AmericanHort & Horticultural Research Institute Announce the HRI Leadership Academy

In March, AmericanHort and the Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) announced the launch of The HRI Leadership Academy, a one-year leadership program designed to develop the skills the green industry needs to perform better, grow faster, and prepare for the future.

Consisting of in-person training sessions and virtual online classes and meetings, the HRI Leadership Academy addresses the industry’s need for leadership development serving both current and future leaders.

“HRI understands that a healthy and robust industry is one with connected leaders that have a positive impact on their businesses, their industry, and their communities,” said Alan Jones, HRI Board President and President of Manor View Farms, Monkton, MD. “The HRI board embraces the opportunity to present a program that

serves as a leadership growth platform for all levels of our industry.”

Participants will grow personally and professionally, through leadership and business skills training, engagement with a green industry network, and completion of a real-world project.

“I had the opportunity to participate in a similar program through my company.

As someone with years of industry experience, this proved an incredible learning experience. I further honed my business analysis and negotiation skills and I put these learnings into practice on the job immediately, helping me be more effective in my work,” said Cole Mangum, Vice President operations for Bell Nursery in Maryland and AmericanHort Board Chairman.

Decker’s Nursery A Focus on Sanitation Groveport, OH

Decker’s Nursery is a wholesale nursery specializing in large material containers, commodity, and licensed plants. They sell liner material and finished stock across the United States and to two Canadian provinces.

They also propagate more than 1.5 million cuttings and 250,000 grafts a year and are a founding participant in LEAP—Labor, Efficiency, Automation in Production—program. Decker’s is a strong industry leader who just celebrated their 101st anniversary and are proud to be on their third generation of family ownership.

Decker’s highest volume plant in production is boxwood— which has led to them been an active partner in developing strategies to mitigate the impact of the fungal disease known as boxwood blight. Unsurprisingly, Decker’s has been concerned about the spread of boxwood blight for years and have taken steps to ensure the future of the boxwood shrub as a continued staple in the industry. Strategies such as growing plants with resistant genetics, like those found in the NewGen® boxwood varieties ‘Freedom’ and ‘Independence’, and a strong dedication to sanitation are two of the top ways to control this disease.

Upon arrival, a series of questions are asked which helps Decker’s determine the level of sanitation needed in each situation. As visitors enter the main building, they step onto a Zero-tol sanitation mat to sanitize the bottom and sides of their shoes. Their lower body is also misted with a Zero-tol solution. In addition, Decker’s provides visitors protective gear to be worn such as booties or, for someone who may have been exposed to plants outside of Decker’s Nursery, a full coverall.

Boxwood blight is difficult, if not impossible, to eradicate in an established nursery so the best way to fight back­­—is to never contract it in the first place. Decker’s follows strict sanitation rules for both their employees and visitors to the farm.

These protocols help Decker’s eliminate and mitigate contaminations threats. Their stay clean, grow clean mentality is evidenced in the quality of their plants and their dedication to maintaining boxwoods as a staple to the industry for years to come.

During a delivery to the nursery, any equipment used to unload the visiting vehicle is sanitized immediately after use by a Decker’s staff member. In addition, Decker’s utility and personal delivery vehicles are also sprayed with Zero-tol after any use that may have resulted in contamination.

Market Outlook: Rising Costs Squeeze Green Industry Margins Presented by Dr. Charlie Hall, AmericanHort Chief Economist News of inflation comes as no surprise, but a detailed understanding of your cost structure is critical for protecting your profitability in uncertain times.

Enter Dr. Charlie Hall. His annual Index of Prices Paid by Growers documents the inflationary pressures on the cost of propagating, producing, and shipping plants to customers, and helps growers forecast where input costs may be headed in 2022.

The report came out mid-March and has many excerpts worth highlighting: • The tracked costs in 2021 increased about 9.6% over what they were in 2020.

• It is anticipated that input costs in 2022 will rise by an additional 5.3% because of the continuing supply chain disruptions and strong demand manufacturers and distributors face from growers in the industry.

• The leading input cost increases are for: – Containers and other plastics – Freight and trucking – Propagative materials – Fertilizers – Fuel and energy – Labor • Given the findings of the Index of Prices Paid by Growers, it is clear that inflationary pressures have the potential to erode margins for green industry growers and that there will continue to be increases in the costs of major inputs they utilize during production, particularly labor.

Advocacy Springs Forward

Signs of spring abound as daylight lengthens, the dawn chorus of birds returns, and budding foliage and flowers begin to color the landscape.

Another sign is the increasingly delirious pace around nurseries and garden centers as you cultivate and deliver the bounty of spring’s growing season to consumers around the country. Amid the rush to the seasonal peak for our industry, the advocacy team continues to serve as your eyes, ears, and voice in Washington, DC. Let’s briefly review a few ways we’re working on your behalf as you surf the breaking wave of spring business.

H-2B Cap Relief

“Omnibus” Spending Bill On Capitol Hill, Congress is finalizing the consolidated government funding bill known colloquially as the “omnibus,” which may become the most significant piece of legislation enacted this year. Among the “wins” for industry secured therein, the bill provides robust funding for the Floriculture and Nursery Research Initiative to support industry-directed research priorities in nursery and floriculture production.

AmericanHort and partners in the specialty crop community also secured a significant increase in funding—the first in more than a decade—for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s IR-4 project, which develops data needed to facilitate registration of new crop protection tools.

The omnibus, as introduced, also makes strides toward H-2B cap relief, with language enabling the Department of Homeland Security to oblige requests from AmericanHort and our coalition partners to release additional visas for the second half of the year. Last month, a bipartisan letter organized by Senators Angus King (I-ME) and Mike Rounds (R-SD) called on the Administration to fully tap its authority under the appropriations language to release 44,716 additional visas for fiscal year 2022. Thanks in large part to grassroots efforts by AmericanHort members and our partners in the H2B Workforce Coalition, which we co-chair, the letter garnered signatures of 35 Senators. Our work continues as we engage the Administration to issue the additional visas and expedite processing as we approach the April 1 start date for the second half the fiscal year.

Laying Foundation for Next Farm Bill Earlier this year, Congress kicked off its review of farm policy to see what works and what needs refinement ahead of writing a new Farm Bill, which comes due for renewal in 2023. Among other policy opportunities in the bill, AmericanHort will

provide Congress with grower perspectives on strengthening crop insurance, disaster relief, and research programs. AmericanHort will also help guide consensus-driven development of Farm Bill recommendations from the specialty crop sector to Congress as a steering committee member of the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance, a national coalition of more than 120 grower organizations.

Tax Guidance for the Green Industry It was a tumultuous winter for tax policy.

Proposals to increase government spending in response to economic headwinds were paired with potentially harmful tax increases, which AmericanHort and coalition partners successfully opposed. Meanwhile, we expanded our strategic partnership with K·Coe Isom, the nation’s leading agriculture consulting and tax accounting firm, to help members navigate 2021 tax filing, incentives for business investments, and sales tax laws relevant to interstate and e-commerce sellers. As an additional benefit of premium membership, we are connecting businesses to tax experts with K·Coe Isom for one-onone tax consultations to help best position their business and assets.

Horticultural Research Institute Announces 2022 Grant Awards

The Horticultural Research Institute (HRI), the foundation of AmericanHort, proudly announces the portfolio of research projects receiving 2022 funding.

Projects reflect HRI’s research priority areas of quantifying plant benefits, creating innovative solutions, gathering consumer insights, and producing practical and actionable solutions. HRI is providing a total of $417,039 in financial support this year.

"Now celebrating its 60th year, HRI is more relevant to the success of the horticultural industry than ever before,” said Alan Jones (Manor View Farm, Monkton, MD), HRI president. "The projects selected for 2022 funding represent a diverse selection of research topics showcasing ‘The Power of Plants.’ To date, HRI has supported $9.5 million in research grants and scholarships and looks forward to expanded funding as the endowment continues to grow."

The Horticultural Research Institute’s mission is to direct, fund, promote and communicate horticulture research.

Supporting research that challenges current methods and bridges the divide between businesses and the consumer is exactly how HRI helps build prosperous businesses, advance the green industry and fulfill its core vision.

Setting SMART Goals in the Green Industry

With the recent boom in consumer interest in plants and plant-adjacent products, many in the green industry have found their businesses thriving and growing. Through the rush to grow, sell, ship, and move product, businesses have also hired new people, created new strategies for distribution (like online sales and curbside pickup), and started reaching customers in new and different ways. With so much change, it can be easy to go with the flow and, while flexibility is important, it’s also critical to take a moment to breathe and assess the strategic direction of the company. This is where setting SMART goals come in.

During the second class in the AmericanHort Marketing Mastery Series Ryan McEnaney of Bailey Nurseries taught attendees about building a strategic communication plan. One of the topics he emphasized was how to set SMART goals—a practice that all levels of an organization benefit from, not just marketing.

Goals were also a conversation topic at the February call of the AmericanHort HR Peer Sharing Group. HR leaders from across the country shared advice, challenges, and successes with goal setting in their companies.

Along with helping define a clear vision and strategic direction for the company, leaders should also consider companywide goal setting as a way to invest in their employees. One HR professional from a nursery shared that, “Goals aren’t just good for the company, they are a way to make sure your employees are taken care of. Goals are an opportunity to build your employees up to their full potential and they start the conversation that gets into incentives, employees feeling valued, bonuses based off profitability, etc.”

The importance of making goal-setting collaborative was also discussed. If the goals are just handed to a person, it can be hard to get employee buy-in—especially if goals have not been utilized in your organization before. However, when an individual is part of the process for developing their personal goals, there is a feeling of ownership and tends to result in more initiative to reach or exceed the goal that was set. It’s also important to create transparency, which in turn creates understanding and urgency, especially between teams in larger organizations.

“It's important to have company-wide goals and also these employee-set goals to help with the feeling of ownership,” said another HR professional from a greenhouse/ nursery supply operation. “In addition, accountability is another important aspect of the SMART goal process. “Our leadership meets with our team leads monthly to hear how they are keeping on track with our company goals. And employees are met with at least twice a year to check in on individual goals.”

For a company just starting out with goals, Microsoft Excel was recommended as a good platform to get started on. For a company looking to take the next step, many of the payroll softwares that you are currently using also have a goal-setting functions as a free or paid add-on to your existing account.

Top 5 Tips for Successfully Recruiting in 2022

Attracting people to work in any position has never been more difficult.

In February, Neal Glatt from GrowTheBench.com helped AmericanHort members get a recruiting edge by discussing modern approaches to hiring in the webinar Successfully Recruiting in 2022. Attendees learned how to write compelling job postings, how to use the latest recruiting technology, where to find workers, and what’s working for other green industry companies.

Post the hourly rate or salary in the job description. Don’t waste your own or your applicant’s time by not giving all of the relevant information in the beginning. In some states, it has even become illegal to post a job without a pay range.

Promote jobs where you applicants are. Posting your job to online sites is still very important, but almost equally important is engaging in alternative tactics. These tactics should include posting to your social media, having an employee referral program, and engaging in offline recruiting at places like career fairs, trucks, yard signs and business cards with QR codes.

Respond fast. Never take more than 24 hours to respond. The longer you take to respond, the more likely one of the other companies the applicant has contacted will offer them a job.

In the webinar, Neal taught us that to be relevant to job seekers in 2022, we need to dramatically change. Here are our top five tips for creating a modern, successful recruitment strategy: 1.

Write your job description in the same tone of voice you write your consumer-facing materials. You are trying push your open position to a group that has lots of options. Make sure you are taking a marketing-based approach to the words and tone of voice you use.
