CHIANINA CONNECTION by Dustin Hurlbut, CEO, American Chianina Association
I
t is hard to believe how quickly this year has moved. It seems like just yesterday I was writing, “See you this winter in Oklahoma City,” and now we are already at the beginning of August. We had an outstanding National Junior Heifer Show in Grand Island, Neb. The weather was excellent throughout the week, and our goal remains the same each year: to create a strong family experience for everyone who comes through the gate. It is encouraging to see our numbers continue to grow. This show would not be possible without our dedicated staff and interns, who put in countless hours to make the week successful. The days are long, but seeing exhibitors and families have such a positive experience makes it all worthwhile. Thank you to every family and exhibitor who helped make it one of the best weeks of the year. We look forward to seeing everyone in Louisville, Ky., for Lego to Louisville in June of 2027. We also have a busy fall ahead. Fall sales are just around the corner and the fall and winter show circuit begins in October at the American Royal. This year’s event will be held in the new facility, which should be exciting for everyone involved. A couple
of weeks later, we will head to Louisville for our National Show and annual meeting. If you have not reviewed the schedule yet, I am excited to share that our National Show will once again be held in Freedom Hall. Be sure to review the schedule of events, as both show days and the annual meeting have shifted. As you wean calves this fall, please keep the -C- The Difference Sale in Oklahoma City in mind. The consignment deadline will fall in mid-November. Last year’s sale was strong, and we are looking forward to another successful event in 2027. If you are interested in consigning, please reach out to me or Tyler Humphrey. There are many positive things happening across the association, and we encourage members who are interested in serving on the Board of Directors to submit an application. Please reach out to Heather or me for more details. We currently have a strong, diverse group of people serving on the board, and if you believe you can contribute to that leadership, we would welcome hearing from you. Enjoy the rest of your summer and I look forward to seeing you this fall!

BOARDS OF DIRECTORS
A WORD FROM THE BOARD Raising The Bar: An Historic Summer
by Nate Tice, Secretary & At Large Director
T
his summer’s National Junior Heifer Show in Grand Island marked a milestone moment for the Association. Record-breaking participation, outstanding cattle quality and incredible family engagement demonstrated what many of us have long believed: the future of the Chianina breed has never been brighter. As a member of the Board of Directors, I have had the privilege of watching this organization evolve over the years. What we witnessed in Grand Island was not simply a successful junior national. It was the result of years of strategic leadership, dedicated volunteers, passionate breeders and a staff committed to creating opportunities for our youth and members. The growth of our junior program reflects the strength of the entire Chianina breed in the industry. Families traveled from across the country because they believe in this breed and the values it represents. Beyond the showring, lifelong relationships were built. These experiences are shaping the next generation of cattlemen and women who will lead our industry in the years ahead. Record numbers are not achieved by accident. They are the product of a board and leadership team focused on growth, innovation and member value.
Equally important is the tremendous work of our association staff. Their dedication, professionalism and passion are evident in every event, publication, membership service and youth activity. The seamless execution of a national event of this magnitude is something many organizations can only aspire to achieve. Their efforts often happen behind the scenes, but they are the driving force that turns vision into reality. As we celebrate the success of Grand Island, we should also recognize what it represents: momentum. The American Chianina Association is building something special. Membership engagement is strong, junior participation continues to grow and the enthusiasm surrounding the breed is reaching new heights. The record-setting summer we experienced in Grand Island was more than a successful event. It was proof that when strong leadership, dedicated staff, passionate breeders and committed families work toward a common goal, extraordinary things happen. The future of the Chianina breed is bright, and together we are taking it to levels that many once only dreamed possible! Now, let’s get ready to LEGO in Louisville next Summer!

A WORD FROM THE BOARD
A Lot To Be Excited About
by Justin Tracy, At Large Director
I
n this area of the country, we are currently facing many challenges in the cow calf industry. In Nebraska, the county where I live is in the midst of the fourth driest year on record, accompanied by record high temperatures. It can be a little disorienting driving around the county right now. In a place where cows normally outnumber people ten to one, this year looks quite different. Our lush green summer grazing grounds typically peppered with fleshy cow-calf pairs have been replaced with brown, barren and empty pastures. Herds are being downsized, calves are going to early markets, and cows have been shipped far and wide to available lease grass. But like I always say, “if ranching was easy, everybody would do it." For all of the uncontrollable pitfalls that come with raising livestock, there is one thing that becomes more certain the longer I do it; Chianina cattle can weather any storm. The lack of grass in our area saw us haying our cows all spring and summer and these cattle have proven over and over the advantages that come with the easily sustainable, heavy milking Chianina female. When conditions were tough and provisions were fewer, these cows still put extra pounds of production into their calves and looked good doing it. Weaning our sale heifers in early August, this year’s calf crop came in as the heaviest group we’ve ever weaned, in one of the toughest years we have weathered. What a testament to the quality and sustainability of the Chianina cow! Years like this separate the hobbyists from the careerists and the resilient commercial ranchers in our area are still seeing reason for optimism with continued record high feeder cattle prices. We see plenty of optimism in the show cattle industry too. Sale season is just around the corner and we are seeing a lot of reason to be positive. The Junior National was a huge success with large numbers of participants from all across the country, driving up demand for quality Chianina females at all price points. Personally, we are already experiencing more interest in Chi-influenced cattle than in recent years, and it feels like the Chianina sale season will be a successful one. Chianina quality is high, demand is increasing, and prices are projected to trend upward. That leaves us all with a lot to be excited about!
Reminder!
The ACA Board of Directors needs you! There are 4 positions open this fall. The Southeast Region, Northwest Region and 2 at-large positions will be elected. hat a wonderful summer it has been for the American Chianina Association! After concluding a record summer in Grand Island, the enthusiasm and excitement churning in the breed is as strong and high as ever. It’s exciting to witness and I sure hope it continues. The Ladies Auxiliary is grateful for that same enthusiasm, specifically regarding our scholarship program and royalty. As summer comes to a close and a new school year begins, we want to wish our Chianina youth a successful and exciting year ahead. We especially want to congratulate this year’s scholarship winners and new royalty! Josie Ritter of Neb., Kathryn Naber of Neb., and Madilyn McCullough of Texas were each awarded scholarships from the Ladies Auxiliary. We are also excited to have two young ladies serving as our 2026-2027 ACA National Princess. Brooklyn DeBerry of Texas and Annaleigh Pohlman of Ohio will be representing the breed this year. Be sure to look for them at shows around the country! Congratulations to all these young ladies. Your hard work, dedication and commitment to the Chianina breed is inspiring. We are proud of each of you and look forward to seeing all you accomplish. As we turn the page to fall, may it be filled with crisp mornings, exciting shows and events, time spent with family and friends and plenty of success in the classroom and the show ring. A New Year, A New Perspective by Kaylee Jennings, President
W
hen I first walked into a Chianina Junior National as a young exhibitor, I thought it was all about the cattle. Like many of us, I spent countless hours preparing at home, hoping my hard work would pay off in the show ring. As the years have gone by, I’ve realized that the banners and buckles eventually become memories, but the friendships, mentors, leadership opportunities and lessons gained through this association last a lifetime. Today, I have the incredible honor of serving as the 2026–2027 American Junior Chianina Association President. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly, and one that fills me with gratitude every time I put on my purple jacket. Serving on the Junior Board has allowed me to see our association from a different perspective. I’ve had the opportunity to help plan Junior Nationals, represent the Chianina breed at leadership conferences across the country and work alongside an amazing group of directors who all share the same goal: creating opportunities for every junior member. While many members see the games, contests and activities during Junior Nationals, there are countless hours of planning behind the scenes to make those experiences possible. Knowing that our work helps create memories for younger exhibitors makes every meeting, phone call and late-night planning session worthwhile. One of the greatest joys of serving on the board has been watching our younger members grow. I see so much of myself in the “littles” who are attending their first Junior National, stepping into the show ring with nervous excitement, or making their first friend outside of their home state. Watching those same juniors return year after year with more confidence, new leadership skills and lifelong friendships reminds me why this organization is so special. It isn’t just about raising cattle; it’s about raising the next generation of leaders. As President, my goal is simple: I want every junior member to feel welcomed, included and excited to be part of the Chianina family. Whether you’re attending your first Junior National or your last, I hope you leave knowing you belong here. I want our board to continue creating meaningful activities, encouraging leadership and building an environment where every member has the confidence to step outside their comfort zone, make new friends and discover their potential. None of this would be possible without the support of our advisors, parents, volunteers, sponsors and Board of Directors. Thank you for believing in the next generation and investing your time, resources and encouragement into each of us. Because of your support, juniors like me have the opportunity to develop into the leaders our industry needs. As we begin another exciting year together, I encourage each of you to get involved, introduce yourself to someone new, volunteer for an activity and never be afraid to step up and lead. You never know where one opportunity might take you.
AJCA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
GAME ON: Wrapping Up an Incredible Junior Nationals by Remi Earnhart, Vice President
G
ame On Grand Island was one for the record books! On behalf of the AJCA Junior Board, I want to thank everyone who joined us in Grand Island, Neb., for an incredible 2026 AJCA Junior Nationals. It was a week filled with competition, learning, laughter and memories that will last for years to come. Our game-themed week brought plenty of excitement, but the true highlight was seeing our junior members come together to celebrate the Chianina breed. One of the best parts of the week was watching exhibitors from across the country showcase the cattle they have worked so hard to prepare. Whether they were stepping into the ring for the first time or returning with years of experience, every exhibitor represented the future of our breed with dedication and sportsmanship. It was rewarding to see the friendships, encouragement and support shared throughout the week, both inside and outside the show ring. This year, the Junior Board also introduced a new event, the Chi Cup. We were excited to add something new to the schedule that encouraged participation and friendly competition, and we appreciate everyone who took part and helped make it a success. As another Junior Nationals comes to a close, our board is already looking ahead to next year. We are excited to announce that the 2027 AJCA Junior Nationals will be held June 18-24 in Louisville, Ky. We are already making plans and can’t wait to welcome everyone back for another week of competition, education and fun. Thank you to all of our exhibitors, families, volunteers, sponsors and the American Chianina Association for your continued support of the junior program. Events like Junior Nationals wouldn’t be possible without each of you, and we are grateful for everything you do to invest in the next generation of Chianina breeders.

Klippenstein Honored with Beef Checkoff Visionary Award G len Klippenstein of Maysville, MO, was honored with the Cattlemen’s Beef Board’s (CBB) sixth annual Beef Checkoff Visionary Award on July 14 during the Checkoff Highlights Session at the 2026 Cattle Industry Summer Business Meeting in Denver, CO. This award recognizes an individual in the beef industry who has demonstrated exemplary support of and commitment to the Checkoff’s goals and vision. “Glen is one of the true Beef Checkoff pioneers,” said Cheryl DeVuyst, 2026 chair of the CBB. “He’s a lifelong cattleman, and he stepped up when he saw beef demand declining in the 1970s and 1980s. Glen’s ideas and achievements changed our industry for the better in so many ways, and he truly deserves this year’s Beef Checkoff Visionary Award.” Born on a diversified crop and livestock farm in Saskatchewan, Canada, Klippenstein and his family moved to Pennsylvania in 1948. After graduating as the valedictorian of his high school class, Klippenstein studied at Penn State University under the mentorship of famous cattleman and professor Herman Purdy, a farm adviser to then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower. After graduating from Penn State, Klippenstein farmed in Pennsylvania for several years and started to build a herd of high-quality Hereford cattle. During this time, Klippenstein met his future wife, Linda. In 1966, Klippenstein forged a partnership with his friend, Kirk Pendleton. The new venture prompted the Klippensteins to move their family and farm from Pennsylvania to Maysville, where Klippenstein and Pendleton launched Glenkirk Farms. Over the next 28 years, Klippenstein’s work in Hereford breeding made a tremendous impact. He sold approximately 7,000 bulls, 7,000 females and tens of thousands of units of semen to 22 countries. During that time, Klippenstein also imported some of the first fullblood Simmental cattle into the U.S. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Klippenstein saw beef demand declining and strongly believed the industry needed to take action. He and other producers began to push for a $1-perhead national Beef Checkoff. Klippenstein served as one of the original members of the Beef Board, which held its first meeting in the fall of 1986. “We were losing producers like crazy,” Klippenstein recalled back in 1990-91. “So, we took the bull by the horns. And we got Congress to help us, which they finally did through legislation. And a whole checkoff program was begun.”
24 | CHIANINA JOURNAL | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2026
As chair of the CBB in 1990-91, Klippenstein helped establish the rigorous financial and auditing practices that continue to ensure Beef Checkoff funds are used appropriately. Those practices are still in use today, including rules that Checkoff contractors cannot make a profit from their work or use any funding for political purposes. Klippenstein’s innovative spirit also contributed to the development of Checkoff programs aimed at consistently providing consumers with high-quality beef. In addition to his years spent on the CBB, including as the 1990-91 chair, Klippenstein’s years of service in the cattle industry include a term as chair of the American Polled Hereford Association, six years as director of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and nine years as CEO of the American Chianina Association. His influence stretched beyond the cattle industry when he served as a Missouri state senator from 1993 through 1994. He returned to the legislature as a Missouri state representative from 2010 through 2012. During his years in office, Klippenstein consistently educated fellow lawmakers and constituents about the value of agriculture. Today, Klippenstein and his wife, Linda, have four children and nine grandchildren. He and his son Brian continue to actively manage a small Hereford herd near Maysville. “Glen is a prime example of a true cattleman who saw an opportunity to step up for his industry,” said Greg Hanes, CEO of the CBB. “He’s been absolutely tireless over the years, between raising great cattle and sharing his love and respect for agriculture. All of us at the Cattlemen’s Beef Board congratulate Glen on yet another achievement as he receives the 2026 Beef Checkoff Visionary Award.” — CBB

All AI sires and donor dams must be DNA parent verified before calves will be registered. 2. All ACA registered AI sires will be required to be tested for genetic abnormalities recognized as monitor status by the ACA based on breed make up before calves will be registered in herds outside that of the current owner, unless they are Expected Free by Pedigree. If the AI Sire is not a registered ACA sire but is registered with another
Bulletin association, the sire’s status for breed relevant genetic abnormalities must be known per their breed makeup. If AI sire is “commercial”, it must be tested for all genetic abnormalities the ACA monitors. 3. Embryo donor dams currently registered in the ACA herd book will only be required to be tested for genetic abnormalities of which they have been identified as being a suspect. Donor dams registered with another association must meet those association’s requirements. Unregistered (Commercial) donor dams must be tested for all genetic abnormalities regardless of breed makeup. B. All embryo donor cows must be blood typed or DNA tested. When parentage is questioned, blood typing or DNA testing will be required and the questioning party shall bear all the cost. For blood typing or DNA testing materials you must contact the ACA office for instructions or referral to a laboratory approved by the ACA. C. DNA on All Herd Sires 1. ALL AI ACA registered bulls born after January 1, 2017 must be DNA parent verified before their progeny can be registered. For questions on DNA, please contact the office at 816-431-2808. Jennifer or Stephanie will be happy to assist you.

In Memory
Jan Baxter Johnson, age 81 of Dunlap, Tennessee passed away Saturday, May 30, 2026. Born on October 8, 1944, in Knoxville, TN, Jan is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph W. and Georgia Belle Johnson; his sister, Becky Johnson Smith; and his beloved son, Jeffrey Baxter Johnson. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 57 years, Sandra Alder Johnson; daughter, Kelly Johnson; son, Brandon (Daphne) Johnson; and grandchildren, Parks Broyles, Alex (Michael) Loveless, Baylor Johnson and Brooks Johnson. Jan was a 1962 graduate of Sequatchie Co. High School. He
received his B.S. degree in Physical Education Secondary Education and M.S. in Psychology from Middle Tennessee State University. He began his teaching career in January of 1967 in Jacksonville, FL. He returned to Tennessee following a single semester and began teaching at Jasper Middle School where he was the head girls basketball coach for 1968-1969. He then transferred to Whitwell High School where he served as the head football coach during the 1970 and 1971 seasons. In 1972, he took over the running of Johnson Oil Co. as a third-generation owner and operator. He ran Johnson Oil for 34 years. In 2006, he sold the business after 91 years in operation. His love for Sequatchie County and its people was shown by his service in the following capacities. He was a member of the Dunlap City Commission, the Sequatchie County Equalization Board, the election commission, the library board and the Industrial Development Board. He served as President of the Lions Club, Foreman of the Grand Jury and Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Sequatchee Valley Electric Coop. He was Alumnus of the Year for Sequatchie County Schools in 2005. Beyond Sequatchie County, he also served as a member of the board of directors for Grandview Hospital, President of the Southeastern Oil Jobbers Cooperative for Pure Gasoline and President of the Tennessee Chiangus Association. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Dunlap, Tenn., where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He also led several pastor search committees. It was his great joy to lead many youth trips to Panama City, Fla. Jan used his love of teaching and coaching by doing so within the community. He touched many lives by coaching little league football and baseball. He loved to share stories of coaching girls’ slow pitch softball in the summers. Jan and his son, Jeff, served as the community volunteer head football coaches for Sequatchie County Middle School where they led their teams to several district championships. Jan and Sandy were the first members of the Johnson family to create a home on Riverbend Farm. Riverbend Farm was purchased by Jan’s grandparents in 1921. It has remained in the Johnson family ever since. It was designated a Tennessee Century Farm in 2021. His family continues to lovingly serve as its caretakers. The beauty of the land and its cattle will remain as part of Jan’s legacy for years to come and future generations. Memorial contributions can be made to the Pat Summitt Foundation, c/o Sequatchie Valley Walk for Alzheimer’s, PO Box 651, Dunlap, TN 37327. AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2026| CHIANINA JOURNAL | 91
