WHITE SANDS PLACENCIA

Villa Style Resort

Located on Placencia Beach, Belize. The project utilizes local and sustainably sourced materials to help reduce the resorts’ carbon footprint.

This villa style resort is designed after traditional Mayan design principles. Mayan architecture was often designed to be oriented along a north-south axis to take advantage of solar and other celestial events. The structures

SCHEMATICS

The basic layout of the resort takes after the spatial orientation of a traditional Mayan city. The buildings are situated on a north-south axis to take advantage of the east-west sun path. The Mayans also took into account the hierarchy of each structure with their temple being the tallest point in the city while every other building followed at a lower elevation. In this case the lobby (central meeting point) of the resort is the highest point of the resort and in the center of the plan.

The essence of Shintoism is the devotion to invisible spiritual beings and powers called kami. They take the form of objects and concepts important to life and nature like rain, mountains, trees, and rivers,

ENLIGHTENED SPACE

Shintoism

Explore concept abstraction through methods of research, graphic representation, light/shadow, and form. This is a place for spiritual reflection using light as a primary design element. The space is based off of key components of the Shinto religion. This method helps effectively communicate the ideas held within the Shinto religion as a physical space. The space is designed for prayer and worhsip.

19 20 Enlightened Space

DESIGN PROCESS

A series of textile collages and digital watercolor paintings helps conceptualize a few major aspects of the Shinto religion. The main focus of the space, however, is the Shinto shrine. Though all Shinto shrines are unique in their own way, they all have a red Tori at the base of each shrine. Users are encouraged to walk through it to ward off negative spirits and energy before entering the shrine.

FIKA COFFEE BAR

Located in Union Station, Kansas City, MO, Fika Coffee Bar is a cafe that offers a wide range of spaces that experiment with the spatial potentials of Swedish weaving or “huck” embroidery and weaving. The space is a quaint and homely place for busy travelers to pause.

CONCEPT DESIGN

Fika Coffee Bar was designed to offer a wide range of spaces that will attract users as well as creating an open space that is inspired by traditional Swedish weaving patterns.

This booth system provides intimate seating for groups of 2-5 people. The shape is taken directly from the 3D pattern study and is configured in a way to save space as well

The use of darker ceilings and light colored walls make the space seem more wide open as well as relaxing. These natural materials transform the space into a spa-like feel. Both the rooms and hallway are lined with strip lights to make the ceilings appear taller. All of these elements together create a fully immersive, spa-like environment for the clinic that eliminates any stressed feelings.

This divider features a zig zag scren inspired by the geometric style of the weaving pattern. It helps organize the space and provides optimal privacy for users in the cafe if needed.

RENDERS

The material selection for the cafe is inspired by the Swedish weaving patterns as well. With the use of lighter stone textures contrasting with the darker wood finishings, it creates a pleasing and homely atmosphere for users. It highlights the scandinavian influence in the design as well. The cafe provides users with several different kinds of seating for any setting.

The space is designed for a 4 person family that includes someone suffering from depression. It is on a 25’ x 125’ lot and is located at 645 Sandusky Ave.

HEALING HAVEN

Smart Sustainable Home

Design a sustainable home for a city lot that also addresses a large social issue - depression. The home promotes environmental sustainability, social sustainability, and economic sustainability. This residence responds to its surrounding environment and its users by applying principles of sustainability and human factors. Public health crisis and economic conditions have changed needs in interior residential environments, more young adults are now living at home. While a single house will not address all these possibilities, we can change design solutions for many of these challenges.

40 39 Healing Haven

New technology and sustainability needs required designers to rethink traditional housing. An important first step in sustainability is location, city residents drive less, live in smaller footprints, and even require shorter utility hookups. Cities offer important social connections and diversity. Wyandotte County Kansas is one of two counties in the nation with no majority ethnic group, home to people from a wide range of ethnicities and nationalities.

DESIGN PROCESS

Using sloped ceilings helps more light filter in the space which is important for narrower houses.

Proper air ventilation also reduces serious mental health risks Good indoor air quality can be achieved by increasing air flow and using natural air.

The house surrounds a central atrium located in the middle. It also features multiple outdoor areas such as a front patio, atrium, front deck off the main bedroom, and a rooftop balcony for entertaining guests. These spaces let users have access to natural air and light during rough times. There is a main office as well for users working from home to have a separate space away

SECTIONS & ELEVATIONS

The central atrium lets in the majority of the light inside the house. The effect of sunlight influences a person’s well-being. Lack of natural light can trigger a person’s mental disorder (in this case, depression). The outdoor spaces in the house also allow for natural air ventilation. Operable windows create a sense of openness to the environment while ventilation allows fresh air flowing into indoor spaces.

It includes a skylight and a large back curtian wall. The atrium utilizes a curtain wall system that offers extra insulation and can be opened outward from the top. The rooftop balcony features two social spaces as well.

ART SKILLS

Drawing & Printmaking

A big reason why I wanted to pursue architecture is because I have always been drawn to depicting architecture in an artistic way. I was taught how to draw in perspective around the age of 12 and I have been practicing ever since. Not only did it encourage me to pursue architecture, but it gave me an outlet to apply my detail-oriented skills I specialize in (almost) all forms of printmaking and pen & ink drawings. Art classes I have taken in the past in high school include AP Studio Art, Advanced Printmaking, and Advanced Drawing
