Top Science Draws Media Coverage in Press Conference

Paul M. George, MD, PhD, MSE, FAAN, chair of the Science Committee, spoke to reporters during a press conference on research from the 2024 Annual Meeting.

Presenters were Masoom Desai, MD, of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque; Charles Chiu, MD, PhD, of the University of California, San Francisco; and Prashanth Rajarajan, MD, PhD, of Mass General Brigham in Boston.

Desai’s abstract is titled “Impact of Automated Seizure-burden Measurements on Functional Outcomes: Sub-analysis of SAFER-EEG Trial.”

Chiu presented on “Pathogen Detection and Associated Patient Characteristics from Clinical Metagenomic Next-generation Sequencing Testing for Neurological Infections.”

Rajarajan’s abstract is “Multi-institutional Study of Neurologic Outcomes in People with Multiple Sclerosis Who Are Treated with Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors for Oncologic Indication.”

Alzheimer's Disease Biomarker Testing and Amyloid Monoclonals in Clinical Practice Is Focus of Today’s Neuroscience in the Clinic Session

Experts will discuss integrating biomarkers to diagnosis and treatment decisions related to anti-amyloid monoclonal antibodies for early symptomatic Alzheimer's disease; the indications and potential challenges/pitfalls of interpretation of molecular PET biomarkers; and appropriate use and current limitations of fluid biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease pathophysiology during this afternoon’s Neuroscience in the Clinic session. Taking place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Bluebird 1A, the session will be led by Directors Vijay K. What brings you to the Annual Meeting?

I’m hoping to network, meet other students, residents, and attendings—just looking for both mentors and other people on this journey to neurology.

What have you enjoyed at the meeting?

The medical student symposium. First, we had the medical student meet and greet, and it was nice to see everyone’s face. We had to make three friends before leaving and I thought that was helpful. You get people’s numbers and then you can text them, like “Where are you? Where are you headed?”

We had the symposium after that where we got to talk to actual attendings and residents. They had it set up with different specialties so you could go from one to the other, whatever you were interested in, to learn from people and get their information. That was why I was here.

I received an award (the 2024 Bruce S. Schoenberg International Award in Neuroepidemiology). I applied because I went to the Annual Meeting for the first time last year, and I noticed that the conference is so big. I mean, when you look at the Mexican Conference of Neurology, we have around a thousand attendees. Here you have many more.

What else have you enjoyed about the Annual Meeting?

What I like about this conference is the opportunity for networking—you get to do a lot with the big names around the world. You can communicate with them, establish a network, and look for research and learning opportunities. There’s a lot of people, a lot of things to do, a lot of people to communicate with.

I really enjoy the learning here. I'm one of the neurocritical care fellows at UT Southwestern, so for me it was just kind of a blessing to be accepted for two posters here at the conference. Honestly, I’m enjoying being part of the action and meeting some of the other neurointensive care attendings.

Have you enjoyed presenting your poster? It’s been a wonderful experience. I was also a speaker at the medical student symposium yesterday talking about neurocritical care—it was rewarding to give back as a mentor.

Yeah. It's definitely thought-provoking. It helps me when I'm preparing any future manuscripts or just thinking about the field in general.

What else have you enjoyed about the Annual Meeting?

There's a lot I've enjoyed about this Annual Meeting! Just finding out about new, really interesting areas in the field that I don't know about, that I can then go research more. There's just so much that I don't know that I don't know. It’s really exciting to learn about.
