Experts Debate Most Current, Controversial Issues in This Morning’s Plenary Session Some of today’s most debatable issues will be explored during today’s lively Controversies in Neurology Plenary Session which runs this morning from 9:15 to 11:15 in Hall 4A. The session will showcase six experts discussing the most current and controversial issues in neuroscience using a debate-style format that will see two speakers arguing one side of a topic, followed by a rebuttal. The session will be moderated by Martinson K. Arnan, MD, FAAN, and Amy R. Brooks-Kayal, MD, FAAN.

The poster hall will kick off its first session on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.,

Learn More About UCNS Certification and Accreditation Staff of the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties are on hand this week at the Annual Meeting to answer questions about UCNS certification, continuous certification, and training program accreditation for the subspecialties of Autonomic Disorders, Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry, Clinical Neuromuscular Pathology, Geriatric Neurology, Headache Medicine, Interventional Neurology, Neurocritical Care, Neuroimaging, and Neuro-oncology.

The UCNS booth 1808, located in the “Association Neighborhood” near the entrance to the Exhibit Hall area, will be open Sunday through Wednesday during exhibit hours. The UCNS also will be participating in the Trainee and Faculty Reception on Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and presenting at the Section Showcase.

The UCNS was founded by representatives of the American Academy of Neurology, American Neurological Association, Association of University Professors of Neurology, Child Neurology Society, and Professors of Child Neurology, who were planning a new organization to provide a means for formal recognition of emerging neurologic subspecialties and an opportunity to improve training for subspecialties through the development of training and clinical competence standards. Incorporated in 2003, the UCNS promotes high-quality patient-centered care through accreditation of training programs and certification of physicians in neurologic subspecialties.

Temperament is the inherent personality unique to each individual. Social science has determined that there are four dominant categories of temperament and there are methods to discern which is the prominent personality-type of an individual. Q: What resources are available to a neurology administrator through the AAN? How can the AAN help connect me with my colleagues?

A: The AAN has many resources dedicated to help business administrators (BA) and their practices thrive. If you aren’t already, consider becoming an AAN member.

BA membership provides access to SynapseSM, the AAN’s online discussion boards, where you can reach your peers; free education products, such as the BA Education Series; and discounts on registration to the AAN’s conferences.

Administrators can reach colleagues in a variety of ways. In addition to Synapse, email practice@aan.com to reach the Business Support Network, where administrators are ready to help answer any practice-related questions you may have.

Visiting AAN.com/PracticeResources is a great place to find resources to help you and your practice. The coding resources feature up-to-date information on coding changes and best practices. The operations resources, such as the Top 5 lists and benchmarking data, can help you optimize your practice. And the value-based care resources can help you navigate the Quality Payment Program and support quality improvement in your practice.

CODING

Q. When billing based on Medical Decision Making (MDM) for outpatient E/M services, how should I count multiple tests under the Category I MDM element “Amount and/or Complexity of Data to be Reviewed and Analyzed”? If I order a complete blood count, comprehensive metabolic panel, and a lipid panel, how many unique tests would this be considered?

A. This would count as three unique tests toward meeting the requirement for Category I of the MDM element. Each unique test ordered or reviewed counts and is considered unique even if they are all in the same category of test. Keep in mind, if a test is ordered and results are reviewed as part of an encounter, it is counted as only one data point.

QUALITY PAYMENT PROGRAM

Q: My practice is struggling to identify which quality measures and improvement activities to report for Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) reporting this year. How can I narrow down my options?

A: Each year, the AAN develops updated resources related to the Quality Payment Program (QPP) and MIPS, including identifying measures and activities that are most relevant to neurologists that year. The AAN’s Quality Payment Program webpage offers a resource on how to “Navigate the Quality Component of MIPS,” which includes the neurology measures available in MIPS, including measures in the Axon Registry ® . For the Improvement Activities component, the AAN has developed a resource on “Improvement Activities for Neurologists to Consider” that can help practices determine what practice improvement activities they may already be participating in and can attest to for credit in MIPS. You can access these resources and learn more about MIPS at AAN.com/QPP. Additionally, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has a tool to search and navigate quality measures by specialty at qpp.cms.gov.

Gillespie, PhD; and Annabelle Singer, PhD, as they discuss neural mechanisms underlying memory processes and introduce attendees to novel stimulation-based and neurofeedback approaches being developed to promote memoryrelated brain activity in Alzheimer's and other diseases of aging. The presenters will also discuss how such strategies for manipulating brain activity hold promise for therapeutic benefit, as well as shed light on fundamental mechanisms of cognitive processes. Mihaly Hajos, PhD, and Joey Hsu, will each present abstracts related to this topic. The session will conclude with a panel discussion along with opportunity for questions. I love the connections you make and the ability to reach out to other people across the country that are doing what you’re doing. And the barriers between the MDs and business administrators are nonexistent. It’s a really great group.

Things to Enjoy in Seattle

Don’t miss the Pike Place Market, which is partially open air and encompasses several levels. There are many tourist attractions within the market area, including a gum wall, and a multitude of places to eat.

Ballard Locks near downtown are free to visit and open every day. The engineering behind the locks is very interesting. You also can visit the fish ladder for the chance to see salmon travelling upriver to spawn.
