Bunny, a Chianina heifer owned by Jerry and Jean Johnson, was at the Iowa State Fair in the Avenue of Breeds run by the North Polk Future Farmers of America.

The FFA Advisor was approached by the CBS Television Crew looking for a tame animal that they could use and film for their approaching TV show which is to air October 1st, called “Wisdom of the Crowd.”

Building the Breed Andee Marston, Chief Executive Officer

It never fails we take a breath and here we are in Fall. Time just seems to move a little faster around this time of year. The days are getting shorter and soon cooler temperatures will be set in for the long haul. The office has been busy as breeders are beginning to register their calves for the upcoming sale season. Jennifer and Cheryl have been keeping up the pace and the office has never been more efficient. I find it reassuring that no matter where I go breeders always complement Jennifer and Cheryl for their customer service.

I look forward to the fall sale season as great calves are matched up with better kids for the upcoming show season. Andrea and I will enjoy watching the product of the hard work and dedication they put in when we go to the shows.

Speaking of fall sales - there are numerous ways to market your cattle. Not every operation works the same, so it is foolish to think that everyone needs to market the same way. At the ACA we offer a number of ways to help match potential buyers with sellers. The American Chianina Journal is a good way to spread the word about your sale. We also offer email blast, Facebook, text blast and website advertising on chicattle.org.

The ACA also have another unique way to help you expand your audience. The ACA in the second year of a partnership with Show Circuit Online Sales. This partnership allows you access to advertise in both the ACJ and the Show Circuit magazine, and two free email blasts. The savings alone with two free ads and two e-blasts is worth your while. To take advantage of this opportunity, simply call me to book your sale. Everything else works the same. We have been involved in numerous sales thus far and I think everyone agrees that they get more bang for their buck.

As producers are making their fall purchases, it is somewhat disenchanting that some cattlemen refuse to believe in the power of EPD’s. EPD’s are a tool just like any other device in your tool boxes at home. They work for the job at hand. I sometimes make the mistake of picking up a hammer when I should have used the proper tool. Unfortunately, like many others, I probably pay dearly when it comes time to fix what I broke when I didn’t use the proper tool. EPD’s are a tool and service we provide to breeders at the ACA. You need to match the tools with what you are trying to accomplish. EPD’s do not need to be highest or the lowest priority, but referencing them can prove beneficial. The milk EPD is a great example - some areas have abundant feed sources and can afford to have cows that milk harder. Other regions have less than ample feed sources and simply cannot have cows that try to milk past their capacity, resulting in cows that are too thin to breed back. Therefore, a cow in the middle of corn belt can afford to milk harder than a cow in deserts of Arizona. These tools work, and have been proven time and time again. When utilized properly, they can be used to build a house but used wrong they can ruin any project.

To further improve the “house” and increase EPD’s effectiveness, the ACA needs breeders to turn in good phenotypic data in good contemporary groups. These groups should be as large as a breeder can make them with cattle in identical conditions. The more data we can analyze, the better the predictability of our EPD’s. In order to increase Chianina presence in the commercial side of the industry we need to have predictive power. It simply is not enough to tell commercial producers that the calves will perform, we need the data to prove to them that Chianina cattle will work, and we need your assistance to produce that data.

I believe that Chianina cattle have a place in the beef industry not just in a show ring. We need to continue to promote Chianina genetics outside of our own breeders. If we want to grow the breed and bring new breeders in we need to support each other and show outsiders what Chianina cattle can do.

area. Each year at Louisville the Ladies Auxiliary selects an outstanding Lady who has been active in the Chi breed, works with youth and is active in her community.

We know that not everyone travels to the National Show in Louisville in

November, so we would like to have nominations for ladies that work hard in their communities, that you feel deserve this award of Chi Lady of the Year.

All you have to do is submit a letter telling why this Lady should deserve this

award. Tell about her and her accomplishments.

The winner will be selected at the Ladies Luncheon during Louisville.

Again, the Lady does not have to be present at Louisville to win this award.

Hello Chi Enthusiasts, Our National Chi/Chiangus shows in Louisville are fast approaching and I hope everyone is planning on exhibiting and participating in the show, sale, or just interacting and catching up with your fellow ACA members. It is always an exciting atmosphere combining the great Chi influenced cattle and great people of our association. You are the most important factor in the success of the breed and association. The past few years the schedule at the NAILE has not been favorable for the ACA and has hurt participation and numbers, thus your show of support at this years events are urgent and significate. Board President Val Shields and CEO Andee Marston were very vigorous and persuasive in getting a most favorable schedule change for the ACA events.

The NAILE management has granted our plea for this change and for this we are very grateful. We, the members, must show them with increased participation that decision was justified.

This past summer’s NJHS in KS was a great success and next year in Grand Island should be awesome. I hope all Junior members are planning on going as it is a great family experience. We are very fortunate we have great leadership in our Junior program with Andrea and Andee. I would like to pass along a comment from a family that showed at one of the “big” breed Jr Heifer Shows this past summer. They said there were over twenty head per class and they only kept and commented on the top ten head so their child made one lap around the ring and out due to time constraints. It took longer to get to the show ring than to show the calf and just felt discard afterwards. I invited them to try our NJHS next summer and I assured them they would feel and have a much more rewarding family experience.

Lastly, the ACA Board of Directors has tried to be receptive to ideas and suggestions to help strengthen the ACA. Not every idea is feasible or functional to act on, but they are discussed and commented on. The cattle registrations are holding steady but please register your cattle. It helps the bottom line and it does add value to “your” herd.

It’s just about that time for the leaves to start falling and for trailers to start heading toward Louisville. For many of us the North American Livestock Exposition is more than just any other cow show. It’s a time to catch up with old friends and even make new ones. Louisville, Kentucky is home to the National Chianina Junior and Open Show. Along with the shows, the American Junior Chianina Association will be hosting their annual National Online Sale. This year the sale will consist of embryos of elite genetics, top Chianina influenced sires, and even a few live lots of Chianina Heifers that are eligible to show across the country. BOARD CANDIDATES

ACA Board Nominees Each year the active adult membership of the American Chianina Association will elect four directors based on the updated region alignment. The ACA regions are as follows: • Northwest (states of Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, and Wyoming.)

• Southwest (states of Arizona, California, Kansas, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah) • Northeast (states of Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin)

• Southeast (states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi. Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia) This year we have two open At-large positions, one regional position for the southeast area and one in the northwest area. No more than four board of directors shall serve from the same region. There are only four candidates, so they will automatically be elected to serve on the Board of Directors.

MARK TRACY

I am excited to be considered for the ACA Board of Directors and am looking forward to getting to know more Chianina breeders in the process. But first, a little about me…

Growing up in Alliance, Nebraska, my father, Dr. Mark Tracy, DVM, was a veterinarian in one of America’s largest cow/calf practices, which afforded me an early education of this industry I have spent my life in. My brothers and I were active in junior cattle programs, showing steers at every level, which offered my first experience with Chianina cattle.

Upon graduating from Kansas State University, I had the opportunity to work for many successful cattle operations. I’ve experienced programs spanning 6 breeds in every aspect of cattle production, from cow/ calf to packing house, and I have seen first-hand the benefits of using Chianina influenced genetics. I’m convinced, there is no other breed that combines maternal and carcass traits with as much flexibility to meet the needs of any program, better than Chianina. This experience, in-part, is what led me and my wife, Kaylee, to focus on Chianina genetics in our own program, located in Southwest Nebraska.

I believe an expansion of commercial marketplaces, coupled with strong promotion of Chianina genetic benefits, as well as support for a strong junior program, can work in tandem to advance the goal of expanding membership. And, I hope to be a sounding board for our members to share ideas and concerns to achieve breed objectives and add benefits for our breeders.

RYAN DUNKLAU

Ryan Dunklau is from Wayne, Ne and own and operates Dunk Cattle Co with his wife Crystal and three children Hadley, Wyatt, and Blayne. While also farming, he runs a cow/calf operation with a large Chianina influence and strives to provide customers with cattle that perform both in the show ring and in the pasture.

Prior to Dunk Cattle Co, Ryan attended college at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and had a large farming/feedlot background that nurtured a love for raising functional cattle that suit his everyday life and production goals while still performing in the show ring.

Ryan is excited to bring a young, ambitious and open-minded perspective to the Chianina board. Additionally, he looks forward to helping Chianina cattle stay in the forefront of the show ring while continuing to improve the value of Chianina cattle in the commercial market.

Aside from a young, fresh perspective, he believes young people are the future of the Chianina breed, and the key to continued success. Therefore, as an association we need to continue to prioritize our young people, and support their involvement in the Chianina Association and the cattle industry as a whole. He is excited to become a member of the board, and help improve the association that his children will continue to be a part of.

ANDY HIGGINS

Andy Higgins is a native of Watertown, Tennessee where he and his family have been involved with Chiangus cattle for his entire life. Their herd consists of approximately 75 cows. His family markets their cattle through two online sales yearly, along with private treaty sales on the farm. He received his Bachelor of Science in 2009 at Middle Tennnessee Stte University with a degree in Agribusiness. He currently works as a realtro and auctioneers in the Middle Tennessee area with Parks Auction Company.

He also has a photography business for purebred cattle sale across the Southeast.

During his years as a junior member, Andy served on the AJCA Board of Directors where he held several offices including the Chairman. “It has always been a goal of mine to represent the membership on the ACA Board of Directors. I’m optimistic about Chianina genetics and the future of the ACA, and look forward to doing my part to make our breed the best it can be.”

RANDY GADDIS

Randy Gaddis got his start in the cattle business with Chiangus in 1986, and has been raising them ever since. His operation begain in Fredericktown, OH, and focused on animals that would perform both in the pasture and on the rail while still possessing some show ring appeal. He implemented ultrasounding and carcus data from the beginning to select for fat thickness and ribeye area, with the hopes that these highly heritable traits would be passed on to future generations.

Gaddis relocated from Ohio to Albany, Missouri in 1998, but still focuses on the qualities that his herd was founded upon. In addition to their Chiangus herd, they have expanded to include some Chianina composites along with Simangus and Angus cattle. Gaddis believes that “being on the board is important to move the breed forward, because Chianina Cattle have so many positive traits to offer the cattle industry.”

WEANING & PRECONDITIONING CALVES As the days seem to be getting shorter, nights are cooler and fall is approaching our thoughts of a cow/calf producer change.

Weaning spring born calves is just around the corner and we need to start preparing and planning our operation for this big event.

Some of us might even need to explore about the benefits of early weaning this year. Still weaning, without a doubt, is one of the most stressful events in the life of a calf. Anytime we, as producers, can remove stress from weaning, it can be very beneficial to the cow/calf operator and beyond. Most overlook that fact that weaning is also our opportunity as cattle producers to prepare calves for the next phase of the beef production cycle. “We are trying to make a productive member of our feedlot society or a reproductive heifer coming back into our herd,” says Dr. AJ Tarpoff, Beef Extension veterinarian at Kansas State University. Everyone’s goal of weaning should be a have calves that can make it without their mothers, consume feed and successfully acclimate to a new environment. To do this calves need go thru the separation process, learn a new environment, get acclimated to new feedstuffs and stay healthy all at the same time. Improving on these steps can add value to your animals.

Important steps to follow.

• Establish a herd health program. “The solution for starting cattle does not start with a syringe and a needle” says Dr. PAGE 18 | CHIANINA JOURNAL | OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

Mark Handlin of Heartland Veterinary Clinic. When bringing in cattle, cattle source and handling, feed, water and environment (both weather and pen condition) have a greater effect. I cannot stress this enough, producers should consult with their local veterinarians and develop a herd health plan the meets a sound vaccination program as well as a treatment plan for calves if they do become sick. Planning ahead of time can save lots of money when ordering supplies and cuts back on wasted time running for this or that.

• Don’t add stress during weaning. Castration, dehorning, and branding can all add stress. Plan to complete these tasks well in advance of weaning, (minimum of 3 weeks) or a month after.

• Prepare weaning pen with proper placement of feed bunks and a good water source. Clean pens to try to minimize dust and allow pens to drain during wet weather. Providing access to the weaning pens prior to weaning helps the calves adapt to their new environment. Provide fence line contact, if you can, to soften and reduce behavioral stress and minimize post-weaning weight loss of the weaned calf.

• Help calves adjust to the new feedstuffs. At the K-State Research Center in Hays, a feeding protocol for weaning calves has been developed that works well for transitioning weaned calves to a total mixed ration. It starts with high-quality grass hay and the weaning ration being offered each at 0.5% of the calves’ current bodyweight, dry basis, on the day of weaning.

The weaning ration should be placed on the bottom of the bunk and the hay over the top. Each day the weaning ration is increased while hay remains the same. On day 4, place the hay on the bottom of the bunk. Over a period of 7-10 days, the dry intake should be reached at approximately 2.2-2.5% of the calves’ bodyweight.

Simply by pre-conditioning, producers are trying to maximize health and well-being of the animals prior to and at weaning, not just post-weaning. Remember, no two groups of cattle are the same and using a one herd health plan that fits all phases of your operation might not work in all situations. Establish a health/

vaccination plan that fits your operation by consulting with your veterinarian. Try to reduce stress of weaning as much of possible, along with preparing your weaning pen ahead of time. Getting your weaning calves up to the bunk and eating should be a top priority. This all plays an important part of the successfulness of weaning and keeping your calves headed in the right direction.
