Western Wisconsin Tobacco-Free Living would like to congratulate the majority of retailers who were inspected and did not sell tobacco to minors in 2015. Unfortunately, more than eight percent of Polk County retailers checked did not pass that test. According to information provided from the Polk County Health Department, of the 57 Polk County establishments checked last year, five sold to minors. Compliance checks were also conducted in Burnett, Pierce, Rusk and St. Croix counties, and Polk County’s results were in the middle of the pack. Burnett County had 0 in 29 inspections, Pierce had 10 in 37, Rusk had 1 in 13, and St. Croix 7 sales out 76 inspections. The number of inspections conducted is a set percentage of total retailers as dictated by Wisconsin’s state-funded Tobacco Prevention and Control Program (TPCP). things in stride. “Everything becomes pretty routine. You don’t see a whole lot of stupid stuff,” he says. Does he make people in his court nervous? “Oh yes,” he admits. Wittstock was first appointed to the position by Harvey Stower in 1998. And it wasn’t until several years ago that Clear Lake was brought on. “When I was with State Patrol I learned a lot about how courts operate, and I was able to apply a lot of that to the job,” he says. “The last time I

ran for the position, I told Deb that it would be my last time, and that was four years ago.” True to his word, Wittstock did not fi le nomination papers for this spring’s election, meaning his eighteen years will come to a close on April 30. “I’m not quitting for any special reason,” he adds. “It’s just time for me to quit.” The municipal court system was designed to take a load off of the county’s
