving hazards. For example, teens are more likely to speed and not allow enough time to stop – especially on slippery roadways or in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

•Teen drivers have the lowest rate of seatbelt use among all drivers. It’s well known that seatbelts save lives, but statistics show that 56 percent of all teens involved in fatal crashes were not wearing seatbelts.

•New drivers are more easily distracted by passengers, friends, or mobile devices than more experienced drivers.

•When teens drink and drive, they have a much higher risk of accidents than adults. Almost one-third of teen drivers killed in crashes had been drinking. This is especially the case at low and moderate blood alcohol concentrations and is thought to result from teens’ combined inexperience with both drinking and driving.

•Teens drive more at night, when the chances of a fatal accident go up due to less visibility.

•Teens are often sleep deprived. Adolescents need significantly more sleep than adults. They should get an average of nine hours of sleep each night, but more teens average around 7.4 hours. And compared to adults, teens are more likely to underestimate how tired they actually are.

•Teens need to get plenty of supervised on-the-road driving time. Supervised experience is one of the most effective tools to help your teen become a good driver.

Be sure to include opportunities to drive in a wide range of situations, like different weather conditions, at night and at high-traffic times.

•Ask your teen questions about how they would handle unexpected or problematic driving situations, and then sharing your own experience. Talk about what to do if your child makes a driving mistake or gets involved in an accident.

•Create a supportive environment where teens feel comfortable talking about their driving concerns. Let them know it’s OK not to drive in challenging situations when they don’t feel safe or prepared. Teens will be more likely to be honest with their parents when they don’t fear punishment or their parents getting upset. It is critical that parents know about an accident and use the moment as a teaching opportunity.

•Continue to reinforce rules and consequences associated with risky driving practices. For example, teens need to wear seatbelts, and avoid texting, checking messages or talking on their cell phones when driving. A contract between parents and teen drivers.

A sample contract is available from AAA. •Let your child drive the safest and largest car in the family. Newer cars are equipped with the latest safety features, but teens often drive older models because they are cheaper and parents are less concerned about scratches or damages.

Having clear rules, providing opportunities for supervised driving experience and monitoring driving behavior is the best insurance that teens will be able to develop into safe, capable and responsible drivers.

Area musicians have a variety of opportunities to rehearse and perform at UW-Barron County Three different musical ensembles will gather and rehearse during the spring semester at the University of Wisconsin-Barron County in Rice Lake giving adult, college-level and advanced high school instrumentalists and vocalists the opportunity to develop and share their talents.

The Communiversity Symphonic Band will hold its first rehearsal of the spring semester on January 23. Band members from the community and university will rehearse on Mondays from 7-9 p.m. in preparation for their spring concert scheduled for April 4.

Director Mike Joosten has a bachelor’s degree from UW-La Crosse and master’s degree from Southern Oregon University. He is the former music instructor with the Cameron School District and has been directing the Communiversity Symphonic Band since 2001.

Area vocalists are invited to join the Red Cedar Choir which will begin rehearsals on January 26. The choir will rehearse Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in preparation for their spring concert scheduled for April 18.

The Red Cedar Choir is a partnership with the UW-BC Music Department and vocalists from throughout the region. It

is open to all community members, high school age and older. An audition may be required for new members. The choir is under the direction of Beth Joosten, Assistant Director of Choral Activities at UW-Eau Claire. Joosten has been the director of the Red Cedar Choir since 2012.

Brass instrumentalists and percussionists are invited to join the Northwinds British Brass Band. Instrumentation includes cornet, French horn, flugel horn, trombone, baritone, euphonium, tuba and percussion. This ensemble will practice on Sundays from 6-8 p.m. beginning on February 5. An audition may be required for new members.

Brass band director Anastasia Traicoff is a graduate of UW-Eau Claire with degrees in instrumental and choral education; she currently teaches at Cameron Elementary and UW-BC. All music ensembles will rehearse in the music room of the Fine Arts building at UW-BC, 1800 College Dr, Rice Lake.

UW-River Falls students living and working in extreme cold of Antarctica The dream of living and working in Antarctica will soon be a reality for University of Wisconsin-River Falls physics students Dylan Frikken and Samantha Pedek.

They were scheduled to arrive at McMurdo Station on the coast of the frozen continent January 3, but experienced weather delays in New Zealand.

Participating in a National Science Foundation project that studies solar storms using detectors at McMurdo Station and the Amundsen-Scott Station at the South Pole, the students will be a part of the longest continuously running experiment in Antarctica that began in 1961.

The project studies the occasional spasms in the sun that produce a burst of high energy particles.

These extreme solar storms create continuous, invisible streams of high energy particles known as cosmic rays.

monitors can provide early alerts.

UW-River Falls Physics Professor and Department Chair Jim Madsen is leading the nearly month-long research adventure. Other team members include high school teacher Eric Thuma from Michigan, Professor Paul Evenson from the University of Delaware, and Professor Jongil Jung, Chungnam National University, South Korea. Madsen and UW-River Falls colleague and Assistant Professor Suruj Seunarine, both Antarctica veterans, feel privileged to bring students and teachers to the “ice,” the nickname for the frozen continent.

“The rush of the cold air, and the beautiful vista that appears when the plane lands on the ice and the big cargo door swings open, is something you never forget,” said Madsen. The goal of this trip is to carefully crate the two remaining sections of the McMurdo detectors in preparation for shipping. Next season they will be shipped to and installed at the Korean Antarctic base.

“It is a very rewarding experience on my part,” says Dick Herberg, of his experience volunteering with Hudson’s program.

“I think the patient gets someone to talk with, play games with and keep their mind occupied during their stay. I think the patients and the volunteers get a lot out of it.”

One of the first patients to benefit from the program at Hudson Hospital & Clinic was Becky Hansen, of Stillwater.

She was in the hospital for six weeks for a foot condition. In between visits from family and friends, said Becky, the HELP volunteers provided welcome company.

“I thought if the volunteers were willing to play Scrabble with me and take my mind off my day – that’s wonderful,” she added. “I think the healing process involves your mind and your body, and they certainly take care of you here; you heal better when you have that kind of interaction.”

Wisconsin ended 2016 with 588 traffic fatalities, which was 33 more than 2015 and 40 more than the five-year average, according to preliminary statistics from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). Traffic fatalities in 2016 were the highest since 2012 when 601 people died on Wisconsin roads.

"Low gas prices and an improving economy in 2016 likely contributed to an increase in the number of vehicles on the road and the miles they traveled.

An increase in vehicle miles traveled (VMT) can also increase the risks for crashes," says David Pabst, director of the WisDOT Bureau of Transportation Safety.

"The 2016 VMT will not be available for several more months. However, VMT in 2015 was up nearly 2.1 billion miles compared with the previous year and that was the largest statewide increase in 17 years. It seems likely that VMT in 2016 was high as well," Pabst says.

He emphasizes that about 90 percent of crashes are caused at least in part by bad decisions and dangerous habits by drivers. In addition, multiple behavioral factors may be involved in a crash.

"Speeding, impaired driving and lack of safety belt use have for many years been frequent factors in fatal crashes," Pabst says. "In recent years, there’s been an increase in distracted driving including the use of cell phones behind the wheel. The dangers of distracted driving, also known as inattentive driving, are not exaggerated. During the last five years, an average of 97 people were killed and more than 10,000 were injured annually in crashes in which at least one driver was listed as driving inattentively. Because distracted driving greatly increases the risk of causing a crash or failing to avoid one, people always need to pay attention to traffic and road conditions."

To prevent deaths and injuries in the upcoming year, WisDOT along with its traffic safety partners will intensify many safety initiatives including the following: •There were 87 law enforcement task forces throughout the state in 2016 to combat drunken driving, drugged driving and distracted driving, as well as to increase safety belt use and pedestrian safety. The task forces allow multiple law enforcement agencies to coordinate and combine their resources for high-visibility enforcement and education efforts. Federal funding administered by WisDOT covers the overtime wages for task force officers.

•More Wisconsin law enforcement officers are being trained to detect drug-impaired driving. Deaths from drug-related traffic crashes have increased approximately 200 percent over the last 10 years. Wisconsin now has more than 230 drug recognition experts, putting it in the top five per capita in the United States.

•High-visibility enforcement and education efforts, like the Click It or Ticket campaign, have increased safety belt use to more than 88 percent, which is an all-time high in Wisconsin. However, Wisconsin’s safety belt use rate still lags behind neighboring states all of which have safety belt use rates of more than 90 percent.

•To prevent speed-related crashes on major highways, the State Patrol Air Support Unit flew 61 traffic enforcement missions last year. WisDOT used Twit-

ter to advise drivers of the time and locations of many of the aerial enforcement missions to increase voluntary compliance with speed limits and other traffic laws.

•WisDOT launched online crash forms and a new crash database on Jan. 1, 2017.

The forms and database had not been updated in 20 years. They will provide critical data for improving traffic safety, such as information about crashes involving cell phone use.

•The State Patrol is using crash data to plan where and when to deploy its officers. In addition to interstate corridors, State Patrol officers are increasingly patrolling other highways with high crash rates.

•The State Patrol received a $400,000 federal grant in 2016 to bolster its efforts to prevent large-truck crashes. Using grant funds, State Patrol officers are enforcing speeding and other traffic safety laws in 28 counties where serious injury and fatal crashes involving commercial motor vehicle are highest.

•WisDOT will continue to work with motorcyclists’ groups to promote safety initiatives including the need for riders to always wear protective gear and to have a motorcycle endorsement on their license. From 2010 to 2014, approximately 68 percent of motorcyclists killed in crashes were not wearing helmets.

During the same period, about 37 percent of motorcyclists killed in crashes had not completed the safety training or skills test required to obtain a motorcycle license in Wisconsin.

•WisDOT will continue its cost-effective traffic safety engineering improvements. These improvements include installation of roundabouts, designing safer intersections, installation of centerline and shoulder rumble strips to prevent run-off the road and lane departure crashes, installation of cable barriers to stop cross median crashes, installation of high-friction surfaces, and better signage and advanced warning systems for construction work zones.

•WisDOT and its traffic safety partners will use enforcement and education to increase voluntary compliance with a recently enacted state law that prohibits handheld cell phone use in road construction work zones.

"We will focus our traffic safety education and enforcement efforts on improving the behavior and decision making of drivers and others who travel on streets, local roads and highways," Pabst said.

"In addition, engineering advancements will help make the vehicles we drive and the roads we drive on much safer for all users."

In assessing the increase in traffic fatalities, WisDOT Secretary Gottlieb said, "Preventing crashes that cause serious injuries and deaths will always be a top priority for our department. Traffic fatalities are more than just numbers and statistics. Each number was a person whose tragic death was mourned by family and friends. And we know that hundreds of traffic deaths could have been prevented if motorists had only slowed down, paid attention, driven sober and buckled up. Therefore, we remain committed to our ultimate goal of zero preventable traffic deaths in Wisconsin."

“Goin’ ta Meetin’” Music Every Sunday I heard the words to Holy, Holy, Holy at the Growing beginning of up in services Amery at Our Savior’s Loren Elkin Lutheran church located on Elm Street.

“Casting down their golden crowns, around the glassy sea.” These were saints doing this, and I could barely picture that happening, the noise, the chaos.

South Twin and North Twin I knew; Bone Lake and Wapogasset Lake I also knew, but I couldn’t imagine a sea and what was that? Anger?

Religious songs were part of growing up in Amery, and I heard them in a variety of places.

At Our Savior’s, we sang gospel standards every Sunday, songs chosen by Pastor Olaf Braaseth that set the tone for the service. “The Old Rugged Cross”, “Rock of Ages”, the rousing, call to action hymn, “Onward Christian Soldiers” were the most memorable.

Hearing them today places me back onto those hard, wooden, unpadded church pews.

Attending the Ap-

ple River Evangelical Church south of the Pink Tavern exposed me to a little livelier type of music, but many songs were the gospel standards.

Mom let me attend youth meetings and services with neighbor Willis, thinking that experiencing a different sect wouldn’t hurt me. And it certainly didn’t.

Band music from Milt Simon didn’t shy away from religious songs, though my memory can’t come up with specif-

ics. Christmas songs, both secular as well as religious, were sung and played at the Christmas concert.

The Halleluiah Chorus I heard at the Minneapolis Auditorium at age ten almost blew off my black dress socks. Thousands of audience members and the choir stood as one to celebrate the birth

of the Savior by singing that song of joy. It stays with me nearly 60 years later. My mouth and eyes wide open in wonder and awe in that hushed light arena, what an emotional memory.

Another memory comes from the Our Savior’s Christmas program, often the Sunday before Christmas. The scene is late afternoon -- dark and cold outside but dimly lit inside with candles by the aisles, evergreen aromas, and thoughts of bags of treats yet to come.

Toward the end of the program and standing near the pulpit, David Granum boldly sang “O Holy Night”, bringing tears to this normally stoic little kid.

Sorry this all might sound rambling, but I’m trying to tie in the religious music in my early years, growing up Lutheran and in Amery. And by the way, we never talked like the title about the MEETIN’ I wrote at the top of this column. That was simply my attempt to grab your attention.

One of the drawbacks of growing up Lutheran is that we didn’t hear that wonderful tribute to the mother of Jesus, “Ave Maria”. Other than that, I can’t complain.

The local treasurers and the County Clerk maintain a data base of licensed dogs. With a phone call and the license number, an owner’s name and address can be found; making it easy to find their home. And, if your dog is wearing his current 2017 license tag and comes to the Arnell shelter as a stray, the reclaim fee will be waived for the first reclaim visit of the year.

Monies collected from dog license fees create the Dog License Fund. It is from this fund that Arnell Memorial Humane Society is compensated for the service of providing safe haven and reclaim for lost dogs in Polk County. It is a fund that is collected by the towns, villages and cities, distributed by the County, but paid by dog owning citizens of Polk County. Changing Obamacare Likely To Mean Higher Costs, Less Coverage – or Both

Lori Eng, a 62-yearold office manager who works in western Nebraska, sent an email not long ago telling me she was “terrified” she might lose her Obamacare health Thinking insurance. No wonder Eng is scared. Ever since the Affordable Care Act passed almost seven years ago, opponents, mostly Republicans, have vowed to repeal the law and replace it with a different plan. The November election results now make that a possibility.

Eng didn’t have health insurance before the Affordable Care Act came along. Her four-day - a - week job did not provide it, and her salary - less than $20,000 a year - was too low for her to swing an insurance premium. She bought her first Obamacare policy from one of the insurance co-ops that operated in Iowa and Nebraska that was supposed to offer cheaper coverage. It did - until it collapsed. With her government subsidy, she was able to buy a plan for only $50. She also qualified for an

extra subsidy to help pay her deductible and coinsurance.

When the co-op failed, as most eventually did, she got a similar plan the next year from another company.

Because her subsidy had increased, she paid only $34 each month. That year Eng was diagnosed with breast cancer, and her treatment, which included chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, cost around $200,000. She paid just $1,450 out of pocket.

This year, marketplace realities hit home. Premiums and deductibles were going up a lot. She found a plan with a relatively small deductible; but still must pay 20 percent coinsurance on everything until she reaches $2,250, the policy’s out-of-pocket limit. Other plans had much higher out-of-pocket limits, a risk she couldn’t take considering her health.

“I’m hanging on by my toenails until I get Medicare if it’s still there when I’m able to get it,” Eng told me.

Because of people like Eng, it’s unlikely Congress will simply repeal the existing law without creating a new plan to help out people with Obamacare policies. What it will be is anyone’s guess. But if it follows the thinking laid out by Georgia Rep. Tom Price, the incoming Secretary of Health and Human Services, it might well mean people will pay more.

Price proposes scrapping the indi-

vidual mandate that requires nearly everyone to carry health insurance and eliminating the federal subsidies that make insurance premiums affordable for people like Eng. Instead, policyholders would be given tax credits to help buy insurance. Whether the credits would be adequate, given how high premiums are now, is an open question. More insurance policies would be offered with health savings accounts; a tax-advantaged arrangement consumers would use to pay most of their bills.

It would be combined with high-deductible insurance for catastrophic medical bills.

A new plan would continue to let people with pre-existing health conditions obtain coverage, but there might be strings attached. They might need to have been covered for a certain period, like 18 months, before obtaining new coverage. Insurers want to stop people from signing up when they get sick.

The minimum benefits now required for Obamacare policies might become a thing of the past. That means insurers could offer cheaper coverage without maternity or psychiatric care or other services that will make policies cheaper and possibly more attractive to younger people.

Older people could end up paying a lot more. Currently the law prohibits insurers from charging older policyholders more than three times what

they charge younger ones who are presumably in better health. Under a new version of Obamacare older people could pay five times more.

Keep in mind no health system is perfect. Every system has the same stresses and strains resulting from increasing drug prices, high-priced technology and physician demands for more money. How countries address those cost pressures involves trade-offs.

All countries, including ours, limit medical services, a point to remember when the spin takes over in the Obamacare war. Other countries may have a fixed number of very expensive imaging machines available in a particular hospital or community, so queues form for some kinds of treatments. In the U.S., the cost of care limits who receives it. If you can’t afford some high-priced scan or have no insurance, chances are you won’t get the service.

I’m not a betting person, but if I had to wager on an Obamacare replacement, I would bet it would almost certainly mean Eng and millions of others will assume more of the financial burden for their care.

It was my biggest fear when signing up to be a Kinship mentor. I was worried that I wouldn’t have the time to meet with my match because of my work schedule or other family commitments.

However, I have now been a mentor for over 4 years and I wouldn’t change a thing. The beauty of Kinship is that your time is flexible—your schedule is totally up to you and your mentee. My mentee and I meet weekly for an hour and a half. Time goes by quickly, but we always manage to get in good conversation, laughs, and fun activities.

Being a mentor has allowed me to develop a great relationship with my mentee. I enjoy all the time I spend with her. She is able to put a smile on

my face when I am having a stressful day and I am able to help ease her mind when things in her life aren’t going so well. We both challenge each other to be better people and I think we have both learned so much from each otherpatience, understanding, love, appreciation, and FUN! I love that I can be someone my mentee depends on, someone she can share things with, seek advice from, and always have in her corner.

It is the little things that we take for granted that mean so much to young people.

My mentee and I have done some pretty awesome things over the years. We’ve gone four wheeling, had dinner dates, went swimming, hiking, and done some crafts. She was a guest at my wedding and I was honored to have her there.

The biggest event—my mentee saved up enough money to purchase a portion of her ticket to see her favorite music group, One

Direction. We traveled to TCF Bank Stadium and danced the night away.

We sang and laughed and cried. She had never experienced anything like that- it truly was amazing. She was so thankful and appreciative. I was honored to have been able to take her.

My mentee and I end each visit with an “I love you” and a hug - means the world to me. She has been able to make an impact on me and I know I have done that same for her--- and just 4 years ago we were total strangers.

There are many kids waiting to be matched.

I encourage you to take the jump and become a mentor. I was afraid of not having enough time for my match, but once our bond started, having enough time wasn’t the question….”What should we do next?!” was the question!

Winter weather variations, Football Contest, Spring Show Winter in Wisconsin isn’t it great? Here it is mid-January, and within a few days Mother Nature gives us below zero temperatures, snow, rain, sleet, and above Pounding freezing temperatures.

The 53rd Annual St Joseph Catholic Church Ice Fishing Contest is set for Sunday, January 29. The event is held on North Twin in Amery. Fishing is from 6:30am to noon with weigh-in starting at 7am. Prizes awarded for the largest fish in each category along with a kids contest and raffle prizes. The

annual chicken dinner will be served from 11am to 2pm at St Joseph Catholic Church. Advance dinner tickets are available at the parish office.

Festival Theatre Announces Auditions for a ‘Titanic’ Youth Production Festival Theatre will hold auditions for its first Youth & Family Theatre Series production of 2017 on January 30 and 31. Children ages 5-18 are invited to audition for this original piece of children’s theatre, which will bring the epic story of the RMS Titanic’s maiden voyage to the intimacy of the Franklin Square Black Box this March.

On Thursday, January 26, Festival Theatre Co-Artistic Directors will offer an audition workshop from 6:30 to 7:30. This workshop is designed to familiarize youth and their parents or guardians with the Festival Theatre audition process and suggest techniques used in performing audition monologues in preparation for our 2017 auditions. The workshop is open to all youth who plan to audition and is strongly encouraged for first-time auditioners, as it will provide an opportunity for guidance and direction in the how-to’s of audition preparation.

“This spring production will be really unique, because we won’t be using an existing script,” said Festival Theatre Co-Artistic Director Seth Kaltwasser.

“We will be devising a completely new show together, as an artistic ensemble of youth actors and directors.

This process, which will use the larger-than-life story of the Titanic and her passengers as its inspiration, is being designed to incorporate youth actors of all ages, abilities, and experience levels. We see this as a great opportunity to start our 27th season off with something for everyone: a new artistic challenge for those youth actors who have a lot of experience, and an accessible creative process for kids stepping into the theatre for the first time.”

Actors should attend auditions with a specific idea of their availability during the rehearsal period, which will begin around February 4 and run until Opening Night on March 10.

Originally built from donations from the John Mooney family, the facility began as a Senior Center. But through difficulty in sustaining it, the city took ownership after some time and a shift towards a ‘community center’ began.

The non-profit group that remains are the tenants of the building. They pay rent to the city.

From classes and support groups, to gathering friends and fitness fanatics, they all gather here. And what keeps it all going?

Community support.

It’s been 30 years since they held their first pot luck. Now 600 members strong, the Amery Area Community Center has grown into every bit the

‘center of activity’ that its original members intended.

“Centers are run in different ways.

Our community center is an activity center,” says Fladwood.

Fladwood says the center offers more than 100 programs, for all ages, not just seniors. It’s an identity they’re trying to break away from.

Anyone 21 and up can become a member for a mere $20 per year, entitling you to discounted use of the center’s facility, and full access during business hours.

From pool tables to Wii games in the rec room, to a craft room, commercial kitchen, big screen T.V. and fitness room—it’s all here. But that’s just the beginning.

“Centers are run in different ways.

Our community center is an activity center,” adds Fladwood.

“We also house other non-profits that don’t have a place to meet.”

Drive by any given day. The parking lot is busy. Lights are on most days, and evenings too.

Fladwood says they aim to offer activities and programs that are in demand in the community. So if you have an idea, just ask.

“Even though we’ve been here for thirty years, we’re reinventing ourselves,” she says.

This January, anyone who purchases a $20 annual membership will be matched by an anonymous donor.

Fladwood hopes to find at least 50 people who’ll take advantage of the offer.

“It’s just such a huge opportunity for us, and we’ve never had a matching donor before. Being a member doesn’t

mean you have to do anything. You don’t have to volunteer or put in hours.

We have members that are in name only.”

Fladwood wants everyone to understand that the Community Center is just that, a place for the community.
