Not sure if I am totally recovered yet from the National Junior Heifer Show, but I hope you are! It is always a fast-paced, busy week that I enjoy. When we talk about NJHS, every year no matter where we go across the United States we always say it’s going to rain at least one day, be hot and humid and be a great time for all! We may not be able to control Mother Nature, but we always work to make it a great week for the kids, parents and everyone in attendance. The 2024 NJHS was no different! From the opening ceremonies to the last trailer out the gate, the kids had a blast! The heat sure seemed to make us all a little more exhausted than normal, but nonetheless, a great time was had by all! Congratulations to all the exhibitors at the NJHS whether you showed cattle or were involved in the contests.
We as an association are very lucky to have a junior advisor like Heather who goes the extra mile on everything she does for the NJHS. She works tirelessly on the little details to make it an unforgettable experience for the exhibitors. We have also added Rilee Hall to the staff as our social media/communications director. She stepped right in to help with the NJHS as well and is a great fit to our team. If you have not met Rilee yet make sure you do because you’ll find she’s a great person who is passionate about what she does.
And now, just like that it seems everyone is weaning calves and getting ready for state fairs and fall sale season. It sure seems that we just finished up with Oklahoma City, Denver and Ft. Worth. This time of the year is full of state fairs and preparing for next years projects. I will be out and about traveling looking at calves this fall so if you need anything or have any questions on something please reach out.
I would like to remind members that the Board of Directors nomination forms are due September 15. If you are
passionate about the breed and want to serve the membership, I encourage you to get your nomination form filled out and sent in. The Board usually meets the beginning of April at the office in Platte City, then we have a July and September meeting via zoom, then meet again in person in Louisville before our annual membership meeting. It’s a great way to give back to the association and be involved in moving the breed forward.
The Cow Catch Up deadline for this year is coming up August 31, so if you have multiple generations to catch up on, now is the time to get that done. It is also a great time to get DNA processed. This time of the year the lab seems to have a quicker turnaround time, so as you are working and weaning calves, but thinking ahead to what you might consider consigning to the National Sale in Oklahoma City in January. Then contact the office and the girls can get you set up with all the items you need to process the needed DNA. As a reminder, the National Sale consignment deadline is November 15, with photos due December 1. Be sure to keep this in mind as it happens during our National Show events in Louisville.
I also want to take a little time to brag on our Junior Board. We have a great set of junior board members who step up and work hard all year long, but especially the week of the NJHS. They work tirelessly to help make the week go smoothly and we appreciate their hard work. If you see these junior board members throughout the year, be sure to stop and talk with them. You will quickly see our association is in great hands and has a bright future.
I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming fall shows and events. Be sure to take note of all the entry deadlines quickly approaching. Wishing everyone a great state fair season!
See you down the road.

It brings me great excitement to report on the 2024 Chianina Junior Nationals in this months journal. As I reflect back on the exciting week that many of us experienced in Springfield, Mo., I can’t help but be excited for the future of our breed and its membership. For the Chianina breed this years Junior National boasted record numbers. Total entries were reported at 667 headed! There are so many people who need credited for the success of this years show.
I would like to start by thanking our great staff in the office and in the field. When it comes to our staff every single detail of the show was covered to perfection. Families were welcomed on arrival and the organization of stalling was ultra smooth. At the show ring all the decorations, awards and sponsorship recognition were handled with great detail. The pride that Dustin, Heather and Rilee have for our breed and hosting a great show was on full display. I would also like to say a special thank you as well to the staff at the Maine Anjou Association for all the work and long hours they put in to making our joint show such a great success as well. It was also exciting to see all the t-shirts, awards and freebies our staff worked so hard to get donated for all the exhibitors. Every exhibitor who attended left the show with bags filled with shirts, water bottles and other cool items.
Our junior board would also rank at the top of the list as well when it comes to the success of this years show. To quote our Director of Shows and Activities, Heather Counts says, “The junior board plays a crucial role in the success of the week and steps up to any challenge presented to them. They work long hours and walk many miles in the showring to ensure the success of the show.” Thank you junior board and Heather for all the time you spend helping our Chianina youth!
Perhaps one of the most important mentions of this article are the families who attend the show and their love for showing and raising Chianina and Chi-influenced cattle. We appreciate your enthusiasm for our breed and most of all the special young people you bring to this great event. Their passion for the contests, the show ring, for each other and for our way of life are on full display the entire week and gives us older people the satisfaction of saying, “This is why we are here!” I think we can all agree that the future of our industry is in great hands after watching our young people showcase their many talents and seeing their love for stock shows and cattle.
After days of competition the icing on the cake for the show had to be our all new Supreme Champion selection that included all the bred and owned champions along with the champion from the owned Chi, Chiangus and Chi-Composite show. The champions in our inaugural Grand Drive made it through some of the largest and toughest classes, divisions and champion drives that our breed has ever seen!
In conclusion, it would be fair to say that our forward thinking staff, membership, and our love for young people, along with the outstanding Chi genetics that are being bred right now have made the Chianina breed one of the hottest things going. Thank You to all who contribute!

Ihave only missed two Junior Nationals since 2000, so this summer, especially the third week of June, was slightly different than usual. Some of my best memories are from my summers spent all over the country at Chi Junior Nationals. I had always heard growing up that parents will do anything for their kids, and in this case, I believe it! My family has spent more hours at a ballpark since March 1st than we have in our barn. And while that’s hard to admit, the saying holds true, “It’s for the kids”!
I want to extend a thank you to Ken Culp, Ashli Stalvey and Lacy Harper for assisting with the royalty interviews and selecting the new ACA National Queen, Liana Teague, from Florida. Kendall Harper from Georgia was also chosen as the new ACA National Princess. I look forward to watching them represent us over the next year at various shows and events.
It wouldn’t be an article of mine without thanking the past royalty who retired at the NJHS. Macey Banter of Indiana and Hadley Dunklau of Nebraska did such a wonderful job representing our auxiliary throughout the 2023-2024 show season, and we couldn’t have been more proud of the job they did. Thank you, ladies!
And finally, we had record applications for our annual scholarship. Congratulations to Klayton Bremer, Parker Dicks, Payton Rodgers, Josie Wilkins, Mikayla McDonald, Kaylee Jennings and Rylie Lanum. Best of luck in school!
As state fair season comes and goes, fall approaches, and fall/winter majors begin, I send my best to each one of you, and your families, as you travel, compete and make memories. You only have 18 summers with your kids before college starts, so regardless of how you spend them, make it count!

“For
by Adrienne Bryant, President & At Large Director
“For the kids” is an expression familiar to all of us in the livestock industry. Often, it is used humorously, as in the remark, “I am so for the kids right now.” This phrase, heard frequently, took on a new significance for me after spending the best week of the summer in Springfield, “Keepin’ it Reel,” and repeatedly quoting, “for the kids.” This experience prompted me to reflect on the deeper meaning behind the phrase.
After that week in Springfield, I began reflecting on my time as a junior board member as I now enter my final year of service. It became clear to me that we truly do everything in this industry “for the kids.” Growing up in the cattle industry, I can confidently say that this community has shaped me into who I am today. What we have here is special – a community dedicated to the upbringing of high-quality cattle and even higher-quality kids. This community has always made me feel included and supported, inspiring me to give back to the breed in any way I could and to help other kids feel the same sense of belonging.
Initially, my decision to run for the junior board stemmed from a profound passion for the Chianina breed and a desire to build connections within this community. However, as I enter my final year on the board, my priorities have evolved. While
my passion for the breed and enthusiasm for meeting new people remain strong, I have come to recognize the importance of the next generation in this breed and the industry as a whole. Witnessing the enthusiasm and dedication these junior members have for the Chianina breed and the livestock business has been truly inspiring. It fills me with excitement for the future and confidence in the continued success and growth of the breed. The Chianina breed has a remarkable history, and with our collective efforts, we can ensure it has an equally remarkable future through the next generation.
Stepping into the role of President this year is truly an honor, and something I do not take lightly. My hopes for this year are very high and I hope to do much in my new position. There is much work to be done and much I hope to accomplish in my final year on the board. But I am keeping my priorities straight and ensuring everything I do is “for the kids”.

As digital papers are becoming more widely accepted at shows, members now have the option to select whether or not to have a registration paper mailed to them. When processing your registrations in DigitalBeef there is a check box for this option on the calf recording line. It will default to mailing you a paper, but if you prefer to not receive a mailed paper, simply unclick the box. If you have questions, please contact the office for assistance.
Members are reminded to pay balances due prior to logging off of DigitalBeef after processing registrations/transfers or updating memberships. Please note, registration papers will not mail if a balance is due and memberships are set back to inactive status if balance is not paid before logging out. You may still pay balances by check, but please contact to office to let us know if you will be paying that way.
At the Spring 2024 meeting, the Board of Directors voted to pull the cow/calf classes from the heifer show and select a Champion Cow/Calf Pair in additional to a Champion Heifer at all junior and open shows sponsored by the ACA. This takes effect immediately for the 2024-2025 show season. This means a Champion Heifer will be selected from the divisions within the heifer show and a cow/calf champion will be selected from the Cow/Calf class.
If you have any questions, please contact Heather at heather@ chicattle.org.

The 2024 Junior National marked the beginning of a new tradition for the American Junior Chianina Association. The first ever Supreme Champion Chianina Breeding Animal was selected from all heifer and bull champions, both owned and bred & owned. Each exhibitor paraded their animals through the ring in front of a packed crowd. A three judge panel, consisting of Dave Allan, Brady Jensen and Brandon Callis, each ranked their choices and after the tallies were completed, Hadley Dunklau’s Grand Champion Chianina Female was selected as the first ever Supreme Champion Chianina Breeding Animal. Hadley was awarded a traveling trophy and a $5,000 cash prize!
A special THANK YOU to the generous sponsors of the Supreme Champion show and awards.

Without your help, Junior Nationals would not be the success it is. The younger members watch and learn from you and your example helps energize the next generation. Great job!
Your willingness to help before, during and after the show is invaluable! We appreciate everything you did to help make the show a success! We definitely couldn’t pull off a show of this magnitude without you. Thanks again!
Thank you for choosing to spend a week of your summer with us each year! We hope you left the show with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime! We hope you enjoyed your week in Springfield and can’t wait to see you next year!
Thank you will never be enough for all that you do to help make this week a success. Your continued generous sponsorship of the Junior National is so very appreciated and we THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for investing in the youth and future of the Chianina breed!
A special THANK YOU to the generous donors, bidders and buyers at the AJCA Fundraiser Auction during Junior Nationals! Your donations will help fund the 2025 NJHS in Louisville, Kentucky! Without your continued support our junior national shows would not be possible. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
The American Junior Chianina Association is so fortunate to have many generous & outstanding sponsors who help make the junior national a huge success each year. We appreciate their continued support of our junior program and are thankful for the partnership with them to create the most fun event of the summer. Strope, Jill Miller, Tyler Winegardner, Katy
Rucker, Neal Branscum, Keith Schrick, Nate Tice, Colton Prescott & Derek Evans
Members Absent – Jeff Miller
Staff Present – Dustin Hurlbut, Heather Counts
Winegardner called the meeting to order at 8:20 am.
Officer’s Reports:
Evans gave the treasurer’s report, reviewing the P&L statements. Strope moved to accept the report; Schrick seconded; motion passed. Rucker gave the secretary’s report. Minutes of the December meeting were read. Derek moved to accept the minutes; Tice seconded; motion passed.
Committee Reports:
Show & Sale Committee – Judges list was discussed. List of names was narrowed down and tabled for discussion by full board. The committee also discussed judges for the Supreme Champion selection at Junior Nationals.
Recognition Committee – The committee presented the list of 40 year members, as well as the recipient list for annual awards to be presented at the National Show in Louisville. Building & Grounds Committee – New electric boxes were installed for code per the county/city. Evans suggested we install fences around the electrical boxes and air conditioners for safety. Interstate signage was discussed for visibility of the office. The current renters would like to install a concrete sidewalk down to the lower level for an entrance there. They would pay for the expense as it is directly to their office.
Performance & Genetic Abnormalities Committee – The board discussed adding API & TI to the EPD profiles. Hurlbut will discuss more with Dr. Weaber and bring back information to the next board meeting.
Discussion on testing for the second PHA variant. It was the consensus of the board to add this test to the genetic testing offered and update fees accordingly.
Rules & Regulations Committee – Gene editing was discussed. Currently the rules of registration do not allow for these animals to be registered. The topic was tabled until more information is available.
2024 -C- the Difference Sale – The sale grossed $97,000. Consensus was more live lots are needed for the sale. Staff instructed to work with Cattlemen’s Congress staff to get all cattle staled together to help with exposure. The Chi’s and Cocktails social had positive results.
Belted Galloway Status – The contract has been signed and we will begin handling their registrations starting January 2025. The Black Hereford contract will be up for negotiation in the fall of 2024.
Journal Mailing List – Evans moved to revert back to mailing one physical copy per address. Schrick seconded. Motion passed.
Social Media & Communication position update – Rilee has been a great addition to the staff. The social media presence has increased and all things are moving positively.
The floor was opened up for discussion on judges for the upcoming show season. Schrick moved to enter executive session; Strope seconded; motion passed. Board moved into executive session at 10:20 am. Board moved out of executive seesion at 11:05 am.
Chiangus Classic – The 2024 numbers were a little lower, but the show went very well. Discussion from the committee is to move the heifer show back to junior nationals, but keep
the bull show at one of the national open shows. The committee will continue to discuss options and the board will revisit the topic at the July meeting.
Junior National Update – Counts reported that fundraising is going well. The online auction raised $18,000. The plan is to hold the on-site auction again this year. The entry form has been updated to streamline the entry process.
Schedules for the 2024-2025 nationally sponsored shows were also discussed.
Investment Opportunities – Hurlbut discussed some investment opportunities that the board might consider. Miller made a motion for Hurlbut to look into investment opportunities for additional cash on hand. Strope seconded. Motion passed.
Cow/Calf Division – Strope made a motion that all cow/calf pairs be split into their own show, with a Champion Pair selected, at all open and junior shows effective immediately. Branscum seconded. Motion passed.
Junior All American Recognition – It was decided that recognition for Junior All-Americans should be moved to the Junior National to give the exhibitors more recognition. This change will start with the 2024-2025 show season with awards presented at the 2025 junior national.
Cow Catch Up Registration Special – Rucker moved the program run May 15 to August 31 this year. Prescott seconded. Motion passed.
