TheRoanokeFireDepartmenthadaremarkable yearin2023,drivenbystrongcitymanagement andanengagedcommunity.Theadditionofa firetrainingfacilityandasecondstation significantlyimprovedresponsetimesand operationalefficiency,markingthebeginningof aneweraforRoanoke.However,thetrue strengthofthedepartmentliesinitsdedicated personnel,bothlongstandingprofessionalsand newlyhiredrecruits.
With24personnelassignedtoshifts,the departmentconsistentlyprovidesexceptional servicetotheresidentsandvisitorsofRoanoke.
Theircapabilitiesextendbeyondfirefighting, encompassingexcellenceinEmergencyMedical Services(EMS)andactivecommunity engagement.Thedepartment'scommitmentto itsmotto,"CommittedtoExcellence,"isevidentin everyaspectofitsoperations.
WhatsetstheRoanokeFireDepartmentapartis itsdistinctcultureoffamilyandcamaraderie. TheRoanokeFireDepartmentwascreatedin1948andbecamefundedby theCityofRoanokein1972.InOctoberof1999,thedepartmenthireditsfirst full-timestaff.Today,thedepartmentconsistsof24careerfirefightersand issupplementedbyeightpart-timefirefightersandtwovolunteers.Thefire departmentoperateswith8personnelassignedtoeachshift,supported byanadministrativestaffoftheFireChief,AssistantChiefofOperations, AssistantChiefofFirePrevention,BattalionChiefofTrainingandEMS,and anAdministrativeAssistant.Thedepartmentservesapermanent populationof10,000andanestimateddaytimepopulationof45,000.The responsedistrict,includingcontractedareas,is approximately13squaremiles.
TheRoanokeFireDepartmentisasuburbanall-riskfiredepartmentthat providesprofessionalfirefightingservices,emergencymedicalservices,fire prevention,andannualfiresafetyinspectionsofallbusinesses,plan reviews,andpubliceducation.
Lastyear,theRoanokeFireDepartmentrespondedto2051callsforservice.
Thedepartmenthasexperiencedatleastasixpercentincreaseincallsfor serviceoverthelastfiveyearsandexpectsasevenpercentincrease duringthecurrentcalendaryear.
ThefiredepartmentbelongstotheNortheastFireDepartmentAssociation (NEFDA),afourteen-cityorganizationprovidingtechnicalresourcesand expertisetoitsmembers.NEFDAprovidesthenecessaryequipmentand manpowerforspecializedresponsesthatourcitycouldnotprovidealone. Servicesincludehazardousmaterialsresponse,high/lowanglerescue, confinedspacerescue,trenchrescue,structuralcollapseresponse,swift waterrescue,EODresponse,andbariatricEMStransportservices.
TheRoanokeFireDepartmentalsoassistsinprovidingstatewideaidefor manmadeandnaturaldisastersthroughorganizationssuchas;Texas IntrastateMutualAidSystem,EmergencyMedicalTaskforce–2,Texas Taskforce–2,andTexasAllHazardsIncidentManagementTeam.
TheinaugurationFireStationTwomarksa significantmilestoneinensuring communitysafetyandresilience.Asthe station'sdoorsswungopenforthefirst time,itsymbolizedacommitmentto protectinglivesandpropertywithinits jurisdiction.
Theopeningofanewfirestationfostersa senseofreassuranceamongresidents, knowingthathighlytrainedpersonnelare nowcloserathandtoswiftlyaddressany emergencythatmayarise.Itwillserveas abeaconofhopeandsecurity,standing readytoserveandprotectthecommunity foryearstocome.
FireStationOnetrainingtowerinstallation andimplementation.Havingafiretraining toweronsiteisessentialforfire departmenttrainingbothforthecityand regionalpartnersbecauseitallows firefighterstosimulaterealisticscenarios inacontrolledenvironment.Thishands-on experiencehelpsthemdevelopessential skillssuchassearchandrescue, ventilation,andfiresuppression.
Thetower'smultiplelevelsenable firefighterstopracticeworkingatheights, crucialforhigh-riseemergencies. Additionally,thecontrolledenvironment reducestheriskofinjuriesandfosters teamworkandcommunicationamong firefighters.Overall,thetowerprovidesa valuableopportunityforfirefighterstogain practicalexperience,familiarize themselveswithequipment,andimprove theirreadinesstorespondtoemergencies effectively
In2023,theRoanokeFireDepartment receivedanupgradeinpatientcare performancefromtheAmericanHeart Association,earningthe2023Mission: LifelineEMSSilveraward.
ThisrecognitionplacesRoanoke amonganelitegroupofprehospital providersacknowledgedbythe AmericanHeartAssociationfortheir dedicationandachievementin implementingahigherstandardof care.Thisentailsensuringthatevery STEMIpatientreceivestreatment accordingtonationallyaccepted evidence-basedguideline recommendationsandstandards.
The fire open house event shattered all previous attendance records, drawing an unprecedented crowd of enthusiastic community members eager to engage with their local firefighters and emergency responders.
The event buzzed with energy as families, neighbors, and individuals of all ages flooded in, united by a shared interest in fire safety and preparedness. From interactive demonstrations showcasing firefighting equipment to hands-on workshops teaching crucial safety protocols, attendees eagerly participated in every activity offered.
The overwhelming turnout not only highlighted the community's commitment to safety but also fostered a sense of unity and collaboration among residents and emergency services personnel. As the event concluded, it left a lasting impression, setting a new standard for community engagement and fire safety initiatives.

EmergencyMedicalServices(EMS)playacrucialroleinsafeguardingpublichealthand safetybyprovidingrapid,effective,andspecializedmedicalcareinemergency situations.TheimportanceofEMScanbeunderstoodfromseveralperspectives:timely medicalcare,prehospitalcare,publichealthandsafety,communityintegrations, specializedcareandtransportandcontinuousqualityimprovement.
RoanokeFireisproudtoofferseveralfireandlifesafetyprogramstothecitizensof Roanoke Firesafetyeducatorsconducttraining,providelecturesandfiresafety demonstrationsinelementaryschools,homeownerassociations,businessesandsenior centersfreeofcharge.
Trainingsessionsaddressthecommoncausesoffireandfireinjuriesinthehome,as wellasprovideinformationonhowtopreventfiresandwhattodoincaseoffire.The firesafetyeducationprogramstargetthosemostvulnerabletofire--youngchildren andolderadults
RoanokeFirehasadedicated groupofindividualsthat participateinRoanokeKlownzon Fire. ThisyeartheKlownzhave expandedeventofferingsfrom5to 9,markingasignificant80% increaseinthenumberof communityevents.Thisgrowth reflectsdedicationtoproviding diverseandenrichingexperiences forourresidents.
CPR(CardiopulmonaryResuscitation)classesarecrucialforacquiring life-savingskillsinemergencieswhensomeone'shearthasstoppedor they'renotbreathingproperly.Inresponsetothisneed,our departmenthasconducted21CPRclassesforbothcitystaffand communitymembers.Theseclasseshavesignificantlyincreasedthe numberofindividualsequippedtostepinandsavealifewhen necessary.
TheRoanokeFireHonorGuardwasactivelyinvolvedin11eventsacross theDFWmetroplex.Lookingbackonthepastyear,wetakeprideinour diverseparticipation,rangingfromsolemnmemorialstojoyful celebrations Ourdedicationtoupholdingtraditions,servingthe community,andmarkingimportantoccasionsremainsunwavering.
The Roanoke Fire Department deployed in response to 20 requests for assistance from State of Texas in 2023. These deployments generated $1,139,060 in reimbursement funding for the department.
