• Ask permission to take photos. In this age of social media and digital phones, it’s tempting to snap a photo of anything that interests you. Please ask the builder or Realtor working the home for permission first. And remember that floor plans and unique home layouts can present a copyright concern.

• Admission is free to most homes: Register to tour the free homes through the mobile app or Parade website, www.paradefm.com.

• Wear socks and remove your shoes when you tour Parade entries. Some homes may provide shoe covers.

• $5 to tour all luxurious featured homes: Purchase tickets through the mobile app or Parade website.

• Bring your children, but keep them close! Many homes are beautifully staged with fragile décor. Please leave pets at home.

• Free parking is available on city streets. Please obey parking laws. Do not park in the driveways of Parade homes or block driveways of occupied homes.

Incentives In Fargo and West Fargo, you can save up to $4,000 on your property tax bill when you buy a newly built home. Home owners get an exemption on up to $150,000 off their property valuation for two taxable years following the year the home was sold. In Dilworth and Moorhead, you can get a two-year property tax rebate on newly built homes. On a $250,000 home, this is a value of $5,500 over the two-year period. There is no maximum value on new construction of single-family homes, including the building and land. Of course, there are many small communities surrounding the F-M metro area. The Spring Parade of Homes offers a glimpse at houses showcasing style, upscale amenities and some custom surprises their owners have specially requested. This year’s five featured homes have it all waiting for you to take a step into the luxurious life! Featured homes must be priced at $750,000 or more and be a firsttime entry on the Parade. The cost is $5 to tour all five homes. Since 2003, the Parade of Homes’ luxurious featured homes have

raised just over $156,000 for Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation, the HBA of F-M’s charity that supports scholarships and projects related to housing like Habitat for Humanity and construction of handicap-accessible ramps. Four HBA of F-M members have volunteered five entries for this year’s event. Here is a sneak peek at the homes and just a few of their fantastic features.

Visitors will be inspired by the restored and reclaimed products built into this beautifully designed home. For instance, the brick wall in the dining room and basement bar was reclaimed from the Historic Lewis Home in Fargo, built in 1899. Builder Ben Anderson says, “The Lewis Home was frequented by historic figures, including the owner himself, as well as politicians like Teddy Roosevelt. The bricks were all custom cut and installed with non-tooled grout to

resemble a structural wall from the early 1900s.” Anderson also highlights the adorable kids’ spaces that include a secret room and a creative loft with a custom block-and-tackle shipladder. Student Pursues Career as Electrician After Academy

David Ebens went from a graduating senior who was unsure about what to do next, to a graduate with a solid plan. Like Ebens, many students approaching high school graduation still have up-in-the-air future career plans. But they do know they don’t want to be stuck behind a desk. The Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades is a two-week experience for youth 15 years old and up to learn through applied exercises about the construction industry. Students work side-by-side with industry and education professionals, learning about occupations, tools, safety requirements and skills required for satisfying and wellpaying careers. Ebens attended the 2017 Herdina Academy and was

offered a job at New Horizons Electric, Inc., in Fargo, N.D. where he has been working since late summer/early fall. Ebens explained that he has always been an outdoorsy person, and wanted a career where he could work on a job site. Once the Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades’ activities started rolling, Ebens noticed what he really enjoyed: working with roofing and electrical. “I had taken some construction classes in high school, but this was different because we were able to work with the contractors themselves and learn how they do things in real life, versus having someone else tell us,” he says. “It was an inside look at how they do things in their own companies. I would definitely recommend it to other students.”
