The other border At America’s northern border, Canada feels further away than ever

The Slash” is the northern border’s version of “The Wall.” But where a wall creates a barricade, the Slash creates an opening.

The name feels a bit like an onomatopoeia, describing the 20-foot-wide, 1,349-milelong clear-cut of spruce and fir trees that tower over the lakes and blanket the mountainsides of a land so big and untamed it doesn’t feel like it could belong to anyone.

The U.S. and Canada officially agreed on the co-management of the Slash when the International Boundary Commission was created in 1925, but the razing of trees to mark the 49th parallel began in the 1800s, to simply let the “average person” know that they are “on” the agreed-upon border. Today, the U.S. and Canada are each responsible for funding the maintenance of 10 feet (or 3 meters) of their respective sides of the Slash’s center line. That requires a $1.6 million annual budget for the U.S. to cut back any encroaching wilderness and maintain the cameras that surveil more remote stretches of the Slash. The U.S. government’s half of that bill costs each taxpayer between a half-cent and a penny every year. But at this moment, what’s crossing the border — and what’s not — is coming at a much higher price.

While this region has a violent colonial history and the establishment of the United States and Canada bifurcated Indigenous nations and ecosystems along the 49th parallel, the world’s longest international border — 5,525 miles with 120 land ports of entry — has been considered peaceful for more than 100 years since the signing of the border treaty of 1908. Personal, political and economic relationships have been not only peaceful, but truly friendly and prosperous. The trade relationship between the two nations is one of the biggest in the world, with Canada and the United States both serving as each other’s largest export markets.

However, after President Donald Trump referred to Canada as “the 51st state” and announced a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods, a trade war has broken out. Canada responded immediately with its own retaliatory tariffs. Since then, Canada and the U.S. have been flinging counter-tariffs back and forth on goods such as lumber, dairy, steel, aluminum and electricity.

It’s a fraught moment that feels upside down, with the southern border between the U.S. and Mexico being quieter than usual while tension in the north flares.

The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol reports that 500,000 fewer Canadians crossed the border in February 2025 than in 2024 and new data shows that passenger bookings on Canada-U.S. airline routes are down by more than 70 percent every month through September, compared to the same period last year.

Both Canadians and Americans living in border towns are trying to maintain a sense of normalcy, but some are beginning to question if top-down politics has the power to shake the foundations of what makes this region unique and peaceful. Many wonder what will remain, and what won’t, in the aftermath.

A casual affair

“Tell ya what, up here’s about as close to heaven as you can get,” says Lester “Bud” Gray, a rancher born and raised on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. At a cafe on the reservation in northwest Montana, just 12 miles south of the Canadian border, Gray started his morning with some coffee and a casual three-hour cribbage session with his two friends, Pat Schildt and Stormy Burns, before heading back out to care for his cattle.

“But wait ’til the wind comes, then it’s

hell,” he laughs. After a couple of games, the conversation shifts from the winter duties of feeding livestock to politics. The three men shake their heads at recent federal employee layoffs and the chaos of international relations and executive orders that have flooded the news lately.

Schildt, who has been constantly cracking jokes while consistently losing in cribbage, switches his tone. “People are going to pay with their lives, their livelihoods.”

He runs a domesticated herd of bison on land with a whole handful of borders that also delineate his property line: The Blackfeet Indian Reservation, Canada, the United States, Montana and Glacier County.

He says that his bison once busted through the fence and made their way into Canada, only to later find them huddled along the fenceline elsewhere waiting to be let back in. In addition to his bison crossing every so often, he says that many people’s lives and

businesses are naturally integrated on each side of the border. His mechanic is north of the border, and it’s not uncommon for his neighbors to buy animal feed from each other or get groceries on the opposite side of where they live.

Human-made things also snake above and below ground across the border. While the population thins out along the northern border of the United States, most Canadians — 2 out of 3 — live within 62 miles of their southern border. Pipelines, reservoirs, electric transmission lines and industrial goods — nearly $2.6 billion worth of stuff — cross the border each day, according to the U.S. Department of State. The trade war has thrown all of these goods, and relationships, into a tailspin. For example, Ontario Premier Doug Ford slapped a 25 percent surcharge on electricity Canada supplies to Michigan, New York and Minnesota in March. It has since paused, but Ford says

DESERET NEWS | JUNE 2025 he is not afraid to “increase this charge” or “turn off electricity completely” if the U.S. escalates tariffs.

But up here (or down there, depending on who you are talking to), there is some immunity to human drama. It’s easy to imagine that more animals — as big as grizzlies and as small as ants — cross the border each day than people. The landscape is vast, and while far from empty, it’s hard not to feel a sense of awe and appreciation for it.

As you get closer to the Piegan Port of Entry border, bison dot the landscape on both sides of the highway (Schildt’s herd is on the east side). Chief Mountain, a sacred place for the Blackfeet, juts up from the plains into sheer walls of 600-million-yearold rock piled atop formations that are at least 400 million years younger. Set against the backdrop of the mountain, the drab government buildings and sleepy border crossing feel extremely insignificant.

Silly, really. The Rocky Mountains strut north and only a slight shift in their name indicates any difference in their national identity becoming the “Canadian Rockies” as they cross the border into Waterton Lakes National Park.

For the average American or Canadian citizen, crossing the border is generally a casual affair. There is even an outdoor barbecue at one of the nearby crossings — a friend told me of a time a border agent had him wait a moment while he went to flip the chicken he was grilling.

Pulling up to the Piegan Port of Entry, a young border agent asks the same questions as always. “Where are you going? For how long? Do you have tobacco, alcohol or firearms?” In less than one minute, speed limit signs swap from miles to kilometers per hour, the road that was once Highway 89 is now Highway 2, and the U.S. is in the rearview mirror.

The first town north of the border on Highway 2 is Cardston, which was settled in 1887 by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints traveling from Utah. A young man on a very tall horse trots down a road just a few blocks off the historic main street. Shayde Primrose, a senior in high school, wears a black cowboy hat and is easy to talk to. “I don’t pay much attention to what’s going on down south,” he says, “but my mom sure does, and she doesn’t like any of it much.” In addition to being a student, Primrose is a horse trainer. A woman has hired him to train this particular horse for racing. The horse’s name is Donald.

Search for the right balance

At a coffee shop in Blairmore, Alberta, a group of locals huddled together at a table, discussing the recent news of a family of Venezuelans trying to cross the border from Montana into Alberta on a night that was a bone-chilling minus 22 degrees. “How did they get all the way up here?” one man asks. Canadians are not used to people attempting to cross the border from the

U.S. However, numbers have increased both ways in the past few years. First, Trump accused Canada of not being harsh enough on illegal crossings into America.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says 23,721 people were apprehended last fiscal year crossing its northern border, up from the 2,238 caught two years prior. That is a marked increase, but still nowhere near the 1.5 million apprehensions U.S. border agents made at the southern border last year. In response, Canada enacted stricter visa policies and added two helicopters and a fleet of thermal-detecting drones to their border security, and data shows that there are fewer attempted illegal crossings from north to south this year than at the same time last year.

However, as sweeping deportations have come into effect across the States, asylum-seekers are reportedly fleeing north, attempting to make it out of the U.S. and into Canada to avoid being deported.

While data has not been released for 2025, government news releases suggest the number of these asylum-seekers escaping into Canada is rising. In Alberta, preliminary data shows that up to 20 people have been apprehended crossing illegally so far this year. In comparison, only seven people were intercepted crossing the border illegally in Alberta in all of 2024.

And while illegal border crossings seem to be rising, the official border crossings, where Americans and Canadians drive through every day to shop, eat, visit family, or even just go hiking or skiing, are eerily quiet. According to U.S Customs and Border Protection data, nearly 500,000 fewer travelers crossed the border from Canada into the U.S. in February 2025 than in February 2024.

“It’s unsettling,” says a woman working at the Duty Free shop on the Canadian side of the border at the Rooseville crossing.

Normally, after work on a day like today, she tells me she often drives to Eureka, Montana, to buy groceries, since it’s much closer than driving to Fernie, British Columbia. But this morning, her friend went to buy a few groceries and received a 25 percent tax on them when she came back over the border. “It just no longer makes sense,” she sighs.

But the fact is, folks have to keep making life make sense up here. And so, amid the cafe-stop lunches and the drives to the nearest market, they find ways. At a coffee shop in Fernie, a blonde woman wearing a beanie sitting next to me can’t help but notice that her 6-month-old baby and mine are about the same age, so we strike up a conversation. In between swapping stories about sleep deprivation and starting solid foods, she mentions that her husband is American and they go back and forth often.

I ask her if they are worried about the politics of it all. “My husband isn’t, but I am,” she says. “Honestly, it creeps me out.

Just under the surface of even the most pleasant interaction or expression is a feeling of deep concern and uncertainty.

It’s difficult to navigate when overarching political tensions and contentment within our daily lives are constantly battling. It’s a practice of searching (but never actually finding) the right balance.

When U.S. and Canada connect

The Slash is not always easy to find — often far away from any roads or trails.

Turning off the main highway, up a dirt road still packed with ice, I leave the car behind and walk through spruce and ponderosa.

Then, suddenly, there’s an opening. Walking into the middle of the clear-cut, the line looks like it reaches out in both directions forever, only pausing to hop across the blue waters of Lake Koocanusa before picking back up and rising into the next mountain range across the valley. Lake Koocanusa’s name is a blend of “Kootenai” (one of the names of the Indigenous nation whose traditional homelands it is in), “Canada” and “USA,” but the word “Koocanusa” sounds nothing like any of those root names when you say it aloud.

Standing here, I remember reading about

something President Ronald Reagan said in 1988, after signing a free-trade pact with America’s neighbor on the northern border: “Let it forever be not a point of division but a meeting place between our great and true friends.”

There are different ways to define this place we’re at, and to think about this “slash.” Perhaps, in the etymology of the word, this name wasn’t just meant to invoke the image of a slash that cuts two countries apart, like a sword slicing through the forest and national identity, but also a slash — a symbol of “either/or.” Of an indication that things are related enough to be separated by only the most marginal of lines.

The outcome of the trade war is still unclear, but Trump’s threats of future tariffs and the challenge to long-standing agreements hang in the air. What is clear is that, right now, trust in the U.S. as a reliable ally and “true friend” is in question.

The breeze is erratic and blustery as another storm hovers above. The sun is setting. The trees on the edge of the Slash sway back and forth, alternately leaning toward and away from each other. It smells of fresh earth and evergreen. In the negative space between the two countries, it becomes easier to feel what connects us.

What the newly built Syracuse Utah Temple’s 2 baptistries will mean for youth The Church invited members of the media to tour the Syracuse temple, a ‘house of hope,’ and learn about its significance

SYRACUSE, Utah — Among the unique sights in the newly constructed Syracuse Utah Temple — beyond the New Zealand wool rugs and motifs of indigenous plants in the art-glass windows — is what rarely any temples have: two baptistries.

“That’s all a matter of how many youth are in the area,” said Elder Kevin R. Duncan at the temple’s May 7 media day. “And in this area, we have a really high number of youth, and we will for a very long time because of the demographics. And if there’s one part of a temple that’s really busy all the time, it’s the baptistry, it’s the area where the youth go. So

this is intended to lighten that load off of some of the other temples.”

Elder Duncan, a General Authority Seventy and executive director of the Church’s Temple Department, was joined by Sister Kristin M. Yee, second counselor in the Relief Society general presidency, to show members of the media around the Syracuse temple and answer questions about its significance.

Said Sister Yee: “I know that [the Lord] has great things in store for this generation. And the house of the Lord will be a key part in that preparation for His coming.”

Invited guests will tour the house of the Lord on May 8-9, and a public open house will be held May 10-31. The Syracuse temple will later be dedicated in a single session on Sunday, June 8.

‘House of hope’

Elder Duncan grew up less than a mile and a half north of the temple site, and his great-grandfather was the first bishop of the Syracuse Ward.

“Can you imagine the joy he’s feeling, having worked the earth here, and here’s where the house of the Lord is?” said Elder Duncan. “We’re connected in our hearts with our ancestors and with our posterity, and I think he’s joyful for them, for us.”

One reason the Church builds more temples is not just accessibility by distance but also accessibility by time. “The Layton temple is not that far away, but it’s hard to get an appointment to worship there.” He added the Syracuse temple will likely see youth from

The temple is a “place of peace” and a “house of hope,” said Elder Duncan. “Ultimately, this journey through life is to return home to our Heavenly Father. Everything in the temple that we do is designed to help us to do just that, through our Savior, Jesus Christ.”

The Lord’s work carried forward

Sister Yee said the Syracuse temple will be a personal place of worship for those who enter its doors. “I am grateful to be here with you here today to witness the Lord carry forth His work.”

Through the temple, “we will continue to watch His hand roll forth across the earth to

She testified that God really does have a plan for these latter days, something she has come to recognize more as she sees the strength of the youth, their testimonies, and their desires to follow Him and be in His house.

Heavenly Father desires to bless His children, she said, “to help them to have the strength, power and peace and protection they need to be able to have joy in this life and to return home to our heavenly home.”

Feeling Heavenly Father’s love

Rebeca Gaburel — a 17-year-old from the West Point 15th Ward in Clinton, Utah — is grateful to live just 10 minutes from the Syracuse temple. “I can feel my Heavenly Father’s love so much in this place.”

She continued: “To be able to come here whenever I feel the need to be closer to my Heavenly Father is absolutely amazing. He has given us so many blessings in our life, and I’m so grateful that I get to appreciate this particular blessing even more.”

Through temple attendance, said Gaburel, “you feel happier, everything seems easier, and you feel like you can rely more on your Heavenly Father. And I think that’s something really special that I appreciate a lot from our Heavenly Father.”

Gaburel is eager to see the Syracuse temple bring her community together and closer to Heavenly Father’s love.

‘I’m closer to my Savior’

Eighteen-year-old Parker Lambert — from the Fox Hollow Ward in Clearfield, Utah — said the hardest thing about attending the temple is finding an appointment. Even early in the morning, youth gather in local temples to perform proxy baptisms for their ancestors before school.

“This temple is going to open up so much accessibility for youth to be able to go do baptisms here, and I think that’s such a beautiful, exciting thing,” he said.

When Lambert attends the temple, he finds greater focus on what matters and more motivation throughout his day. “On days that I go to the temple, I’m focused on Jesus Christ, and everything changes because of that.”

Despite a busy high school schedule and preparing to serve a mission in Denmark, Lambert has learned that being intentional about attending the house of the Lord blesses him in everything he does. “I’m more focused, I’m happier and it’s easier to make good decisions. And that’s because I’m closer to my Savior from attending the temple.”

‘There’s so much love’

Seventeen-year-old Kennedy Hadley from Syracuse acknowledged the diligence in local youth and what their temple attendance can mean for this new house of the Lord.

“There’s already been a lot of faith shown by the youth in this community and in this

area,” she said. “Hopefully it encourages the younger generations and the new youth to come, and hopefully they feel welcome and more encouraged to come to the temple.”

And more than blessing just the youth, “this temple is going to bring the community together. It stands as a beacon to heaven, a

symbol of God and Christ and how much they love us to put a temple in our own city.”

A temple visit changes the rest of Hadley’s day for the better. The opportunity to experience this more in her life is a testament of God’s love for her. “I know that there’s so much love that’s gone into this temple.”

In 2002, Crockett was a 230-pound “couch potato” in the midst of a midlife crisis. He couldn’t get down on the ground to play with his kids. He lagged behind his buddies on their annual backpacking trip. Running a mile or two for a couple of weeks to prepare for the trip didn’t help much, so he decided to try something different.

Instead, he hiked Mount Timpanogos, a 14-mile roundtrip with 4,800 feet of elevation gain. It took 10 1/2 hours. That younger hikers made fun of his tortoise pace didn’t sit well.

After the backpacking trip, he forced himself to hike Timp again. He was stunned that he cut his time in half.

“That started my fitness wake-up call,” Crockett said.

For the next two years, he was into fast-pace hiking. During an internet search for a hiking club, he stumbled across ultrarunning. He’d never heard of the sport. “I thought it was just a bunch of crazy people that were running on pavement up in the mountains,” he said. “I was partially right. They were crazy people but they run on trails.”

He entered a couple of 50K races, finishing dead last in one.

He entered a 100K race and the 100-mile Bear 100 in 2004, finishing neither. He limped away discouraged and in over his head.

After healing from some overuse injuries, though, he learned how to train and lose weight. He turned himself into a runner rather than a hiker. In 2005, he finished two 100-milers, including the Bear 100. And he was hooked.

the Moab 25 and the Cocodona 250. Races usually take place on unpaved trails and roads and go up and down mountains.

I’m going to meet Davy Crockett — that’s his real name — on a trail at the north end of Utah Lake. It’s not the wild frontier, but he is the king in these parts. He’s the ultrarunning man.

He has run 109 100-mile races. He is the 15th person in the world to finish 100 races at that distance. He is the foremost historian of his sport in the U.S. How he has time to pause for an interview is beyond me. I throw my running shoes in the car.

Turns out Crockett isn’t Forrest Gump crisscrossing the country nonstop, though he does have a (virtual) following.

At age 66 and coming off two knee replacements, he only runs when he gets the urge. Even when he trained more vigorously, he ran just two or three times a week on a mileage base built up over 20 years. He doesn’t have to run as often to stay fit, as long as he runs or hikes far — like 25 to 30 miles far.

This day is not one of those days. He has a 100-plus-mile bike ride planned for the next day. I don’t need running shoes after all. We walk and talk under a clear blue sky as the water laps against the path and frogs croak in the marsh.

So what exactly is an ultramarathon? It’s a footrace that’s longer than a traditional 26.2-mile marathon. Typical distances include 50K (31 miles), 100K (62 miles), 50 miles and 100 miles.

And there are also some insanely longer endurance races like

Are you crazy?

People ask Crockett, who is retired from a career in IT and lives in Saratoga Springs, all kinds of questions when they learn he runs 100-mile races: Do you sleep? Does it hurt? Are you crazy? And, of course, why?

“You run 100 miles, that’s kind of beyond people’s understanding because so many people think the marathon distance is really the limit to human endurance. But all that is just some silly magic number. Certainly you can go further,” he told me, wearing a rust-colored shirt bearing the logo of the Pony Express ultramarathon he started in 2006.

Yes, ultrarunners get drowsy. (Crockett sometimes sings ’70s tunes out loud to keep himself awake.) Yes, it does hurt at times. (But he got to the point where he could recover in three days.) Yes, you have to be a little bit crazy. (He almost entered the grueling and secretive Barkley Marathons but “sanity came upon me.”)

And the why comes down to the proverbial answer for climbing a mountain.

“There’s never really a good answer as to why,” said Crockett, a soft-spoken man not known to trumpet his accomplishments but who possesses a dry wit. “It’s kind of

For a stretch, he was running 10 to 12 100-milers a year, often fueled by Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and bacon. He has tailed off in recent years. He finished his 109th at that distance last year in the aptly named Dreadmill 100 — a competitive virtual 100-mile race on a treadmill — something he has done five times. He once broke his hand so badly in a fall during a race that it required surgery. But he finished.

100-milers and placed high in many others. His times range from about 19 hours to 36 hours, depending on the course and terrain. He didn’t finish about 20. He also got into fixed-time racing, an event where the winner is the person who runs the furthest. He won a 48-hour race, totaling 187 miles. He’s always recognizable on a course at night because he’s the only racer with a green light.

Long races often leave room for shenanigans.

Ultrarunner Phil Lowry said Crockett always went out too fast at the start of a race but Lowry would quickly catch him.

At the Wasatch 100 one time, he said Crockett hid behind a tree — “I don’t know whether he was frustrated or whether he was just in a mood that day” — and jumped out and “scared the crap out of me.”

“That started a yearslong, not a feud, but it was a line of practical jokes,” said Lowry, who lives in Issaquah, Washington.

Crockett did his best to not let his obsession overtake his family life during the peak of his running career. As a married father of six with a full-time job and service in his church, he already had a packed schedule. He arose very early in the morning on weekdays, sometimes going up and down Timp before catching the bus to work. On Saturdays, he got up at 2 a.m. and was home by noon. He found solace running in the peaceful darkness before dawn.

He came up with a way, though, to keep families involved in a sport that doesn’t lend itself to spectating. Sitting around for hours waiting for a runner to come past or reach a checkpoint isn’t too exciting. He requires runners in his Pony Express races to have a vehicle crew, typically made up of family members.

There was a time where running defined him, but that’s not the case now that he has slowed with age. His influence, though, still permeates the sport.

Forget a marathon

Craig Lloyd met Crockett in the most serendipitous way. In 2003, he hiked Utah’s three highest peaks — Kings, South Kings and Gilbert — in one day, a feat dubbed the “triple crown” in a Deseret News article.

Six years later, as Lloyd set out to hike Kings Peak again, he saw a “crazy guy named Davy Crockett” had written in the trailhead registry that he had run the “triple crown” for his 50th birthday two days earlier.

Intrigued, Lloyd stalked Crockett on the internet and found his blog, where he had cited the 2003 Deseret News story and mentioned Lloyd by name. Lloyd messaged Crockett, who promptly invited him on a run. Lloyd wasn’t a runner at the time but had started training with plans to run a marathon. Crockett told him to forget a marathon and do an ultramarathon, reasoning if he could do 26 miles, he could do 31 or 50K. They ran around Lake Mountain in Utah County.

“He remained a good friend and running mentor for me ever since,” said Lloyd, who has now run 17 100-milers and numerous ultramarathons. “My running career is very much tied to him and his influence.”

Among the lessons he learned from Crockett is the level of commitment it takes to be good at what is inherently a selfish sport. Running takes time from family and work but teaches resilience and stick-to-it-iveness that most people don’t know they have inside of them, he said.

Crockett also taught him that no matter how tired or beaten down you are in a race, if you stop and take a break, you’ll feel better and be able to finish.

“I’ve applied that more often in my life than I have even in running,” Lloyd, 52, said.

Going solo

Though Crockett devoted years to racing, his real passion is solo adventure running.

“When I would drive down I-15, my eyes would always be gazing up at the ridges, plotting in my head. I think I could run that ridge. It looks kind of flat up at the top; there’s probably a road up there or something. So, I would invent these different 50-milers,” Crockett said.

Rather than going to the top, he found a way to run around Mount Timpanogos or Mountain Nebo or the San Pitch Mountains without ever scouting them in advance. Some of them were more than 50 miles, some less, but all self-supported.

“It’s nature. It’s discovering new places,” he said, trying to explain the why.

Some routes he didn’t have to invent, like running the Grand Canyon rim to rim to rim, a 48-mile trip with about 10,000 feet of elevation gain. He did it so many times that he put in about 1,000 miles in that canyon alone.

Lowry has done what he prefers to call the Grand Canyon double cross (same as rim to rim to rim) 31 times, but he’s most impressed with Crockett’s 100-miler in and around the canyon.

“He’s been all over that canyon. He’s the only person I know who knows the canyon better than I do,” he said of Crockett, who has

written a book about Grand Canyon running.

And that Mount Timpanogos hike that first got Crockett off the couch? He once went up and down it six times in a row over about 30 hours. His fastest time top to bottom is a shade over three hours.

Crockett used to record his annual mileage but stopped a few years ago when the cumulative total hit 41,450. He figures he’s up to about 50,000 now. That’s equivalent to running around the circumference of Earth two times or running across the U.S. 17 times.

Mileage might be the one thing he doesn’t keep track of anymore.

Perhaps there can’t be a story written about a man named Davy Crockett without talking about his name. I ask him about it as we reach the end of the trail along the lake.

He recently went on the “Miles with Marty” podcast, focused mostly on ultrarunning. The episode is titled, “Davy Crockett, the runner, not the ‘the king of the wild frontier.’”

Lyrics from the old song “The Ballad of Davy Crockett,” where that phrase comes from, might even be applicable: “Off through the woods

he’s marchin’ along, Makin’ up yarns and singin’ a song” or “From grassy plains to the mountain crest, He’s ahead of us all meetin’ the test, Followin’ his legend into the west.”

Growing up, Crockett was Davy and later Dave or David. But he embraced Davy Crockett when he started running.

“I wore a coonskin hat at a race and I discovered people knew who I was,” he said.

“So I decided as a marketing ploy to start using Davy Crockett.”

And a legend was born.

Ultra writing man

Crockett is a prolific blogger. You can find out more about him than you ever wanted to at Davy Crockett’s Running Frontier blog. The tagline is “I Like to Run Insanely Long & Crazy Distances.” Nearly every one of his thousands of miles is documented, and that’s only a slight exaggeration. He writes about his adventures in great detail. The high and lows, the sad and sweet, the funny and scary, the do’s and don’ts.

It’s all there.

A longtime history buff, he has hosted the “Ultrarunning History” podcast since 2018, totaling more than 170 episodes and 4 million downloads to date. He has converted 13 of those podcasts into books. The one about the Grand Canyon is his bestseller. There’s no one in the United States more knowledgeable about ultrarunning history than Crockett.

Most people think ultrarunning started in the 1970s, but he traces it back to the 1880s, when long-distance runners were called “pedestrians.” An event at Madison Square Garden, which opened in 1879, featured runners doing laps around the arena for six days while thousands of spectators bet on them like they were race horses. A lot of money exchanged hands, Crockett said.

He oversees the American Ultrarunning Hall of Fame, established by the American Running Association in 1990 but dissolved in 2020.

After consulting with others in the sport, he inducts two runners a year. It has 26 members.

Crockett isn’t one of them. Asked about his own induction, he said “never,” ticking off the accomplishments of those in the hall. “The bar is high,” he said.

Lowry, who serves as legal counsel for Crockett’s “Ultrarunning History,” said he and Crockett have a “friendly argument” about whether a verified solo run under 48 hours should be counted as a career 100-miler. Lowry said it should because technology today allows easy verification. Crockett associates it with an organized race.

“We are continuing to have the feud. I suspect we’ll probably have to compromise,” Lowry said.

Lowry, 58, is one shy of 100 100-milers, though not all of them were in organized races.

He’s also run 16 200-milers, so should those count as two?

“I just finished my 99th 100, so it’s going to come to a head soon because I’m going to start telling people I’ve done a hundred,” said Lowry, who’s headed to Arizona to run the Cocodona 250 next month.

Lost in the cloud: What happens to your digital assets when you die?

Estate planning isn’t just for the possessions you can touch

Even the Luddites among us have lives online: bank statements and power bills delivered by email, passwords, social media accounts, digital photographs, video game assets and maybe even some cryptocurrency.

There’s more to your digital life than you probably realize, said Gerry W. Beyer, a law professor and a leading U.S. expert on estate planning who teaches at the Texas Tech University School of Law in Lubbock. Your assets include all the passwords that unlock your digital world. If you don’t plan how to pass that on before you die, it’s going to pass along with you. You have to know what online accounts you have, including social media, email, finances, subscriptions and digital files.

In addition to teaching others about estate planning, Beyer has written several articles and books on the topic, including “Estate Planning for Cyber Property.” That guide to help estate planning professionals, written with Kerri G. Nipp,

includes a breakdown of digital possessions that shows just how much someone might have and how diverse those assets could be. Their list includes items stored on technology like computers and smartphones and in the cloud: digital photos, personal and professional blogs, videos, emails, texts, documents, music playlists, medical records, tax documents, home security recordings and avatars, among other things.

Have you thought about what should happen to your YouTube and other videos stored somewhere in cyberspace?

Or who should be able to access virtual currencies and online banking and investment accounts or your eBay shop? How will others pay your bills online, either permanently or for a short time because you’re temporarily indisposed? Who’s going to cancel the automatic payment for the food delivery subscription when you’re no longer cooking dinner?

Some people keep client records, patient records, inventory, customer databases and more in cyberspace. Even domain names or blogs can be valuable, but Beyer and Nipp note they require a password to access or renew.

And wouldn’t it be a shame to let those airline and credit

card points expire when you know your daughter would love to use them?

There are also tangible assets in digital form, including cryptocurrency, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), assets collected in online games and Metaverse assets that bring an immersive experience to life, for example, per Beyer.

But Americans are notably bad at planning for what happens when they die or are disabled.

While fewer than a third of U.S. adults had a will in 2024, according to the Wills and Estate Planning Study from Caring. com, it’s likely that fewer still have planned for their digital assets. And many might not even realize they have them, Beyer told the Deseret News.

He believes failure to do that planning is more than a missed opportunity. It’s the beginning of a nightmare for loved ones and increases the likelihood that things that really matter could be lost in the cloud.

Have you thought about what should happen to your YouTube and other videos stored somewhere in cyberspace?

Start with what’s easy

First, of course, you have to know what you have. Do a digital inventory and be thorough.

Then start with what’s easy. That’s Beyer’s advice. Super easy means adjusting your setting on Facebook and Google and Apple and other social media or virtual platforms that let you designate someone who can access what’s there should something happen to you. You can set that up yourself without outside help.

If something happens to you and you took that step, a loved one can easily have the access you wanted to give them. If you didn’t preplan and take care of it, getting access could require a court order, lots of time and is possibly not doable.

Electronic communications planning is next. Do you want someone to be able to get into your email and find your Visa bill, the bank account statements and all those bits and pieces that come to your inbox? It would help them pay creditors, notify family members and probably transfer assets.

One of the key distinctions is planning between electronic communications and ones that aren’t: “That’s where you see a lot of rule differences,” said Beyer, who lists emails, text messages and private posts on social media accounts as examples. You have to decide if you’re going to give someone access to what the messages say or just the catalog, such as who the messages are from and to and the dates, but not the substance.

Sometimes people would rather keep loved ones out of private emails, documents or other electronic material “because they may contain hurtful secrets, non-politically correct jokes and stories, or personal rantings,” per Beyer and Nipp.

Figuring out access is not just about death, either. Will someone be able to get into your accounts to pay your bills if you become disabled short or long term? Skip your mortgage payment or phone bill for a month and see what happens.

Beyer said to consider what to do with your personal email from two perspectives: Put it in your durable power of attorney in case you become disabled, stating whether someone can access contents. And put it in your will in case you die.

The email trap

If you’re always in your work email and figure that’s the best place to have your statements, receipts and correspondence sent so you don’t miss anything, reconsider. Your work email account probably isn’t actually yours, so the likelihood you can legitimately share the password or grant someone else access if something happens to you is slim to nonexistent. Most companies shut off access about 11 seconds after learning you died and they’re even faster to cut you off if you’re let go.

Beyer said he has seen that happen to the students he teaches, too. “They get their email for a certain length of time after they graduate, then it’s all gone.”

Perhaps worse, your email will probably be forwarded to someone else — perhaps your boss or that colleague that was always competing with you for a promotion. If you leave a company, that doesn’t mean the company lets go of your role or work product. What arrives in that inbox could have a broader audience than you thought. And lots of times, companies monitor email, as well.

The work-around to losing access might be making backup copies. That requires both planning and ensuring that your work email agreement allows that.

Call in a pro

Digital estate planning involves paperwork, just like estate planning for tangible assets. Beyer suggests people need a power of attorney for property management, a financial power of attorney and a will or trust to control who will have access to assets and communications, including emails and texts. Appropriate plans are sorely needed for those who have cryptocurrency or NFTs. Getting a professional to help can ensure wishes are clear and enforceable, Beyer said.

Laws in different states vary, so he recommends finding a lawyer who does a lot of estate planning. “If you’re not legally trained, you may not appreciate some of the things you do that won’t have the result that you want,” he said. “A document that could be 100% valid in one state might be worthless in another.”

Beyer admits it’s a pain on lots of fronts. No one wants to think about death. No one wants to shell out money if they think they can do something themselves. “It’s a very stressful thing, but afterwards the difference of how easy or hard it’ll be on your family is incredible.”

Not planning impacts both physical and virtual treasures.

He worked on a case where the parents had been dead many years and the adult child lived in the house and paid the bills and taxes, but didn’t do the paperwork to transfer the title.

When the house needed major repairs, the heir couldn’t prove home ownership and things stalled. “It took almost a year for us to do all the legal proceedings and all the stuff needed to get the property transferred, whereas a simple will would have solved all the problems. It’s very common. It’s a real hassle and a lot of people don’t take the necessary steps to either plan or take care of it after somebody passes,” he said.

Assets like bank accounts where you can name a beneficiary don’t have to be in your will. But to pass the other things on, you probably want to list them and provide directions so that someone can actually get the information needed to access them. Back when everyone got paper bank statements and bills, a person could watch the mail for a month and know what was out there. That’s no longer true. Most people get those updates by email, which you have to be able to get into.

Paradise lost

With cryptocurrency and NFTs, you need pass phrases and seed phrases and passwords. Forget those and what was owned disappears. Unless they’re on an exchange, there’s no way to get the password back, Beyer said.

“People have lost umpteen millions of dollars because they don’t have any way of getting the password. You have to plan for that or the assets just disappear,” he said.

For example, in December, Medium reported that about 13% of all Bitcoin has been “lost due to forgotten private keys, hardware failures and irreversible mistakes. This isn’t just a quirky footnote in Bitcoin’s history; it’s a dynamic factor that could reshape its value and role in the financial world.”

The question is, how do you control the assets yourself while ensuring they’ll be safely transferred to someone you designate should something happen to you? Safely is the key word, because things can go awry between people, especially

when something with monetary value is involved.

There are lots of hypothetical situations that for some people come true. It’s hard to over-imagine the possibilities.

Say you tell your husband your password and the seed phrase for your cryptocurrency, then you divorce and he snags it.

What then? Or you die and your daughter knows information to access the crypto, but you actually wanted to leave it to your niece and did so in your will. Your daughter could say she forgot the password. Yikes. Then again, if you tell your niece the password so she can get it, maybe she’ll do so prematurely.

What you never want to do is put pass phrases, seed phrases and passwords in the will, where who sees it is out of your control. Wills, once probated, can be viewed.

Most people don’t have millions in crypto. But without planning, your photos and poetry and that music library you built over decades could disappear, too.

Startups tackling gaps

Even if you do everything you can to secure and pass on your digital treasure, things can go wrong. But the risk is smaller than if you did nothing.

What happens if your executor is lousy? “Then everything is bad,” Beyer said.

Companies are tackling some of those problems, storing names and passwords securely, with the promise that upon your death they will distribute the Bitcoin or whatever to those you designate. Beyer said a lot of them are startups with great ideas, but he added it’s hard to say whether or not they will have longevity.

He likens it to when stocks and bonds first became a thing and transferring shares and sorting out percentages of ownership and distributing profit was new. “Historically, that was very, very difficult. Now it’s easy and we don’t hold the stock certificates any more, right? A broker has them, but they are all regulated and insured and the system has evolved over the last 150-200 years, while we’re just in the very beginnings of dealing with digital things.”

The exchanges are based on the blueprint created for stocks and bonds, but for now at least, they’re not insured. “It’s all sort of still a Wild West sort of thing,” said Beyer.

Still, there are other tips to help the process of giving your digital assets their own afterlife. Among the tips from Beyer and Nipp: • Make tangible media backups. Put important digital materials on a thumb drive or copy them to a CD or DVD, for example.

• Take inventory of assets, including account details, usernames, passwords and instructions for handling the accounts in case of disability or death. “Store this inventory carefully, considering options like a trusted person, encryption, a safety deposit box or an online password storage service,” they said. Beyer and his wife use a safety deposit box their heirs will be able to access later. And they update it at least once a year.

• Consider storing photos and videos on a website that multiple family members or friends can access immediately. Why not share them now?

• Wills should state whether the fiduciary has access to digital assets.

• Consider putting digital assets in a revocable trust, “which may not become part of the public record and is easier to amend than a will.” You really don’t want to redo your paperwork with every password change.

• There are online afterlife companies that can help plan for digital assets.

• There are also businesses that will manage your passwords securely so you only have to keep track of one. But guard that one carefully.

The good news now, per Beyer, is that most estate planners now know a lot about dealing with digital assets because they’re so common. A decade ago, you needed a specialist.

That’s no longer true.

As marriage and childbearing rates decline, researchers look for ways to help families American Family Survey finds disconnects, areas of agreement on what families need and how to help them

Would changing the words used by policymakers and others bring Americans on the right and the left of the political aisle closer to agreement on the role that government can and should play in supporting family stability and ability to thrive?

That question came up in a discussion as part of the release of the 10th American Family Survey, hosted by the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. The theme was “Opportunities to a BroadBased Political Coalition for Families.”

American family life has been changing for some time, marriage and fertility both falling, to the chagrin of researchers who deem both to be important for family stability and having a country that does well not just economically, but in terms of happiness and on other measures.

Christopher K. Karpowitz and Jeremy C. Pope, both political science professors at Brigham Young University and the survey report’s authors, were talking about the challenges families face and the fact the majority of survey respondents believe that government could do more to help families.

But they noted that against a partisan backdrop, it’s hard to get much agreement on what form those supports should take.

“Family in our view is in a little bit of danger at the moment,” said Pope, who noted that any potential coalition that supports families is “split in an interesting, problematic way.”

The nationally representative survey, conducted Aug. 22-29 by YouGov for Brigham Young University’s Wheatley Institute, BYU’s Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy, and Deseret News, found that majorities on both the left and the right agree that “raising children is one of life’s greatest joys.” And they agree that children do better financially when they are raised by married parents.

But just 23% think government should be encouraging people to have more children. Most don’t want government to do that, though they are generally in favor of programs that support marriage and do deem helpful a number of programs to benefit families.

creates pretty broad approval of a number of would-be government goals, from helping low-income families to boosting education and bolstering other programs like housing.

Democrats are fairly keen on many types of supports for families, though there’s no majority support for programs specifically to encourage two-parent homes for kids, marriage or having more children.

Republicans are less keen than Democrats on providing more support to parents who are unmarried or to low-income families, among other differences.

How do you bring the two groups together to support families in a full spectrum of policies? Karpowitz and Pope wondered.

Not doing so means fewer people will marry, more will delay marriage and people will drift, as Pope put it.

Galena K. Rhoades, a research professor at the University of Denver and director of the

Family Research Center, noticed that when the survey used the word “encouraging,” the Republican response was higher. When “support” was used, the Democrat response was higher.

Could a coalition succeed if the terminology was different?

Who should be helped?

Words matter to those who might benefit from programs, too, Rhoades said. People don’t want to be told what to do but do want to be supported. Her experience working with low-income women is that they do want to get married, but would “like not to hear that they should get married,” she said.

Rhoades also noted that often people don’t know what marriage is supposed to look like because they haven’t seen healthy, functional marriages.

Brad Wilcox, a nonresident senior

fellow at AEI, said he believes the upper middle class is “doing quite well” and that the working middle class needs to be strengthened. Low-income families are “getting lots of things from the government,” he said. Those in the middle are not being helped.

Melissa S. Kearney, economics professor at the University of Maryland and author of “The Two-Parent Privilege: How Americans Stopped Getting Married and Started Falling Behind,” said the focus needs to be on supporting families and children in general, recognizing that families in the lower income groups need help, too.

Children in two-parent households have more resources and do better. Single parents often have more struggles and barriers and their children struggle, so the focus needs to be on “breaking cycles of disadvantage,” she said.

We should acknowledge that marriage and having two parents provides more resources and stability.

Two views that don’t meet

Both Karpowitz and Pope fear families will suffer if partisanship gets in the way of coalition-forming. “We talk about this idea a lot,” Karpowitz told Deseret News.

According to Pope, since the public isn’t interested in the government encouraging births, “If it’s going to be done, it needs to be done in a way that’s more subtle than the government saying we need to have more kids.”

He said that the “U.S. Constitution demands something that it never explicitly says:” a coalition that is “sizeable and sustained.” He said we tend not to have good coalitions in government right now because party control flips back and forth and sides don’t meet in the middle. So a real coalition would have to involve both parties. If government is going to have any effect on families through programs, it can’t start and stop them all the time.

To have a coalition that truly supports families would require getting together two groups that “aren’t that interested in getting together,” right now, he said. “They’re not going to want to play well together, but our point today is if you want to support

families, you need to figure out a way to get these two groups to come together and support a full spectrum family policy that talks about not just that families are good,” he said, but that the two-parent advantage is real for families.

He warned that failure to do that will lead to fewer and fewer families that are married, more people putting it off and drifting. They might never form the families they want.

Moderates in both parties and churchattending people in both parties in higher numbers are more apt to be in favor of governments providing supports for both marriage and having more children, the survey found.

Now in its 10th edition, the nationally representative American Family Survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

The survey looks at how families live, views of marriage and family, attitudes on topics like abortion and social media bans, as well as what concerns families, among others. This 10 edition to some degree focused on political divides — and found that regardless of where you sit in relationship to the political aisle, the economy and financial pressure on families is a very big deal.

STAGE 2: LARVAE

After just one warm day, larvae hatch from each egg. They look like tiny, wiggling worms. Some people call them wigglers!

Mosquito abatement specialists study the life cycle of a mosquito and then try to kill them before they become flying adults.

The best time to battle the bug is at the larva stage. Mosquito abatement teams often put mosquito-larvae-eating fish in the ponds and puddles where female mosquitoes have laid eggs.

STAGE 4: ADULT

It takes as little as one and a half warm days for a pupa to become an adult, flying mosquito.

After a larva is grown, it changes shape and becomes a pupa. The pupa breathes air through a tube that it holds above the water’s surface while tumbling around in the water.
