EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Greetings ABHA Members and Friends, I hope this message finds you all well. This sale season has been exciting to say the least. The demand and interest for Black Hereford genetics continues to increase and we have had sale toppers in multi-breed sales this fall as well. The American Royal had a tremendous set of Black Hereford cattle exhibited, which demanded a lot of interest from onlookers attending the event. I think you will see the resulting interest in our genetics moving forward due to the quality of cattle our members are producing. Some thoughts on how to capitalize on this continued popularity. Quality versus quantity is one of the greatest challenges any cattle producer faces, but I think it is the best place to start. Fortunately, the live market prices are strong, and it can let you, as a seedstock provider, be selective in what you are keeping and also marketing to your customers. It is a good time to look at your program and your sorting criteria when making these selections. Old, or unproductive Ernie Dominguez cows might be the first place to start with who stays around. Then, getting very Executive Vice President picky on the genetics that you retain in your herd, whether it be replacement females or bulls. The bull calves that you leave intact need to be something that ernie@blackhereford.org will move either you or the customer’s program forward. “Keeping the knife (512) 567 - 7840 sharp” is something that I have heard numerous times from some of the very best bull suppliers in the country. These suppliers have been able to sustain Reg, Membership, DNA & a demand despite the ebbs and flows of the cattle market, regardless if sales Supplies were being driven by cattle prices, breed popularity or drought. We as a breed Jennifer or Stephanie need to keep an eye on what we are producing and not let fad chasing impact the versatility of the cattle that Black Hereford breeders have worked so hard to (816) 431 - 6960 produce. It’s hard to believe that a year ago we completed our move to International Genetic Solutions (IGS) as our EPD service provider. IGS is a multi-breed genetic evaluation in which 20 progressive breed association partners collaborate to enhance commercial profitability. The collaboration has yielded the world’s largest genetic evaluation of beef cattle with more than 20 million animals and greater than 350,000 genotypes. IGS is leveraging the data across all breed association partners and using that information to increase the accuracy of prediction of our EPDs. The move to IGS also puts the ABHA on a weekly evaluation for our EPDs and a regular update cycle for any externals meeting minimum threshold criteria on accuracy. Your American Black Hereford Association closed out another great year in the calendar year 2023. The ABHA is growing in every metric such as membership, registrations, transfers, and DNA. The success of this association is due to the hard work and dedication by our members to improving genetics and making the necessary changes that the beef industry has demanded. Our membership is working hard to keep Black Hereford cattle at the forefront of the industry and is willing to make difficult decisions in order to continue growth and success. We must continue to make advancements in our genetics to improve our position in the industry, and I know we are up to the challenge. I want to thank our Board of Directors, our committees, and the entire membership for helping make 2023 a tremendous year for our association. We have much to celebrate in 2024, as this marks the 30th anniversary for our breed! We look forward to celebrating this milestone for our association and will be sharing more details on how we hope to commemorate this special occassion in the coming weeks and months. Please reach out if you have any questions or ideas for how we can continue to make a positive impact for the breed and this industry. We are all in this together, we will continue to work together to keep the ABHA strong, and American Black Hereford proud. We truly have some of the most dedicated, selfless people in the cattle business that support Black Hereford and its members. Let’s continue to show the industry what the American Black Hereford has to offer. Thank you for a great year at the ABHA. We wish you all a happy and blessed Christmas and New Year! 6 The American Black Hereford | Winter 2024

MEMBERSHIP FEES
The American Black Hereford Association (ABHA) Board of Directors has approved a modest increase on membership dues that will become effective January 1, 2024. Discussion over the last few months regarding continued increases in inflation (average increases with inflation rates averaging nearly 6-8%), our service contract arrangements and the cost of doing business the previous three years contributed to the difficult decision to raise membership dues. The ABHA has managed to keep registration fees the same for several years. Rather than increasing registration fees, the motion was made to increase the annual adult membership dues to $125, junior membership dues to $30 and Lifetime rates to $1,500. By increasing these fees, the ABHA will be able to continue offering the same quality service the membership is used to receiving while also mitigating the rising operating costs the ABHA has faced. Now is the perfect time to renew your membership at the 2023 rates before the increase takes effect January 1st. If you would like to renew your membership prior to January 1st, please contact Jennifer at 816-431-6960 or service@blackhereford.org.

Why Should Commercial Cattlemen be Interested in Genomics? Commercial Cattle & Genomics Dr. Troy Rowan
Reducing Risk in Bull Buying
Rowan said that the most essential function of genomics in the commercial herd is, “Making sure that we make the right selection decision more often than not.” He emphasized, “The bull purchase is one of the riskiest decisions a commercial herd makes.” Without selection tools such as EPDs (expected progeny differences), it is difficult to know what genetic potential producers are investing in. “This can cause major issues multiple generations into the future when we choose the wrong animal.” Rowan emphasized that “Regardless of Dr. Troy Rowan genomic-enhanced EPDs whether genomics serve two primary purposes. progeny information. This increase increase or decrease “First, they help us avoid in confidence in EPDs means that an EPD, the GE-EPD trainwrecks, and second, they commercial producers can be more is always better than help us make the correct confident that the bull they purchase is an unenhanced EPD what its EPDs say. selection decision more often. because it is closer to He added, “Regardless of EPDs have done this for the animal’s true whether genomics increase or or decades, and genomicdecrease, the GE-EPD is always better genetic merit.” enhanced EPDs are just more than an unenhanced EPD because it is accurate versions, particularly closer to the animal’s true genetic merit. for the young, unproven bulls that commercial producers purchase.” he explained. “Genomics help us to improve EPD accuracies because they are bette able to resolve the actual genomic relationships between animals. Traditionally, these accuracy increases would have had to come from progeny entering a genetic evaluation. Rowan emphasized that commercial producers do not have the benefit of purchasing bulls with multiple years of 8 The American Black Hereford | Winter 2024

Genomics for the Commercial Herd
Beyond the bull purchase, Rowan discussed several ways that genomics is used in commercial herds. “Just like they help improve the accuracy of a bull selection, genomics can help us select heifers in commercial herds,” Rowan said. He added that commercial genomic tests do not generate the same accuracy as GE-EPD in an actual genetic evaluation. Rowan broke commercail genomic tests into three classes: 1) Genetic evaluations with commercial options, 2) Breed-specific genomic tests, and 3) Multi-breed genomic tests. “It is essential that training population for commercial tests are representative of the population being tested,” Rowan said. “When the training population is not representative of the tested animals, accuracies can be very low.”
“Another exciting application of commercial genomics is in marketing feeder cattle,” Rowan said. We can use genomic tests to help select our heifers and leverage that information to market our feeder calves.” Rowan pointed to multiple added-value programs that compensate producers for genetic selection decisions with the end product in mind. “Feeders and packers will pay for information about an animal’s genetic potential,” Rowan said. “Genomic tests allow them to make more informed buying decisions, and genomic-verified programs can help commercial operations capture additional value for the end-product potential of their calf crop.” Rowan’s presentation underlined the role that genomics plays in all aspects of the commercial beef herd. Genomics are essential tools for reducing risk when purchasing bulls, and new technologies show promise for informing replacement heifer selection decisions and helping to market feeder calves. To watch Rowan’s full presentation, visit https://youtu.be/dJdhlhX3pYM. For more information about this year’s Symposium and the Beef Improvement Federation, including additional presentations and award winners, visit BIFSymposium.com
Rowan pointed to multiple research sources showing that genomic tests are predicative in commercial populations. Still, he emphasized that they do not predict phenotypes of replacement animals, and the returns of investment remain unclear.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello all, it is that time of year again! The winter season is here as well as cooler weather. However, it has been unseasonably warm so far in many parts of the country. I hear people say, “I hope we don’t pay for this later in the winter.” I always tell them to enjoy the nice weather now while we have it and look at it as a positive. I can’t remember a winter that we didn’t make it through! Some of course were better than others, but we all made it. That is why we are farmers and ranchers; we can adapt to the change.
Rod Garman
I want to say a big thank you to everyone that came to Kansas City to the annual meeting and show. We had a great meeting, and it is always good to see everyone there. In our meeting we had some great speakers that I want to thank and hopefully they taught us some new things and the importance of our data.
This fall, you as the membership, elected 2 new board members. Mike Hamilton and Todd Hampton. I want to personally welcome them both to the ABHA board and we look to working with each of you continuing to move our breed forward. It is good to ABHA OFFICERS forward have new people as well as people that live in different parts of the county to sit on the board because what works for one region doesn’t always in other places. So having board Vice President members all across the US is good and exciting for the association as a whole. I want to Matt Marsh take a moment and thank Darrell Selby for the time he put into the association. He was (912) 425 - 0365 not seeking re-election but was a big help in getting things done. I also want to say a big thank you to Brock Johansen for all the time he has spent on the board and the many Treasurer hours he has taken of his time to help with so many aspects of this association. Our annual national sale went great this year. We had some very good cattle that came through the ring that were profitable. I appreciate all the buyers and consignors that made it such a success. There were several good animals that got a new home. Some really good animals to build a foundation on. I want to thank Bobby Singleton for helping manage the sale as I believe he was a big part of our success.
We are heading to Oklahoma City for Cattlemen’s Congress for one of our biggest shows. Cattlemen’s Congress was birthed during Covid because Denver cancelled their show. So now Congress has become one of the biggest and most looked forward to shows in the nation. There is a significant investment being made to build new facilities as well. This year we were able, with the help of Bobby Singleton, to put on the Congressional Elite Black Hereford Sale hosted on Sale Day. This is something the first year we were there Ernie and I started working on to help our members sell their best animals at top dollar. I have already seen several of the offerings in the sale and it will be the best online sale to date by far! So don’t miss it. The sale will begin closing January 1st at 7pm CST. If possible, please come out and join us. We will have snacks, drinks and have a good time of fellowship. 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the American Black Hereford! We are looking forward to celebrating this exciting milestone in the history of our breed and association. We will share more information on how we plan to commemorate our 30th anniversary in the weeks and months to come. For now, I pray that you all have a good Christmas and a Happy New Year! But more importantly, let’s not forget the real reason for the season - It is about the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! The one who left a perfect place and came to this imperfect world to be a sacrifice for you and me, so that we all could go to a perfect place called Heaven and call it our home. If and only if we will call upon his name. Merry Christmas and God Bless!

BREEDER SPOTLIGHT
The Origin of
Black Herefords
By Joe Hoagland, Founding Member of ABHA Before Black Herefords, there were only two breeds of Hereford cattle. The first registry founded in 1881 was the American Hereford Association (AHA.) A hornless mutation found in Iowa later created a separate breed of Hereford cattle. In 1910, the American Polled Hereford Association (APHA) was established. The first time I ever heard of a Black Hereford was at the 1986 annual meeting of the AHA held in the Muehlbach Hotel in Kansas City. A beef geneticist from the University of Missouri was asked to make a presentation on how Hereford cattle could be improved. He suggested turning the hair color black like several other breeds had done would be helpful. Black Baldies have been a popular crossbreed of Hereford and Angus cattle since the 1930’s. This was the first suggestion to line breed Hereford cattle for black hair color. As a genetic trait, black is dominant over red the same way polled is dominant over horned, so the breeding technique to create another Hereford breed was the same as the APHA had used.
12 The American Black Hereford | Winter 2024
In 1995, the AHA and APHA merged into one association. Prior to the merger, the AHA opposed creating a Black Hereford. The APHA favored breeding Black Herefords the way Simmental, Gelbvieh, Saler, Limousin and other red breeds had done to turn their cattle black to qualify for the new market premiums based on black hair color. When the idea was rejected in the merger talks, John Gage, the attorney for APHA, set up a corporation to establish a Black Hereford Registry in 1994.
https://blackhereford.org
...Breeder Spotlight continued from Page -By this time, Hall of Fame Hereford breeder, Frank Felton, John Gage, and ourselves had started breeding for a black Hereford. The first Registered Black Hereford was born on J & N Ranch in 1997. Frank became ill and John passed away. That same year, I purchased the corporation from John’s estate. Known as the American Black Hereford Association, it was soon designated as the third separate Hereford cattle breed by the World Animal Breeds organization, based in Rome. This entity gave the breed its designation worldwide of HB for labeling semen. Today they recognize three separate breeds: Horned Hereford (HH), Polled Hereford (HP) and Black Hereford (HB.) J & N Ranch had raised registered Hereford cattle since 1978 and registered Angus since 1992. Norma and I had combined our two-family estates into J & N Ranch LLC in the 1970’s. Some of the land had been in our families since 1866. Although we owned the American Black Hereford Association, it had never been activated. Finally in 2003, we sold the first Black Herefords in our annual ranch production sale and began selling memberships so others could raise registered Black Herefords.
https://blackhereford.org
The ranch is located on the banks of the Missouri River, just north of Kansas City. In addition to raising corn and soybeans on the river bottom, the estate features hunting and logging operations. However, cattle are the principal focus of the business. We are involved in all three segments of the industry: cow/calf, stocker, and feeder operations. Today we have 300 registered Black Hereford cows and hold two production sales a year, one in February and one in October.

ABHA PERFORMANCE BREEDERS
The ABHA maintains a list of Active Breeders and designates which breeders are Performance Breeders based on requirements listed in our association Rules & Regulations. Performance Registry This participation level is designed for breeders who are committed to performance testing their herds. Performance registry breeders are required to annually report birth weight and weaning weight information within the data guidelines (birth weight taken within 24 hours of birth and a weaning weight taken between 160 days and 250 days of age) on any animal with a completed transfer or registration on any HB or HX. Breeders that submit data on at least two thirds [2/3] of the animals prior to the current year will receive the Performance Breeder designation. Here is the list of Performance Breeders for the calendar year 2022. Congratulations to those members who met the requirements to receive the designation!

Landon Ellison
2023 - 2024 AJBHA OFFICERS
Junior Board Member
I hope that everyone has had a great year and a great time with the American Black Hereford Association as we continue to grow and prosper as a breed. I am excited to see everyone at Cattlemen’s Congress and see the competitiveness and growth of our breed, and the juniors that work with their cattle. I am glad to be a part of this great breed and association that grows every show.

I want to start by saying that this year is already one for the books! As the association grows, the quality of cattle continues to grow with it! Through competing in shows across the country, Landon Ellison Tennessee I have had the opportunity to learn and grow McKay Grohmann within this breed, by working with my fellow Illinois juniors at this past Junior National, or making my way through the barns and meeting new Sami Neff Wisconsin people at the American Royal. The community surrounding the breed is unlike any other, and it Emily Tabor is truly been a blessing to be a part of the breed. Kentucky I am excited about what the future might bring! ABHA DAMS OF SUPREMACY To earn a Dam of Supremacy title, the cow must have: 1. Weaned a calf born since Jan. 1, prior to the qualifying year. 2. Produced at least 3 calves. 3. Initially calveed at 30 months of age or less. 4. Had an interval between the first and second calves no greater
than 400 days. In addition, a 385-day calving interval must have been maintained after her second calf. The longer initial calving interval allows breeders to calve year-old heifers prior to the mature cow herd. 5. Had weaning records submitted to the ABHA for every calf produced that was born eight months before the date of the award determination of the qualifying year. 6. Had 3-year progeny average 205-day adjusted weaning weight ratio of at least 105%. 7. All weights must fall within BIF guidelines.
