The road to political disengagement is quite poorly maintained. Any semblance of pavement ends some 30 miles west of Utah Lake, long after the cookie-cutter neighborhoods, divvied into perfectly paved grids, recede from view. Here, gravel traces the old Pony Express route, winding through canyons and over peaks, rugged enough to make your teeth chatter. Upkeep, it appears, ended with the horses. Dirt rises in holographic swirls. After two hours of skirting ruts and riding washboards, the car jerks to a stop and the engine stalls. Outside the window is a sagebrush-swept valley. Welcome to the end of institutions.

Anyone who winds up here, deep in the barren heart of Utah’s west desert, is either completely lost or deeply determined. This desert’s new residents prefer the latter. Philip Gleason, a 74-year-old former general contractor, is one of them. He arrives in a mud-caked pickup, sporting a cowboy hat and boots. He’s the mastermind behind this new community, prizing itself on a paradoxical mix of self-reliance and communal cooperation. The expectation is that residents will live off the land. The draw? They also live off the grid.

To some, like Gleason, that is part of the appeal. He shuns the typical labels — “we’re not preppers or doomsdayers,” he insists — but a certain degree of dystopian caution drove him to the desert. In a high-stakes election year, after years of a pandemic and global wars and economic uncertainty, the off-the-grid community has seen an uptick in interest.

Riverbed Ranch is Gleason’s brainchild. In 2019, he bought over 1,000 acres of sun-baked land on the border Juab and Tooele counties with visions of creating something that straddles the line between homestead and commune.

The closest grocery store and hospital are 60 miles of gravel roads to the south.

In 2021, Gleason became the first resident. He and his wife drove out a camper from their home in Orem and took up residence. By the second summer, five other families had bought parcels and moved out; by the next, 35 had. Now, over 130 of the ranch’s two-acre plots are sold, about half of them occupied full-time.

The vision is as ideological as it is practical. Prospective shareholders purchase a plot and commit to live a self-sufficient lifestyle — growing your own crops, pumping your own water, building your own house. Each resident has his own reason for joining. Some, Gleason says, are drawn for health reasons — they want to grow their own clean food.

Others seek safety, “away from the craziness.” Gleason reasons that most people are drawn by some combination of the two. “They just want a safe place to raise family and food,” he said.

The “craziness,” Gleason admits, was a major factor for his own move. “We seem to be undergoing a cultural revolution in the U.S.,” he said. “When we first came out here, we thought it might be too far away.” He shifted his truck into park, turning his face to meet my eyes. “Now, with everything that’s happening, we wonder if it’s far enough.”

On a recent Saturday morning, Gleason agreed to show off the experiment. We met at the Welcome Center, a modest structure at the north end of the ranch, and hopped into his pickup. The ranch stretches along three miles of dirt roads, divvied into two-acre lots. As we drove, Gleason pointed out the occupants: a chiropractor living out of a trailer; a small-engine mechanic trying his hand at passive solar. “This one, he’s never built anything in his life,” Gleason said, signaling toward a man leaning against a half-constructed cinderblock structure. “He’s learning from YouTube.”

Residents live off-grid, Gleason likes to say, because there isn’t a grid — no municipal power system, no sanitation utilities. There is no cell service, though most residents tap into satellite internet. (A decent number of residents work remotely.) The agreements shareholders make upon purchasing property are what Gleason deem as essential: build a house, build a barn, install a septic system, produce solar energy, construct a greenhouse, dig a well. To 19th-century Pony Express riders, this valley was a wasteland, a 40-mile desert between two springs. They didn’t know what Gleason knows: 60 feet below the surface, a freshwater aquifer flows fresh.

For Gleason, 74, this is less a retirement project and more a culmination of his life’s work. Even during his career as a contractor, his real passion was emergency preparedness.

When a car wreck forced a change in career plans, he transitioned to custom furniture, creating solid-wood tables that doubled as food storage containers. But he was frustrated by the restraints of municipal life. He had little control over the water that came out of his faucet or the food carried at the local supermarket. When friends came by and would see his emergency spread, they’d joke, “I know where I’m coming when mud hits the fan.”

Gleason, recounting this to me, shook his head. “I thought, ‘I’m setting myself up for conflict. I’ve got to get out.’”

When the opportunity came to move off the grid and build a community, he jumped. Soon, his sister followed, buying a plot next door. “I was a stay-at-home mom,” said Sandy Bennion, Gleason’s sister. Bennion’s husband was an accountant. “Now, this is what we do,” she said motioning with her hand to her dust-covered jeans. They’d spent the morning in their yard, trying desperately to keep their small orchard alive. The first thing they noticed upon arriving from the Pacific Northwest. was the lack of trees — there is

not a single shade-producing tree in the whole community, and the Bennions hoped to change that. They brought along some 70 trees with them. A year later, only five are still alive.

That has caused them to get innovative with their agriculture. To grow potatoes, they place suds in dirt atop bales of rotting hay. They use wooden eggs to trick their chickens into staying in the coop. They’re living out of a trailer, but they plan to build a barndominium next to their greenhouse.

“It’s kind of like being an artist on a blank pallet,” Bennion said.

produce as much food as possible. His greenhouse is full of vegetables and fruits. He’s organized rows of corn to avoid cross-pollination. He grows sunflowers to provide some shade. His 800-square-foot house has large, south-facing windows to maximize sunlight in the winter, but enough shade to avoid overheating in the summer.

Everything has a specific purpose, and it’s often informed

by Gleason’s extensive research into survivalism and cooperative farming. He’s picked up ideas from agricultural co-ops in Italy and Spain. He garnered the idea to plant sunflower seeds from a friend who lived in Germany after World War II, who told him the worst part of postwar rations was the lack of oil. “We’re not that far off here,” Gleason said. He fears any number of apocalyptic catastrophes that could hit the U.S. — a widespread power grid failure, an EMP disturbance, a cyberattack. “This is just history repeating itself. At the start of any cultural revolution, the people that control their food are the ones that come out on top.”

Americans are losing hope in our country and our communities. An increasing share of Americans feel distrustful or disengaged with the country’s political and social state.

Most Americans say they feel exhausted or angry just thinking about politics. Two-thirds think the country’s political and economic systems are so corrupt they need to be torn down and rebuilt. Almost half think a Civil War is possible in their lifetime. A comparable share of respondents in another poll think it’s possible in the next five years.

As confidence in America’s institutions crumbles, Americans offer a collective shrug. When Gallup began polling on trust in key institutions — like the government, the courts, or the military — in 2006, the U.S. ranked atop G7 countries. In 2023, for the first time, the U.S. ranked last. “We Americans are living through a social crisis,” declared Yuval CONTINUES ON PG. 8

Levin, author of “A Time to Build.” “This is a straightforward fact and easy to see.”

In some ways, the institutions have done it to themselves, Levin posits. Politicians favor drama over dealmaking. Journalists prioritize entertainment over education. Educators, in turn, have flooded universities with moral activism instead of inquiry. Levin’s solution, though, is not to tear down the existing institutions, but to recommit to them.

“Our challenge is less to calm the forces that are pelting our society than to reinforce the structures that hold us together,” he writes. Or, more succinctly, to install “a spirit of building and rebuilding.”

But Gleason seems to be offering a third option. Instead of either tearing down or reinforcing America’s institutions, the families flocking to Riverbed Ranch are replacing those institutions wholesale. They’ve created their own government and their own judiciary — they vote to fill a Board of Directors, and when conflicts inevitably arise between residents, they are sent to the Committee on Disputes, an extrajudicial body that maintains the peace. Around 80% of residents are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, reflecting the local demographics, and they meet each Sunday in a trailer on the north end of the ranch.

They trade in dollars, but also in livestock, produce, bread and dairy. The 70-plus school-aged children are homeschooled. A handful of parents have taken it upon themselves to provide arts instruction: A production of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” is scheduled for this weekend, performed by the ranch’s teenagers and directed by two adult volunteers.

Medical emergencies are handled by a mix of volunteerism and luck — one shareholder is a registered nurse and performs house calls throughout the community, and an-

other, a midwife, has delivered three in-home babies. Gleason told me he’s suffered two heart attacks since moving out, and he credits his skilled neighbors for his survival.

That self-reliance motif has its limits: several months ago, when a small child fell off a ladder and broke his femur, it took nearly half an hour for a life-flight helicopter to arrive.

The relationship between the ranch and the county government is complicated. At first, Gleason said, the county was skeptical of the community. “They didn’t think we’d last a year,” he said. “They thought we were a bunch of flakes — preppers, militants, doomsdayers, whatever.” Slowly, as the community has grown, they’ve found ways to cooperate. Riverbed residents say they pay property taxes to Juab County, and they have to get building permits for their homes. As a sign that the county has acknowledged their long-term presence, Gleason points to the newly-graveled county road that passes the community.

Beyond that, though, they avoid much contact. Some residents vote in local elections, though not all; Utah’s universal vote-by-mail system, a boon to many rural communities, meets its match with Riverbed, where the United States Postal Service does not yet deliver mail. The closest post

office is nearly two hours to the south, in Delta, where many residents have established P.O. boxes. They can go into town to cast ballots, which many will, Gleason assured me.

But many moved to Riverbed to escape politics, and seem no more eager to reengage. One resident, who moved here from California, began homeschooling her children because the vice principal at the local elementary school “was gay and openly promoting it.” Another couple, who moved from Portland, expressed discomfort with the progressive left’s hold on their old city. “They’ve lost their minds,” the resident said. “We needed to get out.” The solution was not rebuilding or reforming the schools or civic institutions. They chose to start their own.

The urge to escape is not a 21st-century invention. As civilizations sophisticated and urban areas sprawled, a desire to return to primitivity animated art and literature.

Annie Dillard found her solitude at Tinker Creek. Edward Abbey, in Zion. Both were inspired by Henry David Thoreau, who, for all his talk of living deliberately, was only a quasi-survivalist: his retreat, Walden Pond, was within two miles of the nearest town. Still, he constructed a life, by his own measure, stripped of “all superfluous luxuries.” It was as much a study of physical survivalism as it was social libertarianism.

Distrust quickly followed. Thoreau, in his attempts to front only the essential facts of life, became an immense critic of society’s institutions. Living closer to the dirt gave him a clearer view of the muck around him: Taxation became, to him, a form of servitude; news media was “more remarkable than important”; politics and government were simply social constructs. “To one who habitually endeavors to contemplate the true state of things,” he wrote, “the political state can hardly be said to have any existence whatever.” Deriving truth from politics, he declared, was akin to “making sugar from linen rags.”

Thoreau eventually abandoned the pond. Shortly after returning to urban life, Thoreau published his chief political essay, “Civil Disobedience,” that marked him as a small-L libertarian, allergic to heavy-handed government and far preferable to self-reliance. What he was asking for was not the absence of government, he wrote, but “better government.” That did not require traditional civic engagement.

The fate of the country, he reasoned, “does not depend on how you vote at the polls, … but on what kind of man you drop from your chamber into the street every morning.” But even this required a concession: the man who wishes to improve society has to engage in it each day.

The residents of Riverbed Ranch intend to vote in this year’s elections, Gleason assured me. But there was an air of disinterest when I asked. Gleason’s project is not to amass political power, he said, but to break free of dependencies — on food chains, on power grids, on government. “We’re not tax protesters. We don’t have a militia,” he said. “We just want to live off the land.”

Quietly, as his eyes surveyed the blossoming community, Gleason showed a hint of triumph. “When we have this all built out,” he noted, “we might be the third or fourth largest community in the county.

Four and a half years of renovations — with several more still to go — for the Salt Lake Temple and the surrounding Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City may seem like a long endeavor. But it’s a far cry from the four decades needed to originally build the iconic house of the Lord in the late 19th century.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is trying not only to restore and replicate the pioneer craftsmanship of the historic temple but also to preserve a sacred edifice emblematic of the sacrifices to build the temple as well as the com-

mitment to the covenants and ordinances performed within by Latter-day Saints for more than 170 years.

“You talk about the Salt Lake Temple, how it took 40 years to construct,” said Brent Roberts, managing director of the Church’s Special Projects Department. “But 40 years was generations for them. They were evolving, going through issues, strengthening their testimonies, and the temple was there when they needed it.

“And I look at those pioneers, especially their sacrifice — literally everything they had, in many respects — because they knew that they needed to have the power that comes with a covenant that they would only get in the temples of the Most High.”

That feeling is unique not just to the Salt Lake Temple, said Roberts, whose department not only renovates and restores existing houses of the Lord but also builds new ones around the globe.

“We feel the same way about the other temples throughout the world. It is the power that you receive in making and keeping covenants that makes a difference in individuals’ lives,” he said. “And we’re just thrilled to be a part of that.”

Roberts and Andy Kirby, the department’s director of historic projects, recently joined the Church News podcast to give an update on the ongoing Salt Lake Temple and Temple Square renovations. And in addition to detailing processes and progress, the two also spoke of the missions and mandates of

the project — to underscore the Savior’s mission and ministry, to honor and maintain the temple’s historic beauty and to be mindful of the role of the house of the Lord in making and keeping sacred covenants with God. Roberts underscored the sacredness of the Salt Lake Temple and the commitment to see that it not only is taken care of during renovation efforts but also gets the respect it deserves, having been built by the hands of pioneers in the late 1800s.

“We feel kindred to them, though we use tools that make it a little easier to do what we do, and though we use concrete that’s a little harder than the concrete that they made,” he said, adding of the pioneer craftsmen, “We don’t claim to be them, but we claim to be the people that are associated with them.

And I’m sure they’re cheering for us. And we’re just thrilled at that blessing and opportunity.”

Pioneer-era temples

Original construction of a temple in the heart of Salt Lake City began in 1853, with the Salt Lake Temple finally finished and dedicated 40 years later, in 1893.

In the April 2019 general conference, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to renovate and preserve the Church’s four pioneer-era temples — in Salt Lake City, St. George, Logan and Manti.

The renovated St. George Utah Temple was rededicated Dec. 10, 2023, by President Jeffrey R. Holland, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; the recently completed Manti Utah Temple was rededicated on April 21, 2024, by President Nelson. Renovation details of the Logan Utah Temple have yet to be announced.

Renovation of the Salt Lake Temple and Temple Square is currently scheduled for a 2026 completion.

The renovation project is more than just the temple itself and Temple Square proper. And in some cases, project work is completed in a number of areas — including the Church Office Building Plaza, Main Street Plaza and northwest portion

of Temple Square. Ongoing work elsewhere continues with the Assembly Hall, the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, the Beehive House and the Lion House.

“So, we’re still very busy for the next 2½ years,” Roberts said, “but as we move forward, we feel very confident that we’re fulfilling the mission that was given us.”

To emphasize and highlight Christ’s life, ministry and mission

Roberts and Kirby both pointed to the project’s mission for

the Salt Lake Temple and Temple Square project — as given

by President Nelson, who said the renovations “will emphasize and highlight the life, ministry and mission of Jesus Christ in His desire to bless every nation, kindred, tongue and people.”

As part of that emphasis, statues will be placed across the grounds in the future that focus on the Savior and His ministry, Kirby said.

As one example, he added, three statues will be placed later this year in the northwest quadrant of Temple Square proper, where reflective gardens have been recreated.

“One of our goals in these landscape areas is to provide a quiet, contemplative space where people can be near the temple and can pray and feel the Spirit and focus on the temple and their discipleship with Jesus Christ.”

President Nelson also mandated that every effort should be made to honor and maintain the temple’s historic beauty, Roberts said. “We’ve done that the best we can,” he said, explaining that what is being replaced or being added, such as the millwork, “will feel like the Salt Lake Temple. It’s identical, it’s repeatable.”

Kirby sees the purpose of the Salt Lake Temple renovation itself as threefold: to enhance the patron experience; make needed mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades; and most importantly, undergo a seismic upgrade so that the temple would stand through the Millennium, as outlined by President Nelson.

“That’s really what the temple is about — it’s really providing a great opportunity for members of the Church to come to the temple and to perform ordinances and to receive blessings from our Father in Heaven,” Kirby said.

The temple’s renovation includes expansion, with a 300,000-square-foot, multilevel “north addition” being key as the temple will go from having one baptistry to two and nine sealing rooms to 21. Also, endowment rooms will not only see an increase in capacity but be outfitted for video presentation for instruction for the first time ever. The live-presentation instruction has been done previously in English.

The audiovisual portion of the temple instruction will be available in many languages, Roberts said. “People for the first time throughout the world can come to the Salt Lake Temple, attend the Salt Lake Temple and be able to hear it in their own language.”

The Salt Lake Temple closed December 2019, with the extensive renovations beginning in earnest the following month.

In the four years since, work has ranged from digging extensive excavations to unearthing historic foundations to meticulous removal and replacement of exterior stones on the temple’s six spires as well as the return of a refurbished Angel Moroni statue.

‘Exciting time’ for seismic work

Kirby listed areas where temple renovation work continues, calling it “an exciting time for the seismic work.”

Crews strengthened the temple’s foundation, with new footings placed around the historic foundation, followed by the base isolators, the large mechanical devices that help the temple move less than the adjacent soil during an earthquake.

Workers are finishing the top transfer girders — beams that support the load of the temple on top of the base isolators. The transfer of the load of the temple to the new system is planned for this summer.

On the heels of strengthening of the foundation of the historic temple, a new, supportive foundation is being completed.

“It’s exciting to see the progress going, and we’re in many stages of construction throughout different areas of the temple,” Kirby said, adding that while concrete work continues in some areas, millwork and decorative painting are being done in others.

The goal, he said, is “trying to keep everybody busy in many areas of construction at the same time.”

The giant transfer girders — about 15 feet tall and 15 feet thick, full of posttensioning reinforcements — have been cast around both the temple’s east and west towers, with posttensioning cables inserted into the beams. This month, transfer girders are being cast around the north and south walls to complete the upper foundation of the temple.

concrete has set.

“We will insert over 260 miles of posttensioning cables into this transfer girder,” Kirby said. “It’s like a suspension bridge built inside a reinforced concrete beam.”

The transfer girder serves as the upper foundation, transferring the load of the temple from the soil it sits on and onto the new footings and base isolators.

“Imagine a bridge built to transfer the load to the new footings inside and outside the original foundation of the temple,” Kirby said.

From bottom to top

The base isolator system and seismic strengthening aren’t just low-to-the-ground efforts that deal with foundations and lower levels. No, the system has gone to great heights to help strengthen and stabilize the Salt Lake Temple.

Workers removed about 6,000 stones from the temple’s top spires, building new steel trusses inside each spire. Spires were rebuilt with the stones replaced in their original location — but onto the steel-truss system. The temple’s Angel Moroni statue was removed, refurbished and strengthened and replaced on the center-east spire and connected to the same support system as well.

“Later, we will connect the new steel systems in the roof of the temple and in the spires down to this new top foundation by posttensioning through holes that we’ve drilled through the walls and the towers of the temple,” Kirby said. That will tighten or consolidate and unify the historic stone structure on top with its new, strengthened foundation, he added.

‘Feel like vintage Salt Lake Temple’

There will be additional and different hallways and walkways through the historic temple and its north addition and new entry, he added. “The finishes will feel like vintage Salt Lake Temple.”

Roberts saluted Kirby’s oversight with two pioneer temple restorations — the St. George Utah Temple and the Manti Utah Temple — that have already been finished, with both having been rededicated during the past six months.

Individuals who have had the opportunity to be inside either

the St. George or Manti temples — during the open houses or during regular operations after their respective rededications — have witnessed the kind of quality work that is being done in the Salt Lake Temple. Roberts called the renovations of the two historic houses of the Lord in St. George and Manti “a prelude to what the Salt Lake Temple will look like, especially in St. George, with some of the finishes there and the antique look.”

Additional tidbits

A few other nuggets of information shared by Brent Roberts and Andy Kirby of the Church’s Special Projects Department when talking about the Salt Lake Temple and Temple Square renovation projects on the Church News podcast recently: • The Salt Lake Temple renovation project is just one of more than 160 active temple projects for the Church, ranging from design to new construction and to remodels and renovations.

• Some crews at times have worked 12-hour shifts, six days a week.

• The north addition is a multi-level structure built on the Salt Lake Temple’s north side. Extending three stories deep underground, the 300,000-square-foot addition not only provides additional support to the temple but also houses many of the temple’s ancillary services.

• Already visible from North Temple Street, two entry pavilions are being built on Temple Square’s north side that will serve as nonpatron waiting areas. Also arising on the south side of Temple Square and visible from South Temple Street are the south pavilions that will serve as the new visitors’ center.

• Over a recent period of two and a half months, almost 7,000 cubic yards of concrete were poured at the site in downtown Salt Lake City. To facilitate such a pour, North Temple and South Temple streets were closed to overnight traffic starting at 10 p.m., allowing more than 400 trucks to rotate in on separate pours.

• The rebar — reinforcement bar — used for the Salt Lake Temple renovation project is No. 18, with a diameter of 2 ¼ inches. By comparison, most regular construction uses Nos. 3, 4 or 5 rebar, with No. 4 being a half-inch in diameter.

“Do you want to see my favorite alligator?” A blond-haired man points out the reptile in question and begins to climb atop it, sitting on the base of its tail. He interlocks his fingers around its throat and leans back, pulling the gator skyward, making it look like a strange version of a rearing steed.

At this moment, surrounded by more than a hundred alligators at the Colorado Gators Reptile Park — a long way from home for them — Elliot Ross crouched in the dirt to shoot a portrait of man and beast.

“Why do you like getting on top of your alligator?” he remembers asking.

“I don’t know,” the man answered. “It’s just a way of saying hello.”

“Do you think he likes it?”

“I don’t know, probably not.”

“So why do you do it?”

“I don’t know. It feels good. I feel powerful.”

The man on the alligator glares into the lens, his leather work boots planted in the dark soil, his posture straight, his denim jeans worn.

The portrait is part of Ross’ photo survey “Good Grace,’’ a project and upcoming book in collaboration with the art collective M12 Studio. It aims to showcase the current state of Colorado’s San Luis Valley, where counties rank among the state’s poorest and driest.

Ross photographed the valley and its people for months. Now, looking back, this place gives that man’s response some context: In a region so rural and isolated, a sense of power and control can feel requisite.

The intersection of the Western landscape and people’s inner worlds defines much of Ross’ work.

A couple shielding themselves from the worsening Los Angeles heat under parasols; his family in northeastern Colorado praying out on the plains that an incoming supercell won’t damage their crops; a young woman in a quinceañera gown posing in front of the wall that divides the United States and Mexico.

These moments serve as a remedial view of the Western identity and experience that Ross has seen become romanticized, demonized and, above all, misunderstood.

“I get defensive when people refer to parts of the West as flyover states, which denotes there’s nothing of value,” he says.

“And I see my job as to illustrate the value that exists in these misunderstood places with all of its layered beauty, its diverse identities, its silent histories, its cultural worth.”

It started with barn cats and storms. Station wagons and tractors. Electrical outlets and Air Force drills.

In his early years, Ross photographed anything he could find to make sense of his surroundings. His grandmother had given him his first point-and-shoot camera when he was four years old, the same year his family moved from Taipei, Taiwan, to rural Colorado.

Quickly afterward, photography became a way to navigate the

culture shock of switching from a dense urban environment in a city of skyscrapers and neon lights to a home on austere plains where the nearest neighbor or grocery store was miles away.

His mother’s side of the family is Taiwanese Chinese, but his father comes from a background of American farmers and ranchers. Ross’ childhood chores included bottle-feeding his 4-H calf every morning, clearing tumbleweeds and fixing fences.

He had no allowance in the traditional sense, but every month he got a new roll of film. His family made a pit stop at Walmart on the hour-and-a-half drive to church on Sundays to drop off his film when it was ready to get developed. Those photos often depicted his life on the family farm — all the chores, but also summers spent building forts, searching for arrowheads, dawdling through canyons.

Over time, the photographs have come to communicate the values with which Ross was raised.

“All the expected descriptors certainly come to mind: self-sufficient, resourceful, endlessly hardworking with high esteem for family and sometimes God,” he says. “I was raised with these attributes, and they certainly have shaped who I am today. I believe in the small things that create a sense of community, like long-winded conversations with your neighbor.”

Those traits, in their absence, stood out more after Ross left.

He valued living in New York City and working as a photographic assistant for luminaries Annie Leibovitz and Mark Seliger. But he also found himself longing for family, canyon country, high plains, the West’s variety and nuance and contradictions.

DESERET NEWS | JULY 2024 So he came home and kept his camera in his hand. He captured wrinkled hands grasping a Bible so worn its spine is held together with tape; combines gliding through golden fields; farmers taking in a sermon’s message at Cowboy Church; a child spinning around in a makeshift rain dance to fend off an incoming storm.

Ross was named a Critical Mass Top 50 artist the year he released these photographs in a collection titled “The Reckoning Days,” and held his first solo exhibition at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado, the following year.

The response reasserted his decision to move back West, encouraging his newfound dedication to documenting the very world — once unfamiliar — that became his own.

“It was, in a lot of ways, an affirmation that I was on the right path,” he says. “I feel like I can make work here. Because I’m a part of this.”

Everywhere Ross goes, he carries a poem. It’s a one-page printout of Max Ehrmann’s “Desiderata.”

The paper is deeply creased from all the folding and unfolding, the reading and rereading. And of all the stanzas, the second one stands out the most to him: “Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.”

He had the poem with him when he ventured to Naco, Arizona, in 2017 to meet and photograph those living along the nation’s southern border with Mexico. There, he heard a man yell from a distance while unholstering his gun. “How would you like to get yourself shot today?”

The voice belonged to John Ladd, a fourth-generation Arizona rancher who has frequently appeared on Fox News to speak in favor of more stringent border control policies. Ross de-escalated the conversation by explaining what he was working on. He told Ladd he just wanted to listen. So for half an hour, he did.

Like the West, Ladd is not one-dimensional. The cattle rancher expressed some skepticism about the border wall at the time out of fear it would grant the federal government too much pow-

er. Yet he felt deeply protective of his ranch, which had existed in his family for more than a century, because it was an extension of himself and his history.

“I think we both left from that interaction having learned a little bit more and feeling more compassion towards others,” Ross says. “Despite how angry, how out of control some situations and reactions start, I think it goes to show that there’s so much power in just listening.”

After their conversation came to a close, Ross asked to take a photograph.

Ladd’s portrait turned out. In it, he stands in front of his pickup truck, coated in a fine layer of red dust with a license plate that reads “BEEF.” He’s in a denim button-up and jeans, a white cowboy hat in one hand as he squints into the sun. His eyes are nearly closed and a white mustache covers his lips, but somehow it’s still clear that he’s smiling.

“In my view, perceptions of politics and religion play heavily into an urbanite projection of flyover identity onto rural people,” Ross says. “The fact is, the rural West is not a homogenous place by any means.”

A common thread among Westerners, in Ross’ view, is open-hearted skepticism — a combination of curiosity, independent thinking and compassion.

His time with Ladd sticks out as particularly memorable because it demonstrated what can happen when that skepticism is put into practice. Misunderstanding can become clarity; similarities can overshadow differences.

In Niland, California, Ross met Cuervo, a self-proclaimed vagabond in his 60s who wandered the mountains and desert spanning Southern California and northern Mexico with a mule and donkey in tow. He wore a red flannel shirt and a gray kilt, and owned few visible possessions.

“He along with other vagabonds have shown me that the richest lives can be led with the fewest things, that wealth exists in interactions with others, through spontaneity and intimate knowledge of the land,” Ross says. “Through connection, we can find an understanding with others, no matter how different they are, politically or religiously or economically. It just reminds me of the hope in humanity.”

What does it mean to be a person in the West? Ross’ work is still attempting to dissect that, even to find his own answer for himself.

But what he’s gathered so far is that it can mean being overlooked or shrunk down to size to fit a certain mold. It can mean contending with stereotypes and clichés that make it easy to put off putting in the effort to understand the region’s complexity and examine its gray areas.

In the Talking Heads’ 1978 track “The Big Country,” the chorus tells of an airplane passenger’s reaction to looking down on the nation’s sprawling country: “I wouldn’t live there if you paid me, I wouldn’t live like that, no siree, I wouldn’t do the things the way those people do, I wouldn’t live there if you paid me to.”

What if that passenger got to see Ross’ West? Would it change their mind? Would that matter?

Ross believes so, and that debunking the myth of “flyover country” is all the more urgent in our times and all the more rewarding for those who attempt it.

“I think the accumulation of experiences that I’ve had with strangers, people I’ve met along the road, they’ve taught me to arrive in humility and to walk in grace. That one can never underestimate a person, and that there isn’t a place for my own judgment or preconceived notions,” he says. “They’ve shown me the incredible power and promise listening holds. And through that, essentially, they’ve shown me hope.”

We all get mad sometimes, but road rage destroys lives There are strategies to curb anger when another driver ‘wrongs’ you “It’s almost surreal.”

But it’s not as unusual as public safety officials would like.

One driver cuts another off or follows too closely. A driver may not adjust speed to let someone merge onto the freeway. Perhaps a cranky driver “brake-checks” someone perceived to be following too closely, forcing evasive action.

Will the other driver shrug it off? Maybe make a rude hand gesture? Will the perceived offense simply spark annoyance or will it kick off a dangerous game of tit for tat?

The decision is in the hands of the drivers involved — and a bad choice can have lifelong impacts not just on the people behind the wheels but their families and beyond. Law enforcement officials say that quick, angry reactions often spill far beyond what anyone imagined or wanted.

That truth hit Deseret News last month when a member of its extended family died in such an incident.

On June 2, Mike Brown, 38, and his two sons, 8 and 10, had a near-perfect morning before the day went terribly wrong, as Cyndi Brown, a Deseret News employee married to Mike’s older broth-

er John, recounts it. His wife, Mandi, was on her way back to Utah from a high school graduation in Idaho; they were all going to meet for lunch. That morning, Mike took his boys to hit some golf balls, then to play baseball. They went swimming. He was, Cyndi Brown says, a dad who loved time with his kids. Mandi was waiting at the restaurant when she got word he’d been injured.

With the exception of the little boys, the family wasn’t there. Deseret News has chosen not to address what happened in an altercation described by Lehi police as resulting from road rage, but rather to focus on the aftermath. It is known that at some point Brown and another driver got into a physical altercation. Brown hit the road hard. He never woke up.

John Brown gave him an ecclesiastic blessing, in keeping with their faith as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Over the next day, when it was clear he would not recover, “the focus shifted from saving him to keeping his organs vital” so he could be an organ donor, says Cyndi Brown, calling the situation agonizing.

He officially died June 3.

“As a family, we are grappling with the enormity of it,” she says.

KSL recently reported that in 2022, the Utah Highway Patrol counted 736 road rage crashes, resulting in 28 deaths in the state. In 2021, 27 people died. The number was 25 in 2020.

Property damage, injuries and crashes related to road rage are much more common than deaths, officials told Deseret News.

Exact numbers, though, are hard to come by. There’s no traffic violation category called road rage, said Lt. Cameron Roden of the Utah Department of Public Safety. Actions that both cause and demonstrate it are typically violations like following too closely, cutting someone off or brake-checking them.

Still, the hints are written in the crash data and sometimes in personal injuries. They are seen in the calls police dispatchers get about aggressive driving — some proven true and others not. It’s easier to count as road rage the calls they get when someone brandishes a firearm in a confrontation. That’s an offense that can get someone in trouble.

Lt. Chad Ray with the Lehi Police Department told Deseret News that the phones ring often with reports of traffic offenses: people driving aggressively, speeding, passing in unsafe ways. They may or may not locate the subjects of the calls. And people may think road rage is more common than it actually is. “But when it happens, it changes the lives of multiple people and their families,” he said.

Despite no accurate count, both Roden and Ray are confident road rage incidents have increased in recent years.

In May, Bankrate analyzed U.S. road rage, pointing out that aggressive driving and road rage are not synonymous, but that the former fuels the latter, often with deadly results. Its dive into U.S. statistics found nearly 1 in 5 drivers routinely drive aggressively, including speeding, running red lights, switching lanes quickly and following too closely. Those things are dangerous on their own, but also make other drivers mad. Reactions can be as life-altering as the dangerous driving itself. In the decade ending in 2023, road rage led to 481 shootings and 777 deaths nationally, the report said.

Slow, clogged traffic, people worried about running late and disregard for others and the law all contribute to both aggressive driving and road rage, the article said. Related behaviors, which may not veer into road rage, also kill. Speeding alone was responsible for 12,151 traffic deaths in 2022, according to the National Safety Council.

Guns increasingly play a role in road rage deaths. The article cited statistics showing road rage deaths from shootings increased nearly 90% between 2020 and 2024, compared to before the pandemic.

Every single road rage case is preventable. It’s in the hands of drivers, who can choose to engage or to let it go.

Ray points out that often multiple families must deal with tragedies that could have been avoided — and deal with it for the rest of their lives.

The psychology of road rage

E. Scott Geller, a distinguished professor of psychology at Virginia Tech, feels some sympathy for people who lose their temper on the road because he’s been there. Other drivers sometimes make him mad. Fortunately, his emotional intelligence is well enough de-

DESERET NEWS | JULY 2024 veloped that he doesn’t follow them or engage in dangerous ways.

That emotional intelligence is key, he said. “Research shows that is more influential in one’s success in life than IQ,” he told Deseret News, noting it’s a fancy term for controlling one’s emotions.

“Road rage reflects emotions out of control,” says Geller, adding that after studying related issues for 50 years, “it’s clear to me we are driving faster these days, not using our turn signals and we are driving closer to the car in front of us.”

Part of that is because cars are passing on the right and trying to squeeze in, with or without signaling, he said. So drivers close the gaps. “There are all kinds of driving behaviors out there that cause frustration. This leads to emotion that can be anger. If you don’t control that emotion, you have road rage. I’ve been there. Sometimes we drive as a result of our anger and that just contributes to more bad driving behavior.”

Emotional intelligence is more than road-worthy. Geller said it influences resilience, the ability to try again in the face of failure and self-motivation. It’s a “real determinant of future success.” IQ is nature. You’re born with it. EQ — emotional intelligence — is nurtured and developed. “We can control our emotional intelligence and we can help others control theirs,” he said.

People may get emotional about lots of things, from anger at how someone else drives to picking shoes, said Pauline Wallin, a clinical psychologist in private practice in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, and author of “Taming Your Inner Brat: A Guide for Transforming Self-Defeating Behavior.” When emotion surges, it’s hard to access logical reason. “People feel like a victim — someone did this to them,” she said.

In her book, she quoted comedian George Carlin, who said that anyone going slower than you is an idiot and anyone going faster is a maniac.

She describes “attribution therapy,” where you’re never at fault and are often a victim. Her example is tripping on a sidewalk and noting a crack in the pavement as you pull yourself back up. Oh, that’s why you tripped. It was not a moment of clumsiness or inattention on your part. “People attribute other people’s mistakes to character flaws, but for your own it’s just the circumstances. If someone is driving fast and cuts you off and you miss the light, it’s their fault, some character flaw.”

Some drivers will chase a person down to “teach them a lesson.”

That, says Wallin, is among “stories we tell ourselves: ‘My agenda is more important than anyone else’s and they’re doing this to me. I have to fight back’. I call that the inner brat.” In road rage incidents, she notes, emotion can be strong, especially if people escalate it, fueling rage with actions like yelling and hitting.

But don’t kid yourself, she adds. You can avoid allowing anger to take over to the point you ignore your own logic.

Willing yourself to let it go

Ray believes road aggression is more prevalent these days, perhaps in part because more people are living here and that means more people on the roads. More people are moving from point A to point B and “unfortunately people think their time is more important than anyone else’s.”

Showing respect for other drivers, even reluctantly, can calm tempers. But when people find themselves in a fraught situation on the road, “don’t hesitate to call us if you need us. We’d rather prevent than deal with the aftermath,” including consoling families, says Ray. Among his advice: If you find yourself in the situation where tempers are flaring and drivers are raging, “do your best to separate yourself from the situation. Get off the roadway you’re on. Don’t escalate it by hand signals or smiling. If the person pursues you, do your best to safely drive to the local police department while calling 911 and giving updates on where you are and what’s taking place.”

When Geller feels frustration or anger with other drivers creeping in, he uses self-talk. “Control your emotions, Scott. There could be lots of reasons for why this person is driving aggressively.” He focuses on the bigger picture. “Today, we seem to be more self-serving than ever before,” he said. “If we think about our interdependence — systems thinking — we can consider that the person driving aggressively might be rushing for a real emergency.”

Empathy helps. You don’t need to get angry, though you definitely want to steer clear, he adds.

Geller, who wrote a book and started a foundation called Actively Caring for People, said gratitude helps, too. Grateful people are less apt to lash out. It reduces negative emotions. He advocates a friendly wave and show of appreciation for people who let you merge in traffic or who stop for you at a crosswalk. “Showing gratitude makes us and the other person feel better and can reduce negative emotions on the road.”

Most don’t do that. When he and his students conducted experiments to see how many people express gratitude for such simple things, fewer than 10% acknowledged the courtesy. The truth, he notes, is we are interdependent. When people acknowledge that in even small ways, it improves their emotional intelligence and bolsters the ability to control emotions when someone’s behavior sparks anger.

The solution to road-related aggression, according to Roden?

“Start with yourself. You cannot look at others and blame them. We see that a lot. People think other people have a problem.” Roden suggests to “start by driving courteously, following the law itself.”

He points out that “if people do that, it fixes most of the problem,” freeing law enforcement and other resources “to address the other group that won’t do it themselves.”

If a driver is in a situation that becomes aggressive, don’t retaliate, he said. “Let that individual go down the road. Stop and get a soft drink or whatever.”

Wallin’s advice is to wait before reacting. “If someone is tearing down the street and weaving in and out and I don’t try to block them, I can be happy to have them where I can see them. I would rather have them in front of me.”

She recommends taking a deep breath and asking yourself if the situation and the other driver’s “bad” behavior will make even the tiniest difference in your life in a week or just an hour. If not, don’t bother with it now.

Wallin also suggests imagining you have just a dollar’s worth of energy. “How much of that are you willing to spend on that person?

A nickel? Will I give them 50 cents of my dollar? No.” If you let that frustrating, aggravating, rude, inexcusable example of a lousy driver go, how is your life going to change? It won’t. “You can intentionally not provoke or agitate someone who has frustrated you,” Wallin said. “You can do that not because you’re a wimp, but because you want to have control over the situation.”

She also notes that going to a public space tends to inhibit aggressive behavior.

If you know you tend to overreact or are sensitive to how other people behave and take it hard, you have more control than you may realize, Wallin said. It just takes practice. Be calm. If it’s not going to matter later, don’t react now.

“You prove nothing by winning whatever contest you have with another driver,” she said. “It makes you feel powerful in the moment, but doesn’t give you power. Real power is managing your emotions.”

The law steps in

The Utah Legislature has gotten serious about road rage.

Starting in July, a new law allows suspension of driving privileges for the instigator of road rage crimes if convicted. The instigator’s car may be impounded, too.

HB30 defines road rage as a criminal offense where an operator of a vehicle responds “to an incident that occurs or escalates upon a roadway” with “the intent to endanger or intimidate an individual in another vehicle.”

There can be fines and a license might be suspended or revoked.

Extreme cases can result in jail time.

Roden believes it will be easier to track road rage incidents and related aggressive driving after July 1. Among other things, the law bolsters education about the issue. And it creates new penalties, so that driving-related infractions over a class B misdemeanor can be enhanced a notch, even into a felony, if there’s evidence of road rage and the offense is serious enough.

It’s worth remembering, too, that car insurance companies have different policies, but some may excuse themselves from paying for damages caused by road rage if it can be shown the insured driver intentionally inflicted harm. Policies vary.

A family shattered

Mike Brown came from a large family, including nine siblings, their spouses and children. Most of them crowded into his hospital room to say goodbye.

The family members can’t wrap their heads around what happened, says Cyndi Brown, who has known Mike since he was 5.

Friends are asking why he ever got out of the car during the incident. The family can’t answer that. But they do know that he’d be here “if everyone had just taken a breath,” she says. “I think we have to bring civility back to our lives. We all get frustrated behind the wheel.”

Cyndi Brown hopes drivers will remember that there are “families in those other cars” if something bad happens, even if there’s just a single person there in the moment. “When you let emotions get the best of you ...” Her voice trails off as she holds back tears.

She’s painfully aware that two families are now suffering: Mike’s and the other driver’s. For both, that brief interaction resulted in “brutal loss” for a “moment that wasn’t walked away from.”

Mike Brown’s extended family is now figuring out how to emotionally support the little boys and a young mother unexpectedly widowed.

Cyndi Brown agrees with every expert consulted for this story. In her words, “We’ve all been brake-checked. We’ve all cut people off.

It happens because we’re human.” She adds, “You can get angry, but you have the ability to control and bring human-ness back.”

Daniel Simmons had quite the weekend.

On the night of June 9, the American Fork High senior smashed the high school 5,000-meter record by posting a 13:25.86 mark at the prestigious Portland Track Festival — less than 24 hours after being honored as the Male Athlete of the Year at the second-annual Deseret News High School Sports Awards gala.

The event was presented by the Larry H. Miller Company and held at The Grand America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City, where more than 170 high school athletes from 55 schools were gathered together to be recognized for their athletic achievement.

“We’ve got a legacy of reporting on high school sports coverage that goes back many, many decades,” Deseret News Publisher Burke Olsen said.

“We’ve got the largest database of high school sports statistics. For us, it’s thrilling to bring the athletes behind these numbers along with their families together to give them a great sendoff, a great celebration and a great night of recognizing the power of athletics and the outstanding achievements of these young people.”

In addition to the 23 established “Mr.” and “Ms.” awards for each sanctioned sport, the Larry H. Miller Company-sponsored event introduced honors for “Mr. Volleyball,” “Ms. Cheer” and the Male and Female Humanitarians of the Year. The Male and Female Athlete of the Year and the Male and Female Coach of the Year each received $1,000 checks courtesy of America First Credit Union.

For the second consecutive year, Simmons was named Male Athlete of the Year, earning Mr. Track honors as well.

Simmons — the two-time defending Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Player of the Year — is considered the na-

tion’s top high school distance runner and has captured two straight 6A individual boys cross-country state titles.

Of all his accomplishments as a prep athlete, the BYU commit said his favorite was shattering the high school 5,000 meter indoor record at March’s New Balance national indoor championships in Boston, where he outraced the previous best time by 18 seconds.

“I think a lot of success comes from belief, a belief in yourself, what you’re working on and having confidence moving forward,” Simmons said. “I think something that lasts forever is consistency. It will always be your best success-builder, along with working hard and working smart.”

Female Athlete of the Year was given to Jane Hedengren of Timpview, who was named Ms. Cross-Country for the second straight year and added a Ms. Track award in 2024 for good measure.

Hedengren has been a Gatorade Utah Player of the Year in both track and field and cross-country in her career. Most recently, the speedy junior was the 5A state cross-country champion and broke a state record in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 4:37.72.

“My dad has given me the advice to give myself the opportunity to be great,” Hedengren said. “That’s really helped me as I’m trying not to limit myself or my capabilities.”

The inaugural Humanitarian of the Year awards were given to Skyline baseball’s Brooks Walker and Eliza Doxey of Timpview soccer.

Walker has logged more than 420 hours of community service, including feeding the homeless, assisting students with special needs and even embarking on a humanitarian mission to Tonga.

Doxey — who serves as student body president at Timpview — has done much to serve disadvantaged youth in Utah County and volunteer at local events, but the endeavor most dear to her was organizing an elaborate Veterans Day assembly at her school to honor retired servicemen and women.

“Giving back to the community is everything to me,” Doxey said. “I don’t want to sound rude, but I think it’s kind of selfish to not give back. It’s helpful when everybody does their part and gives a little bit.”

Female Coach of the Year was awarded to Natalie Jarvis, who won her fourth-consecutive 5A softball state championship with Spanish Fork to cap off a 30-3 campaign.

In five seasons leading the Dons, Jarvis is a staggering 119-10, only once failing to bring home a state title.

Corner Canyon football’s Eric Kjar was awarded Male Coach of the Year, having won his fourth career state championship with the Chargers this past season.

Kjar has helped turn Corner Canyon into a factory for elite football talent since taking over the program in 2017, with his latest prodigy Isaac Wilson, now a Utah Ute, being named Mr. Football and three more of his players earning awards June 8 as well.

“It’s so rewarding seeing these kids do so many awesome things, watching them grow as men, improve their abilities and see some of them go on to realize their dreams playing at different levels,” Kjar said. “That’s why you go into coaching.”

Award winners and honorees for each sport are considered cumulatively and regardless of classification, all being determined by a panel of notable coaches, media members and other experts.

BYUtv broadcaster and Deseret News columnist Dave McCann served as master of ceremonies for the evening, with Emmy Award-winning broadcaster and mental health/addiction recovery advocate Alema Harrington offering the keynote address.

“This is such a special part of our lives,” Harrington told the audience. “High school sports is as pure as it gets. It’s important to acknowledge and recognize that.”

Volunteers Needed for a Migraine Research Study J. Lewis Research, Inc. is now enrolling for a phase III chronic migraine study of Dysport, with some participants receiving placebo.

This study involves 5 clinic visits and 4 phone calls over approximately 7 months, with the possibility of an extension phase with another 3 visits and 4 phone calls.
