Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association (AOPA) has decided that the in-person 2020 National Assembly that was scheduled to take place September 9-12 in Las Vegas will instead be delivered as a virtual experience on our interactive, easy-to-use web portal over the same dates. This was not an easy decision, but ultimately the health and safety of our attendees, exhibitors, speakers, and staff remains our top priority.

Speaker Highlights Peter Adamczyk, PhD, CPO, currently serves as the Charles Ringrose Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison where he directs the Biomechatronics, Assistive Devices, Gait Engineering and Rehabilitation Laboratory. He holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Robotics and Biomechanics.

Daniel Ayana, RN, MSN, CNP, is a graduate of Walden University School of Nursing with a master’s degree in Adult/gerontology nurse practitioner and is board certified. Daniel is a nurse practitioner with experience managing neurosurgery patients and works for a trauma level one hospital in Minneapolis, MN.

g n i k a e p s Beverly Cusick, PT, MS, NDT, COF/BOC, is an Associate Professor for the Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions—Pediatric Program. She is a guest lecturer for numerous annual conferences, an instructor of more than 450 courses, and has authored two books, several textbook chapters, articles for journals and magazines.

Andreas Giovanni Cutti, PhD, MEng, serves as Applied Research Manager, INAIL Prosthetic Center and as a member of ISO TC 168 Committee. He is associate editor of Prosthetics & Orthotics International and Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing. He earned his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from University of Bologna, Italy.

Emma Beisheim, PT, DPT, is a physical therapist and researcher in the University of Delaware Limb Loss Studies Lab where she investigates functional outcomes following amputation and participates in comprehensive evaluations to assist with prosthesis prescription.

Caitlin Deom, PT, DPT, is a Therapy Manager at the Brain Innovation Center at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab. Caitlin manages an interdisciplinary team, orchestrates logistics surrounding delivery of patient care, works on various department-specific and organization-wide projects, and provides interventions to patients at the inpatient setting.

Emily Bishop, PhD, is a Biomedical Engineer specializing in human biomechanics and knee joint injury and disease.

Emily has 10 years’ experience in Biomedical Engineering.

Emily is a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Calgary performing research to further validate the effectiveness of Spring Loaded™ bionic knee brace, Levitation.

Shaun Douglas Mendenhall, MD, focuses on comprehensive hand and wrist surgery after trauma, congenital differences, tumors, or degenerative processes such as arthritis. He also does peripheral nerve surgery on the upper and lower extremities including the brachial plexus.

Nina Bondre, CPO, is the Clinical Educator for Cascade Orthopedic Supply, Inc. She enjoys learning about new technologies and componentry to assist clinicians in the field. Her clinical focus is on product comparisons and current research to clarify indications and considerations for various designs.

Jennifer Fawcett, CO, specializes in orthotic treatment of the spine focusing on a variety of spinal diagnoses that include trauma, infection, and deformity. She was a contributing author to the Atlas of Spinal Orthotics and lectures regularly to the local spine fellows.

Rickard Brånemark, MD, PhD, MSc, FRSM, is a Research Scientist at the Biomechatronics Group at the Center for Extreme Bionics at MIT Media Lab. Rickard has pioneered the studies on titanium implants to anchor limb prostheses and the use of implanted electrodes to provide motor control and artificial sensory feedback.

He has been acknowledged as the most experienced surgeon in this field.

Prateek Grover, MD, PhD, is a board-certified PM&R physician at Washington University School of Medicine, and Medical Director for the Rehabilitation Institute of St Louis, MO. In addition to a medical degree, Dr. Grover also holds a PhD in biomedical engineering and a master’s degree in healthcare administration.

Stacey Brown, MPO, is an orthotic resident at Hanger Clinic and a recent graduate from Northwestern where she served as student liaison for Women in O&P at Chicago Children’s Museum and the Museum of Science. Stacey is passionate about recruiting students for O&P to elevate our profession and improve the diversity of our field.

Brian Hafner, PhD, is a Professor in the University of Washington Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and a principal investigator at the University of Washington Center on Outcomes Research in Rehabilitation. Dr. Hafner has authored or co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Shuo-Hsiu Chang, PT, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at McGovern Medical School; as Administrative Director of the NeuroRecovery Research Center and Scientist at TIRR Memorial Hermann. His research focuses on the effects of neuromuscular modulation and clinical application of rehabilitation robotic devices.

Andrew Hansen, PhD, is currently the Director of the Minneapolis Adaptive Design & Engineering (MADE) Program at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System.

He is also a Professor of Rehabilitation Science and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Hansen received his PhD in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University.

Bria Collins, MPO, currently serves as a Care Extender at Hanger Clinic. Bria holds a master’s degree in O&P, BS degree in Biomedical Engineering and is working towards a law degree at Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law. Professional interests include healthcare regulatory policy, cross-disciplinary professional relationships, and technology-aided clinical processes.

Anton Johannesson, PhD, CPO(Euro), currently serves as Clinical Manager of Prosthetics at Össur. He is also lead clinician in Prosthetics at Teamolmed in Sweden. He earned his PhD in orthopedics from University of Lund, Sweden. Research interests include lower limb amputation in patients with vascular disease.

Brian Kaluf, CP, FAAOP, holds a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Purdue University and subsequently conducted research at the Computer Simulation of Human Motion lab at the University of Stuttgart. He currently serves as Ability's clinical outcomes research director where he leads research to improve patient evaluations through outcome measures.

Andreas Kannenberg MD (GER), PhD, worked as a physician in Germany for over 10 years. He currently serves as Ottobock’s Executive Medical Director for and coordinates clinical research. He is part of a global medical and research team to consult R&D, product management, reimbursement and sales on medical subjects.

Kenton Kaufman, PHD, PE, is the W Hall Wendel Jr Musculoskeletal Research Professor, Director of Motion Analysis Laboratory, Professor of Bioengineering, and Consultant in the Departments of Orthopedic Surgery, Physiology and Biomedical Engineering at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Kaufman serves on the NIH Advisory Board for Medical Rehabilitation Research and the Medical Advisory Board for AOPA. Professor Edward Lemaire, PhD, is a Professor at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine; Adjunct Professor in Mechanical Engineering, Human Kinetics, Health Sciences, and Systems Design Engineering; and Investigator with The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute’s Centre for Rehabilitation Resewarch and Development. He is also President of the ISPO. Michael Lovdal, PhD, is a leading healthcare analyst who earned his MBA and Doctorate at Harvard Business School, then joined its faculty teaching corporate strategy. Today, he serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia Business School, co-teaching a course on Innovative Models in Global Healthcare.

Jonathan Moore, DPM, MS, received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from the California College of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Moore is widely published on numerous foot and ankle-related topics and serves on multiple professional boards. He was also named as one of Podiatry Management's most influential podiatric physicians in America.

Stephanie Morgan Green, Esq, has been part of the DMEPOS industry for over 20 years, providing legal guidance to physicians, healthcare facilities, and DMEPOS suppliers in all areas of healthcare business and regulatory law. Stephanie has been responsible for all aspects of medical billing, collections, and medical necessity coverage requirements.

Amandi Rhett, MS, CPO/LPO, is currently an Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine’s O&P program and a practitioner at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Houston. Amandi holds a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, and a MS degree in P&O from Baylor College of Medicine.

Noah Rosenblatt, PhD, currently serves as Assistant Professor of the Center for Lower Extremity Ambulatory Research at the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, IL. His primary research focus is mobility and function in lower limb prosthesis users and aging, falls, and stability of gait.

Michael Schaefer, PhD, CPO, is CEO of POHLIG GmbH. He serves as a board member of ISPO Germany. He currently serves as Clinical Chair for OT World and on numerous committees and works for setting quality standards in upper and lower extremity prosthetics in Germany.

Mayank Seth, PhD, MSc, is a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Delaware. Research interests include improving gait and function for individuals with lower limb amputation. He received his PhD from Stony Brook University.

Douglas Smith, MD, specializes in orthopaedic trauma, surgery and rehabilitation. He is the lead editor for the third edition of the AAOS Atlas of Amputations and Limb Deficiencies. He serves as consultant to the U.S. Military Amputee Centers and has published numerous papers and book chapters on amputation and limb loss.

Kristin Smith, CO, currently serves as lead orthotist in the spinal division of Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, MN. In collaboration with the University of Minnesota, she is a lead investigator on multiple scoliosis research projects, including a long-term AIS outcome study.

Zach Thurow, CPO, specializes in traumatic spinal bracing at Winkley O&P in Minneapolis, MN. He works closely with the Neurosurgery team at Hennepin County Medical Center in downtown Minneapolis, providing custom and off the shelf spinal solutions for traumatic spinal injuries.

Naz Wahab, MD, is a Board-certified physician and a Fellow of the American Professional Wound Care Association.

Dr. Wahab and her team of providers offer the Las Vegas area modern, evidence-based, and advanced wound healing modalities. New to the Las Vegas market, they have created a clinical research institute for patients that have been unable to heal with other treatment modalities.

Sarah Moudy, PhD, is a postdoctoral research associate with the human movement performance lab at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, TX. Her research interests include the biomechanics of injuries in clinical populations and the advancement of clinical translation research.

Matthew Wernke, PhD, is an Applied Research Engineer for WillowWood. He received his PhD from the University of South Florida. Currently, he leads several federally funded research and R&D projects.

Marlo Ortiz, CP(M), is the National coordinator of Uniting Frontiers Regional Board, International Representative of ISPO Mexico, and Board Member of ISPO International. He is Past President of the Mexican O&P Association. He is a recipient of AAOP’s “Clinical Creativity” award and Blatchford’s award for Best Prosthetic Technology at ISPO World Congress.

Shane Wurdeman, PhD, CP, FAAOP, holds a degree in physics, a Master's in prosthetics and orthotics, and a PhD in biomechanics. He is currently Director of Clinical Research with Hanger Clinic’s Department of Clinical and Scientific Affairs. He is based out of Houston, TX.

Keynote Address What Has Changed in American Health Care, and How Will the Pandemic Affect the Future?

Michael Lovdal, PhD Dr. Lovdal obtained his MBA and doctorate at Harvard Business School, then joined its faculty teaching corporate strategy. He later moved to the Sloan School at MIT. Mike then began his consulting career at Oliver Wyman, where over a 35-year career, he undertook projects for clients in consumer products, media and technology. During his final years at Oliver Wyman, Mike concentrated solely on healthcare serving providers, payers, pharma companies and public health organizations.

Today, he serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia Business School co-teaching a course on “Innovative Models in Global Healthcare.”

Beverly Cusick, PT, MS, NDT, COF/BOC Clinical practitioners commonly use the term “muscle tone” to describe a different condition and use various methods to attempt to quantify it. We will clarify the definition, relate movement strategies to the development of typical ankle function and equinus deformity, review clinical assessment procedures for hamstrings length and ankle dorsiflexion range of motion, and more.

Michael Lovdal, PhD Dr. Lovdal obtained his MBA and doctorate at Harvard Business School, then joined its faculty teaching corporate strategy. He later moved to the Sloan School at MIT. Mike then began his consulting career at Oliver Wyman, where over a 35-year career, he undertook projects for clients in consumer products, media and technology.

During his final years at Oliver Wyman, Mike concentrated solely on healthcare serving providers, payers, pharma companies and public health organizations. Today, he serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia Business School co-teaching a course on “Innovative Models in Global Healthcare.”

High Intensity Gait Training for Stroke Patients: The Neuroplastic Principles Behind this Evidence-Based Treatment Modality, Comparison to Conventional Physical Therapy and Effect on Orthotic Management (C3-B) Caitlin Deom, PT, DPT John Frederick, CPO/L High Intensity Gait Training (HIGT) is an evidence-based treatment modality that utilizes principles of neuroplasticity to improve the locomotor function of stroke patients. We will present an overview of these principles and the research supporting HIGT as a more effective approach in comparison to conventional stroke therapy. By understanding HIGT and the measures used to implement it, orthotists are better equipped to evaluate and formulate treatment plans.

Naz Wahab, MD The loss of a limb can be a physical, emotional, and psychological stress. For patients' dealing with these issues, delays in surgical wound healing can lead to an even more devastating stress with the patient's continued inability to perform their Activities of Daily Living and further delays rehabilitation and recovery. Learning the importance of the wound healing continuum and the role it plays in prosthetic and orthotic fittings is quite important for swift recovery. We will learn about microangiopathy and peripheral neuropathy and its role in wound healing. In addition, we will address the importance of skin temperature, pressure points and skin tensile strength in surgical wound healing. Lastly, we will introduce new diagnostic technologies and how we can utilize these advancements for sustained wound healing.

As the central link between man and technology, it has to fulfill biomechanical aspects as well as specific embedding characteristics. Some of them can be discussed, others are almost irrefutable, since they are based on clearly comprehensible physical laws. Experts in this care area report on the latest approaches to high performance socket designs in transfemoral prosthetics. Different methods of shape detection from plaster cast to digital scan are considered as well as the critical debate on the design of the sockets entry level (Ischial containment, Ischio-Ramal containment, subischial technique).

At the same time, concrete approaches for the improvement of the sockets guidance behavior will be shown, as well as measures with influence on the reduction of stump-socketpseudarthrosis and the painful stump.

Understanding the health system for limb loss can serve as a common interactive platform to link patients, caregivers, providers, prosthetists, as well as manufacturers, payers, researchers, government, and advocacy groups. The Limb Loss Rehabilitation Continuum Framework can unify all these perspectives. It highlights the vital role of each stakeholder, the importance of coordination between stakeholders and care settings, and the link between proximal actions and distal outcomes. During this session you’ll hear from three stakeholder perspectives—the surgical perspective , the prosthetist perspective, and the researcher perspective as examples of how the Framework unifies the stakeholders.

Orthotic management of the spine can be very complex. During this session we will break it down and take a look at today’s treatments. This symposium will include perspective from a few of the primary treatment centers in the Twin Cities.

Our speakers will address what is being done to manage traumatic spine, post-operative spine, and scoliosis. Through looking at current practice, diagnoses, and protocol we hope to share a clear perspective on how to appropriately manage the spine with an orthosis. In addition, an update on the current ISPO spine short course and other spinal education opportunities will be shared. All of this will be concluded with an opportunity for discussion during a question and answer session.

A retrospective chart review was performed on 253 infants who underwent orthotic treatment for deformational brachycephaly. The rate of correction to the cephalic index will be examined based on the age at which an infant began orthotic treatment and an equation will be presented which may be used to estimate the expected treatment duration for these infants based on their age and clinical goals.

Boston Brace Baby Initial Results: A Novel Approach to Treatment of Infantile Scoliosis (C9-B)

This presentation outlines initial results of a new brace design specifically for the management of infantile idiopathic scoliosis. It eliminates the need for patients to undergo multiple rounds of anesthesia, thus reducing associated patient risk and cost to families.

The findings suggest, mobility outcome of adults with lower limb loss may be estimated using their age, sex, amputation level, and time since amputation. Thus, allowing clinicians to anticipate mobilitylevel changes for preventive screening and prosthetic prescription.

Sex-specific Relationships between Pain and Pressure Sensitivity Post-Amputation (C16-F) Emma Beisheim, PT, DPT Following a lower-limb amputation, prosthesis use exposes the residual limb to constant pressure during mobility. Phantom and/or residual limb pain may increase sensitivity to pressure within the residual limb, ultimately reducing prosthesis tolerance; however, it is unknown if the relationships between pain and pressure sensitivity are similar between males and females. This presentation identifies sex-specific differences in pressure sensitivity among individuals with a lower-limb amputation, highlighting potential contributions to reduced prosthesis tolerance and use.

Prosthetic and Orthotic Clinician Practitioner Population Survey (C22-D) Gerald Stark, PhD, MSEM, CPO/L, FAAOP(D) In 2002 Nielsen projected that growth rates indicated that less than 61 percent of orthotic wearers and 64 percent of prosthetic wearers could be served by 2020 at the current rate of growth. This data greatly influenced how we viewed the number of schools and graduates that were needed in the future as well as the role of ancillary support personnel such as assistants, technicians, and residents. From the statistical answers and significant relationships there appeared to be two distinct groups within the sample group that disagreed as to if there was a greater need for practitioner and schools.

Options in clinical decision making focus on a variety of interface and suspension options, liner replacement, evaluation interface use, and socket replacement . As a result, the distribution of liner use versus non-liner use, interface replacement, and evaluation interface use may also have changed.

Also the question can be raised if these choices are iatrogenically dependent on years of experience and self-assessed proficiency of the prosthetic practitioner.

The Clinical Outcomes of Using Perforated Liners to Combat Excessive Sweating in Patients with Lower Limb Amputation (C23-C) Ana Gallego, BEng, MSc, ProfIMMM Review the outcomes of patients with a history of skin problems on their residual limb who used a perforated silicone liner for a minimum of 12 months.

Development, Fabrication, and Modeling of Custom Transtibial Prosthetic Socket Inserts (C23-E) Meredith Owen, Department of Bioengineering at Clemson University A novel prosthetic socket insert will be presented to combat high pressure gradients at the residual limb-socket interface. Custom offloading can be specified through prosthetist prescription and verified with finite element analysis. Inserts are 3D printed and incorporated into traditional socket fabrication.

The Effect of 3 Different Above the Knee Prosthetic Socket Interface Designs on Heat and Perspiration; A Randomized Clinical Trial (C23-F) Jason Kahle, MSMS, CPO, LPO Hear a comparison of three different socket designs; Ischial ramus containment, dynamic sockets with flexible interface, and rigid frame windows and Sub-Ischial sockets; and review their impact in experience with heat and perspiration.

Enhancing the PLUS-M Item Bank to Reduce Ceiling Effects in Highly-active Prosthesis Users (C25-H) Brian Hafner, PhD Surveys developed for lower limb prosthesis users often exhibit a ceiling effect and may not be suitable for people with high mobility. The PLUS-M item bank was enhanced with new items to address ceiling effects and improve measurement of active individuals, including athletes and service members with lower limb amputation. This presentation will summarize efforts to identify new items, integrate these items into the original PLUS-M item bank, and verify performance of the enhanced PLUS-M instrument.

Review a study that suggests patients who suffer from sound knee, amputated side knee, and low-back pain when using a passive prosthetic foot may experience significant and clinically meaningful pain relief with a powered ankle-foot component.

Beverly Cusick, PT, MS, NDT, COF/BOC Clinical practitioners commonly use the term “muscle tone” to describe different conditions and use various methods to attempt to quantify it. In the didactic portion of this program, the facilitator clarifies the currently accepted definition of human resting lower limb muscle tone in terms of the length-tension relationship with particular attention to the hamstring and triceps surae muscles. She relates movement strategies to the development of typical ankle function and equinus deformity, and reviews clinical assessment procedures for hamstrings length and ankle dorsiflexion (DF) range of motion (ROM) in detail with video recorded demonstrations. She introduces the DF end range at R1A in the hypertonic triceps surae muscle group and explains its relevance in standing and walking. She brings the assessment findings to a discussion of implications for setting the ankle angle in an AFO and for detecting and reporting orthotic management outcomes. Tickets are $35 per person. Jennifer Lučarević, PT, DPT, PhD Candidate Mark Muller, MS, CPO, FAAOP Assistive technology including functional bracing (orthotics) and prosthetics are frequently utilized in adaptive sports. Communication between the athlete, parent, coach, and healthcare providers is critical to ensuring that a sport orthosis or prosthesis device meets the specific demands of the sport and is allowed within the sport rules and regulations. This session will introduce healthcare providers to opportunities to engage with competitive and recreational adaptive sport programs.

The session will present ideas for creating custom orthotic and prosthetic that meet the sport-specific demands of standing athletes, using specific examples from cycling and athletics (track & field).

The session will conclude with a panel of athletes sharing insights on how we collaborate to improve sport performance. Tickets are $35 per person.

Attendees are expected to treat everyone with respect and to be considerate of the multitude of views and opinions that are different than their own.
