The beauty industry has a waste problem. This is not just regarding their packaging but the product itself despite an increased focus on sustainability. From warehouse waste to retail waste to consumer waste, makeup and hair care are continuously being thrown into the bin for either being close to expiry, out of trend products or even just unused and unwanted products into the bin. This is parochially due to many brands either bulk making or buying with no data to how much of their products is put to waste but also due to consumers habitual buying products. According to the website Brightly, “Zero Waste Week estimates that more than 120 billion pieces of packaging are produced globally every year by the cosmetics industry, contributing to the loss of 18 million arcs of forest annually.”

Yet, it is not just the producers who are causing this but also the buyers of the cosmetics as it is suggested that on average that a woman will own more than 40 beauty products but on average will only use up to 5 products a day.

On the other hand, due to both prisons being over populated and funds being limited, commissaries for the inmates do not have the facilities to waste products unlike outside of the prison. Beauty products especially are sparce within the walls of a prison as once the products are sold, it could be possible that they could not get any more in stock for months on end depending on the funds available. As a result, sexual favours, flirting and making eye contact with guards whilst showering could be used to gain contraband such as lip gloss, soap and tampons. According to an ex-prisoner, when she “turned down the guards (for sex) I was thrown in confinement or my stuff was torn apart, my pictures (of family) ripped up, sheets stepped on, contraband taken away.” They say that participating is not a choice.

DIY Make Up Due to both the limited selection of makeup and the little money inmates receive from their work, many women get creative and use anything they can get their hands on to create makeup including sharpies for eyeliner, Dorito colouring for lipstick and crushed up pencils mixed with baby powder and Vaseline to make eye shadow. Make up which is not sold in the commissary, is known as contraband. Some officers do not mind inmates getting creative with make up; some officers make it their mission to punish women who are seen walking around wearing makeup such as eye liner. The creation of makeup is not a recent contraband as women inside England’s Holloway Prison used to scrape off paint off their cells walls and use it as face powder and used wax paper melted was also used

to make the hair look shiny.It is known that majority of these beauty hacks are not safe, can cause serious damage and can be used to hide drugs from which is down to the commissary not selling enough products to choose from.

Jennifer Vollen-Katz, an executive director of the John Howard Association, states that “not giving people the opportunity to attend to their appearance is just another way of dehumanizing and making people feel as if they’re worthless.”

Model Prisoners In the state of Sao Paulo, Brazilian authorities host a beauty pageant once a year as research has shown it not only improves the inmate’s self-esteem but also encourages them to behave so they can take part in the contest. Within a four week time gap, women of all convictions including murder, fraud, drugs and trafficking can enter and convert one another into their dream pageant girl. The pageant is held within three prisons in Parajuli with a total population of 25000 inmates. Yet, out of the 25000 inmates, only ten can take part with the selection being based upon their behaviour records in prison. After the ten are chosen, the chosen few get the opportunity of having their make up and hair done as well as dressing up in two different outfits and having the rare opportunity of seeing family and friends again in the crowd. It has shown that this project has helped women to discover that they are more capable than having to rely on committing a crime; a chance to gain a sense of freedom and recapture their identity within a community. This project has shown that “if we’re going to hope that prisons are more than just temporary holding stalls for criminals bound to return there and are instead facilities that could foster change, then maybe it’s time we treated non-violent prisoners like people again.”

Veronica De Paiva, who won the Miss Talavera Bruce pageant in 2019, is currently in prison for drug trafficking. “I wanted to participate in the pageant because it is a chance that I can have to see my family and daughters, it has been too long already,” the inmate states. The pageant has given inmates the opportunity to dress up, wear makeup and gives the opportunity to see loved ones as a payback for their good behaviour. Veronica also states that she had “always tried to follow a modelling career, but my mother never agreed to that, but I intend to finish serving my sentence and get out of Brazil, to live in another country.” The pageant inspires inmates like Veronica to try and create a life outside of prison and get a job once she has served her time. Mayana Alves, who won the Miss Talavera Brice beauty pageant in 2017, is serving time for theft also stated that “walking the catwalk, I was nervous but happy at the same time. I just wish I had won my freedom as well and could sash with me out of here.” Once winning the pageant, prisoners will then go back to life in prison which could cause an increase in depression from having the freedom to it being taken away once again. Michelle Rangel also states that “during this moment, I don’t feel like I am in jail. My soul is freed.” This project in particular has helped generate new hope and confidence within the inmates as it gives them encouragement to have good behaviour so they can take part, be in the news and are able to see their family and friends in a different environment.

Prison Labour: China and America

In both America and China, there are clear mis usage of prison labour as all prisoners in the US have to have a job unless they are exempted mentally or physically. In prison, there are two types of jobs you can have including cleaning, maintenance and cooking or prisoners work for private companies within the Prison Industry Enhancement Program.

Yet as the world was hit by a pandemic, many states in America replied on prisoners making hand wash, sanitiser and wash contaminated laundry placing then at risk of catching Covid. This is however legal as prisoners are not protected, like the outside world, under the Fair Labour Standards Act so the prison can give them any work and still pay them under minimum wage even if the prisoner works overtime. Due to prisoners having to work a set number of hours a day, if a prisoner refuses to work that day they are instantly punished by either denied family and friend visits, parole or even being sent to solitary. “People constantly criticise clothing companies for using overseas sweatshops, but put that same awareness on prison labour happen-

Plastics in Prison Between the 1920’s and the mid 1990’s, in America, Canada and the UK over half a million inmates were given the opportunity to get free plastic surgery from the Government within the walls of the prison. During this time, there was a belief that prisoners who left feeling and looking more attractive would more likely be able to succeed at life and secure a good job. The plastic surgery was paid from the tax payers outside of the prison so the prisoners could access fully qualified plastic surgeons.

5 YEARS TIME...

As you walk into your local beauty retailer, as you walk past all the luxury expensive makeup, the numerous hair products and Christmas gifts, which are sat waiting to be chosen, you will spot a large, pink and blue box with many images of happy women from prison applying makeup on.

Located near the checkout, you cannot miss the box; sat with anticipation it stands with pride waiting to be filled with donations. However, the box cannot just rely on the generous customers to fill the box, but also the retailers who fill the box to the rim full of unwanted stock. With the weekly pick up drawing closer and closer, products sit waiting to be handed out and to be treated with love and joy by those in need. Now it is time for the pickup. The beauty products are radiating with joy as they are finally removed from the darkness of the box and placed into a large truck waiting for transit.

The truck finally stops and waits before finally being signalled into the guarded gats of the prison. The beauty products are vibrating with happiness as the metal door slams open and the winter ice air fills their packaging one by one being removed from the truck.

The prison is silent as the beauty products are snook into the commissary through the back gate with the sudden mumbles coming from the guards nearby. It is the end of the week and the beauty products have every hope with making the inmates feel satisfied giving them a sense of freedom.

The commissary is finally open and the prisoners spring to their feet to see what the latest beauty products they will be receiving this week. From new makeup brushes to new eye shadow pallets to a large range of shades of foundation, the inmates can finally have a way to express their emotions and can finally have a sense of freedom.

On the other hand due to COVID 19 pandemic, donations may me limited from customers and from the beauty retailers as there has been a decline in the economy and many high street stores may have to close once again if the R-rate continues to rise. This resulting in the prison not recieveing enough donations for the inmates making the system never improve.

FUTURE OF DONATIONS

10 YEARS LATER...

Ten years have passed, and there has been a dramatic rise in the women population in prison resulting in a large strain to be placed upon many prisons around the world. There are less and less job opportunities for prisoners resulting in an increase in mental illnesses and loneliness. However, the beauty retailers who are already supporting the prisons are now giving an opportunity for prisoners to review their newest products and giving them samples. With the review of the samples, inmates will not only receive new products twice a week, but also a small amount of money so they are able to prepare for when they get out of prison. From the newest mascara to the high-tech ice face masks, inmates will only be able to receive samples if they have had good behaviour throughout their sentence. As a result, there will be a decrease in prison while decreasing the strain on the prison. On the other hand, due to the rise in consumers demanding for more involvement, this could change in 10 years time as this job for the inmates could be delegated to the consumers who they will not have to pay over inmates being paid.

and research into chemicals in those products to adapt and innovate to create the next best beauty products in the careful watch of robot armed guards. Even though 10% of their revenue goes to the prison in order to give them the lab and the necessities they need to be educated, prisoners are able to save up their money to be able to spend it on the outside world to help their families in need.

Yet in 40 years time, this would depend on how many inmates have been on their best behaviour and whether the prison has connections with scientists and partnerships. This could be due to the backlash from Covid 19 or any other economic issue.

Future of Beauty Pageants

The year is 2027 and the population of the UK’s prison’s have projected to 98,700; the prisons are struggling more than ever. As a result, following the promising results from Brazil’s prison beauty pageants, UK women prisons have invested once a year in generating a life changing event in which women turn from criminals to cherished models Unlike any other day, there is a compelling sensation spreading throughout the prison; especially in the women’s facility. It is the 15th May 2027. The first year that any UK prisons are allowing such an event. Moving into the prison, the sound of loud rumbles, protruding from the hairdryers, echoing from the common room; followed by the happy shrieks from inmates. Today, is the day ten female inmates are able to compete within their prison for the crown of Miss British Convict 2027.

The common room, which once was a desert, is now full with makeup artists painting extravagant designs, hectic event planners running backwards and forwards between inmates and guards stood patiently like a camouflaged predator waiting for their next prey. To the corner of the room, is a neat arrangement of dresses, heels and bags lined up and labelled with an inmate’s name patiently waiting for their moment to shine. Their time is now.

Expect the unexpected. For the next eight hours the prison yard, which was once a war field, has magically turned into their very own London Fashion Week as family, friends and the British media flood around the empty white catwalk filled with anticipation. The bright white spotlights soon hit the stage followed by the girl power hit songs of Beyonce and Rihanna echo the prison ground. One by one, models dressed in bright, joyful yet glamorous and sophisticated clothing strut down the runway; waving to their loved ones with a beaming smile on their faces and posing for the cameras flashing on their arrival. Tears stream down the faces of family and friends, as they cheer the women down the stage. After the Catwalk, there are numerous stages in which the women face to gain the crown: Talent show, dress as future and a physical fitness test before stating why they would like to win with the rewarding reunion between family and friends. on the other hand, this could be affected due to Covid 19 regulations possibly still bein gin place for prisoners and visiting. If still in place, prisoners will not be able to congrigate in large groups nor let in loved ones to watch a contest to reduce the spread.

BEAUTY COMPETITION

It is the 20th anniversary of ‘Who wants to be a prisoner billionaire’ being held in Shanghai. A prisoner from every prison around the world is chosen to enter their products with the chance to be funded money for their beauty brand once they get out of prison as well as their own factory and workers.

Shanghai is bustling with excitement as the Shanghai stadium floods with virtual supporters and investors from around the world waiting for their next beauty investment from the next prisoner future billionaire. Behind the stage, prisoners are frantically preparing within their prison teams in order for their virtual presentations to flow perfectly. Each prisoner has to create not only a full line of plastic surgery advanced products which allows consumers to get their own robots to do it for them but also designing their own factory layout, logo and advertisement in which then the investors vote on. One by one, each inmate presents on the stage their final ideas on beauty innovation. Some prisoners fail instantly with the sudden echo of Booing as they are escorted off the stage and others succeed gaining a round of applause from the audience with beaming smiles on their faces.

Finally, is it time for the voting. One by one, the virtual investors have to send off a virtual email through their brain off to the automatic vote counting system. The prisoners sit on the stage in a line of chairs nervously, waiting for their name to be called out. If a prisoner’s name is called out, the prisoner is instantly placed back in chains and sent back to prison. Screams and cries echo the stadium as their dreams are suddenly snatched away from them one by one. The winner is then announced and the stadium fills with applause and cheering as their bank account fills with the billions of pounds on the screen.

On the otherhand, this event maybe affected due to the lack of technology advancement and societies veiws for giving a prisoner money as a reward for good behaviour.

The heat is radiating off the runway of Camp Nou Stadium waiting for the stadium to be filled full of fans from all around the world for this special event. Once every 2 years, a global prison beauty contest is held with the winners from the national contests. Slowly, one by one virtual fans pop up in seats around the stadium chattering away about the contest they are about to witness.

The smell of hotdogs and popcorn fills the air as they are cheering on each contestant throughout the rounds. One by one, each contestant struts down the large catwalk in the centre of the stadium with multi-coloured spotlights surrounding them.

Drones circle the catwalk as the models compete so it can be projected in every house.

Like any other voting system in 2147, fans are able to vote once within their brain for their favourite contestant which is then sent away and counted. Once counted, one by one the inmate losers are taken to the centre of the stadium where there is a medium sized circle with thousands of white spotlights on them. Suddenly, the circle spins around in circles generating static electricity. The fans gasp and cheer. Then, the circle electrocutes the prisoner killing them instantly. Losers gain instant death. Once the winner has been announced, the winner is instantly placed on a rocket and vanishes of the side of the world to never been seen again to start a new life on a new planet with the past winners.

On the other hand, this event may not take place due to possible laws regarding the death of prisoners and whether there will be enough prisons from around the world who are participating in the contest.

PRISON LAW 2042

20 YEARS LATER...

20 years later, and prisoners finally have a law made to protect themselves from being paid below minimum wage. Now, inmates are able to work within the prison making outsourced products for companies above minimum wage with no need for slave labour. With the commissary being free, this allows inmates to save their money for the future. There is an opportunity to exit the prison, inmates can work in factories and hair salons with the company of a guard from the prison. This law will allow prisoners to be able to choose what kind of job they would like to go into whilst in prison and gain many skills from their chosen industry of work.

The Teleporting Room

PRISON JOBS

40 YEARS LATER...

As you walk into the pitch black room, looking up to the ceiling you will be mesmerised by the teleporting purple and blue spiral which dimly lights up the room. The room is empty; no furniture, no guards and no inmates. It is quite and has the smell of nothingness. To the centre of the room, is a large white circle on the floor. “Step into the white circle” the voice booms through the speaker. As you step into the circle, a white electric light spirals around you protruding though the ceiling turning gold . A slight buzz fills the air as the light gains speed. Suddenly, you find yourself in a factory full of other inmates you recognise with a sewing machine and material in front of you. To the left of you is a running conveyer belt delivering the final clothing products to the check point at the other end of the room. You realise you can talk to other inmates as you are talking and realise you could get used to this experience. Looking behind, you notice yet another white circle. This white circle allows you to virtually travel back to the prison and back to your cell for a good night’s sleep. A good day’s work done.

On the other hand, will only occure in 40 years time if technology has advanced further enough and whether companies want inmates working for them instead of workers who are free.

Plastic Surgery Law

80 YEARS LATER...

There is a strong smell of antiseptic and bitter artificial undertones as you are being prepped to go in to surgery. Today is the day you will finally gain a new identity with your sentence date expiring. A new nose?

A face lift? A robot in the doctors’ room has just prepped your skin and changed your clothing. To the left, are shelves after shelves full of breast implants, noses, eyes, bum implants and hair sat waiting patiently waiting to be picked. After you have picked, the robot wheels you into the surgery room while another carries you chosen new features. You feel a sudden prick and are instantly out like a light.

The bright lights of the clinic blind you as you open your eyes. “Would you like to look in the mirror” states the doctor. Standing up with the help of the robots, you look in the mirror and you don’t recognise the woman staring back at you. As you step out of the room, a guard hands you a set of new clothing and states “here is your new passport, your birth certificate and a driver’s licence. Your new name is Veronica.”

The law now states that before you are released from prison, you have to have plastic surgery in order not to be recognised. This way, prisoners are able to create a new life, get a job and start again.

On the other hand, this will depend on who are in charge and their values. This will also depend on social media trends whether excentric features are the upcoming trend so inmates will blend in.

100 YEARS TIME...

In 100 years’, time once a prisoner goes to prison, they are there for life. With the population of prisons rapidly increasing, the only way to succeed this is to transfer inmates who have lived their sentence to a remote area within a dome with other past inmates. There, inmates are able to start a new life from the outside world without the worry of society being endangered. As a result, there will be a decrease in the crime rates and an increase in suicide rates. There will also be an increase in social isolation and an increase in crime within the prison communities. However, prisoners will be watched over by a group of robots which parole the dome at all times to try and prevent crime from occurring.

In order for the inmates to be able to see their families, there will be access to advanced hologram technology in which inmates are able to go and see their loved ones or even have a job outside of the prison community of the dome. The dome will be underwater. Physically, inmates will not be able to commit a crime as the holograms are instantly sent back to their communities and instantly will be on a hologram ban.

On the other hand, this could be affected if society accepts having ex prisoners as holograms in their day to day life and whether they will feel safe within their community.

THE DOME

This is the underwater dome for ex prisoners where they are allowed to live after prison. There will be no physcial contact with soicety unless it is a hologram. By living deep underwater, the prisoners cannot escape from the dome.

What will happen in the future?

In 5 years’, time, donations will be made from popular beauty retailers to female prisoners due to the lack of resources and lack of funds.

In 10 years’, time, beauty retailers will hire women prisoners to sample and test their newest products for money.

In 40 years’, time, women inmates will be able to access science labs in prison so they can create their own makeup range to sell to save up money for when they get out of prison In 5 years’, time, the UK replicate Brazil’s prison beauty pageant and create their own once a year in prison for women.

In 40 years’, time, each country will host their own national beauty contest to find the winner of Miss (countries name) Prison Queen 2047.

In 80 years’, time, a global prison beauty contest will be held for the winners of the national contest, which will be held in Shanghai. The winner will earn a billion pound if they win and the losers will go back to prison.

In 100 years’, time, the global event will be held at Camp Nou Stadium where the winner will be able to enter a rocket and fly to a new planet and live with the previous winners. However, the losers will be electrocuted.

In 20 years’, time, there will be a prison law in which protects prisoners from earning less than minimum wage.

In 40 years’, time, prisoners will be able to be teleported into a workplace so they can gain the skills they need for the outside world.

In 80 years’, time, there will be a law which states that a prisoner has to have plastic surgery and change their identity before they get out of prison.

In 100 years’, time, once a prisoner enters prison, they will no longer be able to physically be able to enter society again. Overall...

It is evident that women in prison are sometimes overlooked when it comes to their quality of life as prisons where originally designed to hold men. Unlike men, women need more necessities such as makeup, hygiene products, hair products and skin care which research has shown when given has decreased bad behaviour between prisoners. Especially within the law, both men and women inmates are overlooked and are currently being paid below minimum wage for jobs resulting in prison slavery. Evidently, it would approximately take a woman inmate three weeks to buy extra sanitary products from the commissary if ran out of the free products. However, one country in which priorities women inmates is Brazil. In Brazil, they hold once a year a beauty pageant within the prison for prisoners who have good behaviour. Research has shown, that there has been a decrease in crime within the prison in Brazil due to women being inspired to enter the competition.

Within the next 100 years, the women prison sector will adapt and innovate to increase women’s quality of life whilst serving their time. This will range from global prison beauty pageants to, beauty product donations to prisons from brands, a reappearance of plastic surgery in prison and the prison afterlife. Even though there will be an increase in prisoners entering prisons, prisons will not be strained due to the amount of support and regulations put into place in order for inmates to have good behaviour. In the next 100 years, women in prison will finally be a priority.

Yet, due to uncontrollable obsticals such as COVID 19, social media ,natural disasters and political agenders, this trend publication could be adapted and changed according to the forever changing world and its high demanding consumers. Therefore, this trend publication can be viable if is adapted to suit the demand and the current trends within society.
