LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP Achieving the five-year mark for any organization is a significant milestone. It represents not only the passage of time but also a journey of hard work, dedication and unyielding commitment to a unified mission and vision. This September, we proudly celebrated our company’s fifth anniversary, a momentous occasion that coincided with another remarkable achievement — our successful listing on Nasdaq. As I look back on our journey and forward to the future, I am filled with gratitude, pride and boundless enthusiasm.

“Our mission stands strong: To secure the future of community oncology, ensuring that exceptional and equitable cancer care is a reality for all — no matter where they reside.”

One of the most visible changes marking this anniversary is our refreshed logo, which now features a modern compass arrow meant to illustrate the strategic guidance that AON offers. The compass comprises overlapping, connected shapes showing the relationship between practice and network working and progressing together to reach a common goal. The new logo reflects a more modern brand and our expanding portfolio of services and move toward value-based care and innovation. Our new logo is a symbol of our adaptability, resilience and commitment to charting a continued path toward success.

While logos and milestones are important, they are but symbols of the collective effort that has brought us to this point. Together, we have grown as individuals and as a company. We’ve embraced opportunities, navigated through uncertainties and emerged stronger and more resilient. Our progress is not only a testament to our individual contributions but also to our ability to collaborate and work together.

As we acknowledge the five years of growth and progress for AON, we must do so with gratitude for the past and a deep sense of optimism for the future. With the modern compass arrow as our guide, I am excited to embark on the next leg of our journey, poised for even greater success and positive impact. The journey ahead may be challenging, but it is one we are prepared for because of the foundation we’ve built as an organization.

S

ince its inception five years ago, AON has continued to build an extensive network of successful community oncology practices across the United States, and there is no sign of this growth slowing. The leadership and operations teams have successfully managed to make the progression of the network part of its day-to-day objectives, and the transition of new practices and providers has become a pristine combination of art and science.

As a next step, to synergize the actions AON has taken forward in growth, we must focus on the overall network strategy and the connected patient experience and movement to value-driven care. The constructs of “value to whom” are often narrow and focused on an external tie into payer goals around cost containment and associated quality metrics that do not always contribute toward patient experience. The movement to value is an orchestration of efforts around tying five “value constructs:” value to the physician, value to the patient, value to our staff, value to payers and value to our life science partners.

To be leaders, we aim to work closely with our payer partners and clinical teams to create an environment where our patients are the central focus. People know how other industries, such as retail, hospitality and travel, have become efficient and service oriented. This move toward “consumerism” is the goal that healthcare must also strive for as well. Patients have the power to choose where they receive their care, and they can do their own research before selecting something as important as an oncologist. This is where clinical innovation is crucial.

Clinical innovation is the intersection of multidisciplinary collaboration around evidence-based data, to drive prospective outcomes to continuously move the bar higher for patient experience and staff. Our goals include engaging with the community to impact the healthcare continuum equitably and responsibly.

We are working closely with each team within AON to understand current processes and procedures.

Innovation often brings together people, processes and technology but not without first understanding the status of each. Technology is not always an answer, as it can often make processes or people slower or more frustrated. Adding more people to a team is not necessarily the best use of resources, as many times adjusting a process can solve inefficiencies. These are just some of the strategies our team will employ.

As the healthcare landscape changes and the way reimbursement is managed, the focus on fee-for-value will continually increase. AON has been successful thus far in many partnerships with various payers in multiple markets providing lower-cost, high-value care alternatives. Our objectives are to continue to set ourselves apart as a trusted option with CMS’s Enhancing Oncology Model (EOM) and many other programs. 

ctober is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this annual event reminds us of the critical importance of safeguarding our digital lives and protecting private information. In today's digitally connected world, Chris Kirchov, CISSP, CCNP-S, CSIS, CIOS cybersecurity is not just a Assoc. Director, buzzword but a critical Network Operations & necessity. For those of us in the Security U.S. healthcare industry, the stakes are particularly high, and the risks are constantly evolving.

Therefore, it's imperative that we all play our part in fortifying our digital defenses.

Common Cybersecurity Threats First, let's acknowledge the adversaries we face in the digital realm. Cyber threats come in various forms, from phishing emails that lure unsuspecting victims to ransomware attacks that hold critical data hostage. Malware, data breaches and insider threats also loom large.

Remote Work and Network Vigilance With remote work now the norm, our networks extend beyond the office walls. This shift presents both opportunities and challenges. While it offers flexibility, it also exposes our corporations to a broader attack surface.

Employees must remain vigilant and adhere to corporate policies and standards, whether working from the office or remotely.

Evolving Threat Landscape Cyber threats evolve at breakneck speed. Hackers are continually devising new tactics to exploit vulnerabilities. We must adapt our defenses accordingly.

TENA MESSER EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT PRACTICE OPERATIONS

1. How long have you been with AON? I have been with AON for four years (started January 2020), but I have been with a legacy practice for 31 years.

2. What does a "day in the life" look like for you in your role?

My day begins with coffee and a quick assessment of calendar events and a plan for the day to achieve key tasks for projects. And then more coffee. I am typically fielding calls and texts from physicians and direct reports by 7:30 a.m. Pending meeting commitments, I arrive at a clinic location by 8:00 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. and then it is on! I am juggling project work between meetings, taking impromptu calls to support team members as well as keeping a running list of “to-dos” collected along the way. I try to be available to managers, directors and physicians as much as possible when they have questions, so they can keep moving with their work. Meeting commitments can be a bit challenging and quickly consume a day, often pushing project work and email catch-up to the evening. During the day, I keep a running mental and physical list of key tasks and projects, and I reference reminders placed on my calendar to achieve deadlines and goals for the timely completion of key items for the day. I typically pick a focus and a few of the key items that I must complete by the end of the day, and I often do this by clinic, division or physician. I have found this most successful when there are many competing tasks and projects. I typically head home around 7:00 p.m. if I do not have a late meeting requiring

me to be in person at the particular office. After dinner, I typically return to the laptop to churn out a bit more work, answer emails and ensure systems work is complete (Concur, WorkDay, Circulus, etc.). Typical tasks for the day include contract reviews, agreement updates, financial statement and expense reviews, revenue cyclerelated reports reviews and clinic performance reviews among other projects. I visit practices at a minimum quarterly and more often as needed for problem or project management.

3. What goals are you and your team working to achieve?

I have incredible team members, and we are continually striving to improve efficiency, staff support and cost savings. It is critical for our leaders to understand the tasks and challenges of the different positions in the clinic to give proper guidance. An overarching goal is to support, train and empower managers to operate their clinics confidently. We are currently focused on staff engagement, front office/financial counselor workflow accuracy and efficiency and ensuring a smooth transition of patient care support services to the clinics.

4. How does your role contribute to AON's overall mission and goals?

Supporting physicians to grow and lead their practices. Our mission is to promote quality patient care, a positive work culture and financially healthy divisions.

5. What are you most proud of when it comes to your team and department?

Our patient satisfaction scores for almost all of our practices are above goal, and this is worth all of the work we do to support the clinics. I am also very proud when I receive positive feedback about the AON team supporting a clinic. Just recently, an office manager shared that she loved her job with AON when I inquired about how things were going for her practice. Our goal would be to hear this from all staff.

Challenge, trust and appreciate. I try to be a kind leader and set clear expectations, and I may be a bit intense at times. This pushes us to succeed in completing projects, avoid pitfalls and be proud of our work. I do not ask a team member to do anything I would not do or jump in to support them in completing a task. I recognize we all make mistakes, and I expect transparency in this regard.

We learn and grow from mistakes.

9. What's your favorite part about working for AON? I am proud to work for a company that supports quality oncology practices in communities where access to care is limited. Our mission to support physicians to build their businesses and lead their practices in models best positioned to provide cutting-edge care is refreshing from a corporate institution and even better with overall cost savings.

10. What has been the most memorable moment for you while you’ve worked for AON? After the Messino Cancer Centers joined AON in January 2020, I arrived at the office one very chilly January morning and was very fatigued from the events of the transition. Just as I approached the building, my phone rang. It was Todd Schonherz. I answered with

Flower gardening, glamping and hiking, going on adventures and spending time with my standard poodles Ranger Rick and Bogey Bear.

14. What is your favorite book (or books)?

The Way of the Shepherd and Pillars of the Earth.

15. What is a fun fact about you?

I cared for and accepted rescue llamas for several years.

It was lots of work but so rewarding to see these regal animals in my pasture.

16. What piece of advice would you give your younger self?

Lighten up and smell a rose or two. It’ll be all right.

17. List three adjectives that describe your personality.

Tenacious, caring and sincere.

18. What is one of your favorite travel destinations, or where do you hope to travel to in your lifetime?

My favorites are Spain, Costa Rica and Budapest. My future travel destinations, I hope, include a river cruise down the Rhine and Italy.

My brother Michael. No one has a bigger heart. 

A

li has been with AON since its inception. She currently works on the AON Pharmacy team and has previously held positions as a pharmacy technician, lead pharmacy technician and pharmacy operations supervisor. She is now the pharmacy operations manager.

Ali’s attraction to working at AON stemmed from her interest in being a part of something new and joining an organization that is helping to build a good foundation for future growth. After she spent a few years in an oncologic pharmacy, she found a desire to expand her knowledge. “I love that this role has given me the opportunity to expand my knowledge and experience as a pharmacy technician as there are not many growth opportunities in our field,” Ali said.

When asked what her favorite part of her role was, she shared, “I love being a part of something that can make a patient’s journey with cancer just a little bit easier. When we receive prescriptions for patients who are newly diagnosed, we understand they are overwhelmed, and we are there to make one part of the process easier for the patient to manage.” She also gave credit to her manager, Doug Braun, senior pharmacy director, “He has shaped our pharmacy into what it is today. He truly has a patient-first attitude that inspires our whole team to ensure we are providing the best patient care possible.”

Outside of work, Ali enjoys spending time with her husband, Jake, and dog, Baxter. She also loves reading and traveling. Her and her husband are currently tackling Europe — taking one country at a time.

arol has been with AON for more than two years and is the human resource specialist focused on benefits. She moved from New Jersey to Florida in 2017 to escape the snow and immediately applied for this position when it became available. “I love my team, and I get great satisfaction from helping our employees navigate their benefits,” she shared. “I am here to help them with any issues they may have with their benefits and hopefully take some stress off their minds.”

She brings more than 25 years of experience in HR and employee benefits to the team and

Should You Take a Dietary Supplement?

Dietary Supplements: Facts vs. Myths

P

erceptions about dietary supplements are widespread. Can you decipher facts from myths when it comes to dietary supplements?

Karen Randall, RDN, CSO, LD Oncology Dietitian

1. Myth. No dietary supplement can make up for a poor lifestyle or food choices. Supplements provide vitamins and minerals, but they do not offer either the synergistic benefit of the diet or all the active compounds offered in food required for optimal health. Eating a variety of healthy foods will provide the nutrients our bodies need to function at their best in most cases.

2. Myth. There is no scientific evidence in humans that dietary supplements

can prevent, treat or cure cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other chronic illnesses. Vitamin C is often touted as a natural remedy for the common cold.

However, evidence suggests it may only have a minor role in reducing the duration of cold symptoms in adults, and there is no evidence that regular vitamin C supplementation reduces the incidence of the common cold.

3. Myth. Many drugs and toxic chemicals, as well as herbal supplements, are plantbased. Just like prescription medications, supplements have side effects. Some side effects may be harmful, depending on the herbal supplement, dosage and interactions it will have with other

medications or supplements. Always check with your doctor before beginning a dietary supplement.

4. Myth. Claims advertising dietary supplements to “de-stress” life are misleading. The best dietary advice for the demands of stress is to follow a healthy eating pattern, engage in consistent physical activity, get adequate sleep, take time to relax and do activities you enjoy.

5. Myth. Dietary supplements cannot prevent the harmful effects of smoking or alcohol use. Actually, smoking increases the need for vitamin C, and keep in mind that beta-carotene supplements can actually increase lung cancer risk among smokers. Lastly, excessive alcohol consumption can interfere with the body’s use of several nutrients.

The best way to lose weight and keep it off is to follow a sensible approach that incorporates a healthy eating plan, reduced caloric intake and moderate physical activity under the guidance of a healthcare provider.

Who May Benefit from a Dietary Supplement • Pregnant women have an increased need for folic acid, so they may need a vitamin B supplement.

• Many people over 50 years of age may have difficulty absorbing vitamin B12 from food, so they may need a vitamin B12 supplement.

6. Myth. Dietary supplements are not regulated like drugs in the United States, so they may not be as safe as you assume. Clinical trials are not required for them, and testing is expensive and not universal. This means the producers of supplements do not need to prove their claims to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or any authoritative body. Additionally, dangerous substances have been found in supplements. Two examples of dangerous substances include Chaparral and Kava, and both are herbs that can cause liver damage. Lastly, several supplements have been found to contain substances not on the label. Another point to be aware of with herbal supplements is the strengths may vary depending on how, when and where they are grown.

• Vegans are strict vegetarians who avoid all animal foods and may also need a vitamin B12 supplement.

7. Myth. Weight loss supplements that claim to trap fat, block carbs or boost metabolism typically have similar results to placebos when studied. No over-thecounter supplements have proven to effectively help people lose weight. Some have only shown a temporary decrease in appetite. Overall, the evidence supporting the use of dietary supplements to reduce

What About Taking a Daily Multivitamin

• Elderly people at risk for osteoporosis may need calcium supplements.

• People who rarely are exposed to sunlight may need vitamin D supplements.

• Dark-skinned, obese and elderly people may also require a vitamin D supplement.

• People with medical conditions or who are unable to absorb enough nutrients, such as individuals who have anemia, bariatric surgery, bowel resections and other malabsorptive conditions, may need certain supplements.

Taking a daily multivitamin supplement that provides no more than 100% of the daily value (DV) is usually considered safe. The FDA advises talking to your medical professional before deciding to purchase or use a daily multivitamin since

some vitamins or minerals can interact with medications. It is also suggested to look for third-party certifications. Several third-party companies offer quality control tests to ensure that products contain what their labels say they do. Supplement companies pay for these tests and receive certifications that will be printed on the labels or their websites. Reputable thirdparty testing companies are ConsumerLab. com, NSF International, and the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention.

Food is Best A balanced diet of whole foods provides more than vitamins and minerals. Whole foods provide macronutrients, fiber and phytonutrients that cannot be replaced in supplement form. Best of all, a balanced whole-food meal pattern is an evidencebased strategy for protecting your health.

Sonia Barekzai Facing AML with Courage and Hope

S

onia Barekzai has always called Arizona home, being born and raised under the state’s vast desert skies alongside her brothers, even though her parents’ roots are in Afghanistan. Being the eldest child of the family, she embraced many responsibilities from being a second mother to her younger siblings whom she considers her lifeline to maintaining a lifestyle of healthy and fun habits including going to the gym and lifting weights, attending local Zumba classes and dancing, watching anime, bonding with her mother at concerts and creating memories with her father during their hunting adventures. At other times,

she dedicates herself to chasing her childhood dream of being a doctor and spends time studying.

Life took an unexpected turn on April 18, 2023, when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). AML is a type of cancer that begins in the bone marrow and swiftly moves into the blood. Life’s greatest challenges often arise without warning. In Sonia’s case, it started with a routine dental appointment for a simple and routine check-up and cleaning. She had an X-ray of her mouth, which is common during such an appointment, and noticed that her mouth was rather sore afterward. Believing that the dental assistant may have been just a bit rough during the X-ray, Sonia dismissed the

discomfort. Little did she know that her life was on the cusp of a seismic shift.

The pain intensified over the coming days, and what started as soreness developed into her not being able to open her mouth past a certain point.

She was unable to swallow her spit and struggled to drink water and eat both solid and liquid foods. A few days later, when she was able to open her mouth again, she immediately noticed a white sore on her gums right where her wisdom teeth used to be. She quickly canceled her upcoming dental appointment because of the soreness and discomfort, believing that her pain would not allow her to sit through the entire appointment.

PEOPLE AND PLACES

Sonia scheduled another appointment with her dentist to voice her discomfort and concerns and was dismissed by the dental assistant without an analysis of her mouth. She continued advocating for herself, along with the help of her mother, until the dentist was retrieved, who initially also dismissed her but then took a look and discovered the sore inside her mouth.

“I thought I would see my primary care physician (PCP) for a referral to an ENT (ears, nose and throat specialist) first before going to an oral surgeon because of where I was experiencing pain,” she recounted. “My PCP advised me to see an oral surgeon first. After the appointment with the oral surgeon, I left with no answers again and another prescription for antibiotics.”

“It took a little bit of time to find the sore since it was positioned at the back of my mouth on the inside facing my tongue,” Sonia shared. “My tongue kept hitting it as well as hiding it from view. The dentist said it was most likely an infection due to trauma to the site and sent me home with clindamycin for a week. However, it quickly made me worse. My right tonsil became very swollen, which made swallowing, eating and drinking nearly impossible.”

The antibiotics did not provide her with the relief she was hoping for. In fact, more symptoms came like a freight train a few days later. Sonia began to experience immense head pressure every time she bent over or stood up.

These symptoms are what sent her to the emergency room (ER) when she passed out in the shower.

At that point, the pain continued to spread to her throat, jaw and ear. She hastily went back to her dentist looking for answers and solutions. Thinking it was now a fungal infection, the dentist prescribed Sonia another antibiotic, nystatin, and recommended that if it did not begin to improve in a couple of days, she should see an oral surgeon.

The pain did not go away.

During her ER visit, she discovered her hemoglobin had plummeted to dangerous levels after having bloodwork done, and a blood transfusion was needed. Additionally, she was told her test results revealed she had leukemia.

“Finally, answers,” Sonia explained.

“With a hemoglobin level that low, the ER staff were in awe that I was essentially running on fumes and still functioning normally. Leading up to the diagnosis, I was very mentally tired, exhausted and drained from having

gone from doctor to doctor trying to figure out what was going on and being met with no answers and no diagnosis.

I felt relieved that I was not crazy about my experiences and proud of myself that I kept advocating for myself despite the dismissals I was met with.”

For the first time in her journey, there was clarity, and a path forward began to emerge from the shadows. In this battle, her guiding light has been Board-certified medical oncologist David Kahn, MD, MPH, from Desert Hematology Oncology, located in Surprise, Arizona. The community oncology practice offers a wide range of cancer services including laboratory services for routine and specialized testing, centralized pathology services, home delivery of oral cancer medications, and on-call oncology pharmacists ready to answer questions among other services.

“Sonia has been a wonderful patient to work with,” said Dr. Kahn. “She always has a very positive attitude, which she has maintained throughout her entire cancer journey.”

Her plan forward, which was created by Dr. Kahn, led her through an intricate maze of treatments. Blood transfusions, chemotherapy and bone marrow

biopsies became her new reality. Despite the frequency of aggressive treatments, each step was a step toward becoming healthy again and the future she envisioned — becoming a doctor.

For an independent soul like Sonia, dependency was a bitter pill to swallow during treatments. In the initial stages, she relied on her mother for even the simplest of tasks like eating and using the restroom. This reversal of roles was a poignant reminder of life’s unpredictability.

“Like the strong, warrior-like Afghan women that came before me, I have always been very strong-willed and independent,” she shared. “So, it is a very strange shift in dynamics, having to depend on others to take care of me.”

In the face of cancer, she discovered an unconventional perspective: she considered herself blessed. This challenging journey offered an opportunity for growth, learning and empathy. The cancer journey, paradoxically, became her greatest teacher and gave her insights into the type of doctor she hopes to be.

“I haven’t approached this with an ‘Oh, no, I have cancer’ attitude,” Sonia said. “I have been approaching it with

As she navigates the healthcare system, this time as a patient, she has witnessed the best and worst of healthcare. Her experiences carved out her resolve to advocate for the underserved and vulnerable. As such, she has vowed to treat every patient with the compassion she encountered during her own battles.

“I have met a lot of doctors along the way,” she said. “Dr. Kahn and his team have been phenomenal, and I look up to him as someone I want to be like, not only as a person but as a doctor as well. My experience of being gaslit and dismissed, having my symptoms ignored and overlooked, being interrupted and talked over as I’m trying to speak and explain things by numerous doctors has only strengthened my already burning desire to advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves. It is frustrating when professionals who are trusted to make you feel better do not take you seriously and make you feel crazy and/or dramatic. No one deserves to feel that way, and I look forward to treating my own patients someday with nothing short of genuine compassion.”

Sonia’s journey is not yet over, but with her dream of becoming a doctor still aflame, she marches forward, inspired by her trials and armed with an empathy born of personal experiences. 
