The biggest local COUNTRY headlines of 2015 BY JESSICA DE LA CRUZ EDITOR@THEAMERYFREEPRESS.COM
With 52 weeks worth of headlines and happenings in Amery, how could we ever pick just a few? Several local athletes became state champions in their sports. Amery got its first narcotics drug dog, and will soon have an airboat for water rescue emergencies. And a new dog park will soon join the Amery landscape. All of these events and more made 2015 a great year. But these are the stories that captured our attention for weeks on end.

No chickens in Amery
BURNETT COUNTY
In a year when the avian flu put local poultry farms on edge and sent egg prices soaring, the thought of allowing live chickens into city limits had some locals excited, and made others nervous. The issue first came to the city council in 2011, with concerns over noise, smell and rodents putting the issue to rest. A new ordinance was proposed again this May, and eventually went to vote at the September city council meeting. The newly proposed ordinance would satisfy all of the 2011 concerns, addressing cleaning and proximity of coups to homes, and requiring barriers to prevent wild birds from sharing the food supply and spreading viruses. The many benefits of locally produced eggs and chickens were offered to the council, including establishing Amery a progressive community in matters of the environment. After its introduction in May, the proposed ordinance was sent to committee for discussion. Lengthy deliberation followed. But despite all the pros, city council members could not come together on the issue of allowing live poultry within city limits, ultimately voting down the measure in September by a margin of 4-2.

Fluoride Continues
Based on an initial assumption that OSHA regulations demanded separation of fluoride and chlorine before being added to the city’s water supply, and facility upgrades would be necessary, questions were asked as to whether or not fluoridation of city water should continue. Was it all worth it? Or was adding fluoride to city water an outdated, or even unnecessary practice that was costing taxpayers too much money? City officials decided early in 2015 to gather community input and put the matter on April’s ballot. “As opposed to just making the decision for everybody, we’ll let everybody in on the decision making
