AMELIA DUEÑAS

VIRGINIA TECH

I believe architecture is more than just the design of buildings, it is a way of expression that can be sustainable and functional. As I grow in my career, I seek to foster communities through my designs that follow the relationship between people and space, creating a positive impact on the surrounding environments.

IAWA ARCHIVE

Located in Buenos Aires is an archival space for the international archive of women in architecture that focuses on presenting and holding Argentinian female architects’ work to bring recognition to the under represented. The architecture focuses on creating interesting spatial moments that enhance curiosity for one to explore. Its minimal design blends into the street wall while having these moments of pause that catch the eye.

Fall 2024 Semester Project

FLOOR

This project consists of three buildings ordered in this hierarchy that is relative to its publicity. The corner building holds outreach programs such as the gallery and auditorium. As it is placed on the ground plane and in the corner lot it is the most accessible to the people of Buenos Aires. The next building is the research center that holds study rooms, and offices. It is placed parallel to the street and it is elevated 15ft off the gr ound, slowly becoming less accessible and therefore more private. Lastly, the archive is placed in the back corner, farthest away from the street, and is elevated 22ft off the ground. The archive is a private and sacred place that isn’t easily accessible to the public and that is represented in the architecture

BUS STOP COFFEE SHOP

Located in downtown Blacksburg lies a bus stop coffee shop that emphasizes the relationship between temporary and permanent spaces through its purpose, materiality, and form. It is a connection between the street wall and Blacksburg culture through its historic brick facade and rectangular forms. It adds modernity through this weaving and light modular scaffolding system that acts as this connection and transitory space between the bus stop and the coffee shop..

Sping 2024

Group Project

2 Month Project

When starting with this project we began to look at the connections between a coffee shop and a bus stop, and how to create this relationship between the two but also allow them to speak separately. Looking at their purpose, a bus stop is a temporary space, and a coffee shop is a more permanent one. Representing these ideas we looked into hierarchy, materiality, and form. Periminancy is shown with a brick structure and temporary with scaffolding.

The coffee shop is placed in line with an alleyway that connects straight to the Blacksburg farmers market with the form simulating the alleyway. The bottom floor situates the coffee shop and the second floor acts as open seating leading to a balcony that spills out into the landscape.

CAMBRIA STATION

Located in Cambria, Virginia, lies a train station with a form that is minimal to bring a reminder to the historic existing train station, a monument of its time, and can continue to represent the surrounding area it resides in. The architecture focuses on creating these moments of pause that interact with the constant movement of people and the train allowing these programs to exist individually throughout the station platform

OBSERVATORY FOR THE BLIND

Located along the western lakeside of the Burkville Lodge in Virginia lies a new exploration into the sense of nature, straying away from the human reliance on sight. A new approach towards a nature observatory that is accessible to all and allows everyone to enjoy the beauty of their surroundings.

A full sensory experience throughout.

STUDIES

An exploration between looking at the expression of “lift” through a series of forms and experimenting with materiality. Looking at the in-between spaces made and how they exist.
