The Imnaha River is a 73.3-mile-long tributary of the Snake River in the U.S. state of Oregon. Flowing generally east near the headwaters and then north through Wallowa County, the entire river is designated Wild and Scenic. It follows a geologic fault to the Snake River, and in addition to land in the Wallowa–Whitman National Forest and private land, its corridor includes parts of three special management areas: The Eagle Cap Wilderness, Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, and Hells Canyon Scenic Byway. The Imnaha flows by the unincorporated community of Imnaha, the only settlement along its course, and enters the Snake River roughly 4 miles from the larger river’s confluence with the Salmon River of Idaho and 192 miles from its confluence with the Columbia River. Originating from the headwaters of the South Fork of the Imnaha River near Cusick Mountain in the Eagle Cap Wilderness, this 77-mile-long river flows through a mixture of Forest Service and private lands, eventually emptying into the Snake River. Its outstandingly remarkable values include recreation, scenery, fisheries, wildlife, historic/prehistoric, vegetation/botanical and traditional value/lifestyles adaptation.

The river corridor supports unique plant communities and ecosystem diversity. Starting at 8,000 feet and descending to 950 feet, the river corridor contains most of the ecosystems found on the National Forest. Federally listed plants of interest include Wallowa primrose, fraternal paintbrush, Oregon oleander, MacFarlane’s four o’clock, Geyer’s onion and Hazel’s leptodactylon. The Imnaha River Canyon exhibits the economic and social history of the region and the American West. The Nez Perce and later Euro-Americans adapted to its climatic and geographic conditions, and the traditional Western farm and ranch lifestyle is still active today.

Approx. $5,277.71 • Access • From Enterprise take Hwy 82 to Joseph, Oregon. After you enter Joseph, look for the junction with the Imnaha Highway (State Hwy 350) and signs indicating Imnaha/Halfway. Turn left (east) onto the Imnaha Highway (350). Over the next 30 miles, you will gradually descend over 2,200' into the Imnaha River Canyon. This country is very different than the Wallowa’s. You will enter a zone of high grasslands, rock cliffs, and mountain valleys. The Imnaha area was historically an important wintering site for the Nez Perce and their herds of horses. Later, cattlemen took advantage of the warmer environment of the canyon to graze their herds.

County •

Wallowa County is a county in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,008, making it Oregon’s fourth-least populous county. Its county seat is Enterprise. According to Oregon Geographic Names, the origins of the county’s name are uncertain, with the most likely explanation being it is derived from the Nez Perce term for a structure of stakes (a weir) used in fishing. An alternative explanation is that Wallowa is derived from a Nez Perce word for “winding water”. The journals of Lewis and Clark Expedition record the name of the Wallowa River as Wil-le-wah.

Wallowa County is part of the eight-county definition of Eastern Oregon.

Imnaha is an unincorporated community at the confluence of Big Sheep Creek and the Imnaha River in Wallowa County, Oregon, United States. Its elevation is 1,978 feet. Oregon Route 350 connects Imnaha to the nearest incorporated city, Joseph, Oregon, 30 miles to the west. Imnaha is best known as the gateway to the Hat Point scenic lookout on Hells Canyon at the Snake River. The name Imnaha means “land ruled over by Imna”; Imna was a local Native American subchief. The post office in Imnaha opened January 4, 1885, but the townsite was not established until 1901; it was platted in 1902.

Imnaha is the easternmost settlement in the state of Oregon.

• Education • The Imnaha school is located about 30 miles from Joseph, and currently has 9 students in grades K-8. Teacher, Shari Warnock, is a native of Imnaha and loves providing such individualized instruction to her students. While the school may be small, it is filled with love and a great sense of community. Shari and the students, along with the help of parents, often host events and activities for all of the Imnaha community. The events are always well attended, and a great time!
