AMA MOTORCYCLE HALL OF FAMER, AND THE ONLY RIDER TO WIN AN AMA SUPERCROSS, MOTOCROSS AND ROAD RACE NATIONAL
With Honda’s 1973 CR250 Elsinore and 1983 V45 Interceptor celebrating 50- and 40-year anniversaries this year, it made sense to have the Grand Marshal be someone with direct connection to both motocross and production roadracing, and Honda Motor Co., of course.
All of which makes Jack-of-all-trades Steve Wise the perfect choice.
Wise is perhaps the most accomplished multi-genre
motorcycle racer in history, posting AMA National-class wins in motocross, AMA Supercross and road racing — the latter accomplished on these hallowed Mid-Ohio grounds back in 1983, the year the V45 Interceptor debuted.
That’d be like MX superstar Eli Tomac winning a MotoAmerica AMA Superbike race… or MotoAmerica’s Jake Gagne winning an AMA Supercross event! Crazy, right?
The fact that Wise podiumed in his very first Grand National dirt track appearance, and also won the legendary ABC Wide World of Sports Superbikers event at Carlsbad Raceway twice, in ’80 and ’81, speaks volumes about his prodigious skills on a racing motorcycle.
Wise started riding in his early teens on Pentons with his father, Gary, and then turned to racing. “When I was 19,” he said, “On July 4, 1976, I won the 125cc National in Kaiser Ridge, Md., on my Jimmy Strait-tuned privateer CR125 Elsinore from my father’s Honda dealership, beating the likes of AMA Hall of Famers Marty Smith and Bob Hannah.”
Between ages 19 and 26, Wise was prolific, moving from Team Honda motocross to Team Honda roadracing on AMA Superbikes and Formula One machinery alongside roadracing legends like AMA Hall of Famers Freddie Spen cer and Mike Baldwin.
“I’m honored to be this year’s Grand Marshal,” Wise said, “especially at the track on which I won my first AMA Superbike event. I remember that weekend in ’83 like it was yesterday. To be back here and enjoy all the fun motorcycle stuff that happens at VMD will be memorable, I’m sure!”

Don’t miss the opportunity to check out a few of the absolute legend motorcycles of the 1970s and ’80s in our AMA Hall of Fame tent in the infield, along with Grand Marshal and AMA Hall of Famer Steve Wise, a guy who raced them during his AMA Hall of Fame career and who’ll be doing autograph signings and chalk talks daily on the infield AMA Soundstage.
On display will be Honda’s 1973 CR250M Elsinore, which turns 50 years old this year, and which changed the game of motocross overnight; its CR125 Elsinore little brother; Honda’s 1983 VF750F Interceptor, which turns 40 this year
and which rocked the sport motorcycle world when it debuted, along with some racing VF750F variants — including Freddie Spencer’s 1985 Daytona-winning VF, owned by Superbike collector Brian O’Shea. We’ll even have a 1973 Honda XR75 on display, which became the minibike of the 1970s, and which also turns 50 this season.
All of this — the bikes, Grand Marshal Steve Wise, Saturday’s Bike Show, plus booths for AMA Membership, AMA Merchandise, Raffle Bike displays and tickets, a silent auction and much more — will happen in the Mid-Ohio infield, just over the front-straightaway bridge, so come say hello. You’re bound to see legends all day long!
