A SPATIAL BRIDGE

FACADE APPLICATION/ INTERNAL-EXTERNAL BRIDGE

Academic Work I Memphis, TN

Description:

Facade Application, Existing Building

Assignment:

Our class was called to study the technique of pleated paper folding. Then, discover an applied use for the pleated folding and how it could be inhabited by human beings.

Concept:

A serene facade system can be one that is designed with pleated folds. The building selected for this project is Jones Hall, which houses the bustling Architecture and Design department, as well as the active Foreign Language department. A serene facade will bring a peaceful balance to these busy communities.

First, the pleated folding structure is applied to an existing university building. Then, it’s extended from the building to create a spatial bridge between the indoor and outdoor environment. Finally, the spatial bridge allows for a shaded patio space for students and professors to rest outside of the classroom environment. Here visitors can catch an autumn breeze or hear the subtle wrestling of tree leaves blowing in the wind.
