EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Greetings ABHA Members and Friends,
I hope your spring is off to a good start! Spring calving and Black Hereford sales are in full swing now. The interest in Black Hereford sales over the last few months has been great. What we are seeing is the animal’s quality and presentation are at the top of the list for most buyers, and then we see pedigree, performance, and data come in to set the market value of that animal on sale day.
If you step back and look at the sales and evaluate the prices relative to bulls, a few things stand out. The first is that pedigree matters. We are in a time where people want predictability because the value of cattle continues to increase. If money is to be spent and profits are to be made, the bull buyer wants assurance that return on investment can and will happen.
The second is that visual performance is crucial to getting people to take a second look. What that means is a really good picture for a sale catalog and weight/pounds matter. When you walk into a pen of cattle, very seldom do you seek out the smaller or thinner one in the group and then study them further. In the same way, bull buyers are after mass. They want bulls that are big enough to carry a heavy service and quickly. High quality still captures value, but high quality that also presses the scale become sale toppers.
The third and what I think is very important is that buyers want a program. They want pen mates that match in quality. They want it because it gives them options. Bull buyers seek predictability. It can be easy to capture a buyer but retaining them is an ongoing battle. Predictable, sustainable cattle are the only sure-fire way to keep them coming back.
In this Spring issue, we have once again included our popular annual AI Sire Directory. I’d like to thank all our members/breeders/advertisers for choosing to showcase your programs in our Spring/AI Sire Directory issue! You’re going to find some great bulls to consider using in your future breeding opportunities.
Before I wrap up this column, I’m excited to remind everyone of our 2024 ABHA Junior National event, which will be held June 12-15 at the Hyder-Burks Agricultural Pavilion at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, TN. This will be our 8th annual Junior National. Our Junior’s Committee has been working hard planning this year’s event to keep building on the momentum from years past. We invite anyone who would like to attend this year’s event to join us in Cookeville! Also, do not forget our junior scholarship program for those that will be continuing their education after high school. To date, the support, and contributions to the scholarship fund by the membership has been nothing short of amazing. If you would like to contribute to the scholarship fund, we are always accepting contributions.
I hope you enjoy this Spring issue in addition to the AI Sire Directory. Please reach out if you have any questions or ideas for how we can continue to make a positive impact for the breed and this industry. We truly have some of the most dedicated, selfless people in the cattle business that support the ABHA and its members. Let’s continue to show the industry what the American Black Hereford has to offer.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Well spring has sprung in many parts of the country as we experienced an unseasonably warm winter in many parts of the country. Spring in a farmer’s eyes is always welcome. That means new calf crop is on the ground, not so many trips to a dwindling haystack and lower input cost are around the corner.
As most all of you know, cattle prices are as good as they have ever been, which for a cow/ calf guy, they are in the driver seat for once. But also, for the seed stock guy, that puts us in a great position, too. When your bull buyer can go sell 2 calves and they bring over $1,600 to $1,800 each, he isn’t as nervous about spending $3,500 to $6,000 for a good bull. As many of you can relate, there are still people out there who want a $2,000 bull. When those buyers show up and they will, tell them to go sell 2 or 3 of their calves and bring you the check and then they can have the bull. Oh, and by the way, his salvage value is worth over $2k. When you explain it to them like that you can normally make the sale. You might also remind them those calves are bringing $3.85 a pound! If they bought a good bull and weaned each calf 50 lbs. heavier than the below standard bull they are used to, that equals almost $200 per calf. If they have 25 calves a year, times $200 per calf, then wow that is $5k a year! I know this isn’t the first time I have said this same message, but as ABHA breeders, we need to be familiar with this concept and rehearse it until you have it down. I can also say from experience in 20 years of selling cattle and selling over 250 bulls a year, I believe in using all the tools available such as EPDs, but at the end of the day keep it simple. I promise you using both of these concepts will help when making a sale. As I have traveled to several of our breeder sales, I have seen such an improvement in the quality of the cattle in our breed. It amazes me year after year just how much progress we have made. That quality has then translated into the cattle doing very well in the sale. There are several more coming this Spring as well. Remember our Southern Classic sale is on April 19th in Henderson, TX. Come out or get online and support our breeders that help put it on. If you are in the market for more Black Hereford animals, there are plenty of sales coming up to improve any herd.
As I said, I have seen such an improvement in our breed, and I credit it mostly to two things. One is outside genetics. We have the best of both worlds with Angus and Hereford for a gene pool and you as breeders are taking full advantage of it and it shows. The second thing is you as a breeder are willing to step out and use those genetics. I promise you those of you doing that are seeing the benefits of it today. The cattle as a whole are better than they have ever been and in such a short amount of time we have completely changed our breed for the better. I remember when we got started in the breed and selling bulls. I had people in the past come to look at the bulls and within 5 minutes leave and basically told me the bulls weren’t good enough for their cows. Remember we live in cattle county, so these guys know what a good bull looks like. The first time that happened to me I said then and there we have to improve our animals. The concept is great, we just need to improve them and the only way I knew to do it was through Angus and Hereford. That was several years ago and those same guys that said our bulls were not good enough are our best customers today. What changed? The quality of our cattle.
I hope to see many of you at some of our upcoming sales. Until then, may God bless each of you and your families and keep his hand of protection over each of us and our nation.
God Bless.
