American University of Sharjah holds cyber-security camp Although businesses in the Middle East are becoming aware of the increasing risks of cyber-attacks and taking the necessary measures to protect themselves, a high percentage of smartphone and computer users do not realise the importance of taking similar precautions. With the increase in smartphones, social media and technology, users need to be mindful of ways to protect themselves from being hacked. To increase this awareness, American University of Sharjah(AUS) held its 5th Cyber Security Boot Camp recently, intended for general computer users, to increase the knowledge of cyber-crime in the external community. Participating professionals included students from AUS and University of Sharjah, as well as representatives from Honeywell Middle East and Starcom MediaVest Group. Published on: Section: Page:

Blazing her own trail Hessa Al Malek tried to register for an engineering programme without telling her parents. It was 1994 and few Emirati women worked outside the home. Those who did worked at segregated workplaces. Before her registration could be approved, she required a parental letter of consent "because it was weird for ladies to study engineering", she recalls. Now, 20 years later, she's the Dubai-based urban-planning director at the Ministry of Public Works. After graduating from Al Ain's UAE University, she joined the Ras Al Khaimah Public Works Department. At the office, they kept dealing with us as females, not as engineers," she recalls. "But you know, we insisted on going." That department is now full of female employees. In 2002, Al Malek began evening classes towards her master's degree at the American University in Sharjah. Saying sorry: A damage control stunt Apologies these days are like seashells, spread all over the shores of newspapers and social networking sites. Almost every other day one comes across reports in the print and electronic media of a host of ‘sorrys’ from celebrities, including sports stars, high-profile politicians, TV anchorpersons, even sporting team owners. They are for a range of issues, from politics to racism to clandestine affairs. To illustrate. Recently, the well-known music band One Direction’s singer Liam Payne apologised for a video of his band mates Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson smoking “a joint”. A few residents based in the UAE think it’s a stunt to airbrush the flaws of negative publicity over their acts. Emirati Bashayer Arif, a recent graduate from the American University of Sharjah, says “I think that sometimes confronting criticism can push someone to reflect on the language they use and realise how their words have the power to hurt someone. We’ve all been guilty of saying things that are insensitive or politically incorrect and, in retrospect, we realise we shouldn’t have said them. But of course, apologies aren’t sincere with everyone. For some people, it is simply damage control to maintain one’s reputation or status.” Published on: Section: Page:
