Chrysler: 200 Overview: Chrysler’s arranged marriage to Fiat has produced a stylish successor to the previous Chrysler Sebringbased 200 sedan.

Drivetrains: New base four-cylinder makes 184 horsepower; an optional V6 ups the output to 295; Nine-speed automatic is connected to both powerplants; AWD is optional with the V6.

The 200 competes in the high-volume mid-size bracket that’s the bread, butter and jam for Toyota, Ford, Honda, Hyundai et al. There’s some roofline similarity with the Ford Fusion and a passing resemblance to the Dodge Dart (which shares the same basic platform). The interior features easy-to-view primary gauges, plus-sized control knobs and optional 8.4-inch touch-screen display (a five-inch screen is the base unit). The floor shifter has been replaced by a console knob like the one in the Ram 500 pickup. Under the hood, a new 2.4-liter four-cylinder produces 184 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque. It connects to a nine-speed automatic transmission, as does the available 3.6-liter V6 that makes 295 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel-drive is available with the V6. In normal operating conditions the rear axle disconnects from the AWD system to cut parasitic power losses, which helps maximize fuel economy and likely saves wear and tear on various drivetrain components.

When road conditions are slippery, the rear wheels can receive as much as 60 percent of the engine’s torque. AWD is also permanently engaged when the driver selects Sport mode. Then throttle and transmission shift responses become sharper and the electronic stability control becomes less nanny-like. The starting-point 200 LX includes numerous poweroperated and comfort features plus keyless pushbutton start. The remaining Limited, S and C levels are where most buyers will likely shop since they include plenty of extras and are necessary for ordering the V6 and AWD. 2015 CHRYSLER 200

Dodge: Charger Overall: Dodge’s full-size four-door sedan looks more aggressively American than ever, especially when the SRT8 Hellcat’s 700-plus-horsepower engine is roaring.

Drivetrain: 3.6-liter V6 delivers up to 300 horsepower; the 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8’s 370 horses are unchanged; all-wheel-drive is available for all but the potent SRT8 Hellcat that brings a new supercharged 6.2-liter V8 with 707 horsepower to play; all models use improved eight-speed automatic transmissions.

Although no longer a member of NASCAR’s various racing series, perhaps Dodge will puts its latest Charger back into some stock-oriented division with the National Hot Rod Assn. (NHRA)? Why? Because the NHRA confirmed that the new 2015 Charger SRT8 Hellcat can do the standing quarter-mile in 11 seconds flat and on street tires. Beyond the revised suspension, new wheels and more-aggressive body bits, the Hellcat’s most important part is under its hood. The “normal” 470-horsepower 6.4-liter Hemi is plenty good, but for the Hellcat it has been replaced by a 6.2-liter V8 that’s augmented by a big ol’ supercharger. Final tallies of 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque mean the Charger SRT8 is the most powerful factory-built sedan and the fastest as well, topping out at 204 mph. The large 20-inch wheels with 15.4-inch Brembo brake rotors means it stops nearly as well as it accelerates, doing the zero-to-100-0-to-zero test in a supercar-rivaling sub-13-second time. Amazingly, the Hellcat uses the same eight-speed automatic as the other engines, although bulked up to handle twice the power. Those other engines carry over from before: the base 3.6-liter V6 still has 300 horsepower and it achieves 19 mpg in the city and 31 highway (up from 18/27). The 370-horsepower 5.7-liter V8 installed as standard equipment in the Charger R/T should drink less fuel than before, but final numbers are hard to come by. Both engines can be equipped with all-wheel-drive with its active transfer case with front-axle disconnect. To save fuel, the system unlocks the front wheels from the transfer case when they’re not needed and will automatically and seamlessly reconnect the front wheels when rear-tire slip is detected. The 5.7 also tries to temper the engine’s thirst for fuel by cutting off half the cylinders at idle and during low-load cruising. Aside from the Hellcat engine, nearly everything on the outside has been changed or replaced, including the mean face with LED fog lamps, grille, hood and trunk. The interior sees a completely new steering wheel, dash, gauge cluster and better materials all around. For additional rumbling noises, you can select the Beats by Dr. Dre audio package. The Rap artist helped tune the optional 10-speaker sound system to complement the Charger’s interior and the musical tastes of its generally more youthful passengers.

Jeep: Renegade Overview: And now for something completely different: an Italian-American 4x4 that takes Jeep’s off-roading expertise into the small zone.

Drivetrain: Turbocharged and non-turbocharged four-cylinder engines as well as six-speed manual and nine-speed automatic transmissions; Fourwheel-drive optional with either engine.

The Renegade is the smallest of Jeep’s sport utes, and by a long shot. It was designed here, but it’s being built at a Fiat plant in Italy and sold in more than 100 countries. The front and rear body overhangs are practically non-existent (perfect for off-roading) and there’s plenty of space between the tires and the fenders. The vehicle’s narrow width does place a premium on elbowroom, but the dash and control panel are well laid-out, the oversized knobs are clearly marked and the meaty steering wheel closely replicates what you’ll find in the larger Grand Cherokee. Base Renegades run with a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The non-turbo 2.4-liter option puts out 184 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. The 1.4 turbo comes with a six-speed manual transmission, while the 2.4 is matched to a nine-speed automatic. Front-wheeldrive is standard on all but the top-line 4x4 Trailhawk, while Active Drive four-wheel-drive is optional. The system’s Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud modes are augmented by an exclusive Rock setting for the Trailhawk. Additionally, the Trailhawk comes with a low-range 20:1 crawl-ratio gearing, unique wheels with all-terrain tires plus other off-road goodies.

Renegades equipped with either drivetrain should prove reasonably thrifty with just 3,000-3,500 pounds to move around.

A gas-saving automatic axle disconnect feature for 4x4 models will reengage the rear wheels when maximum traction is required. The base Renegade Sport includes only the bare essentials, while the Latitude adds air conditioning, roof rails, fog lights and touch-screen audio and hands-free Bluetooth communications controls. Buyers of the “Limited” model get dual-zone climate control, heated leather-trimmed seats (including eight-way power driver’s seat) and 18-inch wheels (16- and 17-inchers come on lower trims). The optional MySky dual glass roof panels can be removed to maximize the open-air experience.

Ram: 1500 Overall: Ram offers the most attractive and clever touches in the light-duty class, and the most options under the hood as well.

Drivetrain: Chrysler’s 3.6-liter V6 and 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8 is joined by 3.0-liter “EcoDiesel” V6; eight-speed automatic transmission and other countermeasures help Ram reduce fuel consumption to respectable levels.

Who would have guessed that the macho Ram 1500 would ever trumpet its fuel performance?

That was partially addressed when Chrysler’s everpopular 3.6-liter V6 found its way into the engine bay. With 305 horsepower and 18 mpg in the city and 25 highway, it was a sweet combination. Its eight-speed automatic transmission also helped and it can now also be attached to the 395-horsepower 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8. The big engine can shut down four of its eight cylinders when not needed, such as at under light-load conditions or when heading downhill. The most unique engine is the optional 3.0-liter “EcoDiesel” V6, which makes the Ram 1500 the only light-duty diesel pickup in North America. Using the same figures as for the Jeep Grand Cherokee -- 240 horsepower and 420 pound feet of torque -- with the eight-speed automatic, it can tow 9,200 pounds. The regular V6 can tug 7,450 pounds. Rams get further fuel-reduction assistance with stop-start technology that turns off the engine at rest, then instantly fires it up again once the brake pedal is released. Electric power steering cuts parasitic power losses. Optional is an air suspension with load leveling and five height settings, one of which lowers the body at highway speeds by 0.6 inches to cut the wind a bit better. Finally, a “thermal management system” is designed to quickly get the Ram’s crankcase oil and other fluids up to operational temperatures, which assists in conserving gas. As for body styles, regular-cab models are available with a six-foot, four-inch box, or an eight-footer, while Quad Cabs get the shorter box only. The larger four-door Ram Crew gets you a 5’7” bed, or the six-foot, four-inch bed option. There are also available locking storage compartments built into the rear fenders that can each hold up to 120 12-ounce cans that can be specified with centrally controlled power locks. When it comes to four-wheel-drive, buyers can choose between a part-time system and an on-demand setup that automatically engages when road conditions warrant. Other neat touches for include a capless fuel-filler system and a front-park assist that’ll parallel park the “Beast” into incredibly tight spots.

Overview: Hyundai’s bread-and-butter family sedan doffs its trendy duds and sharp creases for more formal attire.

Drivetrain: A trio of four-cylinder engines is geared for fuel economy; Six-speed automatic transmission and an automated manual for the turbocharged “Eco” model.

When the previous Hyundai Sonata arrived for the 2011 model year, its creators devised a coupe-like shape along with a bold grille and headlight treatment. This time around, the Sonata is toned down in looks and shares a physical affiliation with the bigger 2015 Genesis sedan. The interior receives a new dashboard and control panel including an integrated display screen and numerous, but logically positioned, pushbuttons with fewer twisty knobs. What has also been reduced is the output generated by the Sonata’s two returning engines. The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder now makes 185 horsepower, down from the 2014 version’s 200 horsepower. Similarly, the optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is rated at 245 horsepower (previously 274 horses). In each case, a six-speed automatic transmission directs power to the front wheels.

Slotted between those two choices, and exclusive to the new Sonata Eco model, is a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder that produces 177 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. That engine connects to a seven-speed automated manual transmission that promises rapid-fire electronically activated upshifts. Note that the gas-electric Sonata Hybrid will be reissued sometime in calendar year 2015 as a 2016 model. The Sport gets its own grille and front bumper and added rocker-panel and chrome side moldings, but to move up to 18-inch wheels (16-inchers are standard on base cars and 17s are standard on Sport and Limited) you’ll need to order the Sport 2.0T. Both it and the Limited steal the content show with luxury-class amenities such as dual-zone climate control and leather seat coverings. A panorama sunroof is optional, as are a number of popular electronic safety intervention aids that can help keep passengers safe and the Sonata from receiving unwarranted body blows.

Hyundai:: Elantra Overall: A mild refresh for 2014 enhanced the sedan’s already attractive looks, which carries over for 2015; no significant changes for GT wagon, however the Coupe has been discontinued.

Drivetrain: A 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine is the mainstay for sedan, while a 2.0-liter four-cylinder is optional, but standard in the GT; six-speed manuals and automatics are available for both.

It has taken a while, but the Elantra has evolved over the past quarter-century to become one of the more popular compact sedans on the road. The spacious GT hatchback is arguably the better looker and is ideal for toting larger gear. That can’t be said for the Elantra coupe that, although sportier, clearly wasn’t a fan favorite since Hyundai decided to delete it for the 2015 model year.

The GT is slightly shorter overall than the sedan, but its expanded cargo area allows for 23 cubic-feet of room with the rear seats up (compared with 15 for the sedan) and more than 50 with them folded flat. Base sedans use a 1.8-liter fourcylinder engine that puts out 145 horsepower and 130 pound-feet of torque. It’s rated at 28 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway with the optional six-speed automatic. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder that’s rated at 173 horses and 166 poundfeet of torque is available in the sedan, but comes standard with the GT. The base Elantra sedan and GT include the usual power-operated assortment, a six-speaker audio system, air conditioning, cruise control and more. Stepping up to the Sport and Limited sedan trims add the 2.0 engine plus leather seats (heated in front and back), power sunroof, cruise control, power driver’s seat, pushbutton start and 17-inch wheels (16-inchers are standard). The option list includes keyless pushbutton start, automatic headlights, premium 360-watt sound package and a touch-screen navigation system with rearview camera. Both body styles can be had with optional items that include a navigation system, 360-watt premium sound system and dual-zone climate control.

Hyundai:: Accent Overall: For proof that small doesn’t mean cheap, look no further than Hyundai’s small sedan and hatchback models that are styling and content benchmarks for the sub-compact class.

Drivetrain: A 138-horsepower four-cylinder is standard for both body styles; choose from a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic.

Hyundai performed some kind of magic in creating the current-generation Accent by making both sedan and hatchback appear and drive larger than they actually are. In fact, it can be particularly difficult to spot the difference between the Accent and its compact Elantra sibling, even at close range. The sedan excels in passenger roominess, as does the hatchback, although the latter’s sweeping roofline, curvaceous liftgate make it the most practical Accent and arguably the best looking of the two. In terms of stowage, Hyundai claims the hatchback bests all comers with the second-row seat in the upright position (and that includes the Nissan Versa Note wagon). However the better-packaged new-for-2015 Honda Fit still enjoys significant space-race superiority when measuring maximum volume with the rear seat folded flat. The Accent’s 1.6-liter engine produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque and can be had with a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic. The base four-door GLS gets air conditioning, heated side mirrors, remote keyless entry, sixspeaker audio system and a full suite of safety gear. All of that content is included in the GS hatchback while the top-level SE hatch comes with side mirrors with integrated turn signals along with cruise control, premium seat covers, Bluetooth short-range wireless networking, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, fog lights and 16-inch alloy wheels (14-inch steel wheels are standard), while a power sunroof and a rearview camera are available extras. Leather seats and a navigation system are missing from the available-features list, indicating that Hyundai is keeping the Accent’s trim levels (and pricing) as close to the bone as possible.

Hyundai:: Tucson Overall: If Hyundai’s Santa Fe is too big or rich for your blood, the Tucson is a viable alternative; sharp styling inside and out plus decent power and fuel economy make it a popular pick.

Drivetrain: A 2.0-liter four-cylinder provides modest performance; an optional 2.4-liter four-cylinder delivers more punch; a six-speed automatic transmission is common to both and AWD is optional.

There’s no shortage of choices when considering the compact tall wagon class, with nearly every mainstream automaker producing at least one of this type. The five-passenger Tucson ranks right up there with the rest of the pack on price, performance and feature availability. The Tucson’s modest 2.0-liter four-cylinder is rated at 164 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque and comes standard in base models. You can also power up to an extra-cost 2.4-liter four-cylinder that makes 182 horses and 177 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are linked to six-speed automatic transmissions. The Tucson’s all-wheel-drive system that can be ordered with either powerplants comes with a number of offroader-type functions, including hill-start-assist and downhill-brake control for added stability on steep terrain. The Tucson runs the gamut, all the way from the affordable GL to the Limited model with big wheels, navigation, leather seating surfaces, dual sunroofs and a stereo that controls your Apple iPod and displays song selections on its screen. Aside from features, though, one of the most telling signs that you’re in a Limited is the smoother ride and reduced levels of road noise. The difference is quite dramatic, even though the vehicles look pretty much the same. Of course, you can count on Hyundai’s all encompassing, but non-transferable, 10-year powertrain and five-year comprehensive warranties to apply to the Tucson.

Subaru: Legacy Overview: A new challenger in the mid-size sedan league keeps an all-wheel-drive ace up its sleeve.

Drivetrains: Four- and six-cylinder engines return, each connected to a continuously variable transmission; AWD is standard, of course.

The Legacy has grown both in stature and size to become one of the most spacious mid-size four-doors on the market. It also matches the sedan-pack leaders in attractiveness. There’s plenty of new stuff inside the updated cabin, including a more modern dashboard and a more centrally located touch-screen display for the rearview camera and infotainment/navigation systems. The Legacy’s powerplants carry over from 2014, although the base 175-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder receives slight changes to make it a bit lighter, quieter and more fuel-efficient. It’s rated at 26 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway, compared with 24/32 for the previous 2.5. Those numbers are achieved with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that for 2015 is standard across the line, even for the optional 3.6-liter six-cylinder that makes 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. The standard all-wheel-drive system that comes with all Legacys has been augmented for 2015 with torque vectoring. The system applies light braking to the inside front wheel while turning to enhance steering control. The base Legacy 2.5i arrives with all the usual comfort and convenience features, while the 2.5i Premium adds dual-zone climate control, seven-inch touch-screen (up from 6.2 inches), power driver’s seat and 17-inch alloy wheels (16-inch steelies are standard). Pop for the 2.5i Premium and you get perforated-leather seats, power passenger seat, 576-watt Harmon/Kardon audio system and 18-inch wheels. The toprung 2.5i Limited and 3.6R Limited come with Subaru’s EyeSight suite of safety aids that includes Pre-Collision Braking that will slow or stop the Legacy if it’s determined that a rear-end smack-down is imminent.

Subaru: Outback Overview: Beneath the Outback’s suburban sheetmetal there’s a rock-climbing-capable off-roader.

Drivetrains: Four- and six-cylinder engines return, but connected to continuously variable transmissions, only; Standard all-wheel-drive is the Subaru way, of course.

During its 20-year history, Subaru’s plucky wagon has remained true to its roots, while undergoing continuous improvement. For the 2015 model year, the Legacy-sedan-based Outback receives a number of critical updates. Visually, the car appears similar to the outgoing version, although a revised grille, lightweight aluminum hood, reshaped headlights and door-mounted mirrors are evident. The upgrades continue inside, with a quieter cabin with a reshaped dashboard, larger front seats and a more cavernous floor console. The Outback’s suspension has been retuned and Subaru has added Active Torque Vectoring that applies slight brake pressure to the inside front wheel during a turn. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces a bit more peak horsepower (175 versus 173) and maintains the same torque rating of 174 pound-feet. The optional 3.6-liter six-cylinder continues to make 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet torque. Both engines are connected to continuously variable transmissions (four-cylinder Outbacks are no longer available with a five-speed manual). The CVT helps the 2.5-liter model achieve 25 mpg in the city and 35 on the highway, up from the previous 24/30 rating. The standard all-wheel-drive system has also been tuned for improved slippery-road performance. A new driver-controlled X-Mode adjusts the transmission and engine output plus the AWD system to reduce wheelspin. X-Mode also adds Hill Descent Control (keeps vehicle speed to a crawl), Incline Start Assist (briefly holds the vehicle when starting on hills) and a Hill Holder System that prevents the Outback from rolling backward when stopped, until the accelerator is pressed. When combined with the Outback’s 8.7-inch ground clearance, X-Mode makes the Outback more fit for rugged off-road duty.

Subaru: WRX STI Overall: All-wheel-drive and plucky turbocharged engines give these hot Subie sedans a big boost in the fun department.

Drivetrains: Subaru Forester-based WRX powerplant spools out 268 horsepower; STI takes it up a notch with carryover 305 horsepower four-cylinder; both operate through six-speed manual gearboxes but WRX has an optional continuously variable unit; all-wheel-drive standard.

Compact sedans appeal to a buyer’s practical nature. However with the WRX and the more potent WRX STI, the appeal includes lively powerplants, four-seasons driving competency plus sporty suspension and steering components that manage the snakiest of paved and unpaved roadways. Both 2015 WRX models shed their optional hatchback body styles. That’s surprising since hot hatches are currently all the rage. A new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the WRX produces 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the STI continues with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. The engines are “flat” with two banks of two pistons firing at 180 degrees to each other. Durable and with a low center of gravity, each horizontally opposed four-cylinder (H4) engine is connected to a six-speed manual transmission, while a continuously variable unit (CVT) with paddle shifters is newly optional for the WRX. This fact will no doubt surprise loyal fans, but the real surprise is how closely it mimics a traditional multi-speed automatic. The CVT has six built-in steps when the driver switches to either “Intelligent” or “Sport” mode by the steering-wheel-mounted switch, or eight ratios when the “Sport Sharp” mode is selected. Larger-diameter front disc brakes also provide greater stopping power. The standard all-wheel-drive system has a 50:50 torque split in the manual-transmission cars and a 45:55 front:rear split with the CVT. But when the going gets tough, up to 100 percent of the power can be directed to either axle. For hardcore types, the STI remains a serious nearrace machine that’s ideally suited for drivers with sporting intentions. For non-racing types, the tamer (but still potent) WRX would likely make a better choice. Either way, your drive route will have you traveling on Subaru’s wilder side.

Subaru:: XV Crosstrek Overall: The hiked-up and cladded-up version of the Impreza hatchback has been a minor hit with buyers seeking an Outback-like experience for less money.

Drivetrain: Impreza’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is standard (why no turbo option?); five-speed manual transmission or optional continuously variable unit (CVT).

Hybrid models integrate a small electric motor into the CVT for slightly improved fuel economy.

Although obviously Impreza-based, the XV Crosstrek has 8.7 inches of rock-hopping ground clearance plus a distinctive nosepiece, bumpers, roof rails, protective side cladding and rear spoiler. The meaner macho look is completed with darker window tinting and a set of 17-inch all-season tires mounted to custom-look wheels. The XV Crosstrek runs with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine shared with the Impreza that makes 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. The five-speed manual transmission has Incline Start Assist to prevent rolling backward when moving your right foot from the brake to the gas pedal while stopped on a hill. Optional is a continuously variable unit (CVT) with paddle shifters that operate six preset ratios. The Crosstrek Hybrid uses a CVT exclusively, but includes an electric motor that adds 13.4 horsepower and 48 pound-feet of torque for a total system output of 160 horsepower and 163 pound-feet. This is very much a “mild” hybrid system as the electric motor is used mainly when accelerating from rest or when called upon to assist the gasoline engine when needed. Hybrid fuel consumption is rated at 29 in the city and 33 on the highway, compared with 25/33 for the gas-only version with the CVT. Both non-hybrid and hybrid models with CVT’s share all-wheel-drive systems: the Active Torque Split setup maintains a 60:40 division, front:rear, but automatically directs up to 100 percent of the torque to either set of wheels when necessary. For most typical outdoor activities, the XV Crosstrek is about all the average person will ever need.

Kia: K900 Overview: Kia’s new rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan shows its Hyundai roots, but that isn’t a bad thing.

Drivetrain: V6 and V8 engines from the Hyundai Genesis/ Equus parts bin, both connected to eight-speed automatic transmissions; V6 pricing not yet available as it’s a late arrival.

Hyundai fearlessly jumped into the premium pool when it launched the Equus sedan a few years back and now the automaker’s Kia division follows suit with the 2015 K900. A good baseline comparison for it would be the Lexus LS460.

Both cars are relatively close in size, (except of course that the LS can be had in an extended-length model), although the K900 holds a three-inch edge in wheelbase and has a bit more interior space. Peeling back the K900’s skin reveals one of the better-looking shortcut-free interiors out there and one that’s totally in sync with its premium-car image. Standard cockpit stuff includes tri-zone climate control (driver, passenger and rear seat), a navigation system with a 9.2-inch display, power rear sunshade, a foldable rear center armrest with redundant ventilation controls and a 17-speaker, 900-watt sound system. The base K900 comes with a 311-horsepower 3.8-liter V6. When the 420-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 K900 is specified, however, the standard-features list expands with a heated steering wheel, premium leather covers for the heated and cooled front and rear seats, a panoramic sunroof with power-retractable sunshade, 16-way (up from eight-way) power-adjustable driver’s seat and a host of electronic safety systems. Most of the V8’s extra features can be added to V6-powered K900s when the extra-cost Technology and VIP packages are ordered. Both powerplants are mated to eight-speed automatic transmissions. Eco, Sport and Normal settings control shift points and the electric-power-steering settings. What isn’t offered is all-wheel-drive, a feature commonly available in other sedans in this class and one that’s pretty much essential in snowy/icy regions. Although the K900 is a newcomer to the category, shoppers who know a loaded-up bargain when they spot one should put this fancy Kia on their must-see list.

Overview: A purposeful people/cargo hauler that has finally caught up to the minivan competition.

Drivetrain: A 276-horsepower V6 sounds about right, as does a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Sedona is part of the minivan pack, but it really hasn’t been considered a major player. Perhaps all that could change for the 2015 model year. The style and proportions are right on the money and it’s devoid of superfluous curves and angles.

The interior is as clean and uncluttered as the exterior and it abounds in handy touches. There’s room for up to eight people with the standard second-row bench seat, or seven with the optional second-row lounge chairs (with retractable leg rests) that can be positioned facing the front or the rear. Either mid-row arrangement slides fore and aft over a wide range and both the 60:40 split bench or chairs stow against the front seats to maximize cargo space. Mounted within the Sedona’s stiffer platform is a 3.3-liter V6 with 276 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. As used in the Kia Sorento and Cadenza, the engine is more of a fuel miser and should outperform the 3.5 in this regard, although as of this writing the actual mpg stats are not available. The base SX comes with 17-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, backup camera and a basic audio system. The EX adds 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seats (heated in front), dual-zone air conditioning, power-sliding side doors, and touch-screen controls for the entertainment, communications and climate control. The new SXL trim level provides full-on luxury with premium perforated leather-seat coverings. There’s also tri-zone climate control, a dual-panel sunroof, push-button start, 19-inch wheels and a power-opening tailgate that automatically opens when it “senses” the key fob is in close proximity for more than three seconds. Additional safety features, such as forward collision warning, blindspot detection and rear cross-traffic alert are also available.

Kia:: Sorento Overall: My, how Kia’s tall wagon has grown up over the past few years; the current edition has its style groove in full swing and its cabin chock-full of handy features.

Drivetrain: Go with a 175-horsepower four-cylinder or an optional 290-horse V6; all-wheel-drive can be served up with either engine.

Following a design freshening, platform stiffening and power upgrading for 2014, the Sorento swaggers forth into 2015 as cool and competent as ever. And why not, since most competing three-row wagons require a lot more coin to seal the deal. The Sorento’s stout sub-frame supports a 175-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder powerplant that’s rated at 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. Optional is a 3.3-liter V6 producing 290-horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque.

With either engine a six-speed automatic with manual shift controls is the sole cog swapper. The all-wheel-drive system (available with either engine) is a full-time unit that constantly varies the torque to all four wheels and can direct power to the outer wheels in high-speed turning situations for added control (known as torque vectoring). Along with the Sorento’s LX, EX and SX trims, a SX Limited model is loaded up with a wood-trimmed interior with ventilated soft leather-covered seats. You also get self-leveling headlights and exclusive 19-inch wheels (17- and 18-inch rims adorn lesser Sorentos) when you spring for this content-rich model. The options sheet contains a power liftgate, panoramic sunroof, advanced voice-activated communications, infotainment and navigation controls (incorporating an eight-inch touch-screen) and a blind-spot monitoring system that constantly tracks vehicles in the immediate vicinity and issues an audible and visual alert should any get too close.

Kia: Soul Overall: It’s not just a youth-market car as the Soul draws in buyers from every age group, which is why Kia dealers can’t keep the “mousy” hatch/wagon in stock. For 2015 the Soul also goes electric.

Drivetrain: Base 1.6-liter four-cylinder shared with the Rio; 2.0 option adds passing power; six-speed transmissions.

Few cars are ever considered groundbreaking, but that pretty much sums up the Soul. It’s the kind of vehicle that other automakers would give anything to have in their stable. Funky styling, a frugal price tag and fuel-saving ways have made it a winner. Even those lovable rodents in the Soul’s TV spots are half way to attaining icon status. For 2014, Kia upgraded and slightly enlarged the cabin for more front head and shoulder room and added a bit more rear legroom. In addition the dashboard was revised to accommodate an available eight-inch touch screen. The platform was made 29 percent stiffer and accommodates a suspension that was reengineered for improved ride and handling. Outside, design details inspired by the Soul-based Trax’ster concept provided the basis for a front and rear facelift that makes the Soul much more appealing. The rear liftgate was made 2.4 inches wider and is now flanked by one of the coolest set of taillights ever installed on any vehicle. The entry-level Base Soul comes with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder that produces 130 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the Plus and Exclaim models delivers 164 horses and 151 pound-feet of torque. The 1.6 uses a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic, while the 2.0 is only available with the automatic. Base Souls feature air conditioning plus all the usual power amenities. As well as the larger engine the mid-range Plus adds a fancier interior including floor console stowage and a backup camera, while the Exclaim gets 18-inch wheels (17’s are standard), projector-style headlights, multi-adjustable driver’s seat and a cooled glove box. Optional is a panorama-style sunroof and leather seats (heated and ventilated in front), along with a navigation system and premium Infinity-brand sound package. Under the heading of Big News, the Soul EV arrives for 2015 with an electric motor rated at 109 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque and an EPA-rated range of 93 miles before its lithium-ion-polymer batteries need recharging.

In 2007, it became Tony Basso GM. In 2008 and 2009, Moab Chevrolet and Moab Ford also joined the auto division. Basso currently operates 14 additional businesses in the area including radio stations, restaurants, a recreational and ATV dealership, rental car agencies, storage units, apartments and a real estate holding company. He has served on and chaired various local boards, is a past director for the Independent Auto Dealers of Utah and also was an Independent Quality Dealer of Utah.

After graduating college, he left the auto business and worked at several aerospace firms ending up as Manager of International Contracts for a major international aerospace company.

Upon realizing that flying overseas three or four times a month was not compatible with family life, he returned to the family auto business, buying out his father’s Pontiac Cadillac GMC dealership in 1996. In 2011, he acquired the Chevrolet and Buick franchises to become a full-line GM dealer. Crump has been active in many community organizations and boards and is involved in area charitable work.

Tony Divino is currently a member of the Auto Show Committee, as well as the past President of the Utah Auto Dealers Association. After graduating from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, Divino went to work for ADP Dealer Services in Denver, Colorado. He later joined the Stevinson Group of dealerships transitioning into the automotive industry. Divino came back to Utah with Larry H. Miller and helped open Miller’s first Toyota dealership in Murray, Utah. After becoming General Manager of Larry H. Miller Toyota, Divino was promoted to Director of Operations for all of the various Miller dealerships.

In 1988, he purchased Toyota of Ogden and served as the Utah Director of the Toyota Dealer Advertising Board for 13 years.

Currently, Divino is the owner of Tony Divino Toyota/Scion in Riverdale, Utah. He is a board member of Prevent Child Abuse of Utah, as well as past President.

Divino also serves on the Weber School District Foundation Board and was past President of that association as well. He has been married to his wife, Cynthia, for 38 years and they are the parents of three beautiful daughters.

Brent Brown, Auto Show Committee Member, became Utah County’s Toyota Dealer in 1999 and has since served on Toyota’s National Dealer Council as well as President of the Utah Auto Dealers Association. Brent Brown Toyota has received the Toyota President’s award and has been recognized as one of Utah County’s top three companies to work for. It has aslso been selected as Utah County’s favorite auto dealer for several years. Brown was awarded the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2004 and has been a champion of children’s education in Utah County, raising over a million dollars for the Provo School District Foundation.

2015 Hall of Fame Inductees The New Car Dealers of Utah will induct three local industry legends into the Hall of Fame, at the 2015 Utah International Auto Expo, taking place Friday, January 16 through Monday, January 19 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day). Alan Archibald, David Labrum and Robert Davis among the inductees for their years of service and dedication to the auto industry and community, in Utah.

Motor Company’s Chairman’s Award, he served as President on the Board of Directors for the New Car Dealers of Utah, and received the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award, in 2002.

Hyundai:: Genesis Coop Overall: The Genesis Coupe arrives with impressive levels of content and performance now that the V6 engine is standard fare. Fortunately the price increase for the extra power is only slight.

Drivetrain: A 348-horsepower V6 is now standard for 2015 and drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission or optional eight-speed automatic.

It can’t be an easy road for the Genesis Coupe these days, with strong competition coming from the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger. All three headline-grabbers provide plenty of choices for buyers, especially under the hood. The Genesis Coupe can’t touch them for raw power, but Hyundai is stepping up its game by retiring the turbocharged four-cylinder that was standard for 2014 and placing the previously optional V6 in the spotlight as the sole powerplant. That engine is rated at 348 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, topping the domestic ponycar trio’s V6 engines. The 3.8 comes with a six-speed manual transmission, while an eight-speed automatic is optional. It has a rev-matching program that blips the throttle when downshifting to help keep the car stable. That combination certainly gives the Genesis Coupe something to brag about, along with an attractive appearance that received considerable updating for 2014. The Coupe’s lines are crisp and taut, the wind-cheating roofline is fastback smooth and the stance is perfectly low and squat. Inside there are soft-touch materials on the door panels and dashboard, while metal and chrome accents stand out on the door handles, center stack and gauge cluster.

Base models arrive fairly well turned-out, while selecting the 3.8 Ultimate lets you feast on a power sunroof, touch-screen navigation, premium audio system and heated leather seats. The 3.8 R-Spec option group comes with a stiffer suspension, six-speed manual transmission, limited-slip differential, Brembo-brand brakes, sport seats and 19-inch alloy wheels (18s are standard). The Coupe’s slight $400 base price increase for 2015 is fair and competitive with similar domestic-based sporty models.

Overall: A mid-sized tall wagon available in regular- and extended-length versions; transport up to seven people.

Drivetrain: The shorter Sport model is powered by a base 2.4-liter four-cylinder, or optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder; 3.3-liter V6 is exclusive to the extended-length Santa Fe; six-speed automatics are standard for all versions, along with AWD availability.

Hyundai wisely makes two different sizes of the same model, which allows buyers to decide which version best suits their passenger and/or cargo space needs: the shorter-wheelbase Sport or the longer-by-8.5-inches seven-passenger Santa Fe. The elongated version is heftier than the Sport by more than 400 pounds, which explains why it’s only available with a 290-horsepower 3.3-liter V6. Conversely, the Sport comes with a base 190-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder, or optional 264-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. In all cases the sole transmission is a six-speed automatic with manual shift controls. Hyundai lets you add its latest all-wheel-drive setup with any Santa Fe you select. The system includes Torque Vectoring Corner Control (TVCC) that monitors driving conditions and can instantaneously direct the correct amount of power or braking force to any single wheel. TVCC assists in slippery conditions and provides added precision when negotiating turns. The Santa Fe features plenty of standard content plus unexpected treats, including Driver Selectable Steering Mode with Normal, Comfort (reduces steering effort by 10 percent) and Sport settings (increases effort by the same amount). Turbo models add performance suspension components (stiffer shocks and stabilizer bars), 19-inch wheels (17s are standard), fancier gauge cluster, push-button start and heated front seats. The up-level V6 Limited comes with a wider selection of content over the base GLS, such as dual-zone climate control, leather seat covers, second-row captain’s chairs and blind-spot detection that alerts the driver if another vehicle is approaching the Santa Fe from either side.

Overall: Since the Veloster’s inception, Hyundai has a major hit on its hands owing to the vehicle’s sleek design, comfy-cozy interior and affordability; “Re:Flex” and “R-Spec” trims are added for 2015.

Drivetrain: The base 1.6-liter four-cylinder is fine for sedate travel; an optional 201-horsepower turbo 1.6 enhances the car’s sporty demeanor; six-speed manual transmissions are standard with both engines; six-speed automated manual is optional with base 1.6 while a six-speed automatic can be ordered for the Turbo.

The car that caused quite a stir when Hyundai first introduced it for the 2012 model year continues to evolve in terms of content and performance. The three-door front-wheel-drive hatchback is the counterpoint to Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe. Velosters start with with a 138-horsepower 1.6-liter engine that specializes in fuel economy. It’s ideal for commuter-based driving, but for a more serious punch you should opt for the Veloster Turbo that makes 201 horsepower and significantly changes the car’s character. The non-turbo Veloster comes with a six-speed manual transmission but a six-speed automated dual-clutch transmission (DCT) is optional. Specifying the DCT adds a selectable Active Eco mode that adjusts the computer-regulated engine and transmission mapping to maximize fuel economy. Stepping up to the Veloster Turbo lets you choose between the six-speed stick or the available six-speed automatic. Visually, the Turbo gets a more aggressive front end with a larger blacked out grille, unique hood, ground effects body kit, a revised rear bumper and a gigantic twin exhaust poking out the back. Keeping the base Veloster well below the $20,000 threshold involves pruning the equipment list, although air conditioning, remote keyless entry, seven-inch multi-function touch-screen display and a newly added rearview monitor are included along with the usual power-operated windows, door locks and outside mirrors. Optional for base models but standard for the Turbo is an upgraded interior, push-button start, up-level 450-watt sound package, navigation system and a panoramic sunroof. For 2015 the Veloster Re:Flex starts with the non-turbo 1.6, then adds the DCT, leather interior, bigger 18-inch wheels (17-inch alloys are standard) and other trim bits. For the performance-minded, a new R-Spec trim level includes sport-suspension tuning, sport seats and a six-speed close-ratio transmission that uses a B&M-brand short-throw gear shifter.

Hyundai:: Equus Overall: A Hyundai? Really? Yes the Equus is one car that will surprise even the most jaded luxury-car buyer with a superior level of coddling comfort and impressive performance. And it sells for thousands less than the competition.

Drivetrain: A 429-horsepower V8 is teamed with an eightspeed automatic transmission; all-wheel-drive would complete the package, but is still a no-go.

Few automotive brands cover as broad a product spectrum as Hyundai, from bare-bones econo-cars to full-on luxury. The latter is where the Equus prominently resides, with a wealth of standard and available features that rival the top-selling German and Japanese luxury marques. The Equus was recently made more enticing with a mild exterior and interior refresh plus a retuned suspension to enhance ride comfort, but all-wheel-drive availability remains wanting. Entering through its generously sized rear doors provides a clear indication that those seated behind the chauffeur should be able to really stretch their extremities. The seats are covered in premium leather and come with what Hyundai calls built-in “thermoelectric devices” that provide heating cooling and humidity control to both the seat backs and bottoms. The resplendent trim pieces are done up in genuine wood and brushed aluminum that would do any luxo-cruiser proud. The driver’s chair can be further upgraded with a massaging function, while twin rear bucket seats separated by a multi-functional console are also but an option tick away. The Equus features an electric air suspension that can be adjusted for maximum cushy-ride compliance, or switched to “Sport” mode if a firmer, more controlled ride is preferred. Continuing as the standard powertrain is a 429-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 and eight-speed-automatic-transmission duo that is optional in the Genesis R-Spec. Standard safety include lane-departure warning for inattentive and distracted drivers, safe-distance-monitoring smart cruise control and a grille-mounted forwardview camera that aids in parking.

■ Based on BMW’s 4 Series coupe platform, the X4 draws inspiration from the X6 that has been around since the 2008 model year.

Both could be called “tall sport utility passenger cars with sloping rooflines and large hatch openings instead of trunks.” That’s a bit clunky, of course, so BMW calls them “Sport Activity Coupes.” Smaller and lighter than the X6, the X4’s key attribute is still its stowage flexibility. With the rear seat occupied there’s still several golf bag’s worth of room back there.

The 40:20:40 split-folding second-row bench increases the load space a bit more. Turbocharged fourand six-cylinder engines drive all four wheels through eight-speed automatic transmissions.

■ Sharing the CLA sedan’s platform, the GLA is taller and more squared-off, but minus a trunk it’s also eight inches shorter. Two turbocharged four-cylinder engines make up to 355 horsepower and shift through seven-speed automated manual transmissions.

The base GLA250 is a front driver, but can be had with M-B’s 4MATIC all-wheel-drive. The higher-performing GLA45 AMG has standard AWD. Power everything is a given, but on the options list is a panorama sunroof and a sport package with extra body cladding and 19-inch wheels (18-inchers are standard). The GLA45 AMG has its own wheels, sport seats, suspension, exhaust and steering systems plus a faster-shifting transmission.

+ALFA ROMEO 4C

New vehicles for new niches.

Secret weapons.

■ It has been more than 20 years since Alfa Romeo cars were sold in North America and the 4C is quite a comeback statement. The body “tub” is made of carbon fiber with the front and rear subframes built from aluminum. It weighs less than a Mazda Miata and comes with a 237-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder mounted behind the two-seat cockpit. Parent company Fiat Chrysler claims zero-to-60-mph times in the midfour-second range. The sole transmission offering is a six-speed automated manual with steering-column-mounted paddle shifters.

The first batch of 500 4C cars will be the fully loaded “Launch Edition” with less-expensive models arriving later in the model year.

+ACURA TLX

■ The TLX replaces both the TSX sedan as well as the larger TL and is a bit smaller than the latter. The wheelbase remains identical to that of the TL, however, ensuring adequate legroom for rear-seat riders. Under the hood, the TLX is mostly like the TSX.You’ll find a brand new 206-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder and an eight-speed automated manual “dual clutch” transmission. It’s unique in that it actually comes with an automatic-transmission-style torque converter that helps smooth out the shifts. Optional is a 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower, 10 more than the retiring TL’s 3.5. It gets a nine-speed automatic transmission. The four-cylinder TLX is strictly a front-wheel-driver, while V6 versions are available with an upgraded version of Acura’s SH-AWD.

+BMW i3

■ Instead of building the i3’s electric drive system within a conventional passenger car, it’s a brand new platform that houses a 500-pound lithium-ion battery pack. The passenger space was then formed from carbon fiber and the body panels molded from plastic. The upright styling does help maximize interior space and makes the i3 ideal for scooting around town.

Additionally, rear-hinged demi-doors open clamshell style. Keeping with a “green” theme, the seats are covered in mostly recycled and organic materials and the optional wood trim originates from sustainably managed eucalyptus forests in Germany. The i3’s 179-horsepower electric motor drives the rear wheels. The system provides an 80-100-mile range. An optional 650-c.c. two-cylinder gasoline engine/generator extends the range to about 185 miles. Recharging requires eight hours with BMW’s optional 240-volt home charge port.

+VOLKSWAGEN GOLF

■ It’s a bit bigger than before, inside and out, and it’s a little more refined. The front seats are well bolstered and the soft-touch dashboard and angled (toward the driver) control panel have an upscale-ness commonly reserved for more expensive Germany-based brands. The Golf now comes with a 5.8-inch touch-screen infotainment system that responds to swiping and pinch zooming, just like most smart phones. The base version uses a 170-horsepower turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder, replacing the 170horsepower 2.5-liter five-cylinder. The Golf TDI’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel makes a bit more power this season (150) while selecting the sporty GTI gets you an improved version of VW’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 210 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

CHRYSLER 200

+

■ The 200 competes in the high-volume mid-size bracket with the Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion and Honda Accord. There’s a passing resemblance to the Dodge Dart (which shares the same basic platform), but otherwise is designed like nothing else in the category. The excellent interior has no shift lever, but rather a console knob for forward and reverse. A new 2.4-liter four-cylinder produces 184 horsepower, which connects to a nine-speed automatic transmission, as does the available 3.6-liter V6 that makes 295 horsepower. All-wheeldrive is available with the V6.

GMC CANYON

■ When every other category has been downsizing, it seems ironic that automakers have stuck with full-size pickups and have basically abandoned the small-truck market. The Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Canyon have returned, however, on new global platforms, and with familiar four- and six-cylinder powertrains. The GMC comes out on top as the tougher looking of the two, mimicking the styling of the full-size Sierra. Mechanically, however, the the Canyon/ Colorado are essentially the same rear-wheeldrive rigs with optional 4x4. The GMC can only be ordered with the 305-horsepower V6, however, and therefore starts at a significantly higher price than the base four-cylinder Chevy.

+PORSCHE MACAN

■ With new entries in the luxury-compact tall-wagon department, the Macan’s timing is perfect. The mostly aluminum body is clearly influenced by the larger Cayenne, from the shape of the nose and fenders to the slant of the liftgate. Overall, the Macan is shorter than the Cayenne by about six inches. Interestingly, both models are nearly equal in width. The base Macan S comes with a 340-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. The Macan Turbo (wait, aren’t both engines turbocharged?) has a 400-horsepower 3.6-liter V6. Porsche claims the 3.6 takes the 4,100-pound Macan to 60 mph from rest in 4.6 seconds, compared with 5.2 seconds for the 3.0. Actually, 0.2 of a second can be deducted from both times by ordering the optional Sport Chrono package that adjusts the engine and transmission to function in a more aggressive manner. Both powerplants are connected to seven-speed automated manual transmissions (called PDK in Porsche lingo) that make ultra-quick upshifts and extra-smooth rev-matching downshifts. All-wheel-drive is standard.

+AUDI A3

■ The A3 was originally offered as a wagon, however Audi has introduced a brand new A3 sedan and is also extending the line to include a cabriolet (convertible) and an A3 E-tron plug-in hybrid hatchback later in the model year. The A3 has been given a new platform that extends the front wheels forward for added passenger space. Base front-drive models use a 170-horsepower turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder, with a 220-horsepower turbocharged 2.0 on the option sheet. A 290-horsepower 2.0 is installed in the sporty S3. Connected to each engine is a six-speed automated-manual transmission. Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system is standard with both turbo 2.0 engines.

+CHEVROLET TAHOE

■ The 2015 Tahoe has undergone a complete transformation, but has retained its size and capability. There’s a stronger ladder frame that slightly widens the distance between the left and right wheels. Although the displacement is the same as last year’s base engine, this 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 is all-aluminum and has direct fuel injection and continuously variable valve timing. Both aid power and fuel economy. The only transmission is a six-speed automatic. For crash protection, the Tahoe can be had with an available front-seat center air bag that provides protection between front passengers in the event of a side impact.

■ The Renegade is the smallest of Jeep’s sport utes, and by a long shot.

It was designed here, but it’s built at a Fiat plant in Italy and sold in more than 100 countries. Base Renegades run with a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 160 horsepower. The optional non-turbo 2.4 puts out 184 and is matched to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive is standard on all but the top-line 4x4 Trailhawk where Active Drive four-wheeldrive is the order of the day (optional elsewhere). There are three trim levels with the top models getting 18-inch wheels and MySky dual glass roof panels can be removed to maximize the open-air experience.

■ It sticks to a proven formula of keeping the size and weight in check while keeping drivers and passengers thinking they’re ensconced in a vehicle that’s actually larger than it is. Despite being physically and dimensionally similar to the old car, the new Fit actually looks bigger, thanks to more prominent body creases and fenders that bulge out around the wheel openings.

Passenger volume has been modestly increased and rear-seat legroom lengthened by 3.1 inches, primarily due to the new chassis and more compact rear suspension. A new 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine makes 130 horsepower, compared to 117 for the previous 1.5.

A six-speed manual transmission, or optional continuously variable (CVT) unit are your choices.

LEXUS NX

■ If it’s anonymity you’re after, you should best steer clear of the NX. This ride is smaller than the RX series but has a much more dramatic front end that’s dominated by the corporate “spindle” grille. The F-Sport model has an even bigger grille that’s blacked-out. The available all-wheel-drive for the the base NX 200t directs torque to the front wheels when cruising, but can send up to 50 percent to the rears when roads warrant. The hybrid NX 300h uses an electric motor to power to the rear axle.

The F Sport has a sport-tuned suspension and steering, unique interior trim and summer tires.

+ LINCOLN MKC

■ The MKC faces off against the new Mercedes-Benz GLA and other upscale car-based wagons such as the Lexus NX. The MKC’s luxury standard content ensures there will be little, if any, commonality with the Ford Escape platform upon which this car is based. It’s also a quieter inside, thanks in part to Active Noise Control that uses hidden microphones to create opposing sound waves which are sent through the car’s speakers to cancel out unwanted engine noises. Front-wheeldrive is standard and all-wheel-drive an option when the base turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is ordered. AWD is standard with the optional 2.3-liter turbo engine.

LEGACY

■ The Legacy has grown both in stature and size to become one of the most spacious mid-size four-doors on the market. It’s sleeker and has a new dashboard as the focal point of an overhauled interior. The Legacy’s fourand six-cylinder powerplants basically carry over from 2014, although a continuously variable transmission is now standard across the line. The standard all-wheel-drive system that comes with all Legacys has been augmented for 2015 with torque vectoring. The system applies light braking to the inside front wheel while turning to enhance steering control. Subaru’s optional EyeSight suite of safety aids includes Pre-Collision Braking that will slow or stop the Legacy if it’s determined that a rear-end smack-down is imminent.

■ Hyundai has its Genesis sedan and Kia now has its related K900. Simply put, it’s the biggest, baddest and most expensive Kia model that money can buy. Peeling back the handsome skin reveals one of the better-looking shortcut-free interiors out there and one that's totally in sync with its premium-car image. There’s obviously plenty of standard content for this top-tier Kia, even when the base 311-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 is selected. Optional is a 420-horsepower 5.0-liter V8. Both powerplants are mated to eight-speed automatic transmissions.

Eco, Sport and Normal settings control shift points and the electric-power-steering settings. Unlike the Genesis, which offers all-wheel-drive, the k900 is rear-wheel-drive only. V8 models obviously get more content, larger wheels and different package selection than V6 models.

FORD MUSTANG

+

■ No doubt some folks will love it and some will hate it, but the

quickest way to describe the new Mustang is to say it looks like a more muscular version of the 2014 model, but with more curves and a nose that pays stylistic homage to the Ford Taurus/Fusion. Regardless, you instantly know it's a Mustang. The stance is lower and wider, amplified by the rear fenders that have a visually dynamic bulge to them. The new Mustang finally gets an independent rear suspension as standard, which brings it in line with other performance cars. The base engine continues to be the 3.7-liter V6, although it's downrated slightly to 300 horsepower.

The top-of-the-line Mustang GT continues with its 5.0-liter V8, although it’s up-rated to 435 horsepower. The new kid on the block is the 2.3-liter turbo-

charged four-cylinder engine that produces 310 horsepower.

+HYUNDAI SONATA

■ The classy new Sonata has toned-down looks and shares a physical affiliation with the bigger 2015 Genesis sedan. The interior receives a new dashboard and control panel, including an integrated display screen. The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder makes 185 horsepower, down from the 2014 version’s 200 horsepower, while, the optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is rated at 245 horsepower (previously 274). A six-speed automatic transmission directs power to the front wheels. Exclusive to the new Sonata Eco model is a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder that produces 177 horsepower. That engine connects to a seven-speed automated manual transmission. Note that the gas-electric hybrid will be reissued sometime in calendar year 2015 as a 2016 model.

+ FORD F150

■ The real question, apparently, about a new Ford F-150 with an all-aluminum body is whether buyers actually think this is a good thing. Yes, the press is all over it, but customer surveys show a general malaise and indifference since the weight it saves (about 700 pounds) is just a number and doesn’t mean much of anything tangible. The question buyers have is whether it’s tough, affordable and goes farther on a tank of gas. Theoretically, yes to all as aluminum doesn’t rust and the lighter truck can be ordered with a new 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 “Ecoboost” engine. The regular V6 and V8 engines are back, of course, but with less heft to haul around, they too should be marginally better on fuel. And since aluminum construction is deemed to be a competitive advantage,

Ford’s edge will likely be short-lived as General Motors, for one, considers the switch.

Mercedes: M-Class Overall: The gold standard for five-passenger tall wagons cuts a huge swath with its various powertrains and options.

Drivetrain: Base 3.5-liter gasoline V6 makes 302 horsepower; a 2.1-liter turbo-diesel replaces the 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel; a new 329-horsepower twin-turbo V6 in ML400; the 4.6-liter V8 is out, which means the only V8 engine is in the AMG. With the M-Class, Mercedes-Benz was one of the first luxury automakers to offer a high-riding sport utility vehicle . . . way back in the 1990s. While some brands have only got the ball rolling with competing models the last half dozen years and others have already come and gone, the M-Class is now well into its third generation. The current version offers a repertoire of four-cylinder, V6 and V8 powerplants that range from fuel-minded to take-no-prisoners high-output. Every engine uses the same seven-speed automatic transmission and all models come with 4MATIC all-wheel-drive. The one variation is that the ML350 with its 302-horsepower V6 can be ordered with rear-wheel-drive. For 2015, a 2.1-liter twin-turbo inline-four produces a decent 200 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Called the ML250 BlueTEC, it replaces the ML350 BlueTEC with its 240-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel. Also joining the ranks, as it is with numerous other Mercedes-Benz models, is the 329-horsepower twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 gasoline engine in the ML400 4MATIC. This actually replaces the ML550 and its 402-horsepower 4.6-liter V8. Of course the King Kong of the M-class is the ML63 AMG. This street beast lays down 518 horsepower (550 with the performance package) courtesy of a 5.5-liter V8. It’s also fitted with unique 20-inch wheels with high-performance tires, sharper suspension settings and more supportive seats. Every M-Class’s road manners are sharpened with Agility Control active damping that varies the ride and stability characteristics according to road conditions. Optional is an “On & Offroad” package with six selectable transmission modes, a skid plate and a two-speed transfer case with a locking low range. Also available is M-B’s Active Curve System that works with the air suspension to significantly reduce body lean on twisty roads. Fully loaded models display wood trim with satin nickel garnish and stitched leather seat covers. Longdistance drivers might want to pop for the available multi-contour front seats that’ll massage your stress away.

Mercedes: GL-Class Overall: It’s a bigger and more luxurious relative to the M-class that seats up to seven passengers in limo-like comfort.

Drivetrain: A diesel model is the thriftiest; Gasoline V6 and V8 engines are all turbocharged; start-stop function now available for all engines except the diesel.

Who says that a limousine has to look like a car? The GLClass has the room, comfort and amenities to move the whole family in rock-star style, anywhere they want to go. The GL also looks the part with its enlarged grille, big three-pointed-star badge and shapely side panels. The base GL350 starts with a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel that makes 240 horsepower and, more importantly, 455 pound-feet of torque. Here it’s referred to as the GL350. Gasoline engine choices, every one twin-turbocharged by the way, start with the GL450’s 362-horsepower V6. This replaces the previous GL450’s 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8. Next up is the GL550 that uses a 429-horsepower 5.5-liter V8. In a class by itself -- the AMG class, that is -- is the GL63 with its prodigious 550 horses and the ability to spring to 60 mph in a company-estimated 4.8 seconds (nearly four seconds quicker than the base GL350). All editions arrive with seven-speed automatic transmissions plus M-B’s impressive 4MATIC all-wheel-drive that specializes in providing secure all-conditions traction. Should you choose to risk your significant cash outlay by taking your Merc off the pavement, you can opt for an On/Off-Road package that includes a two-speed transfer case with a low range, locking differentials and skid plates to protect the underbelly. It also includes a modified air suspension that raises maximum ground clearance by your choice of 1.2, 2.4 and 3.5 inches above the standard 8.5 inches of ground clearance. Among the many creature comforts for 2015, the GL offers an optional Splitview screen. Incorporated into the dashboard, it allows the driver to keep an eye on the vehicle’s operations, including the navigation system, but on the same screen the front passenger can view a variety of programming. It’s the same screen, but depending on where you’re seating, it shows two different displays.

With the arrival of the CLA-Class for 2014, the C-Class moves up to a more elevated perch on the Mercedes-Benz family tree. Along with a promotion, the sedan (new coupe, wagon, plug-in hybrid and performance AMG versions will follow later in calendar-year 2015) has been re-sized and re-energized. C-Class passengers and their gear are enclosed in a completely new skin that Mercedes says is 154 pounds lighter than before, thanks to more aluminum body panels. Total weight has been reduced by about 220 pounds.

An interior makeover includes well-bolstered seats and a wood-trimmed control panel. The toggle-style gear-shift lever is located on the steering column and in its former location on the console is a controller with a unique touch pad. It allows your fingers to zoom or reduce (pinch) and select the various menu items, including infotainment, communications and climate systems that are shown on a dash-mounted tablet-style screen that juts out from the dashboard. The C300 has a turbocharged 241-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine while the C400 gets a 329-horsepower twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6. Both engines are matched to seven-speed automatic transmissions. All models come with “Agility Select” that includes Comfort, Eco, Sport and “Sport +” settings for the engine, transmission and suspension. And then there’s an “Individual” setting to fine-tune those preferences. Mercedes-Benz’s 4MATIC permanent all-wheel-drive system is optional on C300 and standard on C400 models. The C300 arrives with climate control, leather-covered seats (16-way power-adjustable in front and split-folding in back), electric parking brake and keyless pushbutton start. The C400 carries about the same basic content but adds sportier AMG exterior trim and 18-inch AMG wheels (17-inch alloys for the C300). From there, leading-edge luxury options include a sport suspension, panoramic sunroof and 590-watt 13-speaker Burmester-brand audio system. You can also add the latest high-tech safety gear designed for maximum collision and injury avoidance with other vehicles and pedestrians.

The GLA gives entry-level Mercedes-Benz shoppers a clear choice. Those preferring the slinkiness of the CLA sedan can take that route, while the more practically minded can opt for the GLA’s added carrying capacity. Both vehicles appear similar from the windshield forward, but otherwise go their separate ways. The GLA is taller and more squared-off, but minus a trunk it is a significant eight inches shorter in length.

The base GLA250 runs with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that generates 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Step up to the GLA45 AMG and those values increase to 355 horsepower and 332 pound-feet. The AMG’s engine block has been strengthened and its turbocharger produces nearly twice the boost of the GLA250’s. That results in a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.8 seconds, versus a more leisurely 7.1 for the GLA250 (as measured by Mercedes-Benz). Each powerplant uses a seven-speed automated manual transmission with paddle shifters that produces quicker upshifts and downshifts than a traditional automatic that comes with a torque converter. The GLA250 comes with front-wheel-drive, but can be had with M-B’s 4MATIC all-wheel-drive that directs up to 50 percent of the torque to the rear wheels, as needed.

The GLA45 AMG comes standard with AWD. Base GLAs include a power liftgate, power driver’s seat with memory and an autonomous braking system that slows down or even stops the vehicle if you neglect to react to slower or stopped traffic in front. A panorama sunroof and a sport package with extra body cladding and 19-inch wheels (18-inchers are standard) are optional. The GLA45 AMG includes unique wheels, sport bucket seats, sport suspension, exhaust and steering systems plus a faster-shifting transmission.
