Making a Statement Andee Marston, Chief Executive Officer The NJHS exhibitors came prepared and it showed in every class, division and the champion line up. If the breed is going to make a statement I think that is the place to start. If you want to win you need a Chianina influenced heifer. More Chianina influenced cattle have won the Supreme Champion at Black Hills Stock Show than all the other breeds combined. More times than not the Champion steer at NAILE has had some Chianina influence. I do not think it is a coincidence these cattle consistently win. There is something about them - the way they look, feed and continue into the next generation. We truly have every option at our disposal to continue breeding Chianina influence cattle well into the future. Chianina cattle complement every breed and any breeding program. I would like to thank our own Andrea Paulson, and our intern Jaid Runft, what a successful NJHS. I received many comments about how smooth this year’s show went. The AJCA board of directors really put forth a great effort to make our show one of a kind. I would like to thank Colton Geiger, Curtis Harsh, and Halley Becking for their service to the AJCA. I would like to welcome back Taylor Ray, Shelby Manning, and Carson Goff. Also, joining the team this year is Ashlynn Beninga, Trace Hesler, Dylan Mente, and Kylie Pickard. We are going to have a great crew for the upcoming year. Tyler Pinkerton will be at the helm to help steer the AJCA in the right direction. Of course, the NJHS is more than just winning the show. It is an event where we meet up with old friends and find new ones. Our kids learn and build their skills in many of the contests we offer
at the NJHS. It is more than just a show, it is an event, a family vacation, and a business building forum. Andrea and the ACA along with the AMAA support the event to be able to bring you a Junior National show that will rival any other breed’s junior nationals. Heck, last year we were voted Best in the Barn “Most Fun Junior Nationals.” I would like to think we would be in the running again. Successful events like these don’t happen by accident. It is with the support of all the breeders, exhibitors and enthusiasts that make it possible. I would like to thank all the people that donate, not just monetarily, but also their time and talents to helping us pull off one of the greatest junior shows on the planet. The ACA is excited to offer a new program. Chianina Fat Steer Rewards Program is designed as to further reward junior members success with their Chianina influence steers. It is a pretty simple program, and will provide monetary rewards to successfully exhibited animals. Look for more information in this issue as to how it can help you or your customers. We look forward to seeing pictures of the winning steers in the future. If you have any questions about the program please do not hesitate to call or email. The Chianina beef project is also starting to take shape. Our first orders for Chianina beef are coming in and we will begin to ship beef to the Chicago area. This exciting program is starting small but we hope that with a diligent investment we can add value to Chianina genetics. The program, while still relatively minute, is a significant step in opening more doors in the future.

Everyone at the ACA is extremely excited about the opportunity to feature Chianina beef in several restaurants in the Chicago area. By the next issue, we will be able to tell you which restaurants will feature Chianina beef. While we are looking forward, every year the ACA membership elects four representatives to the ACA Board of Directors. In this issue, you will find the nomination application. If you would like to be considered for the board please fill out and complete the application. This year we have two open at-large seats as well as the Southeast and Northwest regions. I would like to encourage anyone interested to talk to current board members or myself. It is crazy to believe that summer is just about over and school will be starting soon for many of our Junior members. As state fairs are kicking off, look for Andrea or myself to be in attendance. We are also looking forward to working with you on your sale whether it is private treaty, online, or a live auction. The ACA and Show Circuit Online are still partners and would like to offer you a better way to host your online sale. Our benefits include more advertising with the ACJ and Show Circuit magazine. Procedure for Electing Members to the ACA Board of Directors Each year the active adult membership of the ACA will elect four directors based on the updated region alignment. The ACA regions are as follows: Northwest (states of Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, and Wyoming.) Southwest (states of Arizona, California, Kansas, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah) Northeast (states of Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin) Southeast (states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi. Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia) The nomination and election procedure is outlined below: 1.) A nominating petition, which appears in the August ACJ, must be completed and returned to the Association office by September 11, 2017. 2.) Ballots with the names of the nominees will be mailed to the ACA membership on October 1, 2017.
3.) The ballots must be returned to auditing agency. All ballots must be postmarked ON or BEFORE October 20, 2017. 4.) The candidate receiving the most votes from each region, or for the At-Large positions, will be declared the winner. 5.) Each active ACA member may cast one vote for each At-Large director position open each year and one vote for the regional director of his or her particular region when being elected. Boards of Director positions up for election this year, 2017, are the Northwest, Southwest regions and two At-Large positions. All directors will be elected for a three-year term. No more than four (4) persons from the same region shall serve on the Board of Directors at any one time. If you live in the Northwest or Southeast region and wish to nominate an active member within that region, please complete the form below. Because of term limits Jordan Holt, Bryan Schaeffer, and Val Shields are ineligible for re-election. Because of regional limits no one from the Northeast region is elligible for election.

There’s no place like Hutch was another successful junior nationals. Congratulations to all the winners…the Chianina Breed was represented well. I hope everyone had a safe trip home from Hutchinson. Juniors, please remember to thank everyone who helped you get to Louisville. It is great friends and family who make it all possible. Congratulations to our new Queen, Laurel Culp from Kentucky and Princess Cameron Choate from Texas. I am sure they will both represent our breed very well. Now that Junior Nationals are over, local county fairs and state fairs begin. Before we know it, Louisville will be here. I hope all of the Ladies are planning on attending the “Come As You Are” luncheon on Monday, November 13, 2017, at 11:30 am. This will be our annual meeting and membership drive, along with elections. We need new and fresh ideas, so if you know of anyone, please invite them to our luncheon. You won’t want to miss out on the OH SO FAMOUS “Kentucky Silk Pie” We won’t be long, so please plan to attend for a fun time had by all!!!. Also, in this issue are the guidelines for Chi Lady of the Year. We wanted to give more women the opportunity to be nominated even if they cannot make it to Louisville. The Chi Lady of the Year is a lady who has been active in Chi Cattle, works with the youth and is involved in her community. Each year at Louisville the Ladies Auxiliary selects an outstanding Lady who has been active in the Chi breed, works with youth and is active in her community. We know that not everyone travels to the National Show in Louisville in November, so we would like to have nominations for ladies that work hard in their communities, that you feel deserve this award of Chi Lady of the Year. From Rinsing Calves to Catching the Bus! by Carson Goff
Its that time of year again, county fairs are coming to a close, state fairs are in full swing and junior nationals seems like an eternity ago. All too soon kids will be waking up to catch the bus - not rinse calves - and school will be in full swing. As my last year as a junior comes to a close I have had time to reflect on my last 12 years exhibiting livestock. A majority of my best memories have been made through the Chianina events. Whether it was driving golf carts with no headlights in the dark in Lima, or taking part in the massive water fight this year in Hutchison.

This year in Hutch we had another outstanding junior national. I had the chance to catch up with friends from across the country as well as meet new people as well. The family’s involved with the Chianina breed create such a welcoming atmosphere for not only socializing but also competitiveness. This year we welcomed a new youth director to the team, and in eight short months she has made some major improvements not only with the junior board of directors but also with the planning of events with junior nationals as well as the execution of those plans. As your newly-elected vice president I hope to take on a greater role to help improve each and every junior member experience, just as I was mentored when I was new to junior nationals, and cannot wait to further the development of the AJCA.

Watch – Learn – Success! Brittany Conkey came to the 2017 National Junior Heifer Show in Hutchinson, Kansas knowing it was her last show as a junior exhibitor, but what she didn’t know was that all her years of hard work were about to pay off. Surrounded by Ohio’s strong presence of Chianina breeders, Conkey began her journey to the National Junior Heifer Show. While in Hutchinson, Conkey was selected as the Champion Senior Showman, Chianina Herdsman of the Year and Premiere Exhibitor. Growing up, Conkey was raised on a family farm in Huntsville, Ohio. At age
11 she found herself on the end of a halter and in 2006 Conkey convinced her dad to allow her to show a steer at the county fair. She took it upon herself to call local breeder, Zane Zeedyk, a phone call that sparked the rest of her show career. Conkey was able to buy her first show heifer and the foundation piece of her operation from Zeedyk’s. In 2010 she made a push to not only expand her herd, but to continue to improve the genetics each year. Conkey credits Zeedyk for teaching her the basics of being a well-rounded breeder and introducing her to larger shows. When asked why Chianina, Conkey states “the Chi breed has always worked awesome for me as a breeder and in terms of what I like economically.” Other building blocks of her herd come from the Ott family in Indiana from whom Conkey purchased two more show heifers. The first one being more modern and easily worked with her and the Ott family. Conkey expresses her memory of the second heifer as a female that “from start to finish, as a calf to a big bred this heifer was tremendous. I am excited to see third/ fourth generations on the ground, tracking 4 generations of this donor is truly special.”

One major milestone in her show career is the 2007 Chianina Junior Nationals in Bowling Green, KY. “I learned so much there but it’s amazing to see how far I’ve came in a short amount of time” says Conkey. Each year her junior national success peaked more as did her involvement within the association. Kansas City in 2011 Conkey’s heifer was on the higher end of the class and she participated in the stockman’s contest, this same year she was named herdsman at the Ohio State Fair. In Conkey’s home state at Lima in 2012 she remembers the event being significantly more work. “It was the best quality that was brought to junior nationals and I was able to represent my county along with [encouraging] other juniors from my area” recalls Conkey. In Grand Island, 2013, she exhibited her first bred and owned division winner. Being a dual pre-vet animal science and
biology major it wasn’t flexible enough for Conkey to attend junior nationals for a few years, but nothing was going to prevent her from hitching it to Hutchinson for her final go-round. If there’s one element Conkey has thoroughly grabbed over the years, it is to learn by watching. Her ability to observe other members has been the main component in her development not only as a breeder but as an individual. “The people aspect of the Chi breed is special. Breeders thrive off each other and grow together,” says Conkey. When asked about some influences and motivations in her journey with the Chianina association she talks of how she has always been able to grow with the Ott family. She is happy she can now grow through helping with their children. From the beginning, she has always been able to look up to Zane Zeedyk. “From a breeder’s stand point, he is always on top of things, knows his cattle, being able to manage them and all in all a sound breeder”, states Conkey. Another familiar
face to the association mentioned by Conkey is Brad Winegardner and his family. Conkey remembers watching Tyler and Hannah show when she was younger and still looks up to the Winegardner family whether it comes to fitting or showmanship. “I purchased embryos from Winegardner’s, and getting to know them better has been instrumental [in] serving as a role model.” Not only that, but Conkey states that “what they do together as a family is something I admire”. The Conkey’s are very family oriented – which contributes to her father as a main influence in her life. His passion for the agriculture industry is second to none, which fostered Conkey’s understanding of the industry at a very young age. “His tough love pushed me to work hard and do my best, he is a huge role model and he is able to operate the farm and still be willing to help me with my livestock is incredible”. “It’s really working hard day in and day out, late nights early mornings”
that lead to Conkey being selected as Champion Senior Showman. Conkey prefers working with her show string initially when they are calves and getting them used to her early on. “I watch other showman that have been successful to see what works and what doesn’t”, declared Conkey. A unique and critical aspect to Conkey’s daily routine is the reward system. She utilizes the show stick as a reward to her animals by practicing setting up without the stick and when they’ve done well enough she rewards them with the scratches of the show stick. The champion showman stresses the importance of identifying with your animal, being able to find their strengths and weakness out on the move or on the stand still. Conkey says “I believe that no matter how your steer or heifer is acting, that animal will feed off the exhibitor - you stay calm, they stay calm.” Conkey has an impressive track record for being an agriculture advocate on

local, state, and national levels. Aside from the AJCA, she was active in 4-H, FFA, and basketball. Conkey was named state FFA beef entrepreneur and top 10 in the nation for accounting. Conkey attended the University of Finley in Finley, OH dual majoring in pre-vet animal science and biology. While there, she was a member of the beef cattle show team and helped show her teammates what showing was really about. Through the show team, she was able to share her passion through clinics of fitting and showmanship. Conkey graduated last spring and will continue her education at Ohio State University in the fall. She will be attending vet school focusing on large animal medicine. She stays active with the local 4-H around the area. Conkey also enjoys scrapbooking, helping her dad out, camping, and bringing out her creative side with photography. Even if you are a herdsman, champion showman, or premier exhibitor Conkey reminds juniors that “your ability to grow with work ethic is vital in any aspect of life.”

Favorite NJHS Contest: Public Speaking, I love to talk to and share my ideas with others and this contest gives me the opportunity to grow these skills. Advice to juniors: Don’t let a fear of not being good enough hold you back from trying any and everything.
Favorite NJHS memory: My favorite moment happened this year. Ever since we were little, my sister and I wanted to have a national champion. This year was her last year showing and she finally did it. She won Fourth Overall ChiAngus in the Futurity and the NJHS. Why do you raise Chi cattle: Why not? Chi is such a great breed with great potential. The Chi calves I raise are big bodied with great structure. The Chi breed brings market and breeding together in a great package.
Most embarrasing moment: Rapping the entirety of Fergalicious in the State Fair open class beef barn over the microphone.
Pet Peeve: Hands down, people chewing with their mouth open

Why do you raise Chi cattle: Because it is a growing breed and you are able to cross them with the new bulls coming out that are more moderate. Advice to a new junior starting in the Chi breed: As long as you like your animal at the end of the day it does not matter what the judge thinks. A show is based off of one man’s opinion. Favorite Color: Lime Green Least Favorite Show Day Task: Waking up early to wash cattle in a packed wash rack. Favorite activity outside the show ring: Being able to drive Corvettes and other sports cars at work. One weird fact about you: Before I won my new belt buckle this year I would wear my pig buckle I won on the Hampshire Circuit at cattle shows.

Don’t blink – A common saying that could not be more applicable to the past two years. My time spent on the junior board has come and gone faster than I ever would have expected it. Perhaps this is because four years ago I attended my first junior nationals without ever imagining I would be serving as an officer on the AJCA Board Directors. Going outside of our comfort zones is never a thought that seems too intriguing when the idea first enters our head. Often, when we push ourselves past this zone, we end up looking back wondering what our experience would have been if we never went past our comfort. This is true of my experience when I made a last-minute decision to run for the AJCA Board of Directors during Jr. Nationals in Springfield, IL. Being raised on a quarter horse farm in Indiana didn’t make me the typical outfit for a junior board candidate. Regardless, when opportunity arose, I couldn’t find a reason why I shouldn’t run for the AJCA. Why would someone not want to travel to national shows while making decisions and building friendships with other youth that showed chi cattle? Looking back, I am so fortunate to have served in a youth leadership position within an industry where people are welcoming and supportive. While my role may change as I now enter a different stage in life, my passion for the people and cattle remains the same. I cannot say thank you enough to the donors and volunteers that make everything possible. I would also regret if I did not mention that I am grateful to have worked along with a junior advisor and

With all the Junior Nationals finally wrapped up this summer and having a chance to get caught up and reflect on a few things. Andrea asked us all to write a little retirement from the junior board as long or short as we’d like and I think I’ll stick to the short option. Thank you is always a word you hear, but is often hard to truly show or express, but as I look back on 4 years of the Junior Chianina board I want to say a few thank you’s to the breeders of the association who are always willing to give a donation or offer up advice for improvements. Thank you to the senior board for helping guide the junior board on issues and new ideas to continually improve the association. Thank you to Andee Marston for the hard work he has put into the association the past three years and helping get us on the fast track to success. Thanks to Andrea Paulson for coming in and helping put on a great junior nationals and bringing new excitement to the junior board. Thank you to my fellow board members over the years we have made quite the memories and lasting friendships.

Back in 2013 I was elected onto the the American Junior Chianina Association board of directors. At the time I was a really shy 17-year-old and had no idea exactly what I was getting myself into. I knew I was going to be a part of planning my favorite week of the year and the prospect of that was really exciting. What I didn’t know was that I was going to be put in a situation where not only would I have the opportunity to work with some phenomenal people to plan the national junior heifer show, but those people would also become a large part of my life.
Looking back over the last four years has made me realize the people I met doing my junior board duties have become a second family that I look forward to seeing at every national show. As I hang up my junior board jacket for the last time I can honestly say that being on the board for two terms although not always easy was one of the best decisions I made. Working so closely with everyone at the Chianina office over the last few years has been great and I have enjoyed helping them serve Lastly, thank you to my family.
