shopping during the holiday season.

With the Thanksgiving quickly approaching, it’s a pleasure to watch as everything in our lives gradually becomes transformed by the joy of the approaching holiday season, especially on Amelia Island. Of course, one of the most cherished traditions of the season is the exchange of gifts with those we love. Finding just the right gift for someone special in our lives is a wonderful feeling, and it is at the heart of the Christmas season. Each year in November, we take great pleasure in presenting our annual Holiday Gift Guide. Our goal is to highlight some of the fabulous finds available at our local shops during the holiday shopping season. Whether you’re searching for the perfect gift or sneaking something for yourself, we’re certain you’ll find it here on Amelia Island. As always, our goal with this issue is to save you from travelling over the bridge too often on those frantic pilgrimages to the mall and to save you from carpel tunnel syndrome brought on by too much online clicking. Just step away from your computer and come on out to meet your friends and neighbors! When you visit Amelia Island’s terrific neighborhood shops, you’ll find friendly, personal service and a wide selection of unique gift items, and you’ll be supporting the many merchants who help make our island a great place to live and to visit. And while you’re out, you may run into an old friend and enjoy a cup of coffee or some holiday cheer. Watching our island transform itself into a beautiful, warm-weather wonderland for Christmas is always a great pleasure, and enjoying the season by shopping here and sharing good cheer is a memorable part of the holiday season. In addition, we are happy once again to present a preview of the Amelia Island Museum of History’s 2021 Holiday Home Tour in our monthly “Island Home” feature. The Holiday Home Tour is one of the museum’s most important fundraisers, and this year the tour includes four beautiful homes in historic downtown Fernandina Beach, all dressed in their holiday finest. We hope everyone has a chance to enjoy the tour this year. Also in this issue, we check in with the guys from Foar from Home, who will be rowing across the Atlantic in December in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge to raise money and awareness about the very real problem of veteran suicide; salute the tenth and final edition of the Reindeer Run, a road race for the whole community, which has become one of Amelia Island’s favorite Christmas traditions; offer an “Island Entertaining” feature on incorporating Florida’s bounty of delicious oranges into your holiday menu; and much more. Best wishes to all for a Happy Thanksgiving! See you around the island!

L. MOORE AESTHETICS MOVES INTO NEW LOCATION AT 1815 SOUTH 8TH STREET Laurie Smith Moore will be the first to tell you, “Our new building is a curiosity, and I want to share our story with the community!” Laurie, who came here nearly ten years-ago, loves Amelia Island, and as the small business owner of L. Moore Aesthetics, alongside her husband’s local business, Richard Moore Landscapes, wants to see our island thrive, especially on South 8th Street. “L. Moore Aesthetics opened in 2017, and since then we’ve grown and realized we need more space, not only for our clients to enjoy, but for us to grow. Organically, 1815 South 8th Street found us!” The new location, called The Loft at 1815, is home to Laurie’s business, which offers full aesthetician services, and an onsite medical professional offering injectables and fillers, along with selected medical treatments. As part of her passion, Laurie wants to contribute to the makeover of South 8th Street and invest in the community with her new location. Her central passion is to create a place where you not only experience the finest skincare on the island, but also find a place to gather, learn, and relax. The Loft at 1815 offers this all—and Moore! For more information, visit their website at lmooreaesthetics.com.

The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival invites you to join the kickoff of both their 21st season and the holidays with an uplifting and joyful evening of Big Band music. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and special guest vocalist Ashley Pezzotti will fill you with cheer as they perform their unique big band version of holiday classics on Friday, December 3 at 7:30 p.m., at First Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach. Christopher Rex, the festival’s General and Artistic Director, says, “Our goal has always been to bring the best artists across multiple genres to perform in an intimate setting. This coming season will feature an exceptional lineup of diverse artists. The festival’s ongoing success and ability to attract premier artists is a direct attribute to the generosity of the Amelia Island community. We are grateful for our patrons, contributors, sponsors, and volunteers who graciously give their time and talent to ensure the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival continues to be recognized as one of the nation’s premier classical music festivals.” The festival is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization. AMELIA ISLAND CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL BIG BAND HOLIDAY CONCERT WITH WYNTON MARSALIS

“AN EVENING IN DECEMBER” RETURNS TO AMELIA BAPTIST CHURCH Amelia Baptist Church invites you to enjoy their 25th annual “An Evening in December” Christmas concert next month. This annual event offers a celebration of Christmas through music, drama, and recently, a Bethlehem-inspired village with live characters, a petting zoo, and a scavenger hunt for children. This year, the evening begins with a mini-concert full of your favorite Christmas carols followed by a guided walk through the events that led up to Jesus’ birth. “We are proud to partner with volunteers representing more than ten different local churches to present ‘The Evening,’” says event chair Annie Rowden. “It is an honor to bless our community each year through this event. Our goal is to bring the true meaning of Christmas – the birth of Jesus, the savior of the world – to the front and center of attendees’ hearts and minds. We love seeing families and extended families come together and celebrate the true meaning of the season.” An Evening in December will be presented Thursday, December 2, Friday, December 3, and Sunday, December 5. The event is free but has limited seating. Groups and individuals should make reservations by visiting aneveningindecember2021. eventbrite.com or www.ameliabaptist.org.

A

rt on Centre is Amelia Island’s premier fine art gallery, located in the historic district of downtown Fernandina Beach. Over 30 artists from all over the United States and Canada are represented in the gallery, with an emphasis on contemporary artwork. The gallery was opened in 2014 by Jim and Kara Lawrence and partners Phil and Debbie Lehman. They created an inspiring space, chose an amazing group of established artists, and developed a loyal clientele from near and far. Susan McCranie Siegmund bought the gallery in late 2018, and along with her daughter, maintained the winning pattern already established, while adding several innovations along the way. Art on Centre invites art collectors, established and brand new, to visit. Open on Wednesdays through Sundays at noon, the gallery’s three large showrooms are full of an amazing variety of oils on canvas; copper on wood panel; aluminum panels with bold and colorful images, using German automotive paint and automotive clear coat; and seascapes that look like photos but, upon closer

inspection, reveal the brush strokes that make them unforgettable. Artrageous Art Walk occurs on the second Saturday of each month and features one of the gallery’s artists each time. In October, Art on Centre welcomed St. Augustine’s Claire Kendrick, who paints serene landscapes of both the marsh and the ocean, as well as charming florals. November’s event features Florida artist Lisa Schuster. Her oils on aluminum panel are alive with bold colors, swirls of texture, and come in a wide variety of sizes for convenient placement on any wall. To wrap up this year, Charlotte’s Wan Marsh will visit the gallery. Her dynamic abstracts on canvas provide energy and sophistication to any environment. As the Christmas season approaches, give yourself the gift of fine art. Since many of Art on Centre’s artists also create unique commissioned works to satisfy the most discriminating of tastes, there is plenty of time for your own gift to appear under the tree. Art on Centre is located at 503-C Centre Street. For more information, visit their website at www.artoncentre.com.

L

ott’s Furniture is a third-generation family business founded in Waycross, Georgia. “It was started by my grandfather, Jack H. Lott, in 1947,” says Laura Lott Harris. One aspect of the family’s business that always attracted Laura is buying and merchandising. “During college, I would work at the Atlanta AmericasMart in the fine linens showroom, and then I would help my parents shop for our showroom in Waycross. It helped inspire my passion for it.” Fourteen years ago, Laura came back to Lott’s after working in the corporate world for a few years. Her favorite part of the business? “We have lots of repeat customers, wonderful clients that I’m very grateful for. I’ve enjoyed getting to know many of them over the years as they have let us help them furnish their homes.” You’ll find the best home furnishing selections for every room in your home in the store’s beautiful, updated showrooms. No item is too small or job too big for the Lott’s Furniture team. They’re also happy to assist you through phone calls, text, and email. When Laura isn’t at the store, she spends time with her family. She and her husband, John, have a four-year-old son, Luke, and a one-year-old daughter, Ellie. “We also have a Maltese, Salty, that’s 12, but we still call her our puppy. We love spending time at the beach and dining out around the island. We’re fortunate to live in such a great place.” For more information, stop by the store at 2110 Sadler Square, call (904) 261-6333, or visit www.lottsfurniture.com.

Bling Staging and Redesign

inda Love of Bling Staging and Redesign has over 20 years of experience in Interior Design. Originally from South Carolina, she lived in Colorado for 18 years, where she and her daughter owned a store in Pagosa Springs called The Hideout, a store filled to the brim with rustic one-of-a-kind pieces. Linda also worked as an interior designer there, teaming up with contractors on renovations and new homes under construction. She loved her work, but when her daughter and granddaughter moved to Palm Beach, she decided it was time to retire and followed them to Florida. However, Palm Beach was a little too busy for Linda. “I’d visited Fernandina Beach many times and I decided it just suited me better,” she remembers. When she moved to Amelia Island from Palm Beach five years ago, Linda bought a new house that was a blank canvas. In making it her own, she realized how much she missed her work and meeting new people. “So I took a course in Staging with Transformations in Jacksonville and got certified,” says Linda. “The next step was to come up with a name for my business. People always talk about my ‘bling,’ so the name was decided and Bling Staging and Redesign was born.” Linda’s motto, “We Bring the Bling,” is as much about her fun and lively personality as it is about the beauty she brings to the homes she works on. She is a whirlwind of a lady, who brings a “WOW” factor into every room she enters. For more information, give Linda a call at (970) 946-7467 or email her at lindablove01@hotmail.com.

ach year, over 6,000 veterans lose their life to suicide. Six thousand. It’s hard to imagine that the same people who put their lives on the line for others can end up feeling completely alone. Many veterans suffer from PTSD, which impacts every aspect of day-to-day life. Lack of affordable housing, financial problems, and the struggle to fit back into civilian life can be overwhelming for anyone. Imagine how overwhelming it is for the men and women who suffer from PTSD and the mental and physical issues that accompany that diagnosis. Americans need to understand that many of its veterans are struggling. That is exactly why Paul Lore, veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Billy Cimino, veteran of the United States Army, Cameron Hansen, veteran of the United States Air Force, and A.M. ‘Hupp’ Huppmann, veteran of the United States Navy, will be rowing the 3,000-mile course from La Gomera, Canary 39 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Islands, to Antigua. The Foar From Home team is joining 40 other row teams to compete in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in December. Their mission? To bring awareness to the overwhelming problem of veteran suicide. But before we look at this incredible feat, let’s go back to 2018. Three years ago, Billy Cimino and Paul Lore created a paddle event called Cross the Line – Paddle for Veterans. It was a fun and successful event that brought members of the community together to show their support. More than 80 people showed up with their kayaks and over $8,000 was raised. The money was donated to Fight Oar Die, a nonprofit Veteran Organization focusing on PTSD and veteran suicide. Inspired by Fight Oar Die and the mission, Billy and Paul formed a non-profit organization called the Cross the Line Foundation. Cross the Line continues to fight the good fight for continued on next page

veterans from all branches of service and they have experienced an outpouring of support from the residents and business owners in Fernandina Beach. In January, they unveiled the Cross the Line Scholarship, which will award four $500 scholarships to veterans and/ or children of veterans attending college or vocational school, and in June they had their third Cross the Line Paddle for Veterans event. The funds raised are allocated directly to agencies that assist veterans with cognitive counseling, housing, employment, healthcare, and research. Fueled by the tremendous support they have received and Paul Lore’s belief that the ocean has the power to bring people together, as well as a significant power to heal people, Paul and Billy asked Cameron and Hup to join them for an even bigger challenge. They said yes, and in 2019, the Foar from Home team was born. The Foar from Home team has partnered with the Cross the Line Foundation to raise awareness and funds for programs like K-9 for Warriors, which is the nation’s largest provider of trained service dogs to military veterans, and Fire Watch, which supports Northeast Florida’s fight to end veteran suicide. Foar from Home’s tagline, “It Takes an Island to Cross an Ocean,” is true. The team continues to receive an outpouring of local love and support. The volunteers who show up at the Cross the Line paddle events, the businesses that plan fundraisers, the people behind the scenes that maintain the equipment and keep it running smoothly, are all incredible. Not to mention the businesses and residents who have donated money and/or supplies to help the Foar from Home team turn their dream into reality. The amount of work that’s gone into preparing for the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge has been non-stop, but it’s a labor of love, and everyone is happy to support the mission and make a change in the lives of all U.S. veterans who are struggling. For more information on their crossing and how you can help them meet their goal of raising $500,000 for veterans in need, visit their website at www.foarfromhome.com.

running with the

Reindeer

As the Christmas season and its varied traditions draw closer, get ready for Amelia Island’s annual Reindeer Run, which celebrates its tenth and final year in December. BY JULIE SIMMONS • PHOTOS COURTESY OF AMELIA RUNNERS

T

he first Sunday of December is a standing date for many on Amelia Island. Runners lace up their shoes to hit the pavement for 13.1 or 3.1 miles. Walkers dress in festive apparel and meet their friends ready for some exercise and camaraderie. Volunteers bundle up ready to brave the cool air as they direct the crowds and serve them water along the course. And the energetic Reindeer Run race directors, Pattee Boler and Susie DeMille, are all smiles, greeting friends, handling any race-day hiccups, and making sure that Santa is at the starting line to announce, “On your marks, get set, go!” The tradition started with a casual conversation 11 yearsago when Pattee and Susie traveled to another city for a race and thought, “Wouldn’t it be amazing if Amelia had its own half-marathon that toured our natural beauty!” From that inspiration, Pattee and Susie began to explore the possibilities; they crowd-sourced the concept with runners at the McArthur YMCA, athletes they’d bump into in town, 49 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

and, of course, the Amelia Island Runners Club, who endorsed the idea and partnered with Pattee and Susie to bring it to life. “The Reindeer Run is unique in that it’s so much more than just a run,” explains Pattee. “It’s truly a family event with something for everyone. From the certified races for the athletes to the one-mile, half-mile, and 100 yard dash with Santa for the children, a Kid’s Zone, Beer Garden, and this year, a 5k with your furry friends, everyone can come and have a great time!” “Pattee hit the nail on the head,” says Susie. “I love having my whole family involved. My Dad dresses up as Santa and runs with the littles and his buddies host the Beer Garden; Mom runs registration and coordinates the race packets, and of course, my boys have run the half-marathon every single year. In fact, this is our tenth year, and Joey is 20 now, so since he was 10, he’s run 13.1 miles each year. And his training starts and ends on race day!” she laughs. continued on next page

When I asked the team why they keep up this hard work year after year, they were both quick to share the personal joy they experience when a runner finishes their first race, whether it’s a 5K or half-marathon. “It’s just a privilege to be part of this accomplishment. And it’s even better when you get to hand them their medal,” Pattee smiles. The pair was quick to highlight that this race hasn’t happened because of “them.” “The community comes together year after year to rally around this event and support us,” Susie emphasized. “Over the years, Fernandina Beach High School’s Little Women Club and National Honor Society have been instrumental, along with groups including, The Y, Journey Church, Hot Paws, Newcomers Club, and so many more—every single volunteer is important and appreciated!” Looking back with pride on these past ten years, Pattee and Susie are beaming as they prepare to celebrate the final Reindeer Run on December 5 this year. “We want as many of you as possible to come join us for our last Reindeer Run,” they say. “You can count on Christmas Spirit, a course traversing charming neighborhoods, Egan’s Creek Greenway, Fort Clinch State Park, and Olde Towne, which is always full of energetic supporters, Christmas Carolers and bands, and of course, the notorious reindeer marking each and every mile up to the finish line.” And when you finish, Santa will be serving fresh baked cookies and milk! IN THE GARDEN Dichorisandra Thyrsiflora

vivid and variegated As the cooler months approach and our landscapes have fewer colorful blossoms, add interest to your garden with variegated foliage, like the evergreen Phormium Blondie. BY BETTY MORRELL

W

e are quickly entering into the holiday season! It is a wonderful time of year, and also the best time to plant bulbs for spring blooming, as well as any plants that you want in your garden for the next season. Variegated foliage can make your garden come alive and that is just what Phormium Blondie does. This evergreen has year-round interest. It grows from 1 to 2 feet in height and 3 to 4 feet in width. Blondie has bright, variegated cream-and-green foliage, with a unique weeping habit. Blondie is a PP plant that is perfect for the tropical gardens, container plantings, accents, and borders. It makes an awesome splash when used in mass plantings. Plant in full sun to part-shade and fertilize in spring. This plant may not be ready until 2022. When available, Liberty Landscape should have them. In October, I wrote about the “It’s A Breeze” red ground cover rose. A new one that should be introduced soon is the “It’s a Breeze” white ground cover rose. This PP evergreen rose is an easy-

TIP O OF F T HE M O N T H Check out bulbs in your local nursery, as some daffodils will bloom in our area, and Japanese Iris and Day Lilies are always reliable for color. care, disease- and pest-resistant gem. White Breeze has profuse blooms in the spring and continues to rebloom through the fall. Plant “It’s a Breeze” in full sun, It grows 2 to 3 feet high and spreads 3 to 4 feet in width. It not only provides yearround interest, it also attracts the birds and butterflies. Great in containers, as accent plants, or in mass plantings. Enjoy this one. Now, let’s get back to my Tropical Wonderland. A Blue Ginger that calls your name when you walk by is Dichorisandra Thyrsiflora. It has a

very vivid blue (blue-violet) bloom. This striking Blue Ginger puts out 10-inch tall spikes of the rich purplishblue flowers. They look great in the garden, but they can also be used in cut flower arrangements. According to the University of Florida, this Blue Ginger is not really a ginger; it is in the same family as Spiderwort and Wandering Jew. It is a clumping perennial that can grow 5 to 8 feet tall and 3 feet wide. This plant thrives in the shade. It likes moist but welldrained soil and is generally pest-free. Blue Ginger is typically evergreen, but with a hard freeze it could die back. It will return in the spring, however. The foliage on this Blue Ginger is blue-green, and it is striking. I would like this one in my garden. We will get into the perennials and some more awesome plants, shrubs and trees in coming editions. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! elebrating the holidays on Amelia Island traditionally kicks off with the Museum of History’s Holiday Home Tour. This year’s selection offers historic homes, a cottage, and a condominium located in the downtown Historic District. The homes are decorated for the holidays by local florists and interior designers. Docents in each house share the history of the home, highlight the architectural elements, and guide visitors through the decorated homes. Tour tickets for all four houses can be purchased or tickets can be bought individually.

315 CEDAR STREET The Schultz Home Called “The Captain’s Rest,” the location for this home was chosen for its proximity to downtown and the Amelia River. Chris and Debbie Schultz first visited the island on vacations and weekend getaways. When retirement came, they knew it would be on Amelia Island. The couple built a home that would have plenty of room to host family and friends. Each guest room is a suite with its own bath. The clean lines of the architecture of the home fit into neatly into its Historic District neighborhood. Self-described “foodies,” the couple love to entertain and take advantage of the many tempting restaurants within walking distance. The first floor of the home is designed for entertaining, with its stained concrete floors, wine cove, and a unique oyster-shaped sink. Capitalizing on the proximity to the Intracoastal Waterway, they added a third-floor “observation lounge” complete with a coffee bar and balcony. Decorator- Sharon Haffey

Jim and Lynn Scroggin were both raised in Florida, and they enjoyed part of their honeymoon on Amelia Island. They have moved from Roswell, Georgia, and are Floridians again. They looked for over two years for the house they eventually bought in the Historic District. The house had many things that they liked, including double-galleried wrap-around porches, 12-foot ceilings, heart of pine floors, unique character, and proximity to the downtown. The house has gone through a major renovation, including the replacement of the two distinctive galleried porches. The house was built in built circa 1903 by George A. Latham, whose family had connections to the island lighthouse for three generations. Lighthouse doorstops can be spotted throughout the house. It has 2,080 square feet of living space. Several different owners lived in the home before George Washington Boring purchased the house in 1921. It would stay in his family for 46 years. Like many older homes in the Historic District, at one point in its history it operated as a boarding house with separate stairs climbing to the second floor. Typical of houses of its period, the house has a series of small rooms, each with its own purpose. Of special interest is the home’s renovated kitchen. Decor includes paintings, prints, and photographs from regional artists. A treasured possession is a piece of driftwood the Scroggins call “Angel Wings.” It was found on a beach on the Gulf of Mexico at a pivotal time in Jeff’s young adulthood. Decorator – Lori Ford

ISLAND HOME

318 SOUTH 6TH STREET The Gallardo House This single-story cottage was built in 1948, and then rebuilt in 2004. The owner, Lea Gallardo, first found Fernandina Beach in 1996 while attending a family reunion in Amelia Island Plantation. She looked forward to eventually settling on the island. Buying her house in 1997, Lea describes the original house as a 30-by-30 foot box, basic and livable. The key feature was a large backyard, which did not back up to another house. Things were so basic that the water heater was on the back porch and the washing machine was in the garage. John Cotner did a redesign and an addition to the house, which was completed in 2004. The renovation retained the original charming flavor of the exterior while modernizing and enlarging the inside. The house is open and airy and filled with light, but it’s also very private. One of the highlights of this home are the 66 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

gardens, which include tropical plants, two cactus gardens, and a small pond with a shade garden. In early 2020, a small greenhouse was completed, which houses orchids and begonias and a variety of ongoing experiments. Gallardo describes the things in her house as each having a special meaning to her. The biggest piece of art is a work by Connie Slack, an artist at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia, and the smallest pieces come from street vendors in Mexico, Cuba, Hawaii, and other places she has traveled. Purchases from past Shrimp Festivals are also treasured. Why a yellow door? The owner shared that when moving from Washington, D.C. to Florida, she knew a yellow door meant Florida. Twenty-three years later, she still loves her yellow door! Decorator - Diane La Patra, Amelia’s Treasures

HOLIDAY HOME TOUR TICKETS MUST BE PURCHASED ONLINE To minimize touchpoints and monitor capacity in each of the homes, all visitors must purchase tickets online. Tickets for each house are for sale by entry time and are $7 per house. You can tour one house or all four. The tour is scheduled for Friday, December 3 and Saturday, December 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museum will not be providing shuttle service between houses this year, so be sure to keep travel time between houses in mind when booking multiple houses. Masks are not required. CDC guidelines will be followed. Tour instructions will be posted on the Museum website at www.ameliamuseum.org or call the Holiday Home Tour Line at (904) 254-0240.

John and Andrea Mateer are both artists and avid art collectors. Their home is decorated with a vast collection of art representing all art forms, including animation. Their collections include prints by Andy Warhol, Peter Max, and Joan Miro. Local artists are also featured, including William Maurer, James Draper, Serey Andree, Susie Sax, Sandra Baker Hinton, William Mauer, Pam Bennett, and Joe Winston. This not-to-be-missed townhome is located next to City Hall and showcases one of the newest additions to the vibrant Historic District. In contrast to the traditional historic homes usually offered on the museum’s annual Holiday Home Tour, those touring the Mateer home will see a well-planned home with all the modern amenities. The townhouse has 4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, and is a little over 3,247 square feet. A special feature is the rooftop terrace with views of the Historic District and Amelia River. The Mateer’s own art can be found throughout the house. John made the pendant lamps hanging over the kitchen island. As much a museum as home, the Mateer home is a unique stop on this year’s Holiday Home Tour. Decorator - Amber Marvin, Island Flower & Garden

RAFFLE The traditional raffle will include a variety of prizes such as a golf outing, original oil paintings, jewelry, Christmas wreaths, gift cards, and a toffee gift basket. Tickets can be purchased at the Scroggin house, 123 South 6th Street. You do not need to tour the house to 68 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

EATING SCENE

España RESTAURANT & TAPAS Serving distinctive, exceptional cuisine from Spain and Portugal, España offers the freshest seafood, steaks, paella, and tapas, in their cozy restaurant and lush garden. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY SHERRY CARTER

L

ast week, I moseyed through the ivy-covered arches into España’s courtyard on South 4th Street to write my final “Eating Scene” for the Islander. I was really excited to spend it with my very good friends Marina and Roberto Pestana, for whom owner involvement is not a result of modern industry necessity, but rather one of España’s secrets to success. They have been nurturing their vision into a thoughtful and inviting space for almost 20 years, raising their family, and supporting the community. Fernandina Beach is lucky to have them; our town and our tummies are better for it.

Meeting me after a hectic day of doctor appointments is miracle mom, business owner, and very dear friend Melisa Carrol. We were seated in the rear portion of the dining room overlooking a meticulously manicured courtyard, complete with flowing fountain. One thing is certain, there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Earlier that day, I had spoken to Roberto and he suggested a “tour de tapas.” As luck would have it, Melisa had never really explored the menu, so this would be an opportunity to slip outside of her comfort zone, if only for a little while. 70 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

We started off with Marcona Almonds, imported from Spain, seasoned and roasted and paired with glasses of Sangria. Then came an order of Cerdo y Higos, toasted bread topped with goat cheese, fig jam, Serrano Ham, and drizzled with a fig-and-balsamic glaze. After the opener we enjoyed one of my favorite nightly features at España: their house-made empanadas. Tonight’s offering featured whole roasted duck folded into their signature flaky crust and fried to golden perfection. Dishes like the Honduran-style Papusas, thick, soft corn tortillas filled with beans and pork cicherones, adopted from the experiences of his staff and the talents of Chef Manny Santiago, keep España’s menu vibrant. After a brief pause in the action, we were treated to a seafood sampler of fresh Escabeche de Pulpo, a special Grouper and Mango Escabeche, and Shrimp Ceviche. The difference between ceviche and escabeche are the preparation of the protein. With ceviche, the seafood is cured by its exposure to the acidic marinade, but in escabeche, the seafood is cooked and cooled ahead of the marinating process. Each is uniquely flavored and full of color, served with wings of Belgian-style endive. Before dinner began, I told Roberto I hadn’t eaten all day, which may have been taken as a challenge because he kept slinging food at us. After the refreshing seafood course came Shrimp Toast, a fritter of chopped shrimp fried and served atop toasted bread, drizzled with chili oil and aioli. Then grilled beef tips topped with brûléed gorgonzola, and finally, an eggplant roulade served in a roasted tomato coulis with melted cheese. Melisa pretty much tapped out at the Shrimp Toast, leaving enough to fill a to-go box for her hungry teenagers waiting at home. We finished the evening with a glass of 20-year Port and a slice of authentic Basque-style cheesecake. Burnt Basque cheesecake is a little lighter than New York-style cheesecake, with an airy texture more similar to soufflé but caramelized similar to a crème brûlée. España is open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday and should not be missed. Call for reservations.

f you ever received an orange in the toe of your Christmas stocking, you’re part of a Florida tradition that signifies the beginning of the citrus season in December. In the wintry north, oranges were considered an expensive commodity, and a gift to be treasured indeed. Today, over 90 percent of orange juice comes from Florida grown oranges, and that’s a good reason to enjoy them as part of your holiday celebrations in as many ways as you can! We love making orange marmalade at our house, using oranges right off the trees in our yard. We make at least a dozen pints or so and give them to our friends and neighbors as gifts. It’s a fun afternoon project, and one that the whole family can be part of. Another holiday orange recipe we

love is orange pound cake, made with fresh orange juice and zest. Our recipe is super-easy, using a yellow cake mix and vanilla instant pudding. These are also nice gifts, and you can make them in mini-loaf pans, if you wish. For a more savory offering, make an orangemarinated pork tenderloin with extra sauce, and you’ll have a decadent main dish for a holiday dinner party. Another good reason to support Florida citrus is that it has a positive impact on Florida’s environment. A modern grove design allows for large areas of undeveloped land, providing an excellent wildlife habitat and a natural buffer between farmlands and urban development. In addition, the citrus industry generates close to $1 billion in tax revenues, helping support schools, highways, and healthcare services!

Preparation Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 2 standard loaf pans. Mix all ingredients in a stand mixer and pour batter into pans. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until cakes are done. Cool and remove from pans. If you wish, make a glaze by mixing 1 cup powdered sugar with 2 Tbs. orange juice, and drizzle over the top. ORANGE MARINATED PORK TENDERLOIN Ingredients 1 cup orange juice 1/3 cup soy sauce 2 Tbs. chopped rosemary 3 tsp. minced garlic 2 pork tenderloins Preparation Make marinade by combining first 4 ingredients, then pour over the pork tenderloins and refrigerate overnight. When you’re ready to cook, drain the tenderloins, reserving the marinade. Roast pork in a 400-degree oven until done to your liking. While the pork is cooking, place marinade in a saucepan and simmer until it begins to thicken. Use this as a sauce for the meat.
