Kyle Whittingham Currently in his ninth year as head coach of the University of Utah’s football team, Kyle Whittingham has an over all record of 71-32, including seven bowl victories. He was the 2008 National Coach of the Year and is 2-0 in BCS bowl games.

Photo courtesy of University of Utah

Coach Whittingham is known for developing NFL players and Utah was the third-most represented team in the 2013 Super Bowl with four former players: Baltimore’s Paul Kruger, Ma’ake Kemoeatu, David Reed and San Francisco’s Alex Smith. Needless to say, Coach Whitt, as fans call him, has become a household name among Utes and the PAC 12. What do you love most about Utah?

I love everything about Utah. Being able to ski in the winter, boat in the summer, and experience all four seasons are things that I really enjoy.

What are your favorite places to eat at downtown?

There are so many great restaurants in Salt Lake City, so it’s hard to single out just one. I will say that Mexican cuisine is a favorite of mine, and there are three or four places in town that I really like to go to.

What is your favorite place to go watch sports?

I would have to say that Rice-Eccles Stadium is my obvious favorite. I also enjoy watching sporting events and concerts at Energy Solutions Arena.

What are you most excited for this fall?

I’m excited to get the football season underway, as you might expect. We were disappointed with last season, and we are looking to improve this year. Football season has always been my favorite time of year.

IN Magazine | October 2013

What do you love most about coaching at the University of Utah?

Without a doubt, working with the players and seeing their growth and development during their time in our program is the most satisfying part of my job.

What’s your favorite date night?

I really don’t have much time for going out except for during the month of July. We like to get away as much as possible during that time and really enjoy Lake Powell and Hawaii.

What’s the best team to play at home, and what’s the best team to play away? Playing in the Pac-12 is challenging every week. There really is no one favorite place to play or favorite team to have come to our stadium.

Where is your favorite place to go celebrate with the team? By far the favorite place for our team to celebrate is in the locker room after a hard-fought victory!

Utah’s Fall Leaves

It’s time for an extra dosage of fall before winter blows in with a fury. Whether you’re trying to squeeze in one more adventure or just squeezing out every last drop of the season, check out the places below to get the most out of your Utah fall. EMIGRATION CANyON Fall is one of the best times to explore one of Utah’s most historical canyons. From the wagon trains to Pony express riders and modern-day cyclists, there’s a reason emigration canyon is— and has always been—the place. “the fall always helps me remember what a special place emigration canyon really is,” says rick raile, emigration canyon community council’s chair and acct representative. raile knows how he likes his fall days in Emigration Canyon: filled with taste and color. His ideal fall day might begin with a scrumptious breakfast with his wife or a hike in the canyon with his dog Hummer. “I think both of those scenarios would probably send you into sensory overload,” says raile. It’s that sensory overload that makes fall raile’s favorite season. “My only wish is that it would last longer,” he says.

MILL CREEk Margo Provost, owner of Log Haven restaurant, shares raile’s love of fall. “Fall is my favorite time of year in this canyon,” she says. tucked within the twists and turns of Mill Creek Canyon, you can find all the hiking, biking, and picnicking you could hope for before snow hits, and Provost knows how to make the most of it. “Hike the canyon, gather some colorful leaves,

Entertainment and stop in at Log Haven for dinner and a craft beer afterward,” she suggests. Log Haven spends the month gearing up to celebrate the end of October in style. “Haunted Log Haven is an annual tradition where we invite our guests to dress in costume and join us for three days of spooky cocktails, eerie treats, and complimentary tarot readings,” says Provost. FISH LAkE Mill creek canyon might be around the corner, but if you need to slip outside of your everyday life for a bit, consider

a trip to Fish Lake National Forest for a cool and calming adventure. Fish Lake resorts reservationist beth anderson enjoys her time there. “It’s just a good place to be in the fall,” she says. at a little over three hours southwest of Salt Lake city, Fish Lake National Forest offers a contemplative atmosphere with all sorts of outdoor activities still available. anderson mentions hiking and fishing as great activities, but she truly gets excited when she describes the lake. “the lake is pretty glassy,” she says. “a lot of the time, you can see the trees reflected in the lake.” If that’s not enough to convince you to visit, Fish Lake has a few other tricks

up its sleeve. One word: Pando. Keep in mind that as you hike through the quaking aspens that make up part of the national forest you’re also hiking through the Pando aspen clone. these aspens share the same root system and the same set of genes, making it one of the largest living organisms in the world. Whether you’re in the mood to escape the daily beat or need an adventure right around the corner, you’re in luck. Utah is the perfect place to get your fall fix before winter hits, giving everyone an opportunity to savor every moment of the season until it’s done.

Odyssey Dance Theatre’s Thriller

The only thing to fear, is missing this show. In most places, if someone told you they saw werewolves step-dancing and a dozen Chuckies prancing with knives, you might assume they had too much Nyquil before bed. But in Utah, this means Halloween is approaching and Odyssey Dance Theatre is showcasing their spooky and celebrated annual production of “Thriller.” Odyssey Dance Theatre’s “Thriller” is Halloween’s answer to the “Nutcracker,” but instead of dolls that come to life, the undead roam the stage with dance moves to impress the most stoic zombie. Although the production opens with it’s namesake, Michael Jackson’s original song, “Thriller,” that is just a starting point. “Thriller is just the beginning of the show. The rest of the show is a series of vignettes of all of your favorite Halloween characters,” says Odyssey’s Founder and Artistic Director, Derryl Yeager. This year Odyssey will be performing “Thriller” over 47 times at seven locations state-wide due to it’s overwhelming popularity. Albeit its present notoriety, the first run of the ghoulish dance production, which debuted over 15 years ago, almost

got the chopping block before it had a chance to manifest its macabre head. “A couple of days before the show, the guy from Kingsbury Hall called me and said, ‘you’ve only sold about 50 tickets to this thing, maybe you should cancel it,’” says Yeager. “But I knew what we were doing in the studio was something different, it was something special.” By the fourth run of the show, “Thriller” had sell-out performances. Though the number of attendees has changed, much of the core of the show has not. Yeager says about three fourths of the pieces in the show today are the original pieces created for “Thriller” 15 years ago. “Those pieces just have the staying power, that really speaks to the pieces themselves,” says Yeager. “But at the same time, the show has developed and grown over the years and every year I try to do something a little different and have a couple of little twists.” One of those “little twists” this year is the addition of a video contests where three to four submitted entries will be incorporated into the production and the audience will have the opportunity to vote for their

favorite one. Other new elements to look for this year include a Dracula-oriented piece performed by “So You Think You Can Dance” finalists, Ryan and Ashleigh Di Lello, and a robots-gone-bad number featuring LED light technology developed by Brigham Young University. “It’s just amazing stuff,” Yeager says of the robot number. “The lights are very highly choreographed to what they are dancing, and the piece as a whole.” As the growing popularity of the production can attest, “Thriller” is not just for dance junkies and Halloween fanatics. “One of the things that makes the show really shine and one of the reasons why people like to come back to it is because of the sick Halloween humor in it,” says Yeager. According to Yeager, the show often has the audience in hysterics, not because it is absurdly frightening, but because it’s absolutely funny. Odyssey Dance Theatre’s production of “Thriller” runs from Sept. 27 – Nov. 2 throughout Utah. Visit http://odysseydance.com/ for more information and to purchase tickets. While the show does have scary elements, the only thing to truly fear is missing the chance to see “Thriller.” Buy tickets soon before they sell out.

Pago

Every season is delicious here

I

f you’ve given any attention to the local food scene in Utah in the last few years, you know about Pago. Walking in the 9th and 9th neighborhood staple, I wondered if there was anything to be said about Pago that hasn’t been said by every other writer darkening its doors for a review. It seems like every food writer is a fan and every Pago regular is an evangelist for what’s on the plate or wine list, who’s in the kitchen and/or the aesthetic of it all. It satisfies on so many levels. Sitting down for dinner, our server explained that Pago’s menu changes weekly and most certainly seasonally. Intrigued by the mention of carrots on a lot of the

Pago

menu items, we tried the starter that was exclusively carrots and cleverly named “carrot”. The server said he likes to call it “carrots five ways”. It sounded a little too high-concept to say, here’s a plate of carrots done a lot of different ways. But it worked beautifully and looked the same. The different expressions of the dish complimented nicely and the presentation was Instagram-worthy. Alongside the Utah lamb, came a wonderfully seasoned pea falafel, chermoula, carrots, cucumbers and a house yogurt. The presentation matched the flavors showing a lot of nice color, especially after cutting the falafel open. The dark exterior up against the bold dark green matched the flavor nicely. It’s a menu item that knocks on the door of fall nicely. Pago is like a great album. No matter how many times you listen to Plans by Death Cab for Cutie, it remains great. No matter how many times you wait for a table at Pago, stare at the menu, talk with Evan Lewandowski about the wine list or order Courtney McDowell’s desserts,

the quality and depth of Pago stands. And, like a great album, you can simply enjoy it for what it is, great food, or you can scrutinize every piece of it and find nuance worth celebrating. For all the fans of chain restaurants where one can have the same dish summer, fall, winter or spring, try Pago. Why? A lot of restaurants try to accomplish what Pago has done. It’s created a following of fiercely devoted fans who simply trust the restaurant. No matter what’s on the menu or beverage list, these fans will order it and probably like it. Season restaurants can frustrate the creatures of habit. For you, the Pago burger is always on the menu with varying seasonal accoutrements. With lesser quality burgers, I order my burgers medium or medium-well. When the server told me Pago sources beef from

Road Tripping: Skull Valley Cemeteries

Instead of the usual corn maze or pumpkin patch, this year might we suggest a day trip, or more appropriately in this case, a night trip through Skull Valley to discover the long-forgotten cemeteries nestled inside and around this appropriately named region. type these coordinates into your phone’s gPS and follow where the lady tells you to go for a creepy Halloween adventure. TO SkULL VALLEy:

From Salt Lake city take I-80 West for about an hour, get off on exit 77 and turn left on the 196. this will take you all the way through Skull Valley. Follow the sharp turn onto the 199. It takes you out of the valley and leads you to some old mining towns. Follow the road signs and you should be just fine. IOSEPA Coordinates: N 40° 33.286’ W 112° 44.289’ From the “aloha Iosepa” sign at the turn off, to the sea turtle marking the entrance to the Iosepa cemetery, the Polynesian culture is apparent in this Utah ghost town. Utah ghost towns are divided into mining towns and Mormon towns, and this is a Mormon town through and through. Polynesian converts arrived in Utah in the mid 1800s to get temple married and were eventually sent to settle the land of Iosepa and work for the church’s agriculture business. Nearly impossible conditions plagued them for 28 years,

leaving many graves. Most of the living inhabitants returned to the Hawaiian Islands once a temple was built there. those who died still lie today in the only place that really still exists from that time: the cemetery. the history of Iosepa is well documented by several signs and placards. Most of the graves in Iosepa are only differentiated by a cement barrier and then covered by rocks. Some have cement headstones, but most are bare. In the center stands a cast-iron fence surrounding two graves. One has a headstone with an inscription naming the person and their birth and death dates—a rare feature here. Spookiness Rating: 3/10 OPHIR Coordinates: N 40° 22.122’ W 112° 15.518’ Ophir smacks you in the face with it’s mining roots. Spookiness Rating: 5/10 MERCUR Coordinates: N 40° 18.372’ W 112° 15.551’ Mercur is another boomtown made ghost town. If you want to see more of Mercur than the cemetery, don’t bother trying—there is a large fence keeping away visitors. the american barrick resources corporation owns the area now. the last of the ore has only recently been mined, and they are still working to instill the natural growth. the Mercur cemetery is a bit more of a hike than the other two. You’ll be rewarded at the top by a wooden placard that reads, “Mercur cemetery.” Most of the graves are surrounded by their very own white picket fence, but any inscription on the headstones have all but worn away. Many of the graves are decorated with flowers and even some christmas garland. One of the graves had a fresh-looking doll dressed in pink straddling the fence—an alarming sight for anyone who’s seen chucky. Spookiness Rating: 7/10 Many Utah towns were promptly abandoned once the ore and coal dried up, leaving behind ghost towns galore. So pack a flask of whiskey and head west. Discover where the people of the Skull Valley area still lie today.
