Almost six years ago, Hannah Sufrin found herself frustrated with the upscale modest fashion market. Instead of feeling resentful about her options for covering up, she put pen to paper and decided to be that change she wanted to see, drawing beautiful and glamorous styles for herself and a few consumers. She started with seven different designs and made just three of each size, selling exclusively on Instagram in the beginning. If you’re familiar with House of Lancry, you can understand that they took off like wildfire. Before long, Sufrin started a website, then a store in Brooklyn and then expanded to a store at American Dream nearly two years ago now. When she heard about The Address, she was instantly in. She decided to create a limited collection just for The Address actually, that wouldn’t be available in other stores or online. With chic, feminine silhouettes, bold colors and shapes and statement-making accessories, House of Lancry nestled into its home at The Address, becoming a draw for countless consumers. When Tali Schwartz was in elementary school she was obsessed with hair accessories. She would play around and make them with her friends and then sell them for tzedaka. When she was an adult, married with two young children, the same passion reignited within her. She thought it would be fun to decorate a headband, something she couldn’t find out there already. It went better than expected. Soon, as she wore it, her friends started asking to make them one as well. Then, things snowballed. Her passion for accessories slowly but surely turned into a business.
Tali was living in Boston at the time and created items out of her closet. She then moved into a bedroom, then a basement and now has factories that produce her gorgeous stuff. In the beginning, she was a one-woman show. To order, you would need to send a direct message on Instagram and every single piece of the process had to go through her. As she grew, she moved to Shopify and would set up pop-up shops in people’s homes to gain more exposure. Now, Tal is one of the highlights of The Address at American Dream. Initially, before The Address opened, she had her own storefront in the mall. This actually came about because of her own tenacity and action. She would drive by the mall all the time — at this point she was living in Passaic — and thought it would be cool to set up shop there. So she’s the one that called management at American Dream and made her own brick and mortar space happen. “My friends from elementary school think it’s so funny I do this now,” Tali says, but when looking through her stuff, it all seems so natural. What sets Tali’s designs apart is that they really feel special. They have that unique creative flair that make you feel like someone made the piece just for you.
