Fifth Year cover letter
Dear Recruitment Manager,
Over the course of my studies at KU, I expanded my skills and chose my path within the field of Architecture. My top three fifth year options demonstrate my future interests and each use my talents in different ways.
Since I first transferred to KU, I knew I wanted to aim for Studio 804. The program offers a unique opportunity for me to work in my element while learning about the construction process. My passion lies in hands-on shop work; I have welding, metalworking, and woodworking experience. I took Keith’s third year design build studio, where I played a major role in designing the structural elements for the Prairie Park Pavilion. Coming from a previous design-build studio, I am familiar with the pacing, I am comfortable working with a team, and I believe I can bring several skills to the table. Studio 804 will challenge my skills and expand my knowledge of the construction phase. I hope to continue my passion for hands-on work in the future, and the addition of Studio 804 will show employers what I am truly passionate about.
My second choice, Sports and Recreation, provides me with a unique challenge. Sports venues are a wonderful example of how architecture can bring people together from all over the world. Large event venues have the potential to be multi-use public spaces that remain active throughout the day. However, sports venues leave a heavy footprint, due to the massive structural requirements and the amount of site space used for parking. My challenge would be to create a sustainable solution that allows the building to give back to the environment while still accommodating such a large audience. Additionally, this class would allow me to utilize my grasshopper skills by designing a dynamic parametric roof for the venue.
My third choice, Urban Design, aligns with my long-term goals for architecture. In the future, I aim to design multi-use public architecture that supports vertical expansion and sustainability over horizontal developments. This class would provide real-world practice for dense urban projects that align with my future goals.
Each of these fifth-year options utilize my skills while challenging my creativity and expanding on my knowledge for the future. While Studio 804 is my top choice due to its emphasis on hands-on construction, I am confident that any of these options will help me grow as an architect.
Sincerely,
Ashley Decker
