verybody has that friend who encourages you to do something crazy. Utah native and Nitro Circus founder Gregg Godfrey is just like that friend—except he’s built you a ramp and has sold tickets to witness the spectacular (and sometimes messy) result. Oh, and he’s got next. For years, Godfrey has made Utah the launch pad for the world-renowned stunt team based in Bluffdale that he describes as “just a bunch of good ol’ boys from Utah trying to make it work.” Gregg is joined in his exploits by seven of his blood relatives, a host of talented daredevil friends, and motocross prodigy Travis Pastrana. Together they’ve sent cars, dirt bikes, big wheels, even semi-tractor trailers soaring through the air. When wheeled vehicles start to seem too conventional, they don’t hesitate to simply launch their bodies sky high as well. The Nitro Circus began as something new for Godfrey after a career racing motorcycles and working in the film industry. Watching them do their thing in the Nitro Circus films and their television program on MTV2, now in its third season, is a mix of intense concern, unadulterated shock and awe, and sheer disbelief. But that’s nothing compared to catching the action in person. “There’s no better way than live,” says Godfrey. “You can hear a band on the radio that you like, but it’s a whole different experience at a concert.” But it’s hardly a fair comparison because even at the best concert, you’re not likely to be staring up 50 feet in the air above you as the performers backflip to a backdrop of fireworks and flames. And you’re in luck, Utah, because the circus is coming to town January 17 after a massively successful world tour. When I caught up with Godfrey, he had just returned from shows in Moscow and St. Petersburg to sold-out audiences. “They’re great,” he said of the Russian crowds. “They’ve never
8
seen anything like it, so you can do anything and they just consume it.” He knows American audiences expect even more; that’s why the latest program has been four years in the making. “When everybody in that stadium, all 12,000 people, are focused on one moment,” he says, “that’s when you know you’re succeeding.” And when Godfrey and the gang come home to Salt Lake City, they pull out all the stops. “We plan to blow it out in Utah,” he says. Despite being slowed down a bit by a broken pelvis last year, Godfrey hasn’t ruled out personally giving hometown fans something special. “Gotta do it for the hometown, right?” he says. Still a Draper resident, Gregg loves our state because it’s an active place. Where else can you be 20 minutes from skiing/snowboarding, dirt biking, and wakeboarding? Nitro Circus fans from Utah will no doubt recognize many of the set pieces as they watch the show. It’s also home to a favorite Godfrey New Year’s Eve tradition—a no-holds-barred fireworks war. Were you expecting a quiet night at home watching the ball drop in Times Square? Think again. The clan amasses an impressive stockpile of explosives over the year and then unleashes them on each other with the same reckless abandon with which they

perform their stunts. But safety first— goggles are required. See? Safe. His life philosophy? “If you’d have asked me 10 years ago, I would have said ‘Hold it wide open,’” Godfrey says. “But now I think it’s just, ‘Be passionate every day about what you do.’” That kind of attitude is something anyone out west can relate to, and it’s how Gregg Godfrey embodies the wild spirit of Utah with his desire to live life to its fullest and to let nothing stand in his way.

BALLET WEST CELEBRATES 50 YEARS! This season, in its 50th anniversary year, Ballet West stands as one of America’s premier dance companies. Its dancers have
performed on some of the most prestigious stages throughout the nation and the world. Its renowned academy teaches classes aimed at a variety of ages and abilities, from the very young to the pre-professional student. Through the years, hundreds have passed through the academy’s portals, and its graduates have used their training to influence dance in every corner of the nation. In addition, Ballet West’s education and outreach programs reach more than 100,000 Utah students, teachers, and special needs individuals each year. But more than a performing arts organization, Ballet West creates jobs, stimulates the local economy, and attracts entertainment-minded tourists from around the country. Last year, its Nutcracker performance drew patrons from 48 different states. Indeed, Ballet West has become an important piece of Utah’s rich cultural tapestry.
Ballet West Presents Annual Holiday Production of The Nutcracker in Newly Renovated Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre. Ballet West continues its 50th anniversary in grand style with its annual holiday tradition of The Nutcracker, the first production to grace the stage in the newly renovated Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre, 50 West 200 South, Salt Lake City. Choreographed by Ballet West founder Willam Christensen, The Nutcracker will run for 25 matinee and evening performances from December 6 through December 30. Evening performances begin at 7 p.m., with matinees at 2 p.m. There is a special holiday matinee on Christmas Eve at noon. On December 30 at 7 p.m., Ballet West will present the “Nutty” Nutcracker. This year’s theme salutes reality television and features the same choreography with fun flourishes and whimsical surprises. The Nutcracker will also be performed in Ogden on Friday, November 29, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, November 30, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Val A. Browning Center, 3750 Harrison Blvd. on the Weber State University campus. Based on the fairy tale by E.T.A. Hoffmann and set to the favorite score by Tchaikovsky, The Nutcracker is a classic ballet in two acts. The story tells of a Christmas party at which little Clara, daughter of the house, receives the gift of a nutcracker from her mysterious uncle, Herr Drosselmeyer. After the party, she falls asleep and dreams of snow castles, sugarplums, and her nutcracker, which has turned into a handsome prince. Launched last year by the Downtown Alliance, the Jingle Bus, decorated in full holiday regalia, complete with caroling – either recorded or perhaps by a more talented random rider – connects City Creek Center to The Gateway, Temple Square and Capitol Theatre. From 5pm-10pm, seven days a week, the Jingle Bus makes a continuous loop for shoppers, families sightseeing downtown and 20-somethings on a pub crawl. The Jingle Bus begins free service Black Friday and runs through New Year’s Eve. The Jingle Bus is one of those rare examples of serving a purpose, while being an experience unto itself. At its heart, it is a way to connect Point A to Point B in downtown Salt Lake City. Sure, TRAX works for the same purpose of providing transportation for free in the downtown area,but riding the Jingle Bus provides a unique experience along the way. Riders have boarded the Jingle Bus to hop across town, only to find themselves on their third or fourth “lap”. You meet fun people, chat about which store has the best window display, swap tales of great gift deals and partake in the random Christmas carol. That likely won’t happen on TRAX – though I’ve been part of some group chanting after a big Jazz win on the way home from ESA. alt Lake is becoming more and more of a food destination. Chefs like Matthew Lake from Alamexo are bringing big city–worthy restaurants to our neighborhoods. Alamexo opened its doors in the heart of downtown Salt Lake offering up Mexican food dishes that would be loved in any metropolitan area.

When we sat down at Alamexo, we started with their tableside guacamole. What is tableside guacamole? Well, it is just that, guacamole made fresh (tableside) and seasoned exactly to your liking from mild to spicy. This is a must order, in my opinion, when you’re visiting Alamexo. We suggest it alongside the house margarita made with local Vida Tequila, topped with lime and a hibiscus flower. As we sipped our drinks and nibbled on chips and guac, I got to ask Chef Lake a little about his background in Mexican food.
20 years old. He worked alongside the famous Mark Miller in Washington DC at Red Sage (which, while he worked there, won Best Restaurant of the Year in Esquire magazine). He remembers lines of folks wrapping around the restaurant exterior after the restaurant received its award. At this young age, Miller saw potential in Lake and mentored him in cooking and recipe development. But Lake’s relationship with good Mexican food didn’t end there. He eventually worked at Rosa Mexicano (a James Beard Award–winning restaurant) in New York, getting to learn from Josephina Howard, one of the most acclaimed Mexican food chefs of our time. When Lake moved to Salt Lake City, he began his food journey at Zy, then decided to go back to his roots and provide Salt Lake with some of the expertise and flavors that he had picked up in fine Mexican food over the years.

corn is a big deal. Why? Because Lake was taught by those who know true Mexican cooking, and he will continue to teach and cook in the fashion he learned. (The blackened corn side dish with chili, lime and cotija, is one that tastes perfected.) The side dish of corn isn’t the only dish we couldn’t stop eating. The Mole Poblano was truly sublime, with complex flavors in the sauce and pork that was tender and rich in flavor. The tacos are served in a warm cast iron skillet with all the best garnishes and warm tortillas. Even the small elements were satisfying, like crispy, warm plantains adorning the side of the taco plate,
toasted rice with garlic and pepitas, smooth and slightly spicy refried beans, and the salsa of the day always intrigues. Every detail seems perfected at Alamexo—even the tortillas. Matt went out of his way to taste every tortilla he could find in the valley, landing on a local tortilla made in West Valley. High quality Mexican food and a humble chef who still works the line on any given day is what you’ll find at Alamexo. Start with the guacamole and a margarita, end with some tres leches, and everything in between will taste just as flawless as the dish before.

n recent years, we have seen a rise in popularity for certain pop culture holiday icons such as the Elf on the Shelf and the increasing popularity of all things “ugly sweater.” Ugly sweaters, best described as awkward holiday apparel, have become the subject of seasonal parties and office contests everywhere. Cities such as Denver, Las Vegas, and Chicago host annual 5k runs dedicated to the theme. Pinterest offers page after page of pins and boards for idea shopping and endless entertainment. Books have been written containing tips and tricks for throwing the perfect party hosting ugly sweaters as the guests of honor. There is even an app for you to endlessly design the perfect tacky creation and then do it again. All of these items making the case that, to many, nothing says holiday cheer like warm seasonal apparel adorned with yarn, appliqué, sequins, and the like! Should you have an occasion to don one of these bright spectacles, and in place of raiding your mother’s closet on the pretense of borrowing a sweater to look festive, there are a few places that have become known for their selection of “ugly” offerings to those looking to take home the title at any party.
