Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described his country’s ongoing war as “one of the most transparent battles between good and evil in our time” during a brief speech July 12 at the National Governors Association meeting in Salt Lake City.

“There are different wars in the world, but this is a war where it’s absolutely clear what is good and what boundaries evil crosses. This is one of the most transparent battles between good and evil of our time. It’s clear that Ukraine has done nothing wrong before God and people,” he said, taking the stage in his trademark olive-green T-shirt and pants.

Ukraine, he said, suffers only because of Russia’s “criminal” actions and unprovoked aggression.

“So many people and countries have united to help us save our freedom, and thus the common human understanding that evil must always, always lose,” he said. “What else would our world rely on if evil doesn’t lose, and good unite?”

During the 10-minute speech, Zelenskyy received repeated standing ovations from the governors, the delegates and others in the capacity crowd in the Grand America ballroom.

Zelenskyy traveled to Salt Lake City at the invitation of Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, who chairs the NGA, and Jonathan Freedman, honorary consul of Ukraine in Utah and president and CEO of World Trade Center Utah. The Ukrainian leader attended the NATO summit in Washington, D.C., earlier this week.

Church leaders meet with Zelenskyy

During his time in the state, Zelenskyy met with both Democratic and Republican governors attending the conference, Utah elected officials, business executives and leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“On the margins of the National Governor’s Association Summer Meeting held in Salt Lake City on July 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was a guest of the conference, met with leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During a private meeting, the Ukrainian president spoke with a Church delegation led by Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. They discussed the Church’s presence in Ukraine and humanitarian assistance throughout the region,” church spokesperson Irene Caso said in a statement.

Utah Senate President Stuart Adams, who led a trade and humanitarian mission to Ukraine in May 2023, including a meeting with Zelenskyy, said the Ukrainian president and state leaders engaged in constructive discussions, focused on enhancing collaboration across humanitarian efforts, business and trade for the mutual benefit of Utah and Ukraine.

Having met with Zelenskyy twice now, Adams said, “He is the real deal.”

After his speech, Zelenskyy attended the signing of a sister-state agreement between Utah and Kyiv Oblast, the Ukrainian province surrounding the capital city of Kyiv. Cox and Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S. Oksana Markarova signed the memorandum of understanding. The eight-page

“We do not ask for your boots on the ground,” he said.

Ukraine only seeks air defense systems for its cities, weapons for men and women on the front line and support in protecting normal life and rebuilding, he said.

“This is all we need to withstand and drive Russia from our land. And to send a strong signal to all other potential aggressors, which are watching,” Zelenskyy said. “To ensure the true victory of good, your voice — each governor, each community leader, each heart — is crucial.”

In introducing Zelenskyy, Cox also talked about good and evil. He said it’s sometimes hard to tell who the good guys are and who the bad guys are in world conflicts.

“This is not one of those times,” the governor said, receiving the first of what would be several resounding standing ovations in the room for Cox and Zelenskyy.

Cox said Zelenskyy and his wife, Olena Zelenska, both of whom he said he spent time with July 11, are good people thrown into an impossible task. Lesser people, he said, would have fled the country.

“This man and this woman did not do that,” Cox said.

“They stood up to evil and their country rallied around them.”

NATO or no NATO

Zelenskyy visited heavily Republican Utah at a time when the GOP is divided nationally and locally about sending more money to Ukraine and whether the war-torn country should be admitted to NATO. He made his case for both earlier in the week at the NATO summit, in Congress and in a meeting with President Joe Biden.

“I think it’s important to distinguish between support for Ukraine and support for the dollars that are going to Ukraine. As I said earlier, I think it’s really important that we make sure that everything we’re sending to Ukraine is getting spent in the right ways,” Cox told reporters.

The governor said it’s appropriate for people to ask questions and get the right answers, “and that we do support Ukraine.” He said he was told the party will continue to rally around and that most Republicans support Ukraine.

also believe in standing for good against evil.”

Utah GOP Sen. Mike Lee has opposed sending additional dollars to Ukraine without accountability. His spokesperson last year said the senator doesn’t consider the “proxy war to be in America’s best interests,” which is why he is opposed to simply authorizing more funding. Also, he said other allies are not paying their fair share.

In a speech on the Senate floor this week, Lee said the U.S. can’t afford to consider admitting Ukraine to NATO nor should it make overtures about future membership. He also raised the possibility that the U.S. could be dragged into a war if Ukraine were to join the organization. NATO, he said, is supposed to protect its members and prevent war, not bring them closer to it.

“The U.S. cannot support the massive levels of support for Ukraine and any discussion of Ukraine’s membership cannot be on the table,” he said, later adding, “If Ukraine is in, the U.S. should be out.”

Asked about Lee’s comments, Cox told reporters that the NATO question is important and should be discussed.

“We want peace. That’s what President Zelenskyy wants.

We had that conversation but the NATO discussion is a big one. I don’t think that’s a very clear and easy answer about who is in NATO and who isn’t. But that will be part of peace discussions if and when Vladimir Putin decides that he’s going to stop killing innocent Ukrainians,” the governor said.

In his speech, Zelenskyy listed the vast amount of buildings and structures destroyed in his country since Russia invaded in February 2022 — nearly 160,000 civilian objects, 130,000 homes, 3,000 schools, 700 medical facilities and 170 churches.

Zelenskyy urged elected leaders and others in the audience to visit Ukraine “to see our people, our struggle.”

Potholes, pride and public humiliation A run gone wrong is only the second most embarrassing injury I’ve suffered

I was feeling really good when I set out for a Friday morning run, which, based on previous experience, should have been the first clue something was about to go wrong.

Did I mention I’m training for a marathon? Yes, I know, very impressive. Me and about a million other people suffering midlife crises. I’m a third of the way through training, thanks for asking, and have settled into a challenging but rewarding training cadence. Or at least I had until Friday.

I was about a mile into my run when I reached one of the city’s busiest intersections, on a major north-to-south road.

When the walk signal flashed and I was permitted to cross east to west, a long line of cars, four lanes wide, was stopped at the red lights on both sides. And every single driver in those cars watched as I began to run and, after about 10 feet, my foot landed in a pothole. Before I could process what had happened, I was splayed horizontally on the asphalt.

The only pain I felt when I got back up was the searing burn of the many eyes watching me hobble across the rest of the intersection.

It wasn’t until I reached the other side, after I yelled “I’m fine!” to concerned onlookers, that I finally glanced at the damage and saw blood streaming down my leg and pooling in my shoe. Which was not an ideal condition for running the remaining five miles of my route.

So I called my emergency responder (my husband, who was still asleep) and requested delivery of some Band-Aids and a fresh pair of socks. When he arrived and assessed my condition, he asked, “Are you sure you don’t just want me to drive you home?” to which I should have responded, “Yes. Please take me home.” But because I’ve been infected with Runner Brain — a condition that leads otherwise rational people to think things like “If Michael Jordan could play in the finals with the flu, I can finish this run” — I told him no, a Band-Aid and fresh socks should do the trick.

“Are you sure?” he asked with raised eyebrows.

“I am,” I said, even though I knew I probably wasn’t, and waved goodbye.

I made it another mile before I looked down again and saw that actually the Band-Aid and new socks had not done the trick. And that what I had dismissed as a scrape was ac-

tually a gaping wound.

I don’t like being wrong, so I didn’t want to call my husband for a second time and admit that he was right and I did just need to go home.

Unsure of my next move, I looked over at the strip mall at the other side of the street and spotted an InstaCare. So I ran over. At this point, there was blood not just on my leg, but pretty much all over my body after my failed attempts to clean the wound with my water bottle. So I walked in looking like I had just strolled through a combat zone, and explained that no, I did not have an insurance card, no, I did not have my ID, and no, I did not have payment.

Somehow, I was still admitted.

A few minutes later, I was explaining the incident to the InstaCare doctor as she fished gravel out of my wounds and stitched up one particularly large gash. “How did this happen?” she asked. “I tripped,” I said, and she was nice enough to stifle a laugh. But I was still humiliated.

This, however, was only the second most embarrassing incident in my career as a below-average runner.

The most embarrassing incident happened on a treadmill in a crowded gym. I was, once again, feeling particularly good, which I now know is an omen. I was feeling so good that I thought I could increase my speed. So I took it from a six to a seven. And I still felt good. So I took it from a seven to an eight. Then an eight to a nine. I was in a full-on sprint, which was drawing attention from some of the other Gold’s Gym patrons. But it wasn’t until two seconds later that every head in the building turned in my direction upon hearing the sound of impact after my foot clipped the side of the machine and sent me flying off and onto the floor.

The bottom half of me was on the concrete floor and the top half of me was on the still-moving treadmill. To this day, I do not know why I didn’t just stand up and turn off the machine. Maybe it was embarrassment brain fog. In my humiliated state, I decided the best move would be to try and step

back on the treadmill that was still running at sprint speed.

It did not work. In the very same second I tried, I was back on the ground. And every head in the gym turned in my direction, for the second time.

There was not a third try. With a crimson face and eyes glued to the floor, I stood up, turned off the machine, pulled my sweatshirt up to my nose, my hood over my hair, grabbed my water bottle and my keys, and walked out the building. I would have run, but I was afraid I would fall again.

The whole drive home, and for weeks afterwards, I winced a lot. Not from the pain of the marks left on my torso and arms, but from the humiliation I felt every time I replayed those 10 terrible seconds in my head.

I’ve been in a pattern of constant wincing again since Friday, not from the pain of the stitches in my leg, but from the humiliation of replaying the public pothole folly. My husband saw one wince and asked, “Does it hurt?”

“It does,” I responded. But I wasn’t talking about my leg.

I’m fine now. Just a little sore, and should be back to normal in a week. But if I start feeling too good, I’ll know to step extra carefully. And avoid treadmills.

An uncertain future A world fertility crisis spells trouble

Not long ago, Sweden was the poster child for having children. Delegations from other nations that were struggling to sustain their birth rates flocked to Stockholm to pick the brains of local demographers and family policy experts.

As recently as 2010, Sweden’s total fertility rate (the estimated number of children a woman has in childbearing years) stood at 1.98, very close to the replacement rate of 2.1. But then fertility began tumbling year on year, now at a current low of 1.45.

Fertility has been declining in this region since 2010, says Sunnee Billingsley, a social demographer and a professor of sociology at Stockholm University. “No one knows why, but it’s widespread in all the Nordic countries, which had relatively high fertility in the last decade. So it’s a bit of a surprising situation here.”

If there is a silver lining for the Nordics in all this, it’s that they are far from alone.

Earlier this year, The Lancet, the world’s premier medical journal, predicted that the global total fertility rate will drop from 2.2 in 2021 to 1.8 in 2050 and 1.6 in 2100.

Demographers are now projecting that nearly every country outside of sub-Saharan Africa will soon be failing to replace their people. This will, in turn, leave them struggling with an inverted pyramid of care as fewer working people will pay into public programs that support aging populations who are living longer.

The Economist last year warned that human civilization faces a “dire demographic trajectory” with “profound economic consequences,” noting ominously that “the number of people on the planet could shrink for the first time since the Black Death.”

Another Economist report published in May of this year lays out the stakes: “Sooner or later, therefore, every big economy will collide with a demographic wall. The bill from pensions and hospitals will pile on fiscal pressure. Sapped of workers and ideas, economic growth could collapse while public debt balloons. Just how catastrophic the situation becomes depends on whether policymakers … are willing to inflict pain on populations now in order to save future generations from more later on.”

Clearly, demographers and policymakers now face some tough questions. What is happening to the world’s birth rates? How far and how fast will this go? Should we panic?

And what can be done?

This isn’t the future we were warned about.

“Hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death” and “nothing can prevent a substantial increase in the world death rate,” wrote Stanford biologist Paul Ehrlich in his 1968 blockbuster book, “The Population Bomb.”

Ehrlich’s predicted dystopian future — deadly famine, depleted resources and debilitating pollution — stemmed from an out-of-control birth rate and helped spark an enduring preoccupation with population control in the early 1970s that spread over much of the world.

China jumped in with its notorious one-child policy, fixed in law from 1980 until 2015. Less remembered is that India launched a massive sterilization program. In 1976 alone, 6.2 million Indian men were forcibly sterilized.

Both China and India now have cause to regret their coercive reaction.

India’s fertility rate, now already below replacement level, is on a path to drop drastically further. The Lancet study predicts India will hit 1.0 total fertility by 2100 — more than 50 percent below replacement levels.

China is in an even tougher squeeze. Two years ago, its population fell for the first time since 1961 — which happened to be the last year of a disastrous famine. China’s population fell again in 2023, with its fertility rate dipping to new historic lows of around 1.23.

Elsewhere in the developed world, coercion to force fertility down has proven unnecessary. We now know that as health, wealth and education levels rise, fertility rates will fall of their own accord. The real question is whether it will

ever stop.

“There seemed to be this idea that fertility was going to fall in the same way that mortality fell, and then we’re gonna hit this equilibrium,” says Ashley Larsen Gibby, a social demographer at Brigham Young University. But she says experts were surprised in the 1980s when fertility continued to fall, well past that elusive equilibrium point.

Something was happening that had nothing to do with falling infant mortality. A new explanation was needed to understand the ongoing decline.

This led to the theory of a second demographic transition, as formulated by Belgian demographer Ron Lesthaeghe, which Gibby describes as eroded barriers and new pathways that allowed for new ways of being human, and these new possibilities all competed with childbearing for time and space and money. Childbearing was now just one of many ways one could seek fulfillment in one’s 20s or 30s.

Children themselves now took on a very different meaning. “So instead of having children who could help you economically,” Gibby says, “we’re having children in a way where it’s going to be huge investments on your part that you probably won’t get back.”

Faced with this array of choices and priorities, women who did want children began to put off that fork in the road

until much later in their lives, says Éva Beaujouan, a demographer at the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital in Vienna.

She studies the gap between women who desire to have a child and those who actually do. She spends a lot of time thinking about what precisely it means to want to have a child, and what variables would deter or encourage someone.

On the deterrent side, both Gibby and Beaujouan paint a picture in which perfect parenting is the natural flip side of an abundance of choices, with both driving toward postponement. There’s been a shift in the perceived prerequisites that people would need to achieve before they could have children, Beaujouan explains.

For those who are likely to only have one or two children, there seems to be pressure to mold the perfect child as an expression of oneself, as a kind of trophy child.

“In many countries,” she says, “there is an impression that you really need to be the perfect mother, the perfect father, and that then you need to have many, many things before you can have a child. And so you just wait and you wait and you wait and you wait. And then one day it’s too late.”

So what is to be done?

If Sweden still has anything left to teach us, it may be that solutions are elusive and cross-national comparisons are difficult.

The fertility pilgrims still come to Stockholm University, says Billingsley. But these days, the questions are more skeptical, the answers less glib. There is less swagger in Sweden.

Yet the social demographers soldier onward. Billingsley’s research focuses on subtle variations in child and family policy, trying to make useful cross-national comparisons out of a mishmash of usually incommensurate data.

She notes, for starters, that even though the Nordic states are generally seen as a homogeneous bloc on family policy, there are great differences among them. Sweden prioritizes “reattaching” new parents back to the workforce after the first year, while Finland provides parental income replacement for even longer periods.

One concern with the Finnish approach is that potential mothers may balk at putting their skills on hold so long that their reentry to the workplace is stifled. “There’s a lot of research going on as to how this works later for her and how it affects her career,” she says, adding that her research is not focused on what prospective mothers ought to prefer, but what they in fact do prefer, and what policies might smooth or hinder the choice to become a parent.

But even if policy details were identical, Billingsley adds, cultural variables are hard to account for. In the early 2000s, both South Korea and Germany borrowed Swedish pro-natal policies. South Korea saw no benefit in birth rates. But Germany’s fertility rates rebounded, seemingly confirming the Swedish model that was now struggling at home. Why would a borrowed policy that took flight in Germany suddenly crash in its homeland?

One answer is that culture itself is fluid, notes Beaujouan. Sudden shifts in values and behavior driven by fears, uncertainties, new opportunities or even technology could silently, but seismically, shift the foundation of seemingly successful policy regimes or the cultures in which they lie.

There is some evidence of such shifts in the United States, and in some surprising places. Consider Utah. In 2008, the Beehive State’s total fertility rate of 2.6 led the nation, with the next closest state standing at 2.5. But by 2022, Utah had dropped to 1.85, fourth in the nation. In roughly half of one generation, Utah’s fertility fell nearly 29 percent, a sharper decline than all but two other American states.

There are multiple explanations for Utah’s shift. A strong economy during that period was accompanied by a spike in Utah’s formerly modest cost of living. Housing prices sky-

rocketed, likely sparking uncertainty for prospective parents entering the job market.

But there may be more involved, and Gibby at BYU shared some insight into other factors.

Brigham Young University is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which has always put a high priority on family formation.

Yet Gibby told me that she has had repeated conversations with students who have felt pressure from parents, and even grandparents, to defer marriage and instead pursue more education and economic security.

Gibby, who herself graduated from BYU 10 years ago, describes a marked difference in the cultural tone in her day compared to the present. “When I was an undergrad, I felt a lot of pushback of me wanting to have a career,” she says.

“And my students are experiencing the opposite, where if they want to stay home, they’re feeling a huge pushback against that.”

She cites multiple stories of students whose grandparents offered to pay for study abroad, in hopes of distancing them from a serious boyfriend. In other cases, parents told them that they would stop paying tuition if they got married.

BYU family life professor Dean Busby, who teaches classes on marriage and sexuality, confirms Gibby’s observations. There are multiple vectors pushing students to go slow on marriage and children, Busby notes, and education and economics do play a major role. But he says there has also clearly been a marked shift in the culture surrounding these students. This shift seems to reverberate across the world, cutting across national and subculture boundaries.

All the demographers I spoke with pointed back in some form to this generalized fear of the future — economic, geopolitical, environmental — which seems to have heightened markedly in the last generation. They pointed to intensive parenting expectations as an intimidating factor.

In Stockholm, Billingsley is no stranger to the uncertainty thesis. Swedish policy has always sought to minimize economic barriers to parenthood. But it is increasingly clear that something else is in play.

In Vienna, Beaujouan knows that many of those she studies would prefer to have at least one child. But there, again, she finds that pervasive uncertainty.

“I think that the uncertainty is much, much stronger today than it was in my generation,” she says. “They really think that they don’t know where the future will be.

And for them, maybe it’s not even something they really want to think about, whether they want to have children now or not.”

Beaujouan, who is 46, says that studying such uncertainties is difficult.

Demographers deal in numbers, data, probabilities. This, whatever it is,

is amorphous. “It may be something that’s really just in the air,” she says. “And so they probably don’t relate it to their behavior because … they don’t perceive it enough to manage to grab it.”

The real question now is whether there are any answers at all.

The recent Lancet study duly modeled different fertility scenarios that give a predicted boost to countries that adopt “pro-natalist” policies. And yet, the authors acknowledge that those policies don’t derive from any evidence of efficacy. There is no such evidence, they say.

The authors tepidly conclude that “implementing pro-natal policies that support parents and children might provide a small boost to fertility rates.”

Darrell Bricker, a political scientist and chief executive officer of the opinion research firm Ipsos Public Affairs, isn’t so hopeful. “The truth is (those policies) don’t work anywhere,” he tells me, “because that’s not the reason people don’t want to have kids. The main reason is they just don’t want to have kids.”

In 2019, Bricker and John Ibbitson published “Empty Planet: The Shock of Global Population Decline,” where they predicted that the world’s human population would crest below 9 billion, and then begin falling sharply as soon as 2060 or 2050.

“But now it’s probably looking more like in the 2040s,” he says. “This is just over the horizon. It’s not like a century away. It’s about to happen. I mean the entire global baby boom is going to be 65 in 2030.”

The first step toward a solution is to simply start telling the truth, Bricker says. “There has been a willful denial of the facts.”

‘Saints at War’ project: Preserving Latter-day Saint wartime accounts of faith and sacrifice, Church leaders included Since 1999, the project has collected more than 3,000 accounts, which are now preserved at BYU’s L. Tom Perry Special Collections Department

More than six decades before serving as President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Russell M. Nelson was a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. For much of his military service, President Nelson was assigned to Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. But during the summer of 1951, he toured all mobile army surgical hospital (MASH) units in South Korea and gave recommendations for improved medical care for injured soldiers, which sometimes took him right to the battlefront.

While visiting one MASH unit, President Nelson met a young Latter-day Saint soldier who had been paralyzed by a gunshot wound. He wanted to comfort the young man but wasn’t sure what to say. He said he “greeted him and expressed condolences and love as best I could.”

President Nelson ended up being the one who was comforted when the soldier said, “Don’t worry about me, Brother Nelson, for I know why I was sent to the earth — to gain experience and work out my salvation. I can work out my salvation with my mind and not with my legs. I’ll be all right.”

“The faith of that young man has motivated me ever since,” President Nelson recorded afterward.

The military memory is one that President Nelson shared with Brigham Young University’s “Saints at War” project, an ongoing effort to gather and document personal accounts of Latter-day Saints who served their country during wartime.

Interviewing President Nelson about his wartime experiences was one of the true career highlights of BYU Church History professor Robert C. Freeman and a favorite memory of working on the project.

“He is arguably the first President of the Church to have been a bonafide member of the military who was in a war zone,” Freeman said. “Even our own present Prophet has shared and lent his voice to this preservation process.”

‘Saints at War’ project

Since 1999, the project has collected more than 3,000 accounts, which are now preserved at BYU’s L. Tom Perry Special Collections Department, thanks to the work of many colleagues, volunteers and collaboration with the National Veteran’s History Project with the Library of Congress and National Archives.

The collection includes information and perspectives of individuals who served in international militaries. The thousands of voices preserved demonstrate the global Church membership experience, Freeman said.

“The mission of the project has been to educate, pay tribute and to deepen appreciation of the cost of freedom to

those both inside and out of the Church,” he said. “One distinctive aspect to the research is that it seeks to shine a light on the inspiring moments when, in the midst of danger, a sense of divine preservation was experienced by a soldier, airman or sailor.”

As a result of the project, many of the personal accounts from various wars in the 20th century, including the experiences of several Church leaders, are featured in books and documentary films. Over the years, BYU has held several veteran conferences to recognize and honor those who have served.

“Veterans have shared their accounts in a spirit of trust and with the hope that their experiences can inspire generations that follow after them,” Freeman said.

“The price [of freedom] never stops getting paid, and Latter-day Saints have been there in whatever the crisis or calamity. They have been there at the forefront and contributed fully. The modern conflicts are no different than some of the better known of the past, and they do it humbly,” Freeman said.

“Typically, these soldier/Saints reject being labeled ‘heroes.’ Still, the simple truth is that without them it may well be that our lives could be very different and experienced in much less comfortable circumstances. Of course, Memorial Day weekends are focused first and foremost remembering those who gave their tomorrows for our todays.”

Elder Neal A. Maxwell, World War II

Elder Neal A. Maxwell of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who died in 2004, served as an infantryman in the U.S. Army. He fought in the Battle of Okinawa and was part of the occupation force in Japan after the war.

Part of Elder Maxwell’s experience is told in “Saints, Vol. 3.” During the Battle of Okinawa, in the midst of heavy warfare and relentless rains, he found himself in a foxhole that became saturated with mud, making rest nearly impossible.

He endured meager rations and foul-tasting water but chose to follow the Word of Wisdom by refraining from coffee and instead gathering rainwater. On Sundays, he used saved rainwater and a biscuit for the sacrament.

One night in May 1945, as enemy shells exploded near his position, Elder Maxwell left his foxhole but soon returned when he realized there was nowhere else to go. Kneeling in the mud and darkness, he prayed fervently, acknowledging that many righteous men had died despite their prayers.

He asked the Lord to spare his life, promising to dedicate himself to God’s service if he survived. He found solace in his patriarchal blessing, which promised divine protection.

After his prayer, the shelling ceased, and Elder Maxwell felt a profound sense of divine intervention. Grateful, he wrote to his family, expressing his loneliness and the heavy toll of war on his spirit. He acknowledged that only God had prevented his death and affirmed his testimony.

In his account with “Saints at War,” Elder Maxwell said: “My only surviving aunt said that sometime in May of 1945, she doesn’t remember the day, Mother had told her the next day that she and Dad had prayed their usual vocal prayer and included me, of course, and my sisters. Then they got into bed and began to go to sleep, and Mother said, ‘Clarence, we’ve got to get out of bed and pray again; Neal is in grave danger.’ And so they got out of bed and prayed again for me. I don’t know which day that was, but I rather imagine, given time zones and all of that, it would have probably been when Japanese artillery shelling occurred at its worst stage.

The phrase that comes to mind from the Book of Mormon is about some other young men who went off to war, and [what] they [said] was, ‘We do not doubt our mothers knew it.’ I don’t have any doubt that my mother knew intuitively that they needed to pray. Such parenting … is what I hope our young men and women experience, because they will be at times in great danger, too.”

President Boyd K. Packer, World War II

The late President Boyd K. Packer, who served as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles before his death in 2015, enlisted in the United States Air Force in the spring of 1943. He was trained to fly bombers and was assigned as a pilot in the Pacific, stationed with the American occupation forces in Japan for nearly a year. During that time, he was instrumental in baptizing the first Japanese family that joined the Church after the war.

His brother, Col. Leon C. Packer, was a much-decorated pilot who became a brigadier general in the Air Force. Before leaving for the war in the Pacific, President Packer visited with his brother in Washington, D.C., and asked him how he kept himself together in dangerous situations. His brother said he would sing a hymn to himself, and the hymn would sustain him and help him stay on the course. In the following account, President Packer shares a time when his brother’s advice helped him through a dangerous situation.

“In the spring of 1945 I was able to test that lesson Leon had taught me those months before. The war in the Pacific ended before we reached the Philippines, and we were ordered to Japan. One day we flew out of Atsugi airfield near Yokohama in a B-17 bomber bound for Guam to pick up a beacon light.

Elder Russell M. Nelson, then a first lieutenant and later a captain, was part of a team that visited all five Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals, including the 8209 in June 1951 at Hongchon, Korea. The results of the significant tour resulted in changes of caring for the wounded.

Elder Wickman served as a captain in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1969. During that time he completed two tours of duty in Vietnam as an Army Ranger officer assigned first as an infantry platoon leader and next as an adviser to the South Vietnamese Army. For his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals. He was called to the Second Quorum of the Seventy in 1994 and later served in the First Quorum of the Seventy from 2000 to 2010 before receiving emeritus status.

In the midst of World War II, a convert baptism takes place in a lagoon in Saipan. Convert baptisms during wartime service provided some Latter-day Saints with pivotal spiritual missionary experiences often far from home.

“It was early November 1966. I had been in country for nearly 10 months. Our battalion had spent several weeks in the field and had just returned to our base camp for a period of rest and relaxation. It was Saturday night, and having just taken our first shower in many days, we were sitting on our bunks cleaning our weapons and listening to music on the Armed Forces Radio Network. Suddenly, an urgent message was received at our battalion headquarters in the jungle. Our battalion was needed to go to the rescue immediately.

“In my case, that feeling of anxiety that is more or less one’s constant companion in the combat zone ripened into a dark sense of foreboding. However, there was no time for reflection or a kneeling prayer. We had to grab our weapons and equipment and go. As we moved out through the entrance to our base camp, I uttered a silent prayer in my heart. As I did so, there came to my mind — literally — a still small voice.

It was as clear as crystal, and it spoke the words to a passage of scripture that I had first memorized as a seminary student and then later as a full-time missionary. It is found in Proverbs 3:5-6: ‘Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.’ No sooner did that voice come into my mind than the sense of foreboding vanished. In its place was a warm reassurance of peace.

“Our battalion’s night rescue mission lengthened into another extended operation that took us far from our base camp, almost to the Cambodian border in Tay Ninh Province.

As the days and weeks went by, that experience with the Spirit was crowded to the back of my mind. Finally, it was the day of Thanksgiving 1966 — the last day we were to be in the field on that particular operation. I was riding in an armored personnel carrier through a lightly forested area of jungle.

Suddenly, there was a tremendous explosion beneath the vehicle that seemed to lift it into the air. We had rolled over an enormous enemy land mine.

“The force of the explosion was so great that it blew the engine apart. It blew the tracks and all of the road wheels off both sides of the vehicle. The driver was blasted from the vehicle, landing some 15 or 20 feet in front of it. Everyone inside was wounded, including me, but no one was killed.

“No sooner did that land mine explode, than there again came to my mind the same voice and that same passage of scripture: ‘Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.’

“There was no question that my life was spared that day by divine intervention. More than that, this experience serves as one of the most profound in my life in testifying of the reality of God and His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Now, as a Seventy and a general authority, I stand as an ‘especial witness’ (Doctrine and Covenants 107:25). I testify that I received an essential element of that witness on a jungle battlefield far from home on that November day in 1966.”

At Holiday Oil, the Wagstaff brothers keep their dad’s vision alive ‘What would Jerry do’ is the mantra that ensures the family-run business survives and thrives

Brothers Scott and Mike Wagstaff are the leaders of one of Utah’s most successful home-grown businesses.

Their company, Holiday Oil, turned 60 this year. Year-in, year-out its growth has been as steady as a metronome. In July, they’re set to open their 75th store. By the end of the 2020s, they plan to hit 100. They have 1,000 employees on their payroll, and counting.

How have they survived, thrived and expanded when so many other family-run gas station businesses have been kicked to the curb, engulfed by the fuel companies and the big corporations?

What’s their secret?

Basically it boils down to four words: What would Jerry do? *** Jerry is Scott and Mike’s father. He died two years ago, a month shy of his 80th birthday. But it’s Jerry Wagstaff ’s fingerprints that remain, testifying to the practicality of Holiday’s rather unorthodox way of doing business. For one thing, he built an empire without going into hardly any debt. For another, he insisted on owning the ground his gas pumps stand on. For yet another, he never stopped changing with the times.

“That goes through my head a lot, what would he (Jerry) have done,” says Mike, 53, as his older brother Scott, 60, nods his assent. The brothers are taking a break at the big 10-pump Holiday Store in Magna, sitting at an outdoor table, telling Jerry stories.

The family enterprise was launched innocuously enough in February of 1964. Jerry had just returned from a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Scotland and married Floy, the girlfriend who waited for him.

The newlyweds settled down in what was called Granger then and is now called West Valley City. Through oil contacts of his father, Nathan, Jerry took over the leases of a few struggling gas stations that were on their last fumes.

He named his new business after Holladay, the city where his grandparents had a small farm on the east side of the valley, but he changed the spelling to Holiday. In time he added a smiling clown as the logo.

“He said, ‘I want something happy,’” says Mike.

Some of his leased stations found their footing, others did not and had to be shut down. All the while, Jerry, with no education beyond his diploma from Highland High School, lived by his wits.

“He had a gift with people,” says Scott. “I think a lot of the success of the company was due to the kind of charm he had in getting people to help him and get excited about what he was doing.”

In 1969, Jerry made a sharp pivot out of the leasing world and decided to buy an acre of land on Redwood Road and build a small station on the corner.

That, according to his sons, is the only time Jerry Wagstaff ever went into debt.

“And it only lasted maybe five years,” says Scott. “He was very opposed to having any type of debt.”

From the start, Jerry made it his goal to have the lowest gas prices in town. That would be his niche; his way to attract and keep customers. To see what his competitors were charging, he would get in his car and circle the valley, then come back and lower his price a penny or two, sometimes going under cost.

His boys smile when they tell about how, on Friday afternoons, their dad would watch until the manager of the gas station across the street would go home; then he’d run out to the sign in front and lower Holiday’s price, ensuring a weekend with the cheapest gas.

Besides attracting customers with the low prices, “it was about volume,” says Mike. “His game was always, ‘how can I get enough volume to be able to negotiate with the refinery to get a better price?’ He’d say margin would come eventually, but if you lose all your volume it’s really hard to get back.”

A major change came in the 1970s when 7-Elevens started adding gas pumps.

Seeing this, Jerry said, “Well, if they’re going to start selling fuel I’m going to start selling Twinkies.”

He hired a veteran of the grocery business, Darwin So-

rensen, to help him transform his stations. Out went the two-stall mechanic bays, cemented over and replaced by soft drink machines.

Another change came when Phillips 66 stations added free self-serve car washes.

Seeing that, “Our dad said, ‘well, I guess I need to go get a car wash,’” says Scott. To this day Holiday Oil stations have self-serve car washes, although they’re no longer free.

“He was always innovating,” says Mike, “and we continue to try to change and do something different.”

It’s not like Scott and Mike are new to any of this. They’ve been working at Holiday since they were kids and have been largely in charge since 2003, when Jerry and Floy left for three years to serve another church mission.

But it’s Jerry’s core philosophy they zealously keep in place: low debt, high volume, own the property every station sits on — and be sure to not let the world pass you by.

Among other things, that means nobody gets in the car anymore, Jerry style, to circle the valley and check on the other guy’s price.

“We used to spend four or five hours every Saturday morning taking a loop around the valley. Now you can find out everything on your cellphone,” says Scott, a bit wistfully. Jerry’s was a good world to live in.

Abby Cox: Parents love teachers ‘because they love our kids’ 19 Utah educators, businesses that support education were celebrated during the second annual Honors in Education Gala presented by the Deseret News

There were two teachers in Chelsi Ostergaard’s childhood that impacted her psyche in profoundly different ways.

While her sister battled cancer, “my dad had just up and left our family,” she said. At the same time, Chelsi was struggling in school because she has dyslexia.

“I just continued to fall further and further behind in school. I actually had a teacher tell me once that I was stupid and that I would never amount to anything, I had no confidence in myself and felt extremely worthless,” she said.

In the seventh grade, another teacher altered Ostergaard’s trajectory.

“She was my biggest champion and helped me gain confidence and helped improve my education. Because of her, I chose to become a teacher so that I could be the biggest champion to all of my students, that I could help each of them know their worth and reach their fullest potential,” Ostergaard said in a video screened July 8 during the Honors in Education Gala held at The Grand America Hotel.

Ostergaard, an educator at Ignite Entrepreneurship Academy, a public charter school in Lehi, was among 19 educators honored as Teachers of the Year during the second annual educator recognition event presented by the Deseret News. Six other people were honored for their respective businesses’ contributions to education in the Beehive State.

The educators honored Monday teach in 11 school districts, one at a public charter school and one teaches at a private school. Some are rising teachers while one of the honorees, Payson High School educator Sherry Heaps, has taught for 48 years. One of the honorees, Viewmont High School teacher Carly Maloney, also is the Utah State Board of Education’s 2024 Teacher of the Year.

Showing up for teachers

The gala, sponsored by the Robert H. and Katharine B. Garff Foundation, preceded the third annual Show up for Teachers conference on July 9 at Mountain America Exposition Center. The conference is an initiative of Utah first lady Abby Cox. Cox said it is impossible to understate how much teachers inspire their students and how that influence endures into adulthood.

“I promise you, you can name every one of your elementary school teachers and most of your middle school and high school teachers. They have an impact,” she said.

Parents love teachers “because they love our children,” Cox said. Teachers love their students even when their behavior is awful and it is admittedly harder to do, she said.

“I know you love them when they’re struggling. You love them when they succeed. It takes that love, it takes that ability to look past a student’s behavior, to look into their eyes ... and say, ‘I see something in you that you don’t see in yourself yet.’ You can inspire them to be something they didn’t know they could be and each and every day you are doing that,” Cox said.

Katharine Garff, a business leader, philanthropist and community advocate, said her sixth grade teacher, who was leading a class of 45 students, took the time to meet with each of them individually.

He asked Kathi about her goals and values, which she had never considered in a formal way.

She said she aspired to be honest, kind and forgiving, answers which she came up with on the fly because earlier that day, she and her brother had had a fight and her mother’s admonishment had included a lesson on the importance of telling the truth, being kind and forgiveness.

As for goals, Garff said two were of a personal nature and she opted not to share them with the gala attendees. The third was, “I want to graduate from a university,” said Garff.

Her teacher told her what was perhaps the most important thing any educator had shared with her up until that stage in her life, which was, “Kathi, I believe in you.”

Garff is an alumna of the University of Utah and went on to chair the Utah State Board of Education and serve on the Utah State Board of Regents, among other community and education-related service.

Gov. Cox thanks teachers

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox thanked the teachers for their life-changing efforts on behalf of students, which he experienced himself growing up in rural Utah.

When Cox’s parents divorced when he was 10, he thought that the world might be a better place without him.

But he had teachers who saw something in him that he did not see in himself “and that pulled me out of this, inspired me to do something different, that there was a greatness somewhere, that there was a mission out there, that there

was something good in this world for me to accomplish. I’m so grateful I stayed. I stayed because of people like you. So thank you for who you are. Thank you for what you represent and the way you represent us,” the governor said.

Cox noted that Utahns “live in a very special place at a very difficult time in our nation’s history,” referring to political polarization and culture wars.

“So, much of that’s been placed in the laps of our educators, completely and unfairly. You, together with our administrators, have often borne the worst of that,” he said.

Cox said his brother is a teacher and school counselor at North Sanpete High School. He teaches a concurrent enrollment class in literature for Snow College and a parent objected to one of the books the class was reading.

“There were meetings and angry letters to the editor. People showed up to try to get him fired and lots of other really good people showed up to thank him and show support for him. Those types of things are happening across the state and across the country. They happened in our past, and we’ve come through those difficult times, and I’m certain that we can again,” he said.

Cox lifted up this piece of good news: Utah ranked second to Massachusetts on Forbes Advisor’s top 10 states for education, which considers proficiency in certain subjects in fourth grade and eighth grade and ACT scores, among other metrics.

“I will tell you to most of the country, there is one state on that list that would surprise them, and it’s us, right? But it’s no surprise to the people in this room, and it’s not because of our system. It’s not because of our governor or legislature. Sometimes we make it in spite of those things. It’s because of you,” said Cox.

Show Up for Teachers: Why connecting with others matters Human connection expert tells attendees that novice teachers paired with a more experienced educator are more likely to remain in teaching

Utah’s first lady Abby Cox grew up in a family of 10 kids — eight girls, two boys — and 1½ bathrooms.

One summer, four of the girls got married. “I was not one of them, thankfully,” Cox said, during the opening session of the Show Up for Teachers conference on July 9 at the Mountain America Exposition Center in Sandy. The third annual conference, sponsored by the Clark and Christine Ivory Foundation, is part of Cox’s ongoing initiative on educator wellness.

Cox’s grandfather suggested simply giving each bride a sum of money that would have been spent on their reception “and just move on.”

Cox said her father swiftly dispatched the idea.

“He said, ‘There is an importance in community. There’s an importance in connection. ... It’s so critically important for the community to come together, to connect, to celebrate,’” whether that was sharing the joy of a wedding or supporting someone in their grief, she said.

Cox’s late father’s sensibilities about the importance of connection were spot on, according to a growing body of research. Social scientists and medical researchers are learning more and more about the importance of social connections in emotional well-being and physical health.

Even though teachers’ days are filled with connecting with students and the demands of their work, they can feel isolated in their classrooms, Cox said.

“Sometimes we don’t feel connected, maybe, to the other teachers in our building, maybe to the administrators. Maybe we don’t feel connected to our district, maybe we don’t feel connected to the policymakers,” she said.

When educators feel disconnected, their mental health and their effectiveness as teachers can suffer.

“Today is all about you. It’s all about how you make connections, how we together as a community, as an education community, as a state, as business leaders, come together to support you, to connect with you. We want to support you, connect with you, so that you have the power to connect with each other and connect with your students,” Cox said.

Thriving through connection Human connection expert Marisa G. Franco was the morning keynote speaker of the conference, titled “Thriving Through Connection.”

Franco, a University of Maryland professor, TED speaker and author of the bestselling book “Platonic: How The Science of Attachment Can Help You Make — and Keep — Friends,” said research shows the No. 1 thing that makes people happy is connection.

Franco learned this anecdotally after a bad breakup in her 20s.

She reached out to her friend Heather and suggested starting a group to meditate, cook and do yoga to help Franco heal.

the yoga. It was being in community with people that I loved and love me, regularly throughout the week. I realized that before, I took connection, I took community for granted,” she said.

Franco said she previously believed that only romantic love made her worthy. But what about the love from connected friendships?

She realized that those connections were like “gold under our feet that we often treat as concrete. We act like it’s trivial. We act like it’s extraneous, and it really hurts us, because research finds that the number one thing that makes us happy is connection,” she said.

Connection has a profound impact on physical health, too, Franco said.

“When we are connected, we release a hormone called oxytocin, which researchers also call the fountain of youth,” she said.

Yes, regular exercise and eating a healthy diet decreases risk of death but research shows a large social network is likewise effective.

“Mind blowing, right?” Franco said.

Unlike schoolchildren who forge connections and friendship readily, largely as a function of proximity and repeated unplanned interaction, adults seeking connection need to be more intentional and risk being showing their vulnerabilities.

“As adults, many of us no longer inhabit environments where connection just happens organically, and if we rely on the same set of assumptions that we use with your kids, then you’re going to end up lonely. According to the research, people that think friendship happens without effort are more likely to be lonely five years later, people that think friendship requires effort are less likely to be lonely five years later,” she said.

She continued, “When it comes to connection, don’t just wait for people to come to you. You are going to have to try.”

Gov. Cox speaks about belonging Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said he has become convinced that belonging is the most powerful urge on Earth right now.

“We are wired for connection. Everyone is desperate for belonging. We want it so badly that if we don’t find it, we seek it out in very unhealthy places and unhealthy ways,” he said.

Although social media platforms were created to help people connect, “now they’re designed for addiction,” Cox said.

Moreover, social media use increases anxiety and depression among youth and adults, the governor said.

“The social media companies have figured out how to get us addicted to our devices and to their social media, and

they’re starting younger and younger with our kids. Every design feature now is to get them addicted to this platform, to this algorithm, and it’s absolutely working,” he said.

At the same time, parents are increasingly wary of real world dangers, some to the point that they hesitate to allow their children to explore their own neighborhoods without intense supervision.

At the same time, in the virtual world, “they can see anything and everywhere, the worst of humanity all the time with no restrictions. That cannot happen. So here’s the thing we’re working on. We’re suing them. So we’ve got litigation. We’re legislating against those companies as well, and we’re handing our parents, our families, to understand the power, the terrible power of social media. ... The research is very clear. We have to get these phones out of our classroom here,” he said.

Many school districts are working on those restrictions and if more needs to happen, “we’ll do more working with the legislature.”

One conference attendee, Alyson Simkins, an academic adviser at the private Heritage Spark Academy, said she was grateful to Abby Cox for making educator wellness a priority.

For educators, balancing home and school life presents challenges, she said.

“So for me, it’s how do I manage my stress levels? How do I make sure that I’m not taking home my stress and taking it out on my family? How can I make sure that the things that I’m learning, I can share with my teachers and my co-workers, when they’re also struggling? So how can I be more supportive, things like that?” she said.

Shawn Walker, principal at Canyon School District’s Canyon View Elementary School, said he, too, was seeking new ways to support his faculty’s wellness.

“There’s a lot of turnover for teachers. The more I can do to help support teachers in having a healthy balance, being happy with themselves and just succeeding and thriving, the better our kids are going to be, the more they’re going to learn,” Walker said.

In addition to keynote addresses and plenary sessions, educators and school administrators could take part in a wide array of activities such as play pickleball, enjoy a foot or seated massage or indulge in a visit to the dirty soda bar.

Why Abby Cox ‘shows up’ for Utah teachers

Ask Utah’s first lady Abby Cox why she has invested considerable time and energy into a teacher wellness initiative, and she’ll talk about the more immediate benefit: a teacher who is able to bring their best self to the classroom.

But she also takes a long view. “For me, it’s just a passion to take care of our teachers, to make sure that they are treated like the professionals that are and that they have the resources and tools to stay in their jobs and do them well,” said Cox in an interview in advance of the third annual “Show Up for Teachers” conference.

Some 2,000 Utah educators attended the educator wellness conference at the Mountain America Exposition Center in Sandy. The conference, themed “Thriving Through Connection,” is sponsored by the Clark and Christine Ivory Foundation.

Teachers are surrounded by students from the morning bell sounds until the school day ends, leaving little time or opportunity to connect with their teaching peers and administrators. Even when they are fully engaged with students and their days are full, they can experience isolation, Cox said.

“We want to make sure that the teachers are getting those opportunities to connect with each other as colleagues, connect to the administration, and so that they’re creating an environment within the school that really is about collaboration and connection and lifting each other up,” she said.

After hearing about teachers’ need for connection, it became the impetus for this year’s conference theme, Cox said.

Marisa G. Franco, considered a leading expert in human connection, delivered the morning keynote address.

Franco, a University of Maryland professor, TED speaker and author of the best-selling book “Platonic: How The Science of Attachment Can Help You Make — and Keep — Friends,” has been a featured connection expert for The New York Times, The Telegraph and Vice.

Cox said she and her husband, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, have “a core group of really good friends that we count on, that we laugh with. It’s not transactional,” she said.

They are their friends who look out for them and “we look out for them. We celebrate, we mourn with them, you know, all the things that we do with friendships and how critically important that is. I think we’ve forgotten that, and we’ve gotten away from that (as a society) to the detriment of our mental health,” she said.

Cox said the conference will also provide opportunities for pampering, such as seated massage, but more importantly, it will offer instruction on how to manage a difficult classroom, which will help teachers concentrate on their teaching and curb their stress.

If a teacher has learned techniques that help students learn and connect with one another, the educator’s mental health is going to be so much better “as opposed to going in there and it’s out of control, and ‘I don’t feel like I’m getting anywhere. I don’t feel like I’m being successful with these

students. I can’t teach them academically because I can’t get in a place of learning, mental health wise,’” she said.

Deseret News Publisher Burke Olsen said Utah’s oldest media organization has a long history of celebrating the academic prowess of the Wasatch Front’s top high school seniors as well as Utah’s top-performing high school athletes with its All-Sports Awards and All-State team selections.

“For a long time, we’ve been great at recognizing young people, whether it’s our Sterling Scholar Program or recognizing athletes. We’re thrilled to be recognizing the teachers who make a difference in the lives of Sterling Scholars and athletes. So in some ways for us, this is overdue,” Olsen said.

The inaugural gala was well received by the educators who were recognized but also by those in their sphere of influence, Olsen said.

For Olsen, the best part was the look on the faces of the teachers as they were recognized at the gala and also the Show Up for Teachers conference.

“In both places, teachers were just thrilled that somebody was paying attention to them and looking for ways to recognize and enrich their lives,” he said.

Olsen said he was so moved by the educators’ enthusiasm and gratitude that he wrote to a teacher who had made a difference in his life.

“He was aware of me being the publisher of the Deseret News and had followed my career. It was so gratifying to know that not only did he remember my name, but he was interested in me today, like he was when I was in high school,” Olsen said.
