Amery students will soon be able to choose from three additional course offerings in the 2016-2017 school year, according to information released at this December’s school board meeting.

Much community partnership has gone into the highly anticipated “Warrior Manufacturing,” a class that will operate as its own student-run business.

The course is being modeled after successfully run programs in other Wisconsin districts. Principal Shawn Doerfler says the program has a lot of support from the Amery Economic Development Corporation, and other local interest.

Planning is still under way to make the course as successful as possible for students and community alike.

The objectives of the course will include project management skills, an understanding of business operations, teambuilding, customer service skills, and overall career success principles.

It wasn’t long ago when Amery had its own local Hardee’s restaurant.

Its closing was just a small ripple in a wave of change throughout northern Wisconsin.

Communities everywhere watched local chain restaurants

close their doors. But as the saying goes, when one door closes, another opens.

And people will always need to eat.

When Chili and Gzime Ilazi came to Amery and bought the Hardee’s building three years ago, they were no strangers to second chances or new beginnings. The couple left Macedonia

and the war-torn Balkan Peninsula in the mid 1990s, seeking opportunities that only America could promise.

At the time, Gzime’s father and uncles owned two established restaurants in the Chicago area.

RESTAURANT: Family buying power, support are key to success FROM PAGE ONE

were brought under the family wing.

The Blue Willow in Wausau was the first of many restaurants to open in Wisconsin.

When that went well, another of Gzime’s cousins opened a Family Restaurant in Tomahawk. Then came Altoona Family Restaurant. Then Chippewa Falls. Eagle River. Rhinelander. Ladysmith.

Rice Lake. Spooner. Hayward.

Menomonie. And so on.

Each “Family Restaurant,” named for its community, was independently built and owned by a family member who needed the opportunity.

And who oversees it all?

“There is no one person, it’s just a family,” explains Chili.

“It’s family taking care of family.”

And each restaurant adopted the same successful menu, recipes, and business concepts built by Gzime’s father and uncles in Chicago.

Gzime, who grew up in the restaurant business, had always wanted a restaurant of her own. So when friend and Spooner realtor, Vic Sacco, found the Amery location, the couple made their leap.

A perfect recipe Chili maps out a complicated family tree.

“My wife and the owner of Altoona are first cousins. I went to the same school with him,” says Chili. “Chippewa Falls is the uncle of Altoona.

Ladysmith is my brother in law. Rice Lake is my father-inlaw’s first cousin. Spooner is the nephew of Chippewa Falls.

Rippon is Gzime’s brother in law,” Chili explains.

But as complex as the family tree sounds, the concept couldn’t be simpler. And like most families, they lean on each other for help.

“With staff, for example, I sent one of my cooks to Ladysmith when they needed it,” explains Chili. “And when I first opened I had five wait-

Whatever needs to be done,” Chili says. “I love being with the customers.”

Most of the Family Restaurant locations were once restaurant franchises. And that’s a key part of making their growth repeatable.

“Some of the restaurants are easy to convert. Some need additions or more work,” he says.

“Eagle River is an old Burger King. Rice Lake was a Country Kitchen. Rhinelander was a Wendy’s,” he continues.

Chili says the Family-Restaurant model is in more than 20 Wisconsin communities, including Mondovi, Osseo, Park Falls, River Falls, Arcadia, Rippon, Schofield, Tri-City, and Winona, Minn.

Although independent, they still keep each other in check.

“If I have a customer coming

from Eagle River and they see there is a family restaurant in town, they know the food and they know the service,” he says. If something isn’t right, somebody will hear about it.

The family will get together and talk about things when there are problems, but nothing regularly.

“If someone wants to start a new restaurant, they have to do a good job or they let everyone down.”

Their individual success relies on the business model created by the family patriarchs.

“When we decided to open Amery, I went and talked to my father-in-law, because he was the brain of the restaurant business,” Chili says.

Chili’s father-in-law, Mike Shabani, is the current owner of Ladysmith Family Restaurant.

“I asked him what it takes.

He told me the main thing is to have a nice, clean place, number one. Second is you’ve got to be nice to the customers.

You’ve got to be there to greet them. Third is the plate. Good quality food, nice and warm.”

Shabani told Chili that location mattered too. And it might take time, but he promised that if he got the rest right, people would find him.

Another key ingredient?

Buying power.

“A lot of customers ask how we can afford our low prices,” says Chili. “The deals that we get, we get as a group,” he says.

And that included a line of credit to get his business started.

“When I started in Amery and went to the restaurant-supply companies, they didn’t ask me for a personal guarantee or anything, because I had all my family members backing me.”

Visitors to the Amery Family Restaurant will see Chili and Gzime working alongside their employees almost every day. It’s part of Shabani’s recipe.

“I don’t care much about what I eat at a restaurant.

I care about how the place makes me feel,” says Chili. “I love being with the customers.” He often grabs a coffee pot or water pitcher and works the room. “Sometimes my employees get mad at me, but I’m not going to go walking around empty handed,” he smiles.

Paying it forward Things have come full circle for Chili and Gzime, whose two children are now preparing to make lives of their own.

Most, if not all of the family restaurants (including Amery) served free meals or donated food for the Thanksgiving holiday.

“When I came to the United States, I had somebody helping me. Somebody gave me a hand so I could get back on my feet. The pilgrims came here and traded food. They gave to someone in need, just like someone gave to me.” And the rest of his family sees it that way too.

Chili remembers his humble beginnings very clearly, and won’t ever forget the war he left behind. Bosnia. Croatia.

Kosovo. The “ethnic cleansing” that took place in Bosnia in the early 1990s had been the most widespread genocide since WWII. “Innocent people were dying and nobody really cared about it,” he says. “The United States was the one that came forward and said, ‘Enough is enough.’”

It’s the reason Chili and Gzime recently made a large donation to local veterans organizations.

“It’s not about giving. We wanted to say thank you. We have soldiers that went to war and lost a lot. People need to let them know that what they did was right,” Chili says.

“Thank God, I’ve had the opportunity to give something back.”

Although Bones is a city employee, the venture was a personal one. The neighboring church had given the home to him, provided he could relocate it himself. Bones incurred 100% of the cost of the project, paying for a city permit to offset police

costs, and paying Xcel and We Energies for their involvement.

The move had been planned for earlier in December, but was postponed because of the rain.

Once started, the move took approximately three hours, with precipitation making things more complicated.

Will we ‘feel the Bern’ in 2016?

I hope you had a Merry Christmas and got to spend time with friends and family. I always find seeing people is the best part of the holiday. Presents are nice, but the memories will last long after the things are lost, broken or forgotten.

So here we are at the end of another year.

Time to reflect on what has happened and look forward to the coming year.

I am not a good prognosticator, but I have a few thoughts as the old year fades into the sunset.

It is wonderful to see gasoPublisher line prices drop below $2.00 a Tom Stangl gallon. I believe there are many factors that have brought this boon to consumers, some that have less than philanthropic intentions. I think there is a global game underway, with some of the oil producing nations seeking to lowball prices to drive others out of business.

This is great for the consumer for once, but I think we will end up paying more in the near future. So enjoy the savings while you can.

Next year, we will elect a president. The political theatre that has been underway for the past six months has been entertaining and more than a bit alarming.

It seems that with each passing election, the nation moves closer and closer to installing a dictator. Congress and the president fight, nothing gets done. We have a candidate in Donald Trump who is used to simply making decisions and moving forward. His rhetoric is striking a chord with the people who are frustrated with nothing getting done.

Hillary Clinton is acting a lot like she did eight years ago, when pundits called her election “inevitable.”

We all know how well that worked out.

I ran across a news item last month about mock elections that are held at Western Illinois University that may prove to be a bellwether and a shocker.

WIU has successfully predicted the winner of the presidential elections since 1975, and eight years ago they predicted the rise of our current president.

Their mock election has the Democratic ticket of Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley defeating the Republican ticket of Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio.

The mock election, in which thousands of students from multiple schools form parties and caucuses and play out a small-scale election over the course of several days, has Bernie Sanders beating Hillary Clinton in 22 out of 26 primary states; Hillary Clinton survives past Super Tuesday, but loses out before the month of March is concluded.

As Sanders’ running mate, the school picked Martin O’Malley, though WIU hasn’t had a perfect record with vice presidential candidates, nor with losing tickets; in 2007, they had a Barack Obama/ John Edwards, while saying the GOP ticket would be Giuliani/ McCain. The school made up for that however in 2011, when they (somehow) accurately predicted the losing Mitt Romney/ Paul Ryan ticket. Nobody saw that coming, but somehow, WIU’s students did.

Emailing for dollars

Gov. Scott Walker got “Trumped” in Iowa this summer as he sought the Republican presidential nomination. But his efforts may yet play a role in Iowa politics.

The governor seemed to have done everything politically correct. Walker had developed detailed position papers on sevCapitol issues. His Newsletter eral campaign hired Matt staffers to idenPommer tify Republicans who would support him at the Iowa nominating caucuses. By early summer the work was paying off; he was high in some public opinion polls.

His Iowa work and efforts from his three gubernatorial elections had provided an email list of about 675,000 names of likely supporters and donors. Then Donald Trump seized the national Republican stage, and all of Walker’s strategy was washed away. Support and donations to Walker’s campaign dried up. In mid-September Walker dropped out of the presidential campaign.

Other Republican candidates are interested in such readymade email lists because they provide an opportunity to quickly find new supporters and donations, experts told the Politico online news organization. Walker’s organization offered the list for $10,500, Politico said.

But the posted price probably doesn’t mean much because revenue sharing between the “dropped-out” candidate and the “continuing” candidate often happens, Politico explained.

While politicians are well-aware

of the arrangement, the general public is mostly unaware that owners of political email lists and those who would “rent” them often share in the receipts. Some of the money collected through appeals also goes to the consultants who manage the lists. But citizens who respond to email pleas for campaign cash probably never learn about the split between politicians or how much is going to the consultants.

In mid-December, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who also is running for the GOP presidential

nomination, began encouraging donations via the Walker email list to help pay off the governor’s campaign debt. Cruz would benefit if he could attract early Walker backers – and if a Walker-Cruz revenue share was part of the deal. Walker has said Cruz was the only former opponent sending out such emails.

Kurt Luidhardt, who operates the Mustard Seed Media list rental business, said revenue sharing is “the most common pricing model” in the current political marketplace. His firm has been used by Cruz and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. “On the presidential level, I would say (the revenue share split is) probably 75, 80 percent – maybe,” Luidhardt told Politico.

The starting point for revenue sharing agreements is 50-50 but more popular candidates like Cruz usually get a better split because they are likely to lure more donors than lesser-known candidates. Experts said revenue sharing is far more common among Republicans than among Democrats.

Part of Walker’s campaign debts include reimbursing the state of Wisconsin for things like security when he was campaigning around the country. The governor has already paid the state more than $67,000 on that debt.

Mark Stephenson, who was the top data officer in Walker’s campaign, said the basic rule in building donor and supporter email lists is the size. “The bigger the list you have, the better off you are in the end.” He said the average donor will give nearly $70 during the course of a campaign.

Unsupervised toddler leads to couple’s arrest As Amery authorities conducted a welfare check on an unsupervised toddler, they found the parents to be home, but less-than attentive.

According to reports, Amery Police were contacted by the Family Resource Center Ganley about an unsupervised toddler observed in the first floor living room at the home of Cody J. Utgard and Allison M. Ganley, both 21 of Amery.

As police entered the home, they found Ganley in the living room

holding her son. According to reports, the home smelled of burnt marijuana, which Ganley admitted to smoking upstairs just prior to their arrival.

Ganley insisted that drug use took place away from the child, in the upstairs of the Utgard home, and that the child does not go upstairs. Utgard, the child’s father, was then called downstairs.

At the time of the home visit, Ganley was on probation for selling marijuana, while Utgard had a valid warrant for his arrest.

Both Ganley and Utgard readily admitted to smoking the marijuana, consented to a search of the residence, and even showed the officer a pipe and marijuana that were hidden under a mattress.

The couple was placed under arrest and transported to the Polk County Jail.

Both Ganley and Utgard have been formally charged with Possession of THC (2nd offense) and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Their initial appearances will be January 11 in Polk County Circuit Court.

During the course of the search warrant several thousand dollars in stolen items from Barron County were recovered.

Some of the items recovered were a zero-turn lawn mower, flat bed trailer, pressure washer, arc welder, three push lawn mowers

and several other smaller items.

Also during the search warrant almost a pound of meth was found and is being handled by the Wright Co Sheriff’s Department.

This case remains active and under investigation by the Barron County Sheriff’s Department.

Woman hides in bathroom to avoid 4th OWI Emergency or not, it’s clear that a Milltown woman was in a very big hurry December 14, eventually locking herself behind her bathroom door.

According to reports, Milltown police attempted stop Nicole. R. Pike, 40 of Milltown, after squealing her tires, crossing the centerline, and speeding toward her home.

Once stopped at her home, Pike got out of her car despite being told to remain in it.

She walked inside past her husband, who was standing at the Pike door.

The husband refused to let the officer inside the home, until threatened with a Taser.

Officers found drugs and drug paraphernalia in the home, and also found Pike holed up in her bathroom.

She was taken outside and asked to participate in field sobriety tests, quickly admitting “I’m drunk,” and “I’m done.” In custody, Pike submitted a breath sample at .21.

Pike has been charged with OWI 4th, Operating with Prohibited Alchohol Content (4th), Resisting/Failing to Stop/Fleeing, and Resisting or Obstructing and Officer. Her initial appearance is scheduled for January 11 in Polk County Circuit Court.

Stolen Barron County property recovered in Minnesota On Wednesday, December 16, 2015, the Barron County Sheriff’s Department with the assistance of the Wright County, Minn. Sheriff’s Department served a search warrant on a home in Clearwater, Minn. owned by Blaine Skadsberg, formerly from Rice Lake.

Mystery crash causes power outage and spills dinner An Osceola woman was arrested when the details of her auto accident didn’t quite add up on December 19.

Officers responded to a witness’s report of a pickup truck that had left the road and struck a power pole on 20th Avenue in Polk County. The caller said that he had spoken to a male driver at the window of the vehicle, who admitted to texting while driving.

According to reports, upon arrival officers found no sign of the reported male driver. Instead, offiCottor cers spoke with Donna M. Cottor, 62 of Osceola, who told officers she had been driving and swerved to miss “a coyote or something.”

Cottor had no idea why someone would have reported a male driver at the scene. And when asked why the driver’s seat was adjusted for someone much larger than her 5’1” stature, she explained that she had pushed it back to leave the vehicle.

When it came to a takeout container that had spilled on the front seat, however, Cottor did remember the man. She was certain the food belonged to him.

Cottor was warned several times about providing false information. When told about the witness’s statement she said, “I have nothing further to say.”

Cottor was arrested for obstructing an officer, and is awaiting formal charges.

Amery On The Apple Amery, Polk County, Wisconsin, is situated on the Apple River, and on the great Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie Railway, sixty-three miles east from Minneapolis, and is surrounded by a fertile farming country, peopled with wellto-do, intelligent, and go-ahead farmers.

Thus situated, in the midst of these natural advantages, Amery has the best location for a good sized city of any town in this section of the country, and backed up by a little push in that direction, she is bound to take the lead in the future.

The average Amery citizen does not have to be told that Amery is to be the manufacturing city of this section. Its natural advantages tell that fact to any thinking man. To bring about this result, every energy should be turned to the object of building up of, and encouraging manufacturing industries to locate here. In these times when so many establishments are changing locations, it would not be a very great surprise if some one or two of these located in Amery.

The climate in this locality is excellent, the water is good, fish and game are plentiful. Amery is but two years old, real estate is cheap, its prospects unsurpassed, and if you are looking for a location or chance for investment, look it over.

Amery has a population of 500, and is composed of a church in the course of erection, school house, grain elevator, three first class hotels, four boarding houses, one restaurant, three general stores, post office, hardware store, two furniture stores, two meat markets, two blacksmith shops, one wagon shop, three barber shops, one bottling factory, photograph gallery, one physician, one attorney at law, one brickyard, six saloons, one temperance billiard saloon, stave mill, three saw mills, four lumber yards, planning mills, three millinery stores, two dressmaking establishments, carpenter shop, two dressmaking establishments, carpenter shop, two shoemaker shops, harness shop, two livery and sale stables, and one newspaper.

What Amery Wants A bank.

A creamery.

A tailor shop.

A jewelry store.

A reading room.

A flouring mill.

A starch factory.

More sidewalks.

A first-class drug store.

A sash and door company.

A hub and spoke factory.

A population of 1,500 in 1890.

A spirit of “up and doing” in every business.

More permanent factories that will employ a number of operatives.

While re-installing a storm window he had taken down recently, LeRoy fell when the ladder he was standing on slipped on the icy sidewalk. LeRoy crashed into an awning which ripped from its anchoring, braking his fall. The awning and LeRoy continued the drop to the sidewalk.

100 Years Ago December 30, 1915 Too Much Economy

Local Man, 24, Dies in Crash

“This thrift movement which is agitating the public mind at this time is a good thing, I suppose,” said a friend the other day during a discussion of health matters, “but it has its limits. I’ve watched thrifty and unthrifty people a whole lot, because I’ve lived my whole life among people who haven’t earned much money nor had a great deal of it to spend.

“My old dad would be called by most people a thriftless man and I’ve always blessed him and loved him for it.”

“Dad had to provide for a family of nine of us and we’re all alive and in good health today.

My brothers and I went about with holes through the soles of our shoes and with holes in the seats of our trousers, but we never went to school or to bed without the good comfortable feeling of a stomach full of plain wholesome food. And that’s the thing that counts in the health and wealth of a growing boy.”

“I know of Yesterday’s plenty of families in this News town who Diane Stangl own and have partly paid for small homes, or who have small ‘rainy day’ and old age savings accounts which have been saved out of daily wages none too large to provide for the necessities of life and health.”

“How do they do it?’ By skinning down on the very food they and the babies need. Why, you’ve no idea how many of the children of such families go to school with a little rye bread and coffee - come home at noon to a dinner of rye bread, cold coffee and possibly a little cheap sausage – and go to bed on a supper of more rye bread and more coffee. Milk? I should say not! Coffee is cheaper. A whole family can be furnished coffee for less than it would cost to furnish a single child with milk.

“If you could teach these people who know how to save too well, how to spend their money wisely and how to secure full value for what they do spend, you would succeed in preventing an enormous number of deaths.”

Marvin Neurer, 24, Amery, died instantly when his car left the road about 9:30 p.m., Monday evening, as he travelled to Minneapolis after spending the holidays at his home here.

Son of Mrs. Georgia Neurer and a star AHS athlete during his high school days, he was enrolled in a telegraphers’ school in Minneapolis.

There were no witnesses to the mishap which occurred a short ways west of New Richmond on highway “64.” The car he was driving left the road, throwing him clear but injuring him fatally. His body was some 75 or more feet from the car he was driving.

A graduate in the class of ’50, Marvin attended River Falls College where he made the college varsity squad. He later enlisted in the Navy and served a two-year hitch with the Atlantic Fleet.

90 Years Ago December 31, 1925 Deer Park Boy Hurt in Wood Saw While operating a wood-sawing machine at the home of his father, Issa Hanson near Deer Park, Saturday, Alfred Hanson got his right hand caught, severely lacerating the back.

J. P. Johnson Gift Shop Back in December of 1974 this photo ran in an ad for the J. P. Johnson Gift Shop, which featured unusual items from Scandinavian countries such as Norwegian silver, hand-blown crystal from Sweden, Germany and Israel, stainless steel from Denmark and wooden hand-carved gifts from Italy.

The ad stated, “Everything and everyone has a name, but it takes time and dedication to build a reputation. Try putting your faith in a name and a reputation and shop J. P. Johnson.”

He was brought to this city for medical attention. He is in the Polk County hospital at present.

Light Bulb Barometer Firemen of Fostoria, Ohio, are trying out a new weather prophet. A large electric light bulb is held under water while the tip at the end is pinched off.

The vacuum in the bulb draws in the water, if stormy weather is on its way. If it does not drip, fair weather can be counted upon, the firemen have been told.

85 Years Ago January 1, 1931 S.E. Peterson Injured, Now Out of Danger S. E. Peterson was seriously injured last Saturday when thrown from a sled at his home in south Amery. Mr. Peterson who has charge of the merchants delivery, was on his way down town and in turning out of his yard was thrown violently from the sled striking his head against a rock. He sustained a fractured skull and a badly lacerated scalp, but is now much improved and considered out of danger.

70 Years Ago December 27, 1945 Whooping cough is one of the most important causes of death in small children. Unfortunately, many parents have not realized the importance of giving children the protection of whooping cough immunization at the time they most need it – during the first year.

In 1943, there were 47 deaths from whooping cough in Wisconsin and 32 of those who died were infants under one year of age. Most of the others were children younger than three

years.

So although the incidence of whooping cough is greatest in the early school years, it is in the infant and preschool child that the danger is greatest. A sound program of whooping cough prevention would immunize every child before they reached their first birthday.

50 Years Ago December 28, 1950 Boxing Cropped Here Athletic director, LeRoy Leadholm of the local schools announced this week that boxing has been dropped from the local athletic program. Difficulty in filling schedules was one of the paramount contributing factors in the elimination of the sport.

60 Years Ago December 29, 1955 Expanding Population Keynotes Prosperity Start with births this past year. The baby boom is continuing. It stays a high plateau of the past nine years and promises to run on and on. Birth rate hovers around 25 new babies per year for each 1,000 population. Down a bit from the peak of 26.6 in 1947, when men came home from war. Still, numbers this year were a record high… plus – 4 million new babies.

Reasons for the high births - people doing well, can afford babies so they have bigger families. Young mothers are having more seconds, thirds, fourths, and even fifths.

Fortunately LeRoy Berenschot escaped with only bruised and scratched legs Wednesday afternoon in a fall from a second story window at his home in Amery.

50 Years Ago December 30, 1965 Community Club Plans “Burning of Greens” Area residents are being asked to save their greens and Christmas trees for the traditional “burning of the greens” planned for next weekend.

City crew members will pick up the greens and trees from the curbs one day next week with the materials being used for a bonfire at the skating rink site at South Twin Lake.

Refreshments are planned for all those who will attend.

Firm Opens Branch for Special Instruments Fabri-Tek, Incorporated, a leading core memory manufacturer, has announced the formation of an Instruments Division, located in Madison, Wisconsin The new division will design and manufacture special-purpose equipment for use in the bio-medical, nuclear and associated fields. The first product, to be offered within the next few weeks is a signal average, designed for use in biomedical research.

“This is the first of an extensive line of sophisticated and semi-sophisticated instruments to be produced by this division,” said M. F. Mickelson, company president.

The entry into the instruments field marks the second diversification for Fabri-Tek in the past year, the first being the introduction of a computer science training system, which was offered to the education market early in 1965.

COURSES: Beginners home and automotive maintenance among new class offerings FROM PAGE ONE

will learn previously used skills from Construction and Welding I courses to manufacture and distribute a product from start to finish. Classwork covers everything from quoting and ordering materials, to quality, shipping, invoicing, and payroll. The class will help generate funds for the Tech Ed program, and pay a percentage of the profits directly to students for their hard work.

Other course offerings include “Beginners Home and Automotive Maintenance,” also taught by Mr. Lee. The goal of the course is to teach students how to fi x and diagnose common problems that occur with home and automobile ownership.

Topics range from basic plumbing, electrical, and construction concepts to changing a tire, oil and headlight.

“Technical College Mathematics” will also be available for those pursuing a local two-year degree. The nine-week course can be taken for free anytime in grades 9-12 and apply toward math requirements at WITC. Students may begin registering for the new courses this spring.

Amery School Board Highlights Two new energy-efficient vehicles were purchased by the school district this November, an electric/ gas hybrid Chevy Volt, and a new LP-powered BlueBird schoolbus. The district evoked Act 32’s revenue limit exemption for purchases that would result in energy savings to the district. The new bus is recognizable as the only bus in the fleet with a “nose,” and will realize a 40% reduction in fuel costs vs. gas or diesel. A new fueling station will be added in the future. Superintendent Kuchta says legislation has been proposed to eliminate the Act 32 option for district improvements.

In personnel action, the board approved resignations from eight staff members this December; Nutrition Server Jean Hiltner, Paraeducator Karen Foust, JV Volleyball Coach Tara Rose, JV/C Football Coach Bryan Melberg, JV Softball Coach Dayna Prindle, MS Volleyball Coach Wendy Twedt-Maxon, Nutrition Director April Hershfield-Johnson, and Clubhouse Assistant Katherine Gaetz.

The district approved hiring contract for four positions; MS Volunteer Wrestling Coach Mark Oman, MS Paraeducator Dawn Bembenek, IS Office/Nurse/Lunch Paraeducator Heidi Hoffman, and Homebound Instructor Patricia Waterman.

Montessori and Project Based Learning options will be available for elementary and intermediate families beginning next year. Those interested in learning more about these options should attend an informational meeting at the Intermediate School on Thursday, January 21 at 6:30 p.m.

Nomination papers for school board candidates will continue to be accepted until January 5. Two at-large positions will be on this April’s ballot, the winners of which will begin a three-year term.

Incumbents are Chelsea Whitley and Dale Johnson.

The board voted to authorize a preliminary use of Procurement Cards (P-cards), which operate like a credit card when purchase orders cannot be used, but do not charge interest and also offer a percentage rebate for purchases made.

Three new classes will be available to high school students starting in 2016-2017; “Beginning Home and Auto Maintenance” from the Tech Ed department, a WITC accredited “Technical College Mathematics,” and the student-run business “Warrior Manufacturing.”

The Band Boosters shared details of their band-trip destination with board members and will make a formal announcement to students this January. The trip is offered to freshman-senior band students once every four years. The student portion of the upcoming trip is expected to be $700 per student, with the remaining portion paid for by fundraising. Participation is expected to be roughly 107 students and 15 adults.

Sheriff’s Association holds most successful fundraiser to date Now in it’s fi fth year, the 2015 Polk County Sheriff’s Association collected the most funds ever during their annual banquet held December 5th at Trollhaugen.

Attendees enjoyed food and entertainment, as well as a chance to win silent auction and raffle items.

Countywide law enforcement and other local officials were in attendance for the evening event. This year’s gathering broke records for both funds and donated toys, with $6,200 and eight bins of toys collected for Polk County children and families in need.

The fundraising dinner has

collected more than $20,000 in its five-year history.

The Polk County Deputy Sheriff’s Association would like to thank all those who attended or donated to help make this year’s fundraiser a success.

Accident shuts down US 63 for two hours On Wednesday December 23, 2015 at 4:27pm, the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office was dispatch to a semi vs. car crash on USH 63 approximately 500 feet north of CTH E in the town of Hammond.

A 2001 Buick Century driven by Benjamin LaMonte Johnson, age 19 of Minneapolis, MN was northbound on USH 63. A 2015 Peterbilt semi driven by Waylon Lee Stoltz, age 30 of Ham Lake, MN was southbound on USH 63. Witnesses state the car lost control on the roadway and crossed the center line striking the driver side of the semi.

The car then spun and the backend of the car was struck by the semi-trailer.

The car came to rest in the east ditch and the semi-trailer came to rest on the roadway blocking both lanes of traffic.

Johnson was transported by Baldwin EMS to Baldwin Hospital and

then to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN with injuries. A passenger in the Johnson car, Allison Maria Wesener, age 18 of Edgar, WI was taken to Baldwin Hospital with injuries. Stoltz was not injured.

The drivers and occupant were all wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Weather conditions were a factor in the crash as the road was snow covered and it was snowing at the time.

The trailer was a tanker trailer used to haul gasoline however, it was empty at the time of crash. USH 63 was shut down for approximately two hours while deputies investigated the crash.

Assisting at the scene was the Wisconsin State Patrol, Untied Fire & Rescue, and Baldwin EMS. The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.

HealthPartners program will increase physicians in rural northwest Wisconsin A new family medicine residency program in the St. Croix Valley is designed to increase the number of physicians who practice in rural and underserved areas of Wisconsin.

The program, called the Methodist Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program Rural Training Track, is administered by HealthPartners Institute for Education and Research, and is expected to add an additional physician to a northwestern Wisconsin region every year beginning in 2021. *The program will begin in 2018 with the training of one resident.

During the first year of the three year residency program, residents will train at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minn. During the second and third year of the program, the resident will train at Amery Hospital & Clinic and Westfields Hospital & Clinic in New Richmond. During the program, all residents will have a rotation at Hudson Hospital & Clinic.

A 2011 report from the Wisconsin Hospital Association estimated that the state will need to train or recruit

an additional 100 physicians a year through 2030 to meet projected demand for health care.

Adding support for the program, Deb Rudquist, President and CEO of Amery Hospital & Clinic, says “This program meets a critical need in our community because one of the best predictors of where a physician will locate a practice is where he or she completes a medical residency.” An estimated half of physicians locate in the same state and often in the same town where they complete a residency according the Rural Health Research Center. The first resident in the program will begin practicing at Amery Hospital & Clinic in 2019; a resident will begin training at Westfields in 2020.

The three-year program is being implemented through a $750,000 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. HealthPartners Institute for Education and Research trains more than 400 medical residents each year.

avid Brooks’ recent bestseller The Road to Character makes a compelling case for the importance of character in our lives. He draws a distinction between what he calls the résumé virtues and the eulogy virtues. The résumé virtues are our accomplishments and competencies which help us gain employment while the eulogy virtues are those things which have most to do with our character. Are we kind, honest, or brave, and do we form loving and lasting relationships? Do we spend as much time cultivating our character as we do our work skills and educational credentials? His book is a powerful and moving exhortation to spend more time and effort working on our characters. We will probably be remembered more for our character (or lack thereof) than for the skills and accomplishments listed on our résumés. Reflect on what you can do this year to improve your character.

Leonard V. Bergan Leonard Vernon Bergan died December 3, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. He closed his life of eighty-eight years, the last ten of which he was retired and enjoyed living on Bear Trap Lake three miles west of Amery, WI Leonard was born August 17, 1927 , to Leander and Alma Bergan at the family farm three miles north of Maddock, ND. Leonard received, from his father, his first lessons in the sacredness of the land, the integrity of work and the value of perseverence as he worked beside him planting and harvesting the fields. He graduated from Benson county Agricultural School in 1945.

Following graduation, Leonard served in the U.S. Navy serving most of the time in China, Japan and Korea. Upon returning home, he attended Dakota Business College and North Dakota State University.

His first position was as a retail salesman for Standard Oil Company in Devils Lake, ND. In 1955 he joined First National Bank in Crookston, MN. Four years later he accepted an offer from R.T. McCulla of a partnership in the John Deere dealership in Crookston. In 1963 he purchased McCulla's interest and became sole owner of Crookston Implement until he sold the dealership and retired in 1996.

Leonard was dedicated to the interests of the farm equipement industry and worked diligently on its behalf. In 1969 he was elected to the MinnesotaSouth Dakota Retail Farm and Power Equipment Dealers Association Board of Directors and served as its President in 1977. In 1976 he was elected to the National Retail Farm and Power Equipment Dealers Association Board of Directors and served as Chairman of the Legislative Committe. In 1983 he was elected President of the National Retail Farm and Power Equipment Dealers Association. He also served, for a number of years, on the John Deere Company Dealer Advisory Counsel.

Throughout his business career Leonard was involved in the insurance and banking industries.

He was elected in 1981 to the Board of Directors of Federated Mutual Insurance Company of Owatonna and served in that capacity for twenty one years. He also served as a Director of First National Bank in Crookston for twenty years.

Although Leonard was interested and participated in many things on the state and national level nothing was dearer to him than his home community of Crookston, Minnesota. He was very active

and served on the local hospital, school and college boards, committees and fund drives.

His earlier years were busy with service in the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was President in 1959 during which time he was named the Outstanding Jayce President in the state of Minnesota.

He was a member of the Lions, Eagles, American Legion and Knights of Columbus.

He was honored by his community in 1970 when they named him King Agassiz of West Polk County for the Red River Valley Winter Shows. In 1984 they again honored him by choosing him as the Grand Marshal for the Pioneer Day Parade in Crookston.

In his leisure time Leonard liked nothing better than a sunny day on a great golf course! He also had fulfi lled his life long dream of flying when, in l978, he earned his private pilots license.

All of these activities Leonard found rewarding and fulfi lling but his greatest treasure was his family.

He married Patricia Vaughn in 1952. They had five children. Patricia died in l971.

Leonard married Jacqueline Syrup in 1972. Upon marrying Jacqueline his family was increased with the addition of her three sons.

Leonard is preceded in death by his parents as well as one brother and one sister.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline and his children: Barry Bergan (Crookston, Minnesota), Bridgett Stokka and husband David (Binford, ND), Cynthia Bergan (Tucson, AZ), Bart Bergan and wife Mary (Amery, Wisconsin), Stacy Rusling and husband Marc (Grand Forks, ND) and stepsons: John Lanz and wife Bernie Foster (Corvallis, Oregon) Thomas Lanz and wife Wendy Beaton (Woodbury, Minnesota) and James Lanz and wife Kelly (Cottage Grove, Minnesota). He is survived by twelve grandchildren; Nicholas Bergan (Samantha), Johnathan Brekken (Lauren), Leah Brekken, Josuha Brekken (Erin), Catherine Brekken, Hannah Bergan, Patrick Bergan, Heather Morrisette (R.J.), Michelle Cariveau (Shawn), Trisha Peterson (Jeff), Jordan Rusling, Carly Rusling and three step-grandchildren; Meredith Jacqueline Beaton-Lanz, Matthew Beaton-Lanz, Carolyn Beaton-Lanz, Alysson Lanz and Jordan Haley. Survivors also include eight great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Orin Bergan (Mesa, AZ,) and sister-in-law Wilma Bergan (Yuma, AZ).

Edward G. O’Neill Edward George O’Neill, age 85 of Amery, WI passed away at his home on December 19, 2015. Edward was a veteran of the Korean War, serving on the USS Benham (DD-796), and subsequently worked as a mechanical engineer at Univac, Comten, Medtronic, Daig, and Mentor. He had many interests and at various times was active in the St. Croix Sailing Club, Lake Wapogasset-Bear Trap Lake Association, and Sodbusters RC Club.

Edward was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen; mother, Aurelia (Nistler) Peck; father, Raymond; brothers, John, Larry, Dick and Danny; sisters, Peggy, Patsy and Mary Lou. Survived by loving children and step-children, Colleen O’Neill (William Baker), Alan (Jennifer) O’Neill, Roxanne (David) Hyde, Gail Vokovan, Gregory (Goody) Vokovan, William (Beverly) Vokovan and Paul (Kristi Olson) Vokovan; grandchildren, Samuel (Lauren), Alexander, Kaitlin (Trent), William, Benjamin, Jonathan, Nathaniel and Joshua, Faith, Grace, Kate, Eric, Jessica and Hilary; and brother, Tim. A memorial service was held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Amery, WI on Sunday, December 27, 2015 at 2 PM. A visitation was held one hour before the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Amery Senior Center, 608 Harriman Ave. S., Amery, WI 54001.

Interment was held Monday, December 28th, at 11:00 AM at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, at Assembly Area #3 at 10:45 am.

Warriors fall to undefeated Panthers

Shooting was cold all around Dec. 15 in the Amery High School gymnasium as the Warriors fell 47-31 to St. Croix Central in a Middle Border Conference showdown.

The Warriors (2-3, 1-3 MBC) shot just 26 percent from the field and 15 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. To make matters worse, Amery was a dismal 37 percent from the free throw line.

The only good part of that scenario was that SCC (4-0, 3-0 MBC) struggled equally as bad from the charity strip and was worse from 3-point range. The two teams also combined for 34 turnovers.

Unfortunately for the home team, the

Panthers pulled away with 21-for-48 (43 percent) shooting overall from the field and outrebounded the Warriors 25-19.

Beau Helin tried to will the Warriors into this game, but found himself in quick foul trouble after getting called for a pair of first half charges. He still managed to lead Amery’s attack with 14 points and two assists, and pitched in six rebounds along the way.

Connor McBrayer hauled din a teamhigh nine rebounds and finished with four points. Brett Schulte added seven points, seven rebounds, one steal and one block.

Also scoring for the Warriors were Lane Christensen (three points), Riley Waltz (two points) and Seth Amundsen (one point).

Warriors battle Blizzard, but can’t keep up

On Thursday, the Amery boys’ hockey team took on the Webster/Siren/Frederic/Luck/Grantsburg (WSFLG) Blizzard and suffered another setback in the form of an 8-3 loss.

“We really worked hard and battled for much of the game,” said Amery Coach Tim Henningsgard. “The score wasn’t indicative of the effort our boys put forth in this one.”

The Blizzard jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 13 minutes before Amery was finally able to get on the board on a Ryan Van Blaricom even-strength goal that was assisted by Parker Griffin and Cam Smith 30 seconds later.

The Warriors didn’t have much time to celebrate, however, as it took just 13 seconds for the Blizzard to notch their fourth goal of the game.

Amery’s David Olson closed out the first period with a goal at 15:50 mark off an Ethan Panek assist.

Olson, and Dylan Nyholm, returned the favor 6 and a half minutes into the third period as they assisted Panek for an even strength goal. But the Blizzard finished with three unanswered goals to keep the Warriors (0-9-1) winless 10 games into the season.

Both teams recorded 29 shots, but the Blizzard were significantly more efficient. WSFLG was charged with six penalties for 12 minutes while Amery committed just two infractions for 4 minutes.

Adam Doroff spent the entire game in the Amery net, collecting 21 saves, while Taran Wols racked up 26 saves in the Blizzard goal. Max Norman recorded two goals and one assist for WSFLG. “For the first time since Thanksgiving, we have some time off before our next game,” Henningsgard said. “Hopefully we can get a little healthier and work some of these kids at their new positions during practice.”

Bucks prep for life without injured coach Jason Kidd

ST. FRANCIS, Wis. (AP) — The Milwaukee Bucks are about to experience another unique test.

One of the youngest teams in the league will have to play without coach Jason Kidd as he recovers from right hip surgery.

It will be up to Joe Prunty, a longtime NBA assistant, to lead the Bucks while Kidd is out. Kidd has said he hopes to return to the office in a couple weeks, though it’s unclear when he might be able to coach in a game again.

There is no doubt that he’s still in charge, though.

“Trust me, as soon as soon as we are able to be talking with him, we’ll definitely be in touch,” Prunty said Monday.

Kidd had surgery on Monday in New York. The Bucks made the an-

nouncement after a 101-95 win on Sunday in Phoenix that wrapped up a four-game Western Conference road trip. Kidd, 42, said the injury dated to his playing days and his second stint with the Dallas Mavericks between 2008-12.

The pain has been become chronic, and periodic cortisone shots were no longer helping, Kidd said after Sunday’s game.

“The pain has been to the point where I can’t function. I’ve taken all the medicine that I can do,” Kidd said.

The task of leading the Bucks out of their early hole in the Eastern Conference falls on Prunty, who is in his 20th season in the NBA and his third year working with Kidd. Prunty assisted Kidd in Brooklyn, then followed Kidd to Milwaukee when he took the Bucks job last season.

Prunty said he will continue to call offensive plays, while assistant Sean Sweeney will draw up the defense.

Things quickly got out of hand for the Amery boys’ hockey team on Tuesday while hosting St. Paul Highland Park, as it gave up two goals in the first 2:16 of the contest. By the end of the second period, the Warriors were facing a 5-0 deficit and ended up losing the game by a score of 7-1.

“This game was a little disappointing,” said Amery Coach Tim Henningsgard. “Over the weekend we played with great effort. We just didn’t get that tonight and the score turned lopsided pretty quickly.”

After getting outshot, 13-4, in the first period, the heat continued to pick up around the Amery goal as St. Paul Highland Park ended up blasting 53

shots on goal, compared to just 23 shots by the Warriors.

“The one bright spot was Adam Doroff in the nets,” said Henningsgard.

“He came in relief and had many nice saves.”

Adrian Troff, who faced eight shots in the first 7 minutes, was relieved by Doroff, who finished with 41 saves and recorded a 91 percent save percentage for the game.

Amery’s lone goal came 3 minutes into the third period when Ethan Panek scored an even strength goal off a David Olson assist.

St. Paul’s Billy Wengler finished with four goals and one assist.

Amery was charged with six penalties for 15 minutes while St. Paul had just one infraction for 2 minutes.

Amery girls pick up first conference win

A solid all-around team effort led the Amery girls’ basketball team to its first Middle Border Conference victory of the season on Dec. 17, when they defeated Ellsworth by 26 points, 58-32.

The Warriors (3-4, 1-3 MBC) had two players in double figures scoring.

Senior Jillian Jensen led all players with 16 points and two steals while freshman Abby Schmidt poured in another 13 points, along with teamhighs in rebounds (five) and steals (two). In total, 10 Warriors made it on the scoreboard. Kat-

lyn Fouks finished with six points and Shawna Weise, five points.

Hailey Streich tallied four points and four rebounds. Madelyn Granica added four points, three blocks, five assists and four rebounds.

Also scoring were Brianna Wundrow (three points, three assists), Esmee Luchtenburg (three points), Gabby Gredrick (two points) and Dani Meyer (two points).

Amery shot 53 percent from the field on 24-for45 shooting. Ellsworth (0-4, 0-4 MBC) hit just 26 percent of its shots and had no scorers in double figures.

The Amery girls’ basketball team got its first taste of victory since a 59-28 season opening win over Barron on Monday night when it toppled the Grantsburg Pirates by a score of 38-31 in Amery.

Senior Jillian Jensen and freshman Madelyn Granica provided the perfect 1-2 punch to give the Warriors (3-4, 1-3 Middle Border Conference) the edge.

Jensen scored a game-high 15 points and pitched in four rebounds, one block and one steal. Granica posted 12 points to go with her team-best sev-

en rebounds and three blocks.

Granica also finished with two assists and one steal.

Feeding the dynamic duo was Esmee Luchtenburg, who led the team in assists (three) and steals (four) while adding four rebounds and six points to the mix. Dani Meyer contributed three points and Brianna Wundrow, two points.

The Warriors were solid from the free throw line, shooting 12-for-16 as a team.

Grantsburg (2-4, 2-2 Lakeland-West Conference) was led by Cassidy Lee and Jordyn McKenzie with nine points each. Olivia Tucker added 13 rebounds, eight points, three steals and two blocks.

Boys fall to Ellsworth

The Amery boys’ basketball team dropped its third straight game on Friday, Dec. 18, when it fell, 56-49, to Ellsworth.

The Warriors (2-3, 1-3 MBC) outshot Ellsworth (2-3, 2-2 MBC) from both the 2- and 3-point land,

but Ellsworth sank nine more free throws to secure the win.

Riley Waltz hit 3-of-8 3-point attempts for the Warriors and finished with a team-high 15 points.

Brett Schulte added another 12 points, one block, one steal and nine rebounds. Connor McBrayer and Seth Amundsen each notched seven points. Beau Helin scored

five points and fed the offensive attack with six assists. Helin also grabbed a team-best six rebounds.

Peter Elwood scored three points.

McBrayer and Helin both fouled out as Amery finished with 24 team fouls, compared to 18 for Ellsworth. Ellsworth also won the rebounding battle 42-27.

SWEET AND SALTY FUDGE Line an 8x8: baking pan with foil.

Melt in microwave or double boiler: 6 T. butter Add and stir well: 1/2 c. cocoa 1 pound box of powdered sugar 4 T. milk 1 T. vanilla Stir until smooth.

Add and combine: 1 c. mixed nuts Put mixture into the prepared pan and let cool.

Invert pan onto plate, tray, cutting board, etc. and remove the foil. Cut into pieces. Hint: You can use unsalted nuts or no nuts, depending on your taste.

OVERNIGHT CINNAMON FRENCH TOAST Cut into cubes and place half of the cubes into a greased/sprayed 9x9” baking pan: 1 loaf (12 oz.) French bread, cubed Combine well: 1 c. brown sugar 1/4 c. sugar 1 T. cinnamon 6 large egg whites Pour this over the bread cubes.

Add the rest of the bread cubes on top of the sugar mixture.

Combine well and pour over the above: 6 egg yolks 1/4 c. milk 1 tsp. vanilla Squish down any bread cubes if they are sticking up so mixture is fairly level.

Cover and refrigerate overnight.

When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350° Bake for 30-35 minutes or until lightly browned.

If you wish, make icing to drizzle over the baked mixture by combining: 2/3 c. powdered sugar 1/2 tsp. vanilla 2 -3 T. milk (use amount to make a drizzle for the top) Cut into serving pieces and drizzle icing over the warm pieces. Serves 4- 6 depending on size served.

This is a non-bake dessert. It is delicious and tasty looking dessert. It is to be refrigerated for at least 8 hours so plan for that time.

Perhaps you’d like to make a quick bread. This one contains cranberries.

CRANBERRY ORANGE QUICK BREAD Mix together: 1/4 c. butter, softened 1 c. sugar 1 egg 3/4 c. orange juice Combine and add to the above, mixing until combined: 2 c. flour 1/2 tsp. soda 1/2 tsp. salt Add and mix in: 1 T. grated orange zest 1-1/2 c. fresh (or frozen) cranberries 1/2 c. walnut pieces, optional Put mixture into a greased/sprayed 5x9” loaf pan.

Bake at 350° for 1 hour or until done (toothpick test).

Cool in pan 10 minutes on wire rack, then remove from pan and place on wire rack to cool. Makes 1 loaf.

BAKELESS ITALIAN DESSERT You will need 32-40 vanilla wafers, depending on your pan size.

Line bottom of a glass 8x8” or 7x10” baking pan with vanilla wafers, saving the rest for another layer.

Whisk together: 1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk 1/4 c. lemon juice Add and mix in: 1 small can (8 oz.) crushed pineapple with the juice Pour this mixture on top of the vanilla wafers.

Put on another layer of vanilla wafers, enough to cover like before.

Spread over the second layer of wafers: 1 carton (8 oz.) frozen whipped topping, thawed Sprinkle on top of the whipped topping: 2 c. flaked coconut Drain well and put on top of the coconut: 12-15 maraschino cherries.

Refrigerate at least 8 hours before serving.

If you like peanut butter and candy, this simple recipe is for you. It is a never-fail recipe and so easy but good-tasting, too.

PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE Line an 8x8: baking pan with foil.

Melt in microwave or double boiler, stirring until melted and smooth: 1/2 pound butter (2 sticks) 1 jar (8 oz.) peanut butter Stir in until smooth: 1 pound box of powdered sugar Pour mixture into lined pan. Let cool. Remove, turning pan upside down carefully onto a plate, tray or cutting board, etc. and remove the foil. Cut into pieces.

This type of recipe has many names but this particular recipe is named Country Beef Pot. Make it in your large skillet or pot. It’s a stick-to-your ribs meal.

COUNTRY BEEF POT Brown in skillet or pot for 6-8 minutes or until beef is done, then drain: 1 pound lean ground beef 1 green pepper, seeded and chopped (or amount you want) 1 onion chopped (amount you want) Stir in and bring to a boil: 2-1/2 c. water 1 jar (26 oz.) spaghetti sauce, your favorite 1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning 1 tsp. granulated garlic powder (or amount you want) Reduce heat and stir in: 3 c. uncooked wide egg noodles (5 oz.)

Simmer, uncovered, for 8-10 minutes or until noodles are tender.

Serves 3-4. Hint: Adjust the seasonings to your taste.

Tip: Make the easiest cake ever. Cut a baked angel food cake horizontally into two pieces.. Top the bottom layer with frozen whipped topping, thawed.

Add some of your favorite things like sprinkles, broken candy bars, nuts, mini chips, colored sugar or whatever you want.

Add the top layer and more frozen whipped topping, thawed, and sprinkle more of your topping on top. Hint: You can use cake for any occasion by tinting the whipped topping or using the add-ons for the special occasion look you’re striving for.

WITC awards 252 scholarships for spring students RICE LAKE, Wis. - WITC's loyal and generous donors continue to provide important financial assistance to the students WITC serves. The December scholarship donor/recipient receptions were held at the four WITC campuses where nearly $110,000 in scholarships were awarded. This represents a 10 percent increase in the amount awarded and 15 percent more students receiving scholarships compared to fall 2014.

"The WITC Foundation is fortunate to be supported by generous donors who want to help our students achieve their academic goals," said Craig Fowler, executive director of the WITC Foundation and WITC-Rice Lake campus administrator. De-icing Salts and Landscapes Don’t Mix Diana Alfuth Horticulture Educator With winter cold comes icy and slippery walkways and driveways.

While we need to clear surfaces of ice for safety’s sake, we also need to be aware of the negative impacts deicing materials can have.

The most common de-icing product is sodium chloride—ordinary table salt or rock salt. Salt is corrosive and can not only damage concrete, but sodium and chloride are both toxic to plants in high concentrations. Salt applied to a walk or driveway will wash off and into the surrounding soil, building up over time.

This destroys soil structure, raises soil pH, causes soil compaction which reduces water infiltration and soil aeration, damages soil microbial life, affects availability of nutrients to plants, and can reduce plants’ ability to take up water. The result can be plant symptoms

such as poor growth, browning leaf tips, plant dieback, or plant death. It may take several years in some cases for symptoms of salt-related damage to appear. Lawn areas, especially along walk or drive edges, die off and can become bare or weedy.

Salt can run off into storm sewers and into lakes and rivers where it is toxic to those ecosystems. Small creeks and ponds are especially affected by salt runoff. Chloride connected to deicing salts can also find its way into wells, which affects human health. Additionally, sodium chloride can be toxic to pets if ingested, such as from licking paws or drinking out of salt-laden puddles.

Sodium chloride only works to 15-20 degrees F, so when the temperature is lower than that, it won’t be effective. It is usually the least expensive and most readily available option, but there are other commercially available de-icing products.

Some products consist of salt with other materials mixed in to lower the melting temperature.

Other de-icers include calcium chloride, which is effective to -20 degrees F and acts very quickly, but it is much more expensive, highly corrosive, readily leaches into

Magnesium chloride works down to -10 F and releases 40% less chloride into the environment than rock salt or calcium chloride; however it is also expensive and damaging to plants. Potassium chloride, which is used as a commercial fertilizer, only works to 25 degrees F, is relatively expensive and can damage plants, but doesn’t damage soil structure as much as other materials.

It is not as effective as other products, especially at temperatures below 25 degrees F. To avoid salt damage to plants and the environment, always use as little de-icing material as necessary for safety purposes. Use it only where needed in high-traffic areas, and try to apply it before the ice bonds to the pavement for better effectiveness. Use sand, wood ashes (such as from your fireplace), or kitty

litter to provide traction in all temperatures, or mix these materials with a small amount of salt to get both melting and traction. Try to keep salt from washing into storm sewers, lakes or rivers.

Avoid shoveling salt-laden snow into planting beds or lawns. In areas where you expect salt to accumulate, choose plants that have tolerance for higher salt levels. You can also try flushing soil in salty areas in spring, applying several inches of water, to remove salt from plant root zones.

In areas with heavy clay soil that has become very salt-laden and compacted, application of gypsum can displace sodium ions

and improve aeration and drainage.

Salt or other ice melting products can be an important tool to keep surfaces safe during winter. However, they all can damage surfaces as well as plants, soil, and the environment, so they should be used appropriately and in moderation.

Leichtle, Professor Emeritus, University of Wisconsin River Falls. Kurt Leichtle grew up in Beaver Dam, WI near Madison. He began a circle of the upper Midwest by attending Luther College and the University of Illinois, Chicago before settling for fourteen years in Minnesota. The circle was completed, to his amazement, when he moved back to Wisconsin in 1991. History has occupied his mind and life since high school. His PhD was in 19th century U. S. politics resulting in The Crusade Against Slavery: Edward Coles Pioneer of Freedom with coauthor Bruce Carveth. He managed the Gibbs Farm Museum and served as Director of Public Relations for the Episcopal Church Home. For the last 30 years he has taught US history and culture mostly at UWRF. Currently his projects include the history of Boy

Scouts and Girl Scouts as the organizations and ideals interact with American culture and the Ridgely family of Maryland, a “lost” influencer of American economics and culture through the 19th century.

The discussion focuses on how American culture and ideas were developed and then changed, repeatedly, to meet a changing world. Intriguingly Americans have been reluctant to give up the core ideas and are often not clear on how the ideas have changed. The changes can often be seen in the popular discourse. The discussion concentrate on two ideas from the founding of the United States—Individualism and the Virtuous Citizen—and two ideas from the early 19th century—the Selfmade Made and Perfectionism. These four ideas can still be found within the core of American identity. How have they changed, in what ways do they will they continue to change? Come join the conversation.

MADISON, Wis. (AP)— Two Republican lawmakers are circulating a bill that would prohibit the state and local governments from banning live Christmas trees in the state Capitol rotunda and churches.

Rep. Jesse Kremer and Sen. Stephen Nass said in a memo seeking co-sponsors Tuesday that fire

departments in smaller communities have been banning live Christmas trees in churches, even though national fire prevention guidelines permit them with adequate safeguards.

Chuck Ruetten, fire marshal with the Jackson Fire Department, said he has told churches in his jurisdiction they can't

have live trees. He says they're too dangerous.

Jay Shambeau is chairman of St. Lucas Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kewaskum. He said Kewaskum Fire Chief Mark Groeschel has warned the church this is their last year for a live tree.

Groeschel didn't return a voicemail.

Great Lakes Fat Bike Series Opens Wisconsin lawmaker says more gun rights at Big Rock Creek Retreat ST. CROIX FALLS— Just over 300 fat bike racers took on the challenging trail system of one of Polk County’s premier outdoor recreation facilities, Big Rock Creek Retreat, just north of St. Croix Falls, Sat., Dec. 19.

The third annual Solstice Chase fat bike race, had competitors from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois and Ontario, Canada, in two tough races, one 42 kilometers long and the other 21 kilometers, at the 2016 season’s first regional race.

With little snow and the ground frozen, the course was fast, with twice as many racers as last year riding in perfect winter conditions.

Jeff Hall, Farmington, MN, repeated his 2014 Solstice Chase win, leading the man’s 42K field from the start.

Jenna Rinehart, Mankato, MN, took the top podium spot in the women’s 42K. The 2016 Great Lakes Fat Bike Series will have 9 races spread over the Midwest states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan, with the final race, the Fat Bike Birkie, in Cable, WI, in early March, when the Fat Bike World Champions of 2016 will be decided. cle. They are an evolution of the now 30+ year old mountain bike, combining the mountain bike’s low gearing, that allows climbing steep hills, with very wide (4 inches), soft, low pressure tires that float over trail surfaces even a mountain bike would sink into. A new world of winter biking has been made possible with the fat bike, from icy roads to trails that previously have been impossible to ride. Like everything else, when the first one was built, it was fun, when the second one was built, there was a race.

MADISON, Wis. (AP)—The shooting at a Madison mall over the weekend shows that it's necessary to expand gun owners' rights so people can protect themselves from criminals, a Wisconsin legislator said Monday.

Republican Rep. Bob Gannon said in a statement that there would be less crime if more people were trained to shoot at someone who threatened them, like a mall shooter. He called on citizens ``to stand up and fight back.'' ``Wisconsin does not have a death penalty law, but with significant practice and careful aim, law abiding citizens can help clean our society of these scum bags,'' Gannon said. ``A gang banger in the mall with a gun is going to think twice if there could be a law abiding (concealed carry license) holder standing behind them fully prepared to shoot.''

The freshman from Slinger says a bill that would allow concealed weapons in college buildings and stadiums has become even more important and urged his colleagues to pass it quickly.

Rep. Chris Taylor, D-Madison, called Gannon's comments irresponsible and dangerous. Gannon said Taylor ``believes we should all crawl under the desk and take a shot to the head.''

Taylor responded to that remark by saying that people want a serious response to gun issues.

The shooting at East Towne Mall on Saturday prompted a temporary lockdown and left one person wounded in the leg. Police said someone opened fire during a fight between a group of young men.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I know for sure that Dave and I enjoyed every minute of the Christmas celebration with our great family and friends. The past few days have been jammed packed with various activities and parties, with the celebration continuing with the Kuhl gathering in a couple of weeks...it’s been fun-fi lled with more to come! And we had a white Christmas after all. The beautiful snow showed up just in time for the holidays. It was great snowman making and snowball fighting kind

of snow.

Once again, thank you so much to the Amery boys and girls in grades K-4 for sharing their Christmas/ Winter drawings with our readers. As you can see, this issue also contains some of the cards that area businesses used for their New Year’s greetings. Each child did a super job with their drawings.

I know that I have mentioned this before but we really appreciate everyone’s efforts in lighting up your home for the holidays. The beautiful lights and deco-

rations are wonderful to view while driving around town and in the countryside…Thank You! This past Saturday was the 23rd Annual John Legut Memorial Alumni Hockey game at the Amery Ice Arena. It’s always fun to have the guys get back together to play hockey. I’m sure there were a few sore and tired bodies on Sunday morning after the game. As you can tell from the group picture below, there was a great turnout of alumni at the game.

And thinking of skating, the Amery Youth Hockey Association is hosting a fundraiser “Skate To Defeat ALS” at the rink during open skating on Friday, January 8. The event is from 7:30-9:30pm with all proceeds being donated to the ALS Association.

As you may know, my husband, Dave, has been diagnosed with ALS. Let’s all join together on January 8 and “Skate To Defeat ALS”.
