Perhaps nothing epitomizes the American West today better than a fast and curious venture called skijoring. Never heard of it? Few have. It fuses two cultures this part of the country is known for — rodeo and skiing — into an action sport that is catching on more every year.

It’s a mashup of “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” and “Life in the Fast Lane.”

The funny name is derived from the Norwegian word skikjøring, which means ski driving. Its roots go back hundreds of years to Scandinavians harnessing reindeer and strapping on Nordic skis to cross vast expanses of frozen tundra.

In the modern version, cowboys and cowgirls on horseback tow skiers (and snowboarders) holding a 30-foot-long rope hooked to the saddle over a snow-covered obstacle course at breakneck speed. The skier must navigate slalom gates, hit jumps, grab rings and make sweeping turns.

Reaching speeds of nearly 40 mph, it’s over in under 20 seconds for the fastest teams depending on the track. Let go of the rope — or crash — and it’s over a lot quicker.

More than two dozen skijoring races are held each winter in mostly Western states including Colorado, Montana, Ida-

ho, Wyoming and Utah as well as in Maine, Minnesota and Calgary, Canada. A competition in Heber City, Utah, this month drew record teams and crowds. It’s popular enough that there’s talk of it becoming at least an Olympic demonstration or exhibition sport, with some eyeing Salt Lake City, the International Olympic Committee’s preferred host for the 2034 Winter Games, as an ideal showcase.

For now, it’s a thrill sport with a little prize money and some hardware in the form of rodeo-style belt buckles for top teams.

A lot of things must go right in a skijoring race — and a lot of things can go wrong very quickly. Rope management is key. The best skiers work up and down the rope hand over hand, keeping it taut through the straightaways and allowing slack to make turns. It takes some cowboy grit and skiing flair to make a clean run.

“It’s just like, ‘Boom!’ you’re in it, and it happens so fast,” said Scott Hoover, a 38-year-old father of four young boys (all of whom have competed) who races in a red-and-blueplaid flannel shirt that reads “I Could Do This All Day” on the back.

“You feel a jerk of rope and you’re flying down the track way faster than you think you’re going to go. Then you’ve got big chunks of ice flying off the horse’s feet, flying past

Lifelong friends Brian Gardner and Joe Loveridge, who share a passion for horses and skiing, knew they had to organize a skijoring race in Utah after they came across the sport in Montana.

“Holy crap, this is really cool. We need to do this in Utah,” is how Loveridge recalled his first time seeing it. Says Gardner, “We thought, ‘Well, shoot. That’s skiing. That’s horses.

Both things we love.’ We thought we should put one together in Utah because there had never been one.”

Skijoring Utah, which they founded, staged its first race in 2017 at Soldier Hollow, the cross-country skiing venue for the 2002 Olympics. The two former members of the Sundance ski patrol called up all their skiing friends. They told all their cowboy friends to trailer up their horses. They wrangled 100 competitors. They sold tickets and were thrilled when 500 people showed up. Gardner said he’s not sure they intended it to grow, but it has.

A competition Loveridge and Gardner put on in Heber City in February drew the largest number of participants and spectators in its seven-year history. About 345 teams competed in divisions from novice to pro, with the top teams vying for $25,000 in cash along with the coveted belt buckle and other prizes, drawing 7,775 spectators over two days.

There’s even a lil buckaroo division for kids and a century division in which the combined age of the rider and skier must total at least 100. The Cowboy Channel, a network in over 42 million cable and satellite homes that carries Western and rodeo sports, streamed the race start to finish.

Fans flock to races

A Skijoring Utah competition has become a can’t-miss event for fans.

On the cold but sunny Saturday, spectators in Stetsons and beanies filled the bleachers at the Wasatch Event Center in Heber City, against a backdrop of majestic, snow-covered Mount Timpanogos. Country and rock music blared from speakers next to a giant video screen. A drone followed each team through the course.

Track-side tailgating with portable wood-burning fire pits, burgers on the grill, beer on ice and spirits in plastic cups rivaled any college football game. Women (and some men) in fur coats, glittery Western hats and fancy boots mingled in the crowd. Concession stands and food trucks did a brisk business. Vendors hawked everything from fine leather saddles to cool ski goggles along with Skijoring Utah merch.

Cole Barton, 28, and his friends have snagged a tailgating tent for the past four years. “You get more of an experience for this event,” he said. “It just sets the vibes. ... You’re getting sprayed with snow, you’re seeing the horses run right past you.”

She came across skijoring on social media four years ago.

The first time she raced, she rode so fast that she ripped the rope from her skier’s hands. For the Heber City event, she pulled a ski racing friend. “I called him and said, ‘Hey, I just heard of this sport. ... I got a race horse. You’re a ski racer.

Can I drag you?’”

And now millions of people are watching her on social media.

Frickel posts some of her skijoring exploits on TikTok, where she has more than 44,300 followers. One video has 2 million views, 264,000 likes and nearly 18,000 bookmarks.

Another has 1.2 million views and 161,700 likes. Wrote one follower among the more than 2,100 combined comments, “Please post more of these I’m BEGGING you.”

Urban skijoring

Salt Lake City got its first glimpse of skijoring earlier this month. Visit Salt Lake featured skiers and horses at its first winter sports, arts and culture festival downtown. Skijoring Utah put on an exhibition on a course on West Temple with snow trucked in from Big Cottonwood Canyon. At least a thousand people lined the street between Abravanel Hall and Nordstrom to catch the action.

Kaitlin Eskelson, Visit Salt Lake president and CEO, said event organizers wanted to bring in something “iconic that would shock and awe people.” They landed on skijoring and believe Salt Lake City is the biggest city to ever host the sport.

Among those on hand at the invitation of Visit Salt Lake was Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street. She has tried skijoring with friends in Idaho but has not competed.

Skiers use the same skills flying down a slalom or downhill course as they do being dragged behind a horse.

“You definitely have to be paying attention. You’ve got to know where you’re going. You’ve got to know the course.

The biggest difference is the horse and its pace because usually you have gravity pulling on you and that’s a little more predictable. That’s another element that changes it a bunch.

But pretty much everything you know as a skier comes over and applies,” she said.

Everyone has a story about how they got into skijoring.

Take Holland Howe, a petite 24-year-old Salt Lake City pediatric nurse who discovered the sport in her home state of Montana. She and her friends decided to give it a go at the National Finals Skijoring Races in Red Lodge. They had never skied behind a horse.

“I knew no one was going to come up to me and be like, ‘Yeah, you look like a fast kid,’ so I went up to the tallest cowboy I could find and I go, ’Hey, will you pull me? I’m a really good skier, do this all the time. He goes, ‘Oh, boy.’

That’s how we started.”

At the start line, the then-17-year-old Howe held the rope as the horse bucked in front of her.

“I almost peed my pants,” she said.

But Howe is all in, so much so that she skied in the Salt Lake City exhibition with a broken humerus, dislocated shoulder and torn labrum on her left arm and a broken scaphoid in her right hand, a bone that’s important for wrist motion and stability. She crashed skiing off a cliff at Snowbird. The public address announcer at the skijoring event joked that Howe’s parents didn’t know she was there. “Neither does my surgeon,” Howe added.

Gardner said the horses enjoy the race.

“You can feel it underneath you. They feel the energy of the crowd, they feel the music and they light up. I believe they’re competitors,” said Gardner, who pulled Loveridge through the Heber City course last weekend.

Luke Combs (and Tracy Chapman) might have a fast car but Marquise Young, 28, has a fast horse, several of them actually. She has never been on skis but started pulling skiers a couple of years ago. Not just pulling them, but pulling them to victory. Seems like every top skier wants to get behind her black appendix quarter horse Slim Shady.

“I like the environment,” Young said, referring to the mix of “crazy” horse people and skiers. “And obviously riding horses fast. ... It’s better than rodeo.”

Interestingly, many of the skiers and riders meet for the first time on the day of the race. A quick strategy session — something like go fast here, slow down there — might occur before they’re off and running.

Eighteen-year-old Karl Verhaaren admits he’s a little scared of horses. But he had no problem getting behind Slim Shady when he and Young met up on race day. “It’s notorious for being fast,” he said.

He grew up ski racing and freestyle skiing but gave skijoring a try four years ago and already sports a championship buckle under his hoodie.

“It’s definitely a learning curve at first just because it’s a weird mix of skiers, Western culture,” Verhaaren said. “It’s definitely a little weird to get used to.”

Gardner said it has been interesting to watch cowboys and skiers bond, though their backgrounds might be completely different.

“I think they share a common zest for life and a common enjoyment of getting outside and pushing the limits a little bit,” he said. “Even though they may not have been friends before, they end up leaving as friends. It’s kind of an unlikely place to team up.”

Ski driving’s Nordic roots

Skijoring wasn’t contemplated as a recreation or a sport.

It had more practical purposes. Arctic natives used dogs and reindeer to travel over the snow. In Norway, it provided a means for communication between villages. It was also used by the Norwegian military as a quick way to move soldiers and supplies. It spread to Europe with horses replacing reindeer in Switzerland and France. The sport found its way to North America in the early 1900s.

Equine skijoring appeared as a recreational activity in Lake Placid, New York, and a regular pastime at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival in Hanover, New Hampshire, according to Skijor International. As early as 1930, mountain towns like Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Steamboat Springs, Colorado, took up the sport, often running in pairs down main streets.

In 1928, skijoring was featured as an exhibition sport at the Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Riderless horses pulled skiers with ropes around an oval track. The Swiss swept the podium. But results were not included in the official Games report and the medals were not tallied in the overall count.

Westward ho

In the U.S., the sport has migrated west, with weekend races in mostly small towns in Colorado, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming from late December through early March.

Leadville, Colorado, has held skijoring races on its historic main drag, Harrison Avenue, since 1949. In Montana, the Red Lodge Ski-Joring Association has been hosting what it bills as tFhe national finals for skijoring races since 1980.

Even though there’s no organized race circuit, some skiers and riders travel from town to town each weekend to compete.

New York transplant Bryan Coll, now living in Park City, tried skijoring for the first time last winter in Leadville.

“After I finished my collegiate wrestling career, I decided I’m going to stick on the mountains and I’m pretty obsessed with it. Once I found out about this, it’s a real thrill and I haven’t looked back since,” said Coll, sporting snow rash above his lip from a crash.

Let’s get organized

While several states put on skijoring events, the sport is all over the map when it comes to courses and rules. Tracks vary from 600 feet to 1,000 feet long. They can be straight, U-shaped or L-shaped. Skiers may be allowed to team up with different riders in the same division. Event organizers don’t even agree on how to spell its odd-sounding name: It’s skijoring or ski-joring or ski joring depending on the locale.

Loren Zhimanskova, a Yale graduate who worked in sales and marketing for Ralph Lauren, was introduced to skijoring in McCoy, Colorado, a dozen years ago when a friend invited her to a local watering hole on a Friday night where skiers and riders teamed up over beers in what she called a “crazy dating game.”

“It was just fascinating to me,” she said.

Zhimanskova was “absolutely hooked” after seeing her first race. “The adrenaline rush, the beauty of seeing the horses run in snow, the rush of seeing a skier get launched right before your eyes, screaming past you.”

Since then, she has devoted herself to raising skijoring out of obscurity, both nationally and internationally. She chairs a New York-based alliance, Skijor USA, that is attempting to bring uniformity to the sport. It’s tough sledding among fiercely independent race organizers who don’t want to be governed or told how to run their events. She also launched Skijor International.

“It’s just an extraordinarily delicate subject and unfortunately a complicated process to get all of these races under

one umbrella,” said Zhimanskova, who splits her time between New York and Colorado.

Gardner and Loveridge in Utah aren’t big fans of having a sanctioning body govern the sport, though Gardner allows it’s a great question to ponder.

“I think that we are indifferent to that. We are fine operating our own independent event and having the rules be our rules and the way we want it to be. I could see the value if somebody were to start that. But I could also see some problems with that down the road,” he said.

Future Olympic sport?

Zhimanskova said she has national sponsors who want to invest in the sport but prefer to see it organized under one umbrella.

“I’ve been approached personally by quite a few companies that love the whole image of skijoring. They think that it’s perfect for their demographic. They’re up-and-coming companies that are looking to distinguish themselves against their more well-known competition. So they’re a little edgy, they’re kind of outlaws and renegades but they’ve got money,” she said.

Zhimanskova believes there has to be a federation or coalition for skijoring to have any shot at the Olympics, even as an exhibition demonstration sport. She doubts it will ever be a medal sport. More realistic, she said, would be for it to be part of a torch relay or festival surrounding a Winter Games, especially in a place like Salt Lake City.

“I’m trying to use my experience to grow skijoring without it losing its integrity,” she said. “But at the same time, I’m doing my best kind of being a politician of sorts to say to people you need to start thinking outside the box.”

Regardless, she sees skijoring as an evolution.

“I think it’s a really fun journey to be on,” Zhimanskova said. “Every year I never know where it’s going to go.”

Hunting Utah’s biggest bully — social media Aimee Winder Newton is the lead in the governor’s Social Harms Campaign

At first glance, Aimee Winder Newton does not come across as someone you’d imagine crossing the schoolyard to punch the bully in the face. Or at second glance.

But underneath that pleasant, non-threatening exterior beats the heart of a person who is hunting the biggest bully out there.

Namely, social media.

Aimee is the lead person behind the governor’s Social Harms Campaign (socialharms.utah.gov) that has been underway since last fall. The goal of the campaign isn’t to get kids to engage less with social media. The goal is to get them to not engage at all.

Why? “Oh, there are so many reasons,” says Aimee, who proceeds to rattle off alarming statistic after alarming statistic: • 64 percent of kids surveyed who use social media say they have been exposed to online hate.

• 60 percent of teen girls report being contacted on social media by a stranger in ways that made them feel uncomfortable.

• 57 percent of teen girls report feeling persistently sad or hopeless.

• 50 percent of teens say social media makes them feel worse about their body image.

• 18 percent of Utah youth report seriously considering suicide in the past year.

• Rates of major depression for teens have doubled in the last ten years. (These statistics are from the office of U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, who has said,

“We are in the middle of a national youth mental health crisis and I am concerned that social media is an important driver of that crisis.”)

It’s true, Aimee concedes, that a few kids can use YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok and all the rest and remain unscathed, but the odds are about the same as understanding trigonometry on the first try.

Giving kids carte blanche access to social media is not unlike doing away with a minimum drinking age, or smoking age, or marriage age, or driving the car age.

Their brains need enough years to mature and make it even close to a fair fight.

And yet, while 88 percent of parents surveyed say they think social media is detrimental to their kids, 76 percent of their kids still have it on their phones.

“We hope that by the time the campaign finishes that parents unequivocally understand that social media is dangerous and they’ll delay giving their kids a phone that has social media on it,” says Aimee. “It’s hard. So many of the parents say they don’t want their kid to feel left out. What we need are enough parents to start taking it away so that it becomes normal to not have social media instead of the other way around.”

Aimee’s boss, Utah Governor Spencer Cox — a man who has been vocal about not allowing his teenage daughter to access social media — came up with the idea for the Social Harms Campaign.

“It was the governor’s inspiration and his vision and I’m helping to implement it,” says Aimee, who also serves as a senior adviser to the governor and director of the newly cre-

ated Office of Families.

“We hear so many stories from families who have struggled with this,” she says, “the thinking was that social media would help us with connections, but when people are switching out real life interactions for just social media online it’s making them lonelier, it’s affecting bodily image. Some girls think they look terrible unless they have a filter on for a picture — they don’t like how they look in a regular mirror. Teen girls around the age of puberty are affected the most.”

Sleep, or lack thereof, is another concern. “We’ve found that only 38 percent of kids are getting eight hours on a school night; the amount of time they’re spending on their phones is an issue.”

Funded by the state legislature, the Department of Commerce, and the Department of Health and Human Services, the Social Harms Campaign uses billboards, TV and radio ads, movie theaters, podcasts, websites and other digital mediums to spread the word — in both English and Spanish.

The campaign is in agreement with, but not part of, the legislative bills currently making their way through the system that would put legal restraints on social media companies targeting children without parental consent. Laws the social media companies are fighting against tooth and nail.

“I feel so grateful that I get to push back against a bully that I feel is so impactful to children in Utah and that bully is social media companies,” says Aimee. “They are a faceless bully that is putting children in harm’s way.

“We hope to save thousands of kids, but we need parents to be part of it. The kids aren’t going to do it on their own.”

Rewritten Should Hollywood tell us how to think about our own history? the biblical conquest of Jericho and the Trojan War depicted in Homer’s epic poems. “The Iliad” and “The Odyssey” were probably written during the eighth century B.C.E., about 400 years after the fact, but their narratives still resonate today, although the details are largely fictitious.

We still devour historical fiction in any form, from Shakespeare’s plays to the Vietnam War novels of Tim O’Brien and Broadway’s “Hamilton,” created by Lin-Manuel Miranda. “Historical fiction comes out of greed for experience,” observed historical novelist Hilary Mantel. “Violent curiosity drives us on, takes us far from our time, far from our shore, and often beyond our compass.”

On the other hand, our modern conception of the historian likely dates to the fifth century B.C.E., when Herodotus undertook the field’s first systematic investigation. In researching “The Histories” — from the Greek for “inquiries” — he set out to chronicle the Greco-Persian Wars, and the geographic and cultural reasons they were fought. In his own words, he wrote “so the memory of the past may not be blotted out from among men by time, and that great and marvelous deeds done by Greeks and foreigners and especially the reason why they warred against each other may not lack renown.” Critics later accused him of publishing poetic “fables,” but that only cements his place as the father of history. On screen, a gray-haired tribal elder leads a mournful chant, raising a pipe toward the open chimney of a domeshaped Osage lodge. “The children outside listening, they will learn another language,” he says, via subtitles. “They will learn new ways and will not know our ways.” Others sob as a woman cradles the pipe, now bundled, as if it was a dead child. They follow her outside to bury the bundle in a green field, but the ritual is interrupted by rumbling from the earth. A black spout erupts. Oil speckles the chests of young men who start to dance. A guitar riff flags “Killers of the Flower Moon” as a modern and original film, but these characters seem quite aware of their place in history.

The discovery of oil in 1894 made the Osage the “richest people per capita on Earth,” after seven decades of hardship on reservations in Kansas and Oklahoma. A newsreel-style montage shows them playing golf in tailored clothes, attending stately schools and riding in Pierce Arrow limousines. A black steam engine huffs into the frame, stopping at a frontier railway station. Well-heeled Osage families spill from the train beside rough-hewn white men wearing Stetson hats and bandanas around their necks. These images signal that this is a Western, a tale of cowboys and Indians, but not like the viewer is used to.

The film follows an outlier clad in olive drab. Ernest Burkhart, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, is a World War I veteran coming to work on his uncle’s cattle ranch. Viewers watch him develop ties on both sides of a growing conflict, raising a family and navigating a grisly caper. Director Martin Scorsese, a mafia movie virtuoso, purports to illuminate a dark corner of American history by faithfully portraying

these events as documented in the eponymous book by journalist David Grann, citing an assist from members of the Osage Nation. But he also aims to upend the way Americans view their own history.

People love historical epics. Just browse this year’s Academy Awards nominations. “The Zone of Interest” follows an Auschwitz commandant home during the Holocaust. “Oppenheimer” explores the moral implications of the atom bomb through the man who ushered it into existence. “Maestro” studies the life of Leonard Bernstein, the great 20th century composer. “Golda” portrays Israeli prime minister Golda Meir through the Yom Kippur War. And “Napoleon” gives the French emperor the blockbuster treatment, centered on his imagined romantic life. Each has been nominated in at least one category and has enjoyed varying degrees of commercial success.

Scorsese, whose best director nod is one of the film’s 10 nominations, has grander ambitions for “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

He intends to “correct” the historical record — especially Hollywood’s demeaning portrayals of Native Americans — and ask viewers to reimagine America’s westward expansion through the lens of a true crime saga, the dispossession of one last tribe amid the Old West’s dying embers. He largely does this with one simple maneuver: choosing a story where cowboys are not the good guys. This essay is not an endorsement of that film, but an exploration of his project and what it means to argue about the past.

This isn’t exactly new. We’ve been fascinated with history for longer than we can remember.

New research shows that native Tasmanians still share oral histories that originated at least 12,000 years ago. Once writing systems developed in early Egypt, Mesopotamia and Sumeria, around 3,500 B.C.E., those civilizations started keeping chronological annals. Sanskrit tales of wars and deities arose in the Indus River valley by the late Bronze Age, roughly concurrent with

What we learn in school is history for children, often presented as an undisputed sequence of events tracking the march of progress through the accomplishments of great men and women. But the practice of history — more specifically, historiography, which is the writing of history — is one of exploration, making sense of what happened using the best available evidence, but also searching for better data and questioning underlying assumptions. Sometimes, this can make us uncomfortable, or undermine a deeply held narrative, eliciting accusations of “political revisionism.”

Certainly, history can be a powerful political tool. As George Orwell wrote in “1984,” the classic dystopian novel: “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.” But some revisions stem from societal change.

12 DESERET NEWS | APRIL 2024 Demographic shifts have encouraged historians to explore the historical perspectives of women and diverse ethnic and socio-economic groups. Rather than study monarchs, wars and plagues, historians today often focus on the lives of the poor, oppressed and vanquished, searching for untold stories and surprising points of view.

These evolutions may feel refreshing to some, even empowering; to others, they can feel like a threat. History is essential context, forming the intellectual landscape we navigate. For much of our history, “mainstream” Americans shared a common understanding of both the factual record and what it meant. In today’s fractured world, that kind of surety sounds like a distant dream, or perhaps a limited experience that not all could share.

Still, when narratives that have shaped our inner lives are torn down, it can feel as disorienting as walking around a city where familiar and emblematic buildings have been replaced with stucco apartments.

Burkhart drives an early automobile, flirting over his shoulder with his passenger, Mollie Kyle. Played by Lily Gladstone, the first Native American actress nominated for an Oscar, she seems skeptical as he playfully probes her defenses. When she lashes out in her mother tongue, he charmingly assumes it was “Indian for handsome devil.” She doesn’t see him out at night with his friends, robbing “rich Indians” at gunpoint and gambling away the take, but she distrusts his uncle — who calls himself “king of the Osage hills” — and senses ulterior motives. “Coyote wants money,” she tells him.

This sequence overturns an old Hollywood trope that was not based in fact. The “squaw” (now deemed an ethnic and sexual slur) was a wife-like figure, but powerless, submissive, typically silent and often treated as property. In reality, women had different roles from tribe to tribe. Some were focused on domestic life; some became spiritual leaders; and in some matriarchal cultures, they made the decisions. These nuances were not available to the makers of early Westerns. But here, Kyle wields her own power as an heir to oil money, while her Catholic school education far outstrips Burkhart’s limited literacy. More importantly, she is a three-dimensional character, which is sadly still a novelty in the genre.

It’s unclear whether the flattening of Native American characters was driven more by lack of information or the market of viewers, but it’s interesting to note that some early films took

a different approach. “The Squaw Man,” from 1914, tells a tragic tale of star-crossed love between the daughter of a Ute chief and an upper-class English rogue. In 1930’s “The Silent Enemy,” members of the Ojibwe tribe — played by Native American actors — struggle to survive a famine. But that changed in 1939, when a film set in southern Utah invented the Western as we’ve known it.

That’s when John Wayne first rode across Monument Valley in “Stagecoach,” directed by John Ford. As the Ringo Kid, an outlaw with a heart of gold, Wayne helps a group of naive travelers to survive a trek across dangerous Apache country, with comic relief from Andy Devine. The Apaches appear as little more than a natural menace, about as thoughtful as wolves or a tornado.

The movie holds up as a work of cinematic art, but its success spawned or advanced harmful cliches that persist today. Ojibwe critic Jesse Wente has called it “the most damaging movie for native people in history.”

The “Hollywood Indian” became a staple on movie sets, wearing feathers, beads, warpaint and leather britches. Personas varied, from muted stoics like Tonto in “The Lone Ranger” to nihilistic brutes hell-bent on violence, represented by hundreds of nameless characters shot dead in the attempt. A few sympathetic or respectable exceptions were played by Mexican actors, like Anthony Quinn and Ricardo Montalbán, or white actors in redface, from Burt Lancaster to Burt Reynolds and Elvis Presley.

As if real-live Native Americans had ceased to exist, leaving only “Stagecoach” as a record of their passing.

These tropes appealed to many Americans and it’s worth understanding why, beyond blaming racism. The prototypical Western plot follows an everyman type who struggles against forces of savagery or greed to find a home, a sanctuary in a violent wilderness that is slowly being civilized through the perseverance of his people. Versions of that tale exist in many of our family histories, told from a familiar viewpoint. The archetype argues that westward expansion was benevolent and just, so any violence perpetrated in its service was justified. It allows us to see ourselves as would-be heroes, even if our ancestors were simple dirt farmers.

It’s less comforting to watch Burkhart plot with his uncle, “King” William Hale, played by Robert De Niro, to steal Osage land and the petroleum beneath it through a scheme of marriage and murder.

Gathered in a large wooden lodge worthy of the tribe’s wealth, Osage leaders discuss a spate of murders, unaware that the man directing them sits in their circle. One blames white opportunists who are “like buzzards circling our people” who “wanna pick us body clean, leave nothing.” A reward has been posted and Mollie — now married to Ernest — confirms that she has hired a private investigator. Hale volunteers a $1,000 donation to help the effort. He doesn’t mention that the killers are working for him, following his orders. “Your friendship has always been greatly appreciated,” the chief tells him.

This ongoing deceit and violent chicanery offer a microcosm

of our national myth from a different point of view, standing in for the broken treaties, smallpox blankets and bloody massacres that made Manifest Destiny a reality on the ground. “It’s like lifting up the lid and saying, ‘This is your American history. This is what you didn’t learn in school,’” said film critic Richard Brody during a New Yorker Q&A. “‘This is what our society now is built on and doesn’t dare look in the face.’” Scorsese answered: “Exactly.”

Scorsese is one of the great directors, but he is not a historian.

He has made a litany of classic films, but how much credence should we put into his effort to change history? Is he right? Brenden Rensink, associate director of the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at BYU, suggests a different way to think about it. “Frontier histories can be told as triumphant American westward expansion or as foreign invasion,” he says. “Perspective matters.”

Rensink reminds us that “most art reflects contemporary concerns.” To understand a film like this, we should think about the context in which it was made, rather than the events it depicts.

In politics today, competing historical narratives are used to justify opposing sides in the Russia-Ukraine war and the conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. American politicians on the campaign trail still debate what led to the United States Civil War. If your head is spinning now, maybe it should be. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting another point of view, even if it’s not particularly scholarly.

One reason narratives are so powerful is they allow us to experience something through the eyes of another. Even when that character is fictitious, this phenomenon can help us to practice or develop empathy. That said, Rensink cautions that entertainment is best as an entry point to any given topic. The next step requires effort on our part, engaging the material with critical thinking and historical context. “There’s nothing wrong with pop culture that simply entertains, but if it sneaks distorted historical narratives into our collective consciousness — like a Trojan horse — then it can actually cause damage.”

Steven Mintz, a historian at the University of Texas at Austin, thinks most people understand the distinction. “No one goes to a movie expecting a history lecture,” he says, referencing invented dialogue, composite characters, contrived episodes and the projection of current sensibilities onto past events. Still, an engaging narrative can help us to learn. “At their best, these films generate interest in the past and raise profound questions about morality, inevitability and the influence of character upon history, and prompt viewers to read more.”

Without giving away the plot, the Federal Bureau of Investigation eventually takes an interest in the Osage killings. Cases are brought to trial, hard questions are asked and answered to varying levels of satisfaction and certain characters are sentenced to lengthy prison terms. Then, abruptly, the camera cuts to Scorsese himself. In the role of an old-time radio narrator, he concludes by reading Mollie Kyle’s brief, real-life obituary, noting pointedly that “there was no mention of the murders.”

Since becoming President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January 2018, President Russell M. Nelson has announced locations for 153 temples, beginning with seven identified during the April 2018 general conference and on through the 20 locations announced in the concluding session of October 2023 general conference.

Of the 153 temples he has announced, the breakdown in current status — as of March 15 — is: • 11 temples dedicated • 7 temples scheduled for dedication • 41 temples under construction • 1 temple scheduled for groundbreaking • 20 temples with site locations identified and rendering published • 33 temples with site locations identified • 40 announced temples still in planning and design Below is a list of all 153 temples and each’s current status as of March 15, 2024 — from dedicated and operational to scheduled for dedication, from under construction to sched-

uled for groundbreaking, and from those with site locations announced and exterior renderings released to those still in planning and design. Also noted are temples that have been renamed from the original city locations as announced.

In the second general conference of his first year as President of the Church, President Nelson announced 12 new temple locations on Oct. 7, 2018, in the conference’s Sunday afternoon session. With those 12, he had announced 19 new temple locations in 2018.

As of March 15, 2024, four of the 12 temples have been dedicated and are operating, with two more scheduled for dedication. Five temples are under construction, with the remaining one having its site announced.

• Red Cliffs Utah Temple — Temple announced for Washington County, Utah, is St. George’s second and was given the Red Cliffs name. Scheduled for a March 24, 2024, dedication, with President Henry B. Eyring, second counselor in the First Presidency, to preside.

• Davao Philippines Temple — Under construction since its Nov. 14, 2020, groundbreaking.

• Mendoza Argentina Temple — Under construction since its Dec. 17, 2020, groundbreaking.

• Salvador Brazil Temple — Under construction since its Aug. 7, 2021, groundbreaking.

• Phnom Penh Cambodia Temple — Site location and exterior rendering were released by President Nelson on Nov. 19, 2019, in Phnom Penh as part of his Southeast Asia ministry. Under construction since its Sept. 18, 2021, groundbreaking.

• Puebla Mexico Temple — Scheduled for a May 19, 2024, dedication, with Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles to preside.

For the second general conference held in 2019, President Nelson announced eight new temple locations — this time with the Oct. 5 Saturday evening women’s session of general conference being the setting. The eight new temples made for 35 total temples that he had announced up to then.

As of March 15, 2024, three temples have been dedicated and are operating, two more are scheduled for their dedications, and the remaining three are in various stages of construction.

• Orem Utah Temple — Operating since its Jan. 21, 2024, dedication by Elder Christofferson.

• Taylorsville Utah Temple — Scheduled for a June 2, 2024, dedication, with Elder Gong to preside.

• Bentonville Arkansas Temple — Operating since its Sept.

17, 2023, dedication by Elder Bednar.

• Cobán Guatemala Temple — Scheduled for a June 2, 2024, dedication, with Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles to preside.

• McAllen Texas Temple — Operating since its Oct. 8, 2023, dedication by Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

• Bacolod Philippines Temple — Under construction since its Dec. 11, 2021, groundbreaking.

• Freetown Sierra Leone Temple — Under construction since its March 19, 2022, groundbreaking.

April 2020 general conference

For the third time in as many general conferences, President Nelson announced eight new temple locations, with the April 5, 2020, announcement returning to the Sunday afternoon closing session. Those eight increased President Nelson’s total of announced temples to 43.

As of March 15, 2024, five of the eight temples are under construction, one has a released site location, and the other two in planning and development.

October 2020 general conference

In his sixth general conference since becoming President of the Church, President Nelson announced six new temple locations on Oct. 4, 2020, in the final session of general conference, bringing the total of temples he had announced to 49.

As of March 15, 2024, three of the six are under construction, and the other three have site locations identified, one also with an exterior rendering released.

• Lindon Utah Temple — Under construction since its April 23, 2022, groundbreaking.

• Miraflores Guatemala City Guatemala Temple — Originally announced as a temple for Greater Guatemala City and renamed in July 2022, it has been under construction since its Dec. 3, 2022, groundbreaking.

• Tarawa Kiribati Temple — Site location and exterior rendering were released on May 19, 2021.

• Port Vila Vanuatu Temple — Under construction since its April 8, 2023, groundbreaking.

• São Paulo East Brazil Temple — Site location was announced Oct. 31, 2022 • Santa Cruz Bolivia Temple — Site location was released Nov. 28, 2022.

April 2021 general conference

April 2019 general conference

On April 7, 2019, President Nelson closed general conference for the third straight time by announcing new temples — eight, giving him 27 total that he had personally announced to that point.

As of March 15, 2024, two of the eight temples announced in April 2019 have been dedicated and are operating. Five temples are under construction, and the eighth temple has a site location.

• San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple — Under construction since its Sept. 5, 2020, groundbreaking.

• Moses Lake Washington Temple — Operating since its Sept. 17, 2023, dedication by Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

• Antofagasta Chile Temple — Under construction since its Nov. 27, 2020, groundbreaking.

• Okinawa Japan Temple — Temple name simplified after location was announced for Okinawa City, Okinawa. Operating since its Nov. 12, 2023, dedication by Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

• Deseret Peak Utah Temple — Temple renamed after its originally announced Tooele Valley location. Under construction since its May 15, 2021, groundbreaking.

The announcement made for 70 temples announced by the President of the Church since the January 2018 start of his tenure.

October 2021 general conference

New temple announcements returned to general conference, with President Nelson’s Oct. 2, 2021, announcement of 13 temples coming in the Sunday afternoon session of general conference. The announcement increased the total temples announced by President Nelson to 83.

In the closing moments of Sunday afternoon session of April 2023 general conference on April 2, President Nelson announced the locations of 15 new temples. That put the total number of temples announced by President Nelson in five years at 133.

The Church’s efforts to improve nutrition for women and children, one by one The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints prioritizes the health and well-being of women and children around the world through multiple ways Member-focused efforts to improve child nutrition

As Relief Society General President Camille N. Johnson participated in a malnutrition screening for children in Manila, Philippines, she saw parents receive support, get connected to community resources and learn about proper nutrition for their children.

“There is nothing more gratifying than having the opportunity to work on and participate in an event like this where we’re bringing temporal and, frankly, spiritual relief to our loved ones, our brothers and sisters around the world,” President Johnson said.

Medical volunteers took measurements of each child and provided counseling. Mothers received personal attention and focus. Families learned about wasting, stunting and other health issues — and what to do about it.

Similar screenings have taken place in multiple countries around the world. They are part of a global effort from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to improve the health and development of children under 5 and their mothers by reducing malnutrition and promoting healthy eating.

“We look at a problem at a global level and we say we know we have children who are malnourished … but the way we are going to address that challenge is one by one,” Pres-

ident Johnson said.

In the scriptures, the Savior gives the commandment to care for women and children (see for example Exodus: 22:22-24; Doctrine and Covenants 83:2, 4; Mosiah 4:14; Mark 9:36-37 and Matthew 18:14).

The Church believes that prioritizing the care of women and children blesses not only those who receive aid but also their families and communities.

The Church strives to improve nutrition through: Family Empowerment: Families work to improve their children’s nutrition. Local Church councils and ministering brothers and sisters assist families with knowledge, resources and support to implement nutritional best practices in their own homes.

Community Assistance: Church support at the community level is led by area leadership who know the needs and resources of their communities best, connecting the local community to resources in their area.

Global Support: The Church work with humanitarian organizations to provide global support to prevent and eliminate child malnutrition from conception to age five.

“No humanitarian effort is more foundational to Christ’s Church than feeding the hungry. ... As we serve together, we extend the reach of Christ’s loving arms,” President Johnson said.

Because child malnutrition is common worldwide, it affects children of the Church as well.

An objective to alleviate malnutrition and improve health for all member children under age 5 is being done through: • Teaching stake/district councils and Relief Society leaders to identify malnutrition through proper screening.

• Providing proper treatment through nutritional supplementation, education, immunizations and other health care services.

• Educating families on follow-up care, with the help of ministering brothers and sisters.

Church buildings are used as a safe, central place for screenings.

Sister J. Anette Dennis, first counselor in the Relief Society general presidency, said in instances involving Latter-day Saints, the entire congregation is being brought together.

“We see Relief Society sisters caring for their neighbors.

We see young people helping. Not only are young adults helping, but they’ll be better prepared, as they become parents, to one day help their own children,” Sister Dennis said.

Said Sister Kristin M. Yee, second counselor in the Relief Society general presidency, “Relief Society sisters are already nurturing others in their homes and communities.

Even if they aren’t directly involved [in this effort], they’re part of a global sisterhood that is making a difference in people’s lives.”

Collaborating with global organizations for childhood nutrition During an October 2022 general conference address titled “Helping the Poor and Distressed,” President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the First Presidency, said that the Church of Jesus Christ is committed to serving those in need, and it is also committed to cooperating with others in that effort.

“While each humanitarian organization has its own areas of specialization, we share the common goal of relieving suffering among God’s children,” he said.

The Church strives to care for those in need by engaging in humanitarian efforts with the greatest possible impact — and supporting charitable and government organizations with similar goals to identify opportunities for collaboration on key areas of need.

In some cases, the Church makes contributions to provide immediate food assistance, while in other instances the Church gives support to self-reliance projects that improve a family’s ability to provide for themselves.

In addition, the World Food Programme was able to build long-term resilience and self-reliance by educating parents about nutrition and helping communities develop sustainable farming to address food scarcity and support nutritious diets.

In Liberia, the World Food Programme — with Church funding — has supported several smallholder farmers cooperatives to become self-reliant, and provided a garden and hot meals for an elementary school. While in Kenya, children received nutrient-rich foods and pregnant and breastfeeding mothers were blessed by a highly fortified porridge.

A service day on Feb. 8 at the Bishops’ Central Storehouse in Salt Lake City celebrated 10 years of collaboration between the Church and World Food Programme.

Barron Segar, president and CEO of the World Food Program USA, thanked the Church for contributing their volunteers and resources to bless countless lives. He could not think of another organization on the planet that over the last 10 years has impacted 6 million lives in 46 different countries.

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is our most important partner. ... Fewer people are hungry today because of the Church and the World Food Programme,” he said.

In the Philippines, the Church donated to Caritas Manila, a nonprofit organization from the Catholic Church in the country. The support is helping provide six months of daily supplemental meals, vitamins and hygiene items for over 1,000 children in different parts of metro Manila The Church has also supported UNICEF’s “No Time To Waste” global malnutrition campaign with materials to assist with the prevention, detection and treatment of wasting and other forms of malnutrition in multiple countries.

And in August 2023, the Church announced a donation of a combined $44 million to multiple charitable organizations

to promote childhood nutrition in 30 countries. The funding was expected to help an estimated 2 million mothers and children impacted by food insecurity.

Other efforts that bless women and children

Besides a focus on nutrition, the Church also works to bless women and children through maternal and newborn care, immunizations and education worldwide.

By providing training, medical equipment, and education for new mothers, the Church works to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates while providing better care for mothers and their babies.

The Church is currently supporting Save the Children in a five-year effort to address infant growth failure in eight countries.

The program looks at the factors that influence negative outcomes for young babies, including maternal nutrition and poor care before and after birth. And the effort provides fundamental services including community screening, early identification of high-risk pregnancies, improved maternal nutrition and quality newborn care through water, sanitation and hygiene support.

Church medical volunteers join with local networks to provide neonatal and maternal care training called “Helping Babies Breathe” in several countries. This training for midwives directly addresses infant mortality.

In the Kurdistan region of Iraq, the Church has collaborated with local government and community organizations to support the Nursing Midwifery and Development Center.

This project provides training and support for nurses and midwives, thereby reducing infant and maternal mortality rates in the area.
