Preface This course, Electrical Theory I, is the first in a two course series covering the electrical theory associated with the electrical and systems trades.

With the growing complexity of electrical systems, it is increasingly important for technicians to have a solid foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of their craft. IEC’s Electrical and Systems Training Series is intended to provide technicians with training courses to supplement their prior field and/or classroom experience.

This manual is intended for use with the included worksheets and the other required materials for this course, as listed on the title page. This is a study guide for one of many courses included in IEC National’s Electrical and Systems Training series. It is intended to be an instructor-led course utilizing traditional classroom presentation or via computer-based delivery with instructor interaction.

The format and outline for each lesson includes: lesson number, title, purpose, objectives, lesson text assignments, safety components, and worksheets. The reading homework assignment due at the beginning of each lesson is intended to better prepare the student for the instructor’s discussion of the lesson.

This training manual was developed by the National IEC Apprenticeship and Training Committee’s Curriculum Development Task Group. Each Task Group participant is a licensed electrician and an experienced instructor. These individuals were inspired to invest their time, energy and money in this project through their own dedication to electrical training. This document is a work in progress and will provide a pattern and basic style for future training manuals. The Task Group sincerely desires your criticism and comments in order to strive toward perfecting this document. If you discover errors (typographical or content) in the printed material or the associated ExamView assessment banks, please submit an errata form immediately. Although submitted errata are addressed as they are received, the course materials are revised periodically in accordance with each reference book cycle or issuance of new editions of the required text books.

Conditions of Use and Licensing Agreement 1. The publication date for the 1st edition of the IEC National Electrical and Systems Training Series is January 2013. The materials included therein are believed to be current and reflective of current regulatory requirements and applicable codes. Users should contact Independent Electrical Contractors, Inc., Attention: Apprenticeship and Training Department, 4401 Ford Avenue, Suite 1100, Alexandria, Virginia 22302 to ascertain that these materials are still current prior to use. The training manual and student textbooks (“Materials”) are sold with the understanding and agreement of the Purchaser that I.E.C. grants the Purchaser a revocable, nonexclusive, nontransferable license to use the Materials for the purposes of teaching the course conditioned on the Purchaser’s continued compliance with these conditions of use. IEC does not warrant or represent that the Materials are free from errors or conflicts. Purchaser and any Users of the Materials are encouraged to report any errors, conflicts, or omissions to IEC, Attention: Apprenticeship and Training Department, so that errors can be corrected.

2. The IEC National Electrical and Systems Training Series courses are designed with a number of specific components, each of which must be used if the student is to gain full benefit from the training. Specifically, latest editions of both the student and instructor training manuals must be used to ensure that all key components are covered. While lessons may be rearranged within a course, and requirements of a local nature may be incorporated into the training manual as required, all material within a course must be covered to ensure that the student is properly prepared.

3. The appropriate version of training manuals must be purchased and implemented to help ensure that students are being taught with the most up-to-date materials. Students must be provided or required to obtain the textbooks cited in the training materials. Teaching from out-of-date editions of either the manuals or the textbooks may result in students being taught outdated subject matter that might conflict with current practices. The electrical and systems industries are continually changing. New materials and processes are being introduced. Standards are being revised; new standards are being introduced; and local, state and federal requirements are subject to continual revision. Textbooks are updated on an irregular basis.

4. Students should be encouraged to retain all of their training materials for reference throughout their training and working career, but should be advised to check current codes, regulations, etc. for specific questions or problems.

5. While the training manuals and related texts, standards, and reference material incorporate a significant degree of safety training, it does not, nor is it intended to, provide all of the types of safety training required for contractor employees under OSHA, EPA, and similar regulations.

Contractors and employees are encouraged to refer to applicable local, state, and federal regulations to ensure that they are in compliance with all applicable safety and health guidelines.

6. Purchaser acknowledges that IEC is the owner of all copyrights in and to the Materials. All rights in and to the Materials are reserved. Foreword This training series is application based and has been designed to be taught by electrical and systems technicians. Those instructors who lack field experience may encounter difficulties. Progression through this training manual should be concurrent with knowledge gained through field instruction.

The material presented in the student manual is presented on the same page, in the same location, as in the instructor manual. Blank spaces appear in the student manual where instructor information was omitted.

Although some textbooks and reference materials are used in subsequent courses, students should be encouraged to retain all of their texts for reference throughout their formal training and working career. However, students should be advised to check current codes, regulations, and the like for specific questions or problems.

Within this curriculum, both proper and industry-accepted terminology is used.

It is recognized that regional variations exist and these terms should also be presented by the instructor.

Correct units of measurement include Amperes, kVA, kcmil, AWG, etc. However, amps, KVA, KCMIL, awg, etc. are frequently used and understood to have equivalent meaning within the industry. For example, nameplate and catalog information often uses KW, KVAR, and va as the unit of measure for the data. The use of other than scientifically correct units in this manual is deliberate. This will better prepare the students to recognize and understand those commonly used.

Tools and wiring methods are frequently referred to by their trade names. For example, lineman’s pliers are referred to as “Kleins”; “greenfield” is used instead of flexible metal conduit; “BX” instead of Type AC cable; “romex” instead of Type NM cable; etc. These may also be identified by local or regional names. An attempt has been made to expose the students to many variations of nomenclature so that they are better prepared to communicate in the field.
