20 years ago, a group of Chianina breeders envisioned an event that would offer elite genetic opportunities to anyone interested, with the goal of not only raising funds for the ACA, but also paying a large “winner takes all” premium to the top placing animals from these genetic packages! In 2002, the culmination of this Egg Extravaganza event took place at the ACA National Show in Louisville where the resulting calves from the elite genetic packages were shown, and the winner of the female and bull divisions took home the prize money of well over $15,000!

With the vision of Larry Garrett, the idea of the Egg Extravaganza has been reborn! Dig deep, consider consigning elite genetic packages, team up with fellow breeders to form syndicates that allow you to purchase these top caliber genetics at top dollar prices, and stake your claim for the high dollar prize money in 2022!

• To raise $150,000-$200,000, with the money raised used to market and promote Chianina cattle, as well as support the junior programs of the AJCA. • Each lot will include 3 embryos of the same mating • Divisions for Chiangus, Chianina & Fullblood • ALL embryos will be DNA tested for parentage; resulting calves must be registered with the ACA & parentage verified • All resulting calves must be entered in the 2022 National Show • One pregnancy per lot guaranteed • Egg Extravaganza auction will be held in conjunction with 2020 NJHS in Lima, Ohio • Breeders encouraged to create syndicates to increase buying power & create excitement • Embryo packages will start at $3,000 • Egg Extravaganza show will be at the 2022 NAILE, immediately following the National Show • A 3-division show will be offered (Italian Fullblood, Chianina & Chiangus) • Half of the money raised from the sale of embryo packages will be paid back as premiums in the show.

f you didn’t have a chance to attend the annual membership meeting in Louisville in November, you missed a great opportunity to catch up on the inner workings of the ACA. For this issue, I’ll devote this column to recapping the information shared at that meeting.

First, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Heather Counts for all of the effort that she devoted to the annual membership meeting. Meetings, and particularly annual meetings, require advance planning, preparation, and time. Thanks to Heather for making sure that no detail was overlooked. Secondly, I would like to thank Dustin Hurlbut, and Justin and Kaylee Tracy for their input and advice (together with Heather) in selecting favors and door prizes for everyone that attended the annual meeting. They were a big hit!!!

Finally, we provided an added incentive for juniors who showed a Chiangus or Chianina heifer at the North American.

Every junior that checked in a heifer received an ACA labeled bucket, filled with fliers promoting the 2020 National Junior Heifer Show, 2020 Regional Heifer Shows and the Steer Rewards Program. Hopefully, the next time these juniors decide what breed of heifer to buy, they’ll remember the advantage of showing a Chi! We began the Annual Meeting by presenting national awards. CK Cattle (Chuck and Katie Madaris and family, Hope Hull, Ala.) were selected for the prestigious Breeder of the Year award. Unfortunately, last minute family responsibilities made their participation impossible. Chuck requested that we delay the presentation of this award to 2020. We were happy to comply with his request.

Schlechter Bros. Farms, Polo, S.D., was selected as the Commercial Cattleman of the Year. The Schlechters run 800 commercial Chiangus cows and breed all of them to Chiangus bulls. They finish their own calves and also purchase 1,500 yearlings and another 700 calves to feed out. Congratulations to Schlechters for their selection as the ACA Commercial Cattleman of the Year!

The 2019 ACA Promoter of the Year Award went to Oak Barn Beef, Hannah and Don Esch and family. Hannah has created a unique entrepreneurship project from the family tradition of raising Chiangus cattle. Don tests his cows for the tenderness and marbling genes, and mates them accordingly. Hannah advertises aggressively on social media and ships dry-aged, vacuum packed, frozen beef all over the United States. Early on, she sometimes had trouble keeping up with the demand. The Esch Family and Oak Barn Beef have been featured in magazine articles and Hannah has been recognized for her innovation and creativity as an entrepreneur.

Since 2012, the ACA has been recognizing 40 year-members. This year, the following breeders were recognized. (Biographies of the 40 year members are found in this issue of the Journal.)

The Show Animal of the Year is awarded to the bull and heifer in both the Chianina and Chiangus breeds that have accrued the greatest number of All-American Points. Photos and full information is found in the National Show coverage of this issue.

Keith Schrick and Brad Winegardner were recognized for

six years of service to the ACA Board of Directors. Both breeders have been extremely dedicated, dependable, contributing members of the Board. We appreciate their service. Dr. Rob Sheets completed his term on the Board of Directors and chose not to seek re-election. However, he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Eric Walker, who resigned.

Three new members joined the Board and were introduced to the membership for the first time. These board members include Derek Evans from Kentucky, Segayle Foster from Texas, and Tyler Winegardner from Ohio.

The addition of these three will certain change the composition of the board, particularly in terms of the average age of board members. We look forward to capitalizing on their optimism and fresh new perspective.

Three “straw poll, group activities” were conducted next. These activities provided meeting participants with an opportunity to give their opinion and perspective, while also getting out of their seats and stretching their legs. (I had alerted Heather beforehand so she captured the activities pictorially.)

The ACA is an association made up of tremendous diversity and differences. Our differences are not only in the types of cattle that we breed, raise and produce, but also in the philosophies of our breeders and members. As a starting point, I thought it would be interesting to articulate some of the stark difference facing our association and its membership, and let the group respond to each. To prepare for these activities I had created a number line on the back wall of the room.

I was very happy to see that every single person participated in all three activities.

The first question posed to the group was: Using the number line on the back wall, (ranging from 0 to 100%) please stand nearest the percentage / fraction that best represents “High Percentage Chianina.”

This was a very interesting activity. Ryan and Crystal Dunklau stood at 6.25% (1/16) with Derek Evans and Robin Rutt standing resolute at 12.5% (1/8). At the other end of the number line, three members of the Jim Johnson family lined up at 75% (3/4) with Stephanie Sexton and Marna Higgins finding their places at 62.5% (5/8) and Ed Miller, Jill Miller, and Terry Comer lined up between 62.5% and 75%. The

bulk of those in attendance fell between 18.75% (3/16) and 37.5% (3/8).

The second question posed to the group was: Using the number line on the back wall (ranging from 1 to 100%), please stand nearest the number that best represents the value/importance that you place on performance testing.

This activity was fascinating! In some cases, people swapped ends of the timeline! It was gratifying (at least to me) to see the number of people lined up at the 100% mark. The overwhelming majority aligned themselves from 50% to 100%. The single most popular number (mode) for this activity was “100%”.

The final question asked of the group was: Using the number line on the back wall, indicate whether you believe that Chianina cattle are primarily a “Show Breed”, a “Commercial Breed” or some combination. (Note: for this activity, “Show Breed” supporters lined up on the south end (marked by 0) and the “Commercial Breed” lined up on the north end JANUARY/FEBRUARY | CHIANINA JOURNAL |

(marked by 100). Therefore, for those that believe that Chianina/Chiangus cattle are a perfect mixture, they would line up on the 50% mark.)

In this activity, the bulk of people aligned themselves from 50% to just over 75% (favoring “Commercial Breed.”) What was interesting to me was how many couples disagreed on their emphasis.

John and Debbie Woodruff stood together; virtually every other couple was split, notably Johnsons, Satrees, Comers, Evans, Higgins, and Sheets. We are a group of independent thinkers, and there is strength and value in that!!

The very first “Premium Chianina Beef” sign was presented to Jill Miller, to display in the Talmo Market and Grill, in Talmo, Ga. Talmo Market and Grill is the only restaurant in the United States serving Premium Chianina Beef, which Talmo Ranch produces and owns from conception to consumption.

The Millers average selling three beef per month through their restaurant, and also sell frozen beef. If you haven’t had a chance to visit the Talmo Market and Grill, it’s a trip that you’ll want to experience. The last time that I was there Jill asked “Would you like me to order for you?” I recommend that everyone trust her judgment!

The ACA Annual Report (the state of the Association) was presented next. Numbers and trends for membership (both adult and junior), registrations and transfers were presented and discussed.

The number which is most concerning and bears the most scrutiny is for Chiangus registrations. Since 2005, Chiangus registrations have declined 71%. Comparatively, over the same time period, Chianina registrations have declined 9.65%. Obviously, the Chiangus registration trend must be examined and reversed.

On October 31, there were 1,236 active breeders. Of those, 639 registered just one head. 1,110 different breeders (89.81% of active breeders) registered one to five head. We are an association that consists of breeders that register a small number of cattle (generally only those that are sold or shown.) | CHIANINA JOURNAL | JANUARY/FEBRUARY

The majority of registrations in 2019 did not have performance data submitted with them. The following graph depicts trends from 2019 through 2018 (2019 is included, but is incomplete.) The red columns show the number of cattle registered each year. The orange columns represent the number of registrations that are submitted with birth weights. The yellow columns represent the number of registrations that include weaning weights.

Interestingly while the second group activity examined the value of performance testing, and the third activity focused on whether Chianina/Chiangus are a “show” or “commercial” breed, and while the majority of people attending the annual meeting valued performance testing, and leaned toward identifying with commercial versus show cattle, very few people submitting registrations also include performance data. If Chianina and Chiangus cattle are going to be commercially accepted, commercial cattlemen will expect to see documentable, reliable performance data and EPDs. Revenue streams for the ACA were presented next. In 2019, the single largest revenue stream (47.46% of ACA’s income) was derived from registrations and transfers. Memberships were second, accounting for 21.12%. Journal subscriptions and advertising was third at 9.17%. These percentages are very similar to those reported in 2018.

One of the biggest accomplishments of which the Board of Directors and Jennifer Roach is most proud is the fact that the Line of Credit at the Platte Valley Bank has been paid off and retired! The

ACA has no debt! The building is debit-free, the association has no intermediate or long-term debt and is operating profitably.

The ACA Headquarters building is our single largest asset and is showing its age. In 2019 the roof was replaced. There are, however, some other long-term improvements that will need to be made in order to maintain and improve the building and the property.

There are currently four major issues facing the ACA. These include: • The need to increase registration numbers • The need to secure more performance data • The need to upgrade three major components of the building (parking lot, HVAC, outdoor electrical boxes) • The need to identify additional revenue streams (or expand the current revenue streams.)

In 2019, the Board of Directors and staff developed a multitude of new programs; each of which is designed to either add value to the cattle or breeders, or strengthen the junior program, which should have the long-term benefit of adding value and increasing the marketability of Chianina / Chiangus genetics. These include: • ACA – University of Illinois Sire Test • Fresh, new genetics, imported from Italy • Phil Parker imported 200 Full blood Chianina embryos • Everett Tom visited Italy and the Chiana Valley • Premium Chianina Beef • Strengthening Junior Programs • Introducing the All-American Junior Points Program • Conducing two Regional Junior Heifer Shows • Continuing the Steer Rewards Program • Building or expanding State Junior Associations As a special treat, Everett Tom, Leesburg, Ind., presented a slide show on his trip to Italy, the Chiana Valley and the fullblood operations that he visited while he was there.

In closing, there are a variety of ways that members can strengthen the ACA. Some of these include: • Registering more cattle.

• Submitting performance data on your entire calf crop.

• Registering every calf that you sell; transfer the papers.

• Promoting the Steer Rewards Program and the All-American Junior Points Program.

• Showing in the 2020 Regional Junior Heifer Shows.

• Selling and promoting Chianina beef.

• Promoting Premium Chianina Beef.

• Volunteering to serve on an ACA committee • Buying an ad in the ACJ • Strengthening your state association, and, your state junior association.

• Organizing or revitalizing your state Chianina Association • Electing State Association Officers (send that list to Heather) • Electing or appointing junior advisors • Organizing a state field day • Hosting a state show. Select a junior champion. (Send the results to Heather.)

• Consider organizing a state sale • Talking to your state fair board; adding Chianina and Chiangus breed shows in junior and open shows • Organizing a Junior Chianina Association in your state.

In summary, the ACA is in secure financial shape! We are debt-free and have no intermediate- or long-term liabilities. However, our building will need some attention, and we must find ways to register more cattle and add value to our pedigrees and the cattle that we raise. By working together, there is no limit to what we can accomplish in 2020 and beyond.

That’s the way I see it.

W

hen you begin something new, do you ever think about where this will lead you 20 years later? Everyone started somewhere when it comes to raising, showing or just having a passion for Chianina cattle. Whether it was buying a Chi heifer from your favorite breeder, raising one of your own that became the foundation female of your herd or attending Louisville or Junior Nationals for the very first time. If you’re like me, it was a mixture of all of those that began my lifelong passion and relationship with the American Chianina Association.

My family and I attended our first Chianina Junior Nationals in Murfreesboro, TN in 1999. We got involved from the start – did all the contests and activities, played cards over the showbox with friends we’d just met and started a tradition of attending almost every single junior nationals over the next 20 years. Being from West Texas our average drive to a Junior Nationals was 15 hours!! We drove as far North as Minot, North Dakota, as far East as Athens, Georgia and everywhere in between. I will always treasure not only the memories we made on the way there but the lifelong friendships we would continue building once we arrived.

I was blessed to grow up with a dad that served on the Senior Board of Directors (or the big board as we called it). Since that was way out of our league, my sisters and I all served on the junior board for several years. You don’t really have an appreciation or understanding for what it exactly entails to put on an event such as the junior nationals until you get more involved. Through my junior board experience I met people throughout the industry, developed leadership traits and skills I still use today and even conquered my personal fear of public speaking.

Throughout the last 20 years of being involved in this association there’s different memories that stick out in my mind. There was the time in 2001 where we exhibited the Grand and Reserve Champion in both the Junior and Open Show at the NAILE with two heifers we raised. And the epic barn wide water fight in Nebraska at Junior Nationals. The time I was President of the Junior Board of Directors in Lima, Ohio back in 2011-2012 and so many more I could name off. But the 2019 NAILE will go down on that list as well. It’s when I achieved a goal far sooner than I would have ever imagined and officially became a Board of Director of the American Chianina Association.

So I ask you where do you see your story in 20 years? Whether you’re a junior member who has dreams so big it makes your parents nervous or you’re an adult member that is hesitant to get more involved. Do your part to achieve whatever it takes to make this association even better. If you would have ever asked the little girl I used to be attending my very first junior nationals, if I would become the youngest member to ever be elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the American Chianina Association, I would have never even dreamed it. I am honored to serve and I can’t thank the organization that watched me grow up enough to allow a story like mine to come full circle.

A Look Ahead: Beef Industry 2020

A

s cattle producers we must not only wear many different hats but be very lucky and good at wearing them. After all, without a little luck, it’s rather hard to stay afloat these days.

Most of you probably didn’t know this, but I used to be a commodities broker for a grain company right out of college. My time there, combined with my passion for livestock, has allowed me to be very lucky, and, make some smart moves during challenging times.

Here is a look ahead to 2020.

Uncertainty over weather, trade policy and prices are making earning a living increasingly tough. It’s a very challenging time to pencil out a profit. Equipment is expensive. Land is expensive.

Everything is expensive… and we’re basically producing a crop for about the same price now that we were 10 years ago. Everything, except our profits, are getting much higher. While the concerns are real, so are the possibilities for growth in both domestic and global market expansion. Difficult times can bring opportunity as well, and it’s in those opportunities we’ll continue to build a strong Ag industry. Take ASF (African Swine Fever) for example. Since this economic tragedy occurred, Asian countries are struggling to secure a safe and reliable pork source. They are frantically looking to alternatives to meet their demand, and make up for their enormous short fall. China is the most notable adversary in this market, with its importance to American agriculture lying not only in its population (1.4 billion people as of 2017) but also an exploding middle class, which is estimated at 430 million and expected to be 780 million by the mid-2020s. This makes China a massive potential market for American producers. By comparison, the entire U.S. population is about 330 million, with roughly half being classified as middle class.

China’s middle-class wealth is continuing to grow and so does their appetite for Western products, especially protein. There are two things the U.S. can produce better than anyone else in this world; corn and beef. There is no doubt these two go together. The world likes what we have to offer. We have a superior product and they want it. While trade negotiations with China will clearly play a substantial role in the U.S. agricultural outlook for the foreseeable future, there are recent “concrete reasons to say” that progress is being made on that front. China is out of protein; they are short approximately 10 million metric tons of pork. That’s a lot of meat!

There are three Asian countries, Japan, China and South Korea, that account for 51% of all U.S. beef exports. Beef export sales

have been excellent in recent weeks and will continue to be a market driver. Even with the recent reports of shrinking national herd sizes and the declining number of cattle on feed, the value of great American beef looks promising.

When we begin to look at tariffs, this is where supply and demand breaks down into something more problematic. Inevitably, the tariff issue will be passed down to the consumer. Ultimately, these can limit the buying power of packers and feeders which is a huge driver within our market. Even with the recent up tick in beef export sales, there is still carry over in the market which tells me the market sees a bright future or a shortening of supply on the horizon for the beef industry. With these market signals it makes sense to feed some weight on your cattle as opposed to selling at weaning. The only thing to be cautious of right now is the value of gain drops off around 900 pounds, making this the threshold in a large majority of locations, country wide.

Kelsey and I have chosen to utilize grain by-products to help supplement our replacements and feeders, especially since we had such a wet spring and drought filled summer. Hay is in limited supply around us, so we’ve started thinking differently as to how we will feed cattle over the next few months. We are also shifting toward a more farm to table approach when marketing our feeders.

Just last week, we sold labeled Premium Chianina Beef. It’s opportunities like this that help add value to products, especially during times of shrunken margins. I challenge each of you to take advantage of this marketing program and together, the ACA can become part of the changing times and pave way for years to come!

i I’m Payton Jackson and I am an At-Large Director on the AJCA Junior Board.

The past couple of months being on the board has been truly special. Recently, the rest of the board and I helped out during the week of Louisville.

From checking in cattle to working the ring, I got to experience what is was like to be behind the scenes at a show and be a role model for the juniors.

One of my favorite things about the North American International Livestock Exposition is getting to hang out with my friends that I have met while exhibiting livestock. Being on the board, I have gotten the opportunity to meet some amazing people who are on the board. I hope that I get to take my time on the board and show other Chianina exhibitors how truly rewarding this industry is.

While in Louisville, the junior board started selling raffle tickets for our yearly fundraiser. This will replace our online sale this year. Tickets are $5 each or 6/$25.

The grand prize is a portable generator, second prize is a Sullivan Supply Rover Showbox and third prize is a RTIC Cooler. We will be selling tickets now through Junior Nationals. Junior board members will be at our upcoming shows in Denver and Fort Worth, so be sure to find one of us and get your tickets!

ongratulations to all the Chianina exhibitors at the 2019 North American International Livestock Exposition. With the show running as smoothly as it did we want to thank everyone who attended and helped us. We would like to thank the judges for the amazing job they did and getting through the show in a timely manner.

We had a Junior Chianina membership meeting where we talked about a few things coming up in the next few months.

One exciting thing is our raffle fundraiser!! This fundraiser will help us raise funds for the National Junior Heifer Show in Lima, Ohio!. We are selling raffle tickets ($5 each or 6 for $25) and you have a chance to win some cool prizes. First prize is a Honda

portable generator; Second is a Sullivan Supply Weekend Showbox; and third is an RTIC cooler. Any AJCA board member will have access to these and will be selling them from now through Junior Nationals!

ello All! First off, it was great seeing and catching up with so many fellow Chi breeders during the North American. It’s amazing how quickly the year has passed, and, like most things, there just isn’t enough time to accomplish everything we start the year wanting to do. I feel strongly however; the ACA staff and Board of Directors may think differently.

2019 brought a year of change for both the association and Ladies Auxiliary. Two major changes happened during our annual ‘Come as You Are’ luncheon. Jessica Cheeseman stepped down as President after serving the ACLA for the past 10 years.

During this time, Jessica got married and had 3 kids and we can’t thank her enough for the leadership and dedication she’s had to the auxiliary. Additionally, Deb Guens stepped down after serving as secretary/treasurer for the past 20 years! Deb too, was as committed and dedicated to our auxiliary as anyone, and we cannot thank her enough for the many wonderful years of service she provided to us. THANK YOU BOTH! 2020 will bring excitement and continued change for the auxiliary. The officers, directors and members of our auxiliary are dedicated to continuing our long-term support to our junior members. We are in the final stages of completing a new scholarship which will be available this coming spring, which will be offered in addition to the current graduating senior scholarship we’ve awarded annually.

We’d like to also extend a thank you to our royalty, Jillian Bryant and Cheyenne Kiser, for an outstanding job during NAILE. We look forward to watching you both fulfill your duties and responsibilities for the remainder of your reign.

2019 Chi Lady of the Year The 2019 Chi Lady of the Year was awarded to Jessica Cheeseman. Jessica served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary for 10 years. Prior to this, Jessica was extremely involved and active within the AJCA and ACA. Jessica’s parents, Terry and Sue Comer, were recognized this year as a 40-year member of the ACA. As you can tell, her dedication and passion for the breed is deeply rooted. Jessica and her husband, Ryan, along with their children, Claire, Tanner and Jase, live in Farmland, Ind. Jessica works for the county highway department and stays rather busy between dance classes and recitals and keeping up with the twin boys. The entire ACLA would like to congratulate Jessica on begin selected as the 2019 Chi Lady of the Year!

In Memory – Donna Roach

Donna Lyn Roach passed away at home surrounded by her husband and children at 4:14 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25, 2019, at the age of 58. Donna had been battling aggressive cancer for two and half years.

Donna was born February 11, 1961, to Sue and Wallace Lutes in Arlington, Texas.

Donna graduated from Bowie High School in 1979, where she was a Bowie Babe. She then attended Texas Wesleyan to be a teacher and the University of Texas at Arlington, where she studied accounting. She owned and operated Architectural Wood Designs cabinet shop with her husband Tony for 35 years.

Donna and Tony also owned a registered cattle operation and enjoyed showing cattle.

Donna lived a very active lifestyle and was loved by many. Her love, selflessness, enthusiasm and persistence blessed all who knew her. Donna recently retired and moved to Missouri after living in Waxahachie, Texas, for 33 years. She loved spending weekends on the lake with friends and being outdoors.

Donna is survived by her husband of 35 years, Tony Roach, and children, Kayla and Travis Roach. She is also survived by her parents, Sue and Wallace Lutes and her two sisters, Cheryll Thompson and Melinda Lutes, along with a nephew, Ryan Fowler, a niece, Isabel Gamboa, son-in-law Hunter Roach and two great nieces, Savannah and Riley Fowler.

A celebration of life for Donna was held at the Bethel Methodist Church on Saturday, October 12, 2019

In Memory – Larry Phinney

Lawrence A. Phinney, age 77 of St. Johns, Mich., passed away on September 6, 2019 at Sparrow Hospital with his family by his side. Larry was born on January 11, 1942 in St. Johns, Mich., the son of Arnold and Violet (Longcor) Phinney. He was a 1960 graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School and on August 18, 1962 he married Bonnie G. Locher in DeWitt, MI. Larry was a farmer and worked at Mich-

ince the last issue I have been all over the place it sure seems. One of the highlights was a trip to CK Cattle in Alabama for their bull sale. It was a great sale with exceptional hospitality. I flew into Montgomery, met up with Ken Culp and went straight to Chuck’s. Wow, what an outstanding set of bulls we looked through that evening. Along with looking at cattle, Chuck rolled out the hospitality and we joined in on an exceptional steak dinner. Following the sale on Friday, Chuck gave us a tour of his operation and cow herd. Thank you Chuck & the entire CK crew.

From here we went full speed in to planning and attending the Annual Meeting and National Show in Louisville. We started the week with the junior show evaluated by Matt Copeland of New Mexico. It was strong showing and the championship lineup was one of the best throughout the weekend. Tuesday we held our annual meeting and had an exceptional turnout.

We awarded the All-American Awards, 40 year memberships, Promoter of the Year and Commercial Cattlemen of the Year.

He was active with the Clinton County 4-H, raised cattle all of his life and had a show supply company for all livestock equipment and supplies. He was also a member of the Heart of Michigan Antique Tractor Club and had attended Grove Bible Church.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie, 2 daughters, Kelley (Dave) Tresnak of Sandusky, Mich. and Kendra (Bryan) Lehner of St. Johns, Mich.; 2 grandchildren, Christian and Catherine Lehner. Brother, Ron (Holly) Phinney of St. Johns, and sisters, Linda (Dan) Ritter of St. Johns and Kathy (David) Rozga of Mt. Pleasant, Mich.

Funeral services were held at Grove Bible Church on Wednesday, September 11, 2019

Regional Junior Shows Announced for 2020

In order to promote Chianina and Chiangus genetics and provide additional opportunities for youth to exhibit Chianina and Chiangus cattle, the ACA has announced the creation of two regional junior shows.

One show will be held in the Western Region and one show will be held in the Eastern Region. Each show will be open to all AJCA members in good standing and AJCA members may participate in one or both shows, regardless of region. The Regional

Shows will also be a points show for the ACA Junior All-American Points Program.

This year, the Western Regional Junior Show will be held in conjunction with the Nebraska State Fair in August, 2020. The show will be a two-division show – Chianina & Chiangus. There will also be an open show on the same day, which junior exhibitors may also participate in.

The Eastern Regional Junior Show will be held in conjunction with the Kentucky State Fair, also in August 2020. This show will also be a two-division show – Chianina & Chiangus and the two-division Kentucky State Fair Open Show will be the same day.

The Italian Connection

t was the early 1970’s and Indiana farmers Everett and Marie Tom were at a crossroads. They had enough acreage to scrape out a living raising corn, soybeans and cattle, but the weather and cattle prices often offered more setbacks than rewards. They now had five children and had to decide: take some risks and invest in new areas, or stay the course and hope for good weather and prices. They thought long and hard, and then they jumped. Knowing there was an underground lake beneath their northern Indiana, soil rich property, they invested in irrigation, one of the first in the area to take this risk. This eventually led to consistently profitable crops, then more acreage and then contracts with seed companies. The land flourished. The farm grew under their leadership and then grew

exponentially as the leadership passed to their son, Kip Tom, their daughter, Melissa Tom Gerber, and the next generation.

Today, Tom Farms grows more than 19,000 acres of seed corn and soybeans.

The other area that needed to be addressed was Everett’s cattle herd. Everett had a feedlot that he stocked at that time with mostly Angus, but he saw a market for leaner beef emerging. He began a transition to a stock breeding program, initially using Charlois, then Simmentals and finally landing on Chianina, an Italian breed first introduced to the U.S. in California in 1972. His first Chianina purchase was from breeder Jerry Adamson of Valentine, Neb., and the resulting Chianina crosses at Tom Farms eventually became a basis of his prize-winning herd.

Everett went on to serve on the American Chianina Association Board of Directors and in 2012, received an award for his 40 years of membership in the Chi Association. Everett’s children, grandchildren and great-grand children now raise the breed to show cattle in 4-H programs and national shows.

This last October, Everett and Marie Tom decided to make the circle complete. At the ages of 89 and 91, they traveled to Italy to visit a Chianina farm called Tenuta La Fratta. This living historical farm in the Tuscany region, dating to 1208 AD, boasts approximately 450 acres, 400 Chianina cattle, a hotel and restaurant. In Italian terms, it is called an agri-tourismo. The beautiful property is a wonderful place to host a wedding, spend a week in rural Tuscany and also see an Italian Chianina operation first hand. The restaurant, La Toraia, boasting Chianina beef entrees, is the former barn that housed bulls, complete with engraved bull nameplates above each table. Ms. Benedetta Tamburi, the farm’s agronomist, stated that the farm primarily uses on-site bulls for breeding, feeding the cattle a diet that includes silage, corn, soybeans, sunflower seeds and forage grasses, all raised on the farm. The farm staff also brings in bulls from outside sources to increase genetic diversity. Donatto, a Chianina bull born here, achieved a world record achieving weight of more that 1700 Kg. Hosting this visit to Italy was Everett and Marie’s son, U.S.

The Italian Connection…Continued Ambassador Kip E. Tom, the representative to the United Nations for Food and Agriculture in Rome, along with Chianina farm owner Ms. Olimpia Gianno. She noted that the farm’s villa and church were built in approximately 1550 A.D. Their Chianina breeding program began in 1892. Ms. Gianno comes from a long line of visionaries. Her great-grandmother, Guiliana Galeotti Ottieri Della Ciaja, noting a lack of reading skills in the local children, personally oversaw the building of a 2-room school on the farm property to begin educating all of the children in the area. Very unusual for the time, the school continued for many years and graduated its final class in 1963 before moving to more modern classrooms. The classrooms are preserved on the farm property in honor of her vision. Ms. Gianno also owns and manages a winery near Florence. The Tom family considered their visit to this Chianina farm to be a great privilege and a highlight of their time in Italy.

U.S. Ambassador Kip E. Tom now oversees USAID (the U.S. Agency for International Development), the World Food Program and the FAO (Food and Agricultural Development Organization) of the United Nations. He is based in Rome but considers Indiana his home. Everett and Marie now look back over those early years and the risks that could have failed with humble gratitude. Everett continues to keep a cattle herd and Marie, a pianist, plays at her church every week. They were grateful to be able to travel to Rome with two of their daughters to see their son’s work as he helps to provide food security and promote agricultural development all over the world.

They were also privileged to personally meet Pope Francis during their visit.

2019 MEMBERSHIP SURVEY RESULTS The ACA Board of Directors agreed to survey the membership to assist in providing input and direction to the function of the association. The questions were drafted and shared with the ACA Staff, who provided substantial editing and input. The revised questions were reviewed and further modified by the Board of Directors. The research instrument was developed using Qualtrics (an online survey tool). Every ACA and AJCA member with a valid email address received an invitation to participate via an e-blast, which was emailed on October 15, 2019. Three additional follow-up e-blast reminders were sent to those who had not opened their email on October 19, 25, and 29. The survey closed on October 31. A total of 112 members completed the entire questionnaire. The results were presented at the 2019 ACA Annual Membership Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky on Tuesday, November 17.

Adult members were much more interested in receiving a call from an ACA staff member as compared to junior members. 40.79% of adults indicated that they would appreciate a call from an ACA staff member, as compared to 0.00% of youth! Likewise, 47.37% of adults responded “maybe” (compared to 66.67% of youth). Only 11.84% of adults did not want an ACA staff member to call them, compared to one-third (33.33%) of youth.

Question 3: Would you appreciate an on-farm/ranch visit from our field staff?

Members were mixed regarding their desire for contact by an ACA staff member: • 30.10% desired a call • 51.46% were undecided • 18.45% did NOT desire a call This was a curious response; what breeder wouldn’t want to be

Similar to the previous questions, 35.24% of respondents indicated that they would appreciate a visit from an ACA field representative to their farm or ranch. 38.10% were undecided, while 26.67% did not want a visit from an ACA staff member.

The responses to this question also required additional study.

Therefore, the results were analyzed by comparing the responses from adult versus junior members.

Members overwhelmingly believe that the ACA Staff provides quality customer service with 80.00% answering “yes” to this question.

Question 5: What more should your association be doing at (or with) shows or events?

It is interesting to note that a larger percentage of both adult and junior members were receptive to the idea of a farm / ranch visit from an ACA staff member; however, they didn’t want them to call!

Adult members were much more interested in a visit than were junior members with 44.87% responding “yes”, as compared to 7.14% of junior members. Only 15.38% of adult members did not want a farm / ranch visit, as compared to 60.71% of junior members.

Thirty-five (of 112) people responded to this open-ended question. The responses were categorized as follows: 1. Additional advertising, marketing, and promotion (10) 2. Increase ACA staff presence at state fairs (8) 3. Increase the number of state and regional shows (8) with Chianina and Chiangus divisions (host more regional shows, convince more shows nation-wide to offer Chianina and Chiangus classes, host more state shows) 4. Promote full blood and high percentage cattle (6) 5. Promote the Chianina breed versus a “type” (5) Question 6: How do you prefer to receive communications from the ACA about association events, changes, shows, etc.?

Receiving an e-blast from the ACA was the preferred method of receiving communications from the ACA by both adults (1.86) and juniors (1.66). However, preferences for the other three methods of communication differed when comparing adults and juniors. The ACJ was the second most preferred communication for adults (2.4) but was last (4th) with a mean rank of 3.07 for juniors. Adults ranked receiving information from the ACA website third (2.7) as compared to juniors, who ranked it second (2.24). Interestingly, adults ranked direct mail last (4th in preference, with a mean rank of 2.93) whereas juniors ranked it third, with a mean rank of 2.34. These preference differences preferences are a good example of the stark comparisons in generational differences and the methods by which different generations prefer to communicate.

While 41.75% of respondents indicated that they would consider online advertising with the ACA, 45.63% were undecided. This could indicate that members are either in favor of online advertising opportunities, or are considering it. This could support the idea of creating and promoting online advertising opportunities for members.

Although the question as to whether or not the respondent worked off of the farm / ranch was not asked, the majority of ACA members are not full-time, self-employed farmers / ranchers. Therefore, the amount of time required to be at a national show is a big barrier to participation.

The overwhelming majority (89.72%) of respondents have registered cattle in the past 12 months.

The greatest number of respondents indicated that they sometimes (as compared with always, most of the time, half of the time, or never) submit performance data when registering cattle (43.27%). Only 17.31% of respondents reported that they always submit performance data.

The ACA Board of Directors has created several new programs that will be introduced for the first time in 2020. Respondents indicated that they would participate in the following new programs in the coming year: • Joining or reviving the state association (32.61%) • Creating, reviving, or joining the state junior association (26.09%) • Exhibiting in one of the regional junior shows (19.57%) • Participating in the Junior All-American Points Program (15.22% • ACA – University of Illinois Sire Test (6.52%)

The ACA divides the United States into four regions. In terms of membership, the Northeast region is the largest (Indiana and Iowa are typically first and second in both membership and registrations.) These include the following: • Full Blood breeders are dissatisfied with the ACA and focus their frustration on the Board of Directors. Their specific concerns include: ◊ A perceived lack of support for full bloods ◊ The perceived lack of fullblood shows • The ACA Board’s preference for a particular “type” of cattle, rather than full blood Chianina • Respondents believe that the easiest ways to register more cattle in the ACA Herd Book include: ◊ Expanding state and regional sales ◊ Increasing the demand for show cattle ◊ Expanding the number of state and regional sales for ACA cattle ◊ A significant effort should be made to ensure that all state fairs offer both Chianina and Chiangus divisions in both junior and open shows. However, respondents indicated that the ACA is responsible for making contact with state fairs and convincing them to offer Chianina and Chiangus breeds. In reality, this is best accomplished by ACA members that live in that state and have relationships with state fair board members.

The cross between a Chianina with any of the British breeds emphasizes hybrid vigor, exceptional growth rates, heavier weaning weights and even makes calving easier due to the Chianina having a slender shaped head.

Successful beef production starts and ends with the cow.

Chianina and Chi-cross mothers provide a complete package of maternal skills full of staying power. The maternal heterosis bred into these cattle compliments the natural mothering ability of Chianina.

• ACA members must remember that the ACA is a small, lean organization with limited resources. The ACA cannot be all things to all people. It is the responsibility of the Board of Directors to take input (including the findings of this membership survey) and set priorities.

• In order for the ACA to grow, it must be strengthened at the grassroots level.

• Members can grow the association by doing the following: ◊ Organize a state association (both adult and junior) ◊ Host an annual state show. (Sent the results to Heather Counts. The results will be printed in the ACJ and points will be compiled for All-American Awards and Junior All-American Awards. ◊ Work with your state fair (and other major shows) to offer breed classes for both Chianina and Chiangus. (Send the results from those shows to Heather Counts.) ◊ Work with ACA staff to coordinate and conduct either a state or regional sale. Providing additional opportunities to show and sell cattle was identified as two of the best ways to increase registrations. ◊ Register more cattle. ◊ Submit performance data on your entire contemporary group. ◊ Transfer every head that you sell for breeding and/or show.

(Don’t ask the buyer “Do you want the papers?” Instead, ask the buyer “How do you want the papers transferred?”

he American Chianina Association (ACA) is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, based in Platte City, Missouri. It was incorporated in 1972. Since that time, more than 400,646 cattle have been registered in the ACA Herd Book.

This report will be divided into eight categories, including: Membership, Registrations, Performance Data, Transfers, Revenue Streams, Financial, Infrastructure, and Staffing. The ACA operates on a calendar year. Therefore, everything reported for 2019 is a ten month report, from January 1 through October 31.

Membership: As of October 31, 2019, two different membership levels are offered; adult and youth. New members pay a $100 fee and a $100 annual renewal fee. (A $25 subscription to the American Chianina Journal) is included with all adult memberships and renewals.)

Therefore, $75 from each adult membership and renewal is credited to “membership” with the remaining $25 credited to “ACJ subscriptions.” Junior memberships are $50 for the first year with an annual $25 renewal fee. Junior members do not automatically receive a subscription to the ACJ with their membership; therefore, all junior membership and renewal fees are credited to “membership” in their entirety.

When considering membership numbers, there are two variables to consider; new memberships and renewals. Table 1 depicts adult memberships from 2009 through 2019.

ACA membership renewals have been very consistent for the ten year period from 2009 through 2018 (the most recent year for which complete data are available), ranging from 1550 to 1655, with an average of 1598. New memberships range from 156 to 223, with an average of 184, for the same time period. The peak year for membership renewals was 2015 (1655); the peak year for new memberships was 2012 (223). The highest total number of memberships (combining new and renewals) was 2012 with a combined total of 1873. The average combined membership for this period is 1783.

Junior memberships are issued to youth that are 21 years of age or less. Junior membership are valid until December 31 of the year in which the individual turns 21 years of age. Table 2 illustrates junior memberships during the same time frame.

When considering junior memberships from 2009 through 2019, it is important to note that the Board of Directors made a policy change in 2014, which was implemented on January 1, 2015. Prior to 2015, AJCA memberships involved paying a one-time fee that was good through the member’s 22nd birthday. Therefore, every junior membership remained current until that member aged out, regardless of whether he or she continued to be involved with showing or registering Chianina or Chiangus cattle.

Beginning in 2015, a renewal fee was charged annually. This policy change substantially increased membership revenue, while also “flushing out” those memberships that were no longer active.

For the 10 year time period (2009 through 2018), the average number of new AJCA members was 385.

Additionally, the number of junior membership renewals from 2015 through 2018 ranges from 1809 to 1855 with an average of 1830.5.

It is interesting to note that new memberships (depicted in red on the bar graphs) have increased substantially over the 11 year span.

2018 (the most current year of complete data) posted the greatest number of new members at 473.

It is important to recognize that, beginning in 2015 (the first year in which both junior and adult members were charged an annual renewal fee) there are substantially more new and renewal junior memberships than adult memberships every year. This fact should (and does) have a big impact on programming emphasis.

Registrations: Registrations are the lifeblood of the organization, representing the single largest revenue stream. The ACA cannot grow without registering more cattle. is essential. Unfortunately, since 2005, registrations numbers have been declining. The ACA registered 10,023 in 2005. In 2018, 5,788 were registered. (These numbers include both Commercial and Foundation cows that were entered into the herd book that year.)

The composite with the greatest decline over this period is Chiangus. There were 4028 Chiangus registered in 2005. In 2018, there were 1171 registered. This is a decrease of 70.93%. Obviously, it is imperative, both to the Chiangus breed, as well as the Association, to reverse this trend.

The Chimaine composite (although they are now referred to as Chianina) continues to be the composite with the greatest number of registrations, although the number registered has also declined from 2005 to 2018. There were 3699 registered in 2005, compared to 3342; a decline of 9.65%.

When considering registrations, it is interesting and enlightening to also consider the number of breeders registering those cattle. So far in 2019, 1236 active breeders have registered at least one head.

Unfortunately, the greatest number of breeders registered just one head. The number of breeders registering cattle in 2019 is depicted in Table 3.

and October 31, 2019, there were 3723 Registrations (87.58%), 13 Terminals 0.31%), 307 Commercial Cows (7.22%) and 208 Foundation Cows (4.89%).

Another challenge that is coupled with registrations is the need to increase the number of registration applications that include performance data. So far in 2019, only 72.6% of registrations include birth weights and 24.43% include weaning weights. In order for Chianina and Chiangus cattle to be accepted as a credible source of germ plasm, we must offer meaningful EPDS, with high accuracies, that will help commercial cattlemen achieve their breeding objectives and reach their goals.

Performance Data: Currently, the ACA does not require performance data to be submitted in order to register cattle. Additionally, neither performance data nor EPDs are provided to judges in any of the ACA sponsored shows (North American, National Wester, Southwest Stock Show, National Junior Heifer Show, Chiangus Classic.) The data suggests that the submission of performance data is not a high priority among the vast majority of breeders (most of whom register five head or less per year.)

Table 4 compares the number of head registered (from 2010 through 2019) with the number of head for whom Birth Weights and Weaning Weights were submitted.

From January 1 through October 31, 639 different breeders registered one head. 250 different breeders registered two head. 123 different breeders registered three head. 60 different breeders registered four head and 38 breeders registered five head. This equates to 1110 different breeders registered 1 to 5 head, or 1938 cattle, which accounts for 52.05% of the cattle registered in the Herd Book so far this year. However, 89.81% of the active breeders registered five head or less in 2019.

Conversely, 75 different breeders registered 6 to10 head, or 543 cattle, which accounts for 15.35% of the cattle registered so far this year. The 51 largest breeders registered 11 to 121 head, or 1242 cattle, accounting for 33.36% of the cattle registered so far in 2019.

Of the 4251 cattle entered in the Herd Book between January 1

In 2010, Birth Weights were submitted with 66.36% of all cattle registered while Weaning Weights were submitted with 43.03% of registrations. Conversely, in 2019, Birth Weights were submitted with 72.60% of registrations, while Weaning Weights were submitted with only 24.43% of all cattle registered.

Interestingly, the percentage of registrations being submitted with Birth Weights have remained fairly constant and the percentage of registrations with Birth Weights has actually risen over the time period. However, the percentage of registrations submitted with Weaning Weights has decreased drastically over the same time

period, plummeting from 43.03% to 24.43%.

It is important to note that commercial cattlemen that purchase bulls in groups demand both performance data and high accuracy EPDs. The ACA should seek incentives that will encourage and reward breeders that submit performance data on every calf in the crop.

Transfers: Transfers have remained fairly steady from 2016 through 2018. A good rule of thumb is that transfers should account for about 50% of all registrations. In 2018, there were 3485 transfers and 5,788 registrations, meaning that 60.21% of all cattle registered were transferred to new owners. Table 5 illustrates the number of transfers over the four year period from 2015 through October 31, 2019.

The ACA will continue to explore additional revenue streams in 2020 and beyond. The ACA Building is 80% larger than we currently need. Therefore, renting additional offices in the basement is an option. Providing registration services for another small breed association could also be an option; however, associations willing to outsource their registrations are difficult to locate.

While the large percentage of transfers may seem like a success for the ACA, it is actually a negative. Since most of the cattle being registered are being transferred, this means that generally, only those cattle that are sold are being registered. The ACA must find ways to convince breeders that registered cattle are worth more than unregistered cattle. Breeders should register a larger percentage of their calf crop, even if only to obtain a Performance Pedigree, rather than a registration certificate.

Revenue Streams: It appears that the ACA has four primary revenue streams; registrations and transfers (47.46%), memberships (21.12%), NJHS (12.12%), and ACJ (9.17%). Five additional revenue streams (ABHA, Rent, Sire Test, Misc., and Other) collectively account for 10.24% of ACA revenue. These percentages, however, are misleading. For example, both the NJHS and Sire Test revenue (combined, account for 15.42% of ACA revenue) actually contribute nothing to the bottom line of the ACA. Rather, these are “in and out” accounts. The ACA receives fees, but pays all of it back out.

In essence, the ACA has three primary revenue streams; registrations and transfers, memberships, and the ACJ. During 2019,

Financial: The ACA is a lean, efficient organization. Because the Association has found ways to operate frugally, and, because two of the biggest monthly expenses have been circumvented, the ACA is currently operating on firm financial footing.

The ACA Building is paid for and is debt free. The Line of Credit at the Platte Valley Bank (which, at one point, totaled $180,000) has been repaid in full and no longer requires principal or interest payments. Finally, the ACA saves in excess of $6,500 each month because the CEO position was not replaced when Andee Marston resigned on September 15, 2018.

October and November are the two most profitable months for the Association, while July and August are the least profitable.

Virtually no one registers cattle in August; because of fall sales and entry deadlines, the fall months are, financially, the best for the association.

Infrastructure: The ACA Building was constructed in 1982. The flat roof has always presented a challenge. Foam Masters was hired in October, 2018 to replace the roof. It was determined that there was insufficient time to replace the roof before inclement weather set in, so Foam Masters patched the roof (for no charge) to get through the winter.

The roof did not leak throughout the winter, spring, or summer, despite torrential rains and heavy snows. The roof was replaced in August, 2019 at a cost of $16,124.

The building, of course, is aging. Although the roof no longer presents a challenge, there are three other major improvements that must be undertaken. The parking lot needs substantial repair, the heating and cooling system must be upgraded (two of six units are functional) and the outdoor electrical boxes are antiquated and no longer up to code.

The Board of Directors is considering repair options for the parking lot. The heating and cooling and electrical boxes could last indefinitely, or they could go at any time. Each of these will require a substantial investment, and will be a major hit to the budget.

Staffing: The ACA currently operates with four employees; three of whom are full-time. The staff is extremely efficient and service oriented.

Each staff member connects well with members and does his or her utmost to solve problems, resolve issues, and operate as economically as possible.

Jennifer Roach joined the ACA in 2004. She currently serves as the Executive Director and Director of Accounting. Jennifer keeps a sharp eye on ACA finances and handles all paperwork related to employee withholding, corporation filings, etc. She is meticulous, economical, detail oriented, and provides exceptional customer service. Jennifer never met a stranger. When Jennifer engages someone in conversation, she makes them feel like this is the most important conversation they’ll have that day.

Cheryl Minyard joined the ACA in 2012. She serves as the Director of Membership & Registration. Cheryl prides herself on same day service on every registration, transfer, and membership that comes across her desk. Cheryl rarely leaves the ACA Office; and yet, multiple members have reported that, although they have never met in person, they know that whenever they have a problem to solve or issue to resolve, Cheryl will take care of it.

Heather Counts returned to the ACA staff, serving in her former role, on February 15, 2019. Heather serves as the ACJ Editor & Director of Events. (For the most part, “events” involve junior activities, the junior board, shows and sales.) Heather spends the bulk of her time working from home, although she does visit the office frequently. Heather somehow manages to balance work, Buckeye Acres, their growing family and all of their responsibilities, and still does a stellar job. No details are overlooked, no tasks are left undone, and she still manages to be creative, innovate, exceptionally organized, all while being extremely people oriented.

Dustin Hurlbut joined the ACA staff on March 1, 2019 as Director of Sales & Marketing / Field Representative in the West Region.

Dustin and his wife, Jeana, together with Dustin’s parents, operate an Angus and Simmental operation in Clark, South Dakota. Dustin is based from his home and currently works half-time. He worked for Deiter Brothers from 2001 until 2006. Dustin is knowledgeable, congenial, thoughtful, conscientious, and doesn’t mind putting lots of miles on his truck to serve ACA clientele. He makes every trip count.

In summary, the American Chianina Association is in good shape!

The ACA is on sound financial footing, is totally debt-free, and is as well staffed as it has been in years. The ACA Board of Directors are a highly functioning, collegial, dedicated group of individuals who are, perhaps, the most cohesive Board ever to serve the Association.

Currently, there are four major issues facing the organization: a. The need to increase registration numbers b. The need to secure more performance data c. The need to upgrade three major components of the building (parking lot, HVAC, outdoor electrical boxes) e. The need to identify additional revenue streams (or expand the current revenue streams.)

The staff and board of directors will continue to consider strategies to address these challenges, envision the future, create new programs designed to serve current, new, and potential members and audiences; all of which will strategically position the organization for a bright future. However, this will require everyone to do their part in supporting the work of the ACA. The ACA is counting on you.

Three new members were elected to the ACA Board of Directors in November, filling three terms that were vacated by outgoing board members Brad Winegardner, Keith Schrick and Rob Sheets. Below is bio information on the three new members; Segayle Foster, Derek Evans & Tyler Winegardner.

Segayle Foster – Texas Share the history of operation & family involvement in the breed: Foster Brothers Farms bought their first Chiangus bull in 1991, which began the foundation of our Chiangus herd that is still going strong today. The partnership started with my dad, Jody Foster, and my uncle, David Foster.

Growing up my sisters (Senee’ and SyAnn) and I showed Chiangus heifers and were very blessed to be successful at the backdrop at an early age. My dad also served on the adult board for 6 years. We attended our first Chianina Junior Nationals in Murfreesboro, Tenn., in 1999. To this day I have personally only missed two of them since. Throughout the years we were not only very involved in the contest each year, but each of us even served on the Junior Board of Directors. I was president of the junior board in 20112012 and my sister SyAnn was president in 2014-2015. I am so thankful to have spent the majority of my life in the Chianina breed, as I have not only learned life skills but I have gained lifelong friendships as well.

Why did you decide to run for the board?

I decided to run for the board because it has been a goal of mine for as long as I can remember. Growing up in this breed, I have always admired the adult board members and the example that they set, especially my own dad Jody Foster. Since I am a woman in

my late twenty’s, I am aware how rare that it is to be on the board of directors and I do not take it lightly. I want to set an example for other young woman in this organization that you can achieve anything if you work hard at it and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to give back to the association that has helped make me into the woman I am today.

Auxiliary program or doing what I’m doing and become a member of the adult Board of Directors. Either way, if we all work together and use our own individual talents the future is bright for our Association. It truly is an honor for me to be a part of this elite group and I look forward to all there is to come over the next couple of years.

Why Chianina cattle/what can they do for the beef industry?

In 1978, my great-grandad bought his first Chiangus bull. He bred him to his Angus based cowherd and started my family’s love for Chiangus cattle that would continue for generations to come. At that time he had a group of Angus cows as well, and over the years my family realized that the Chiangus cowherd had more longevity versus the Angus cowherd. As both cowherds matured, the Chiangus cows proved to be more fertile, endured less foot problems and had better utter quality. Therefore, when my dad and uncle started Foster Brothers Farms in 1991 they knew they wanted the foundation of the herd to be Chiangus cows.

We have been in the business ever since and have loved every minute of it.

Derek Evans – Kentucky

What do you envision for the association in the next 5-10 years?

In our breed the junior program is the foundation of our association, therefore I envision we continue to support and help our junior programs grow. By doing so, people like myself will continue to be involved even after their junior careers are over. That could mean starting a cow herd of their own, being involved in our Ladies

Share the history of operation & family involvement in the breed: I grew up in Central Illinois, raised mainly in the Hereford breed. I was first introduced to Chi influenced cattle while attending Oklahoma State University and working for Brian McKay. A few years later, I went on to manage a Simmental Operation in Kentucky, where I met my wife, Kelsey (Culp).

As many of you know, the Culp family has been diligent in their service to the ACA. Kelsey and I chose to develop a cattle operation based on cattle that perform great in the show ring, but more importantly in the pasture. With our family’s wide array of Chiangus and Chi-influenced genetics, these have been the foundation to our current operation. Both Kelsey and I knew that raising Chiangus cattle was where our goals could be achieved, as we feel this is the heart of this breed. Although my own roots don’t run incredibly deep within the ACA, I’m passionate about the Chianina breed.

The type of cattle we raise and the future we have ahead is the fire that keeps me pushing forward to make this Association a staple that everyone looks to as model of success.

Why did you decide to run for the board?

Ultimately, we’ve been known as just a “show breed” for far too long. There is no question, some of the most elite cattle I’ve ever seen or raised are registered within the ACA, but we need to be known for more than that. My goal is to help drive the commercial base back into the breed. We must be creative in finding ways to market cattle that are designed for the show ring and on the rail. As a good friend of mine once said, “We don’t raise show cattle, I HATE when people say that. We raise cattle that excel in their phenotype AND genotype because ultimately, everything is going to end up on a plate.” Collectively, we as a breed must work toward producing bulls that appeal to the commercial cattleman and emphasize the Hybrid Advantage, while also educating them on the impact our breed can make on their bottom-line.

I also want to continue to build a strong junior program and open additional marketing opportunities for our breeders. We as an association and breed rely on our breeders for success. But they rely on the success and opportunities we create for their customers. We need to push very hard for more junior involvement to help mold the leaders of tomorrow today and I can’t think of a better organization to be involved in than the AJCA. It’s important to instill trust back with each breeder, regardless of the size of their operation. I hope I’m able to help achieve that.

Why Chianina cattle/what can they do for the beef industry?

My wife and I have chosen to breed Chianina cattle because we believe in the maternal traits they possess that make great

cows. Additionally, quality Chianina genetics wean off calves that weigh more, convert and grade better. If I’m not mistaken that is what we are all shooting for and I feel some of us have lost sight of that. I love a phenotypical masterpiece as much as the next great livestock person. But, if we don’t show the commercial beef producer what we can do for their bottom line, we will simply always be a novelty breed. Chi cattle are diverse, functional and provide the longevity ideal for production. We hear this same message over and over. We need to educate the commercial cattle producer on Hybrid Advantage and how our breed can improve there weaning weights, yearling weights, ADG, marbling score, yield grades, and ultimately his bottom line, all while maintaining the phenotypical traits we are known for. If we don’t address the hard truths of declining junior involvement and the decline in registrations now, we will cease to exist in 5-10 years.

What do you envision for the association in the next 5-10 years?

The ACA has been through a series of highs and lows since I’ve become involved, but that’s what has gotten us to where we are now. In the next 5-10 years, I believe the association will flourish and be a staple for other breeds to model after. As most of you might or might not know, I work in the Commercial Construction industry. In our line of work, your company is only as good as the people you hire. I feel the ACA has done a fabulous job hiring Heather back to serve as the Junior Activities Director, as well as hiring our quality Field Representative, Dustin Hurlbut. An association, company, team or cattle operation cannot achieve success if there is no one at the helm.

The Junior program with Heather at the helm is in the right hands. She has done an exceptional job with Jr. Nationals, the junior board, and the ACJ is the best it has been in a very long time. There has been a

steady decline in total registrations since 2007, but the decline in junior participants to me is honestly more troubling as they are the future of our breed and industry.

There has also been a slow decline since the inception of the 6.25 rule at national shows, including NAILE, FWSS and Jr. Nationals.

These declines lead me to believe this rule has affected participation and involvement within the ACA. I feel strongly that we should give everyone, both breeders and buyers, the opportunity to show or sell cattle at these shows, but also educate them on the advantages of breeding up or buying up. I feel this will ultimately help the Association and more importantly, it’s breeders. The beef industry faces a very tough road ahead.

We have more opposition now than ever.

If we do not teach and educate our junior members on ways to educate, inform and lead people to the truth about animal agriculture, they will face even tougher times ahead.

Additionally, as an association, we need more data! This will reflect onto the commercial producers what we as a breed can do for them. I feel we also need to do more… scan data, kill data, HD50… anything to get a more accurate representation of our EPD’s.

I believe we as a breed need to strive to develop a plethora of bulls that excel genotypically and phenotypically but are 25% Chi or greater. This continues our Hybrid Advantage. This data would allow the ACA to have more marketing capabilities for producers and could attract a new pool of buyers. A little now could mean a lot more down the road.

In closing I would like to thank the ACA staff and breeders for giving me the opportunity to serve on the ACA Board of Directors.

NEW BOARD MEMBER BIOS continued Tyler Winegardner – Ohio Share the history of operation & family involvement in the breed: I was born and raised on a Chianina operation in Ohio that is still family owned. Along with my dad, Brad, and brother-in-law, Kurtis Klingaman, we run around 75 mature cows and do an extensive ET program where we utilize other producers

to raise our calves. We have an annual production sale the first Saturday in November and sell steers private treaty starting in September.

I am a graduate of Black Hawk East and Michigan State University where I majored in animal science and was on the livestock judging teams both places.

My wife Natalie and I have two sons, Beckett and Ryker, and are excited about both of them being a part of the cattle industry.

Why did you decide to run for the board?

I chose to run for the board because I

want to be a contributor to our breed. I was born and raised with Chianina cattle and want to do my part to help it succeed.

What do you envision for the association in the next 5-10 years?

In 5-10 years my hope is that we grow our registration numbers and continue to make the cattle better.

Staff Reports: Heather Counts: Production of the ACJ is going well, with increased ad sales and content. The advertising deadline for the October ACJ is approaching. The 2019 NJHS is wrap up is being finalized, with positive reports coming from the membership daily.

2020 NJHS planning is going well. The dates for the 2020 NJHS will be June 28July 4. Tentative locations for the coming years include: Chickasha, OK 2021; Grand Island, NE 2022; Louisville, KY 2023; Kansas City, MO 2024. The AJCA board had a conference call September 10, 2019. They will attend YBIC in Denver 2020. The AJCA board recommended that the Chianina B&O show be on a different day than the Chianina owned show.

Break at 9:22 am. Reconvened at 9:55 am Dustin Hurlbut: Dustin has traveled 2,327 miles throughout North Dakota, Wyoming, South Dakota and Missouri making herd visits. He has attended the South Dakota Summer Spotlight and the South Dakota State Fair. His September travel plans include traveling through Oklahoma and Texas making herd visits.

Ryan Robb: Not present Cheryl Minyard: The registration moratorium has been extended through the end of September.

Jennifer Roach: Jennifer informed the board of the increase of Fullblood Chianina registrations. She has made contacts and progress in developing a genetic testing program. An electrician is coming in the coming weeks to look at making some repairs.

Committee Reports: Recognition: Schrick reported on the 40 year member awards. Customized bourbon barrel tops will be presented to the Seedstock Producer, Commercial Producer and Promoter of the Year. The awards will be presented at the annual meeting at the North American. Culp will present the awards and write articles for ACJ. Junior & Youth Programs: Culp presented the committee’s recommendation of building state junior associations to strengthen the AJCA. Counts will contact states to help initiate and organize these.

The ACA is willing to help fund meetings and fund these state association meetings.

The committee also recommends a heifer reward program similar to the Chi steer program.

Dunklau moved that the ACA provide up to $250 reimbursement to new state junior associations to help with start up costs associated with state meetings. Sheets seconded. Motion carries.

Dunklau moved that the ACA implement a heifer rewards program mirroring the steer rewards program using the same shows from the AJCA All American show list. Garrett seconded. Motion carries.

Performance & Genetic Abnormality: Guest Dr. Bob Weaber joined the meeting to provide his expertise on EPDs, indexes and accuracies and discussed how the ACA can maximize the sire test. More discussion was made. Tracy made the motion to remit the details for the sire test to the Performance and Genetic Abnormality committee.

Dunklau seconded. Motion carries. Tracy, Roach and Weaber will work on securing a 50k contract and present at the November meeting.

Building and Grounds: Higgins reported to the board that the roof repairs have been completed and paid for entirely. Discussion was made about repairing the parking lot and it was tabled for further discussion.

Promotions, Benefits & Marketing: Higgins discussed promotions at the National Show. A stall crawl is planned again for the National Show. Garrett moved that we provide space in the ACA booth at the National Show for the Ladies Auxiliary and the ACA will have a benefit auction during the Stall Crawl. Sheets seconded. Motion carries. The Promotions, Benefits, and Marketing Committee will handle the sale.

Liaison Updates: Chiangus Classic: No report Auxiliary: No report AJCA: Brooklyn Curtin gave an update on the AJCA. They are planning on ordering new jackets for AJCA Board. Ideas of a new fundraiser are in the works.

Old Business: Egg Extravaganza: Garrett presented a proposal for a 2022 Egg Extravaganza to be held at the National Show in Louisville. The Promotions, Benefit and Marketing, and the Show and Sale committees, will handle the details and introduce it at the NAILE. All-American & Show Heifer/Bull/Sire of the Year Awards: Different options were discussed for awarding the winners.

Tracy moved to budget $50-100 for each All- American award, and approximately

$250 for the show animal of the year, and Counts be responsible for gathering the awards. Dunklau seconded. Motion passed.

The awards will be presented at the annual meeting at the North American.

Staff Evaluations: Culp and Sheets conducted staff evaluations on Wednesday September 12 and the reviews will be delivered to each employee in their mailboxes.

Board member elections: Segayle Foster, Tyler Winegardner, Ken Culp have committed thus far. In the case of a vacancy, the board of directors will appoint someone to fill the vacancy.

2020 Regional Junior Shows: Hurlbut has been in contact with the Nebraska State Fair and they will host a Western Regional show.

The Kentucky State Fair will host the Eastern Regional show pending contract approval.

New Business: Renegotiating leases and contracts: The office suite in the ACA building is currently leased through December 31, 2019. Culp will handle the next year’s lease.

Chianina fractions versus percentages: Sheets made a presentation on the idea of converting ACA pedigrees from percentages back to fractions. Dr. Weaber added input.

After much discussion, the board consensus is greatly appreciative of Rob’s diligence and research put into this project. The project was tabled for more discussion.

2019 NAILE Plans: The junior show check in is Friday, and open show check in is on Saturday. The junior show will be held on Sunday, and the open show is on Wednesday. A National Show program will again be produced and full page ads will be sold for $150.

Other events are: Board meeting: Tuesday at 10:00 am Annual meeting: Tuesday at 1:00 pm Stall Crawl: Monday night Membership survey: An on-line membership survey will be distributed immediately to the membership with the results being shared at the National Meeting.

Membership Levels: Culp will research and later make a presentation on possibly structuring different membership levels.

Staff Meeting Notes: Heather made a request to purchase a camera for ACA promotion. Sheets moved that the ACA purchase a camera per Heather’s recommendation for a value of $1200-$1500. Garrett seconded. Motion carries.

Culp suggested that we invite the membership to send in short video clips to be used for ACA promotions. If a video is chosen, the member will receive a monetary donation. Schrick moved, Winegardner seconded. Motion carries.

Dunklau moved to enter executive session, Tracy seconded. Motion carries.

Call to Order: Culp called the meeting to order at 9:34 a.m. EST. Roll Call: Members present: Culp, Sheets, Tracy, Sexton, Dunklau, Garrett, Winegardner and Higgins. New board members present: Tyler Winegardner, Segayle Foster and Derek Evans.

Staff Reports: Heather Counts: 91 head showed in the junior show; 26 Chiangus and 65 Chianina.

Both the Chianina and Chiangus champions were bred and owned females. 32 Chiangus and 51 Chianina are checked in for the open show. An ACA booth will be in the yards at the 2020 NWSS. 2020 NJHS planning is going well. Counts is going to look into getting a Chi show at the American Royal.

Dustin Hurlbut: Dustin has traveled 4,800 miles since the last meeting, visiting breeders in Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas and Nebraska. A regional show is confirmed in conjunction with the 2020 NE State Fair.

A booth is confirmed for the 2020 NWSS yards. Preparations for the ACA Sire Test are well underway.

Old Business: Egg Extravaganza: Tracy moved to adopt

the proposed Egg Extravaganza. Garrett will be the committee chair, and the rules will be finalized the first week of December.

2019 Sire Test Update: Approximately 240-260 cows will be bred the second week of December. 10 sires will be used as well as 2 reference sires.

New Business: It was agreed to present a half page ACJ ad as a door prize at the annual meeting.

Fractions vs Percentages: Sheets presented information on tracking pedigrees with fractions versus percentages.

Junior Joint Ownership: Dunklau talked about a joint ownership program for AJCA members. He will bring a proposal to the spring board meeting.

NAILE National Show Results

M

embers and breeders from across the country converged on Louisville, Ky., Nov. 14-21 for the ACA National Show.

The week was full of activities, including shows, the annual membership meeting, boards of director meetings and the Stall Crawl. The coffee and hot chocolate were hot and ready at the booth daily and visitors could find the ACA staff at the booth ready to answer questions and visit.

More than 90 head of cattle were exhibited in the junior show on Sunday, Nov. 17 with Matt Copeland serving as judge.

Taking home Grand Champion Chiangus Female and Bred & Owned Chiangus Female honors was MD Ms Style 110G, exhibited by Tatum Miller, Big Spring, Texas. Reserve Grand Champion Chiangus Female went to BMW YNot Finesse 424F ET, exhibited by Bailey Tomson, Westport, Ind., while the Reserve Grand Champion Bred & Owned Chiangus Female was awarded to GOP Greta Garbo 910G, exhibited by Kennedy Evans, Campbellsburg, Ky. In the Chianina show, Sara Sullivan, Dunlap, Iowa, exhibited the Grand Champion Female, JSUL Who Dat Steiner 8266F ET, and the heifer was also the Grand Champion Bred & Owned Chianina Female. The Reserve Grand Champion Female banner was awarded to SRR Miss 5F ET, exhibited by Hadley Dunklau, Wayne, Neb. Kylie Pickard, Hastings, Mich., finished her Sunday strong by claiming Reserve Grand Champion Bred & Owned Female honors with PICK Layla 10F. Monday brought the annual Ladies Auxiliary luncheon and the Stall Crawl social that evening. Tuesday was meeting day, with the ACA Board of Directors holding their meeting, followed by the Annual Membership Meeting. During the meeting, results from the membership survey were shared, as well as an update on the state of the association. We also handed out awards to the All-Americans and Show Animals of the Year, as well as retiring board members and 40 year members.

The Open Show took place Wednesday, Nov. 20 in Freedom Hall. The father-son duo of Brigham and Greg Stewart sorted the more than 80 head exhibited. The Chiangus Bull show started the day with Katy Satree leading DAJS The Fixer 132 to the winners circle as Grand Champion Chiangus Bull. Higgins Farms exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Chiangus Bull, HIGG Timeless 8F ET. In the tough Chiangus Female Show, Winegardner Show Cattle bred both the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Females. Thomas Willis, Alderson, W.Va., exhibited the Grand Champion Chiangus Female, BMW Ace 429F ET, while Bailey Tomson, Westport, Ind., exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Chiangus Female, BMW YNot Finesse 424F ET. The Chianina Show followed the Chiangus division, and was another strong showing of superb quality cattle. The Grand Champion Chianina Bull, JACO Tap It, was exhibited by the Dave Felton Family, Huntington, Ind. & Jacobs Cattle, Markle, Ind. Spencer Goettemoeller, Winchester, Ind., exhibited a bred & owned entry, GOET Cherries & Berries, to the Reserve Grand Champion Chianina Bull honors.

The Chianina Female show was a repeat of the Junior Show with JSUL Who Dat Steiner 8366F ET, exhibited by Sara Sullivan, Dunlap, Iowa, claiming Grand Champion Chianina Female honor, while SRR Miss 5F ET, exhibited by Hadley Dunklau, took home the Reserve Grand Champion Chianina Female title.

The quality of the cattle exhibited at the 2019 ACA National Show was exceptional and we congratulate all the exhibitors in both the junior and open shows.

Annual Awards

Show Animals of the Year

E

ach year the ACA awards Show Animal of the Year honors to the bull and heifer in both the Chianina and Chiangus breeds that have accrued the greatest number of All-American Points. To qualify, they must be exhibited in at least three point shows and points are calculated from the five highest placing qualifying shows. (A qualifying show is a state show, state fair, NAILE, National Western, Fort Worth Stock Show and the Chiangus Classic.)

The Chianina Show Bull of the Year was awarded to DAJS Unyielding 924. This popular champion was bred by Payton Herzog and owned and shown by Katy Satree. Unyielding is a son of Unstoppable out of DAJS Diana 124 (sired by Hannibal.) Doug and Jane Satree were on hand to receive their award.

WSCC Josie’s Ace 29F ET was the Chianina Show Heifer of the Year. Royally bred, she is a Silveira’s Style 9303 daughter out of a Winegardner cow (BMW Ms. Ace 326C). In this case, both the heifer and her exhibitor share the same name. Josie was bred by Whitney Walker and owned by Josie Wilkins.

In the Chiangus Division, the Show Bull of the Year was awarded to VBS Manly 184F. This popular bull, bred and owned by VBS Farms from Kentucky, is the best numbered, highest performing Chiangus bull shown in 2019, and perhaps in recent years. Sired by the reliable HA Cowboy Up 5405 and out of VBS Ms May 2778 (a daughter of Aces Commander), this bull weighed a ton when paraded on the green shavings the next day.

EVNS / TR Enchanted 707E (“Bertha”) was the Chiangus Show Heifer of the Year. A consistent champion in 2019, she is sired by Colburn Primo 5153 and out of TR Bubbles PCA. (“Bubbles”, a daughter of Trail Blazer, out of TR Nellie, is a full sister to Winegardner’s leading brood matron TR/TKM Y Not). Enchanted (aka “Bertha”) was bred and owned by Laurel Culp (with help from Kelsey and Derek Evans.)

rent got his start with Chianina through 4-H. His first major purchase came in 1977, when he obtained the Bedford Farms herd at Shelbyville, Tenn. Included in this purchase were percentage and full blood Chianina. Brent currently runs 75 mother cows consisting of Chianina, Maine-Anjou, Simmental and Angus. They focus on raising females that are geared toward the show ring. They also raise corn and soybeans.

He has continued raising Chianina cattle for the “look” that it takes to be successful in the show ring segment of the business. His favorite memories involving Chianina cattle include making many life-long friends that he has come to know through the years.

Brent’s favorite bull is BFI LORENZO, a full blood Chianina bull, bred in Canada, who was obtained in 1977. Lorenzo worked as well as any AI sire he ever used in terms of consistency and uniformity in his calf crops.

When asked what advice he would impart to new breeders, Brent said “The advice I would give new breeders is to believe in what you are doing. Study the numbers but never forget that most cattle in the industry are sold on eye appeal. Raise cattle that you enjoy going out in the pasture and looking at. “ Brent shared: “Over the years, I have worked with many different people in the ACA and have always found the staff to be the most helpful of any of the breed associations that I have been involved with.”

Ace High Ranch – Greg, Annette & Tyler Gruhn Lanark, Illinois

G

reg was introduced to the Chianina breed from showing steers. In 1975 he won the “last” Chicago International Livestock Exposition with a half blood Chianina steer named Ace High. He took the winnings and purchased 40 cows; in 1977 he purchased a ¾ black Chianina bull from Dick & Sharon Carlson of Mile High Chianina.

Greg continues to raise Chianina cattle because he likes the growth and performance of the breed. The Chianina influence makes the club calves more upheaded and showy.

Today, Ace High Ranch runs a 150 head cow/calf operation of registered Angus, Chianina, Simmental and Club Calf dams.

He recalls that his favorite memory involving Chianina cattle occurred in 1975 when he showed a half-blood Chianina steer, named Ace High. He was sired by Fonto and went on to be named the Grand Champion at the last International Livestock Exposition held in Chicago. The Chianina Association awarded registered steers a cash award if they won a major show.

His favorite Chianina cattle included his steer, Ace High and the full blood bull, Ficoso.

Greg shared the following advice for new breeders: “The only way that you can continue to improve your herd is to evaluate your cattle and make management decisions where you see a weakness. Chianina cattle can be crossed with many breeds to produce cattle that are useful to the Beef industry.”

toltz Exotics started breeding full blood Chianina bulls to Angus cows in the 70s for their size and show ring look. They continued raising Chianina cattle for the show ring and this year hosted their 46th consecutive club calf sale! Jack believes that a little Chianina blood is required in order to give them “that cocky look.”

Today, Stoltz Exotics calves out 150 cows and 30 bred heifers a year.

Jack recalls his favorite memories involving Chianina cattle in this way: “We have been blessed to have many Supreme Champion Bulls at the Cattlemen’s Classic in Kearney, and the top sale bulls in Denver, at the Black Hills Stock Show at Rapid City, the Kansas Beef Expo, and Grand Champion Steers and Market Heifers at the AK-SAR-BEN. It’s hard to single one out as the most meaningful.”

The bull “Husker” (Husker 45X CAX) #187352, was his favorite animal. This Sugar Ray son out of a Black Power Play x Maine-Anjou female was leased to ABS for many years.

Jack shares the following advice for new breeders: “Keep your dreams alive. Lead don’t follow. If you follow you are always behind.”

Jack recalls his 40 years in the ACA in this way: “It’s been a great ride and an enjoyable job. One of the best parts is meeting all the greatest Chip – Top Selling Percentage Bull at the 1988 National people in the world – the show ring people. The success we have had Western Chianina Bull Sale. would have been impossible without them.”

Comer Cattle Co. – Terry & Sue Comer Lynn, Indiana

orty years ago, the Comers looked around the county at the different breeds available and decided to go with something different. They chose Chi’s and bought their first Chi heifer in Louisville at the National Sale in Louisville from Blue Sky Farms. They liked the breed and the beef it produced.

Terry and Sue became active in the association on both the state and national levels. One of their favorite memories was traveling to Lebanon, Ind., to their first state Chianina meeting. They were greeted right away by Dale Sheets, and Joe and Janet Whittington. These folks took the Comers under their wings and solid friendships (that remain to this day) with their families developed.

One of the greatest aspects about the ACA has been the people they have met and the friends they have made over the past 40 years. They traveled many miles to shows when their daughters were old enough, and they have attended many National Junior Heifer Shows. The Comers say they have enjoyed making so many memories over these years and have met so many wonderful people in this association.

Comer Cattle Co. is located eight miles south of Union City, Ind., on State Road 227. While they have raised Chianina cattle for 40 years, they have retired their cattle program and turned it over to their two daughters, Lindsey & Jessica. Lindsey and Cody are the parents of Cade, 6, and Hailey, 21 months. Jessica and Ryan have Claire, age 8, and twins Tanner and Jase, 3 ½. Terry and Sue are anxiously waiting for the day their grandchildren can start showing. (Editor’s note: The NJHS has no minimum age; the next generation can start showing anytime. Lima would be a great option!)

When asked what advisc they would give to new breeders, the Comers said, “Keep up the good quality of the Chi influenced cattle. Our breed still stands out above all the rest. Our experience with the Chi breed has been nothing but rewarding.”

ob & Kelly got started raising Chianina cattle through 4-H and FFA projects. Kelly brought her first Chi heifer from GlenKirk Farms, Maysville, Mo., and Rob got his first one from Jack Phillips, owner of the American Herdsman Institution, Ozark, Ark. Today, they manage 1,500 acres of timber and wildlife along with 1,000 acres of pasture and hay land for Roddy Sturdivant, owner of RSE Farms. We also have our herd of cattle which consist of 120 mama cows.

When asked why they have continued to raise Chianina cattle for 40 years, they said, “We like the longevity and eye appeal of the Chianina cattle along with their ability to add growth and pounds to their offspring.”

In 1997 they exhibited both National Champion Bulls in Louisville, Ky. RSE Eagle Scout was selected Champion Chiangus and RSE Cesar won Champion Chianina. However, there’s no doubt that Eagle Scout is their favorite! Scout was named National Champion Chiangus Bull three years in a row, 1996, 1997 and 1998!

Rob and Kelly have been involved in breeding and raising Chi cattle for over 40 years and have witnessed the changes the breed has gone through over these years, from the large frame cattle of the 80s and 90s to the moderate size of today.

Their advice to new breeders is to breed cattle that work for your area of the country and don’t chase the latest trends.

Lots of folks have told me that I need to visit Chuck’s place and see it. I looked forward to this trip like a kid anticipates Christmas and I was not disappointed.

The amount of organization and planning required to pen 105 long yearling and two year old bulls of three breeds is impressive.

The pens are carefully mapped out, accessed by alleys and lanes, and the cattle are moved into their pens easily, quietly and without a lot of fuss. All of the bulls are handled by people on horseback.

Chuck and Katie and their families put a lot of effort into hospitality. Some of the best Chiangus cattle were sold to breeders in other states. However, the majority of the bulls were sold to repeat customers; many of whom were their neighbors. There were people attending the CK Sale that had been doing so since its inception. This was an event; an opportunity to showcase their breeding program, and to be rewarded for the fruits of their labors. And rewarded, they were.

The morning after the sale, Chuck took Dustin and I on a tour of the ranch. We didn’t have enough time to see everything, but what we did see was impressive! Each pasture is named for a state (there are actually 65 different pastures!). They run three breeds: Chiangus, Angus and SimAngus. Cows are grouped by breed and age; bred heifers, 2 year old cows, 3 year old cows, and mature cows. Every cow is scored for docility and udder quality at calving. Cows that

don’t make the grade are moved to the recipient herd. (Interestingly, there were several instances where a “recip” didn’t take an egg, was bred to a Chiangus bull, and raised a bull calf good enough to go into the bull sale.)

I was very happy to cover the “Harvest of Excellence” Sale for the second consecutive year. After 23 years, Brad Winegardner and his family really know how to do it up right. I arrived on Friday afternoon, just before dark, and had enough time to get through about half of the pens before the daylight waned.

Every lot was an open heifer calf, so junior members were the primary target audience. One of the details that the Winegardners attended to was an array of activities for kids. Toys, farm sets and several motorized vehicles were available and put to very good use.

(Santa will be making a special delivery because of Brooks’ sale experience!) Additionally, this was the first sale that I’d ever attended where a kid-friendly meal choice was also served as a menu option.

Ali Muir catered the evening meal (as well as lunch on sale day), and the food alone made the trip well worth the drive.

When Kevin Wendt rapped the gavel for the final time, 45 heifers had averaged $11,617.78 to gross a very impressive $522,800.

Seventeen heifers brought a five digit figure.

The 14 highest selling heifers averaged $25,642.86 and were all either Chianina or Chiangus.

Winegardners have two of the most well-known and productive Chiangus cows in the business. Of the 45 heifers sold, these two

There is a lot to impress about the Harvest of Excellence Sale. Of course, the cattle are impeccable. A tremendous set, exceptionally well presented, healthy and quiet. Winegardners pay attention to the details; nothing is overlooked. Things go off without a hitch.

Everyone has a job and understands their role. They take the “team concept” to a new level.

But these are things that one expects when you go to one of the premier sales in the country. I expect the cattle to be phenomenally good, the catalog to be professionally printed, the food to be delicious and well-served and the sales crew to be efficient and accommodating. What sets this sale apart is that its clear (at least to me) that the cattle aren’t really what are important at this event. Sure; everyone comes to see and buy a Winegardner heifer.

But what’s really important to Brad and Melanie is their family.

And the Winegardner family extends far beyond the blood and marital ties that bind them together. When you buy a Winegardner heifer, you become part of their family.

I didn’t go to the 23rd Annual Harvest of Excellence Sale with the intention of bringing home a heifer. But I did enjoy watching Brad interact with many different people (including my granddaughter) and understand how people feel compelled to do business with him.
