The commemoration ceremonies will be capped off at 8pm at Café Istanbul with the New Orleans premiere of UPSTAIRS, a new dramatic musical by Wayne Self with a featured performance by New Orleans own popular Varla Jean Merman. Self is an activist playwright and composer whose theatre, music, a d v o c a c y, and writings have inWayne Self spired, educated, and entertained thousands. He is a GLAAD media spokesman and a Huffington P o s t blogger, whose own Varla Jean Merman website provides a needed platform for thoughtful, compassionate LGBT voices. Upstairs, Self’s third musical, was inspired by his time as a Music Director for a Metropolitan Community Church— a gay-affirming denomination whose New Orleans congregation lost many members to the Upstairs Lounge Fire. Self has an MFA in Musical Theatre Performance with an emphasis in Composition from Notre Dame de Namur University and is a candidate for a MTS from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley. Tickets to the performance are $35. Proceeds will be donated to benefit the NOLA LGBTQ community.

40th Anniversary Upstairs Lounge Fire LGBT Commemoration Ceremonies June 24 The 40th Anniversary Upstairs Lounge Fire LGBT Commemoration Ceremonies are scheduled for June 24th and are designed to remember this significant event in New Orleans history and to afford the 32 victims of the fire the dignity and respect they were denied at the time of their death. Artist Skylar Fein will give a brief lecture accompanied by a slide show on the fire. Author Clay Delery will discuss the weeks following the fire. Both will be followed by a viewing of the Williams Research Center’s archival material concerning the fire, including the original police report as well as an original manuscript of Johnny Townsend’s 2011 book about the fire entitled Let the Faggots Burn: The UpStairs Lounge Fire. In 2008, The Upstairs Lounge tragedy was memorialized with an art exhibit by Skylar Fein at the Contemporary Arts Center as part of the first annual Prospect 1, a citywide collection of art exhibits. It was restaged in 2010 in New York by “No Longer Empty.” Fein and Delery’s lectures, and the exhibit will be free and open to the public. The Historic New Orleans Collection event will be followed by a Jazz funeral procession at 4:15pm from the Williams Research Center to the site of the fire marked by a bronze sidewalk plaque at the corner of Iberville and Chartres Streets. There at 4:30pm a special blessing by Rev. Bill Terry of St. Anna's Episcopal Church, and a solemn reading of the victim’s names by Lesbian of the Year Misti Ates

Rip Naquin offered a moving tribute of appreciation during the ULF Headliner Spectacular to Regina Adams, who lost her first lover, Reginald Eugene Adams, Jr., in the Upstairs Lounge Fire. Regina's eloquent response brought home the realization of what the tragedy truly meant in heart-wrenching fashion. Many of the older generation there knew much about the fire, while many in the younger generation spanning the soon to be 40 years since the fire, got their first true understanding of the tragedy. The Upstairs Lounge Fire Memorial Plaque dedicated on the 30th Anniversary of the fire at the corner of Iberville and Chartres Streets in the French Quarter will be one of the sites during the 40th Anniversary Upstairs Lounge Fire LGBT Commemoration Ceremonies on Monday, June 24th beginning at 3pm at the Williams Research Center, 301 Chartres, part of The Historic New Orleans Collection. Chuck Turner and Bill MIller hosted the 22nd 4 Seasons Anniversary Spectacular Weekend at their popular Metairie club. Saturday night was the festive annual Cocktail Party with one of their great buffets followed by the annual Anniversary Drag Show headlined by Slidell's Queen of Comedy Big Momma Lavouge. On Sunday, it was a great afternoon on the patio with the Anniversary Crawfish/Shrimp Boil and BBQ. Yes, crawfish/shrimp and all the fixins - corn on the cob, potatoes, garlic and onions, plus BBQ sausage and chicken.
The 22nd 4 Seasons Anniversary Show brought Coca Mesa, Big Momma Lavouge, Princesse Stephaney and Raven Kennedy to the stage for the festive occasion in Metairie, Louisiana.
Johnny Passion's Gospel Explosion brought a huge assortment of acts to the stage at JohnPaul's in New Orleans. Mother’s Day Shooting and Redemption It’s a violation, we are all impacted, and we are all feeling a sense of betrayal. The Mayor has little to add to the conversation, what can he say really? Another protest march against violence, what will it accomplish really? Tamar Jackson was interviewed on TV the day of the shooting spree. She expressed what many of us know to be true. That an entire generation is likely lost to violence. It is hard to say this. We don’t want to think it. As Christians it runs counter current to the idea of salvation and redemption. Just a short time after the spree a band struck up and people wanted their Second Line to go on. I am not sure what that says but it needs to be looked at. Silence IS violence. Further, simply moving on in a hopeless sense of “this is simply the way it is” cannot be accepted or acceptable. We say things have to change in our neighborhoods but they seem to stay the same. Are we a valley of dry bones that cannot be brought to life? Two days before the spree of wanton violence violated us all on Mother’s Day I was at a film showing of Shell Shocked, a documentary about violence in New Orleans. I was with a panel that was supposed to field questions. Some of the questions were broad like, “What’s THE church going to do about this?” More often than not they were not questions but rather a desire to talk about what they were doing or to complain (without a question) about what was not being done. The collective reality was scattered. Why? Because the phenomena is BIG; too big – almost. I am not sure how, we as a city can begin to be collective in our thoughts, hopes, and desire to see an end to violence being the norm. I am not sure how, we as a community, can galvanize ourselves into active participants in redemption but I can say that we must
and we will. If not this city that by many standards is recovering and prospering will die. Its very soul will become so blighted by violence and the acceptance of violence that it will die a slow death of its very soul. What might redemption look like? For some, it may be sacrificing your need to be recognized and get that “feel good moment” and simply finding an effective mission to children to financially support. That gift can be $1.00 to $100,000. It’s an investment in redemption. For others, it might be seeking, actively seeking out a youth driven partner to hook up with and donate some time; make and deliver some sandwiches; do a little mentoring or teaching. That will be redemptive work. Is there a collective of bright young motivated tech types and activists that might establish a central site so that all of the dozens if not hundreds of outreach programs can form a real collective if only in communications. As an example there was a peace march the day after the shootings. The Mayor was there and several others were there, BUT, the collective like Anna’s Arts for Kids, Murder Board, and other vested organizations were simply not in that loop. So, how about for once the collective at least talk and communicate. Our organizations compete rather than complement each other. Redemptive work must widen its circle in New Orleans and not be so vested in “my way” or “our church” or “our program”. The redemptive work in New Orleans MUST start with language based on “us” and “we” and “together” not “them”, “they”, or “those people.” What other sins must we confront in order for these dry bones to see new life? Racism? Absolutely, but in a real way; black v. white – check; black v. brown – maybe not so much; light skinned v. dark skinned – we don’t talk about that; creoles v. black – no that is our culture; Protestant v. Catholic – em we’ve co-existed but really not cooperated. How about sexual orientation?
Sin? I don’t think so but you might but, in this collective, however, we see humanity as precious no matter what our ‘orientation’ is. Because if we start from a perspective of hate, rejection, or intolerance how can we live the dream. Yes, you remember the dream… Martin’s dream… where we are judged not on the color of our skin [orientation, shade of skin color, economic location, sex, or nation of origin] but ON THE CONTENT OF OUR CHARACTER. When we begin to include everyone in the collective, even those we mistrust because of our own cultural, social, or historical norms and experiences THEN we begin the work of Redemption. It is said that New Orleans is a city of resilience. Does that resilience in-
clude the ability to come back from the darkness of our past and see the hope and light of the future throwing off the shackles of intolerance and segregation? I mean all segregation: Ward segregation, economic segregation, and social segregation, racial, ethnic, sexual, religious, and political segregation! We can and we must. How does it start? Go to “their” meeting without agenda. Join “their group” and listen. Put that fear in a box and put it away and know that from this priest’s perspective the divine, given a chance, can heal, prosper, and begin our work of redemption for us. It was a violation, that Mother’s Day melee. How long will we violate ourselves before we seek and become vessels of redemption?

One of the moving parts of the evening is when Rip Naquin brought Regina Adams to the stage to let everyone know how much he appreciated Regina and all that she has done over the years for the LGBT community. Regina's first lover, Reginald Eugene Adams, Jr. perished in the Upstairs Lounge Fire, and when she spoke, she brought home the raw emotions and true feelings of loss that many of the younger generation there had been unable to identify with until that moment. The next day on Facebook, a wonderful post captured the emotion of the event: Arthur Severio: Last night I saw a circle complete for me and so many others who are residents of the city of New Orleans and gay community everywhere. Rip Naquin and Marsha Delain of Ambush Magazine sponsored a fundraiser for a memorial to people who perished in the Uptairs Lounge Fire. Marcy Marcel was a transexual performer at the Upstairs Lounge. I would listen to her stories when she tended bar of the fire. She was on her way to work that night and like most people was running late "watching a Bette Davis movie on tv." While waiting for the cab, the movie was interrupted with a news flash of the fire. Regina Adams left the bar to go to get a checkbook at her home. Regina’s lover was at the bar when the villain threw the fire bomb that lit the stairwell that killed 32 people. The pictures from the fire tell a story where people were trapped like animals, They tried to escape through the bars and were crushed by people behind them trying to escape the fire. In death as in life, their families and friends were ashamed of people knowing of their sexual identity and the stig-
mata of being attached to it. Years have passed now and so much has changed. I am in the generation between the Marcy/Regina and the youth of today. The two monumental moments for me were watching Regina Adams tipping the new generation Aubrey Synclaire and Aubrey tipping Regina: a passing of the torch. The next moment was Rip bringing Regina on onstage and telling her how much we appreciate her. Somewhere in heaven, pussycat (Marcy Marcell) is saying, “Thank you dawlin!” Aubrey Synclaire: It was a beautiful and emotional night and a true honor to participate in it. Baton Rouge Pride Fest Announces Entertainment Lineup The Baton Rouge Pride Fest has released a packed lineup of great entertainment for its event from noon until 6pm Saturday, June 15, at the Belle of Baton Rouge Atrium. In addition to a full afternoon of entertainment, Pride Fest also will include its customary community resource fair with approximately 50 organizations participating, a blessing of relationships, recognition of two outstanding community leaders, a special area for kids and much more. “We’re proud of all we’ve got to offer this year – particularly the packed entertainment lineup,” said Tom Merrill, chairman of Pride Fest. “Best yet, thanks to the generosity of our friends and sponsors, admission is free.” Among the variety of entertainers: Legendary “Diva” Daphne MuShatt will step out of retirement to provide what always promises to be a rousing set of songs. Project Lazarus In 1983, Father Bob Pawell noticed a number of black wreaths on doors as he walked through the French Quarter. He soon learned that someone had died of a strange new disease called GRID (Gay Related Immune Deficiency). Alarmed, he turned to prayer and meditation. Father Bob had arrived in New Orleans in 1976 to found the Tau House, a Franciscan outreach to people alienated by the Church. The ministry was located in a double-shotgun house in the 1000 block of Governor Nicholls Street. He began making his rounds at bars, restaurants and shops and soon developed a network of friends and acquaintances and Tau House quickly earned a reputation as a non-judgmental place where regular sinners could seek spiritual services. In 1984, a young man known as Robert H. was released from Charity Hospital after a nasty episode from what we now know was AIDS. Robert H. was homeless and penniless and had nowhere to go when a compassionate nurse called the Tau House and pleaded Robert’s case. Father Bob gave the young man a place to stay and soon the word spread that someone was willing to care for people with AIDS. This was rather remarkable at the time because most people with AIDS then were completely shunned. Even doctors and nurses treated them tepidly with gloves and masks. Before long the need was obvious and Father Bob along with Father Paul Derossiers of Holy Trinity Church in the Marigny approached Archbishop Hannan about the possibility of providing shelter to homeless AIDS patients. The Archbishop immediately agreed it was necessary and right and thus was born Project Lazarus. The home designated to house indigent AIDS patients was just around the corner from Holy Trinity Church in the old convent of the German Benedictine nuns of the 19th century. The first residents were Bob T., Leon G., and Ray G. At the time, the location of the house was kept secret for safety reasons. Tau House was the public face of the ministry. Around this time, Father Bob met Jonathan Clemmer, a nurse at Tulane Medical Center who was getting involved in the emerging AIDS crisis. Both men joined the newly formed NO/ AIDS Task Force which would collaborate with Project Lazarus in offering AIDS related services. A support team then came together and included Dr. Ted Wisniewsky, nurses Carol Pindaro, Jeanne Dumestre, Mike Callais, Paul
Holthaus, and Maurice Geisel, who kept books for the facility. By 1986, Paul Ploche was designated as a fundraiser and Katie Quigley was hired to provide 24 hour assistance to the residents. By the following year, the staff had grown to ten. Other supporters and volunteers in those early years included Armeinius Captain Jon Lee Poche, Arthur Roger, Robert Gordy, Madeleine Kohl, Al McMahon, Robbie Haywood, Don Ezel, and Ginger Snap. Also at this time, the famed Halloween Bal Masque annual fundraiser was founded. In the early years, Lazarus House (as it has come to be known) essentially functioned as a hospice; it was a place to die. That began to change in 1996 when protease inhibitors became available. These antiviral drugs led to the AIDS cocktails which have enabled those infected with HIV to live much longer than before their advent. Because of this, Project Lazarus is not so much a hospice any more as it is a transitional living facility. Its mission is to help heal and empower people living with HIV/AIDS by focusing on wellness, providing housing and offering important support services. Residents go through an application process and are allowed to stay in the house two years, although most stay six to nine months. During that time, they learn basic life skills that many people take for granted. One beneficial program is the Wellness University, which offers classes on cooking, budgeting, obtaining a GED, coping skills, and living with HIV among others. A nurse is on staff and provides differing levels of medical care according to each patient’s need. The staff also features an addiction counselor, which augments a substance abuse program. In addition, Project Lazarus also helps residents find employment if they are able to work. Overall, Project Lazarus is driven by what Executive Director Kim Moss describes as “a holistic approach.” This is evident in the facility’s five serenity gardens and fitness center. There is also a vegetable garden which helps the facility reduce food costs. Residents are taught and encouraged to meditate. Project Lazarus also offers acupuncture, music therapy, and massage therapy. But of all the services and programs Project Lazarus provides, the most important is abstract and intangible according to Moss: “We put our arms around them and love them.” Currently, Project Lazarus has a
23 resident capacity and an annual budget of over $1 million. 60% of its funding comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development while the remaining 40% comes from private foundations, individual donors and the Archdiocese of New Orleans. While the Archdiocese sponsors it, Project Lazarus is not a part of Catholic Charities. Since its founding in
1985, over 1,200 people have called Project Lazarus home. real estate Majority of States Still Allow Housing Discrimination against Gays It seems hard to believe but there are still scores of states in the U.S. where you can be denied housing because you are gay. There are a handful of states in America that have laws protecting individuals from being denied housing based on their sexual orientation, but a lot of progress still needs to be made in order to address the bigotry and profiling that can affect a gay individual’s choice on where to live. The National Fair Housing Alliance has recently addressed this matter in a report in that can be accessed online at: www.nationalfairhousing.org. This report was released on April 11, 2013 and is meant to educate and enlighten the community at large about the huge problem with housing discrimination against the LGBT community. The National Fair Housing Alliance is a powerful consortium of over 220 private and non-profit fair housing organizations, and state and civil rights agencies from all over the United States. The organization, which has been around since 1988, helps make sure that the LGBT community has equal access to apartments, houses, mortgages and insurance policies. Recently, Rea Carey, the Executive Director for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, testified before Congress that LGBT people “may experience outright hostility…may be subject to violence or property damage” during their search for housing. This is one reason why it is so important to ensure you are working with an LGBT/ LGBT friendly realtor when you are looking for a home in any city. This can help prevent you from landing in a community where you may feel unwelcome, or worse. Additionally, the FBI has reported an increase in hate-crimes based on sexual orientation in the last three years. In 2012, National Fair Housing reported 175 complaints of housing discrimination based on sexual orientation and another 45 based on gender identity. The report also includes some real life examples of how gay couples can be turned down for housing by banks or condominium boards and how often a reason will be “made up” to cover up for the prejudice or bigotry against LGBT individuals. There are also accounts of what can happen if you accidentally buy into a hostile neighborhood. The sad fact is there are real estate agents that will say anything to get a home sold, including saying that a
neighborhood is gay friendly, when it may be actually quite hostile to the LGBT lifestyle or gay couples. The result can be name-calling, damage to the property and violence, resulting in your need for an appeal to state and federal human rights commissions to set things right. The states that do protect against housing discrimination based on sexual orientation include; California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Book of the Month Since summer is almost upon us, it is a great time to catch up on all the mindless pulp fiction I have been bypassing during the year. As you know, I am a huge James Patterson fan and his Alec Cross series is one of my favorites. I have been lax in keeping up with Detective Cross and his exploits, so when I had a free day at home, I devoured the next book in the series that I am behind. “Kill Alex Cross” is another fast paced thriller that keeps readers enthralled from beginning to end. The president’s children have been kidnapped from their school. The baffling crime takes on a more desperate turn when it seems that the kidnapper makes it clear that he does not want a ransom. As Cross delves into this unbelievable crime, he faces opposition from within the force from above. The power plays of the law enforcement and federal departments add an interesting dimension to the plot. Meanwhile a deadly terrorist organization is threatening Washington DC. Trying to balance both cases while dealing with his issues at home have become increasingly difficult for Cross. With each novel in the series, Patterson develops his main characters and keeps the plots fresh and interesting. I do believe, Patterson enjoys creating his multifaceted villains. In every book they are more than just the evil bad guy. They are complex characters with fas-
cinating backgrounds; many of whom like Gary Soneji span over several books. The female terrorist in “Kill Alex Cross” is a prime example. It looks like we may be seeing more of her in the future. It’s A Smash! The final show for the Broadway series at NOCCA concludes on June 1 at 7:30pm with Megan Hilty star of NBC’s Musical Drama Smash. I am so excited about seeing her, I just started watching the first season and it is fabulous. Kind of bummed it was cancelled, but I discovered the amazing talents of Hilty. She played the wonderful triple-threat Ivy Lynn in Smash. Hilty was previously seen as Lorelei Lee, the diamond-loving blonde made famous by Carol Channing, in the Encores! production of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” to which she earned rave reviews. She made her Broadway debut as Glinda in “Wicked,” then went on to perform the role in both the national tour and in Los Angeles. After receiving critical acclaim for her portrayal of Doralee Rhodes in Broadway’s “9 to 5: The Musical,” Hilty was honored with nominations for Lead Actress in a Musical at the Drama Desk Awards, Outer Critics Circle Awards, the Drama League Awards and L.A. It’s Creole Time Again The French Market’s Annual Creole Tomato Festival will happen again June 8 and 9th from 10am– 6pm both days. Party Down Are you ready for the summer season? The weather is turning hotter and so are the parties. Many thrilling things are going on in this city with new venues and restaurants opening up all weekly. It is also a time of many outdoor music festivals, which I went to two during the last two weeks. The first was YLC’s Wednesday at the Square which unfortunately ends this month. That night my friends Beaux and Barrett came and met me for cocktails and to listen to Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk and Mahayla. There was a great crowd out that night and the music was incredible. Then we decided to try out a new restaurant afterwards that has just opened in the Bywater. Mariza is a trendy place right by the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts that has a great cuisine, very cultured cocktails and an architecturally pleasing flair. Mariza is the creation of two very wellknown restaurateurs in the city. Chef Ian Schnoebelen and General Manager Laurie Casebonne opened their first restaurant, Iris, in January of 2006. Iris is a fine-dining bistro with Contemporary American fare at The Bienville House Hotel in the heart of the French Quarter. In 2007, Schnoebelen
was awarded Best New Chef by Food & Wine Magazine. The pair opened their second restaurant, Mariza in January of this year. Mariza serves Italianinspired cuisine in a casual comfortable environment at the Rice Mill Lofts. Then after a few cocktails, we caught the Oz drag show. Dusty Debris, Moanalot Fontaine, Lisa Beaumann and Gia GiaVanni did an excellent job entertaining the crowd. On Friday, my friend Nick and I braved the horrible weather to attend Sippin’ in Seersucker, a fundraiser for the Ogden Museum at Canal Place. This was an evening of Southern elegance that included dancing, cocktails and wonderful food from area restaurants. There was even a fashion contest for the most unique use of seersucker. The wedding dress made out of the fabric was over the top. Later that night, I made a quick pit stop at JohnPaul’s to catch the tail end of Johnny Passion’s Gospel Explosion. The audience was revved up and the performers were on fire this evening. Johnny’s shows are energized and it translates well to the audience. I even got to enjoy an evening with a hot and somewhat straight stranger. Aww, memories from JohnPaul’s (or lack thereof), are always a good time. On Saturday, my friend Laura and I did the Champagne Stroll on Magazine Street. It was a lovely night to walk up and down the strip sipping libations and looking in the shops and art galleries. It was a laid back and enjoyable night doing one of my favorite past times, shopping. There are so many new places to see on Magazine Street these days. The following Day was Mother’s Day and Nick and I brought my mom to a wonderful brunch at Dickie Brennan’s new Tableau restaurant attached to Le Petit. The service and food was superior at Tableau and I could not have asked for a better day with my mom. The Quarter was packed and the day was just spectacular. On Tuesday, I went to the French Market’s hospitality party. They were introducing people in the industry to their new rental spaces. They have many different areas available that are perfect for private parties. Guests also got great deals at some of the shops down there. After, I met the some friends for dinner at Sugar Park. That week was a crawfish extravaganza. I went to two crawfish boils hosted by vendors on Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, I went to the Marriott Residence Inn Galleria in Metairie for a very nice customer appreciation crawfish boil. The property has many amenities and is just minutes away from downtown. The following night, I enjoyed another boil hosted by Limousine Livery at their facility. This is one of the premier transportation companies in the city. I love this time of the [continued on 30]

under the gaydar ...from 24 year when I get to enjoy my favorite seafood delicacy, mudbugs. Following Limousine Livery’s event, Beaux and I went for drinks at the brand new restaurant in the Bywater called Booty’s (love the name) that is all the rage. Their crafted cocktails are divine, we had a few of their tequila specialty that got our night started. Then we hit a few bars in the Quarter for a twirl before calling it a night. Friday was a very interesting night. I once again brought Beaux along for the ride and we went to the 10th anniversary party at Rick’s Cabaret. I forgot how nice the place was on the inside, very swanky and I have to admit, Rick’s does have some of the most beautiful women in the city. It was a hospitality industry event so there were many people there I knew. Trixie Minx performed with her Burlesque Troup and we enjoyed potent cocktails. Then we maneuvered our way to another club with a different slant, the Corner Pocket. It was new meat night, and by the end of the evening, we had gotten our fill of flesh, both male and female. We then hopped around the Quarter stopping at Good Friends, Oz, Pub and Lafitte’s before turning in. Saturday was a full day of activity starting with a trip to Bayou Boogaloo Music Festival on Bayou St. John. Frankie Fierce, Beaux and I enjoyed

some great bands, lots of beer and bought unique art pieces. We saw so many gays out in force enjoying the day. Something about outdoor festivals that make me happy, it may be the music and the food, but mostly I think it is the extraordinary amount of shirtless men. This was also a special day for the New Orleans gay community. That evening, I attended to the fundraiser to commemorate those who died in the Upstairs Lounge Fire 40 years ago. Rip and Marsha from Ambush organized this inspirational event that brought out so many people to honor those lost in this devastating tragedy. Blanche and her drag daughter Dusty Debris hosted the night’s festivities. It was heartwarming to see such a diverse crowd and all the people on the stage gave their all. It was especially memorable when Regina Adams, who lost her first love in the fire, spoke. She brought a face and a voice to this disaster. The event raised $2,672 for the 40th Commemoration Ceremonies set for June 24. After, Beaux and I had martinis served up by the fabulous Jake in Queen's Head Pub upstairs at Good Friends before making it a somewhat early night. I had another Sunday Funday with brunch at one of the best sushi restaurants in town. their food is fabulous. Then shopping at Best Buy and ending the night by attending the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) fundraiser. They had show-stopping performances by their students, an exquisite silent auction, and culinary treats by the Hilton Riverside. There were so many people there who are part of the social scene and I got to hang out with lots of friends in a very artistic setting. It was a perfect way to end the weekend. Tony’s Tidbits of Gay Wisdom “The prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help others, at least don’t hurt them.” This quote seems so simple, but yet is so profound. This is one of the Dalai Lama’s most famous quotes. I was lucky enough (although by accident) to see this amazing man in the lobby of the Hotel InterContinental as he was checking in. Not knowing what do to when this great man who inspires so many passed me, I did some sort of part bow, part curtsy thing that probably looked like I was having a seizure. Oh well it made him smile. How does this saying affect you? Do you give money to noteworthy causes but gossip maliciously behind others’ backs? Do you donate products to gift baskets for fundraisers but then write nasty comments about people on Facebook? No one in this world is Mother Theresa, there was only one of her. But there is only one of you, and you play an important and unique role in many people’s lives. How you impact those individuals, both for the positive or negative will come back

news “Researching Your New Orleans Property” Friends of the Cabildo and the Preservation Resource Center will host “Researching Your New Orleans Property” Saturday, June 15th. Robert J. Cangelosi, Jr., an Adjunct Lecturer at the Tulane University School of Architecture, will present an in-depth program on historic home research at the Old U.S. Mint, 400 Esplanade Avenue, at 10am. If walls could talk, you would know everything you wanted to know about your property, like who previously owned it, those who slept in it, how old it is and what secrets it holds. Cangelosi, president of Koch and Wilson Architects, will outline how to develop the history of your property, using primary sources rather than oral traditions and secondary sources, which often are incorrect. Preparation of a “chain of title,” the essential first step in developing a history, will be discussed. The chain document the ownership of a property, which in theory, can be taken back to the early 1700s, during the French Colonial period. The “chain of title” relates to the property, not the improvements, and rarely will the chain alone indicate when improvements were made. Like history detectives, determining when improvements were done involves research into various records, including census, tax, water, building permits, contracts, city directories, newspapers, and more. This program will explain how these records can be used and where to find them. The architectural style of the improvements can also help date a property. A concise architectural history of New Orleans will be included to help identify the architectural style of your [continued on 33]

obiturary Helmut of the Galley House Bar Helmut Rheinhold Stuhlmann, 81, of Valrico, Fl., passed away on May 11th from an accident incurred at home earlier in the week. Born in Ochsenwerder, Germany to Emilie Homann and Otto Stuhlmann. Educated in Germany and was a graduate of professional hotel and cooking schools in Paris, Luxembourg, and Hamburg. Helmut became a legal resident of the United States and was inducted into the US Army where he served as executive cook to General Harvey Fischer in Verona, Italy from 1956-1958. Helmut continued his culinary profession and worked for the Marriott Corporation in New York City, Omaha, and Houston. He then moved to New Orleans, La., and served
as the Food & Beverage Director for the Fairmont-Roosevelt Hotel. Helmut operated the Galley House Bar in the French Quarter for many years and later co-owned and operated the Munch-A-Bunch Restaurant in the CBD with Barbara France. Helmut finalized his career as a culinary trainer at UniversalOgden. Retired in 1998 and moved to Valrico, Fl., where he pursued his interest in gardening and stained glass. Helmut leaves behind his life partner of 31 years, Burton Saucier, his sister, Gerda Stuhlmann Schonfeld, brother in law, Karl Heinz Schonfeld, 4 nephews, and great nephews and great
nieces as well as devoted friends in the metro New Orleans and Northshore area. Helmut will be interred in a private burial service in the Augusta Cemetery in Augusta, TX, in the Saucier Family burial compound. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be sent to the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary in Mandeville, LA.
