Welcome to the third annual edition of the 6° catalog and exhibition. This publication presents self-selected work from the graduating students of the College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD) at the American University of Sharjah (AUS), and coincides with a single-night exhibition at the college on June 1st, 2013.

CAAD shares the vision of excellence and relevance in education, the arts, and culture of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the American University of Sharjah.

The graduating students will, and the alumni and faculty of the college continue to, shape the creative culture and advance the creative economy of Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates, and the broader region.

This assembly of student work references numerous disciplines, traditions, trajectories, cultures, and aspirations. It is a loose collection of projects bound by place (CAAD) and time (2013). It is a momentary sampling of interests, explorations, and fascinations on the minds of the current graduating class. Therefore, it is here that we find a cross-section of creative expression that articulates a broad spectrum of ideas, scales, issues, mediums, paths, and processes.

Each day at CAAD, we create meaning and identity through creative, intelligent, and skillful acts and processes. All of us at the college are very proud of our soon-to-be alumni, and extend our continuing support and high expectations. While we correctly and optimistically refer to this departure, this passing on and movement forward, as the “Commencement Ceremonies” of June 8th, 2013, it is in fact a true scattering of the graduating students. But this scattering, this commencement of additional phases in one’s life, is always tethered to CAAD and AUS. Each graduating student has made an impression on CAAD as has CAAD helped form each student. Each student has made their mark; a lasting imprint has been formed, and the college and university are the better for your presence, time, efforts, and achievements. We have formed each other. CAAD, as the place formed, with small dents or large impressions, remains here – and always open to you. We know that you have never fully left us because of the marks you have made, our confidence in you and expectations from you, and your continued relation with us as alumni.

We all share the desire for the best future for our graduating students, as well as share in the appreciation of their time and efforts spent at the college and university. Thank you as well to all family members and friends, to the professional communities, to the administration, and to all staff and faculty members.
