It was a “featured home” on the 2014 Spring Parade of Homes to raise money for Home Builders Care Foundation. Clay Dietrich owns Dietrich Homes, Inc., with his son, Tom. Their company provides custom home-building services to the F-M and lakes area. Clay has over 35 years of experience in the construction industry. Learn more at www.dietrichhomes.com. Clay was given the Home Builders Association of F-M’s 2015 Builder of the Year award. This award is presented each fall to recognize one outstanding Builder member for effort and work expended in the

interest of his or her fellow members, Association and community. Serving as HBA of F-M president in 2015, Clay first became active over 20 years ago to enter a model home in the Parade of Homes. He has served six years on the board of directors, has been involved in several HBA committees and task force groups and serves on boards for both the North Dakota Association of Builders and National Association of Home Builders. Clay received the Builders Association of Minnesota’s President’s Award in 2014 which is the highest honor that a non-member can receive from the Association. He received the North Dakota Association of Builders’ Builder of the Year award in 2015. ince 2003, the Home Builders Association of FargoMoorhead’s Spring Parade of Homes has included luxurious “featured homes” that raise funds for Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation. Over the years, these homes have raised nearly $125,000 for Home Builders Care which is the HBA of F-M’s charity that supports scholarships and projects related to housing like Habitat for Humanity and construction of

handicap-accessible ramps. Featured homes must be priced $750,000 or more and must be a first-time entry on the Parade. The cost is $5 to tour all three homes on this year’s Spring Parade. Three HBA of F-M members have volunteered their entries for this year’s event. Here is a sneak peek at the homes and just a few of their fantastic features:

Dietrich Homes, Inc. | $1,395,000 3710 6th St E, West Fargo • Shadow Creek

Dietrich Homes’ stunning “contemporary cottage” entry has many fantastic features. Its welcoming, pub-style bar in the lower level invites you to pull up a stool and stay awhile. Upstairs, you’ll find a gourmet kitchen with professional Wolf / Sub-Zero appliances and a four-seasons porch with a stone fireplace located off the dining area. Be aware of copyright laws when developing home plans

opyright infringement can happen unknowingly, in subtle ways. For instance, a couple may walk through a house during

the Parade of Homes and love the way it looks and feels. Later, at their kitchen table, they sketch the layout on paper and decide to take the next step, ultimately working with a contractor different than the one who originally built the Parade house. Is this copyright infringement? Probably. It is the consumer’s responsibility to be forthcoming about his or her plan’s origins, just as the builder should ask questions about the drawing. But if the couple says nothing and the builder takes the sketch as original, everyone involved has just entered into a bad situation. Some may ask, “How many changes do I have to make in someone else’s work before it becomes my own design and I am no longer in danger of being sued for copyright infringement?” According to National Association of Home Builders Legal Research Department the answer is simple:

You are not entitled to create derivative works from another’s copyrighted plans, drawings or buildings without permission. The copyright law does not permit usage of the design after a certain amount of changes has been made to another’s copyrighted work. Prior to December 1, 1990, architectural structures (buildings) could not be copyrighted. Only architectural drawings received copyright protection. An amendment to the Copyright Act changed that situation. Now, any qualifying building constructed after December 1, 1990, is automatically copyrighted to the person or company who “authored” the drawing or plan – for example, a builder, architect or lumberyard. Before using any floorplan that you have seen on paper or experienced by touring a home (even a friend’s home), be certain to find out its origins. Ten Quick Tips for Choosing a Contractor USE THESE TIPS TO SELECT A PROFESSIONAL YOU CAN TRUST WITH YOUR FUTURE.

1. Always check to see if the

contractor you are considering, local or transient, is licensed in the state in which work will be performed. Contact the appropriate governmental agency: North Dakota Secretary of State’s office at (701) 328-3665 or the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry at (651) 284-5034 or (651) 284-5069 to verify the builder is currently licensed and to find out if he or she has a disciplinary history. The status of a contractor’s license can also be verified by using www.nd.gov/sos/ licensing or www.dli.mn.gov/ccld/ rbc.asp.

2. Get more than one estimate

Home Builders Care will work with Homes For Our Troops this year to build a home for a veteran of the armed services in Moorhead. Homes For Our Troops is a privately funded nonprofit organization building specially adapted, mortgage-free homes nationwide for the most severely injured veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of these veterans have sustained injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, and/or severe traumatic brain injury. The Fish Fry is an annual event started by the Fargo Motor Patrol in 1963. Since 2013, Home Builders Care has partnered with the Motor Patrol to organize and promote the event. The 53rd Annual Fish Fry in 2016 was

Today, our Red River Valley Home & Garden Show welcomes over 300 exhibitors at the Fargodome and offers workshops for consumers throughout the event. • At the turn of the century, the HBA began a Fall offering of its popular Parade of Homes
