Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2021 at Elmwood Memorial Park with Jud Powell, officiating. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

Jenny and Claude moved to Abilene in 1960. She taught school in Abilene for 20 years and later became the owner and President of International Tour Travel for 17 years. She was a member and strong supporter of the Abilene Philharmonic for many years, a member of the Rotary Club and the First Baptist Church. She was very active in her church and a member of the First Baptist Choir. Jenny worked alongside with Claude in their dedication to children at the Hendrick Home for Children. Claude was the President and Jenny was the First Lady. Together, they expanded the home, as they served as a mother and father to many children who passed through the doors. They genuinely loved, influenced, and encouraged hundreds of lives. Claude was instrumental in giving away many daughters in their weddings as Jenny served as a counselor to these young ladies. Jenny was preceded in death by her parents and a twin brother, Joe Cargile. She is survived by two nephews, Joe Mark Cargile of Crosbyton, Texas and Michael Cargile of Girard, Texas. Serving as pallbearers will be Adam Cargile, Aric Cargile, Toby Covington, and Jason Weltzin. Honorary pallbearers will be Ross Cargile and Jared Cargile. Family suggests memorials may be made to Hardin-Simmons, Claude and Jenny Hicks Scholarship Fund.

Graveside services were held January 19, 2021 at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. Roy Mekasch officiating, Burial followed. Arrangements are under the direction of CateSpencer & Trent Funeral Home. Doris was born on August 16, 1931 in Weatherford, Texas to Charlie and Mary Elizabeth (Gilliam) Stults. She married William Adkins. She was a Baptist and member of Broadway Baptist Church in Sweetwater, Tx and then Harvest Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas. She worked as a switchboard operator for Southwestern Bell and Bank One for many years before retiring. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Stene and husband Michael of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, son, Kenneth Adkins and wife Pam of Abilene, Texas, four grandchildren, Kimberly Emslie, Dennis Stene, Christina Adkins, and Molly Adkins, and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Adkins, mother, Mary Elizabeth Purcell, father, Charlie Stults, step-father, James Purcell, and brother Wayne Purcell.

Felipe Rodriguez Hernandez 75 of Abilene, TX passed away Thursday, January 21st, 2021 at Hendrick Medical Center. Funeral Services will be held Friday January 29, 2021 at 11:30am with Deacon Victor Ramirez Officiating, with burial to follow at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5-7pm at the North’s Funeral Home Chapel. Felipe was born in Pearsall, Texas to Parents Genaro Hernandez Sr. and Trinidad Rodriguez. He received his primary education from Pearsall Public Schools graduating from Pearsall High School in 1963. After High School, Felipe joined the United States Air force and served honorably for four years and served in the Vietnam War. On November 4, 1969 Felipe married the love of his life Minerva, and the two spent 51 loving years together. Mr. and Mrs Hernandez moved to Seymour, TX and spent 18 years there until moving to Abilene in 2018. He loved to be outside working in the yard, listening to music but most of all he loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. Felipe was preceded in death by parents Genaro Hernandez Sr. and Trinidad Rodriguez, brothers; Crespin Hernandez, Raymundo Hernandez, and Pedro Hernandez. Left to cherish his memories are wife Minerva Hernandez of Abilene, Son Victor David Hernandez and wife Arceli of Munday, TX, daughters: Adrianna Hernandez of Abilene, Ana Laura Hernandez of Abilene, Aurora Ortega and husband Jesse of Abilene, 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family and many friends. 1. GET RECOMMENDATIONS - Two people sitting on a couch speaking with each other. Start with your friends and family and then check in with the National Association of the Remodeling Industry for a list of members in your area. You can also talk with a building inspector, who’ll know which home renovation contractors routinely meet code requirements, says This Old House general contractor Tom Silva, or pay a visit to your local lumberyard, which sees contractors regularly and knows which ones buy quality materials and pay their bills on time. 2. DO PHONE INTERVIEWS - Once you’ve assembled a list, make a quick call to each of your prospects and go through these questions to ask a contractor: 1) Do they take on projects of your size? 2) Are they willing to provide financial references, from suppliers or banks? 3) Can they give you a list of previous clients? 4) How many other projects would they have going at the same time? 5) How long have they worked with their subcontractors? The answers to these questions will reveal the company’s availability, reliability, how much attention they’ll be able to give your project and how smoothly the work will go. 3. MEET FACE TO FACE - Based on the phone interviews, pick three or four contractors to meet for estimates and further discussion. A contractor should be able to answer your questions satisfactorily and in a manner that puts you at ease. Tom says that it’s crucial that you two communicate well because this person will be in your home for hours at a time. On the other hand, don’t let personality fool you. Check in with your state’s consumer protection agency and your local Better Business Bureau before you hire a contractor to make sure they don’t have a history of disputes with clients or subcontractors. 4. INVESTIGATE THE FACTS - Now that you’ve narrowed your list, put your research to use. Call up former clients to find how their project went and ask to see the finished product. But Tom says you shouldn’t rely on results alone. Even more important, visit a current job site and see for yourself how the contractor works. Is the job site neat and safe? Are workers courteous and careful with the homeowner’s property? 5. MAKE PLANS, GET BIDS - You have your short list of contractors whose track records seem clean and whose work ethic looks responsible. Now it’s time to stop looking back at past work and start looking forward to your project. A conscientious contractor will want not only a complete set of blueprints but also a sense of what homeowners want out of a project and what they plan to spend. To compare bids, ask everyone to break down the cost of materials, labor, profit margins and other expenses. Generally materials account for 40 percent of the total cost; the rest covers overhead and the typical profit margin, which is 15 to 20 percent. 6. SET A PAYMENT SCHEDULE - Another important tip for hiring a contractor is to workout a payment schedule ahead of time. Payment schedules can speak to a contractor’s financial status and work ethic. If they want half the bid up front, they may have financial problems or be worried that you won’t pay the rest after you’ve seen the work. For large projects, a schedule usually starts with 10 percent at contract signing, three payments of 25 percent evenly spaced over the duration of the project and a check for the final 15 percent when you feel every item on the punch list has been completed.

Beyond technical competence, comfort should play an equal or greater role in your decision. The single most important factor in choosing a contractor is how well you and he communicate. All things being equal, it’s better to spend more and get someone you’re comfortable with when hiring a contractor. 8. PUT IT IN WRITING - Draw up a contract that details every step of the project: payment schedule; proof of liability insurance and worker’s compensation payments; a start date and projected completion date; specific materials and products to be used; and a requirement that the contractor obtain lien releases (which protect you if he doesn’t pay his bills) from all subcontractors and suppliers. Insisting on a clear contract isn’t about mistrust, Tom assures us. It’s about insuring a successful renovation.

Kathy Marie DeAnda Jones passed away peacefully and in the Lord’s timing on January 23, 2021, at her home in Abilene, Texas. The prayers of many were felt during her 2 ½ year battle with cancer. Service will be 2:00 pm Friday February 5, 2021 at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene.

She shared a rich love with her high school sweetheart, Dempsey Jones, whom she met 40 years ago; they were married for 36 years. Kathy graduated from Abilene High School, class of 1983, where she and Dempsey played in the high school marching band together. Their life of service included years as a military family, as well as in ministry. Beginning in 2007, Kathy worked at Texas State School in Abilene. She was wellloved by her boss and co-workers who supported her as closely as family. Kathy was always thinking of others and she was an excellent cook. Her dishes were enjoyed by all at birthdays, holidays, and special events. She remained faithful and was strong in her faith. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Even during her cancer treatments, she was a light to others also battling the disease and many new friends looked forward to her visits alongside them. She brought happiness to every gathering with a smile and personality that we will cherish and never forget. Kathy has completed the race the Lord had for her and we will miss her very much. She is survived by her husband, Dempsey Jones of Abilene, Texas; Son, Dempsey Jones Jr., and his fiancé, Chelsea; grandson, Hollis of Austin, Texas; Brother, Danny DeAnda of Abilene, Texas; Brother, Joe DeAnda, and his wife Karen of Loveland, Colorado; and brother, John DeAnda, and his wife Kristy of Windsor, Colorado. Step father in law, Zack Greer, of Potosi, Texas; Brother and sister in law, Randy and Cindy Moetteli, of Dallas, Texas; Sister in law, Bobbie Jones, of Abilene, Texas; Brother and sister in law, Bill and Valerie Plaster, of Dallas, Texas; Brother and sister in law, Michael and Maggie Brennan, of Abilene, Texas; Brother and sister in law, Lynn and Judy McVey of Potosi, Texas and many Nephew & Nieces. She is preceded in death by her father, Joe DeAnda Sr.; Mother, Connie DeAnda; and son, “Baby James” Jones; Father in law, Bobby Jones; Mother in law, Dorothy Greer; and grandmother, Effie Jones. Kathy, and her infectious laughter of pure joy, is now in the glorious presence of the LORD and her loved ones. Revelation 21:4 (NLT) “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain.
